Downpours Don’t Dampen Spirits at George H.W. Bush Celebrity Golf Tournament

Sally Henry of the Maine Diner with Boston Red Sox pitching great Luis Tiant before teeing off at the 13th Annual George H.W. Bush Celebrity Golf Tournament on Tuesday at Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport.

By Nancye Tuttle Contributing Writer KENNEBUNKPORT – Over 130 golfers didn’t let Tuesday morning’s torrential rains ruin their day or interfere with the 13th Annual George H.W. Bush Celebrity Golf Tournament at Cape Arundel Golf Club. Participants, including sports celebrities, New England golf pros, officers from the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier and die-hard golfers, gathered early at the club under dark skies to golf and bring to a close three days of fundraising for Gary’s House in Portland. Other events

included a Sunday cocktail party and Monday’s dinner and auction, attended by over 300 at the Colony Hotel. Rain is expected each year, said event organizer Lana Wescott of Kennebunkport. “This tournament is known for getting rained on, so we tell people to bring rain gear, she said. Heeding the advice, folks donned cover-ups, put up umbrellas and ducked into the hospitality tent to drink coffee and share stories until the rain delay was lifted. As it turned out, however, the event was cancelled due to the stormy, inclement weath-

er. Nonetheless, they were there to honor Gary Pike, a man from Kennebunk for whom Gary’s House is named. Just 18 at the time he was diagnosed with cancer in 1989, he wondered why, during his battle, there were no nice, affordable places for his family to stay when he traveled to Portland or Boston. Before he passed away in 1991, he let his family know of his dream — to create an affordable home-away-from-home for families with hospitalized loved ones. In 1998, Gary’s House See GOLF page 6...

~ News ~ Successful Fundraising at The Cliff House OGUNQUIT In May The Cliff House in Ogunquit hosted ‘Uncorked’, an annual fundraising event. Uncorked is a fine wine and food festival that attracts a considerable amount of attendees. This event was hosted this year by York Hospital and Family Ears, Nose & Throat, LLC and raised over $25,000 for the York Schools. The York Education Foundation would like to thank the community at large for their continued support in making this 11th year annual fundraiser huge success. Featured in the photo to the right are a few of the members of The York Education Foundation: left to right, Leslie Rankin, Janet Ford, Linda Brenske, and Brenda Gamache. ...TEACHER from page 2 day. This has all been a wonderful bonus on top of what I expected going into (the teaching profession).” McComb said he traveled the United States including Alaska and went on two international trips making 100 presentations during his reign as Teacher of the Year from June 1, 2014 to June 1, 2015. In an April 2014 CBS news story, McComb admitted he was not “the world’s best student” due in part to a sometime chaotic home life brought on by periods of parental unemployment and his mother’s alcoholism. However, McComb credits two inspiring teachers who shined a light on his situation and made him realize that he needed to hold himself to a high standard. In the article, McComb said his philosophy of teaching is “kids before content and love before all”. In early May of 2014, McComb and runners up to Teacher of the Year were honored by President Obama at the White House. (source: cbsnews.com, April 30, 2014)

Camp Invention Fostering Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills at Coastal Ridge Elementary

YORK – Camp Invention, a national summer enrichment day camp program that is supported by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF), is coming to Coastal Ridge Elementary the week of June 29. The week-long day camp for students entering grades 1-6 fosters innovation and creativity while also building self-esteem, teamwork, persistence and goalsetting skills.

Selection of the right summer camp for children can be intimidating and overwhelming as the options continue to grow and become more niche. Camp Invention not only encourages inventive young minds through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in a fun and creative atmosphere, it also incorporates outdoor activities as part of its curriculum. Camp Invention students experience winning, success and victory, along with an adrenaline

rush that comes with competition among students and successful completion of challenging projects. It provides a great opportunity for inventive young minds to exercise their creativity through real-world problem-solving challenges, they build things, take things apart, explore different types of technology and so much more. Many times, the students are having so much fun, they don’t even realize they are learning and developing new skills. "We are thrilled to be offering Camp Invention to students in our community and developing skills that ensure bright futures for our participants," said Nancy Lenihan, Camp Invention Director in Sumner, Washington

