Both ladies received the Outstanding Entry from Maine award. National History Day is a nationally recognized academic enrichment program promoting the study of history in schools. The program is modeled after science fairs and encourages students to take a creative approach to studying history. Participating students develop research papers, exhibits, documentaries, performances, or websites based on a topic they select connected to an annual theme. These entries are then evaluated by educators and people working in the field of history. The 2017 theme, “Taking a Stand in History, encouraged students to explore many interesting topics related to local, state, national, and world history. “A Gundalow Adventure for Children

KITTERY The Kittery Historical and Naval Museum host "A Gundalow Adventure for Children" on Friday June 30, at 11 a.m. This event will take place at the Kittery Historical & Naval Museum and is free for children ages 6-12. Take a trip though time and explore the Piscataqua Region with stories, activities and crafts.

Using models and maps, learn about the historical role of the Gundalows that were built to carry lumber, salt marsh hay, oysters, bricks, pipe staves and coal on the shallow rivers where big ships could not go. Take a look at the amazing network of waterways and read some books about the river, including life in the waters. Children can test their skills as a

sailor by tying some knots, building their own Gundalow model and designing plankton. This is a perfect opportunity to teach kids about local history and get them involved by using hands-on activities. For more information: kitterymuseum.com; 207-439-3080.

Annual Wells Antique Show

WELLS The 17th annual Wells Antiques Show and Sale will be held this year on Sunday, June 25, on the spectacular seaside grounds of the historic Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm. The show is an effort to bring buyers and vacationers from the Northeast and Canada to the many antique shops in Wells, and to introduce them to the wonders of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm.

Wells has been called the “Antiques Center of Maine because you can find more than 50 antique and rare book shops offering treasures of country pieces, fine period furniture, primitives or collectibles. Heralded as one of the best antiques shows in New England, more than 75 exhibitors from all over New England and beyond will be displaying and selling antiques in every area of the market

under large and small tents, in the barn, and in the open. Visitors will find the show wellrounded with an exciting variety of antiques in all price ranges. Adult admission is $7 each ($6 with the ad appearing elsewhere in this paper) and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Show hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and the show will be held ‘rain or shine.’ Laudholm Farm is located off Route 1 in Wells, midway between Exits 19 and

Entwining figurative and abstract elements with universal themes, Barnet’s artistic practice charts an extraordinary progression through a lifetime of work. John Marin: On the Verge of Wilderness features twentyfive seldom seen paintings made during Marin’s time along the coast and captures his sense of reverence for the natural forces at play in what he described as “on the verge of wilderness. Marin arrived in Maine in August, 1914 and spent the next four decades finding inspiration in the tides, weather, horizons, and experiences of Maine. This exhibit presents a journey through the artist’s watercolors and a compelling chapters in the history of American painting.

but a form of personal service contracts between doctors and patients. Maine is the first state in New England and the 23rd in the Union to enact such a law. Direct Primary Care is a new model of practicing primary care which eliminates all third-party influence from the doctor-patient relationship by having patients enter into a service agreement with the physician. Patients often find paying into the monthly, quarterly or annual agreement, in exchange for direct round-the-clock access to their physician, most laboratory, procedural and consultative services and clinic visits, an affordable and more personalized option. This model also allows physicians greater control over their practice. New England Direct Primary Care Alliance (NEDPCA) Founding Members from Maine, Drs. Michael Ciampi,

Peter Sacchetti, and Brian Pierce were integral in drafting the Act Governing Direct Primary Care Service Agreements, which stipulates DPC service agreements are not insurance and therefore not be subject to regulation by the Maine State Bureau of Insurance. The delineation also ensures that patients are free to seek care outside of an insurance plan and pay for such care. Currently, there are 8 physicians now practicing in various locations around central and southern Maine, with more practices adopting this valued model of healthcare delivery. The bill, introduced by Maine State Senator Rod Whittemore, ensures that DPC practices in Maine can continue to grow and flourish. “The direct primary care model provides more options for consumers seeking affordable, high quality primary care and

