South Berwick’s 44th Strawberry Festival SOUTH BERWICK Always the last Saturday in June, this year’s Strawberry Festival will be held on June 29, officially kicking off summer for the residents of South Berwick. All over town one can see the bright red, white, and green strawberry flags that line the main streets and hang from many houses. The day is filled with food, entertainment, games, and crafts. For forty-four consecutive years, hundreds of volunteers from the community have come together for this locale-centered tradition. As always, official festival activities will take place within the boundaries of Central School, located on Main Street

in the center of town. A stop at the Strawberry Festival information booth is a mustdo, to find out more about the scheduling for entertainment venues, vendor booth locations, and activities throughout the fair grounds. At the information booth you can also purchase the official Strawberry Festival t-shirt. Strawberry shortcakes have always been a favorite so that the order line wends across the front lawn of the school. The volunteer staff will begin serving at 9 a.m. and continue until they run out of supplies. More than 250 cases of fresh strawberries, 70 gallons of freshly whipped cream, 300 dozen biscuits, and 60 luscious cheesecakes,

will be prepared and served. The greater portion of the courtyard is ringed by a huge section of food booths offering items such as fruit cups and smoothies, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and cold drinks, fried dough, lobster rolls, and entire BBQ chicken meals. A community pancake breakfast eill be hosted 6-10 a.m. Food items are prepared and sold by local non-profit groups which include the fire department, Knights of Columbus, military veterans, Masons, Rotarians, and student groups. Entertainment will be held on the See STRAWBERRIES page 5...

have never been so much fun. Now Dr. Burt brings us The Bookseller’s Daughter, a mystery/thriller about Keegan, a 17-year-old who works at Annie’s Book Stop in Wells. After the theft of a rare Wells-related Civil War memoir from another local bookstore, Keegan is approached by a hooded figure seeking her help locating a graveyard. (Fact: tiny 7x8-mile Wells really does boast an amazing 201 cemeteries.) The visitor is after

the forgotten 202nd, which may contain the remains of a gargoyle. The quest the two unlikely partners embark on will stretch from Wells to Kennebunk, back down to York and out to Alfred. And it will date back to the Civil War and World War I. It’s a risky partnership that could cost Keegan not only her own life but the lives of her mother and her best friend. See BURT page 4...

Legends Join Bushes to Support Gary’s House KENNEBUNKPORT Former Red Sox and Patriots players and four Red Sox World Series trophies were on hand for the 2019 George H.W. Bush Celebrity Golf Classic at the Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport on Tuesday, June 18. The annual event is named in honor of longtime Gary’s House supporter, President George H.W. Bush. Over the years, the President and Mrs. Bush chaired the event along with several generations of the Bush family. This year’s honorary co-chairs are Bush grandchildren, Marshall Bush and Sam Bush LeBlond who were joined at the event by their uncle, President George W. Bush. Tournament proceeds support Gary’s House, a Northern

Light Mercy Hospital program that provides affordable accommodations for friends and family of loved ones receiving medical care in southern Maine. The hospitality home is named in honor of Gary Pike, a young Kennebunk man who lost his battle to cancer in 1991. During his treatments, Gary saw firsthand the financial hardship and stress families

Gov. Janet Mills Eliminates Single-Use Plastic Bags in Maine wildlife and landscapes that support Maine’s economy, said Stover. “With the Governor’s signature on this bill, we will be limiting the plastic bags that enter our coastal waters and protecting the health of our marine life. Plastic bags have an overwhelming impact on Maine’s environment and an adverse impact on the state’s ecosystems. As a response, 24 municipalities in Maine have instituted local bans on single use plastic bags. At the request of the Retail Association of Maine and Maine Grocers and Food Producers Association, this new law creates a uniform statewide policy. “The grocer and retail community wanted consistency in the policies that govern plastic bags in their industry,

KITTERY On Tuesday, June 25, the Town of Kittery and Kittery Port Authority will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Government Street Wharf Replacement Project. The event will take place at 1 p.m. at the town wharf, located in the Kittery Foreside. The project, which was awarded to Maritime Construction & Engineering, included replacement of the existing wooden fishing pier, instaland we delivered, said Grohoski. “This bill is an example of government, business and the environmental community coming together to create a law that works for everyone. It’s a huge step forward for Maine. The legislation prohibits a retail establishment from using single-use plastic carry-out bags at the point of sale. As an alternative, businesses may offer customers paper bags, however, grocers and large retailers must charge a minimum five cent fee

This law would exempt certain bags, including bags for produce, prescription drugs, newspapers, laundry and live animals, such as fish. “Not only does this law solve an immediate problem of plastic bag pollution, it helps train Mainers to be better stewards of the environment, said McCrea. “We all need to think twice about what we waste and how that impacts our world. Our future generations deserve nothing less than our best efforts to protect the environment that they will inherit. These regulations will go into effect on April 22, 2020 to allow businesses adequate time to adjust.

