South Berwick’s 43rd Annual Strawberry Festival SOUTH BERWICK Always the last Saturday in June, this year’s Strawberry Festival will be held on June 30, officially kicking off summer for the residents of South Berwick. All over town one can see the bright red, white, and green strawberry flags that line the main streets and hang from many houses. The day is filled with food, entertainment, games, and crafts. For forty-three consecutive years, hundreds of volunteers from the community have come together for this locale-centered tradition. As always, official festival activities will take place within the boundaries of Central School, located on Main Street in

the center of town. A stop at the Strawberry Festival information booth is a must-do, to find out more about the scheduling for entertainment venues, vendor

booth locations, and activities throughout the fair grounds. At the information booth you can also purchase the official Strawberry Festival t-shirt.

Strawberry shortcakes have always been a favorite so that the order line wends across the front lawn of the school. The volunteer staff will begin serving at 9 a.m. and continue until they run out of supplies. More than 250 cases of fresh strawberries, 70 gallons of freshly whipped cream, 300 dozen biscuits, and 60 luscious cheesecakes, will be prepared and served. The greater portion of the courtyard is ringed by a huge section of food booths offering items such as fruit cups and smoothies, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and cold drinks, fried dough, lobster rolls, and entire BBQ chicken meals. A commu-

nity pancake breakfast eill be hosted 6-10 a.m. Food items are prepared and sold by local non-profit groups which include the fire department, Knights of Columbus, military veterans, Masons, Rotarians, and student groups. Entertainment will be held on the front and back stages, offering a mix of folk music, jazz, rock, and dancing. Check out the local performers such as the Irish Step Dancers, Sophie Towle, and Texas Pete. Over 90 juried artisans will be on hand to display and sell their hand-made wares, includ-

maple products to include an “added sugar” label, despite being pure, single ingredient foods. The FDA had stated the change was meant to help consumers be aware of the amount of sugar they are consuming, but maple and honey producers expressed concerns that the new labels could mislead consumers into believing that sugar was added after harvesting. “This is simply common sense – if sugar is not added to the product, it should not need a label for ‘added sugar,’” said Senator King. “I am glad that

the FDA has recognized the difference between the policy’s original intent and the possible impact on honey and maple producers. These are multi-million dollar industries for Maine, and I hope to work with the FDA as they craft a new policy that gives consumers the facts they need without harming our pure products.” Senator King has strongly opposed this proposed regulation, and last week spoke on the Senate floor to urge the FDA to reconsider its approach. York River Watershed Stewardship Plan Released

ELIOT, KITTERY, SOUTH BERWICK, YORK The York River Study Committee invites feedback on its recently released Draft York River Watershed Stewardship Plan. The Stewardship Plan is a voluntary guidance document that provides recommendations and strategies to support the work of communities, conservation organizations, community groups and individuals interest-

ed in the long-term protection of the York River and its watershed resources. The York River watershed is the area of land in parts of York, Eliot, Kittery and South Berwick from which water flows to the York River, either directly or first to a tributary stream that eventually flows to the York River. The Stewardship Plan characterizes the many resources and values that make this wa-

tershed special, such as the historic buildings and structures, archaeological heritage, working waterfront, scenic views, wildlife habitat, rare plants and animals, and clean water. The Stewardship Plan identifies wide-ranging stewardship actions that are intended to protect or enhance important resources for current and future generations. To develop the plan, the York River Study Committee reviewed existing watershed reports and data, the four towns’ comprehensive plans, other state and regional plans and programs related to watershed resources, and new data from recent studies. In addition, the Study Committee sought extensive input from resource experts, town boards and committees, conservation and preservation groups, state agency representatives, and towns’ citizens through many meetings, presen-

Development of the York River Watershed Stewardship Plan is a culmination of the three-year York River Wild and Scenic Study to evaluate a possible designation for the York River and its major tributaries into the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Later this year, the York River Study Committee will be seeking endorsement from the four watershed towns to pursue a Partnership Wild and Scenic River designation for the York River and its major tributaries. This event is open to anyone in the community who would like to participate as either a vendor of a small business, or someone wanting an opportunity to sell “yard sale style items at the Meetinghouse rather than their own home. The Historical Society will offer 8’ x 5’ spaces for $25 and participants must bring their own table and are responsible for all set-up/take-down of equipment and goods. There are a limited number of spaces available, and those interested are advised to buy a space early as the deadline is Tuesday, June 26. Members of the Historical Society are invited to donate vintage and quality items to HSWO

prior to the event. All proceeds from the sale of these items will go to the upkeep of Meetinghouse Museum. Current projects include restoration of the 1865 Sheffield Bell in the historic building’s bell tower. Memberships on the senior, individual, and family levels are available at an annual cost ranging from $10 to $35. If members are unable to bring item(s) to the Meetinghouse, but would still like to make a donation, the Society has volunteers to pick them up. We whole heartedly thank you in advance for your generous donations! There will also be an old fashioned lemonade stand with goodies from Congdon’s Doughnuts. For more information, contact Julia at 207-646-4775 or email info@wohistory.org.