and Highly Capable Classroom Teacher. "We are molding inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs and instilling creative problem-solving, which sets this camp apart from the rest." This year’s Camp Invention curriculum is called Illuminate™ and was inspired by some of our nation’s most brilliant minds including experienced educators, Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and members of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Illuminate™ will encourage children to explore their inventiveness in the Design Studio: Illuminate module, investigating circuits and taking on a nature-inspired design challenge. Route One Project News OGUNQUIT The DOT has advised that the Route 1 Project is now on Summer Break. Construction work will continue on both Phillips and Donnells bridges. The bridge construction is expected to have minimal impact on traffic through town. In the coming days, an off-road drainage outfall repair will be taking place near Post Road Tavern. This repair work is expected to have minimal impact on traffic. The overhead utilities companies will continue their projects to relocate poles and lines along Route 1 with the potential for lane closures. Construction is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, September 8.

The Landing School Graduates 73 Students

ARUNDEL On June 20, The Landing School will celebrate its 36th annual commencement, graduating 73 diploma and eight associate degree students. Graduates in the Marine Systems, Yacht Design, Composite Boat Building and Wooden Boat Building programs will hear from speaker Rives Potts, President of Brewer Yacht Yards. Graduates from this year’s class hail from five countries and 15 states. 17 diploma recipients will be returning to The Landing School in the fall to complete their Associate’s Degree in Marine Industry Technology. Several Yacht Design students will carry on their studies, work-

ternational sailing star. A Richmond, Virginia native, Potts first got hooked on sailing at Fishing Bay where the waters of the Piankatank River meet the Chesapeake Bay in Deltaville. The passion he developed for open water sailing has led Potts to success in the world’s most prestigious races, including 5 America’s Cup campaigns, multiple regattas in the US on both coasts, and most of the world’s biggest long-distance ocean races including the 635-mile Newport Bermuda Race (23 times) and the venerable Rolex Fastnet Race and the Sydney – Hobart Race. In 2010 he was named Yachtsman of the Year by the New York Yacht Club and last year was elected Commodore of the 168-year-old club. Today, Potts is a boat builder and President of Brewer Yacht Yard Group. Mostly sailing with his close friends and

ing towards a Bachelor of Engineering in Yacht Design and Production (Hons.) through a partnership with Southampton Solent University in the United Kingdom. Other graduates are headed towards positions at Brewer Yacht Yards (ME) and crewing the historic schooner Eleanor (ME), to name a few. This year’s keynote speaker, Rives Potts, is experienced in every dimension of boating, which makes him an ideal selection to speak to The Landing School graduates about the path they have chosen and the future they have to look forward to. An engineering graduate from the Virginia Military Institute with an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School, Potts serves on the Board of Trustees of The Landing School and is Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. Carina’s trip was skippered by Potts’ son Walker, 26, and nephew, Rives Sutherland, 26, who with his other son, Allen, have been sailing on Carina since they were small children. Potts will be leaving with his crew aboard Carina next week on the Transatlantic Race from Newport, RI to

Cowes, England. In addition to the commencement festivities, students, families and the community will enjoy a launch party on June 19 at Chicks Marina in Kennebunkport, Maine. The Wooden Boat Building program students will christen and launch four LS-17 Sports Utility Runabouts while Composite Boat Building students will christen and launch eight composite kayaks. The event is free and open to the public and will feature community exhibits, raffles and refreshments in addition to the boat christening and launching. More information about this event can be found at www.landingschool.edu.

...GOLF from page 1 opened its doors as an affiliate of Mercy Hospital. Families stay here for $15 a night, thanks to funds raised at events like the tournament. In 2002, President George H.W. Bush gave his name to the golf tournament to support Gary’s House. This year, former first lady Barbara Bush was honorary chairman of the events. “A volunteer asked him to get involved, and he agreed to give his name to the tournament and has played in it. The Bushes are very generous, said Wescott. So, too, are 40 volunteers who help with the events, including the tournament. “A lot have been with us from day one, setting up signs and tables, gathering auction items, labeling golf bags, helping any way they can, said Wescott. Radio host Michael Patrick Shiels arrives each year from Michigan to emcee and broadcast his show live from Cape Arundel clubhouse porch. “I worked for the PGA tour and was President Bush’s advance man for his two campaigns. I love it and enjoy spreading word about Maine, he said. During the rain delay, Shiel interviewed celebrities in the

crowd, including Boston Celtics assistant head coach and former player Walter McCarty, and officers of the USS George H.W. Bush — Capt. Andrew “Bucket Loiselle, Rear Admiral Chip Miller and Airwing Commander Dan Martin. Ken Raynor, Cape Arundel’s head pro, shared stories and reviewed tournament rules. The rain stopped and golfers got in their carts, making ready for the start. Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame pitcher Luis Tiant autographed a golf ball for Sally Henry, volunteer on the Maine Diner team. “I love volunteering for a good cause and serving our seafood chowder in the lunch tents, she said. As play started, Gary’s House executive director Debra Lavoie marveled at the event. “It’s a blast, and we love seeing return golfers each year, some from as far as Colorado and Texas, she said. And, she added, Gary’s House relies on such events to fund its mission. “We’re almost totally funded by donor support, so we need and appreciate these events, she said.

~ News ~ Historic New England Presents Garden Concerts in South Berwick SOUTH BERWICK – Historic New England is pleased to announce this year’s lineup for the popular Sundays in the Garden Concert Series. Concerts are held every Sunday in July at 5 p.m. in the garden of the historic Hamilton House in South Berwick. The beautiful gardens and sweeping view of the Salmon Falls River provide a picture perfect setting for these relaxing concerts. Harvey Reid kicks off the series on July 5, with his 24th annual appearance at Hamil-

He will play guitar, slide guitar, 6-string banjo and autoharp, and present one of his usual unusual assortment of original and traditional songs and instrumentals, featuring material from his 32 albums of music. On July 12, local band ‘La Madeleine’ performs the songs of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Georges Moustaki, Gilles Vigneault and a variety of other French and French Canadian artists, along with a mix of accordion and fiddle-driven celtic instrumentals. Hackmatack Playhouse’s first offering of its 44th season. Back in the golden era of straw-hat theater, a season’s programming typically comprised a mixture of musicals and light comedies. Nowadays in Maine, most summer theater companies have morphed into strictly musical mode, producing four or five tuners each summer. And while I’m a passionate fan of musical theater, I also love traditional light comedy. So it’s refreshing to note that Hackmatack Playhouse, which represents the epitome of strawhat theater, retains the time-tested mixed format.

“Unnecessary Farce was penned by Paul Slade Smith and debuted in 2006. It is rapidly becoming a staple of professional and community companies in this country. The play is a modern take on the classic farce formula, which involves zany characters, several beds and many doors. On opening night of its 2015 season, Hackmatack’s audience convulsed with laughter for this splendid modern exemplar of the ancient art of farce. Here’s the basic scheme: In a cheap motel room, a city’s embezzling mayor is scheduled to meet with his

Free Tickets for Cops‌ and that’s no Farce! Police officers may be tired of jokes about all the free donuts they eat. But now, as a kind of apology for teasing these public servants in their show, Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick is giving free tickets to any cop who wants to see the theater’s first show of the season, “Unnecessary Farceâ€?. “The donut-eating cops in this show have a hard time getting things right, but then so do the crooks,â€? said Michael Guptill, owner of Hackmatack Theater. “Letting local cops in for free is our little way of thanking them for their service, as we poke a little fun at them on the stage.â€?

female accountant. In an adjoining room, two undercover police officers have been assigned to record the meeting on videotape and nab the crooked politician. But the police are hopelessly incompetent. One is a rookie who barely stumbled through police academy, while the other harbors a secret crush on the accountant. In a nod to more modern traditions of farce -- most notably the character of Inspector Jacques Clouseau of the Blake Edwards-Peter Sellers “Pink Panther film series -- the trail of corruption takes some unexpected twists, and despite their obvious incompetence, the two bumbling police officers still solve the case. Director Jennifer Henry has assembled a fine cast. Danica Carlson plays a weakminded rookie cop. Her stupidity and incompetence made her stand out from the crowd at the police academy, and now she proudly struts her stuff on her first big assignment.

