‘Rapid Result COVID-19 Testing Center’ Ready for Visitors
York Hospital staff and volunteers ready for their next patient at Rapid Result COVID-19 Testing Center on Route 1 in York. Left to right: Heather Ryan, MA; Charity Neal, RN and Director of Emergency & Surgical Services; Maura Reed, Medical-Surgical RN; Erich Fogg, PA-C and Director of Walk-In Services; Heather Bird, Care Access.
YORK York Hospital, in partnership with the state of Maine Department of Health and Human Services, opened its drive-thru ‘Rapid Result COVID-19 Testing Center’ on July 1 at the Hospital’s Walk-In Care location at 343 US Route One in York. This new program allows those at elevated risk of COVID-19 infection to get a test without a provider referral, with results available within minutes. The intent is to make testing more widely
available to visitors planning to vacation in Maine, or Maine residents returning from elsewhere, who may forego the 14-day quarantine with a negative test result. At the York Rapid Result COVID-19 Testing Center, appointments are available for any individuals who believe they may have COVID-19 or could have been exposed to the virus, with or without symptoms, as defined under the DHHS Standing Order. This includes individuals traveling to Maine from
states with a higher prevalence of COVID-19, among others. For clarification on eligibility and other Maine Rapid Result Testing questions, visit www.maine.gov. Appointments must be made in advance, online at www.yorkhospital.com/COVID -19-testing-info. Although the $25 fee must be paid at the time of testing (or while reserving online), individuals can request See TEST page 24...
Maine Ballot Questions Better Explained If voters approve the bond, it means that the State of Maine is allowed to borrow money for the project and has to pay it back over 10 years. This will be $15,000,000 Principal plus $4,125,000 Interest (assumes 5.0% over 10 years) for a total cost of $19,125,000. The primary arguments FOR this referendum are: About 50% of the state is considered unserved or underserved for high-
speed internet access; There’s an increased need for high-speed internet with schools moving online and people working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic; High-speed internet can improve services such as healthcare and education; New residents and businesses may be attracted to Maine if the state has high-speed internet access; Low population density makes it difficult to the private sector to
STATEWIDE On July 14, Mainers will be taking part in the next statewide election and in addition to local representation, voters will also decide the fate of two ballot questions. million, matched by $30 million in other funds, for high-speed internet infrastructure improvements in areas where infrastructure is lacking. A YES vote means you are in favor of Maine borrowing $15 million to improve highspeed internet infrastructure. A NO vote means you don’t want Maine to borrow $15 to improve high-speed internet infrastructure.
Question 1: Internet Infrastructure This question is whether or not the state should borrow $15

WELLS This month Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) proudly celebrates the 50th anniversary of its renaming in honor of the world-renowned marine biologist, author, environmentalist and former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee, Rachel Carson. The refuge will be kicking off a year-long celebration to mark the formal dedication of the renaming, which took place on June 27, 1970. During the 50th anniversary celebration, the refuge will be highlighting dozens of opportunities to explore its wealth of wildlife, habitat and natural resources, as well as Rachel Carson’s legacy. “It’s hugely motivating to work at a refuge named after one

NY, NJ, CT Visitors Now Exempt from Testing/Quarantine in Maine STATEWIDE Last week Governor Mills announced that New York, New Jersey and Connecticut visitors are exempt from the testing/ quarantine requirements. At this time, Massachusetts is still not included in the exemption, Mills said, as they are “not as safe as Maine.” This is based on their positivity rate and rate of disease in the population, officials said. In addition, Mills said businesses in coastal counties, including York, must enforce the mask mandate. “Furthermore, with more people coming to Maine’s coastal towns and cities, the use of face coverings will become even more important. Governor Mills will issue an Executive Order requiring Maine’s large retail stores, lodging establishments, restaurants, and outdoor bars and tasting rooms in the coastal counties of Hancock, Waldo, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Cumberland, and York, and in the more populous cities of Bangor and Brewer and Lewiston and Auburn, to enforce the State’s face covering requirement.” At this time, visitors from Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine can enjoy Maine without any quarantine or testing restrictions. Visitors from all other states may come to Maine and stay in commercial lodging establishments if they EITHER