Go Red Maine Purse-onality KENNEBUNKPORT Join the inaugural Purseonality event on Wednesday, June 28, featuring a silent auction of more than 25 purse packages donated by local supporters. The Nonantum Resort, 95 Ocean Ave, Kennebunkport, from 5-7 p.m. is the place to celebrate the Go Red movement to increase awareness of heart diseases and stroke—and to inspire women to take charge of their own heart health. Each purse in the silent auction is hand selected and filled with items and mementoes that reflect the "purseonality" of the contributor. Tickets are $40 ($50 day of). Many of the American Heart Association events sell out early so don't wait and be left out of the fun. Appetizers will be provided along with a cash bar. An educational component will be included to provide attendees a better understanding about women and heart disease, the top killer of women. For more information about this year’s Purseonality event, visit our website at: purseonalitymaine.heart.org. If you are interested in donating a purse to the auction, contact Katie Rooks at 207-289-2388 or Katie.Rooks@heart.org.

STATEWIDE The 33rd Annual Trek Across Maine was attended by over 1,600 participants and 750 volunteers that concluded in mid June. The 3-day, 180 mile cycling tour, raising awareness and funding for lung disease, started at the mountains of the Sunday River Ski Resort and ended at the Sea of Belfast with the anticipation of raising $1.65 million for the American Lung Association. This annual event has raised more than $25 million to date.

For over 100 years, the American Lung Association has been at the forefront of improving lung health and preventing lung disease. All proceeds from the Trek Across Maine directly fund lung disease research, advocacy, and education; including COPD/asthma management, smoking cessation programs, and advocacy for stronger clean air standards. The American Lung Association in the Northeast serves CT, MA, ME, NH, NY, RI and VT. For more information: Lung.org.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Nearly $2 Million in Grants Awarded to Clean Up Maine STATEWIDE A combined total of $1.85 million in federal funding has been awarded for the assessment and cleanup of 9 Brownfields sites in Maine. The federal grants awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will assist local communities as they work to redevelop these contaminated sites in order to promote environmental integrity and future economic investment. “We are pleased that the EPA has designated these sites throughout Maine as recipients of the vital federal funding for Brownfields cleanups, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King said in a joint statement. “These grants represent a continued and welcomed investment in the environmental and economic revitalization of Maine communities.

The January 2017 assessment from the Economic Development Assessment Team (EDAT) – originally requested in March 2016 by Senators Collins and King – highlighted the importance of the Brownfields Program and its potential to leverage federal resources to redevelop former industrial sites, support the viability of impacted mill communities and help to grow Maine’s rural economy. A Brownfields site is a property that contains a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant, which hinders the potential to reuse or redevelop the site. The EPA's Brownfields Program assists states and local communities as they assess, safely clean up, and reuse brownfield sites for economic development projects. The funding is allocated as follows: Town of Berwick: $200,000 for cleanup; An-

droscoggin Valley Council of Governments: $200,000 for site assessment; City of Hallowell: $300,000 for site assessment; Maine Department of Environmental Protection: $300,000 for site assessment; City of Bangor: $200,000 for site assessment; Eastern Maine Development Corp. for the Town of Bucksport: $200,000 for an area-wide planning grant; $125,000 for technical assistance; Our Katahdin LLC for the Town of Millinocket: $200,000 for cleanup; $125,00 for technical assistance.

Dear Computer Lady, My desktop computer just gave me a message that my hard drive is ready to crash. Can I attach an external hard drive to backup all the files? Then can I use the external drive to run the desktop? Or do I need to replace the original drive? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Diane Dear Diane, If your hard drive is about to crash, then you need to backup the files as soon as possible, and in the meantime, don't use the computer! The more you use a computer when the hard drive is starting to fail, the less chance

you have of being able to recover your files. I would take it to a computer shop to get your files recovered, rather than trying to do it yourself. You can use an external hard drive to backup your files, but you will not be able to run the computer from that drive. You will need to get the internal hard drive replaced. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there a way to boot Windows 10 without putting in a password? Thanks, Ken Dear Ken, That depends...If you are signing into Windows 10 with your Microsoft account, then

you need the password. It helps to keep your information secure and keeps others from signing into their computer with your Microsoft account. A quick way to tell if you are signing in with your Microsoft account is to look at the user name. If it includes your email address, then you are probably signing in with your Microsoft account. If you are signing into Windows with a Microsoft account, you can switch from the Microsoft account to a local account. However, you will lose the advantages of using a Microsoft account like automatic syncing of your OneDrive folder. If you are signing into Windows 10 with a local account, you can actually change the settings so that you don't need a password. I will give you directions for both these things in the next couple of articles. Elizabeth