Assessors to Conduct Cyclical Inspections on Tax Map 9 KITTERY In an effort to maintain fair and equitable assessments for all properties, the firm of Municipal Resources, Inc. (Contract Assessor’s Agent), is performing a cyclical review of all properties in the Town. They will visit roughly 25% of the properties each year to check for accurate measurements and to verify all pertinent data of each improvement. The current round of inspections will take place within Tax Map 9 from Monday, June 18 through Tuesday, July 31. All assessing staff will adhere to the following guide-

lines: Staff will be wearing identification badges, will have signs on their vehicles and will have introduction letters from the Town showing their vehicle information and Town contact information. A typical inspection takes around 10 minutes. If no one is home, exterior measurements of all improvements will be taken. A letter may be sent in the future which will inform owners of dates and times in which appointments for an interior inspection can be arranged. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am using Mozilla Thunderbird on my new laptop. All new emails show at the bottom of the page. Is there a way to reverse that so that the new ones are at the top? Thank you for your help, Wendy Dear Wendy, For sorting your emails in Thunderbird, you can change the sort order by clicking right on the word, “Date at the top of the column. You will notice there is a small triangle to the right of the word, “Date and by click-

ing, you change the direction the triangle is pointing in. This toggles the sort order every time you click from oldest first to newest first and back again. Elizabeth. Dear Computer Lady, Hi, I’m new at saving music on my iPad & I have somehow downloaded 3 full albums When I meant to just choose a few songs. Does this affect my storage, or cost me battery time? If not then I don’t want to delete them. Thanks, Pat Dear Pat, The albums will take up more space on your iPad than a few songs, so, yes it will affect your storage. However, having more songs on your iPad will not make the battery wear out any faster. So, if you currently have plenty of storage space, keep them on your iPad, but when the time comes that you are getting short on space, then

you can delete the songs you don’t want on there. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have recently had issues with my PC in being able to view certain programs or to operate them at all. I use Windows 10. I suspect this is the culprit. I have been using Turbotax for years. MY 2016 version worked at first then stopped allowing me to access it at all. Even the Turbotax folks couldn’t help me. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but without success. Any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it? Turbotax pointed the finger at Windows 10. I don’t have proof, but I suspect they are right. Help! Thank you, Dave Dear Dave, While I can’t tell you exactly what is wrong without actually running some diagnostics on the computer, I did want to tell you not to fall for the blame game. Windows 10 has been around for a while now, and in my experience it is a nice, solid operating system. When you are a phone tech support person for a company, and everything you try to fix the problem doesn’t work, what is the easiest thing to do? Blame it on someone elses product! I sometimes talk to customers after they have called multiple companies, and each one points the finger at the next. The problem you describe could be the result of hard drive problems, or it could be that your windows installation has become corrupt and you might need to re-install. But even if it is a corrupt operating system, remember that this can happen with any operating system, not just Windows 10. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ When Actors Become Directors, A Review of “Lend Me a Tenor” BERWICK “Lend Me a Tenor” is a comedy, with a 1930s setting and a slow-paced buildup. Slow-paced, that is, until director Danica Carlson gets her hands on it. “We took a period piece which should be staid and reserved and made the characters wear pink argyle socks and do somersaults off the bed backwards,” said Carlson, who directs the show into a farcical frenzy at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. Being able to switch a comedy show into a full-out farce, add color where she wants it, or control the pacing of a show and its humor is exactly what made this longtime performer jump from acting into directing. “I realized I had strong feelings. I liked having control over the whole thing from start to finish,” said Carlson, 34, who has appeared in the past as an actor on Hackmatack’s stage. Although it actors sometimes try their hand at directing, most theater folks sit firmly on one side of the aisle or the other. For Carlson, now the resident director at Rochester Opera House, the urge to direct the show sits right

