Toll Plaza Fight Comes to an End

Rendering of the Open Road Tolling Plaza at mile 8.8. (Image courtesy of www.maineturnpike.com)

YORK After 10+ years of review and debate, construction of a new high-speed tolling plaza in York will now move ahead. The Board of Selectmen decided not to appeal a recent court ruling upholding the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s July 5 decision to grant a permit for the new toll

plaza in York. According to the Maine Turnpike Authority’s website the project is fully designed, funded, and ready to break ground. Further stating that the project has received all required permits from federal and state environmental agencies after they determined that the proposed plaza at Mile 8.8 has only minimal en-

vironmental impacts and is the least environmentally damaging practicable alternative. The 3-year, $40 million project is expected to begin this fall after review of competitive bids for construction. thors Joy Reed and Leanna Renee Hieber, and attend presentations on Steampunk fashion and historical fantasy writing. A Maker Station offers make-your-own jewelry. Also offered this year is a glimpse at a Tea Duel, and how-to corset fittings. Not sure what “Steampunk” is? It’s the perfect marriage between history and future – a view of the world if Victorian aesthetics and steam power were in existence in modern day. Much like the design of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or Sherlock Holmes, Steampunk is a Victorian view of the future. The Steampunk Fair is the zaniest event of the year – don’t miss it! Attendees are encouraged to come in costume, or purchase

one at the fair. Admission to the fair is $5 per person, $20 for museum members. Admission to the Steampunk High Tea is $30, with free admission to the Fair. Over twenty-five vendors are featured with crafts and

artwork priced from $5 to $500, with a variety of work presented, such as jewelry, lamps, leatherwork, perfume, antiques, lace and clothing. Food will be available for purchase. More information, including a list of vendors, a performance

schedule, and food and beverage offerings, is available on the Museum’s website, www. brickstoremuseum.org. Those interested in being a vendor or performer at the fair are welcome to contact the Museum at info@brickstoremuseum.org.

Support for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Signed into Law WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senate Aging Committee Chairman Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ranking Member Bob Casey (D-PA) applauded the signing of the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act (S. 1091), legislation they authored that will create a onestop-shop of resources to support grandparents raising grandchildren. U.S. Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Peter King (R-NY) introduced companion legislation in the House. Approximately 2.6 million children are being raised by their grandparents or other relatives and experts say this number is rising as the opioid epidemic devastates communities across the country. Senators Collins and Casey introduced the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act in the Senate in May 2017 after an Aging Committee hearing during which witnesses testified about the need for grandparents to have easy access to information about resources available to assist them. “Throughout history, grandparents have stepped in to provide safe and secure homes to their grandchildren, replacing traumatic pasts with loving and hopeful futures. tion, grandparents are increasingly coming to the rescue and assuming this role. It is essential that we do all that we can to help these families, said Senator Collins. “Our legislation will help ensure that grandparents who have taken on this caretaker role have access to the resources they need. “I am pleased that the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act has been signed into law. This law will provide grandparents in Pennsylvania, and across the nation, with easy access to helpful resources, said Senator Casey. “These grandparents, some of which have stepped in to raise their grandchildren due to the opioid crisis, are faced with unique challenges such as delaying retirement, bridging the generational divide, and working through the court system to secure custody. I look forward to the Administration swiftly convening the advisory council created under this legislation so grandparents can access the supports they need. The Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act has received support from 40 older adult and child advocacy groups including AARP, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Generations United.

~ News ~ Eighth Grader Receives Award of Appreciation For Volunteerism

WELLS On June 18, Wells Junior High School eighth grade student Sarah Shackford was recognized by her school for volunteer service to the school’s Bridges Program where she assists staff and special education students with disabilities. This award was also in recognition of her adherence to the school’s core values. Presenting a “Certificate of Appreciation” to Shackford was WJHS Principal Robert Griffin. Others present were Shackford’s parents, Pamela and Dennis Shackford. “She’s put four years of

volunteer service in helping with the Bridges program,” said Dennis Shackford, “…anything they’ve asked her, she’s done.” He indicated that his daughter is a self-starter and described her as a “compassionate girl” pointing out, for example, that she goes on field trips with Bridges students and helps those that need help adjusting to the bus ride. Pam Shackford indicated that Sarah’s volunteerism and appreciation of core values goes back to her elementary school days. Both parents believe Sarah will continue volunteering in the Bridges Program at Wells High

School in the fall. Mrs. Shackford noted that Sarah has also volunteered with classmates at Avita in Wells where she serves lunch to residents and assists with some administrative tasks. Sarah Shackford indicated that she was quite surprised at receiving this recognition. “I had no idea that this was going to happen,” she said. “I loved the opportunity and I am so blessed that everybody loves me.” “Sarah’s calm presence puts the students at ease in the Bridges room,” commented Special Education teacher Lauren Rivera. “She is always willing to help out in any way possible. She truly makes a better day for all that come into contact with her.” “The Bridges program is for students with very significant disabilities…who are not able to

Brick Store Museum Premieres 1968 Exhibition KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, announces the opening of its innovative summer exhibition, 1968. The exhibit focuses on the year’s events, many of which contributed to 1968 being called “the year that changed the world.” The exhibition is sponsored by the Captain Lord Mansion, and will run through November 2018. Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to share their own experiences from the 1960s, to contribute to the knowledge of the mid-20th Century collected at the Museum. Music of the period fills the exhibition with familiar sounds as photos of local and national events help to inspire memory. The purpose of the Museum’s 1968 exhibition is not solely to be a history display, but an active collection point for recent history that is still very much alive. Sharing your history at the Museum will help future generations learn how people in the 1960s lived their lives. Topics covered in the exhibition include family life, Vietnam, protests and riots, civil rights, and the women’s movement. If you have stories to share, or wish to see what others have shared, visit the exhibition before it closes in November! Special programming to See EXHIBIT page 5...

~ Ask The Computer Lady & Library News ~

Dear Computer Lady, How do I password protect folders in windows 10? I enjoy reading your newsletters and have combed your website but I cannot figure out how to do this. Thank you for your help, David Dear David, Password protection is not a feature that is included with Windows 10, but there are a couple of work around’s that might help you. 1. You could compress (zip) the folder you want to protect, then set a password for the zipped folder. You would have to have a compression program installed on your computer that includes the ability to set a password on your compressed folder. 2. You could use Windows to encrypt your folder and it’s contents. Once encrypted, the folder can only be opened when you (or anyone else) are logged into your Windows account. There is no password to remember, but if your computer crashes and you can’t log into your account for any reason, the contents of the folder could be lost forever. 3. There are third party programs online that allow you to password protect folders. I have not used any of them so I can’t give you a recommendation. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Something is driving me bananas. I have a fairly new

Lenovo Desktop computer with Windows 10. My email comes through Gmail. All of a sudden when I open something I get this popup add that comes up sometimes in the middle of the page, sometimes off to the side, but VERY annoying. Is this because of Gmail, my computer or what? I will change email if that is the case, even though it is a hassle with everything involved. I really trust your responses. You are very smart! P.S. My pop up blocker is turned on. Thanks, Ron Dear Ron, I use Gmail every day, and I don’t get any ads popping up anywhere on the page, so I don’t think it is your Gmail. Based on the large numbers of computers that I clean out for my customers, I would say that you have some sort of advertising malware installed on your computer. It might have come with your computer, or, more likely it got downloaded with another program that you installed on your computer. One of the services that I provide is to remove what is called, “bloatware from new computers. This is software that you probably don’t want on your computer, but the manufacturer gets a premium for installing it on all new computers. I also spend quite a bit of time removing unwanted programs for people that they downloaded with a program that they did

want. These are referred to as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) and all they do is try to get you to buy things that you don’t really need. Once you get rid of these PUPs and bloatware, you should find that you don’t even need your pop-up blocker any more. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am trying to import my favorites from internet explorer to edge but I have been trying for 2 weeks and I can’t figure it out. I’ve tried all the directions on the computer but i still have no luck. Can you please help me, I hate to bother you because I know you are very busy but you are also everybody’s favorite. Thank you so very much, Gladys Dear Gladys, Here are the directions for importing your favorites from Internet Explorer into Edge: 1. Open Edge and click on the three small dots located in the upper- right corner just under the X that you close the window with. 2. In the drop-down menu, click on “Settings. 3. In the settings menu, you will see a section that says, “Import Favorites and other info. Click on “Import from another browser. 4. Under, “Import your info, make sure “Internet Explorer is selected, then click on the “Import button. 5. The import will happen automatically and when it is done, you will be able to find your favorites in a folder labeled, “Imported from Internet Explorer. If this doesn’t work for you, then I would need to take a look at the computer to figure out what is wrong with it. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, If a full screen message pops up that says Firefox requires a manual update is this legitimate? It’s happened twice but I haven’t done anything. Thank you, Carolyn Dear Carolyn,

Wood-Fired Ceramic Sculpture and Wallwork

YORK Chases Garage: Artist Studios & Gallery, 16 Main Street, York invite the public to see a new exhibit, Earth + Fire; a collection of wood-fired ceramic sculpture and wallwork created by friends and partners, Belinda Bodnar and Eric Maglio. This exhibit will be shown July 21 through September 29. An opening reception with refreshments will be held on Saturday, July 21 starting at 4 p.m. Firing a kiln using wood is an intensive process that can yield breathtaking surfaces. When used as a fuel, wood leaves behind ash, which travels through the kiln and adheres to clay leaving crystalline drips, flecks and earthy flashing. Both Bodnar’s and Maglio’s work emerge beneath these effects. Keeping the firing process in mind while creating their work, both artists build their

sculptures in ways that will react to the movement of material in the kiln. At the forefront of their making is an ebb and flow between their voice and that of their material. “...with a loose concept of the finished work, [I] arrive at an object that has found its own rhythm. [This] creates an element of surprise that keeps the process active

and engaging, Maglio states of his sculptural buildings. Born out of slabs of clay serving as floor plans, his imagined architecture investigates, what does construction say of it’s creator? Bodnar also uses the creation process to contemplate life’s larger questions. She finds “the physicality of wedging, rolling, pinching and constructing is meditative. While searching for figures, human and otherwise in her forms, she “expresses the questions of the connections of life and death, hope, peace, loneliness, love and spirit. Chases’ Gallery is free and open to the public during business hours or by chance or appointment. Actors “From Away” Introduced to Maine BERWICK Summer stock theater gives actors a chance to perform and entertain. Sometimes it also gives them an introduction to a whole new part of the country. “It’s more farmland and a lot more open space. quiet and peaceful,” said Stephen James Potter, 24 of New York City, who is appearing as a featured dancer in “All Shook Up,” at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. “I’m pretty sure there are no barn theaters in Alabama,” said Teyonna Johnson, 21 of Troy, AL., who had never been to New England before. Performing in the barn “feels more homey,” said Potter. “It creates a different kind of environment, more focused on the cast and performance rather than on a big broadway production.”

Rod Stewart Is Back! Sat. August 4th 7PM Rod Stewart’s Greatest Hits! The cast of “All Shook Up,” opening this week at Hackmatack, includes many newcomers to the Berwick stage, and several who have never been to Maine. For Johnson, a recent college graduate who is playing the part of Lorraine, being in northern New England also means being African American surrounded by almost exclusively white people. “It’s very noticeable,” she said. “This is a very small town with mostly white people.”

Opening Thursday, July 12 in the Little Gallery, Bill Viola: The Fall Into Paradise is a digital cinema installation that renders the human experience in a dramatic wash of water, light, and sound. “Moose” by Lois Dodd, 1958, oil on linen (@Loise Dodd, courtesy Alexandre Gallery, New York)

Maine and its presentation – immediately next to the sea – promises a compelling and profound experience. Lois Dodd: Drawings and Paintings opens in the Sculpture Gallery on Saturday, July 14. Dodd belongs to an influential circle of painters that began congregating in Maine in the

1950s, including Fairfield Porter, Rackstraw Downes, Alex Katz, Yvonne Jacquette, and Neil Welliver. Dodd’s determined explorations of the American scene include observational renderings, landscapes, still lifes, and figurative works, each in a voice of her own making. This exhibition assembles drawings and paintings spanning seven decades in celebration of the remarkable contributions of this beloved American artist. Furthering the museum’s representation of the visual arts and literature, Boundaries, opening Saturday, July 14 in the Long Gallery, is a collaborative visual literacy project between Presidential Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco and contemporary landscape photographer Jacob Bond

Hessler. Blanco’s poems and Hessler’s photographs together investigate the visible and the invisible boundaries of race, gender, class, and ethnicity in the American experience. Both artists will participate in a Totally Tuesday Talk on August 14. Richard Blanco will also read poetry at OMAA on Sunday, July 22 to open the museum’s inaugural Artists and Writers By the Sea series. Learn more at www.ogunquitmuseum.org

Maine Ranks 16th in Latest National Rankings for Child Well-Being AUGUSTA Maine children are experiencing modest improvements in key areas of child well-being that influence their ability to lead healthier, safer lives, but the 2018 Kids CountÂŽ Data Book, released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, shows that there is still room for improvement compared to other states in New England. While fewer Maine

children are living in poverty, too many still face health and economic challenges that could be prevented with stronger policies, according to the report. For nearly 30 years, the Kids Count Data Book has provided a comprehensive look at child well-being in the United States. This year, Maine ranked 16th nationally for overall child well-being. shire ranks first in the country, followed by Massachusetts (2), Connecticut (7), Vermont (8) and Rhode Island (19). The Data Book uses 16 indicators to rank each state across four domains that represent what children need most to thrive — health, education, economic well-being and family and community. In the four domains, Maine ranked:

25th in economic well-being. The economic well-being domain examines data related to child poverty, family employment, housing costs and whether older teens are in school or working. The current data show that 30 percent of children in Maine are in families where no parent has full-time, year-round employment, an improvement from 34 percent in 2010. In addition, slightly fewer Maine children were living in poverty in 2016 (17 percent) than in 2010 (18 percent). 19th in education. High school students graduating on time continues to be a bright spot, and Maine currently ranks 13th on this indicator. However, Maine continues to lag behind the national rate (52 percent) for children ages 3 and 4 not enrolled in early education programs. Maine ranks 27th on this indicator, with 56 percent of its 3- and 4-year-olds not enrolled in early education programs. Sixth in family and community. At 5 percent, Maine leads the nation (tied with Montana, New Hampshire and Wyoming) with one of the lowest percentages of children in families where the head of household lacks a high school diploma. Mirroring a national shift, teen birth rates in Maine are also at a record low, at only 15 births per 1,000 for females ages 10-17. 22nd in health. In contrast with the national trend of improvement in this area, Maine has experienced an overall increase in the percentage of children without health insurance since 2010: 5 percent of Maine children now lack coverage, compared to the national aver-

age of 4 percent. Overall, Maine’s health indicators showed mixed results. The percentage of Maine teens ages 12-17 who abused alcohol or drugs in the past year was equal to the national average of 5 percent. Additionally, at 7.1 percent, Maine is ranked 14th for babies born with low birthweight, reflecting a slight increase since 2010, when 6.3 percent of babies were born with low birthweight. While Maine saw improvement in the child and teen death rate, the state continues to lag in national trends in child health insurance coverage. The percentage of children nationally without health insurance coverage has dropped from 8 percent in 2010 to 4 percent in 2016. But in Maine, that number has increased, from 4 percent not covered in 2010 to 5 percent not covered in 2016, above the national average. Many states are seeing vast improvements in the percentage of children living without health insurance, largely because of the Affordable Care Act. In economic indicators, Maine has seen some improvement. Twenty-seven percent of Maine children live in households with a high housing cost burden (where more than 30 percent of income is consumed by housing costs), down from 30 percent in 2010. In 2016 there were 4,000 Maine teens (6 percent) not in school and not working, a decrease from 2010 when 5,000 teens (7 percent) were not in school and not working. Meanwhile, compared to the nation, Maine saw more young children not in preSee CHILDREN page 17...

Health & Fitness Red Cross Issues Urgent Call For Blood Donors STATEWIDE An emergency blood shortage is prompting the American Red Cross to issue an urgent call for eligible donors of all blood types – especially type O – to give now and help save lives. The Red Cross escalated its call for blood and platelet donors after a difficult Independence Day week for donations. More than 550 fewer blood drives were organized by businesses and other community groups last week than during a typical week as individuals across the country celebrated the holiday and enjoyed summer activities. This could equate to as many as 15,000 fewer donations than needed, causing donations to now be distributed to hospitals faster than they come in. “Each and every day, individuals across the country depend on blood and platelet donations for lifesaving treatments and emergency care, so it’s critical that people donate now to meet these needs, said Cliff Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “Whether you’ve never donated or give a couple of times a year, you’re needed to give as soon as possible to help save patient lives. Yours may be the donation a patient is counting on. This need is especially critical for type O blood donors. Type O is the most in-demand blood type and often the first be depleted from hospital shelves during a shortage. Type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the

most serious situations. Type O positive is the most common blood type and can be transfused to Rh-positive patients of any blood type. How to help: To schedule an appointment to donate, use the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-red-cross (1-800-7332767). The Red Cross has added about 6,500 additional appointment slots at donation centers and community blood drives across the country over the next few weeks to accommodate more donors. Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce the time it takes to donate. Upcoming blood donation opportunities July 9-31: Berwick - 7/14: 8 a.m. ...CHILDREN from page 16 school (52 percent vs. 56 percent), slightly more fourth-graders not reading at grade level (65 percent vs. 64 percent), and more eighth-graders not proficient in math (67 percent vs. 64 percent). However, 87 percent of high school students graduated on time in 2015-16, a step above the national average of 84 percent. “In Maine, as well as in other states, young children under 5 are the most likely to be overlooked in the census compared to any other age group, said Helen Hemminger, MCA’s research and KIDS Count associate. “These children are more likely to live in poverty, to be homeless, to be moving among various relatives or to live in blended families.

Did You Know About Anxiety? According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States. Roughly 40 million adults in the United States, or 18 percent of the country’s population, has an anxiety disorder. Developing from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events, anxiety disorders are highly treatable. Unfortunately, the ADAA notes that less than 40 percent of those suffering from anxiety disorders receive treatment. Treatment of anxiety disorders can be highly effective and can even help people deal with

other disorders, as the ADAA says nearly one-half of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. People living with anxiety disorders who seek treatment may find they also are suffering from depression, compelling them to receive treatment for that disorder as well and further improving their quality of life. $12 Million for Dredging and Maintenance Projects in Maine NRF to Provide RISE Up Training

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released its fiscal year 2018 work plan, which includes important dredging and maintenance projects in Maine totaling $11,780,000. The budget for the Army Corps of Engineers is overseen by the Senate Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee, of which Senator Collins is a senior member. “We are pleased that the Army Corps of Engineers has advanced these critical dredging projects for Maine harbors and rivers, which will help address significant safety and navigational concerns for commercial fishermen as well as recreational boaters, said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Maine’s waterways are the lifeblood of many coastal regions and support our state’s economy. We will continue to work with the Corps and local communities to address Maine’s other important maintenance needs. The Maine projects that have received funding under the Corps’ work plan are as follows: Saco River $4,200,000 with funds being used to award a fully funded base bid contract with options to perform maintenance dredging of about 140,000 cubic yards of material from the 8-foot channel and an-

chorage with in-river placement and beach renourishment; York Harbor, $2,500,000, funds are being used to award a fully funded contract to perform maintenance dredging of about 42,000 cubic yards of material from the 10foot channel and 8-foot anchorages with placement at the Cape Arundel Disposal Site; Cape Porpoise Harbor, $2,500,000, funds will be used for maintenance dredging; Wells Harbor, $400,000, funds are being used to perform maintenance dredging of the 8-foot entrance channel using the government dredge, about 5,000 cubic yards of sandy material would be removed and placed at a near shore site off Wells Beach, Disposal Area Monitoring, $1,050,000. Funds are also being used to perform annual disposal site monitoring; including condition surveys, sediment sampling and testing, repositioning of disposal site buoys and preparation of several monitoring study reports, Project Condition Surveys - $1,000,000. Funds are being used for performing hydrographic and topographic project condition surveys (PCS) for federally authorized navigation projects, including navigation channels, inlets, anchorages, structures such as jetties and breakwaters, and other navigation features within the states. Funds are also used to respond to unanticipated needs, including concerns raised by the U.S. Coast Guard, local

harbor masters, or other agencies regarding projects that have become shoaled as a result of severe storms and/or abnormal deposition rates that may have compromised safe navigation. There will also be Inspection of Completed Works, $95,000, with funds being used to inspect federally constructed and locally maintained flood risk management projects with an emphasis on approximately 11,750 of federally authorized and locally maintained levee systems. Funds are also used to review updates to project operation and maintenance manuals. For Surveillance of Northern Boundary Waters, $30,000, funds are being used for monitoring of lake levels and outflows; monitoring and approving international apportionment of water; forecasting lake levels and river flows during periods of high or low water collecting, analyzing, and maintaining hydrometeorlogic data, including post-flood reports; monitoring flood operations; assisting in transboundary dispute resolution; and preparing and disseminating information to the public. For Inspection of Completed Environmental Projects, $5,000, funds are being used to conduct pre-inspection preparation, post-inspection reporting, transmit notification requirements to the sponsor, and add completed inspection reports to the National Ecosystem Restoration Project Database. The program covers all 50 states and territories of the U.S.

KITTERY The NRF Foundation announced that it has formed a partnership with the Maine Department of Adult Education and the Retail Association of Maine to provide the Foundation’s RISE Up training and credentials to young adults in Kittery. “Retail launches more people into employment than any other industry, NRF Foundation President Ellen Davis said. “We are delighted to expand our training and credentialing program in Maine and help young adults find jobs, become a valuable part of the local economy and workforce, and take their first steps into promising retail careers. The Kittery Adult Education Center will deliver training for the Retail Industry Fundamentals credential, in conjunction with two other workforcereadiness credentials, to a pilot group of adults ages 18 to 22 who are currently completing high school diploma courses. The Department of Adult Education plans to expand the program to more locations throughout the state later this year. “The Maine Department of Education Office of Adult Education appreciates the opportunity to partner with the NRF Foundation and the Retail Association of Maine to establish a pathway to retail careers for Maine adults, Office of Adult Education and Family Literacy State Director

Gail Senese, Ph.D., said. “This collaboration will meet Kittery’s need for skilled employees. We look forward to continuing this valuable partnership and replicating this program throughout the state. Several local retailers will support the pilot including the Kittery Trading Post, which will offer employment to qualified credentialed candidates. The Trading Post will also help with classroom presentations, store tours, mock interviews and other training activities. The Outlets at Kittery will involve many of its retailers as well. “We are excited to partner with the NRF Foundation and the Retail Association of Maine to establish the RISE Up pilot program in Maine, Kittery Trading Post Vice President Fox Keim said. “In this current environment of exceptionally low unemployment and an aging workforce, the RISE Up program will provide a solid launching pad for candidates of any age to start their retail careers. The RISE Up program is one more tool that we can use to successfully address our hiring needs. The Retail Industry Fundamentals credential prepares participants for jobs as entrylevel retail associates in distribution centers, call centers and stores. The training is designed to provide a wide array of knowledge in areas such as retail tools and technologies, customer service, retail math, inventory and interview skills. The NRF Foundation launched RISE Up in January 2017 and is working with retail, nonprofit and public education partners nationwide to help people — regardless of education, background, economic means or age — acquire the skills they need to secure jobs in retail and advance into promising careers. Since its launch, more than 26,000 participants have completed RISE Up training and credentials. The NRF Foundation designed the training in collaboration with dozens of retailers, nonprofits and foundations, ensuring that the skills and training it provides meet industry needs, and that the materials created are user-friendly for nonprofits and education groups. The training can be delivered in the classroom or online to people of all backgrounds, ages and education levels.

Christina Mary Chisholm, 90 SOMERVILLE, MA / WELLS – Christina Mary Chisholm, a resident of Somerville, MA, formerly of Wells, died Monday, July 9, 2018, in Somerville, MA, following a period of failing health with her family at her side. Christina was born in Boston, December 13, 1927, the daughter of the late John J. and Christina (Quirk) Crane, and is a graduate of Cambridge Latin School. She grew up in east Cambridge and lived in Somerville and Arlington for many years, and was employed with New England Telephone. Married John V. Chisholm on September 17, 1949 at Sacred Heart Church in east Cambridge, MA. They were married 49 years before John died October 19, 1998 in Wells. Moving to Maine in the early 1980s, together with her husband operated the Second Time Around Shop and a Guest House for several years. To know her was to love her. She was known for her great sense of humor which she maintained throughout her illness. Christina was proud of her Irish roots, loved spending time with friends and family, enjoyed reading, crocheting, making cards, doing puzzles and playing games, especially bingo, and she played a mean game of scrabble. In her retirement, she resided in Ozona and Tarpon Springs, FL.

She is predeceased by her brothers, infant John, Thomas, James and Edward Crane. Christina is survived by her five children Christine Val Perry (John), Elizebeth Chisholm, John V. Chisholm (Carol Deshler), Jeanne Chisholm (Rory Leombruni), and Barbara Britt (Robert); nine grandchildren Joyel Morris (Michael), John V. Chisholm (Shannon Lyons), Ian Chisholm (Jennifer), Deirdre Johnson (Kevin), Kurt Chisholm (Courtney), Cecily Vigeant (Jeffrey), Christopher Shonting, Kristy and Keith Perry; twelve great grandchildren Micheala, Lauchlen and Chisholm Morris, Darwin Chisholm, Tyler, Austin and Summer Chisholm, Brayden, Kyleigh and Adeline Johnson, Gavin Chisholm, and Charlotte Vigeant. A private funeral mass will be held at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary’s Church. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Christina’s Book of Memories page at www.bibberfuneral.com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

geous and strong battle against Parkinson’s Disease, she finally succumbed to the side effects of this horrible disease. What we will remember most about this awesome camera toting wife, daughter, sister, mother, niece, aunt and friend, is her tremendous love and kindness. And her Whoopie pies. An amazing and accomplished artist whose medium was continually evolving and developing along the creative cutting edge, her art was sold in many places on the Seacoast and can be found in homes and businesses around the country. Something she found great happiness in, was passing this love of developing and creating to her grandchildren in time spent “arting together. Her grandchildren Maddie Stella, Caleb Holt-Fitzgerald, Olivia Holt, Cameren Holt, Averi Holt, Joshua “Charlie Holt, Jr, and Theodore Holt, ALL had a very special relationship with their Nini. She enjoyed every minute with them and every hug she got. She is someone who was never afraid to try new things, from her time growing up in Elwyn Park convincing her parents to build her a dark room, riding a motorcycle, and graduating a year early, to moving to Seattle after graduation. She enjoyed the fond and sometimes crazy memories growing up as the younger sister of Edward Duggan and Deborah Duggan, and the older sister of Anne Sorrenty and Frank Duggan. She got her dogged determination from her father Edward Duggan, deceased, and

her amazingly large, kind and compassionate heart from her mother Dorothy Duggan. Her brothers and sisters still remember how she convinced them to take her cat camping for a week. A great cook and baker, we’re not sure if she coined the phrase “food is love, but she was a fan of the term none the less. Never more so than when she was surrounded at family events by her nieces and nephews, and their children, each whom had a special place in her heart. Along the way she managed to raise three sons and a step son, into strong and caring men who are going to miss her loving wisdom, guidance and friendship. Joshua Holt Sr., Jeremiah “JJ Holt, Zac Holt and Nick Goodwin, all meant the world to her, and her to them. From broken wooden spoons to teaching them to drive to listening and giving sage life advice; she was an amazing mother whose lessons will continue to live on. After raising all boys, she was overjoyed to add three daughters to her life. Kim, Carly, and Rebecca all shared with her unique relationships that held a common bond: Love. They will miss her greatly, and she will always be a part of them. The last half of her life was immediately and forever

Susan Goodwin (Duggan) ELIOT – Susan Goodwin (Duggan) passed away surrounded by what she loved most – her loud, loving and large family. After a 12 year coura-

changed when she met Brian Goodwin. From their first date on York Beach, she found in Brian a perfect partner who was willing to share in her adventures, and they built an amazing life filled with family, fun and love. From their wedding in San Francisco, their time on Cape Cod, and travel to Italy, France and Germany, as well as their time as business owners, along with their time boating and spent with family; Brian became her everything, and she his. Papa Brian should be promoted to Sainthood for his caring, compassion and plentiful love during her long battle with Parkinson’s. According to her wishes, a celebration of Sue’s life is being scheduled for later this summer. Please visit www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com for details and to leave online condolences for her family. Another Chance Animal Rescue

NORTH BERWICK Introducing Galahad and Gwenivere, a very royal, sweet bonded pair of playful and snuggly siblings who were originally adopted out by us just over a year ago as baby kittens and through no fault of their own had to be returned to us by their very distraught humans whose love for them was evident. The male human has had some health issues that led to him becoming permanently blind and while they tried making modifications to accommodate his blindness with two very active and playful young cats who thought his navigating cane was a toy to be chased, simply put, the dangers to his personal safety became too difficult and at risk after a few near misses on the stairs. Both cats have to go together as a pair, this is non-negotiable. They have adapted well at the rescue, but really need to find a home with a family to call their own. They have never been around dogs, so how they’d be with one is unknown, but if introduced gradually and properly, they may do ok. Come meet Galahad and Gwenivere, along with many of our other lovely young adult and teen kittens who would love

Our new hours are Wednesday Friday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Donations of gently used goods such as in-season clothing in good repair, small furniture pieces, decor, toys, games, and other household items are desperately needed and can be dropped off at the 37 Market Street, North Berwick, during open store hours. We are currently trying to get new flooring for our adoption facility that is greatly in need of being replaced. Donations to help us with this would be greatly appreciated! To donate, send to PO Box 552, North Berwick ME 03906 or use PayPal for boomeredgewater@gmail.com. Thank you for your ongoing support and generosity in helping us to help them! Russell. He loves his chew toys, and is quite good at guarding his home from pesky squirrels. While he can be a little stubborn at times, he is a very, very friendly guy. When he’s relaxing, he very much enjoys curling up on a blanket near his people. Rowdy should go to a home without cats. He finds them too tempting to chase. If you think Rowdy’s the one for you, please stop by to meet him! Thank you for your support. Our booth at the Antique Show wouldn’t be a success without our generous community!

hearts of all who meet him. Extremely lovable, loaded with personality and great looks, Baby Fred charms everyone he meets. At 10 months, he’s still like a baby, so the name “Baby Fred stuck. And what the heck, everyone loves to baby him anyway! Fred’s the kind of kitty you just want to hold and smooch all day. He loves toys and other kitties and his personality makes him the purrfect match for a household with the time to spend with him and another playful playmate. For details, call our adoption center at 207-646-1611. Additional Sunday morning volunteer help is needed at the center. If you have a couple hours to help with cat care, we’d love to have you. You’ll help clean, sweep, mop, do laundry and refresh linens. You’ll work with fellow cat lovers and enjoy the community of caregivers. Plus you’ll enjoy hanging out with kitties who purr their love and appreciation – a great cure for loneliness and depression, too! Call Stephanie at 207-2812594 for more information.