Kelly Grete Ehlert plays the necessary sex object -- a staple character in farces -- with great relish. She’s a 35-year-old man-starved woman who seems to undress at all the inappropriate moments. Tomer Oz skillfully navigates the role of the second cop -- and also the accountant’s secret love interest -- while Mike Coppinger is the mayor, Michael Stailey serves as his bodyguard, and Tinka Darling shines as his wife. The top comic role goes to Michael Towle, brilliantly playing a huge, hulking Scotsman who is a professional hit man who has been hired to knock off somebody. But nobody seems sure who will become his victim. This fearsome kilt-clad killer speaks in an almost incomprehensible accent (per the playwright’s intent) and is the focus of much of the action. Kudos are also earned by Jerard-James Craven, whose scenic design captures the seedy spirit of the proverbial “no-tell motel.

Happy and healthy, this lovely black-and-white shorthair with bright yellow eyes is only 3-4 years old. Call Leonore at 985-3227 or Lisa at 281-3978. New kitties are arriving at our center from everywhere, it seems. Choco just arrived with his big tomcat cheeks, small sore eyes and drool on his lips. He didn’t move much, and when he did, he padded over to the corner and sat facing the wall, staring at nothing. “Is he blind?” we wondered. But he followed my fingers

with his eyes, so surely he can see. So why is he sitting in the corner? The drool, we figured, was caused by his rotting teeth and infected gums. We figured that out easily. Every time he yawned we stared into his mouth. “Oh dear, he needs a dental badly!” Choco acted like a kitty in pain: withdrawn, depressed, lifeless. We scheduled an emergency vet visit, which revealed an eye condition called bilateral inferior entropia. This condition, which is usually genetic, causes the eyelid to grow inward, so the cat’s eyelashes rub against the cornea. Ouch! As you can imagine, this condition is very painful and causes a kitty to withdraw. This fellow needs surgery, and

national competition in twelve out of the past sixteen years, a record that is unmatched in the country. In 2014, four Maine credit unions received national awards. Professionals from the Maine Public Relations Council judged the awards, which honor Credit Unions for community and/or member service efforts during the past year, a year that again saw the Maine Credit Union Movement accomplish significant achievements in community-service activities and special initiatives for members. The judges praised the efforts of Maine’s credit unions “for doing the small things that matter, often without seeking fanfare or notice. It’s great to see credit unions reaching out to make a difference and, even better, they are accomplishing that. During the past year, Maine Credit Unions demonstrated an everyday commitment to their communities and the people who live there. Accomplishments include: raising nearly $1.6 million for various causes, such as a record-setting $552,000 for the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, $75,000 for Maine Special Olympics, $45,000 for the Children's Miracle Network, $95,000 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program, and many more. In addition, Maine credit unions volunteered more than 38,000 hours for community organizations and activities across Maine. As a result of this tireless commitment and dedication to the credit union philosophy of 'people helping people', Maine is one of the nation's strongest credit union movements in community-service, member education and financial education involvement. Maine's credit unions also provided significant initiatives to members that highlight the credit union difference, such as special low or no interest loans for fuel assistance, distributing books to school libraries, programs for financial education and other programs to help members in difficult times. The 2015 recipients of the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, established to encourage Credit Union involvement in community projects and activities, awarded the PeoplesChoice Credit Union with First Place honors. Tips for Newlyweds About to Merge Finances Newlyweds often have a lot on their plates upon returning from their honeymoons. One of the more critical issues newly married couples must address is their finances and how those finances will be combined going forward. Combining finances can be a touchy subject for many couples, especially those who had not given much thought to their finances prior to tying the knot. But there are steps couples can take to make the process of merging finances go more smoothly. Discuss finances early and often. Allowing finances to be the elephant in the room is a mistake, as couples do not want to begin their lives together treading lightly around an issue as significant as finances. Couples should discuss their expenditures and spending habits as early as possible, as one of the biggest hurdles newly married couples must clear is coming to grips with one another's financial habits. If such habits have already been discussed, then developing a financial plan will be much easier once that time comes. When discussing finances, define both short-term and long-term goals and how each of you can adjust your spending habits to make those goals come true. Pay off any debts. The cost of weddings has skyrocketed over the last several decades, and many newlyweds find themselves

in a considerable amount of debt upon returning from their honeymoons. When merging finances, couples should prioritize paying down such debt, as debt is a significant source of stress for newlyweds and long-married couples alike. Newly married couples with little or no debt should avoid spending above their means in the months after they get married. Such spending is commonplace, as newly married couples often want to fully furnish their new homes or reward themselves for pulling off their weddings. But new debt can be just as stressful on a marriage as debt from the wedding, so avoid this potentially problematic pitfall by paying down existing debts with your newly merged finances.