The large-scale project which began in early 2019, will come to a close this week. The success of the Government Street Wharf Replacement Project is due in large part to the dedicated work of Shawn Toohey and the team at Maritime Construction & Engineering and the extensive experience, guidance and countless hours volunteered by Kittery Port Authority Vice Chair, Bruce Crawford, managing the project from inception to completion. The Town of Kittery is excited to celebrate the completion of this project, which will support the community for years to come. (Photo from www.kitteryme.gov)

~ News ~ Grads Party All Night Long – Safely! YORK The entire York High Class of 2019 enjoyed an overnight of fun-filled activities at Project Graduation an event which began this past Friday night and went until the early hours of Saturday morning. Shortly after graduation all the kids gathered at the York High School for the beginning of an all night adventure. The graduates boarded a fleet of buses, which brought them first to the Hilltop Fun Center in Somersworth, NH, where they had access to a range of attractions such as laser tag, rock climbing, go karts, and more. One of the grads, Elizabeth Adams, shared her enthusiasm for the event, “Project Grad is so much fun, I loved the Hilltop fun center.” The group enjoyed a delicious dinner buffet provided by Roundabout Diner. Around 12 a.m., the Class of 2019 boarded the buses again, went to The Works Athletic Club, and enjoyed the swimming pool, basketball courts, racquetball, ping pong tables, etc. For those that were still hungry there was a taco truck, cotton candy machines, ice cream truck, and more. They were then shuttled to Bowl-O-Rama for a couple of hours of bowling and gorging on more food. The classmates finished the “all-nighter” at Norma’s Restaurant around 5 a.m. where they were treated to breakfast before saying goodbye to their friends. Marie Hamel, class valedictorian, said, “We are so appreciative of all Yorkwise has done to provide us with Project Graduation, it was such a fun night!”

Ogunquit 2019 Trolley Schedule

The project is one of the longest, continuous events of its kind in the state of Maine. The first event was held by Yorkwise in 1981 in response to teenagers dying in drunk driving crashes throughout the seacoast area during graduation nights. Over the past 38 years, thousands of York kids have been kept safe with nearly 99% of all graduates participating year after year. The event would not be possible without the support of countless volunteers who plan the event and then chaperone throughout the evening. Neil Rideout, a Yorkwise member and Project Grad volunteer said, “Keeping all our graduates safe on graduation night is our first priority... It’s remarkable to see how this community, with the YHS teachers, administration and parents, comes together to achieve that goal and make it a memorable evening for all the kids.” Yorkwise is a non-profit community-based organization dedicated to promoting drug and alcohol prevention and education for York’s youth and families. It is one of the only organizations of its kind in the seacoast area and in Maine. While Project Graduation is the largest event the group sponsors every year, they also support chemical-free activities for student musical/theater groups, high school social programs, community educational events, etc. Yorkwise raises funds to pay for Project Graduation through their annual auction – thanks to donations from many area businesses who provide annual contributions. Britta Ayer, Yorkwise’s president said, “We can not thank our local businesses, community and volunteers enough for their continued donations and support. It

is the York community coming together that makes an event like Project Graduation a continued tradition year after year.” Yorkwise is already starting to plan next year’s auction. Anyone looking to support Yorkwise should contact Britta Ayer at 603-781-2922 or britta.ayer@ gmail.com.