Update: Phoenix, whose initial gallbladder surgery cost $4,700, was taken back to emergency this week to treat a secondary infection. Phoenix is resting in foster care and is doing well. But that additional $3,300 expense – almost $8,000 in total – was another major blow to our budget. Plus we’re still reeling from the huge rent increase at our thrift shop this year. So please make a donation at our GoFundMe page, website, Facebook, or mail a check to Safe Haven, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090. Our thrift shop will no longer be accepting donations after 3 p.m. each day. Too many people have been bringing carloads of items just before closing time. This has created chaos, clogged the aisles, and delayed closing. Thank you for your donations and understanding!

Maine CASA to Hold Fall Training August 14-17

AUGUSTA Interested in speaking up for a Maine foster child? The Maine Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Program is holding its fall training for volunteer advocates on August 14-17 in the Augusta area. The four-day training is free. Attendees learn about all aspects of child advocacy work in order to be certified as a volunteer guardian ad litem in the Maine

District Courts. Maine CASAs are community volunteers who are appointed to serve as guardians ad litem (GALs) for children whose parents are involved in a child protection case. The foundation of the CASA’s work is learning about the case and then advising the judge in writing of what he/ she believes is in the child’s best interest. CASAs come from a wide

variety of professional and personal backgrounds and are guided throughout the process by staff attorneys. CASAs bring their own unique perspectives to their work as volunteers. Last year, hundreds of children involved in a child protection case had a volunteer CASA who served as the child’s voice in court. Right now, there are more

foster children than CASA volunteers. If you have a big heart and are willing to speak up for a Maine child, apply to become a CASA volunteer. You do not need any special training to apply other than having a high school diploma or GED equivalent. You must also be over 21. Along with the application, you will need to provide three references and must complete a background check that includes

disclosing any criminal or child protection history. You can find out more about the Maine CASA Program and the application by visiting our website at www. casaofmaine.org. For more information about becoming a volunteer, contact Maine CASA Legal Services Advisor Darren Defoe, Esq. at 213-2864 or e-mail: darren.defoe@courts. maine.gov.

Annual State of Maine Luncheon to support Scouting in Maine. Approximately 300 community and business leaders attended the event. “It is a pleasure to be here to celebrate the Pine Tree Council and its commitment to the young people and families of Central and Southern Maine, said Senator Collins. “The benefits of scouting can be measured in many ways; however, there is no better measure than the support the Pine Tree Council receives from individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout this region. “Growing up in Caribou, I was very fortunate to have personally experienced the benefits of scouting, Senator Collins continued. “My father was a Boy Scout, my mother was a

Cub Scout den leader, and I was a Girl Scout. My siblings and I saw every day the values of character, citizenship, and service. Following her remarks, Senator Collins honored Eagle Scout Tyler Bracket for his heroism in April when he warned residents of an apartment building of a fire, enabling them to escape unharmed. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Pine Tree Council carries out this mission in central, western and southern Maine through a locally operated non-profit corporation chartered by the national council and supported by local volunteers and contributors.

The History of our Lives as Defined by a Dishwasher By Jim Fabiano Lives can be defined in many ways. A photo book, newspaper clippings, home movies, and even the history of our social systems on line can display all of our histories. The other day I was emptying the dishwasher for my wife and noticed there were few dinner dishes and a whole lot of wine and beer glasses. I smiled when I observed this because I knew the last few days had been filled with many friends and thus empty cans and bottles. The one symbol of our lives past that has been ignored because most do not believe it exists is the contents of our dishwashers. All of our dishwashers, the mechanical type and not the human type, can summarize our actions week in and week out. For example, if your dishwasher is filled with normal dishes and glasses chances are you had a boring week. Chances are also good that you gained a

bit of weight. If you look close you could also see what meals were memorable and meals that were memorable for the worse possible reasons. Those usually include the ones I attempted to cook. Sometimes your dishwasher could be filled with every plastic storage dish known to mankind. These shiny translucent containers come in every pastel color that has ever been discovered. One of my biggest fears has to do with emptying this kind of load. I don’t know what I would do if I had one extra bottom or even one extra lid. Knowing the melting points of most plastics is far less than any normal dish or pan I fear a melted blob of blue slime covering what was once the heater element of the dishwasher could be discovered. Also knowing the fumes this type of combustion can and probably are very toxic. If that ever happens it See LIVES page 36...