A lodging establishment may arrange for take-out, delivery, or grocery services for the visitors; Visitors can leave their hotel room or campsite during these 14 days but only for limited outdoor activities as long as they are not around other people. WOCSD Recognizes Retiring Staff, Years of Service
WELLS At the end of each school year, the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District (WOCSD) recognizes retiring staff members and those reaching the 20-year milestone of service to the District. This recognition typically takes place during a
special luncheon on the last day of school. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the “Celebration of Service to Education” luncheon at Wells Junior High School in June was not possible. WOCSD Superintendent James Daly has presided over
these luncheons for several years. Recently, he offered words of appreciation for the current group of departing staff members. “These folks have done a tremendous job for our students and community over the years,” commented Daly. “We will miss them dearly! We wish them all the best in their

Those with 20 years of service include Sherri Anderson-Wormwood, Gale Bernard, Dianne Bowen, Susan Dugovic, Carol Gilblair, Robert Gilpatric, Cindy Mitchell, Myra Richard, and Greg Trzaskowski. “WOCSD is saying goodbye to a tremendous group of educators as they retire from their careers,” commented Director of Instruction and Special Services Stacey Schatzabel who wishes the group “health and best wishes.” Considering the unusual times that finds these 14 staff members retiring, Schatzabel observed, “It feels strange to not celebrate (in person) our employees

who have served Wells-Ogunquit students and families. Their dedication to the district goes above and beyond. We are grateful for their service.” In recognition of this service and their contributions to the District, each retiree received an engraved glass clock. Staff members who completed 20 years of service received an engraved glass apple. ...VISITORS from page 2 include walking or hiking in uncrowded areas, biking, kayaking, and canoeing. Testing Resources Update: While there are additional states exempt, visitors from from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and other states must still receive a negative test or quarantine. The good news is that those visitors can get tested locally and get results within 15 minutes at York Hospital’s drive-through testing facility on Route 1 in York. York Hospital has partnered with the state to offer rapid COVID-19 testing, different than the ‘swab and send’ program. See article on front page for details.

When visiting Rachel Carson NWR, please note the following current conditions and plan accordingly: The Visitor Center at 321 Port Road in Wells, is closed; The Carson Trail, adjacent visitor parking lot, and restrooms are open; Trails at Cutts Island and Timber Point are open; If parking lots are full when you visit, please do not stop; Restrooms at Cutts Island Trail are closed until further notice. Kittery Society Publishes Bicentennial Booklet KITTERY Two hundred years ago, Maine became the 23rd state of the United States. Many planned events around the state are postponed until next year. To honor Maine’s bicentennial, the Kittery Historical and Naval Society has published “A Brief History of Kittery” as a booklet. This includes the story of how Maine became a state in 1820. The booklet is like a timeline, with two-page chapters, each about an era in the town’s history. Publication was supported by a grant from the Rosamond Thaxter Foundation.

“We know of nothing else quite like this booklet,” says Bob Gray, President of the Society. “We hope people will share it to broaden the understanding of our town’s history.” While the Kittery Museum and several town buildings are closed, the booklet is now available in electronic form at the museum’s website (www.kitterymuseum.com). Members of the society are receiving a printed copy of the booklet, as well as the latest quarterly newsletter. The recent newsletter is a special edition, with original research and stories about the 1918 pandemic. To join the society, and also get a printed copy of the booklet, see the museum website for a membership form. The Kittery Historical and Naval Society, originally founded in 1935, is a nonprofit devoted to the study of local history. The society operates the “Kittery Historical and Naval Museum” near the Kittery traffic circle. In most years, the museum welcomes summer visitors from across the USA and around the world.