When merging finances, couples often discover that they don't see eye-to-eye on how each person spends money. Couples who successfully merge their finances often note the importance of making concessions with regard to their partners' spending on certain hobbies or luxuries. As long as those hobbies are not putting couples in debt or jeopardizing their financial goals, couples can make concessions so their partners continue to be happy and enjoy their favorite activities. Merging finances is an issue that looms for many new-

Make note of mutual expenses and open a joint account to pay for those expenses. Mutual expenses like mortgage payments, food and utilities should be the responsibility of each partner, and a joint account should be established to handle such expenses. When opening a joint account, discuss how much and how often each partner will contribute money. One partner might earn considerably more money than another, so work out a reasonable agreement that details how much each partner will contribute each month, and whether such contributions will be made on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

Food Safety Modernization Act STATEWIDE – Officials at the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry (DACF) have announced that a new Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) information webpage has been created for farmers and food producers seeking information on significant federal changes to food safety regulations. "Although the US Congress passed sweeping federal law changes 4 years ago, the rules that actually impact farmers are still being developed in Washington, DC," said Commissioner Walt Whitcomb. “This dedicated page on the DACF website provides food producers access to the most recent proposals as they are promulgated. FSMA is designed to prevent food borne

illness by focusing on preventative controls and we want that information available as fast as possible. Because of the impact these federal changes will have on farmers and food businesses, we are taking steps to help ensure everyone has the latest information. The new FSMA page created by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry will provide up-to-date information as changes occur and focus on how these changes will affect farmers and businesses. Users may utilize a tool on the site to assess any potential FSMA impact on their farm or food business. They can also sign up for email alerts as new information is released. Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) The Federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), signed into law in 2011, is the first significant overhaul of food safety regulations since the 1930s and was designed to prevent food borne illness. FSMA will be implemented by the U.S. Food and

Drug Administration (FDA) and relevant state agencies. In December 2014, FDA concluded the second of two comment periods on draft rules it has written to implement the law. There are seven FSMA rules covering everything from human food to pet food to imports to transportation. Will FSMA Affect You? The webpage has a useful flowchart, developed by the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, that helps farms and food businesses figure which rules apply to them and how. The FSMA Reproposal During the first public comment period in 2013, tens of thousands of farmers and others expressed many concerns about the produce rule impacting farms and the preventive controls rule impacting facilities that manufacture, process, pack and hold food. FDA agreed to revise specific parts of the rules to offer alternatives for provisions that raised the most concern. Maine DACF Commis-

sioner Walt Whitcomb and the Department hosted a listening session with FDA officials from Washington D.C. and took them to see real Maine farms during August 2013. These sessions and farm visits provided significant input to FDA's draft rules. Get Relief from Sunburn Sunburn is something nearly everyone will experience at least once in their lifetimes. Though men, women and children should look to prevent sunburn entirely, sometimes sunburns occur, making those exposed to too much sun uncomfortable and possibly even dealing with considerable pain. Sunburn is marked by red, sensitive skin that can be hot to the touch. Inflammation and blistering may occur. The Skin Cancer Foundation says that while sunburn may seem like a temporary irritation, it can cause long-lasting damage to the skin. Treating sunburn may require several different approaches. • Get out of the sun the moment you first feel irritation. Your skin may not be red, but irritation may be the first indication that you are being burned

by the sun. • Take cool baths or showers to relieve the pain and heat in the skin. Cool, damp towels also can do the trick. • Use a moisturizing lotion with aloe vera. Avoid moisturizers with petroleum, as they will lock in heat. • The American Academy of Dermatology notes that sunburn may lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water to keep your body well hydrated. • Blisters may occur if sunburn is particularly bad. Do not succumb to the temptation of popping the blisters, as doing so may result in an infection. • Take a dose of ibuprofen to reduce swelling and counteract the pain. Ibuprofen also may help prevent some longterm damage. • If a blistering burn covers more than 20 percent of the body, seek medical attention. In addition, visit your physician if a sunburn is accompanied by fever and chills. • Keep sunburn covered up with tightly woven clothing to aid in healing. Sunburn can be painful and increase your risk for skin cancer, so prevention and treatment should be taken seriously. This article was provided by MetroCreative. “SIS Home Runs for Good Raises Funds for VA Cemetery Association

