Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Spread Across Maine STATEWIDE As the population has become more environmentally conscious, more and more electrical vehicle charging stations are being installed across the state of Maine. ReVision Energy has installed numerous charging stations at Hannaford stores including Portland, South Portland, Augusta, York, Brunswick, and Topsham. The Maine Audubon in Falmouth, Fort Andross in Brunswick and Maple Hill Farm B&B in Hallowell have also recently installed EV charging stations.

Fortunat Mueller, cofounder of ReVision Energy, explains that, "More and more Mainers are discovering how great it is to drive in an efficient, quiet, maintenance free electric vehicle that costs just pennies per mile to own. We are delighted to partner with leading Maine businesses and residents to build out the network of electric vehicle charging infrastructure to enable this transition, and are especially excited when the EV chargers are paired with solar projects. Nothing compares to driving on sunshine!"

Phil Coupe, co-founder of ReVision Energy, has been driving an all-electric Nissan Leaf for four years. “Every day it is getting more convenient to take longer trips as the network of charging stations continues to grow in Maine and the rest of New England he said. “Most of the 200 charging stations in Maine today are still free and open to the public, but even when I occasionally have to pay at a charging station the cost is usually less than three dollars See ELECTRIC page 4...

Nicole’s Run / Walk was first organized by friends and family of Nicole Oliver, a 24year old mother of two from Wells, who was killed by her husband in 2007. Nicole had recently left her abusive husband and was working to rebuild a safe and secure life for herself and her two young sons. She was taking courses towards her goal of becoming a registered nurse when she was killed. This year, Nicole’s Run

adopted the name Ellie’s Walk in memory of Ellie Troost. Ellie’s family, particularly her late mother Morven Troost, have been a tremendous source of support for the 5K and Caring Unlimited over the life of the event. Each year, Caring Unlimited serves approximately 3,000 individuals whose lives are affected by domestic abuse through support and safety planning services including: 24-hour confidential hotline, emergency See NICOLE page 5...

A colleague stated, “Mr. Griffin believes in a model of shared leadership and will use this paradigm of collaboration to ensure that there is an environment that supports the learning, social, and emotional needs of each and every student. “ The search process began on June 1 with a faculty meeting

to gather input about the attributes desired in a new principal. Two committees were formed of highly respected teachers, parents, a school committee member, and administrators. The selection committee met on June 22 to review applications and selected three candidates to interview. After a round of interviews with highly qualified candidates by a separate committee on June 29, one finalist was forwarded to Superintendent Daly.

KITTERY In a world where children spend an increasing amount of their time huddled over electronic devices connected to headphones or in organized events, a unique partnership is helping them plug into nature. The Kittery Land Trust has teamed up with a summer program for K-4th graders to sponsor several events to let kids be kids! The Safe Alternatives For Enrichment (S.A.F.E.) is an educational and recreational program run by the Kittery Community Center, encouraging children to be active, creative and have fun while exploring the world around them. Now in its 22nd year the S.A.F.E. program, counselors put their young daycampers through a wide range of experiences over the course of the summer session. Meanwhile, Kittery Land Trust, with offices in the East Wing of the Kittery Community Center, has developed an educational outreach program called “Plugging into Nature to assist educators, parents and youth groups with getting kids out of doors in their own community and learning about nature. The program, supported by a grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, has developed an in-school program on vernal pools for the Elementary School, a half-day outdoor classroom for Middle School, service learning projects on nature preserves for high school students and facilitated a community conversation on the benefits of and barriers to getting kids out into nature. The Plugging into Nature program seeks to plug in with existing programs and education plans by offering its lands or its active volunteers for place based environmental learning. Partnering with the S.A.F.E. program summer camp was the brainchild of KLT volunteer and retired art teacher, Gale Turner. While employed as an art teacher she engaged her students outside the traditional classroom having them build sand sculptures near water’s edge. Besides stimulating their talents they experienced the impact of tides, the ebb and flow of life in a way that no textbook or lesson plan could. “This collaboration between KLT and KCC works perfectly within our goal to have this age group learn to engage with nature and appreciate all it has to offer. Our nature based preschool classrooms already utilize an outdoor classroom all year round and have daily adventures within Rogers Park, said Janice Grady, Director of