KENNEBUNK An exhibition exploring the lives and histories of recent immigrants to Maine, called “New Mainers,” is now on view at the Brick Store Museum in its contemporary Bauman Family Gallery. The collection of photo portraits were taken by Maine fine art photographer Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest, who published a photo book of the same name in 2009. The exhibition holds 26 portraits of recent immigrants to Maine from all over the world, and shares stories from their lives. A native of the Netherlands, Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest has resided in Maine since 1970. He started in photography in the early seventies after taking courses at the Portland School of Art. He also studied at the Maine Photographic Workshops with Joyce Tenneson and Arnold Newman. He photographed in a wide variety of geo-

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ OMAA Talks & Tours Begin OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) has officially begun its 2020 season and is continuing their Totally Tuesday Talks virtually this year on every Tuesday at 5 p.m. On July 14, self-taught photographer, Mac Cosgrove-Davies, will share images inspired by his extensive travel to developing countries as well as everyday American life. Using antique and handmade film cameras in various large and panoramic formats, Cosgrove-Davies seeks to match the image with the beauty of the selected photographic process. Artist Andy Rosen will lend insight into the creation of his site-specific installation, After Party, on July 21. July’s last Tuesday Talk will take place on July 28 and feature Libby Bischof, a 19th-century American cultural historian and associate professor of history at the University of Southern Maine. Bischof specializes in the history of photography, particularly in Maine. In addition to its permanent collections and special exhibits, the museum is also offering walking tours. Free
walking tours (with museum admission) began on Tuesday, July 7 and will continue to take place on alternating Tuesdays. These tours offer an insider’s look at the Ogunquit Art Colony and take place 11-11:45 a.m. weather permitting. There are also tours for seniors over 65 and visitors with health concerns. These free guided tours through OMAA’s beautiful sculpture gardens began on Wednesday, July 8 and take place on alternating Wednesdays. The OMAA is located at 543 Shore Road in Ogunquit. Dear Computer Lady, I was reading about transferring pictures on an iPhone to the iCloud and then to a desktop. My question is, can iCloud be trusted and is it safe? I ask this because my wife has pictures on her apple tablet which I would like to transfer to my computer for safe keeping and I was hoping not to use iCloud. Thanks for all you do! Mike Dear Mike, You can certainly transfer your photos without using iCloud, you can either email them from the tablet to the
~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ home computer, or you can connect your tablet to the computer using the USB charging cable and transfer using iTunes. To answer your question about iCloud, I did a little bit of research and found that it is as safe as most other cloud storage systems. iCloud secures your data by encrypting it when it’s sent over the internet. That means that it can’t be intercepted as it is travelling to and from their servers. Once the files are on the iCloud server, they are also stored in an encrypted format.

iCloud uses a minimum of 128-bit AES encryption (the same level of security employed by major financial institutions) and they never provide encryption keys to any third parties. This means that the security of your data stored on iCloud is up to you. Do you have a strong password, and do you use two-factor authentication. A strong password must be a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters along with some numbers and symbols. It should never be just one word that can be found in a dictionary because hackers have programs that can try every word in the dictionary on your account until it finds one that works. Two-factor authentication will ensure that someone else can’t access your account even if they know your password. When you sign into your
apple account on a new device, you will also have to enter a six digit number that is sent to your phone (or other device you set up). So, if you have a strong password and two-factor authentication in place, you can be confident that your photos are safe and secure. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Kindly find time to check out the link I’ve shown here. It came in from a software provider that I’ve used for sometime without problems. While it purportedly announces a new internet threat by a ransomeware program, termed “goldeneye/petya” that is supposedly “sweeping across Europe”. I’m a little concerned in that there are a few small signs of a poorly written message (typos), poor phraseology, etc. Would you take a read and let your readers know if you have your sources