along side her zeal for performing. Originally trained to sing opera, Carlson left high school to pursue a career in the theater and soon found herself at the San Francisco Conservatory, where enthusiastic coaches were shipping her to Italy and other far-flung locals to sing the parts of tragic heroes. This, Carlson decided, was not her calling. “I do not love opera,” she said. “It’s always people who cheated or who killed themselves on swords.” After opera, Carlson switched to musicals, but a rare talent of crying on demand led her to be cast in one drama after another. Soon after, she realized she actually loved comedy and joined Portsmouth-based comedy troupe Darwin’s Waiting Room. She has had steady work throughout her career, a fact she doesn’t take for granted. While performing, Carlson would often seeing the parts of the show she wished were handled differently change. As an actor she had power only over her own role, and sometimes not even entirely

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ is one of the many excellent elements in the production that boasts a strong cast, fabulous voices and fast-paced choreography. At first glance, “Oklahoma!” seems dated and corny with its storyline set in a simpler time and place — the Oklahoma Territory in 1906 as it sits on the cusp of becoming a state. But on closer inspection, Oklahoma! is as current as the #MeToo movement and daily news reports about angry skirmishes and heated fighting between different factions.

In “Oklahoma!,” it’s Laurey, the feisty farm girl who fears for her safety at the hands of Jud, the troubled and troubling farm hand who forces himself on her. And the high spirited rivalry in this story is between the cowboys and the farmers, both intent on protecting their right to work the land as they see fit — whether it’s herding cattle or growing crops. Rodgers & Hammerstein broke the traditional musical mold when they wrote “Oklahoma!” in 1943. They adapted the show from Lynn Riggs’ play “ Green Grow the Lilacs,” which was produced on Broadway in 1931. The new musical — the first of several they wrote in one of Broadway’s most successful partnerships —was the first to freely integrate music, dance, characterization and story. It details the day-to-day life and struggles of ordinary people, with the necessary romance and comedy required for a successful musical. The story takes place all on one day, aside from the last scene, which ties up everything. It focuses on Curly and Laurey and their “will she or won’t she” courtship as he stops by to see if she’ll join him that night at the box social. Alas, Jud, the brooding farmhand, has already asked her and she’s too fearful to break the date. The

Thank You

comic couple, Ado Annie and Will Parker, add much needed levity to the production and light up the stage with their antics. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s dazzling score is the true star of the show. Most of the tunes have been etched in our collective memories — “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin,’” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “Kansas City,” “I Cain’t Say No,” and “People Will Say We’re in Love,” as well the title tune. But without great voices, the music falls flat. And the Playhouse once again lives up to its reputation of casting its shows with dynamic players who sing fabulously, all under Fred Hanson’s direction. Lukas brings Curly to life with his good looking charm. Taylor Quick is his equal as Laurey, feisty and fun, but fearful around Jud. Timothy John Smith is a fearsome Jud, a glowering, towering presence over the light-hearted box social proceedings. Colby Dezelick and Chessa Metz are a delight as Will Parker and Ado Annie, his “cain’t say no” girlfriend. Susann Fletcher is a strong Aunt Eller, presiding over proceedings with strength and conviction. And Martin Sola gives the peddler Ali Hakim a clever, comic spin. The rest of the strong ensemble is likeable and they dance incredibly, too. The show clocks in at just under three hours —a bit long, perhaps, for today’s audiences who survive on 30-second sound bites. But with the mesmerizing music and knock-out performances, you’ll find yourself singing “oh, what a beautiful evening” as you leave the Playhouse after this dazzling production of “Oklahoma!”

An “Oklahoma!’ that’s ‘A-OK’

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT “Oh, what a beautiful mornin’! Oh, what a beautiful day!” Curly, the handsome leading man in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!,” ambled on stage singing the opening line to that memorable tune and sounds of recognition rippled through the

audience at last Friday’s opening night of the Ogunquit Playhouse’s new production of the landmark show. We’d heard the song dozens, even hundreds, of times before. But it’s still fresh, exciting and new as performed by Stephen Mark Lukas, whose marvelous voice equals his fresh-faced good looks. The Playhouse is celebrating the show’s 75th anniversary with this spectacular, dance-heavy production. And Lukas’ performance