“This generous gift from the Hannaford Charitable Foundation will have a major educational impact on York County, said Jane Phillips, the president of The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges. “It will enable York County Community College to continue to grow and serve more students and more businesses who rely on a skilled workforce to prosper. Construction on the new building is scheduled to begin this fall and to be completed in time for the start of the fall 2017 semester. Other funding sources for the $8.4 million project include a 2013 voter approved bond issue, college funds, support from the Maine Community College System, and private fund raising. This is the second major gift from the Hannaford Charitable Foundation to The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges. An earlier gift of $500,000 funded initiatives on multiple campuses including the Hannaford Center for Culinary Arts at YCCC; support for the culinary arts and diesel, truck and heavy equipment programs at

Eastern Maine Community College; and major new investments in technology and equipment at Southern Maine Community College’s Midcoast Campus in Brunswick. In recognition of that gift, SMCC dedicated the Hannaford Auditorium on the Midcoast Campus in October 2013. Hannaford Supermarkets, based in Scarborough, Maine, operates 189 stores in the Northeast. Stores are located in Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Hannaford employs more than 27,000 associates. Additional information can be found at www. hannaford.com. Visitors are also invited to peruse local history reference books and archives. The story of South Berwick begins in 1630s with the arrival of English settlers and their initial successful trade with the local natives, the Wabanaki. At the time, old Berwick, known as Quamphegan, was a part of Kittery, and was the most inland point up the Piscataqua River. Thanks to the river access, towns surrounding Portsmouth were able to provide items for trade overseas, to Europe and the Caribbean. Over time, develop-

ment on the settled land led to strained relationships with the natives, and in 1675, war spread across New England, including in southern Maine and old Berwick. In 1713, Berwick separated from Kittery. Throughout the 1700s, war with the Indians continued, and the inhabitants of Berwick lived in a state of constant alarm in fear of the raids from the Wabanaki. Part one of the exhibit features pottery pieces, maps, and narratives from this time period. When the French and Indian Wars ended in 1765, revolution was on the horizon. Berwick joined the Continental Congress in 1776 in declaring war on Britain, and sent a militia to fight in the war. After the Revolutionary War, Berwick began to

Part two of the exhibit focuses on Berwick’s role in the Revolutionary War, and its role in shipbuilding, including maritime items on display. on its established “York Collects theme. Instead of exhibiting the work of an individual artist and rounding up examples of that artist’s work, the library will honor a single private York collection. Dr. William Wieting and his wife Amey of York Harbor have been acquiring the works of American traditional painters since the late 1960s. However, the first pieces in their collection came to them unsought with the purchase of their beloved home, now known as the Hubbard Red Cottage, a structure built in 1891 by well-to-do widow Jenny LeBrun. LeBrun initiated the future Wieting Collection with the installation long before of several paintings that remained in the house after its sale. Two of these will be in featured in the show, along with about 15 or 20 others from what’s known as “The American Gilded Age. The Wietings have collected works of that era since purchasing the house in 1969. The exhibition emphasizes the connection between the art and the Wieting home, a 14-room "cottage that allows wall space adequate for hanging many paintings. The building’s age and style have provided a focus and an important stimulus to the collection’s development. The public is invited to an opening reception on July 12 at 5 p.m., when the Wietings will talk about collecting art in general and their collection in particular. The York Public Library is located at 15 Long Sands Road in York. For more information, call 207-363-2818 or visit www. york.lib.me.us. The Weekly

Mystery Authors in Kennebunk

KENNEBUNK When mystery readers and writers meet, things can turn deadly. They will Saturday, July 16, when Lea Wait and Barbara Ross, writers of mystery series set along the Maine coast, appear at downtown Kennebunk’s Mainely Murders Bookstore, 1 Bourne Street, at 3 p.m. Both women are writers of what is commonly called the mystery “cozy — little/no violence, sex, and "offensive" language; an “amateur detective; and a circle of engaging characters. Wait, a resident of Edgecomb, is the author of two popular series. The Shadows Antique

Prints mystery series expands to eight titles in September with Shadows on a Morning in Maine — joining Shadows at the Fair, Shadows on the Coast of Maine, Shadows on the Ivy, Shadows at the Spring Show, Shadows on a Down East Summer, Shadows on a Cape Cod Wedding, and Shadows on a Maine Christmas. Her Mainely Needlepoint series, which debuted in 2015 with Twisted Threads, features protagonist Angie Curtis, who returns home to fictional Haven Harbor, only to discover the small coastal town she once couldn’t wait to leave has grown a lot more exciting — and dangerous.

Threads of Evidence and Thread and Gone follow, with Dangling by a Thread due out in October. Ross, a longtime summer resident of Boothbay Harbor, authors the Maine Clambake Mystery series, set in fictional Busman’s Harbor, where heroine Julia Snowden, who’s comes home to save the family clambake business, ends up in hot water faster than the lobsters. With her next title, Iced Under, set for December release, the series will then stand at five as it joins Clammed Up, Boiled Over, Musseled Out and Fogged Inn. Books by each author will be available for purchase and signing. In addition, the afternoon will include refreshments

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I love your information, I would like your advice on purchasing a new computer. Is this the time of year, what model and version of windows would you recommend, what store the best? I would appreciate all the help, even if you say wait till the first of year. Thanks alot, Nancy Dear Nancy, While I can’t give you an exact model of computer to purchase, I can tell you what to look for. The speed of your computer is determined by two things, the processor and the RAM. I

would suggest that you look for a computer with a quad core processor. Quad core means that there are actually 4 processors on the chip, all running at the same time. Think about it this way, you can fill a pool with one water hose, and it will take a long time. If you use 4 hoses, you can fill it in 1/4 the time. The amount of RAM determines how many things the computer can work on at once. I would suggest at least 6GB (gigabytes) of RAM. Stay away from computers that only come with 2GB of RAM. My work computer has 16GB of RAM. For the operating system,

I would go with Windows 10. It doesn’t make sense to go with an older operating system, since you would need to upgrade at some point. Storage space on your computer, (your hard drive) should be at least 500GB, most computers will have a 1TB (terabyte) hard drive. If you are going to do graphics work, gaming, or watch a lot of videos, then you probably want a graphics card with extra memory on the card. As for where to purchase the computer, I would suggest a store with a good return policy (just in case you get a lemon) and a store that you know you can get good support at. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there a way to access the old control panel in Windows 10? That would make my computer easier to use now that I have upgraded to 10. Thanks so much, June Dear June, There is an easy way to access, not only the control panel, but also some of the other powerful tools included in the

operating system. Actually, there are two very easy ways. Method #1 is to right-click on the start button (which in Windows 10 is the white flag). You will find not only the control panel in the context menu, but also device manager, disk management, and a command prompt to name a few. Method #2 is to use the keyboard combination, Windows logo key (the one with the flag on it in the bottom row) and the letter X. This will bring up the same menu that right-clicking on the start button brings. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Got a new HP touch screen laptop (w/Windows 10) last Christmas, 2015. Now, my 6 month old laptop computer will only power up to a blue screen, with a small message box, that tells me I need to insert the installation disc and reinstall everything! This new laptop did NOT come any installation disc (as did previous ones), so I don’t quite know what to do. Should I take it to a local repair shop,

which would probably cost more than it’s worth, or should I contact HP and just ask for an installation disc? Don’t know if I’m I even entitled to a free installation disc for this 6 month old laptop, or not? PLEASE advise. Thank you for all your efforts to help us oldsters, Susan Dear Susan, I would contact HP. Not only should they have a disk for you, but if the computer is only 6 months old, it should still be under warranty. Most computer manufacturers keep recovery disks on hand for a couple of years, and should provide them to you for a small fee. I would tell HP about the blue screen because it sounds like there is some sort of hardware issue going on that a recovery disk alone will probably not fix. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How can I quickly set the password on my computer when I walk away from my desk for a few minutes? It is time consuming to log out and then back in every time I need to check the printer, greet a customer or use the restroom.I’m using Windows 10. Thanks, Mabel Dear Mabel Actually, there is a quick keyboard combination that you can use to lock your computer without logging you out. Just press the windows logo key (the flag symbol in the bottom row of your keyboard) and the letter L. This will lock your computer, and when you come back from the printer all you will have to do is press “enter and type your password. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Included will be the first-ever film versions of such popular tales as 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens and 'Twas the Night Before Christmas,' the poem by Clement C. Moore; each are more than a century old and less than 10 minutes long. Live music will be provided by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based silent film accompanist who performs regularly at screenings around the nation. 'Tess of the Storm County' (1922), a full-length feature, has been hailed as among Mary Pickford's best pictures. The film tells a story of conflict between residents of a poor fishing village who live near the estate of a wealthy family. As the feisty daughter of a village leader who is unjustly put in jail, Pickford plays a key role in a melodramatic plot that takes many surprising turns. This is the first time that they collaborated in Ogunquit. While on sabbatical and living in London in 1973, Sidney traveled the River Thames documenting the numerous warehouses which were soon to be lost or converted. We have a rare opportunity to view industrial and urban architectural imagery along the Thames as a bygone era. During this time Hurwitz began to experiment with etching and aquatint. Based on the