Dear Ralph, There is indeed a ransomware threat named petya. I would guess that the reason for the webpage being poorly written is that the employee who wrote the page is not based in the US. However, rather than follow the steps listed in the article, I would simply make sure that I have installed critical Windows updates, make sure I am protected with a security program that will automatically protect me. In addition, you should always have a reliable and proven backup strategy. I am currently using Emsisoft AntiMalware. Emsisoft AntiMalware’s behavior blocker will detect zero-day ransomware threats so your data stays safe. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a question. Dear Computer Lady, Will you tell me how to copy a CD? I have a new computer with Windows 10. Thank you and God bless you, Joseph Dear Joseph, If you have a CD with documents or photos on it, you can just insert the disk and drag the files to a folder on your hard drive. Once the files have been copied to your hard drive, put in a blank disk, and drag the files from your hard drive to the new disk. If you have a music CD or a bootable disk, you want to first make sure you have the legal permission to copy the disk. Then, I would use a third party software package like Roxio Creator or Nero. Both of those programs have a simple disk copy feature that will walk you through making a completed copy of your disk. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Health & Fitness ALA Joins Laura Dern and CVS to Raise COVID-19 Funds AUGUSTA The American Lung Association is taking action to address the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare our nation for future respiratory diseases with Award-winning actress Laura Dern and CVS Health. From June 21 to July 18, anyone can donate at their local CVS Pharmacy® or online to support the Lung Association’s new COVID-19 Action Initiative. The initiative will invest $25 million over three years to expand COVID-19 research, increase access to vaccines and antivirals and prevent future respiratory pandemics. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maine has sadly reported 2,971 cases and 102 deaths as of June 23, 2020. The initiative will also support the 198,000 Maine residents living with a lung disease who are at high risk for complications from the virus. “COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on our communities, including those who are more vulnerable to the impacts of the disease, such as older adults, Black and Hispanic communities, and the 198,000 Maine residents who are living with a lung disease such as asthma or COPD,” said Gale Auclair, development director of the American Lung Association in Maine. “To save more lives, it will take everyone coming together, and we’re proud to stand alongside Laura Dern and CVS Health to raise funds for lifesaving research.” Dern is best known for her work in films such as Jurassic Park, Wild and in series including Showtime’s Twin Peaks and more recently HBO’s Big Little Lies. She recently won the Academy Award, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Marriage Story. “I am partnering with the American Lung Association and CVS Health so that we can give hope to everyone who would normally be vulnerable to infection, and prevent others from losing their loved ones,” said Dern. “If we come together, I know we can make a

positive impact in the lives of the millions of people impacted by this terrible disease.” Funds raised through the CVS Health campaign will allow the Lung Association to expand COVID-19 research within the current studies of their Airways Clinical Research Centers (ACRC) Network, as well as new coronavirus awards and grants to advance knowledge for preventive research, vaccines, antivirals and to advance future outbreak preparedness. The initiative will also enhance key public health measures through education and advocacy, and establish an advanced network of government, private industry and public health organizations to stop future respiratory virus pandemics. As a long-time partner of the American Lung Association, CVS Health has signed on as a leading sponsor of their COVID19 Action Initiative. In addition
to hosting the in-store fundraising campaign, CVS Health is now
providing drive-thru COVID-19 testing at CVS Pharmacy locations in Maine. These tests are being offered at no-cost to improve access and necessary care
for historically underserved communities. For more information on the COVID-19 Action Initiative, visit www.lung.org/COVID-19.

Technology Provides Hope for Mental Health The constant stream of stressful news never seems to end. A confluence of earth-shattering events – the coronavirus pandemic and mass protests – causes millions of people to check on the latest developments via their social media feed.
The habit has given rise to the term “doom scrolling” – continuing to scroll through bad news even though it’s disheartening or depressing. But while technology can keep people down in the dumps with reports of the latest dismal events, it also provides a

