Travel Channel Visits New England’s Boon Island – Airing June 27 YORK – The Travel Channel visited the small rock off the coast of York to recreate the dark and mysterious events that occurred there in December 1710, which were chronicled in the awardwinning book, Boon Island: A True Story of Mutiny, Shipwreck, and Cannibalism, by local authors Andrew Vietze and Stephen Erickson. The wreck of the British merchant vessel Nottingham Galley on the tiny isle became an international sensation in the early eighteenth century and will be the focus of an episode of the popular show ‘Monumental Mysteries’ this season. Crew members endured the better part of a month on the rock in the winter without any provisions. Four men died, and the remaining ten, at their “last extremity,” as their captain put it, were forced to eat one of the bodies in order to survive. When they were eventually rescued, Captain John Deane told one
story; his crew told another, a much darker tale of mutiny, betrayal, and attempted murder. Where did the truth lie? Writers Andrew Vietze and Stephen Erickson turned this fascinating history into Boon Island: A True Story of Mutiny, Shipwreck, and Cannibalism. The book won a gold at the Independent Publishers Book Awards in New York, was a Book of the Year finalist (ForeWord), and recently rose

Publishers Weekly called it “as real as today’s news – a maritime whodunit rife with twists and turns and high drama.” The Portsmouth Herald found it “superb... both well-researched history and a page-turning mystery that begs to be a motion picture.” Several reviewers have mentioned the See BOON page 6...
walker after falling and breaking his arm earlier this year, she knew exactly who to turn to: Sally Morse. Morse operates a medical equipment loan closet, which Coggeshall knew would provide her with exactly the type of walker Harold needed. “Sally is wonderful,” said Coggeshall. “Whatever kinds of equipment you need, she has it. And if she doesn’t have it, she gets it.” This was not the first time the Coggeshalls, residents of Wells, had benefited from Morse’s services. When Mary Coggeshall fractured her arm a year ago, Morse promptly loaned her a wheelchair. “Anything you need,” Coggeshall reiterates, “She has it.” For the past 33 years, Morse has been aiding neighbors like the Coggeshalls with her medical equipment loan closet. She runs the “closet” out of her garage on Post Road in Wells, which is overflowing with wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, crutches, canes, hospital beds, and all other associated medical devices. Morse gets the items secondhand from friends and neighbors who no longer need them. See MORSE page 3...

Protecting the Starlight
By Susan Richardson Contributing Writer YORK A velvet black sky filled with stars to wish upon is an
amazing sight, and York is one of many Maine towns taking action to protect the view. In the search for light fixtures as part of York Beach
improvements, Dean Lessard, Director of Public Works, cited dark sky compliance as one of the considerations, along with concerns about energy efficiency and low maintenance. “We spent a lot of time and energy searching for these fixtures,” said Lessard. Poorly directed artificial lighting in populated areas causes a yellow glow of light pollution that diminishes visibility of the night sky. According to the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), a non-profit organi-
zation founded in 1988, this haze of pollution not only affects the aesthetic enjoyment of the sky, but also impacts astronomy, ecosystems, and human circadian rhythms. An IDA statistic identifies the estimated cost in the United States from wasted energy due to inefficient lighting to be $2.2 billion. One of IDA’s many initiatives includes a ‘Fixture Seal of Approval’ program using photometric readings to rate the degree to which lighting manufacturer’s

After attending the University of New Hampshire, she worked as a nurse in Boston before returning to Maine in 1980. During that time, Morse worked with the Wells-Ogunquit Health Association, which specialized in getting expensive medical equipment and devices to those who need them. Back then, Morse recalls, towns like Wells were much more community oriented. “It
was not uncommon for people to donate things they were no longer using to their neighbors,” she said. Indeed, Morse is a firm believer in the concept of communal sharing. “It’s very annoying to me to have anything wasted,” she said. “This way, if you have a wheelchair you no longer need, we loan it to somebody who does. It’s not just sitting there unused.” Morse attributes the steady demand for her supplies to modern advances in medicine which allow people to live much longer. “We can do so much