Garvey returns to his hometown in a benefit concert for the South Berwick Public Library, being held at Spring Hill Restaurant, 117 Pond Road on

Tuesday, July 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the library at 27 Young St. (207-384-3308), at South Berwick Pharmacy, or on www.brownpapertickets.com for $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Duval’s Pop-Up Dinner at Black Birch to Benefit The Dance Hall KITTERY – Nationally celebrated chef, restaurant owner, wine fest organizer and sommelier, Michele Duval, of Eliot, shows off another of her pastimes – non-profit fundraising and community outreach – on Sunday, July 24, with a “Pop Up Dinner with Chef Michele Duval at Black Birch in Kittery, to benefit The Dance Hall, located just a few steps away in a landmark building in Foreside Kittery. At $100 per person, admission to the charity event features a reception in the restaurant’s garden, followed by a three course dinner, each paired with select spirits, conceived and prepared by Duval, with assistance of Skye Bonney, a chef at Black Birch. “The ingredients are locallysourced, very fresh and many are high end products, says Duval. “The menu has French, Middle Eastern and Italian influences, reflecting my ethnic background, with maybe an Asian surprise or two. Beverages will be a mix of craft beer, wines and a cocktail or two matched to a specific course and are included in the ticket price. Tickets are already selling in this limited ticket event, a total of 45 diners will be served. “I wanted to produce a charitable event for the Dance Hall and Ben Lord, the owner of Black Birch who also sits on the Dance Hall board, offered his restaurant to me to launch the Pop-Up on a day his restaurant is closed, said Duval, the first woman from the state of Maine to be invited to the famed James Beard Foundation

in New York City. Lord adds that the restaurant “hosts a number of fundraisers for non-profits in our area. We've often worked alongside other chefs for special events and fundraisers, but this is the first ‘pop-up’ we have lent the restaurant to. Skye and I have been friends of Michele for quite some time and this dinner seemed like a fun idea. The Black Birch is a casual dining restaurant featuring New American cuisine, abundant craft beers from New England around the world and music from an extensive vinyl library. Adding to the luster of the artisanal dinner are the bevy of culinary luminaries Duval, a selftaught chef and wine professional, lined up to serve guests at the 45-seat eatery. They include Hillary Schmidle, Sous Chef of Cava; Julie Dunfey, owner-chef of Julie Reed Dunfey Catering; Michael Jack Pazdon and Misty Kinser, proprietors of Wallingford Dram; Jo-Ann Lepore, former banquet captain at Wentworth by the Sea Hotel; Skye Bonney; Emily Hill,

Karen Elaine Cady, 51 WELLS – Karen Elaine Cady, 51, a longtime resident of Libby Lane, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on July 7, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Karen was born in York on November 18, 1964 to Myron

and Gloria (Hanson) Moulton, and attended York schools. She worked at Weathervane Seafood until her children were born; she then started a daycare that allowed her to be at home. After that she worked at Wells elementary School and Peoples United Bank. Karen volunteered countless hours to the boy scouts, school events, and church. If something needed to be done, she was the first to say yes. She enjoyed doing crafts, knitting, finding and cooking her many recipes, working in her beautiful gardens, kayaking and boating at the family camp. Karen’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife to Stephen for 29 years. She was a loving mother to Erik and Emily whom she cherished. When Erik and his wife Abigail had Lillian, and most recently Everly, she was over the moon in love with her beautiful granddaughters.

Karen has many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She also has many friends whom she enjoyed wholeheartedly. Karen taught us all what courage is in the way she faced her battle with cancer head on. She never complained and faced adversity with such strength. She never wavered in her faith. She maintained her grace and dignity until her battle came to an end. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 16 at 11 a.m. followed by a celebration of life at 1 p.m. at the Union Congregational Church in York Beach. Karen’s wish was that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Union Congregational Church, 18 Church Street, York Beach, or Caring for Cure, Massachusetts General Hospital, 50 Staniford St., Ste 200, Boston, MA 02114. Electronic Theft Attempt Poses No Financial Threat SANFORD Officials at the York County Federal Credit Union (YCFCU) announced recently that they believe that an individual or individuals attempted to compromise one of the credit union’s ATM machines on May 21, located at 870 Main Street in Sanford, by implanting an electronic skimming device in order to steal users’ card information. Skimming scams have become a global nuisance. A

large number of instances of skimming have been reported in which the perpetrator has placed a device over the ATM’s card slot that reads the magnetic strip as the user unknowingly passes their card through it. According to the FBI website, skimming devices are installed for short periods of time — usually just a few hours. YCFCU President Scott Chretien stated that the credit union believes this is an isolated incident. “We have not de-