way for them to improve their mental health. And that’s important because the pandemic is pushing America into a mental health crisis, says Matt Marek, founder and CEO of Good Neighbor (www.goodneighbor.care), which provides mental health services and assistance with developmental disabilities. “As COVID-19 cases surge across many states, the mental health industry needs to act fast in order to help people who are falling into their own crisis,” Marek says. “But the good news is that the industry is better equipped to help people, thanks in large part to technology.” Marek points to three key technological access points that make help for mental health troubles more readily available: Smartphone apps: These can help people cope with anxiety, depression, addiction and other disorders. There are hundreds of available apps, and they allow users to share stories and cope with symptoms. “When you can’t afford therapy but are struggling to handle your illness alone, apps are a good alternative,” Marek says. “Most are free and others are reasonably priced, and they offer resources that make therapeutic techniques more accessible and cost-effective.
Telehealth: With social distancing still a primary safety measure, telehealth allows the patient to video conference with the doctor, and the method is gaining momentum in mental health. “Telehealth offers many advantages for mental health treatment,” Marek says. “It improves access and comfort for patients who won’t see a doctor in person, and sometimes video conferencing is more beneficial than phone calls because a human connection happens faster via video. Internet support groups: With some people not comfortable attending support groups near their homes, internet support groups provide an alternative. “People can be anonymous and feel comfortable revealing their struggles and engaging with other participants,” Marek says. “One of the best things about support groups always has been the sense of community and comfort in relating to others going through
similar struggles as yourself. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found nearly half the people in the United States feel the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting their mental health. Accessibility to mental health treatment has long been a problem, with people sometimes waiting three to six months to get an appointment, Marek says. The effects of the pandemic on people’s sense of isolation, anxiety, and the economy, coupled with the emotional impact of the social unrest, have made mental health options more important than ever. Matt Marek is the founder and CEO of Good Neighbor (www.goodneighbor.care), which provides mental health services and assistance with developmental disabilities. Health & Fitness Full Plates Full Potential Increases Investment in Summer Meal Programs PORTLAND The Maine-based nonprofit, Full Plates Full Potential announced its Summer Meal Emergency Fund grant recipients issued to child nutrition programs across the state, most of which begin summer meal service today. The total amount awarded, $401,545 represents a marked increase compared to the organization’s 2019 summer grant cycle which totaled $77,540. “Since our inception in 2014, Full Plates has been steadily building its granting capacity for each of the various child nutrition programs we support, but COVID-19 has been a complete gamechanger,” according to Anna Korsen who serves as the organization’s director of advocacy & partnerships. “Even in a normal year,” Korsen continued, “summertime is the most difficult season for children experiencing hunger with only about 27% of children accessing meals while school is out.”
At least 80,000 Maine children struggle with hunger and because of the financial ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic, the need has risen rapidly over the past sixteen weeks. In fact, a recent study by Feeding America estimates that child food insecurity in Maine will increase by 45% statewide this year due to economic hardships resulting from the COVID-19 crisis. The essential nature of school meals gained tremendous public awareness in the recent months as schools switched to remote learning, putting nutrition continuity of millions of children nationwide at risk. Summer meals are a continuation of these efforts providing access to proper nutrition during the summer months. Implementation of social distancing recommendations combined with stepped up safety measures have made it far more expensive for child nutrition programs to operate during the pandemic. Everything from packaging, to transportation, increased
food costs due to supply chain issues, and personal protective equipment for staff and volunteers are all costs not usually considered or incurred. While the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reimburses
these programs for food costs and labor at fixed rates, they do not take into account the increased costs associated with operating meal service during this public health emergency.“Without these emergency grants,” Korsen
WS
concluded, “many summer meal sites would be unable to open, meaning children would not be able to access these free nutritious meals over the summer.” All grants are funded through the generous contriSee MEALS page 24...

Rules, details and past winning video entries can be found at https:// shakespeareoxfordfellowship.org/ sof-video-contest.
...VOTE from page 1 funds; Interest rates are currently low, making it a good time to invest. The primary arguments AGAINST this referendum are: Maine already has $1.43 billion in outstanding bond debt that this will add to and it could lead to increased taxes; Residents of more populated areas may not think it’s worth paying for infrastructure in less populated rural areas. Question 2: Transportation This question is whether or not the state should borrow $105 million, matched by $275 million in federal and other funds, for a variety of infrastructure improvements, including roads, bridges, railroads, airports, transit and ports. A YES vote means you are in favor of a $105 million bond to address infrastructure improvements. A NO vote means you do not want Maine to borrow $105 million to address infrastruc-
ture improvements. If voters approve the bond, it means that the state of Maine is allowed to borrow money for the project and has to pay it back over 10 years. This will be $105 million Principal plus $29,150,000 Interest (assumes 5.0% over 10 years) for a total cost of $135,150,000. The primary arguments FOR this referendum are: Maine’s roads and infrastructure are deteriorating; Makes up for some of the shortfall in gas taxes from fuel-efficient vehicles that has left the funds for highway repairs insufficient; Issuing the bond opens up matching funds; Interest rates are currently low, making it a good time to invest. The primary arguments AGAINST this referendum are: Maine already has $1.43 in outstanding bond debt that this will add to and it could lead to increased taxes.

