Five-O Owners Plan October Sale to Three Employees By Nancye Tuttle Contributing Writer OGUNQUIT – In a town famous for stellar dining, Five-O shines. It’s been that way since 2004, when Donato Tramuto and Jeff Porter purchased the year-round, fine dining establishment at 50 Shore Road and set high standards for excellent cuisine, ambience and service. And the partners, who also own the neighboring Caffe Prego and the Inn on Shore Road, don’t anticipate their expectations will change this fall when they sell Five-O to employees Gary Pucciarelli, James Walter and Eric Varrell. The private sale, for an

undisclosed amount, is effective October 1. “We’ve talked about pass-

ing the reins on for a couple of years and could have put it on the open market. But we care

about our customers and employees and feel this team will continue to provide the same great food, drinks and hospitality that Five-O is known for, said Tramuto, an international healthcare executive and founder of the not-for-profit Tramuto Foundation. The three new owners are all long-time Five-O employees with years of experience in the dining and hospitality industry. Gary Pucciarelli, vicepresident and general manager, is a 30-year veteran, who previously worked in Portland and Kennebunkport establishments. He moved to Ogunquit in the early 2000s to work with Five-O’s previous owner,

Wayne Wescott, and stayed when Porter and Tramuto purchased it in 2004. “I liked them as people and businessmen and decided to stay when they bought FiveO. I also owe my family a debt of gratitude for putting up with the long hours I put in, he said. Executive chef James Walter put Five-O on the map with his outstanding cuisine that focuses on locally sourced American dishes with Italian influences. “I’ve cooked all my life, moved out west for a short time and worked in a couple of resorts before coming to Five-O, See FIVE-O page 25...

~ News ~ Veterans Helping Veterans Seeking Volunteers YORK COUNTY Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s Vet to Vet project has just celebrated its first year in operation as a provider of “friendly visitors” to veterans in York and Cumberland Counties. Thirty volunteers, who are veterans themselves, visit veterans who have disabilities, are isolated, or are struggling with aging and other issues. The volunteers visit in the veterans’ homes and provide needed companionship, chat and swap stories, go out for coffee or lunch, and make referrals to other services when needed. With a lengthy waiting list of veterans requesting visi-

tors, Vet to Vet is working to expand its team of volunteers. A training course to prepare volunteers for their role as visitors will be held Sept. 10, 15, and 17, from 5-8 pm at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Route One, Scarborough. Volunteers in this peerbased program must have served in the military themselves. Each volunteer is assigned one veteran to visit in the veteran’s home at least twice a month. The volunteers provide needed companionship to veterans. In addition the volunteers learn how and where to refer their veterans for other services if needed. Anyone who has served in

the military and would like to help another veteran is urged to contact SMAA about becoming a Vet to Vet volunteer. To sign up as a volunteer or for more information about Vet to Vet, contact Susan Gold via email at sgold@smaaa.org or by phone at 207-396-6521. The program is also seek-

ing young veterans in York and Cumberland Counties who would benefit from a veteran mentor, who would visit them at their home. For more information about the program and volunteer opportunities, call or visit SMAA’s website at http:// smaaa.org/veterans.html.

storemuseum.org. This program accompanies the Brick Store Museum’s Victory Garden, now in its second year. During World War II, many homes across the United States planted and maintained Victory Gardens that grew more food than what was needed for one season. Pickling and drying was the principle way to preserve food into winter and early spring and ensure that ration coupons could be stretched. The museum’s mission in providing this workshop is to educate the public in not only the art and techniques of pickling and drying food but also the many advantages that accompany it. The Victory Garden will run through Fall 2015, and will be open to the public anytime the Museum is open.

YORK – On Saturday, July 18, the York Beach Fire Department will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a firemen’s parade and muster. Beginning at 11 a.m. the parade will run from Atlantic Ave in York Beach to

the York high School via Long Beach Ave and Webber Rd. At noon at the high school there will be a firefighters muster, food and friendship. All are welcome to attend, watch the events, check out the fire apparatus and enjoy the day.

wick was anchored by the site of South Berwick Railroad Station at the present intersection of Main Street and Route 236. From about 1850 until 1950, the railroad ran past the church where Route 236 from Kittery meets Main Street today. The Portsmouth, Saco & Portland Company built this railroad, connecting Eliot and South Berwick to Portland and Boston.