Following the initial hint of suspicion regarding this particular ATM, York County staff immediately initiated extra precautions in monitoring members’ accounts for any inconsistencies. Monitoring accounts with both human and computerized analysis is a safety feature YCFCU actively engages in on a daily basis. “Our members can also take comfort in knowing that

their accounts have extensive insurance coverage that protect them from losses due to fraud, added Chretien. “We can assure them that their accounts with us are completely safe. The credit union has introduced software to thwart fraudulent transactions, and as thieves have become more sophisticated in their attempts to steal information, York County has responded with anti-skimming technology of its own and will continue to do so. TechHire Grant to Improve IT Education & Training STATEWIDE U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc. (CCWI) and Educate Maine have been awarded a $4 million TechHire partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The funding will be used to help TechHire Maine expand

and enhance education and job training for those seeking to work in Maine’s information technology (IT) industry. Senators Collins and King wrote a letter to the U.S. Department of Labor in support of TechHire Maine’s application in April. “Maine’s economy has undergone a transformation over the past several decades, with

New Tactic in the IRS Impersonation Scam For most Americans, tax season ends on April 15. For the con artists operating the pernicious IRS impersonation scam, cheating honest taxpayers is a year-round job. In this scam, fraudsters telephone victims, impersonate an IRS agent, and demand payment for allegedly unpaid taxes. The callers frequently threaten victims with arrest, foreclosure, or other adverse legal action. Scammers often instruct their victims to pay using a money wire or prepaid debit card. In the past several weeks, however, the U.S. Treasury Department has learned that IRS impersonation scammers increasingly are demanding payment in the form of iTunes or other gift cards. Once these con artists have the numbers on the back of the activated gift cards, they can either use the cards for purchases or resell the cards to third parties online. A resident of Kennebec County recently lost $1,000 in iTunes gift cards

through a similar scam. This problem is immense. America’s seniors lose a staggering $2.9 billion each year to an ever-growing array of financial exploitation schemes and scams. With the wave of Baby Boomers now a “Silver Tsunami” of retirees, it is no mystery why financial fraud targeting seniors is considered “The Crime of the 21st Century.” This most recent variation of the IRS impersonation scam demonstrates that these fraudsters are relentless in their desire to rob our nation’s seniors of their hard-earned savings. Thousands of seniors in Maine and across the country have contacted the Senate Aging Committee Fraud Hotline (toll-free at 1-855-3039470) to report that they have received calls and emails that are scams. In the Kennebec County case, a con artist impersonating a deputy sheriff called the victim and told her she would be arrestSee IRS page 20...

IT-related jobs becoming an increasingly important component of economic growth,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “TechHire Maine’s focused career training program will create new opportunities for hundreds of students in our state by helping them gain IT skills that are highly sought-after by today’s employers.” "CCWI is very excited to hear this great news! This will help young people and other workers throughout Maine increase their skills in technology,” said Mike Bourret, Executive Director of CCWI. “It's also a great opportunity for a number of Maine employers to increase their competitiveness. We look forward to working with the other local workforce boards in Maine, Educate Maine and partners in higher education to bring

this effort to fruition." "We are excited that this grant provides us with the opportunity to offer resources and connect a variety of partners to help 500 young adults over the next four years find promising careers in computing and IT occupations at Maine companies,” said Ed Cervone, Executive Director of EducateMaine. “This is the opportunity many of us have been looking for to help Maine people find good jobs." The CCWI-Educate Maine TechHire Maine program will provide a host of services to train young adults and people who have been dislocated in their careers. Resources will include career coaching, paid internships, onthe-job training, and short-term, intensive IT boot camps. In partnership with workforce investment systems, training providers,

and employers such as Goodwill Workforce Solutions and Axiom Technologies, TechHire Maine will seek to recruit, assess, train and place underserved individuals into Maine’s IT industry in positions like computer systems analysts, software developers, and IT project managers. Completed training will also result in an industry-recognized credential for participants. TechHire Maine was one of 39 partnerships across the country that received a total of more than $150 million in funding through the Department of Labor’s TechHire program. TechHire grants support programs across the country that establish training and placement programs to help individuals enter the information technology field.