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ The Accidental Artist, Debbie Mueller Art Show SOUTH BERWICK Emporium Framing and Gallery, 261 Main Street, South Berwick, is kicking off the Summer season with artwork by self-described “late-bloomer” artist, Debbie Mueller. Her impressionistic oil paintings capture the stark light, canopied shadows, and the fresh and lazy feel of summer in New England. In Debbie’s words: This is the story of an accidental artist, the story of an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, Mother, and Wife, who discovers, at the age of 56, that she is a painter…I am the daughter of an artist mother, and crafty father, and had always seen myself as having received

my father’s genes. I pursued many craft hobbies, leaving the fine art to my mother. When visiting my parents in February of 2016, my life was forever changed – on a rainy afternoon,

with nothing else planned, a set of acrylic paints appeared, and I produced my first painting of a dock at dusk. Since then, I have not stopped learning, and have not stopped painting. I transitioned from acrylic paint to oil, and explored a variety of subjects. I have studied with Susan Schwake, Tom Glover, Pamela DuLong Williams, Todd Bonita, Stan Moeller, David Lussier, and Sean Beavers. As I find my voice, I am also finding an audience for my work in the Seacoast and beyond. I delight in having discovered this hidden passion, and look forward to living the rest of my life as an artist.

While I am drawn to the landscape in all its wardrobe, my heart sings when I can paint the dance between light and shadow. Since taking up painting, Debbie’s work has been displayed widely in New England,

in both solo and group exhibitions, including juried shows. The opening reception will be held at Emporium Framing and Gallery 5-7 p.m. on June 22. For details, call 207-384-5963 or visit emporiumframing.com.

Matt Gunn Featured Artist at Clay Hill Farm CAPE NEDDICK To honor Ogunquit’s longstanding history as an artists’ colony and showcase the local artists in the community today, Clay Hill Farm launched the NEW! #VerandArt Project this past spring. Every 6-8 weeks a local artist is featured at Clay Hill Farm – their collection hung in the Veranda Room, with a Meet & Greet Artist Reception to open the show. Local Artist, Matt Gunn, will be the next featured artist. Local artist, Amy Kelly of Talespin Studio in Ogunquit, is the curator of the project. Gunn grew up in Portsmouth, NH, and has lived all his life in the coastal New Hampshire and Southern Maine area – finding inspiration for his art through his extensive travels

and time spent as a fireman, forester, fisherman, and landscape designer. It’s through the lens of a lifetime spent in keen observance of the world around him that Gunn produces his colorful folksy works. “I’ve simply always drawn and painted,” explains Gunn. “My mother studied art history in college and I grew up with the books. Now as an adult, I’ve had the great fortune to travel extensively and see much of that work in person. I suspect that, and the

simple joy of painting, is why I’ve begun painting again.” Gunn’s collection can be viewed in the Veranda Room through August 6. More information is available at, www.clayhillfarm.com, on the #VerandArt Project page.

provements are being planned, especially the youngest household residents who may not be responsible enough to avoid accidents and injuries. According to a recent Vital Signs report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidental injuries are a leading cause of death among the country’s youth — with one fatality occurring every hour from something entirely preventable. The CDC notes that the leading causes of child injury include suffocation, drowning, poisoning, fires, and falls. More can be done to keep children safe, and many strategies start at home. Install security systems A security system can be just as effective at keeping little ones inside as it is at keeping unwanted guests outside. Alarms can be set to sound anytime a window or door is breached, which can deter curious children from trying to leave the house without permission. Pair the alarm system with secure locks and high latches that can also stop children in their tracks. Remove fall hazards Safety devices installed on windows that are above ground level can keep children safe. Stair rails should be secure and in good working order. Temporary gates can block kids from getting on stairways. Improve lighting around staircases to help children and adults avoid falls, and remove any obstacles. ...REVIEW from page 7 there, which left her hungry for more control. Before making the shift in 2007, when she directed the Libertine at the Player’s Ring in Portsmouth, Carlson worried she would be jealous of actors in her shows. To combat that, she initially picked plays to direct that she did not want want to act in. She soon found that this generally wasn’t a problem. She admits, though, that with “Lend Me A Tenor all set to roll, she looks enviously at the role of Maria, a character who reminds Carlson of her many lively Italian aunts. Set in 1934 Cleveland,“Lend Me A Tenor revolves around the Cleveland Grand Opera Company as it gets ready to welcome the greatest tenor in the world for a one-night performance of Otello. Maria is the wife of the star opera singer, Tito. As a director, Carlson is drawn to creating farce and bringing it to its extreme. When she heard “Lend Me A Tenor was being performed this summer at Hackmatack she was immediately interested. She knew exactly how far she wanted to take this Tony Award-Winning show set. “I added a fart machine, and the show has really gone crazy, she said, explaining that as a farce, it goes way beyond real life. “In real life, no one gets

excited and does somersaults off a bed, she said. “I get to take the beautiful framework of comedy and make it bigger. FMI: www.hackmatack.org or 207-698-1807. This review was submitted by Amy Ruth.