SANFORD SIS Bank is proud to have donated $650 to the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery Association (SMVCA) as a result of the Bank’s “SIS Home Runs for Good campaign. The promotion, a collaboration between SIS and WBLM-FM of Portland, gives $50 to a local non-profit organization for every home run a member of the Boston

Red Sox hits at home throughout the month. Each month, a different area charity will benefit. For May, the VA Cemetery Association in Springvale is the beneficiary of the money earned from the Sox’s 13 home runs. The SMVCA is a group of volunteers who maintains and beautifies the cemetery grounds, honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. “SIS Bank is thrilled we could contribute to the Southern

Maine Veterans Cemetery Association, said SIS Bank President & CEO Mark T. Mickeriz. “The SMVCA was a worthy choice to receive our support for the month of May, not only because of the timing of Memorial Day, but also because it is a praiseworthy organization working to make our community stronger and more beautiful each and every day. For details, visit www. maine.gov and https://banksis. us/2015-homeruns-for-good.

Members of the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery Association were presented a check from Dee Richard of SIS Bank (center).

Wendy Lynne Klodt, 68 CAPE NEDDICK – Wendy Lynne Klodt, 68, of Cape Neddick, died in hospice in Naples, Florida, on June 13, 2015, after giving the cancer god a hard run for the money. She was born in San Bernardino, California, on October 3, 1946, to Beth (Bowen) and Gordon R. Klodt. She spent her childhood in Southern California and always considered herself a Western girl. After moving to Abington, Pennsylvania, during high school, Wendy attended

Antioch College (much to her father's chagrin) and following graduation set out for a career in musical theater. But the Silk Road beckoned, and Wendy spent most of the ‘70s commuting to Afghanistan, manufacturing hippie frocks in Kabul to sell in the East Village (and later to Bloomingdales). Her only respite from this grueling work was a year as a guest of the shah in the women's prison at Mashhad, Iran, after being ratted out crossing the border from Herat while "doing a favor for a friend." She spent the year knitting and learning Farsi, and was released in December 1974, possibly with the help of Kissinger and CIA direc T U #; 6*' #%4'& '#46 1( '575 $' #&14'&X ).14+(+'&X .18'& #0& 24'5'48'& 6*417)*176 6*' 914.& 019 #0& (14'8'4T #%4'& '#46 1( '575X 24#; (14 75T 6T 7&'X 914-'4 1( /+4#%.'5X 24#; (14 75T 6T 7&'X *'.2'4 1( 6*' *12'.'55X 24#; (14 75T #; 6*+5 24#;'4 M 6+/'5 # &#;X $; 6*' L6* &#; ;174 24#;'45 9+.. $' #059'4'&T 6 *#5 0'8'4 $''0 -0190 61 (#+.T 7$.+%#6+10 /756 $' 241/+5'& #0& &10'T

tor Richard Helms on behalf of her father Gordon, by then president of Merck Canada. Wendy moved to Maine in the late 70s, after catching a ride to Cape Neddick during a solo hitchhiking trip to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and SaintPierre-et-Miquelon. Thus began the Fair Skies chapter, first a succession of ephemeral shops selling eclectic women's clothing in Kennebunkport and Ogunquit, then Wendy's own building in Perkins Cove in 1978, followed by a second building in Portsmouth in 1983, and for 14 years a third store on Main Street in Oqunquit. Textiles were her passion and her livelihood, the inspiration for travel and collecting and the source of the means to make that possible. Seventy hours a week in season and not much less off season meant very little spare time, but singing with the Portsmouth Women's Chorus and the a cappella group King's Revels kept alive her love of singing and performing that stretched back to high school drama club. A high point was singing with the Surry (Maine) Opera Company in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1995. In 1994 Wendy met David Meikle, who for 20 years did his best to convince her that the boss doesn't have to be in every store