Raymond P. Chabot, 56 NORTH BERWICK – Raymond P. Chabot, 56, of Quarry Road, passed away peacefully at his home on June 14, 2017 after a brief illness. Ray was born in Sanford on June 17, 1960, the son of Alfred and Frances (Poisson) Chabot. He was a 1978 graduate of Sanford High School prior to attending USM for a brief time. He bought a home in North Berwick where he and his wife have resided for 37 years. He married the love of his life, Carmen Suarez in 1983. A welder and fabricator by trade, he worked for WASCO for 20 years, Shaw's Distribution for 25, and currently worked as a DSP at WABAN. Until recently, Ray owned Southern Maine Firearms in Sanford. He spent endless hours planting his gardens and spending time with his dogs; but his greatest love was his family. He was a self-proclaimed Chef who made his girls many meals. He made them laugh and supported them in everything they set out to do. Special memories were made at Great East Lake as well as in their own backyard. Ray lived and loved life to the fullest. He was pre-deceased by

his mother, Frances (Poisson) Chabot. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 34 years, Carmen (Suarez) Chabot, their two daughters, Courtney and Cassandra Chabot all of North Berwick; his parents, Alfred and Jacqueline (Cote) Chabot of Sanford; his mother in law, Diane St. Pierre of Wells; 2 brothers, Steve Chabot and his wife Barbara of Portland, Philip Chabot and his wife Terry of Sanford; a sister, Michelle Frasier of Sanford, his cousin who was more like another brother, John Heath of Portsmouth, NH and many nieces and nephews. WELLS At Wells Elementary School on May 26, there was a special gathering of first grade students with a class of WHS seniors. They were there to celebrate the culmination of another productive year for Teen Trendsetters™, an intensive reading mentoring program of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Beginning October of 2016, nineteen WHS seniors from Dawn Wentland’s World Literature class traveled on Fridays to the elementary school to help a group of younger students boost their reading skills, reading scores and confidence. During these 45-minute sessions, each senior was matched up with a first grade student for tutoring. According to the coordinator for Teen Trendsetters™ at WES, Literacy Specialist Bonnie Esty, about 60 students have benefited from this program since the fall of 2014. The Barbara Bush Foundation offers participating schools

in the program training for staff and teen volunteers, books, three non-fiction magazines from a Scholastic program called Brainstorm and ongoing monitoring of student reading data. Seniors who commit to volunteer are trained to mentor elementary students. They also practice leadership skills by working one-on-one with a reader. With completion of this experience they receive up to 24 school credit hours in community service. At the party on May 26, the group heard comments from Bonnier Esty (who also wrote the grant that brought this program to WES) and watched a send-off video of photos taken throughout the year of the two groups working together. Students gave seniors a personalized card, a photo and a book for grads titled, Curious You, On Your Way. For their participation, first graders received 15 books to enjoy at home and add See MENTORS page 36...

Eliot Elementary School’s “Eliot Stories

ELIOT After months of research, interviews with town elders, and field trips into the community, second grade students at Eliot Elementary School unveiled the mural they created entitled “Eliot Stories. Students worked with artists in residence Laurie Downey and Gretchen Berg from The Local Stories Project. In collaboration with classroom teachers and the Eliot Historical Society, students were challenged to become stewards of Eliot’s rich past. Each student kept a research journal that included sketches and written notes to document their historical dis-

coveries. These journals were later used to create the mural, and to develop a physical theatre performance that would allow the children to share what they had learned not only with their fellow students at Eliot Elementary School, but also with members of the greater Eliot community. On Monday, June 12, the mural was unveiled and students were delighted to share their physical theatre performance with families and many members of the community. This project was generously funded by grants received from Marshwood Education Foundation,