...IRS from page 20 ed if she did not immediately pay $1,000 in iTunes gift cards for taxes she allegedly owed. The victim was told to buy the cards at a local store and to call back with the gift card numbers. The victim did as she was told, but when the impersonator demanded even more money, she realized she had been scammed and called the police. By that time, it was too late. An investigator

learned that the money had been transferred from the gift cards 25 minutes after they were activated. It is important for taxpayers of all ages to know that the IRS and Maine Revenue Services do not conduct business in this way. If either agency believes back taxes are owned, the taxpayer is notified in writing and there is a process for clarification, appeals, and for negotiating payment plans if taxes truly are owed. Threats of immediate arrest and

demands for payment over the phone – whether by credit, debit, or gift card – are tell-tale signs of a scam. Last year, the Aging Committee’s Fraud Hotline, which is staffed by experienced fraud investigators, received calls from more than 1,100 seniors across the country. The number-one complaint in 2015 was the IRS imposter scam. It is estimated that this scam has cost innocent victims more than $41 million,

averaging more than $5,700 per victim. The Aging Committee’s effort to fight senior fraud is bearing real results. In May, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration arrested five individuals in connection with the IRS imposter scam. Federal authorities believe these suspects scammed almost $2 million from more than 1,500 victims. The arrests stemmed from a call to the Committee’s Fraud Hotline. The caller reported that her husband had recently been contacted by an individual claiming to be from the IRS and demanding immediate payment of alleged back taxes. The Fraud Hotline investigator who received the report was able to trace the $2,000 the victim wired via MoneyGram to Minnesota and reported this information to the Treasury Inspector General. The Inspector General’s subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the five suspects. These actions should put criminals on notice that we will relentlessly pursue those who seek to rob seniors of their hard-earned savings.

The Aging Committee’s yearlong campaign to combat the IRS impersonation scam has had encouraging successes. When they began the investigation, it was estimated that an IRS imposter reeled in one victim for every 60 threatening calls. Now, thanks to increased public awareness, it takes a con artist more than 400 calls to trick someone into falling for this scam. Still, far too many victims are losing their hard-earned money and, often, their retirement savings, to these criminals. The iTunes variation on the IRS impersonation scam underscores the point that, while law enforcement, consumer protection and aging agencies, and financial institutions have vital roles to play, alert citizens are our first and best line of defense. Like scams, being aware and informed is never out of season. Submitted by the office of Senator Susan Collins, Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee.

Staying Healthy During Summer Vacation Summer is here, and for many in New England, that means trips to destinations domestic and abroad. An alltime record 231 million passengers are expected to fly U.S. airlines between June 1 and August 31, up from 210 million a year ago, according to Airlines for America. That includes 30.5 million travelers on international flights. However, about 20 percent of people suffer some type of illness or injury while on vacation, the most common of which include food poisoning and car crashes. Before you hit the road or take to the skies, consider these tips to make sure your health, safety and wallet are covered while you’re away: Know Before You Go Before traveling out of your home state or internationally, take time to review your health plan and understand what it covers. People traveling domestically should check if their health plan offers a national or local network of hospitals and health care providers, and confirm what level of coverage is available at out-of-network facilities. For people planning to travel overseas, it is important

to contact their primary care doctor or travel medicine clinic to determine what pre-screenings or immunizations might be recommended or required, based on their health history and the countries they will visit. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) enables people to search a list of countries and determine what vaccines they should consider. Find Care Anywhere Many health plans now offer telemedicine and mobile apps to support their customers’ health needs. The Health4Me app, available to anyone free of charge on iPhone or Android devices, enables users to identify nearby health care providers, hospitals, pharmacies and urgent care facilities, as well as compare quality and cost information for common medical services. Some health plans offer mobile apps that enable members to access a digital ID card and connect with a registered nurse 24/7. For international trips, contact your global insurance carrier to find out about the availability of approved medical facilities at planned travel destinations.

and financial anxiety with international medical coverage. Global insurance companies can provide foreign-language translation, direct you to appropriate facilities or support evacuation to alternative facilities, and can work with local health care providers to coordinate and monitor care. Most domestic insurance won’t cover prescriptions abroad, so for long vacations ask your care provider for enough medication to cover the duration of the trip (as well as check that specific medications are legal in the countries you are visiting). Some international health plans may include prescription drug coverage that enables people to fill prescriptions at local retail pharmacies.