Terrorism Expert Speaks to WHS Students

WELLS An expert in communications and terrorism recently spoke about his work to a large group of Wells High School students. Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Buffalo, Mark G. Frank, Ph.D. focused on lying. He showed video clips to demonstrate how a trained interviewer

can detect when someone is lying through careful observation of subtle “micro facial expressions and body language. But this is just one aspect of Dr. Frank’s research and teaching career. He has a long list of accomplishments including training over 1,000 law enforcement agencies and being a founding member of the FBI’s Terrorism

Several of the video clips shown were research videos featuring college students either truthfully answering questions or putting on an act to conceal lying in their answers. Sometimes deception in someone is not so easy to spot without the aid of technology. At one point in a video deposition for a civil case that involved him, OJ Simpson is shown a photograph of himself wearing a pair of Bruno Magli shoes. Buried in that split-second of deposition footage is a remarkable image of a wide-eyed and seemingly horri-

fied Simpson as he discovers that he is wearing that brand of shoes in the photo, shoes he indicated once that he would never wear, and a brand of shoes worn by the murderer in the 1994 murder of his wife and friend, a crime Simpson was acquitted of earlier in a criminal trial in Los Angeles. “It’s always important for students to understand how science ultimately gets deployed, said Dr. Frank. He believes students need to understand how seemingly insignificant experiments such as researching facial expressions can ultimately lead to something major including apprehending terrorists. He hopes presentations like this will help bring science to life for students so that they can make informed decisions when, as voting citizens,

This presentation was planned by WHS social studies teacher Kevin O’Shaughnessy who commented later that student responses to the lecture were “very positive. O’Shaughnessy has hosted previous lectures by Dr. Frank in his AP Psychology class. This lecture was held primarily for sophomores in World After 1945 classes taught by O’Shaughnessy and colleague Kristen Thompson. That course includes a study unit on terrorism. “Students were genuinely interested in Dr. Frank’s information on profiling, commented Thompson. “They related to his sense of humor and were an involved audience.

Davin Timothy Clark, 7 NORTH BERWICK – Davin Timothy Clark, age 7, passed away June 9, 2018 alongside his father Kevin Clark in a tragic motor vehicle accident. Davin was born January 23, 2011 in Newburyport, MA, son of Kevin C. Clark and Jessica Prest Clark and everyone immediately fell in love. Davin was a sponge for learning, always asking how things worked and why. He was wise beyond his 7 years and his thoughtfulness and politeness will never be forgotten; with a smile that lit up the room. Davin picked flowers for his school bus driver often. He loved nature and all of the animals, especially his chicken Blackie, cat Crackers, and goat

Paxton which he nursed from a bottle. Davin had plans to buy a red Corvette, which started his strong work ethic, working with his Nanna and Grampy at the goat farm where he was lovingly called “Vinnie bag of donuts. He a budding geologist, collecting and learning about stones and gems that he found. Mostly, Davin loved

Kevin C. Clark, 29 NORTH BERWICK – Kevin C. Clark, 29, of Wilmer Chase Road, passed away tragically in a motor vehicle accident June 9, 2018, alongside his son, Davin Clark, age 7. He was born October 14, 1988 in Salem, MA, son of Melissa J. Clark and Kevin Dube and currently working in road construction for GCS in Salisbury, MA. Having grown up in a large Italian family, Kevin was always surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins making family very important to him. He enjoyed his times camping, fishing, playing cards, and swimming at the family camp in Orono. Kevin was incredibly mechanical and loved anything automotive. He and his son Davin loved four-wheelers, muscle cars, and attending car shows. Kevin’s greatest love was for his two sons, Davin and Chason. He and Davin played endless hours of X-box and loved a good day of fishing. Kevin will forever be missed by his wife Jessica of New Port Richey, FL; mother

Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. ...SIBLINGS from page 7 er. Earning a BFA at UNH, Wendy embarked on a journey that took her from early pastel portraits, graphic arts and illustration to painting Maine landscapes. She is inspired by examining the natural world and capturing its beauty in water color, gouache, acrylics and oil. As a child, Peter built his share of forts and treehouses which led him to construction as a young adult. Over the years Peter learned about the properties of wood first-hand, taking on numerous woodworking projects including restoring a 1946 racing sloop. In 2014 he built a timber frame barn to house his woodworking shop and Meadowlark Designs materialized. Peter now designs and hand crafts fine artisan furniture with traditional joinery, finishing each piece by hand using all natural plantbased finishes. For details, visit www. meadowlarkdesigns.net.