Parade Honors Fr. Fred Morse
WELLS When he walked out the main doors of St. Mary Church in Wells last Wednesday afternoon, Fr. Fred Morse, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Kennebunk and Wells, couldn’t believe his eyes and ears as the large parking lot which sat empty when he arrived in the morning was now filled with rows and rows of parishioners in their cars and the sound of celebratory honking in the air. One by one, over 50 cars drove past Fr. Morse who stood in the walkway in front of the church and happily greeted each parishioner and family participating in the celebration of such a milestone. “We encouraged participants to make signs and posters
and to honk and call out greetings to Fr. Fred. Fr. Agustin (Sebasthiyan, parochial vicar at the parish) led him out the main door and the first car immediately began the parade,” said Mary Colombo, a member of the Holy Spirit Pastoral Council. “The 25th anniversary of a priest’s ordination is something to be cherished and valued.” A basket at the end of the parade route allowed for parishioners to offer gifts and cards to Fr. Morse. Fr. Morse was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Joseph J. Gerry, O.S.B., on June 24, 1995, at St. John Church in Bangor, and since that time, has served in Daigle, Fort Kent, South Portland, Portland, Peaks Island, and
Brunswick, before being appointed pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in July of 2016. In any other year, a celebration reception would have been held to honor Fr. Morse, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the parade seemed a fitting replacement and gesture for a man who has given the Diocese of Portland so much. “This parade makes me feel like one of the high-school graduates,” joked Fr. Morse. “It’s great to see so many familiar faces. Even with masks on!”

BUSINESS & FINANCE PPP Application Deadline Extended to August 8 WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the co-author of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and a member of the Small Business Task Force, announced that the President has signed into law a bill she co-sponsored giving small business owners more time to apply for a PPP loan. The legislation extends the U.S. Small Business Administration’s authority to approve PPP loans through August 8.
Previously, small businesses had until June 30, 2020, to apply for a PPP loan. Approximately $130 billion in PPP funding remains available to assist small businesses and their employees. “The Paycheck Protection Program has been a lifeline to small businesses and their employees during the pandemic. Throughout the country, more than 4.8 million forgivable loans are helping small businesses to stay afloat and send paychecks to their workers. By extending

the application deadline for the PPP, this law will help more small businesses access this vital program and avoid shutting their doors forever and laying off their employees,” said Senator Collins. “I will continue bipartisan negotiations on a bill to allow especially hard-hit businesses to be eligible to receive a second PPP loan.” Last week, Senator Collins spoke on the Senate floor to outline her priorities for the next phase of the Paycheck Protection Program, including allowing employers with fewer than 300 employees that have seen their revenues decline by more than 50 percent apply for a second PPP loan. Since its launch in in early April, the PPP has provided $520 billion in forgivable loans to more than 4.8 million small employers across the nation. According to an ongoing U.S. Census survey, approximately 3 out of every 4 small business respondents report that they have received assistance under the program. In Maine,
nearly 27,000 small employers have received loans totaling more than $2.2 billion, with translates to an average business size of ap-
proximately seven employees. The PPP is helping to sustain nearly 200,000 jobs in Maine alone.