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that the contract for an infrastructure project at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) has been officially awarded. The contract provides $12,240,900 for Cianbro to expand an outdated warehouse facility that will help the shipyard receive, inspect, and distribute submarine components for worldwide fleet support. “I have long advocated for the Navy to address the modernization needs at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and I am so pleased to announce that the con-

As a member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Collins championed the funding for this project, which was included in the enacted fiscal year 2019 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill. The bill was signed into law in September of 2018. “PNSY is critical to southern Maine’s economy and our national security, Senator Collins continued. “This expansion will help ensure the readiness of our nation’s submarine fleet and

WELLS Over the past winter, budding artists from Wells High School began their second year of participation in the Memory Project, a nonprofit organization inviting art students from around the globe to create portraits of children uprooted from their home countries due to poverty, abuse, natural disasters, war and genocide. “The intent of the portraits is to help (these) children feel valued and important; to know that many people care about their wellbeing,” said WHS art teacher Vanessa White-Capelluti in her description of the program. “This is an opportunity to use their art talents to practice kindness and global awareness.” This year, White-Capelluti’s students created portraits from photos of seventeen Rohingya refugee children who have fled con-

personal history in the future.” In a note accompanying the video, Rose Franz, Outreach Director of The Memory Project wrote, “I am so pleased to let you know that the portraits you created were delivered to the Rohingya children, and they absolutely loved them! As you will see in the following video, the children were so excited to receive your artwork and very touched by your efforts. They fully understood that creating the portraits was a way to show them how much you care about their well-being and their future.”

Soon after the portraits were received in the refugee settlement, a video was sent to White-Capelluti from the Memory Project documenting the excited reaction of these and many other children receiving the personalized artwork created by others from far away. White-Capelluti believes portraits received by the displaced children will “act as meaningful pieces of

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Cape Breton Fiddling and Dancing in West Kennebunk WEST KENNEBUNK Andrea Beaton, Troy MacGillivray, and Sabra MacGillivray – some of Atlantic Canada’s finest performers of traditional music and dance – will appear in an extraordinary concert at the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 23, at 3 p.m. Andrea Beaton’s music is deeply rooted in Cape Breton tradition. She comes from a long line of musicians, composers, and dancers, a heritage that goes back to her paternal grandfather. Her parents, Kinnon and Betty Lou Beaton, are among the most sought-after dance musicians on Cape Breton today. Troy MacGillivray is from Lanark, a small community on the north-eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Troy’s commitment to music has spanned 30 years and includes both practical and academic accomplishments; he recently earned an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Limerick in Ireland. From as young as six years old, Troy was impressing audiences with step dancing and soon after, with his fiddle and piano skills. Troy is a recipient of the Queen

High Fashion Without High Prices

Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for contributions to culture in Canada. Sabra MacGillivray is one of Atlantic Canada’s leading ambassadors of Highland Dancing and Cape Breton Scottish step dancing. Born into a very musical family, Sabra has performed with her sister, Kendra and brother, Troy all of her life, most often as a dancer, or accompanying the fiddle on piano or bodhran. She began dancing when she was five years old. She has won several champion titles as a highland dancer, made her mark as a stellar step dancer, and put herself on the map as an award-winning choreographer. Sabra holds her dance teaching license from the Scottish Dance Teachers’ Alliance in Scotland, and is a member of Scotdance Canada. The West Kennebunk United Methodist Church is located at 160 Alfred Road, West Kennebunk. Admission is by donation at the door. Suggested price: $20 adults, $15 youth and seniors (under 18/over 65), with a family rate of $45 maximum for parents with children. For more information, call Paul Wells 207-985-2831.

The public is cordially invited to attend. Over the past year, amateur radio operators have provided critical communications during emergencies in towns across America. During winter storms, spring flooding, tornadoes, California wildfires and other events world-wide, amateur radio operators, often called “hams, have often been the only persons able to communicate during disasters to save lives and property. They are the first to provide rescuers with critical information and communications – all for free. On Field Day weekend, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with local ham radio

operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about. More than 30,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year’s event. Anyone may become a licensed Amateur Radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed amateurs in the United States and more than 2.5 million around the world. With clubs such as the New England Radio Discussion Society, it’s easy for anybody to get involved in southern Maine. Celebrate Summer Solstice with Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm KITTERY Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm will celebrate the Summer Solstice at The Dance Hall on Saturday, June 22 at 8 p.m. The all-women percussion and vocal ensemble is dedicated to cultural diversity, education, and healing through the universal language of music. Blending western vocal harmonies with the polyrhythms of West Africa, the Middle East, and Brazil, they create a multicultural fusion beyond tradition. Together for 26 years, Inanna has recorded six full-length albums, been invited to schools to teach drumming and culture to youth, and performed extensively. Through their own teaching, the members of Inanna seek not only to provide musical education, but also to cultivate vibrant community. The band takes its name from the ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna, who was worshiped more than 4,000 years ago when it is believed that the drummers were predominantly women. Inanna was conceived in