every day, especially in February. The result was an unconventional relationship, and a lot of midwinter travel; a ten-belowzero day at an outdoor livestock fair in rural Romania made for many trips to Spain and Portugal in the years that followed. Three trips to Japan focused an appreciation for ceramics and woodblock prints that brought serenity during her final months. In 1999 Wendy bought two acres of woods along the cove of the Cape Neddick River, where she could worship the trees and rocks and try to keep the deer from eating the hosta. The beauty of the earth and its creatures (including most people) was the source of Wendy's deep well of strength. Wendy is survived by her life partner, David Meikle; his daughter Mollie of Brooklyn and Staatsburg, New York; cousins in Idaho, Arizona, Utah, and Ohio; and numerous friends around the Seacoast and the world. A memorial gathering will take place August 1, from 2 to 5 p.m., at The Dance Hall, 7 Walker Street, Kittery. Contributions in Wendy's memory can be made to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whipporwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105 (https://avowcares.org/ donate).

closely with owners Legacy Partners of Wakefield, MA, in the design of this new development that establishes an “aging in placeâ€? model for communities catering to residents over the age of 55. Pappas said that the concept of Sea Landing is unique to the region, and one that he believes may well become the new norm in housing for the over 55 market. The system will have a base plan where a resident pays a monthly fee for services which include maintenance, community garden, emergency response security system, activities, RN on-site, personal trainer, fitness programs, Vital Mind™ online “brain fitnessâ€? program, and Med Rite™ medication reconciliation program. Additional and expanded services include yoga, massage, RN house calls, companionship, medication assistance, physician visits, rehabilitation,

diet and nutrition services, and more. “With this ability to add services if and as needed, an individual can plan so that he or she can choose a retirement home and remain there rather than needing to uproot and change, said Pappas, adding, “We’ve had a great deal of interest in this concept and we anticipate that these individual properties will be in great demand. In fact, there are plans for two similar developments in the region over the next year or two. Groundbreaking for the new facility is scheduled to take place in June. Pappas estimates that the individual properties will be ready for occupancy by December 2015. Pre-sale prices range from $349,900 to $379,900. For additional information on Sea Landing, call 207-475-8179 or email arthurjpappas@kw.com.

People and Business Profiles Fisherman’s Dock Has Moved By Nancye Tuttle Contributing Writer YORK – Randy Small and Kent Kilgore know a thing or two about serving the freshest lobsters, clams and fish to customers. Small owns Skipper’s Bay Lobster Meat and Bay Harbor Lobster, two local lobster businesses. Kilgore has owned or leased several York seafood restaurants, including Foster’s Clambake, over the past decade. The likeable duo, life-long York residents and longtime friends, joined forces two years ago to open Fisherman’s Dock on well-traveled Route 1. The small takeout spot, with its adjoining fish market, was an immediate hit, drawing crowds clamoring for fried clams and haddock, lobster dinners and overstuffed lobster rolls. They knew they’d struck gold on this busy stretch of roadway and wanted to expand. That happened this spring when they purchased and reno-

vated a larger building, also on Rt. 1, but closer to the York exit off the Maine Turnpike. And since their opening on Memorial Day weekend, they’ve become a go-to place for seafood fans, hungry for great tastes of Maine. On-line reviews are praiseworthy. “A quintessential Maine roadside seafood market and restaurant, cheers one. “Wow! Our new go-to in York, lauds another. During a May interview, as workmen rushed to complete renovations, Small sat on the then-unfinished patio and talked about his and Kilgore’s new venture. “We’ll have better seating, more parking and an outdoor deck. We’ll be able to accommodate 90, indoors and out, and have a 12-seat full service bar. We plan on being open yearround, too, he said. The new Fishermen’s Dock is decorated in dark mahogany and stained wood and features nautical accents. Umbrella tables and potted flowers sprout

on the patio. Inside, the bar boasts inlaid fused-glass fish, crafted by a local artist. But dĂŠcor means nothing if the food doesn’t measure up. And Chef Charlie Caramihalis, has designed a tasty menu filled with lobster, fried seafood and fish, plus a kids menu with burgers, chicken and grilled cheese. “That dude can cook anything,â€? said Kilgore. For starters, try steamed clams or mussels, shrimp cocktail, clam and fish chowder or lobster stew. Besides lobster rolls, you’ll find crabmeat, fried whole clam and clam strips, scallops and cranberry chutney chicken salad rolls. Bulkie sandwiches feature 1/2 –pound char-grilled burgers, chicken and swordfish and fried or broiled haddock. The fried dinner choices range from whole clam, clam strips, haddock, scallops and shrimp to clam cakes, oysters and chicken fingers. Hefty eaters will love the fisherman’s platter — whole clams, haddock, shrimp, scallops and clam strips. Smaller portion fried seafood baskets and garden and Caesar salads with grilled chick-