Many tales and littleknown facts collected since South Berwick’s founding in 1814 are in store for the visitor in the new exhibit. On the night of July 25-26, 1870, for instance, much of downtown burned to the ground in a fire that citizens fought with buckets dunked in a nearby stream. In 1951, another fire destroyed town hall, including hundreds of municipal records. The building was a former Universalist Church that stood near the present location of South Berwick Post Office. The structure was one of several former town halls located in former schools and churches—including the present town hall building, built in 1926 as St. Michael’s Parochial School. The Counting House regular weekend hours continue through mid-October. Also at the Counting House are an archaeology display, an exhibit on trades of South Berwick from the 1600s through the 1900s, and a World War II love story. For more information or to schedule a visit outside the regular weekend hours, is available from the Old Berwick Historical Society at info@oldberwick.org or 207-384-0000.

~ News ~ Marcia Ciorra Named ‘Exemplary Volunteer’ of Year WELLS – The Wells-Ogunquit CSD has named school volunteer Marcia Ciorra Exemplary Volunteer of the Year for the 20142015 school year. This was announced at the District’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Ice Cream Social for District volunteers on June 11th. In 2014-2015, volunteers logged a combined 3,000 hours working in the District. “She goes above and beyond expected volunteering, commented Community Resource Coordinator Maryanne Foley about Ciorra who volunteers at Wells Elementary School. “Even if it is not her child’s classroom, Marcia is always willing to help other teachers with special projects. It is Foley who has been receiving, training, tracking and assigning volunteers to their appropriate jobs for over twenty years. “I wasn’t expecting an award but am honored to have been chosen, commented Ciorra. “By volunteering I’ve had the chance to give something back to the community, and as a bonus I have the pleasure of getting to know the wonderful teachers and school staff at WES, as well as many of the kids who will grow up alongside my children. “Without you guys we

would not be able to do what we do, commented Foley, one of the speakers to address and thank the group for the work that they do. About 20-25 volunteers as well as Foley, WES Principal Marianne Horne, WES Assistant Principal Ken Spinney, and Interim WOCSD Superintendent Jim Daly attended this function. “It takes a village and you’re a big part of that Village, said Assistant Principal Ken Spinney to the group. District volunteers are made up of retired community members, parents, and students from Wells Junior High School, Wells High School and York County Community College.

According to Foley, volunteers give whatever time that they want as clerical, classroom, library and/or project assistants. Volunteers generally begin work in the fall and can be found throughout the year working in classrooms, the computer lab, the Art room, Library or wherever else they may be needed. Foley pointed out that one significant project that Ciorra took on was to photograph and upload 1,500 pieces of student art work to Artsonia, a large online museum of student art work. Anyone interested in volunteering through the Volunteer Program should contact Maryanne Foley in September at WES at 207-646-5953, ext. 4204.

An exemplar is “The Little Mermaid, which debuted on Broadway in 2008. It was based on Disney’s own 1989 animated film, which itself was very loosely based on the classic 1837 fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The stage version has a book by Doug Wright, music

by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater. It has been making the rounds of regional companies for several years. Surprisingly, “The Little Mermaid hasn’t been produced in Maine until this summer. The wait is over: Arundel Barn Playhouse just opened a splendid professional production of this tuneful and visually dazzling romance that will be a high point of the summer for many families. Per the usual Disney formula, the book is slickly crafted, highly contrived and chock-full of colorful comic characters. Here’s the basic setup: A handsome young prince (Eric Leiggi) seeks to avoid the responsibilities of becoming king. Instead he’d rather sail the seven seas, but his older guardian (John Manzo) urges him to settle down and marry. The title character (Caroline Keegan) is the teenage daughter of King Triton (David Dennison); she yearns to leave her watery world behind and become a human. Soon a storm tosses the prince overboard, and he’s rescued by the Little Mermaid. It’s love a first sight for the pair, but many complications stand in the way of marital bliss. These include a wicked Sea Witch (Brigette E. Estola) and her two evil eel-lackeys (Brian