Ulna, ME, in 1989 in the context of a drum class under the tutelage of John McDowell, who offered the wise guidance that if you want to improve as a musician, “play out, i.e., start performing. Their first official gig was on the Winter Solstice 1989, which is the holiday of the Goddess Inanna, whose myth recounts her descent and re-emergence from the underworld. Some versions of the myth describe her being called back to the upper world through the sound of the drum. Some versions of the myth also say she was responsible for bringing the drum to her people. Inanna’s repertoire includes a variety of drums and melodic percussion. Rhythmic texture is enhanced with bells, shakers, cymbals, Tibetan bowls, chimes, claves and wood blocks. The Dance Hall is located at 7 Walker Street in Kittery. Tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org. For more information, call 207-703-2083.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Tea, Games, Markets, Love at Historical Society WELLS / OGUNQUIT The Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit is pleased to announce a series of summer programming for all ages at their location on Route One in Wells. Offerings include a book club, the return of their popular family activities, year two of their successful outdoor market, as wells as a beautiful venue for wedding ceremonies. The season officially starts with the Meetinghouse Museum tours of the collection galleries on Tuesdays in June, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A new program is the result of a collaboration with Wells Public Library. Andrea Kazilion-

is, adult services librarian, reports, “The library is thrilled to support the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit in its first ever book club! We will be pleased to assist readers in getting their books for this group – just stop by the library today and ask.” The group will meet at 10 a.m. each Tuesday in June with a fascinating selection, The Many Captivities of Esther Wheelwright, published in 2016 by Anne Little. It tells a story of 18th century New England through the capture of a young Wells girl during the Queen Anne War. Also scheduled is the 2nd annual Market at the Meetinghouse on Saturday, June 29. This

event is open to anyone who would like to participate as a vendor. All proceeds from the sale of vendor spaces will go to the upkeep of Meetinghouse Museum. Those interested are advised to contact info@wohistory.org or 207-6464775 by Tuesday, June 25. The month of June has an open invitation for families with young children to “jump back into time together” with old fashioned games, projects and crafts, courtesy of the generous funding from Crickets Corner Beach & Toy in Ogunquit. Owner Tracy Smith says, “We’re delighted to sponsor Family History Games, helping children to use their imaginations

lounge will be open for drinks and dining at 6 p.m., and will remain open after the movie. The screening will feature live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis. ‘The Last Command,’ directed by Josef von Sternberg, tells the sweeping story of a powerful general in Czarist Russia (Jannings) forced to flee his homeland during the Bolshevik Revolution. He emigrates to America, where he is reduced to living in poverty. Finding work as an extra at a Hollywood studio, the former general lands the part of a commanding officer in a movie about the Revolution, causing flashbacks to his traumatic experiences. The conflict leads to a spectacular climax and a towering performance that earned Jannings ‘Best Actor’ honors. ‘The Last Command’ is also one of early Hollywood’s most creative and challenging looks at the global conflicts that contributed to World War I. These sessions are the first of many opportunities to help create a successful strategy.

Promoting Energy Programs for Veterans Efficient Heat Pumps STATEWIDE Joined by clean energy advocates, educators, and workers, Governor Janet Mills signed LD 1766 “An Act To Transform Maine’s Heat Pump Market To Advance Economic Security and Climate Objectives at Kennebec Valley Community College. The bill, offered by Governor Mills and presented by Senator Mark Lawrence of York, establishes the goal of installing 100,000 heat pumps in Maine by 2025. “Heat pumps reduce Maine’s dependency on fossil fuels, stabilize energy costs, and support energy efficiency jobs which will attract young families and skilled workers to our state, said Governor Mills. “By signing this legislation, we are taking another step forward in combating climate change, embracing a clean energy future, and diversifying Maine’s economy. I thank Senator Lawrence for presenting this bill to the Legislature and lawmakers for giving it their unanimous, bipartisan support. “I want to congratulate Gov. Mills for her strong leadership on this issue. Gov. Mills’ initiative reduces carbon emissions, promotes good-paying energy jobs, and helps low-income and elderly Mainers stay warm in their homes. I was glad to sponsor this bill, and I’m glad to see this bill signed into law, said Sen. Mark Lawrence, chair of the Legislature’s Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee. Maine uses more home heating oil per capita than any other state in the nation. High-performance heat pumps are an affordable, efficient and accessible heating and cooling appliance and an