Janet Kyreages, 92 KITTERY – Janet Kyreages passed away June 13, 2020, at Durgin Pines surrounded by her family and friends. On February 28, 1928, in Wakefield, MA, she was born to Arthur and Jessie Grant. The family moved to Oakland, then to York, where they resided. Janet graduated from York High school, worked in the Rollinsford Mills, NH, and also became a nanny. She enjoyed skiing at Garrison Hill and it was there she met the love of her life “Lou” who got sidetracked from snow plowing when he met her! They married July 26, 1953 and she became an Air Force wife, living in six different states and England. Lou was deployed to Korea and Vietnam, serving for a year each. Jan kept him close at heart, as he was an Old Spice man, with a splash of Old Spice on his pillow. Janet enjoyed sewing and making clothes for their daugh-
ters, often taking the challenge of sewing Vogue patterns. She had an eye for color and style. The kitchen was also definitely her domain. She had a love, patience and enjoyment for cooking and baking. Her baked goods were YUM to us all. Her molasses cookies, pies, Christmas fish “chowda”, blueberry muffins, coffee cakes – often those coffee cakes were delivered to her daughters work for a pick-me-up snack! Her apple turnovers made thieves out of us all – Only a few ever made it to those family cookouts! Janet loved her family, grand and cute great-grand children. She loved those cunnin’ babies, and would delight in them all. She was known for being quick to say a prayer if there was an injury, giving assurance things would work out if one has faith. She loved that cottage ocean view, walking the beach with her beach kerchief on her head, and chewing Wrigley’s gum – snap, crackle, pop! Attending the Deerfield Fair was one of Janet’s many favorite family traditions, enjoying those sugar dusted Jumbo doughnuts. She loved heading up the coast to Bar Harbor for the “lobstah” rolls which she emphatically said her system craved. Florida winter trip vacations brought much sunshine, warmth and fun for Lou and her. She enjoyed playing mini golf often making multiple “holes in one” which tickled her and baffled the rest of the family! “Jana” was Lou’s affectionate nickname for her, as were GG and KiKi – the sound of her laugh echoed as she answered to them all. She always had a smile on her face it seemed. Janet, upon rising in the morning was often asked “Tell me something good, Jana” and the reply with a smile was always “Well the suns out” and “The best day eva.” Janet had a living, vital relationship with Jesus Christ which was her source of joy throughout all the happy, precious, tragic or heartbreaking times. One of her THANK YOU ST. JUDE: May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day, by the 9th day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised and done.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Pets with Sick Owners It appears that dogs and cats are not readily infected with SARS-CoV-2 (another name for the Coronovirus). We have little to no evidence that they become ill, and no evidence that those that may be infected spread it to other pets or people. However, out of an abundance of caution and until more is known about this virus, if you are ill with COVID-19 you should restrict contact with pets and other animals, just as you would restrict your contact with other people. When possible, have another member of your household or business take care of feeding and caring for any animals; Make sure you have an emergency kit prepared with at least two weeks’ worth of your pet’s food and medications; If you have a service animal or you must care for your animals, wear a cloth face mask; don’t pet, share food or bedding with, kiss, or hug them; and wash your hands before and after any contact with them. Additional guidance on managing pets in homes where people are sick with COVID-19 is available from the Fund. Together, they estimate that 1.3 million meals will be served to Maine children this summer. Full Plates Full Potential partner with nonprofit advocates, local businesses and restaurants, advocating for policy changes at the state level, granting funds and providing technical assistance to schools. Founded in 2014, the organization hosts year-round events and fundraisers, and invites Maine businesses to the FEED KIDS cause marketing initiative. Learn more at www.fullplates.org.

CDC at www.cdc.gov. With the exception of the single report of illness in a cat in Belgium, which could not be confirmed, there have not been additional reports of pets or other domestic animals becoming ill subsequent to natural exposure to SARS-CoV-2, and there is no reason to think that domestic animals, including pets, in the United States might be a source of the infection. The only case of an animal testing positive for the virus in the United States was a tiger that had a respiratory illness at a zoo in New York City. As such, routine testing of domestic animals for COVID-19 is not being recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association (www.avma.org), CDC, USDA, or the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. Because the situation is ever-evolving, public and animal health officials may decide to test certain animals. In that case, officials will designate a state-appointed veterinarian, USDA-accredited veterinarian, or foreign animal disease diagnostician to collect a sample. Answers to questions frequently asked are available on www.usda.gov. Again, current expert understanding is that COVID-19 is primarily transmitted personto-person. If domestic animals, including dogs or cats, present with respiratory or gastrointestinal signs, veterinarians should test for more common pathogens and conditions first. Accordingly, there is no reason to remove pets from homes where COVID-19 has been identified in members of the household, unless there is risk that the pet itself is not able to be cared for appropriately. ~ News ~ Marshwood HS Interact Members Travel to Tanzania SOUTH BERWICK This service trip to Tanzania (taken prior to COVID-19) will not be forgotten. Led by Marshwood educators Grace Jacobs, Vicki Stewart, and Nina D’Aran, the EF service trip focused on community development and met each of the group’s goals by making connections within the group and with the community members, developing a global perspective, and gaining new knowledge. Each member experienced positive personal growth and it was a life-changing week for everyone involved. The enthusiasm of the seven students could not be suppressed. The student group included: Katie Taran, Maddie Fjeld, Mia Serrano, Stella D’Aran, Eva Therrien, Sophie Lusenhop and Stella Cox. Each member of the group demonstrated perseverance, inclusiveness, open-mindedness and a thirst for knowledge and connections. The team members were
deeply touched by the openhearted welcome and the love shown by the rural community members of Oldonyowas, Tanzania. The group arrived in Tanzania at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro on Valentine’s Day after flying for more than 15 hours. The local leaders and hosts provided the group with many opportunities to meet the people and learn about the local culture. The drive from the airport to the Gilgan Leadership Centre in Arusha was breathtaking with the hills and mountains dotting the horizon. The group was treated to a delicious dinner and then settled in for a restful sleep in comfortable tents. The next morning the exhilarating journey of service and community building began in the village of Oldonyowas where the group would spend the week. Upon arrival, the community greeted the students and teachers with songs, dances, and introductions.
This was the first glimpse of the extraordinary experiences to come. During their stay, students participated in daily work projects, met members of the community, and learned about local and regional issues. They experienced the joys and challenges that their service projects provided and were overwhelmed with the generous and caring support provided by the community. Life in rural Tanzania presents many challenges. Across Tanzania, only 44% of people have access to clean water, and in rural areas, it is estimated to be just 10%. This means that access to water is limited and can also be the source of many water-borne illnesses. Team members carried 5-gallon containers of water from the closest well to the homes where the water was needed. The students were humbled by this difficult task that local women See TRIP page 30...