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Because Safe Haven has always been a No-Kill organization, several shy kitties who were once feral live at our shelter. They would have been euthanized at most mainstream shelters, as feral cats usually are. Knowing they’re safe at Safe Haven, these kitties have developed a calmness around humans but are still learning to feel confident around strangers. They often disappear into nooks when visitors come looking for a kitty to adopt. Because they’re wallflowers, they’re rarely noticed by potential adopters. Ariel is one of these shy kitties. She’s not only beautiful, but has spunk, speed, agility and a

little sass to go with it. She’s delightful, but really doesn’t like to share, so she’d be happiest as an only kitty. Come meet this darling grey-brown tiger or one of our other wonderful shy kitties. Summer’s here, and we’re landscaping at our adoption center. We’d love to have a few birdbaths, feeders and tall shepherd hooks donated to us. Also, our aging wheelbarrow is cracked in several places, so if you have an unused wheelbarrow you could donate we could sure use it. Thrift Shop is looking for beach items in good condition, quality housewares, better jewelry and large paper shopping bags, bubble wrap, and more volunteers!

Rossborough Receives Spirit of Community Award

KENNEBUNK Recently, Senator Susan Collins had the opportunity to meet two remarkable young people – Bella Rossborough of Kennebunk and Kathleen Waeldner of Yarmouth – when

they were in Washington to receive 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community awards, which recognize students for exemplary community service. From nearly 31,000 nominees nationwide, only two students

from each state and the District of Columbia are selected for this recognition, so it was a particular honor to meet these two young women from Maine. Bella is a 12-year-old sixth-grader at the Middle School of the Kennebunks. When she read about how plastic bags harm the environment and wildlife, she took action to reduce their use in her town. After writing to the town manager, Bella followed up by meeting with the Board of Selectmen. Then she began working with the Kennebunk Energy Efficiency Commit-

tee to explore ways to reduce the use of plastic bags. Joined by members of the committee, a friend, her mother, and a teacher, Bella distributed information and reusable bags at town events. She raised awareness of the issue in radio and newspaper interviews, personally visited local merchants to inform them of the benefits of reusable bags, and raised the issue with the town’s Council. Bella’s research, determination, and thoughtful approach truly made a difference. The commitment demonstrated by Rossborough benefits her community today and will for years to come as

Bella continues her efforts to improve the environment. She benefits, as well, from learning the self-reliance and sense of accomplishment that come from taking on responsibilities and meeting them.

Smith Recognized with International Award WELLS Betsy Smith, a resident of Kennebunk, was honored on June 7 by the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment with a 2017 Visionary Award. Smith, whose volunteer activities directly support the rivers, beaches, and coastal waters of the Gulf of Maine, was nominated by the

Wells Reserve at Laudholm. During a ceremony at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, the Gulf of Maine Council honored seven individuals and one organization with awards recognizing their outstanding innovation, creativity, and commitment to protecting natural resources

Flag Day at Atria KENNEBUNK In honor of patriotism Atria Kennebunk decided to stick with America for their Adventure Dining travel experience this month and celebrate Flag Day with resident Irene LeClerc’s signature Flag Cake. Irene has been making this recipe since her early 20’s and even made a version of it when she was working at Genes Bakery in Sanford Maine. She has

prepared so many she couldn’t give us the exact number. The cake can be made from scratch. Atria Kennebunk’s Director of Culinary Services, John Caron expressed much enthusiasm for helping yet another resident make a recipe come alive. Thank you to our veterans, Police and Fire Departments, past and present, for their sacrifice and protection of the nation and its flag.

