“A Woman to Remember: Helen Churchill Candee Opens at Museum

Helen Churchill Candee, a first class survivor of the RMS Titanic spend her summers in York.

YORK A new exhibit entitled “A Woman to Remember: Helen Churchill Candee will open on July 4 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Emerson-Wilcox house. Although best remembered as a first class survivor of the infamous luxury liner, RMS Titanic, York summer resident Helen Churchill Hungerford Candee had already led an extraordinary life by that fateful

morning of April 15, 1912. Long before jumping into Lifeboat #6 alongside “Unsinkable Molly Brown, Helen was recognized as a women’s rights advocate, groundbreaking author, interior designer, tapestry connoisseuse, and world traveler. In spite of her well-established career as a writer, Helen published only one piece about the Titanic’s tragedy; her reputation as a survivor, however, followed her for

the rest of her life. Old York Historical Society will be inviting visitors into this exhibit, as well as its other offerings for free on July 4, $5 other days. Visit the Old Gaol, the Emerson-Wilcox House, Jefferds Tavern and the Schoolhouse. Museums of Old York is located at 3 Lindsay Road in York. If you have any questions, call 207-363-1756.

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental
