WELLS Fire Chief Wayne Vetre, 57, of Wells, passed away on July 5 after a courageous battle with cancer. Vetre became Fire Chief in November of 2016, also serving as Emergency Management Director and Wells Ocean Rescue Director. During his short tenure, he was able to procure three additional fire trucks plus equipment for the department, one additional firefighter, and worked tirelessly to ensure that the residents of Wells had the best in terms of public safety protection. He contributed greatly to the design, build, and
completion of the new Wells Public Safety complex. Vetre was a member of the Maine Fire Chiefs Association and numerous other community associations, including Wells Rotary. Wayne started his firefighting career early as a Junior Explorer in Guilford, CT. He served as a firefighter in East Haven, CT from 1993-2001, and as a firefighter in Guilford during the same time period. In 2001, he served Guilford as Deputy Fire Marshal, Fire Investigator and Pre-Planner, and in 2005 he became Assistant Chief in Guilford, where he served until 2016. As part of his responsi-
bilities as Assistant Chief, Vetre also served as Deputy Fire Marshal and Deputy Emergency Management Director, and successfully procured grants in the amount of $1.5 million for equipment and eight additional firefighters. In addition, he served as Shellfish Warden and Fire Service Instructor. During his career, he earned numerous State of CT and FEMA certifications, awards, and commendations, including a Mayoral Commendation from the town of East Haven for rescue and successful resusSee LOSS page 26...

The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Game has been created to raise money and to help make the public aware of the expert orthopedic and burn care facilities available to children who desperately need this specialized care, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. This East vs. West matchup brings over 150 student athletes and coaches from all over the state together to help produce what is considered the premier high school sporting event held in Maine. All participants
commit to a week long training camp where they make new friends and more importantly learn why we play the game – “Strong legs run… So that weak legs may walk.” The student athletes are high school seniors who have just graduated and are about to enter college. They are nominated to play in this prestigious game by their coaches and selected by a committee from the Maine Athletics Association. Eco-friendly Bedding Designed by Wells Company WELLS A Wells-based company has produced a line of eco-friendly bedding that is not only chemical-free – it also makes it impossible for bedbugs to thrive. Maine-Lee Technology Group’s “Fresh Rest” sheets and pillow cases include a natural antimicrobial that kills human bacteria and thus removes the food source for bedbugs. This also eliminates dust mites. The high-tech textile design – the brainchild of renowned Maine neurosurgeon Dr. Lee Thibodeau – also wicks away moisture and regulates
body temperature. By doing so, the sheets also stay fresher longer, and require washing

The textile’s design features a multidimensional fiber weave that Thibodeau had previously patented when he created MLTG’s first product, a line of durable all-purpose unisex socks called “EZ Glider”. Thibodeau says his life experiences, coupled with his medical knowledge of the body’s systems, have inspired him to create innovative products. For example, he grew up in northern

Maine, where he wrestled with the problem of keeping his feet warm and dry. There was also the problem of slipping in and out of his boots – Thibodeau’s mother placed plastic bread bags over his feet so that he could slide in and out of them more easily. When Thibodeau’s own children struggled with their boots, he got the idea to make a better sock. And while he was at it, he also wanted to create a compression weave that would reduce foot fatigue for people who were on their feet for hours at a time, See BED page 5...

Church Commits to Saving Earth One Step at a Time
YORK Nearly a decade ago, Mary Ross took the first step when she invited the congregation to join her in “prayers to save our precious and fragile earth. She repeats that prayer each Sunday and it has become such an integral part of worship that other church members repeat it in her absence.
Step by step, First Parish Church has been at work reducing our carbon footprint. Early efforts included energy audits, a plan to reduce our energy consumption, and implementation of that plan. Individually and collectively, we made strides to expand recycling efforts. We began to work collaboratively with other groups in the York

DAVID WALKER // OCEAN PARK, ME
THANKS TO OUR CARE, DAVE IS BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS.
David led a healthy and active life before respiratory difficulties slowed him down. He originally thought his chest pains were due to asthma, but when the pain got worse he called his doctor at Southern Maine Health Care for a second opinion and was urged to go to the SMHC Emergency Room. Tests revealed a 90 percent blockage in three out of four areas of his heart. Surgery was scheduled at Maine Medical Center for the next day, and within weeks he was back to living his best life. Compassionate care. Coordinated care. Through MaineHealth you are connected to better.
Imagine a network of hospitals, health care providers, and specialists, built with your needs at the very center. We did – that’s MaineHealth.

Bill to Broaden Membership of Wild Blueberry Commission Becomes Law
AUGUSTA A bill sponsored by Rep. Robert Alley, D-Beals, to give blueberry growers an equal role on the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine was signed into law by Governor Mills recently. The bill was enacted unanimously in both the House and
the Senate. “I had heard a lot of complaints from wild blueberry growers that their business was in trouble,” Alley said. “Last year harvests were down but prices were still low. The growers felt it was important to have more representation, and more
diverse representation, on the Commission to help them get things turned around.”
Currently, the Commission is made up of five processers and three growers. This new

law will change the membership to five growers and five processers. It also calls for more diverse representation among the growers on the Commission, encouraging, but not requiring, growers who are Native American, or organic farmers or produce value-added products. The growers will now have more say in who is nominated to the Committee. “Wild blueberries are an iconic Maine product. They are not only important as an agricultural commodity, but they are important to the culture of Maine, especially in the Downeast communities in my area,” said Alley. “Hopefully changes like this will get the growers the help they need to become profitable again, and keep the wild blueberry industry around for generations.” The measure, LD 145, An Act Regarding the Membership of the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine, will go into effect 90 days after the end of the legislative session. ...BOWL from page 1

The EZ Glider, which will be available in mid-September, is frictionless, lightweight, keeps feet warm and dry, includes a model with a compression weave, and – thanks to the natural antimicrobial – remains odor-free for up to 10 uses. (FMI, visit www.ezglidersocks.com.) The Fresh Rest bedding line is unique in its ability to prevent bedbugs by eliminating their food source – human bacteria. The natural antimicrobial in the bedding also eliminates dust mites, a source of allergens for many people. Eliminating bacteria reduces odor, which means the bedding requires less frequent washing – an eco-friendly quality. Also distinctive is the patent-pending advanced multidimensional textile weave that wicks away moistures and regulates body temperature. The design is an alternative to chemicals, hard metals and waxes used by some manufacturers for moisture control and temperature regulation. “Chemicals leach into a person’s body at night, and are especially unsafe for infants,” says Bill Kimball, MLTG’s senior vice-president of operations. Fresh Rest sheets do not have a thread count, like traditional sheets. They were made to be soft to the touch, similar to high-thread count sheets. They come in standard sizes, and retail between $89 -$129. Kimball said in the near future Fresh Rest will include a line of sheets sized for over-the-road trucker cabs, pleasure boats, and RVs. Long-lasting freshness is especially appreciated in these settings, Kimball notes. Fresh Rest products will be available at www.freshrestbedding.com.

The company is currently looking into basing their product manufacturing in Maine. (It is currently done overseas.) “We want to be a totally Maine-based company, in time,” Kimball says. 79, Chapter 79 Legion Riders (members of the American Legion who are motorcycle enthusiasts) and the House of Hope staff, a Missing Man Table was put on permanent display in the House of Hope, complete with a Chair of Honor. A Missing Man Table, also known as a Fallen Comrade Table, is a ceremony and memorial in honor of fallen, missing or imprisoned service members. The table is set for one with an empty chair, a Chair of Honor that was made and donated by Hussey Seating Company of North Berwick. At the dedication ceremony, Jeff Saucier, Territory Sales Manager, indicated that Hussey Seating began participating in the POW/MIA Chair of Honor program in 2013 and has since placed over 500 of these chairs in some of the world’s biggest venues and in community buildings across the United States. Following an introduction by Chapter 79 Director Gary Branyen, a solemn dedication was conducted by Paul Leblanc from Rolling Thunder Maine Chapter 1 in front of the Missing Man Table. LeBlanc reverently recited from memory the name, rank, service, date lost and home town of each of the thirteen Maine veterans who never returned home as a brass bell was