Now, in Kittery, Maine, the K-Laser is helping local residents with knee pain live more active, pain-free lives.
Living With Knee Pain Can Feel Crippling Let’s face it, your knees aren’t as young as they used to be, and playing with the kids or grandkids isn’t any easier either. Maybe your knee pain keeps you from walking short distances or climbing stairs like you used to. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your knee hurts and the pain just won’t go away! My name is Dr. Jeff Donatello, owner of York Chiropractic Health Center, and for the last year we have been using the most effective laser, called the K-laser, for pain on knees. Don’t take my word for it. Read these testimonials of people just like yourself who gave the K-laser a try. Cold laser therapy has been tested for 40 years, had over 2000 papers published on it, and shown to aid in damaged tissue regeneration, decreasing inflammation, relief of pain, and boosting the immune system. Understand not all cold laser is created equal. The K-laser
Testimonials “I had pain for over two years in my knee and sleeping was getting to be a problem. After two cortisone shots didn’t work I was looking at surgery. I saw Dr. Donatello’s ad and since he was my chiropractor, I thought I would give it a try. I am amazed to no longer have any pain and would recommend his treatments to others.” Tim Fitzgerald - York, ME “After 9 years of knee pain, I was ready to buy a motorized wheelchair. The two best orthopedists in the area wanted to replace both my knees. My husband drove me everywhere. After 6 weeks of working with Dr. Donatello, I have only mild pain in my knees and I get around by myself. I now have my life back.” Judy Philbrick - Rochester, NH
is the most powerful laser available which allows it to safely and painlessly penetrate deep into the knee joint to make healing happen quicker. For the first 15 callers only, I’m running a very special offer where you can find out if you are a candidate for K-laser therapy. What does this offer include? Everything I normally do in my Knee Pain Evaluation. Just call and here’s what you’ll receive: • An in-depth consultation about your problem where I will listen – really listen, to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination of the knee. • An actual treatment with the K-laser. Call today and we can get started with your exam and treatment as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our office is called York Chiropractic Health Center and you can find us at Route One Bypass in Kittery, Maine. Tell Carrie, our receptionist, you’d like to come in for the Knee Pain Evaluation. Sincerely, Jeff Donatello, D.C, C.N.S, C.F.M.P
“I had pain for years in my knees at night. I now am sleeping through the night having gone through Dr. Donatello’s treatments.” Freda Webb (Age 93) York Harbor, ME “I had burning in my right knee for 6 years. I wouldn’t even think of shoveling snow with the pain and after working with Dr. Donatello, I am out shoveling again. I am really happy with the way the laser and his adjustments helped my knee pain go away.” Monique Cote - Sanford, ME “I have had pain in my knees for over 20 years with very bad arthritis. After one month of working with the laser the pain is 90% better. I really enjoyed coming here as the staff is very nice. I recommend it now to others.” Rachel Leclair - N. Berwick, ME
“I was having a lot of leg pain at night, almost like someone was gripping my leg with their hand. After one treatment with the K-laser I was able to sleep through the night for the first time in 6 months. I am happy with Dr. Donatello’s approach and the results.” Bev Giddens - Hollis, ME “I had pain over the entire top of my foot for many years. I have gone through 4 weeks of laser therapy and the pain is gone. I recommend you try this therapy.” Norman Vetter - Farmington, NH “I was limping around pretty badly when I first came into Dr. Donatello’s office. I am now walking normally as the pain in my knee has dropped tremendously. I think the laser really, really helped it.” Richard Daisy - N. Berwick, ME

~ News ~ ...LIGHT from page 2 area needed. Holophane’s IDAapproved dark sky compliant FCO model has been installed in the low pedestrian areas around Short Sands without sidewalks. Glass lens fixtures, which provide better vertical light for seeing people’s faces and are dark sky friendly according to Bailey, have been installed in high-pedestrian areas with sidewalks such as the Short Sands intersection. Both fixtures use energy-efficient LED lights, with 70-watts in the full cut-off and 100 watts in the glass lens model. Lessard said that to the best of his understanding, the LED lights used are probably one of the most efficient on the market, and dark sky compliance is “now kind of the buzzword in lighting.” According to Bailey, the vast majority of towns in Maine
are aware of the dark sky movement. In addition to its fixture approval initiative, the IDA also has a program working directly with towns and municipalities through the International Dark Sky Communities designation program. Balancing a town’s many concerns regarding budget costs,
the best interests of its residents, and natural resources is a challenge. The town of York is one of the communities attempting to take efficiency, along with the enjoyment and protection of the environment, into consideration. “You don’t want to be wasting the light up in the sky — you want to see the stars,” said Lessard.