important component of reducing carbon emissions. LD 1766 establishes a goal of installing 100,000 new high-performance heat pumps in Maine over the next five years. This will be achieved through additional Efficiency Maine Trust (EMT) incentives, funded through Forward Capacity Market revenues, and coordinated programming with Maine State Housing Authority, funded by a portion of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Adding 100,000 new heat pumps in Maine in 5 years is forecasted to reduce heating bills between $300 and $600 a year per home. These savings are more likely to be spent on local goods and services, creating a multiplier effect on the local economy. One Maine util-

The sessions are structured to collect feedback on the barriers that would prevent attainment of the goals and brainstorm the potential solutions. We will present background information explaining why these goals are important, and then break out into smaller work teams that will consider the regional, practical and cultural issues we must manage. The results will be collected and assessed by a standing Strategic Working Team that has been formed by the Department of Economic and Community Development to write the final plan. Interested individuals should register online at https://greentreeevents.regfox. com/decdstrategic using the code 246 as soon as possible to attend.

that will result in paid leave for 85 percent of all Maine workers. The legislation, LD 369, An Act Authorizing Earned Employee Leave sponsored by Senator Rebecca Millett, requires companies with more than 10 employees to offer earned leave. Small businesses and seasonal employees are exempt. “I don’t know anyone who hasn’t gotten sick or had a child who’s gotten sick. That’s just life and such unexpected circumstances should not break the bank for working Maine people,” said Governor Mills. “This bipartisan bill balances the interests of business owners and ensures that hardworking Mainers are able to take necessary time off without worrying about losing a day’s pay. This forward-looking policy is good for our economy, good for our workforce, and shows that we can find common ground.” “From the start, this has

always been about making sure Mainers don’t have to choose between the health of their family or their paycheck. By instituting a statewide earned paid time off policy, we are one step closer to this goal,” said Sen. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth. “No one should worry about losing their job or paycheck when child care is canceled or when their parent has a health scare. This new law provides breathing room should the unexpected happen.” “While no one achieved everything they wanted, this new law is the product of bipartisan work, and I am thankful for how we have come together since its introduction,” said Dana Connors, president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce.

According to National Council of State Legislatures, 10 states have paid sick laws. Maine’s bill would allow for the use of paid leave for other circumstances while requiring reasonable notice by employees. The amended bill won strong bipartisan support in the Legislature, including a 9 to 1 vote in favor by the Labor and Housing Committee, and has the backing of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. In addition to providing paid leave for 85 percent of all Maine workers, the bill also exempts more than 40,000 of Maine’s 50,792 businesses. Upon Governor Mills’ signature, the law will take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the Legislature.

Health & Fitness Top Ten Tips for Healthy Grilling and Barbecuing With summer barbecues with family and friends quickly approaching, remember that grilling is a fun and flavorful way to cook. The best part is that grilling can be one of the healthiest ways to cook! Just follow the American Heart Association’s top ten tips for healthy grilling and barbecuing. 1. Pick the perfect protein. Fish, skinless chicken breast and lean ground poultry are all healthier choices. The good fats in fish like salmon and trout actually have health benefits. And when you grill with skill, your guests won’t even miss the red meat, which usually has more saturated fat. Wrap marinated fish fillets in foil, construct colorful chicken kebabs, or make more savory turkey burgers by mixing minced portabello mushrooms and onions into the patties. If you do choose meat or pork, get “loin” or “round” cuts and “choice” or “select” grades of beef instead of “prime.” 2. Right-size your portions. A healthy portion of any type of meat is about 3 ounces, or the size of a deck of cards, and definitely no more than 6 ounces. If that sounds small, just remember all the delicious grilled veggies and side dishes that will be keeping it company on your plate! 3. Give it a soak or rub. Marinating or rubbing spices on poultry, fish and meat can add amazing flavor with the bonus of being able to use less salt. All you need is about ½ cup of marinade or 1 tablespoon of spice rub for each pound of food. Try this simple marinade recipe and find others in our recipe center. Make a simple rub of your favorite spice (such as allspice, chili powder, cinnamon, cumin, garlic powder, paprika or rosemary) and black pepper. Safety tip: never reuse marinade or rub after raw meat has touched it. 4. Add color. Just about all your favorite colorful fruits and veggies can be grilled, alone or in kebabs, giving them delicious flavor that might win over even the most committed carnivore. The trick is to cut them into pieces that will cook quickly and evenly. Brush with a healthy oil to prevent sticking or use a grill basket to keep them out of the line of fire. Some favorites include asparagus, avocado, bell peppers, corn, eggplant, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, squash and