sounded after each name. This initiative was truly a team effort, with American Legion members donating a table (Lynne Rendell) and Legion Rider Dennis Ouellette, who painstakingly refinished the table and sourced the era-specific table cloth and table settings, and Ron Vigue, for arranging the donation of the Chair of Honor built and donated by Hussey Seating Company, with the space provided and prepared by House of Hope Executive Director Mike Hennessy and his staff and other members of the Chapter 79 Legion riders. The display now serves as a permanent reminder to all who enter the House of Hope that we may always remain mindful that “Hope changes everythingâ€?. WES fourth grade student Liv DiDomenicantonio with her drawing, “Water by the Sunset”.
OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Barn Gallery held its 41st consecutive Student Art Show in May exhibiting a variety of student artwork from several area schools. Over three days, beginning with a reception, about 550 people viewed the exhibit consisting of kindergarten through 12thgrade art. “It’s a great opportunity for students to have their work not only on display but on display in a professional gallery so that they can bring their families here to see their work with pride,” commented Wells High School art teacher Emily Knight. Although several schools often participate, President of the Ogunquit Arts Collaborative Deidre O’Flaherty indicated that the schools from the York School Department and the Wells-Ogunquit CSD have been mainstay participants or “pillars” of the show for decades. This year, the four art teachers from the Wells-Ogunquit CSD selected and displayed a combination of 225 plus selections including drawings, paint-
ings, photographs, paper Mache masks, mixed media perspective artworks, and sculptures. O’Flaherty indicated that the show can provide insight and inspiration for students. She noted that the artwork is purposely “not” grouped by school in the display so that students have to wander the exhibit to find their work and, in so doing, see and experience what students from other schools are creating. O’Flaherty also pointed out that this show often provides a “first time” visit to an art gallery for many of the students and parents who attend. Towards the end of opening day, retiring Wells High School art teacher Vanessa White-Capelluti was recognized by three of her teaching peers for her long-time dedication to the show. A former student and colleague of White-Capelluti’s, Emily Knight, spoke briefly and presented White-Capelluti with a bouquet of flowers. Also honoring White-Capelluti was Wells Elementary School art teacher Jenna Larochelle-Parry, and Wells Junior High School art teacher Shannon Petrie.

Leavitt Theatre to Mark Apollo 11 Anniversary with Vintage Lunar Voyage Masterpiece public. Tickets are $10 per person, general admission. The screening will feature live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis. “We felt it was worth marking this important milestone by sampling visions of space travel before the Apollo program put mankind on the moon,” said Max Clayton of the Leavitt Theatre. “And what better way to do that than go back to the silent era and ‘Woman in the Moon,’ an epic fantasy about the German space program that never happened.”
OGUNQUIT A sci-fi adventure hailed as the first feature film to depict realistic space travel will be screened at the Leavitt Theatre in honor of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. ‘Woman in the Moon’ (1929), directed by German filmmaker Fritz Lang (‘Metropolis,’ 1927), will be shown with live music on Wednesday, July 17 at 7 p.m. at the Leavitt Fine Arts Theatre. The rarely seen full-length version of ‘Woman in the Moon’ follows an intrepid band of space pioneers as they attempt mankind’s first voyage to the lunar surface, where they hope to find deposits of gold. The film, made with German rocket experts as technical advisers, anticipated many of the techniques used by NASA for the Apollo moon launch program 40 years later. For example, a multi-stage rocket is employed to escape Earth’s gravity, and a separate capsule is used to reach the lunar surface. The film is also noted for introducing the idea of a dramatic “countdown” prior to launch, which later became standard procedure in actual space flight. Critics regard the film’s extended launch sequence as a masterpiece of editing and dramatic tension. But ‘Woman in the Moon,’ with its melodramatic plot, also stands as the forerunner of many sci-fi soap opera elements that quickly became clichés: the brilliant but misunderstood professor; a love triangle involving a
female scientist and her two male crewmates; a plucky young boy who yearns to join the expedition; fistfights and gunfire and treachery on the lunar surface.

The show will run from July 12 through August 4. Works by Fellows are in watercolor with clean lines and vivid colors. Scenes range from landscapes to still-lifes, to travel-inspired work, both large and small. After retirement, he continued his art education at institutions like Sanctuary Arts in Eliot, and Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk. He is currently a member of the Kittery Art Association, and a member of the York Hospital Board, blending his two passions during his “second act.” The Brick Store Museum is located at 117 Main Street, Kennebunk. Raw and Powerful Jazz Musical Cabaret to Open at the Ogunquit Playhouse OGUNQUIT Come to the Cabaret, your table’s waiting! Decadent nightlife meets dangerous times at Berlin’s alluring Kit Kat Klub in the iconic Broadway musical Cabaret, on stage July 17 through August 10. Set in the cabaret underworld on the eve of Hitler’s rise to power, the Ogunquit production is based on the searing Sam Mendes and Rob Mar-
shall musical recently revived on Broadway and is staged by BT McNicholl, who directed the Playhouse production of Cabaret back in 2006. This unforgettable musical stars stage and screen actors Randy Harrison as the Emcee and Kate Shindle as Sally Bowles. Kenya Hall Band to Perform WELLS The Kenya Hall Band will perform on Saturday, July 13 at the Hope Hobbs Gazebo in Harbor Park. Kenya’s vocals are a rare blend of soul and funk that leaves the audience better for having heard her sing. The free concert runs 6:30-8:30 p.m. and is open to the public (in case of rain, the site is the Wells Junior High gym on Route 1). Based out of Portland, Kenya Hall has shared stages with incredible local and national acts such as The Roots, Dr. John, Lettuce, Jaw Gems, Rustic Overtones, Adam Deitch, Jon Fishman, Nigel Hall, Shemekia Copeland, and Fred Wesley. As one-of-a-kind as it gets, Kenya’s musical artistry weaves together indomitable vocals with a fierce blend of soul and funk delivered with a rare energy that leaves every audience she sings to better for having been a part of it. Drawing her writing and performing influences from Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and Sharon Jones, Kenya is not only relevant in what she says, but poignant in how she communicates it. Leaning heavily on Soul, Hip Hop, Funk, and the seed of what makes a rock and roll artist — Kenya is here to deeply inspire and elevate the world around her. There is plenty of free
parking or take the Wells Trolley directly to the park. Admission is free (contributions accepted), the Knights of Columbus sells refreshments, and there is abundant park bench type seating. The Ogunquit production features the Broadway set based on the original design by Robert Brill and the Broadway costumes by William Ivey Long. Cabaret tells the story of Cliff Bradshaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, who falls in love with cabaret singer Sally Bowles. Their romance sizzles amid the back room culture of the cabaret and the tumultuous atmosphere of pre-Nazi Germany. Cabaret is a raw and powerful jazz musical that explores the dark life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Health & Fitness YMS Sixth Grade Students Raise Over $450 for York Food Pantry YORK In May, students in Michael Harris’ sixth grade science class spent their morning at the Old York Garden Club plant sale. Since early April, they had been growing tomatoes from seed in their classroom to sell at the annual club sale. A fundraiser for the York Food Pantry, the students raised more than $450 and had the opportunity to present the check to Food Pantry Director Maureen Monson.
Students also participated in an interactive session about food insecurity that included videos, discussion, games, and multi-media tools. They then had the chance to get their hands dirty by planting the tomatoes and, over a period of six weeks, watch them grow. To prepare for the sale, students put together posters with educational information about food insecurity and key ways to help. The students sold over 120 plants. “My students were very

This bill is modeled after a Vermont law that passed last year. A bill from President Jackson – LD 1499, “An Act To Establish the Maine Prescription Drug Affordability Board” – would create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board. This board would determine prescription drug spending targets for public entities based on a 10-year rolling average, accounting for inflation with spending reductions,
and would provide methods for achieving lower prescription costs through measures such as bulk purchasing, leveraging multi-state purchasing, or negotiating specific rebate amounts. A bill from Asst. excited to be involved in this service learning project. Discovering that they were not just raising money or sponsoring a food drive, but working to educate our community about food insecurity made this project special,” said Harris. “The students did a fantastic job describing the project to the general public and educating the public on how they can help address food insecurity in our community.” “We are really excited to be part of this project,” said Sue Luby, President of Old York Garden Club. “It is part of our mission as a club to help stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, and hosting the kids’ tomato fundraiser at our annual plant sale brought a whole new energy to the event. Connecting to youth in our community is a way to share our club’s knowledge of horticulture and the joy that gardening can bring to people of all ages.” The club donated planting supplies and gardening expertise during the duration of the project. “YCSA is so happy to have support from the students in town. Learning how to give back at a young age will be with them forever,” said Michelle Surdoval, YCSA Executive Director.