Be A Savvy Medicare Traveler Original Medicare in nearly all cases applies to the United States only and does not extend overseas or across the border (other than in cases in the Northern U.S. where the nearest hospital is in Canada). Some Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplement plans offer worldwide emergency coverage for foreign travel, although some have restrictions and lifetime limits. Finally, it’s important to account for the working condition of durable medical equipment needed for

the trip, such as glucose monitors and insulin pumps, before departure. Following these tips will help you focus on fun, friends and family during summer vacations, while helping alleviate stress from health care access or insurance issues during a medical emergency. Health & Fitness How To Prepare Your Teen To Succeed In A Complex World When a bright, happy preteen evolves into a self-absorbed or anxious teenager, apprehensive parents can’t help but wonder, “What’s wrong with my child?â€? The answer could be “nothing,â€? other than the typical struggles adolescents have always faced, says Jeffrey Leiken, author of “Adolescence is Not a Disease: Beyond Drinking, Drugs and Dangerous Friends – The Journey to Adulthood.â€? As CEO of Evolution Mentoring International, Leiken provides mentoring for teens and young adults, going beyond the typical work of a therapist by building a relationship so that they come to see Leiken as a trusted confidant who answers their late-night text messages and isn’t quick to label them. “I don’t start with the premise that there is something wrong with them that needs to be fixed,â€? Leiken says. “The teens and young adults I work with often are saner than the system they are in – a system that seems to forget we are raising humans, not building robots.â€? Parents sometimes get caught up in that system, too, but in many cases they just need to chill, he says. Leiken says parents who want to prepare teenagers for the day they will venture out on their own should: • “Great advice, wrong sourceâ€? – Enlist the aid of other adults. Parents are puzzled

brace if the guidance came from someone else. That’s why it’s important to enlist the help of other adults who can offer coaching, training and guidance to the teen.

• Avoid letting fear be the guide. Too many parents are on edge, worried that if their teen

isn’t in the top 1 percent of the high school class, they will be denied hope for economic prosperity, status and independence. Their anxieties can rub See TEEN page 30...

Hunting & Fishing

Maine IFW Fishing Report For July STATEWIDE Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife provides the following fishing report: Region A – Sebago Lakes Region In southern Maine, anglers are still having good fishing on Sebago. Fishing early has provided some action for salmon, but those with the ability to troll deep with downriggers or lead line are getting some nice catches of lake trout throughout the day. Bass have moved off their nests and back into deeper water. However, anglers willing to fish at dusk or later have been rewarded with larger bass cruising the shallows looking to feed. Bass fishing on the Androscoggin continues to be excellent and is a great way to spend the day. There are numerous access points on the river from Bethel all the way down to Brunswick and it’s easy to find an excellent stretch of water to fish. Access sites can be found in towns like Bethel, Newry, Rumford, Dixfield, Livermore Falls, Turner, Auburn, Durham, Lisbon and Brunswick. Spend a day floating a section of the river casting for bass and you won’t be disappointed. Region B – Central and Midcoast Area If you like river fishing, right now is the time to be on

the Kennebec. “The whole river is fishing well, and some areas are fishing fantastic, said IFW fisheries biologist Jason Seiders. The resurgence at the Shawmut section of the dam river has been most notable.“Shawmut has been fishing extremely well, it’s the best it’s been in over ten years, said Seiders, who said that flow levels are very good for wading, and you can access the river from both sides.Evening has been the best time to hit Shawmut, as there have been some decent hatches and the brown trout are responding. Anglers are even catching some brown trout over three pounds. In Skowhegan, below the dam, anglers are also catching brownies, with fish that are exceeding 18 inches in length. One of the best spots to access this section is on the Route 2 side by the boat launch. Up in Madison anglers are getting good number of fish and some of those are in the 18-20 inch range. “We’ve been getting great reports there right from the start of the season, said Seiders, “Try the section from the Abenaki Dam down to the Sandy River. You can access the river from either of the two launches on the west shore, or by some of the trails from the cemetery on the eastern side. Up in Solon, there are reports of some good brown trout, and lots of salmon, though the salmon aren’t as large

Deer Permit Deadline Reminder

as the trout. Bingham is still fishing well for rainbows and brook trout, and one local guide remarked that he cannot remember ever seeing so many brook trout. If you are lake fishing for bass, most have moved off nests and into the deeper water. Target shoals and rocky areas that are 4-5 foot in depth that go down to 20-30 feet.