‘The Way They Were’ Tour
SOUTH BERWICK – On Sunday, June 29, join a special tour that goes behindthe-scenes of one of 36 historic properties owned and operated by Historic New England and the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive regional heritage organization in the country . ‘The Way They Were’ is a unique guided tour that explores the lives of domestic servants and hired help in the early twentieth century, focusing on what it
was like to live and work in the ‘back’ of the house. Hamilton House, built circa 1785, became the summer home of the well-to-do Tyson family of Boston in 1897. The Tysons transformed Hamilton House into a beautiful retreat with Colonial Revival interiors, elaborate gardens, wooded walking and riding trails, and a romantic little garden cottage for their own pleasure and the entertainment of family and
friends. While house tours typically detail the lifestyle of these wealthy owners, ‘The Way They Were’ offers a look at the day-today living of the servants whose
toil enabled this lifestyle. You will explore side yards and back stairways once frequented by grounds-keepers and domestics. You’ll also visit the fourth floor attic where servants enjoyed the stunning view of the Salmon Falls River from the mansion’s sky light. ‘The Way They Were’ tour will begin at the Hamilton Garden Cottage, 40 Vaughan Lane, South Berwick at 5:30 p.m. The program will be repeated Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for Historic New England members and $15 for

the five month service learning project. Accompanying the Governor’s wife to WJHS was Lynn Harvey, Director of the Blaine House and Executive Assistant to Maine’s First Lady and Christina Toriello Project Manager for the National Veterans Family Center. State lawmakers who attended included Representative Kathy Chase and Senator Ron Collins. In the school’s multipurpose room, Mrs. Le Page, WOCSD Superintendent Ellen Schneider and other attendees including school staff and fifth grade students watched a slide show featuring students at work on the quilts, each with a distinctive “lone-star” design. During the event, Mrs. Le Page, Principal Chessie and Superintendent Schneider made brief comments about the fifth grade project. After the slide show, groups

The squares for the quilts were designed with triangles. Each fifth grader created a star quilt square from nine squares creating a distinct look. Kilbride wishes to thank teachers Cindy Roche, Alice Meader, Cheryl Turner, Donny Abbott, Beth Goodwin, Linda Gaidimas and school volunteer Carol Dalton who assisted with the project. She also wishes to thank the WJHS Parent Teachers Organization (PTO) for providing snacks for the First Lady’s visit and funding for batting and fabric and parent volunteers who donated fabric and time helping students on days there was inclass sewing.

Katherine Cornbrooks Hosts Art Show At Atria KENNEBUNK Katharine Cornbrooks, originally from New York, moved to Washington DC with her family at the age of ten. In her twenties she worked as a fashion illustrator creating ads for newspapers while her husband Charles was away in the Navy. “I wanted to make money and decided to do something I would enjoy. Back then, all ads were drawn, unlike today where photographs of models are taken.
They don’t interest me. I miss the classic sketches,” said Kate. While living in Kennebunkport, Kate did many architectural drawings of the ‘Kennebunks’ and famous buildings in Block Island, R.I. She completed these assignments for various projects, books and magazines. Cornbrooks now resides at Atria Kennebunk and is proud that she was able to showcase her talented work once more.