Just opened, re-located Fishermen’s Dock on Rte. 1 in York continues to be a favorite dining spot.

en or salmon, shrimp, chicken salad or lobster meat will appeal to lighter eaters. Other dinner options include broiled haddock or scallops, with crumb toppings, and chicken teriyaki. Boiled lobster dinners, in several sizes, come with corn, coleslaw, roll and drawn butter. The lobster feast includes lobster, plus clam chowder, steamers and mussels and blueberry cobbler with ice cream. The “Dock has a takeout window and fish market on-site. Breakfast is available

on weekends. It’s a dream come true for Small and Kilgore, who credit their neighbors with helping them succeed. “The town of York has been good to us, said Small. And if early reaction is any sign, it looks like the new Fishermen’s Dock is set to become a favorite of York folks and hungry tourists passing through. Fishermen’s Dock is now located at 674 Route 1 in. York. For more information, call 207351-8100 or visit www.fishermensdock.com.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I am having problems with my MSN email (through Hotmail) and would like to eliminate it. Following your advice in your newsletter I have been using gmail as my primary now for two years, but still would like to have a secondary email. Actually some people require a back-up one. Which is safe and almost as free of spam as gmail? Thank you! Mili Dear Mili, I don’t know of any email server that filters out the spam as well as gmail, in fact, that is the biggest reason that I switched over to gmail. You might try the email address available to

you through your Internet Service Provider. An email address is usually included with your Internet access, and you would have better tech support in case something goes wrong with the email. Another option would be to use a cell phone number as a backup for gmail. When using a cell phone as a backup option, gmail would send a text message to your cell phone, and the code in the text message would allow you to reset your gmail password. Maybe someone else will have some suggestions for a free secondary email for you, when they read this article. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

The Computer Lady Can Help You Keep Your Computer Secure In 2015! Available Services include:

I have a question. I got a new computer with Windows 7 and changed my email to gmail. I had eliminated the inbound message when I replied and was able to erase the list of names on a Forwarding on my old system, but I cannot discover how to do that with gmail. Can you help me? Thank you so much. Lou

Thank you, and God bless you. Joseph

Dear Lou, I think one answer will be able to help you with both issues. Just hit the “Forward or “Reply button before you try to delete the original message or the list of forwarded names. Once you click on “Forward or “Reply, you will be able to highlight the list of recipients or the original message and then delete them. Elizabeth

Dear Joseph, If you have a CD with documents or photos on it, you can just insert the Disk, and drag the files to a folder on your hard drive. Once the files have been copied to your hard drive, put in a blank disk, and drag the files from your hard drive to the new disk. If you have a music CD or a bootable disk, you want to first make sure you have the legal permission to copy the disk. Then, I would use a third party software package like Roxio Creator or Nero. Both of those programs have a simple disk copy feature that will walk you through making a complete copy of your disk. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, Will you just tell me how to copy a CD? I have a new computer with Windows 8.1.

Dear Computer Lady, Is it OK to leave a DVD disk in the computer all the time or should it be removed? If not,

what could possibly happen! Thank you for such a wonderful, informing and easy to understand site! Audrey Dear Audrey, It is fine to leave a DVD disk in the drive. The only thing that you might notice is that the disk will spin every time you turn your computer on, and it might take a little longer for the computer to start up, since it will check the contents of the disk for bootable files. I quite often leave disks in the optical drive. Sometimes on purpose, but more often, I just forget it is there. Elizabeth Comments This Week: Posted By PC Man in response to “Good Secondary Email Comment; If you want backup just for the purpose to get your forgotten password, open another email account anywhere (like Yahoo) and don’t give out the address or use the account except to retrieve your password. If you just want another email address open a new one in Gmail. Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years.