Renewable Energy & Climate Change Bills Signed STATEWIDE Standing in front of a solar array and joined by lawmakers and renewable energy supporters, Governor Janet Mills recently signed into law three major pieces of bipartisan legislation that will help usher in renewable energy in Maine, create clean energy jobs, and fight climate change. The bills establish in law the Governor’s proposed Maine Climate Council, which is charged with developing action plans to reduce Maine greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050; an increase in Maine’s Renewable Portfolio Standard from 40 percent today to 80 percent by 2030 and a goal of 100 renewable energy by 2050; the creation of new incentives for energy-efficient heating; and the institution of new solar incentive programs. “With the signing of these bills, Maine is ushering in a new era of clean energy and climate leadership,” said Governor Janet Mills. “The Maine Climate Council will develop comprehensive action
plans to meet our ambitious emissions reductions goals and the renewable energy legislation will spur clean energy development and investments that will increase production of homegrown, renewable energy and create good paying jobs for the people of Maine. Maine is onceagain leading on clean energy.” The bills signed into law today will significantly increase the amount of renewable energy in Maine, reduce emissions and support clean energy job growth: LD 1679 An Act To Promote Clean Energy Jobs and To Establish the Maine Climate Council, a Governor’s bill sponsored by Senator David Woodsome, will establish the Maine Climate Council that is charged with leading Maine’s efforts to reduce Maine’s Greenhouse Gas emissions by 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and at least 80 percent by 2050. The Council will develop the action plans to meet the state’s greenhouse gas reduction goals, to promote jobs and economic benefits for Maine people in the transition to a lower carbon economy, and to support the climate resiliency of Maine’s communities. Mills proposed establishing the Maine Climate Councilin April. “I am honored to have sponsored LD 1679...it has been in the making for several years and finally found a Champion in Governor Mills,” said Sen. Woodsome, R-York. “There is still much work to be done to make this effort comprehensive and economically effective. I look forward to achieving this goal.” LD 1494 An Act To Reform Maine’s Renewable Portfolio Standard, sponsored by Senator Eloise Vitelli, increases Maine’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) to achieve 80 percent renewable energy by 2030, up from 40 percent today and a goal of 100% by 2050. In addition, the bill requires the Public Utilities Commission to procure longterm contracts for new clean energy generation, which may be paired with advanced energy storage. LD 1494 also requires the creation of a new thermal portfolio standard to incentivize efficient heating and cooling installations, contains several cost containment mechanisms including a $50 cap on alternative compliance payments, and requires renewable energy policy studies to be conducted in conjunction with other planning efforts. This bill gives Maine one of most ambitious RPS programs in the country. L.D. 1711 An Act To Promote Solar Energy Projects and
Distributed Generation Resources in Maine, sponsored by Senator Dana Dow, will incentivize at least 375 megawatts (MW) of new distributed generation in Maine, which is expected to be primarily solar photovoltaic (PV) development for projects under 5 MW. The bill creates two separate but complimentary incentives, one for commercial and institutional customers and another for community shared projects, with prices that are set competitively and declining in subsequent procurements. The bill also removes the net energy billing account and size cap; requires that community shared

5-Bubble Review! from TripAdvisor A VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE! Just back from Ogunquit on the busiest weekend of the year, our mistake. Found Bintliff’s by accident. It proved to be a pleasant surprise. We sat at the bar where we were made to feel right at home by the bartender. Food was very good and reasonable. Bar service was excellent and entertaining. We enjoyed it so much we went back the next night. Reservations Recommended for Dinner Only

KENNEBUNK Celebrate with fellow animal lovers at Woofstock: Food and Beer Festival, Saturday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Animal Welfare Society on Holland Road in West Kennebunk. This FREE festival includes brews, food, games, bounce houses, dog agility, people obstacle course and more, all with a groovy 60s vibe. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Effie, a lovely black and white six-year-old kitty who is blind but you’d never know it. Her eyes are large and lovely, and don’t look injured. Her owner thinks she can see shadows. Relocating a blind kitty is a real stresser. She has to learn her way around, so our volunteers are making things as easy for her as possible. She’s adapting very well and is a happy kitty. We want to find her a great home ASAP so her life and surroundings will be stable. Effie will be happiest in a calm environment, where people are considerate of her inability to see. Talking to Effie before touching her is important, so she won’t be startled. Her sense of hearing seems stronger to make up for her loss of site, so talking and humming are comforting. They let her know you’re there with her and she has companionship. Effie is a little on the chubby side, so exercise will be very important. So how do you play with a blind kitty? Toys that crinkle, squeak or chirp are best.
She still likes to play, so finding new games for her will be lots of fun for you both. A cat tree to climb for exercise will benefit her, since her blindness means she may run less. Once Effie learns her surroundings, you’ll be amazed at how well she gets around. She’s perfectly capable of living a happy and normal life. Caring for her is no harder than any other kitty. You’ll still want to brush her, play with her,