Instead, he visited in the summer, and then stayed in the cold of the winter to learn the lives and personalities of the island’s small permanent community. Best of all, Moore will speak about this fascinating process as part of the Opening Reception, and show off not only one of his photographs, but have copies of his book that you can look at - and buy. ARUNDEL Musical theatre doesn’t get any better than this! Arundel Barn Playhouse is pleased to announce the presentation of ‘A Chorus Line’ from July 1 to July 12. The story focuses on final cuts being made at a grueling chorus dancers’ audition, as hopes fill the dreams of the finalists. These dedicated actors put their talent and lives on the line for the chance of a lifetime. Packed with exhilarating dance, drama and music like ‘One Singular Sensation’, ‘Dance 10 Looks 3’, and ‘What I Did For Love’. ‘A Chorus Line’, winner of 9 Tony Awards and The Pulitzer Drama Prize, was the first musical comedy to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the loving and realistic stories of each of these aspiring dancers. When the play opened in New York, it changed the casting process forever. Previously, singers, dancers and actors were auditioned and selected in individual groups. The format of ‘A Chorus Line’ created the emergence of what is now known in theatre as ‘triple threats’, actors who sing and

‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ at Hackmatack Playhouse BERWICK ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ was one of the longest running Broadway plays. The movie adaptation starred Cary Grant. It was written in 1939 by American playwright Joseph Kesselring. But it’s more recent history of revivals locally, in the quaint Berwick, Maine barn playhouse known as The Hackmatack, may spark interest among seacoast area play goers. The theater is located on School Street (Route 9), Berwick. This is the third production of ‘Arsenic’, running through July 5 at The Hackmatack. Carol Davenport and Tinka Darling Finley were both in the 1992 version and return to recreate the roles of the Aunts this summer. Right, 22 years later! Another trivia tidbit, Jerry Hansen played a dead body in the 1980 ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ at The Hackmatack, and is back

ciety through the Island Institute’s fellow program. During her second year, she wrote essays about her life on the island based on tales and photographs she encountered during her work. These essays were written for the Working Waterfront Newspaper. Toward the end of her fellowship The History Press contacted Kate to see if she would be interested in publishing a book based on her essays. Author Kate Webber illustrates island life with humor, affection and the voices of islanders—from the first settlement and 1950’s hijinks, to courtship and commerce. Explore the first and last one-room schools, island romance in sock-hop days, and coastal celebrations. No one kicks up their heels on the third of July like Swan’s Islanders! Could You Afford to Live to 100? Here’s an interesting statistic: Over the past three decades, the centenarian population in the United States has grown about 66 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a good chance of living to 100 - but the possibility may not be as remote as it once was. In any case, if you do plan to retire in your mid-60s, and you are in good health, you may well have two, or even three, decades ahead of you. To enjoy this time to the fullest - and to help prevent the possibility of outliving your financial resources — you will need to invest for income and growth throughout your retirement years. As a retiree, how much income do you need from your investments? There’s no one “right” percentage for everyone. Furthermore, you shouldn’t have to rely solely on your investment portfolio, because you may have other sources - such as Social Security and potentially your employer-sponsored retirement plan - from which to draw income. Nonetheless, your investments
can play a big role in providing you with the income you’ll need during retirement. Many retirees depend on fixed-rate investments for a good portion of their retirement income - so it’s a real challenge when interest rates are low, as they have been for the past several years. Consequently, when you retire, you’ll certainly need to be aware of the interest-rate environment and the income you can expect from these investments. Longer-term fixedrate vehicles may be tempting, as they typically offer higher rates than shorter-term ones, but these longer-term investments may have more price fluctuation and inflation risk than shorter-term investments. Ultimately, you’ll likely need a balance between short-, intermediate- and longterm fixed-income investments to provide for a portion of your income in retirement. While it’s important to invest for income, you can’t ignore the need for growth - because you won’t want to lose purchasing power to inflation. As you know, we’ve experienced quite mild inflation recently. But over time, even a low rate of inflation can seriously erode
your purchasing power. To illustrate: If your current monthly costs are $3,000, they will be about $4,000 in 10 years with only a 3 percent annual inflation rate. And in 25 years at that same rate, your monthly costs will have more than doubled, to about $6,200. To help protect yourself against inflation risk, you should consider having at least some investments that offer growth potential, rather than only owning fixed-income vehicles. And some investment vehicles, such as dividend-paying stocks, can offer both growth potential and current income. In fact, some stocks have paid, and even increased, their dividends for many years in a row, giving
you not just income, but rising income. (Keep in mind, though, that companies are not obligated to pay dividends, and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.) To determine the right mix of growth and income vehicles for your individual needs, consult with a financial advisor who is familiar with your retirement plans, your risk tolerance and your family situation. And
it may well be a good idea to plan for a very long retirement. You may not live to be 100 - but it would be a good feeling to know that you could afford to do so. In just the last ten years, 6.4 million of our kids nationally between the ages of 4-17 years old, have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). “This staggering number is representative of every man, woman and child who live in the state of Massachusetts,” says Dr. Jeff Donatello, Clinical Director of the Clearmind Institute of New England. “You have to ask yourself what is going on.” While the causes may be very complex, if you are a parent of one of those 6.4 million children or teens, you know the problem is very real. While acting out and the ability to not pay attention in school or at home, potentially makes for a tough life times, the real issue is what happens when they become adults. Most studies show that better than half of the adult male prison population (some estimate 75 percent) have some form of ADHD. Those are sobering numbers. For years, people who suffer from brain based illnesses like ADD/ADHD have been offered stimulant medications often with frustrating results. While Ritalin or Adderall may give temporary relief in some cases, the medications have verifiable and unwanted side effects in the short term and questionable effects on long term brain health.