within the Gulf of Maine. Smith, who was described in the nomination as “tough, hardworking, and humble, does water quality sampling for both Maine Healthy Beaches and the Mousam and Kennebunk Rivers Alliance, participates in the Southern Maine Volunteer Beach Profile Monitoring Program, samples phytoplankton for the Maine Department of Marine Resources, serves on the steering and program committees for The Beaches Conference, chairs Kennebunk’s Lower Village Committee, and is former chair of the town’s Conservation and Open Spaces Planning Commission. She also volunteers at the United Way of York County and is a member of the Kennebunk Comprehensive Plan Update Committee. At the Wells Reserve, Smith monitors trail conditions, greets guests at the Visitor Center, and has been a trustee and treasurer for the nonprofit Laudholm Trust. “The idea of retirement always terrified me, Smith said. “So when I moved to Kennebunk as a full-time resident in 2013 and found such a wealth of opportunities to learn new things, meet new people, and join community efforts to conserve and protect our very special natural environment, I jumped in with both feet. I’m very grateful for these opportunities. The Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment was established in 1989 by the governments of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts to foster cooperative actions within the gulf watershed. The council’s mission is to maintain and enhance environmental quality in the Gulf of Maine to allow for sustainable resource use by existing and future generations. The Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a National Estuarine Research Reserve and historic site encompassing 2,250 acres on the southern Maine coast. More than 25,000 people visit the Wells Reserve each year to walk miles of trails and learn about coastal systems.

This year Kennebunk High School Seniors for their senior project partnered with Kennebunkport Conservation Trust in borrowing a camera from google street view to create even better access for ...MENTORS from page 26 to their family library. “It was productive,” said senior Joshua McFarland who participated this year. “It was a good experience for the kids and the seniors. I would definitely do it again.” McFarland noted that the younger students learned new words and gained knowledge about such topics as animals and plants from reading with a mentor. The end of the first year for the Teen Trendsetters™ program at WES in 2015 was especially notable as participating students and their mentors were invited to attend Barbara Bush’s 90th birthday party and celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Barbara Bush Foundation held at St. Ann’s Church in Kennebunkport near the Bush home in June of 2015. At that time, these WOCSD students greeted guests to the party, made posters and received t-shirts.

Essentially people from around the world will be able to virtually walk our trails, see the view from the top of the lighthouse, and more, once uploaded to google earth. These high school seniors are not aiming for the world; the people they are hoping to connect with are closer to home. The Kennebunkport Conservation Trusts education director Leia Lowery, has initiated a bringing nature home project with the Atria residents, bringing slide shows of trails and nature inside to bring greater access to senior citizens. The KHS seniors have recorded these trails to further the access to properties in a more experiential way for the residents who may find it difficult to make it out to the far reaches of KCT properties. WOCSD Celebration of Service WELLS The end of the 2016-2017 school year in the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District (WOCSD) finds 12 staff members retiring and six other staff reaching the 20 year milestone of service to the District. All of these individuals were honored in a “Service to Education Celebration” event at Wells High School on June 15. Following a reception for these colleagues, WOCSD Superintendent Jim Daly and the District’s three school princi...RESPOND from page 28 Griffin stated, “a positive, small thing to not only welcome them to our school, but to foster some positive interactions between students and them.” Griffin said that he and Assistant Principal A.J. Dufort had been considering ways to acknowledge and involve the community more at the school and so this gesture became a start towards that goal. Griffin said several police officers attended the first day and both fire and police personnel came for lunch the following day. “We enjoy having them here, and enjoy seeing the valuable positive relationships they are forming with our students,” said Griffin.

pals Christopher Roche (WES), Robert Griffin (WJHS) and Eileen Sheehy (WHS) recognized these individuals with comments and gift bags. Those retiring include Cathy Abbott (22 years of service), Jay Audet (34 years), Sue Cayford (5 years), Beth Cilluffo (12 years), Sharon Crippen (12 years), Paula Edmonds (2 years), Lil Lagasse (24 years), MaryEllen McEvoy (20 years), Alice Meader (40 years), Gerry Randall (18 years), Arlie VanNatta (13 years), and Bob Winn (34 years). Those recognized for reaching 20 years of service to the District included Martha Brown, Judi Dion, Marcy Dzamba, Marcia Millian, Cheryl Oakes and Clarissa Sweeney.