Finnerty and Jacob Rice) who aim to disrupt the budding romance. But the Little Mermaid’s friends -- a crab (Ben Ciordi), seagull (Curtis Reynolds) and flounder (Lucy Breton) -- help overcome obstacles and gain the happy denouement. I was utterly charmed by Keegan in the dual role of ingenue and protagonist, and also hugely impressed by Estola, energetically portraying her arch-enemy. Other notable performances are given by Ciordi, Reynolds and Breton. The latter is a winsome 10-year-old from Wells. Costuming is a high point of “The Little Mermaid. Jordan New’s brilliant and colorful designs simply coruscate through the rustic old barn. For starters, the five mermaid costumes -adorning the title character and her four “mersisters -- feature slinky floor-length skirts execut-

ed in lustrous aquamarine with large hooped flounces that suggest a fishtail. New’s crab costume, an eye-popping shade of red, is notable for its many details, while her seagull design emphasizes the character’s comic traits. Most striking of all is New’s inspired squid costume, worn by the evil villain of the show. The squid look starts with full-length dress made of dark purple-black fabric that brilliantly shimmers with sequins. Eight massive tentacles dangle from the waistline, flowing with the character’s every sinuous movement.

Also joining the cast is two-time Emmy Award winner Sally Struthers as the Dutchess Estonia, a temperance enforcer who is set against a gang of bootleggers in this madcap musical comedy set during the Roaring Twenties. house and was nominated in 2012 for 10 Tony Awards, winning two. This high-stepping Broadway musical recalls the golden age of American musicals, complete with extravagant dance numbers, glittering Broadway costumes and a treasure trove of George and Ira Gershwin’s most beloved songs, including “But Not For Me, “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, “I’ve Got a Crush on You and “Someone to Watch Over Me. This sparkling tale combines laughter, romance and Broadway magic for an evening bursting with girls, glamour and the glorious songs of the Gershwins. The champagne

is flowing and the gin is fizzing with a cast of outrageous characters who gather in New York City to celebrate the wedding of wealthy playboy Jimmy Winter, played by Joey Sorge, whose world is suddenly turned upside down by bootleggers, rumrunners and gold diggers thanks to the feisty streetwise Billie Bendix, played by Amanda Lea LaVergne, and the fast-talking, wise-cracking bootlegger Cookie McGee played by James Beaman. Television icon Valerie Harper makes her Ogunquit Playhouse debut in the role of Millicent Winter, who pressures her son Jimmy to marry someone respectable or she

will disinherit him. She began her career on Broadway as a dancer and went on to study and perform with Chicago’s Second City Theatre before landing the role of Rhoda Morgenstern in the hit television series The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which led to her own television series Rhoda. Harper went on to appear in multiple television shows and films including another series Valerie, as well as the TV shows Touched by an Angel, Sex and the City and That '70s Show, the films Freebie and the Bean, The Last Married Couple in America, Blame it on Rio and the television movies Mary and Rhoda with Mary Tyler Moore, Thursday’s Game with See STARS page 25...

Noted Artists Open at Black Bear Fine Art Gallery OGUNQUIT – Don Gorvett’s Black Bear Fine Art Gallery is opening an exhibition with the works of two artists: Homage to Stuart Nudelman, nationally recognized abstract photographer along with William F. Duffy, nationally recognized sculptor presenting new works along with an artist’s talk on July 19, 1-4 p.m. The show will run three weeks. Refreshments will be served. Stuart Nudelman, Oct. 6, 1931 - March 28, 2014, is recognized for realizing pure shape, form and color of common objects around us and presenting these images as abstractions through color photography. A lifelong photographer, Nudelman was the Ogunquit Art Association’s first juried photographer, and whose career(s)