~ Pets ~ Another Chance Animal Rescue

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Della is the delightful, dainty, double-toed momma of Cocoa Puff, Bert, and Ernie. She’s also a purrfect example of feline motherhood. This little darling was a stray who was still a kitten herself, pregnant and homeless. All four have been rescued. All-black Della has the sweetest personality and adores her babies, who are beautiful. All boast vivid tiger stripes and the cutest faces. Little Cocoa Puff is especially bonded to Della, so they must be adopted together. Bert and Ernie are silly little mischief makers and eachother’s sidekick. If you’ve ever been interested in a pair of kittens who will entertain themselves while you’re at work, you must meet them. They’re ready for adoption and waiting to meet you at our Adoption Center in Wells. Last week, two delightful 11-year-old girls arrived at Safe Haven carrying a check that was bigger than they were. Grace and Natalie, who had named themselves “The Mad Batters, made brownies and cookies and sold them at all the sporting event at their school in Wells. Safe Haven is so truly thankful to them for their kindness and hard work. This weekend (June 22-24) we invite you to Safe Haven’s big June Yard Sale at the Adoption Center, 1420 Post Road (Route 1) next to Wells Public Library. The library has graciously allowed the

Safe Haven Humane Society

use of their rear parking lot for extra parking. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 on Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. (Psst – at closing time, we invite the public to “Fill a Box for a $5!)

NORTH BERWICK Hello, my name is “Beanie Baby and I am by far cuter than the little stuffed toy animals I was named after by my former humans who were unable to keep me. I’m much softer and very friendly too. While most ladies don’t reveal their age, I’m happy to tell you that I’m a young 2-3 year old female who is completely vetted with all shots and spayed. My ideal fur-ever home would be one with respectful children and if persuaded and gradually introduced, I bet I could get along with another dog

or cat (may cost you some extra tuna treats!). Please come meet me and my other kitty roommates this Saturday, June 23, during Open Adoption hours 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Sanford Adoption Facility, 251 Country Club Road (Route 4), Sanford. Because it’s National Pet Adoption Month, the center wants to sweeten the deal on adoptions by reducing our fees on all adult cats by $25 for the rest of the month of June! Elder-

~ Sports ~ Kennebunk Superstar Road Race Volunteer Retiring After 16 Years KENNEBUNK The Kennebunk Free Library’s annual Road Race has grown from about 75 participants to nearly 600 in its 21 years and is KFL’s biggest fundraiser that brings in more than $30,000 per year. It takes dozens of generous businesses and individuals to donate time, money,

tion to her actual job as Office Manager for a management consulting firm in Portland, where she has worked since 1999. As Collard puts it, “from the end of January until May, sleep is optional. Collard’s first involvement with the Road Race was as a runner in the 3rd and 4th Editions. By the 5th Edition, Collard was recruited by the

food, raffle items and more to put on this event and most would agree that no one has worked harder than Teri Collard who is retiring this year after 16 years of volunteering. Collard has put in hundreds of hours each year volunteering for the Road Race as well as helped organize the Town of Kennebunk’s May Day festival. All of this in addi-

Board to volunteer. From there she put her valuable organizational skills to work and literally helped reinvent the race making improvements every year.

SCOREBOARD

York Women’s Golf League Monday, June 18 The York Women’s Golf League (YWGL) teams began play during the hot, humid conditions of the late afternoon and finished abruptly later in the evening due to torrential rain and thunderstorms. Some teams were only able to complete 6 out of 9 holes so scoring was based on points made on the first six holes alone. With that abbreviated scoring, the team standings are as follows: Paula Dargan’s Team 5 is in first place with 183 points; followed by Team 6 led by Debbie Erikson is in second place with 178 points. In third place with 174 points is Sandy Petrovich’s Team 4. Team 2, captained by Liz Nolan, is close behind in fourth place with 173 points and Teams 1 and 3, led by Peggy Todd and Linda Jellison, are in fifth and sixth place with 162 and 146 points respectively. YWGL’s new equitable play format allows league players to play with team members and opponents of all levels. In only the second week of play, the benefits of this format are evident and the group is clearly having fun while they improve their game!