There are many forms of alternative therapy for ADHD, but one that has recently come into light as being extremely effective, is Neurofeedback. Neurofeedback is guided exercise for the brain. More specifically, it’s a way to retrain dysregulated brainwave patterns and improve brain function. Once healthy organized patterns are formed, the brain becomes more stable and is able to operate optimally and efficiently. This procedure helps all sorts of conditions from anxiety and depression to PTSD and pain. But the condition it has really shined with over the last decade is ADHD. “Hands down, this is the most effective therapy out there for this condition and very few doctors seem to know about or promote it. Getting doctors to use or recommend this therapy when they are trained in medications will likely take time,” says Dr. Donatello. The good news is that this may not be the case for long as evidenced by this quote from Dr. Frank H. Duffy, a professor of pediatric neurology at Harvard Medical School. He says, “In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy (as neurofeedback), it would be universally accepted

Health & Fitness York Ambulance Coloring Contest Winners YORK York Ambulance held their open house to recognize and honor their emergency medical service crew and announce the pre-school coloring contest winners. Mary Andrews, President of the Board of Directors of the non-profit organization was proud to recognize the crew, who cumulatively have over 180 years of experience and noted that more than half of them are licensed beyond the basic EMT level. The York Ambulance provides emergency medical services, (EMS) at a person’s home to assess and intervene with lifesaving procedures and medications before transport to a hospital. Although all public safety personnel work as a team, the EMS practitioners are not the police or firefighters. President
Andrews stated that the level of care provided by York Ambulance “the same service as in the big cities.” At the open house community members were able to meet the crew and explore one of the three fully equipped advanced life support ambulances. In addition to responding to 911 calls, York Ambulance also provides non-emergency, medically necessary transfers and soon will be adding a wheel chair van, making it a full service medical transport organization. York Ambulance also serves to safeguard the health of those in the community through their blood pressure and blood sugar checks at the York Senior Center or at the station. The crew is also available to go to a home and perform home safety assessments for fall and other accident preventions. These services are at no cost to a

Health & Fitness ...ADHD from page 16 and widely used.” Even more impressive is the American Academy of Pediatrics recent announcement that it approved neurofeedback as a “level one” or “best support” treatment for ADHD. So what exactly is Neurofeedback? It’s a type of biofeedback that uses electroencephalography (EEG) to measure the function of the human brain. These signals are then used to give feedback to the person about their own brainwave activity. It may sound complex but it’s not. Modern computer software is now able to effectively read the EEG signal then the feedback, usually a movie or music, is returned to the person being trained. This feedback loop can produce changes in brainwave activity. The process used to adjust brainwave activity is known as operant conditioning. This is a method where rewards for positive behavior increase learning capabilities. “The concept is fairly simple,” says Dr. Donatello.
“The computer monitors your brainwaves while you watch a movie or listen to music. When deviations from normal brainwave activity occur, the computer triggers the TV monitor to make the sound and video start to get quiet and darken. This alerts you that you are outside normal ranges. These cues are received by the brain, which subconsciously adjusts itself back to a normal pattern to make the TV monitor get louder and clearer so that you can enjoy the show you are watching in the office. Train-
ing sessions usually last 30 minutes or so. The brain is a learning machine and with enough repetition of this process (usually 20-40 visits), the brain eventually learns to stay in the normal ranges on its own without the computer. “With the brain functioning normally on its own, symptoms of irregular brain activity will decline.” says Dr. Donatello. It has been well documented that people who suffer with ADHD have abnormal brain