STATEWIDE The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is accepting online applications for the antlerless deer permit lottery until August 15 at 11:59 p.m. Paper applications must be postmarked by July 27 or delivered in-person to 284 State Street, Augusta by 5 p.m. on

Region D – Rangeley Lakes Up in the Rangeley Lakes area, now is good time to fish the Magalloway. “The Magolloway is fishing like a bandit, says IFW fisheries biologist Bobby Van Riper. “We are doing a creel survey up there and the fishing is pretty good. Biologists have also received news of some good fishing through creel surveys on the Rapid, Mooselook and on Rangeley Lake earlier in the year. Rivers like the Rapid are still fishing pretty well, but it is beginning to warm up in the region and the lakes are starting to stratify. On the Rapid, Brookfield Power has started their pulse flows, designed wash the bass fry off their nests. The alternating high and low flows displace the bass fry from the shallows and into the river where they become easy prey for trout and other predators, while keeping the bass population low in this blue ribbon trout river. In the Kennebago, anglers are still catching trout in some of the deeper pools or where there are seeps in the banks. There are still some pretty good mayflies and caddis emerging on the smaller ponds and rivers. “It’s been a really good spring for fishing up here, summed up Van Riper. This list has been shortened to areas nearer to the Weekly Sentinel readership. For a full report, visit www.maine.gov/ifw/.

off on young people who become hesitant to take risks for fear of endangering their future. Instead of scaring them, parents need to encourage teens to step outside their comfort zones and take risks that will help them grow into confident, well-rounded adults. • Help teens eliminate choices. One popular bit of advice parents hear is they should encourage teenagers to keep all their options open. That sounds like a good strategy, but isn’t. In reality, parents need to encourage teens to eliminate options – such as for colleges or careers – that aren’t and never will be right for them. The teens’ decision-making abilities will increase as a result. “Parents also need to realize they don’t have to become experts in raising teenagers,â€? Leiken says. “They just have to become expert in raising their own teenager.â€? Jeffery Leiken (www. Leiken.com) is the CEO of Evolution Mentoring International and is co-founder of HeroPath

Furthermore, a recent study found that after each megabit per second increase in internet speeds, the unemployment rate dropped, and the rate of bachelor degrees earned and the median household income increased. radio-tagging great blue herons to learn more about herons and their habitats. The student’s jobs, equipped with binoculars, minnow traps, and fish ID cards, is to locate a foraging heron in their area and then catch fish to use as bait to keep the herons coming back to the site. IFW wildlife biologist Danielle D’Auria, and a small team of researchers will then capture the herons using foothold traps set near the bait, and tag each bird with a GPS transmitter to monitor their movements for years to come.

The project is just one part of IFW’s ongoing research into the state’s great blue heron population. The great blue heron is a Species of Special Concern for IFW due to the decline in the number of nesting pairs on Maine’s coastal islands from the 1980s to 2007. In order to learn more about great blue heron daily movements, habitat use, colony fidelity, migration routes, and wintering locations, the department began a citizen science adopt-a-colony program called the Heron Observation Network. findings from that program. The GPS transmitters on the herons transmit GPS locations via the cell phone network to an open source website (www. movebank.org). Being solar-powered, they are expected to provide at least three years of data for each tagged heron. Fully charged, the units collect 288 GPS points and 360 behavioral (accelerometry) tracings per 24-hour period. The data will be made public on the website to use in education and help in making management decisions. There is also a free app called “Animal Tracker that

allows anyone to track the birds (and other species) on a smartphone. D’Auria is working with Dr. John Brzorad of Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina who has been using these same transmitters since 2013 and has paired nearly 20 birds (great egrets and great blue herons) with school systems in five other states. ~ News ~ Jenkins Becomes ‘Exemplary Volunteer of the Year’ WELLS The Wells-Ogunquit CSD held its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Strawberry Shortcake Social on June 9. This event is held near the close of school for summer recess to thank school volunteers for their service throughout the school year. In addition, one person from the volunteer group is recognized at the social for being Exemplary Volunteer of the Year. This year, Barbara Jenkins received the Exemplary Volunteer Award for 2015-2016. Approximately 40 volunteers attended the event hosted by Maryanne Foley, Community Resource Coordinator for the District. According to Foley, volunteers as a whole contribute “thousands of hours of time assisting teachers and students in the District’s schools. At one point, Jenkins was presented with a strawberry plant from Foley as a token of

Her dedication to the School Volunteer Program and willingness to support children’s learning has benefited many students and teachers.

Also speaking to the group of volunteers was WOCSD Superintendent Jim Daly and retiring Principal of Wells Elementary School Marianne Horne.
