Travel Channel Visits New England’s Boon Island – Airing June 27 YORK – The Travel Channel visited the small rock off the coast of York to recreate the dark and mysterious events that occurred there in December 1710, which were chronicled in the awardwinning book, Boon Island: A True Story of Mutiny, Shipwreck, and Cannibalism, by local authors Andrew Vietze and Stephen Erickson. The wreck of the British merchant vessel Nottingham Galley on the tiny isle became an international sensation in the early eighteenth century and will be the focus of an episode of the popular show ‘Monumental Mysteries’ this season. Crew members endured the better part of a month on the rock in the winter without any provisions. Four men died, and the remaining ten, at their “last extremity,” as their captain put it, were forced to eat one of the bodies in order to survive. When they were eventually rescued, Captain John Deane told one

story; his crew told another, a much darker tale of mutiny, betrayal, and attempted murder. Where did the truth lie? Writers Andrew Vietze and Stephen Erickson turned this fascinating history into Boon Island: A True Story of Mutiny, Shipwreck, and Cannibalism. The book won a gold at the Independent Publishers Book Awards in New York, was a Book of the Year finalist (ForeWord), and recently rose

walker after falling and breaking his arm earlier this year, she knew exactly who to turn to: Sally Morse. Morse operates a medical equipment loan closet, which Coggeshall knew would provide her with exactly the type of walker Harold needed. “Sally is wonderful,” said Coggeshall. “Whatever kinds of equipment you need, she has it. And if she doesn’t have it, she gets it.” This was not the first time the Coggeshalls, residents of Wells, had benefited from Morse’s services. When Mary Coggeshall fractured her arm a year ago, Morse promptly loaned her a wheelchair. “Anything you need,” Coggeshall reiterates, “She has it.” For the past 33 years, Morse has been aiding neighbors like the Coggeshalls with her medical equipment loan closet. She runs the “closet” out of her garage on Post Road in Wells, which is overflowing with wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, crutches, canes, hospital beds, and all other associated medical devices. Morse gets the items secondhand from friends and neighbors who no longer need them. See MORSE page 3...