We have determined through case studies using QEEG “brain maps” that people with Attention-DeficitDisorder (ADD) have elevated delta brainwaves. ~ News ~ Kennebunk Elementary Receives $3,000 For Violin Program
KENNEBUNK Katrina Swift sang “Old MacDonald had a Farm” last Friday at the weekly Kennebunk Elementary School Friday Morning Assembly. Her performance served as the opening act for Jen Lewia’s classroom’s performance of ‘The Lorax’, a children’s book written by Dr. Seuss. Miss Swift is a Regional School Unit 21 alumna,
“Was It A Bird? ...A Plane?” CMP Uses Helicopters
and sophomore music major at Manhattenville College. Following her performance for the 500 students, staff and guests at KES, Swift presented the school with a $3,000 donation from her family foundation, Aubrey’s End Foundation, which will fund a new violin program at KES. The new violin program will be in place for the 20142015 school year.
No… It was a Haverfield Aviation helicopter, doing work on the Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP). Many local residents were witness to the helicopter hovering over the power lines in Wells on Wednesday of this week. According to Central Maine Power (CMP), the helicopter is pulling “straw line” onto new transmission structures that have been set in a corridor running from our Maguire Road Substation in Kennebunk to our Three Rivers Substation in Eliot. Pulling straw line is the first of a three-step process to install conductors onto transmission structures. In the second step, a larger cable will be attached to the straw line and pulled through. In the third and final step, the new transmission conductors will be attached to the cable, pulled through, and clipped onto the transmission structures. The MPRP will ensure the

long-term reliability of CMP’s bulk power system. The project includes the construction of four new 345-kilovolt substations and one new 115-kilovolt substation and related facilities linked by approximately 440 miles of new transmission lines. The new facilities will reinforce the backbone of CMP’s 40-year-old bulk power system and create greater capacity for the integration of new generation in the New England region. The MPRP is the largest
construction project ever undertaken in Maine. More than 2,700 people are employed directly in the construction, and a 2009 economic impact study projected that the construction spending would generate as many as 900 more jobs through indirect and induced employment. Begun in September of 2010, the company expects to complete construction in mid-2015. For more information, visit www.mainepower.com.

tional Park Service that found the York River is a good candidate for a Wild and Scenic River Study. Such a study could designate the York River as a Wild and Scenic Partnership River, which could foster federal investments to protect the economic and environmental value of the watershed. Last year, Senator King introduced legislation that would authorize the study. “The integrity of the York River is economically and environmentally important to the towns and communities that surround it,” said Senator King. “I am hopeful that the Park Service will complete a full study of whether the river should be classified as Wild and Scenic, and I’m pleased that this report brings us one step closer to achieving that goal.” In September of 2013,

Senator King introduced legislation that would authorize a multi-year study of the York River to determine whether it is suitable to be designated as a Wild and Scenic Partner-
ship River. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME-01) also introduced the bill in the House of Representatives, and the House passed her bill earlier this year.