zucchini. 5. Say bye to the bad fat. Buy skinless poultry or remove the skin before cooking. Trim away any visible fat on meat. Brush or marinate foods with a healthy cooking oil. And let ‘er drip – make sure fat drips away from the food while it cooks. 6. Let the simple grilled goodness shine through. Don’t drown your grilled masterpiece in salty sauces, sugary condiments or heavy dressings. Use as little of these as possible, and try making your own healthier condiments. It’s easier than you think! And sometimes, a simple squeeze of lemon or lime is all it needs. 7. Choose healthier sides. Swap the traditional storebought barbecue fare like baked beans, cole slaw, macaroni salad and potato salad – which can have a lot of saturated fat, sodium and added sugars – for

healthier homemade versions. Or change it up and do a colorful bean salad, fruit salad or leafy green salad. 8. Make your buns whole grain. Whole-grain buns and breads will complement your healthy feast with extra fiber,

flavor and texture. If you’re watching your calories and carbs, try an open-faced burger or lettuce wrap. 9. Grill fruits for dessert. The natural sugars caramelize in the high heat, giving them extra sweetness and flavor. Try

Oxidation Levels Drive Tea Types Few beverages are as tradition-rich as tea. Brewed and enjoyed the world over, tea has been consumed for its medical benefits and soothing properties for thousands of years. Many people may be surprised to learn that all teas are made from the leaves of the same plant species, according to The Tea Spot. However, weather and soil types can influence the final tea product. Tea originates from the ca-

mellia sinensis plant and produces white, green, black, oolong, and pu-erh teas. The variety is determined by how much the tea leaves are allowed to oxidize. White tea: White tea leaves are oxidized the least and are the closest thing to a fresh tea leaf. According to research published in the Tea and Coffee Trade Journal, 20 percent of white tea is made up of catechins, which can See TEAS page 16...

sliced apple, pear or pineapple or halved bananas, figs, nectarines, peaches or plums. 10. Keep it clean. OK, so this isn’t the fun part, but be sure to scrub down the rack or grill pan after each use. Removing leftover burnt pieces of food stuck to the grill prevents burning, smoking and bitter flavors the next time you use it.

Health & Fitness Governor Mills Signs Legislation Banning Conversion Therapy into Law

AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills today signed into law a bill banning conversion therapy, a practice condemned by the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Medical Association. LD 1025, An Act To Prohibit the Provision of Conversion Therapy to Minors by Certain Licensed Professionals, sponsored by Assistant House Majority Leader Ryan Fecteau, prohibits licensed professionals from advertising and administering so-called conversion therapy methodology to minors. It passed the Legislature with bipartisan support. “Conversion therapy is a harmful, widely-discredited practice that has no place in Maine,” said Governor Janet Mills. “By signing this bill into

law today, we send an unequivocal message to young LGBTQ people in Maine and across the country: we stand with you, we support you, and we will always defend your right to be who you are.” “The legislature and Gov. Mills are sending a clear and concise message to our LGBTQ young people: You matter. You belong. And you are loved for who you are,” said Assistant House Majority Leader Ryan Fecteau. “So-called conversion therapy is irresponsible and harmful. I am so proud that Maine is standing tall to affirm that no young person needs to ‘fix’ what is not broken.” “This law is the result of two years of tireless work by advocates, medical and mental health care providers, and lawmakers alike. Polyphenols also can help people with diabetes, neurodegenerative disease and cardiovascular diseases. Black tea: Black tea is the world’s most common tea. It has higher levels of caffeine per cup and can stimulate mental alertness and raise energy levels. Black tea also has high levels of antioxidants. Pu-erh: Pu-erh teas are aged and fermented, and in Asia these teas have long been touted for their medicinal benefits. Pu-erh black tea has more caffeine than regular black tea. In China, pu-erh tea is commonly consumed as a detox tea, and some people regard it as a safe