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I don’t know how it happened, but whenever I open up MS Word, an old letter pops up. I don’t know how to delete it as I have searched for a delete feature among the toolbars but haven’t found one. I have tried to delete all of the words on the document and save it that way, but that only makes me save it as another document. I can bring up a blank document, but that only comes up a second document. I want it back the way it was with a blank document as document 1. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this letter and back to the original default blank document? Thanks, Martin Dear Martin, It sounds like you have saved your old letter as the default template in Word. Fortunately,
the solution is fairly easy. All you have to do is find the normal.dot (or normal.dotm depending on what version of Word you are using) file and delete it. After you delete the normal.dot file, Word will automatically create a new, blank document template the next time you open it. What is the Normal.dot word template? It is the template that Word uses for a new document every time you start the program. The powerful thing about this document is that you can customize the template so that Word opens a new document with the formatting that you want. Occasionally though, someone will accidentally save a current document as the normal.dotm template and then every time they open a new Word document their old document will appear. The only hard part here, is finding the template.

If you are using headphones, be careful that you don’t damage your ears when a regular volume video plays really loudly. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady, Is there any way to turn up the volume more on my laptop? When I go to play some videos from Facebook, the volume is up high on the videos and the volume on my laptop is as high as it will go but I still have problems hearing it well. Is there any way I can make it louder? Thank you, Ruth

Dear Ruth, If the volume on the video and the volume on your laptop are both turned all the way up, and you still can’t hear the video, you will have to look at ways outside of your laptop to increase the volume. Remember that you have to hold down the Alt key while typing in the numbers, and you must use the number keypad on the right of your keyboard, this will not work with the row of numbers at the top of your keyboard. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a router connected to my computer in my basement and an extender connected to the router. The extender is on a long cable and placed elsewhere in the basement close to an outside wall as close as I can get it to where my daughter uses her laptop in a studio apartment close to my house . (Her laptop is perhaps 50 feet in a straight line from the extender.) She not infrequently has trouble accessing the internet; sometimes she pushes the reset buttons on the router and the extender and that corrects the problem; sometimes not. My question is: do routers and extenders come in different “strengths and would a “stronger router and/or extender likely solve this problem? Thank you very much, Henry Dear Henry, Yes, routers and extenders do come in different strengths, and that is something you can try, but first, I would try a less expensive remedy. When you set up a wi-fi router and/or extender the signal covers an area that is kind of shaped like an umbrella. Having your extender in the basement can limit the reach of the signal for a couple of reasons. First the signal has to go through thick basement walls, and secondly it is not high enough to give you good coverage. Moving your router or extender to a higher level in your house will give you a better range, so try moving them higher in your house before you go out and purchase a stronger one. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Local Hannaford Receives Appreciation Award NORTH BERWICK In May, the North Berwick Parks & Recreation Department and the North Berwick American Legion Post 87 along with the Ladies Auxiliary presented the North Berwick Hannaford Store a plaque in appreciation for their generosity in supporting the Mill Field Festival for the past few years. Presenting the plaque is Don Beaupre, American Legion Post Commander, and Kristie Michaud, Parks & Recreation Director. Accepting the plaque is Gary Nadeau, Hannaford Store Manager. Also present during the
presentation were some of the members of the American Legion Post and ladies Auxiliary, and Assistant Store Managers. Post Commander Beaupre stated the North Berwick Hannaford Store is a big supporter of the community especially during the
Mill Field Festival. Commander Beaupre explained that presenting this plaque at this time would be less disruptive to the store operation instead of the busy time in the August time frame, when the 2019 Mill Field Festival will be held on Saturday, August 17.