SPORTS “He is passionate about not only baseball, but his academics and his community,” commented Kreie. “He is the core of the Warriors pitching staff and I hope to see him play in college. He is simply one of the best well rounded kids I have met.” In the fall, McMinnis plans to study Electrical Engineering at the University of Maine at Orono.
McMinis Named ‘Athlete of the Month WELLS Wells High School senior Bennie McMinis has been selected Athlete of the Month for April. This award is in recognition of McMinis’s academics, sportsmanship, and participation on the WHS Warriors Boys Baseball Team. “I was definitely surprised,” said McMinis about receiving this student-athlete award. “It was nice to get some good news after last week (when) I tore my ACL.” McMinis started on the team during his sophomore year. In his first two games this season he pitched to just one hit in 13 innings striking out 25 batters. This year the team played in the Western Maine Confer-
ence Class B playoffs. According to WHS activities director Jack Molloy, McMinis became the winning pitcher in a preliminary round game with Freeport which ended in a score of 8 to 3. McMinis “struck out 11, walked three and didn’t allow an earned run in a three-hitter,” commented Molloy. Presenting McMinis with an plaque on May 28 was Jack Molloy, John C. Kreie of Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Pamela Moody-Maxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate. “Bennie McMinis is not just a great athlete on the baseball field but he also is a great person who leads by example,” commented Moody-Maxon.
The Athlete of the Month award at Wells High School is sponsored by Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Moody Maxon Real Estate. Athletes picked to receive this honor are selected by Molloy and Principal Jim Daly.

WELLS Pip and George Meet two beautiful kitties available for adoption. They’re currently living the good life at St. David’s Budget Box Thrift Shop in Kennebunk (207-9853544). Carolyn Gowdy, their thrift shop manager, is a great animal lover and has hosted Safe Haven kitties at The Budget Box for many years. She understood that this would be a great opportunity for not only Pip and George, two kitties who test positive for the Feline Leukemia Virus, but also a great educational opportunity. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I have a 6 month old Dell Windows 8 laptop and I’ve been reading your helpful emails for a very long time. I purchased your e-book about buying a computer and am very happy with the computer I bought. Now I want to protect my data and just purchased a portable hard drive. Do I need to get the Acronis True Image software? The sales person at the store said I don’t need extra software. Is it better to only copy pictures and data, or better to copy everything on the computer? Is that what the Acronis software does? Thanks for any help you can provide. Thanks oodles, Karen Dear Karen, I’m glad you find my articles helpful, and I am very glad that you are being proactive
in protecting your data! Many people don’t do anything about backing up their files until their hard drive crashes, and they have lost their precious data. Most external hard drives do come with some sort of software that will help you backup your files, but it is different for each product, and not all of them have all the features you might need. Here are some of the things that I look for. Is it easy to use? Some programs are easier than others. Will it run automatically? Acronis will run on a regular schedule, so that you don’t have to remember to backup. I don’t know about you, but if I have to rely on my memory, not as many things will get done. Are the backed up files easily accessible? Some backup programs package your files in their proprietary format,

and you need the backup program in order to retrieve the files. That works fine until your computer crashes and you want to access the files on your external hard drive from another computer that doesn’t have the software installed on it. I hope this helps with your backup. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Loyal and happy subscriber here! My question is this: I have many photos on my computer (Windows 7), some in my Pictures folder, and some in a folder in My Documents (when transferred over from an old computer). I’d like to organize all these photos in one place with the ability to cross reference them. For instance, I’d like to look them up by people, holiday, date, etc. Is there a way to do this? I know it will be a long process, but I want to do it right the first time. Thank you! Stephanie
Dear Stephanie, You are right, it will be a time consuming process, but with the right software, you should have no trouble with your organizing. Here are some things that I do. I have a folder for each year. Inside the year folder, I create a folder for each month. Inside the month folders, I create subfolders for different events like a birthday party or trip to the zoo. Once you have your photos organized by date and event, you really need some sort of photo management software to take it to the next level and be able to cross reference. Picasa would be a good, free option. With photo management software, you can tag the images with names of people, places, events, really anything that you want to use to organize your photos. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I want to know how to

change the color of my mouse pointer. Thank you, Helen Dear Helen, In the Control Panel, you can select a set of pointers to use. Some of the available schemes use different colors to make the pointer more visible. Let’s get started. 1. Click on “Start” and then “Control Panel”. 2. In the Control Panel, click on “Hardware and Sound” 3. Under, “Devices and Printers” click on “Mouse”. 4. The mouse properties dialog box will open. Click on the “Pointers” tab. 5. In the “Scheme” section, click on the drop down list to select a scheme, and preview the results in the box below. 6. When you have found a scheme that you like, click the “OK” button to save your changes and close the dialog box. If you don’t find a scheme that you like, you can always search for more cursor schemes online and install one of those. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