wood is banned due to the risk of importing exotic insects and diseases that will harm Maine forests. While an invasive pest may spread a few miles on its own in a single year, moving infested wood can spread the same pest hundreds of miles in a single day! The wood may look okay but you cannot often see the pests that are there. They can be in, on or under the bark of firewood or even in the wood itself. Maine campgrounds have wood available so please, buy it where you burn it to protect Maine’s forests.

How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? Since 2016. My dad has been in real estate for over 30 years in Downeast Maine where I grew up. When I left my corporate career in marketing, I talked with my dad and a local friend who is also an agent who supported my coming into the business.
How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? When I retired from the York Middle School, I worked in retail sales and discovered I did well in selling and loved working with the public. Being an independent woman I looked into real estate and here I am 18 years later — still loving what I do!
What energizes you in real estate? Being able to help people find their perfect home or sell a home so they can find one that better fits their needs at that time in their life. Life is always changing – It’s fun to help people/families find what fits them best for each phase of their life. What advice would you give to your teenage self? No matter how much you plan your life out, it will inevitably look different than how you imagined – and that’s ok! One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I’m very honest and real. I pride myself on my integrity and ability to be a real human being with my clients instead of a salesperson. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? Most people might not know I’m VERY involved in my community and have worked for our local food bank/pantry for the last 6 years in roles from Fundraising Chair to, currently, Development Director. My hidden talent – I’ve been a singer since I was 7! Best advice you were ever given? Failure is inevitable, but it’s the only way we’ll ever learn to succeed. So always keep a positive attitude, especially when you fail, because it says a lot about how you’ll handle it.
What advice would you give to your teenage self? Oh those teenage years… If only I could go back in time, I would tell my teenage self to always put family first, value education and lifelong learning, respect yourself and others, always have a plan A and if Plan A doesn’t work, fix it, and rename it Plan B. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I work hard and persevere knowing that my clients trust me to help them with their future plans. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? My artistic side and communication skills. Best advice you were ever given? When it comes to power I was told to remember that “Power isn’t power until you give it away.” Three words friends use to describe you? Honest, loyal, trustworthy… always there in time of need with no questions asked.
Three words friends use to describe you? Driven, genuine, loyal.
Michael McCormack | mbmccormack@icloud.com | 207-590-2598 How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? 16 years. I had purchased a property back in 2002 and was intrigued by the process. Then I had numerous friends who were looking to purchase real estate and asked how the process worked, so I decided to become an agent. What energizes you in real estate? Helping people and making the home-buying process as smooth as possible. What advice would you give to your teenage self? Become a real estate agent sooner! One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? The ability to solve problems. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? I lived in Alaska twice. A lot of people know I play guitar, but I started as a drummer. Three words friends use to describe you? Helpful, friendly, funny.