Retiring teacher Alice Meader was honored at the celebration, who began teaching at Wells Junior High School in 1977. She has taught under nine superintendents. (Reg Bennett photo)

~ Sports ~ As Sports Stadiums Age, Questions Surround Safety of Structures With his team leading 34-30 in the final minutes of a Wild Card Playoff game against the New Orleans Saints in 2011, Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch took a handoff and exploded through the hole, beginning what would turn out to be a 67-yard touchdown run. Odds are as Lynch was sealing the victory for the Seahawks against the defending Super Bowl Champions, nobody in the stands was worried about the structural soundness of CenturyLink Field. Sitting a few thousand miles away on a tiny island at North Tonawanda, NY, just outside of Niagara Falls, Douglas P. Taylor, CEO of Taylor Devices, no doubt looked at Lynch’s run through a different lens than most Seahawks fans that day. Taylor’s daily job involves controlling and stopping the movement of masses. No, he’s not a linebacker, he’s an engineer, and his company manufactures seismic dampers that protect structures during such events as earthquakes and high winds. As Lynch rumbled down the sideline for the game-winning touchdown, something else was rumbling in Seattle that day.

Lynch’s run led to such a frenzy in the stands that jumping fans caused a 1.0 earthquake to register at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. Lynch helped set off seismic alarms again in 2014 on touchdown run, and football fans of another sort on the other side of the pond got into the act earlier this year, causing what amounted to a 1.0 Earthquake in Spain in celebration of an FC Barcelona win. Taylor’s firm wasn’t involved in the construction of either facility in Seattle or Barcelona, but it was heavily involved with BC Place, a new stadium in Vancouver, and Safeco Field, the retractable roof stadium that serves as the home of the Seattle Mariners. “Those who are going to sporting events should be made aware that technology already exists to protect a structure and its occupants during wind and seismic events, Taylor says. “My hope is that a fan’s biggest worry is the score of the game and not whether the stands around him are going to collapse. Of Major League Baseball’s 30 stadiums, 18 were built in 1995 or later, with five of those opening in the past decade.

When play opens on the 2017 NFL season, 10 of its stadiums will have opened their doors in 1994 or earlier, with the remaining 21 opening in 1995 or later. “Any stadium in a high seismic zone that was designed before 1995 probably does not meet the updated seismic codes, Taylor says. “For stadiums subject only to high winds, older designs may well meet the current codes. However, these codes usually only provide a structure that won't totally collapse. While certain weather and nature-related phenomena such as hurricanes and snow storms can be identified by meteorologists well in advance to postpone games, there is no early-warning system for an earthquake. Several professional stadiums – not to mention a large number of college football stadiums – are near fault lines in California and in the Midwest. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is a seven to 10 percent chance an earthquake magnitude 6.0 or higher will strike in the next 50 years along the New Madrid Fault Line in the Midwest. California on the other hand – the current home of five MLB teams and four NFL teams – is staring down the barrel of a gun ready to fire off a 7.0 magnitude earthquake or higher at any time.

Noble Baseball Team Receives Award

NORTH BERWICK The Noble baseball season was a success! A record of 5-11 almost doubled their win total last season. (3 last year); winless 2 seasons ago. The team was recognized before the class A

championship game in Augusta on June 17 for the Good Sportsmanship award. Pictured receiving it left to right: Jake Lacroix, Duncan Mcgilveray, Dalton Meagher, Ian Dudley. Not pictured coach Adam Hale.

“The northern part of the state is long overdue for a powerful earthquake (7.0 or higher) along the San Andreas fault, Taylor says. “San Diego and Los Angeles aren’t safe either. A new fault line was discovered in the Southern part of the state earlier this year that could cause an earthquake as powerful as 7.4 on the Richter Scale. Douglas P. Taylor is the

CEO of Taylor Devices (www. taylordevices.com), which manufactures seismic dampers that protect structures during such events as earthquakes and high winds. He is inventor or co-inventor of 34 patents in the fields of energy management, hydraulics and shock isolation. In 2015, he was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame by NASA and the Space Foundation.