dieter’s tea. Chai tea: Chai tea is not a variety of tea leaf, but a means of preparing black tea. Chai tea traces its origins to India and is typically a spiced milk tea made with rich black tea and spices like cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and pepper, as well as heavy milk, states www. chai-tea.org. Many tea afficionados say that loose teas typically have more antioxidants than tea bags, which may contain more tea “dust” due to over-processing. Loose teas use the whole leaf. Anyone can enjoy loose tea by investing in an inexpensive tea infuser. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Research at Pace University has indicated that white tea can retard the growth of bacteria that causes infections. Green tea: These leaves are oxidized more than white tea, but less than black tea. According to Lipton, this produces a light, fragrant tea. The lack of oxidation will contribute to the low caffeine content of green tea. Like white tea, the catechins in green tea are potent microbials and may even inhibit cancer growth, according to The National Cancer Institute. Oolong tea: Falling between green and black teas, oolong tea is created when the oxidation process is halted just as the leaves start to turn brown. Oolong tea is

YORK Cape Elizabeth author and educational facilitator Nancy Freund Bills’ husband and son were kayaking in the ocean when both were struck by lightning. The freak incident left her son in critical condition but claimed the life of her husband. His was the first of several deaths that would change the course of Bills’ life in just a few short years, and she wrote of her experience in an award-winning book titled The Red Ribbon: A Memoir of Lightning and Rebuilding After Loss. Bills will read from her book at York Public Library on Tuesday, June 25, at 7 p.m. Locals and those “from away” will find much to hold their interest as they learn that the 1994 storm occurred at Kittery’s very own Fort Foster, on Gerrish Island. Both victims were rushed to York Hospital, where the author’s life was forever changed as the consequences of the lightning strike unfolded. In the ensuing

years, Bills would face the death of not only her father and mother, but of other family members. Amidst the loss and tragedy, Bills managed to heal old wounds as she moved forward with newfound wisdom and compassion. The Red Ribbon earned a coveted Starred Review — reserved for exceptional titles — from the well-respected publication Kirkus Reviews, which concluded that the memoir is “a keeper of a book by a talented author.” Bills’ other writings have appeared in a variety of publications, including The Maine Review, the Goose River Anthology, and The 83rd Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition Collection. Copies of The Red Ribbon will be available for purchase (checks preferred) and signing at the reading. York Public Library is located at 15 Long Sands Road, York. For details, call 207-363-2818 or visit www.york.lib.me.us.

We’re accepting books (especially current fiction!), children’s books, DVDs, music CDs and audio books on CD. Items must be in very good condition. We cannot take video or audio cassettes, textbooks, or books that are damaged or moldy. Donations can be dropped off in the craft area of the Children’s Room during regular library hours until Saturday, July 6.

KITTERY The vote was unanimous: congregants of Second Christian Congregational United Church of Christ voted to be an “Open and Affirming church at a special meeting on June 2. “Open and Affirming (ONA) refers to a formal designation in which a church publicly declares that people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning (LQBTQ) are welcome to enjoy and participate in its full life and ministry. Second Christian’s Open and Affirming Statement aims to be inclusive of many dimensions, and includes “persons of every age, gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identify and expression, mental and physical

We celebrate the sacredness of every person as a child of God. While Second Christian has long been recognized by guests, neighbors, and local businesses as a welcoming place, the ONA designation makes it clear to adults who identify as one or more of the identities included in the LGBTQ moniker – as well as their parents, children, and allies – that they can feel comfortable walking into the church for worship and to participate in activities. At Second Christian, church members went through more than a year of discussion, study, and prayer to understand the related terms and issues of LGBTQ persons before undertaking the vote on June 2. In several “Second Hour meetings after service, church members and guests provided insight into their personal experiences, including a moving presentation in March by guest Gerri Cannon, a NH State Representative, who is a transgender woman. The ONA process was initiated by Pastor Brad Hirst over two years ago. His vision was carried forward by a small group of “ONA Shepherds who organized events, provided food for after-services presentations, and made themselves available to answer questions

Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Is it OK to leave a DVD disk in the computer all the time or should it be removed? If not, what could possibly happen! Thank you for such a wonderful, informing and easy to understand site! Audrey Dear Audrey, It is fine to leave a DVD disk in the drive. The only thing that you might notice is that the disk will spin every time you turn your computer on, and it might take a little longer for the computer to start up, since it will check the contents of the disk for bootable files. I quite often leave disks in the optical drive. Sometimes on purpose, but more often, I just forget it is there. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Will you just tell me how to copy a CD? I have a new computer with widow 10. Thank you, and God bless you. Joseph Dear Joseph, If you have a CD with documents or photos on it, you can just insert the Disk, and

drag the files to a folder on your hard drive. Once the files have been copied to your hard drive, put in a blank disk, and drag the files from your hard drive to the new disk. If you have a music CD or a bootable disk, you want to first make sure you have the legal permission to copy the disk. Then, I would use a third party software package like Roxio Creator or Nero. Both of those programs have a simple disk copy feature that will walk you through making a complete copy of your disk. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a question. I got a new computer Windows 10 and changed my E- mail to gmail. I had eliminated the inbound message when I replied and was able to erase the list of names on a Forwarding on my old system, but I cannot discover how to do that with gmail. Can you help me? Thank you so much. Lou Dear Lou, I think one answer will be able to help you with both issues. Just hit the “Forward or “Reply button before you try

to delete the original message or the list of forwarded names. Once you click on “Forward or “Reply, you will be able to highlight the list of recipients for the original message and then delete them. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am having problems with my MSN email (through Hotmail) and would like to eliminate it. Following your advice in your newsletter I have been using Gmail as my primary now for two years, but still would like to have a secondary email. Actually some people require a back-up one. Which is safe and almost as free of spam as Gmail? Thank you! Mili Dear Mili, I don’t know of any email server that filters out the spam as well as Gmail, in fact, that is the biggest reason that I switched over to Gmail. You might try the email address available to you through your Internet Service Provider. An email address is usually included with your internet access, and you would have better tech support in case

Thanks to you all, 26 kittens found their homes as did two “adult kittens too! The outpouring of wonderful adopters and generous donors too who showed up was heartwarming to see! Speaking of “adult kittens, meet “KitKat! KitKat is a female tiger kitty approximately 3-4 years old that is seeking her furever home. KitKat was found as a stray and has been with us for almost six months now. She is quite the character and very unique! If you are looking for a cool cat, this girl fits the bill and then some! She is a selfassured, sassy girl who loves to be pet and be “the boss as the independent yet sweet cat she is. Once KitKat gets to know you she is very at ease, loving and a loyal girl She has a crinkled ear, likely from frostbite or ear mites in her past,

yet only adding to her uniqueness. KitKat would do best in a home where she is the only cat, we do not know how she would feel about sharing a home with a dog either. SPORTS

York Women’s Golf

Popular Sports for Spring and Summer Sports are a favorite pastime for many children and adults. The benefits of participating in sports are too numerous to mention, but include learning to be part of a team, improving physical fitness and developing sportsmanship. The fitness building resource PHITAmerica notes that participation in sports helps build character and social skills. Sports help children develop discipline and encourages them set goals. These are skills that can be utilized later in life, especially when pursuing a career. As the weather warms, there are many different spring and summer sports that children and adults can explore. Here are just some of the sports that make spring and summer that much more fun. Baseball: Baseball has long been America’s pastime, but its fan base stretches around the world. According to an annual report by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, a leader in sports participation research, baseball and softball combined

ranked as the most participated in team sport in 2016. Many youngsters start out on youth baseball or softball teams and move up the ranks as their love of the game grows. Lacrosse: This is a team game originally played by North American native peoples. The ball is thrown, caught and carried with a long-handled stick having a curved L-shape or a triangular frame. Soccer: Soccer’s popularity continues to grow exponentially. It is often one of the first sports a child will try. In a 2017 Nielsen survey that spanned 18 global markets, 43 percent of people said they were “interested or “very interested in the sport. It has grown to become the world’s sport, with teams in most major countries. Softball: A close cousin to baseball, softball is played on a smaller diamond with a ball that’s larger than a baseball. Even though both sexes can play softball, it is primarily a female-driven sport among elementary, high school and college players.

Swimming: Swimming is a sport that works the entire body. People are drawn to swimming because it can be a low-impact exercise. Whether enjoyed competitively or for recreation, swimming is a great way to have fun while exercising. Tennis: Tennis is a physical sport that provides cardiovascular exercise. Tennis offers friendly competition and can be played in singles or pairs. While matches primarily take place outdoors, the weather doesn’t have to impact access when an indoor court is available. Volleyball: Beach volleyball is popular in coastal and non-coastal communities alike. It is an intense, competitive sport that requires excellent focus and teamwork.