Hospice of Southern Maine Announces New Board Appointment and Promotion SCARBOROUGH Hospice of Southern Maine welcomes Frank McGinty to its Board of Directors; announces promotion of Heidi Farber. Frank McGinty has worked as a consultant to MaineHealth and its member organizations since 2015, where he was previously Executive Vice President & Treasurer for 12 years. Prior to joining MaineHealth’s senior management team, McGinty was an executive of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine for eleven years. He has served as a Trustee of a number of charitable organizations during the past thirty years. McGinty was the Chairman of Community Health Services’ Board in 1999 when the home care
Celebration of Learning: Reach for Your Dreams at YACE YORK On the night of June 6, the York Adult and Community Education (YACE) held their annual Celebration of Learning, a ceremony that commemorates the achievements of adult learning in the many different programs offered by YACE, such as college prep, computer classes, singing and music, arts and exercise, and professional certification courses. It was a beautiful night, filled with the pride of the learners as they thanked their supporters and families for accompanying them throughout their academic journey. The students and staff of the YACE program spoke on reaching for dreams, and the hard work and dedication of both students and staff was clearly displayed. According to high school graduate Jacob Keene, who had struggled with the traditional form of schooling, the program gave him the ability to further his education after “giving up on school. “Now I have a foundation upon which I can build my future, said Jacob. Past graduate Caedryn Talley shared her inspiring story of how family illness and loss, compounded by her own struggles with anxiety and depression, caused her to withdraw from society and school, and how YACE helped her finish high school as well as continued support during her freshman year at Nichols College. “I’m a completely different person. I’m working toward my MBA and have enjoyed this year.
In addition to honoring those graduating high school, the celebration included the ESL Perseverance Award, certificates to those who have passed the CNA and BHP classes, and showcased the talent of singers from the Singing Beyond the Shower enrichment class. Professional voice-over artist Jenn Bogard shared her story of how YACE helped her reach her dream of voice acting. “Then the magic began. The magic of believing I could be a voice actor. As a teacher of 20 years, I always told my students to follow their dreams. Now here I was, having a spark of a dream, myself! So many ‘thank yous’ to York Adult and Community Education for showing me the way to dream big. Closing out the ceremony was school board member Dave Herbein with a commendation to the graduates on their hard work and encouragement to continue towards their dreams. As Lisa Robertson, director of YACE, said when quoted C.S. Lewis in her graduation address, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. Story written by YACE Staff Writer Sophie Robertson.

agency decided to become one of MaineHealth’s first member organizations. He represented MaineHealth on the Maine State Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors for more than a decade and was the first representative of a charitable organization elected to lead
that Board. Heidi Farber was recently promoted to Development and Outreach Director at Hospice of Southern Maine. Farber has been with the organization for four years, with 15 years prior experience in nonprofit management and fundraising.
STATEWIDE State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, the largest auto insurer in the nation, will cut its rates in Maine for the second year in a row. As a result, its overall personal auto rate will drop by 6.5 percent. The total state-wide expected impact for State Farm Mutual by this rate decrease in Maine will be approximately $5.9 million. “We’re always evaluating how we can best serve our customers and are very pleased to be

able to offer this rate decrease in Maine, said State Farm Senior Vice President Chris Schell. “Lower than expected expenses and losses were important factors, among many, that supported our decision to make this rate change. Overall changes in premiums for individual motorists will vary depending on the specific details of an individual customer’s policy and chosen coverages. The effective date for new and renewal business is June 10. Maine customers with questions can contact their local State Farm agent. Visit www. statefarm.com to find the agent near you.

In total, Secretary Ross honored 48 U.S. companies with the President’s “E” Award, the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. “Maine Coast has demonstrated a sustained commitment to export expansion. The E Awards Committee was very impressed with Maine Coast’s efforts to sustain exports by opening new markets to lessen

the impact of increased foreign tariffs in some of the company’s existing markets. The company’s investment in logistics facilities and processes vital to further development of its export business was also particularly notable. Maine Coast’s achievements have undoubtedly contributed to national export expansion efforts that support the U.S. economy and create American jobs,” wrote Ross in his congratulatory letter to the company, a global distributor of North Atlantic live lobster headquartered in York. Jeff Porter, Director of the Maine US Export Assistance Center said, “Maine Coast is a
leader in exports for the State of Maine. The U.S. Commercial Service has worked with many Maine companies and is pleased that a leader in the lobster export business has been recognized nationally.” In 2018, U.S. exports were the highest on record with U.S. services at $821.1 billion and U.S. exports of goods reaching $1.7 trillion, demonstrating how American private enterprise cannot only survive, but thrive, in the international market.