~ Sports ~ Locals Cycle Toward $52 Million in the 2018 Pan-Mass Challenge YORK COUNTY On August 4 and 5, local riders from York, North Berwick, South Berwick, Ogunquit and Wells will cycle up to 192 miles in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) with the goal of raising $52 million for adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. During PMC weekend, over 6,200 cyclists from more than 40 states and seven countries will gather in Massachusetts to participate in the PMC. Riders include everyone from seasoned triathletes to weekend warriors and range in age from 15 to 84. Many ride to honor a family member or friend lost to, or being treated for cancer, and more than 850 riders and volunteers are cancer survivors or current patients themselves, and considered Living Proof®

of the PMC mission. Designed to cater to all levels of cycling and fundraising ability, the PMC offers 12 different routes, varying in mileage and difficulty, that pass through 46 towns across the Commonwealth, with

starting lines in Sturbridge, Wellesley and Bourne. Cyclists are required to raise between $600 and $8,000, depending on the chosen route, though the average cyclist raises more than $7,000, which exemplifies the spirit of the PMC and its riders. Volunteers, spectators, donors and sponsors are also part of the camaraderie on ride weekend, all working together in hopes of one day eradicating cancer. “After surpassing our goal and raising $51 million for Dana-Farber last year, we are excited to keep the momentum going as we approach our 39th PMC ride weekend,” said Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC. “We are continuously humbled by the dedication and generosity of our riders, volunteers, donors, sponsors and community members – it’s thanks to them that the PMC is able to make such an immense impact on the fight against cancer. In 2017, the PMC gave a record gift of $51 million to Dana-Farber, bringing it’s 38-year contribution to a total of more than $598 million since its inception in 1980.

Wells-Ogunquit CSD Recognizes Retiring Staff

WELLS The end of the 2017-2018 school year in the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District (WOCSD) found eight staff members retiring. In addition, three staff members (including one who is also retiring) reached the 20-year milestone in service to the District. All of these individuals were honored on June 19 in a “Celebration of Service to Education” luncheon in appreciation of their service and dedication to education. This annual event was held for all District staff

members at Wells Junior High School. WOCSD Superintendent Jim Daly spoke first in appreciation of those assembled. He was followed by the principals of the District’s three schools including April Noble of Wells Elementary School, Robert Griffin of Wells Junior High School and Eileen Sheehy of Wells High School who recognized the following individuals from their schools with comments and gift bags. Retiring is Sandy Brennan (44 years of service), Bruce Fearon (39 years), Deb Howard

(27 years), Henry Ingwersen (20 years), Tari Matthews (24 years), Cheryl Oakes (22 years), Karen Westerberg (14 years), and Adrienne Zwetsloot (23 years). Henry Ingwersen, Chris Milliken and Diane St. Onge were recognized for 20 years of service to the District. “I want you to go and enjoy the summer,” said Superintendent Daly in closing remarks. “I think that is extremely important.” Addressing those not retiring he commented, “… come back refreshed, come back motivated, come back caring

about kids and continue to do what you do.” In speaking about education and the operation of a school, Daly added, “We couldn’t do it without secretaries, without custodial staff, without the teachers, Ed Techs, you

name it; it’s all of us together. That’s what a team is, everybody pitching in, working together to make sure that we’re looking out for the best interest of kids. That’s what we do. .. You make a difference every day.”

ing for one of my favorite storage bowls I stole from my mother. One of the more interesting dishwasher contents are various and usually large pots and pans. This means a meal must have been attempted because my wife and I were intrigued by an episode of ‘Chopped’ or why someone was burned out of ‘Hell’s Kitchen’. Most of the time these large pots and pans never should have seen the inside of a dishwasher. My wife makes me clean them before they are allowed to enter the dishwasher or what I like to call our autoclave. I made the mistake of once grabbing the

cover of a large pot forgetting the dishwasher just finished its drying cycle. Needless to say that particular trip to the emergency department at our local hospital was an interesting one. When I explained to the doctor what I did he just looked at me with a sympathetic glare as he wondered what type of medication I was on. There have been times when my dishwasher was filled with coffee cups. To be honest, I am a great collector of coffee cups. I have some dated back to the mid-1970’s displaying various rock groups that are still attempt-

ing to play today. My 1980’s cups display deep statements or prose that to this day I have no idea as to what they mean. The 1990’s cups are my sport teams cups. They display every losing team I’ve ever cheered on. I have few to no cups displaying a team that actually won. The 2000 to date cups display many political slogans and politicians. Needless to say the ones now occupying the dishwasher never had the opportunity to serve. The basic fact about having a dishwasher filled with coffee cups means you just suffered through a difficult time in your

life. It could be financial problems or even social ones. Caffeine is the drug of choice for people who don’t want to go to sleep and thus dwell on the problems at hand. The one symbol of our lives past that has been ignored because most do not believe it exists is the contents of our dishwashers. As with all our lives, the contents never stay the same because nothing ever does. I wonder what an empty dishwasher represents? Jim Fabiano is a retired teacher living in York. You can contact Jim at james.fabiano60@ gmail.com.

...LIVES from page 30 would be important to check up on any pet or small child that was hopefully still living in the house. Having one’s dishwasher filled with these types of containers means most of your meals were at somebody else’s house. This also means a lot of cooking was done and few leftovers were left behind. I’ve lost many containers and discovered multiple others I have no idea as to where they came from. I sometimes get a suspicious look from a neighbor wondering if I was the one who decided to keep one of their very special containers. I’m still look-