revolved around the art world as an education administrator in New York, photojournalist and an arts columnist for the York County Coast Star in York Maine. This show coincides with the Maine Photo Project, a statewide collaboration between museums and galleries. William Duffy, a sculptor from the mid-Atlantic region, who's large-scale public work explores the universality of the human form and its relationship to the environment will exhibit his new work. Duffy has been exploring the underlying forms in nature and exposing the intrinsic elegant geometries through abstract mathematical concepts. Duffy will be giving a talk about his new work. “Both artists are extremely visionary in their points of view and are masters of their mediums. The

works in this show represent a lifelong exploration of the abstract one observes in recognizable imagery, explains Mr. Gorvett. Black Bear Fine Art Gallery is holding exhibitions throughout the summer and into November, and is located at 100B Perkins Cove Rd, Ogunquit. Know Before You Go: Keeping your Social Security number card in a safe place is vital to protecting you against identity theft. Never keep it in your purse or wallet — this is the most common way people lose their card. No matter how hard you try to keep track of your important documents, sometimes they get lost or even stolen. Getting a replacement Social Security number card is free, but you will have to provide the proper documents to get a new one. Being prepared will save you time at the Social Security office or card center. If you are replacing your card, you will need original or certified copies of the required documents, which include: Proof of citizenship: If you have not already established your U.S. citizenship with us, we need to see proof of U.S. citizenship. We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship, like your U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport. Identity: We can accept only certain documents as proof of identity. An acceptable document must be current (not expired) and show your name, identifying information (date of birth or age), and preferably, a recent photograph. For example, as proof of identity, we must see your: U.S. driver’s license; State-issued non-driver identification card; or U.S. passport. If you do not have one

of these specific documents, or you cannot get a replacement for one of them within ten days, we will ask to see other documents, including a(n): Employee identification card; School identification card; Health insurance card (not Medicare card); or U.S. military identification card. Remember, you are limited to three replacement cards in a year or ten in your lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in immigration status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. For more information about replacing a lost or stolen Social Security number card, go to www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber.

Answer: Even if your spouse has never worked under Social Security, she can, at full retirement age, receive a benefit equal to onehalf of your full retirement amount. Your wife is eligible for reduced spouse’s benefits as early as age 62, as long as you are already receiving benefits. For more information, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ retire. Question: Do I have to give my Social Security number whenever I’m asked? Answer: Giving your Social Security number is voluntary. If requested, you should ask why the person asking needs your Social Security number, how it will be used, what law requires you to give your number, and what the consequences are if you refuse. The answers to these questions can help you decide whether to give your Social Security number. However, the decision is yours. Keep in mind that requestors might not provide you their services if you refuse to provide your Social Security number. This Sunday, Cocheco Valley Humane Society will be in attendance to promote discounted adoptions and veterinary services for veterans through the national nonprofit Pets For Patriots. "This is a really exciting collaboration for Kittery Community Market, as so many of our community members are part of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard," says market manager, Kris Bowden. Pets for Patriots, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to bringing pets and people together in a lifelong bond of mutual friendship, loyalty and love. Their goal is to

make the benefits of shelter pet adoption a reality for military personnel, ensuring many years of friendship, companionship and joy with their honorably adopted dog or cat. Make a donation at http://petsforpatriots. org. Cocheco Valley Humane Society is a community-funded, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting the humane treatment of animals in Strafford County, NH and Southern Maine. They provide a safe, temporary home for more than 1,500 surrendered, lost, abused, neglected, or unwanted animals each year. Their mission is to provide quality, compassionate care and shelter to our animals, in partnership with educating the community concerning humane animal treatment and welfare. friendly and enjoys attention. When she’s not, it’s best to just let her relax and do her own thing. She’s lived a long life and has earned the right to decide when she wants attention. At heart, Penelope is a sweet and elegant madam who would love to find a new home to spend her golden years in. She would very much prefer not to live with dogs, though would be happy with respectful children. If this darling senior sounds like the right one for you, then stop by the shelter. Meet Pepsi, an adult Holland Lop Rabbit. The Holland Lop is known for its sweet temperament, non-aggressive

behavior, and of course, their low hanging ears. Pepsi has all of these in spades. He is a very easy-going fellow and enjoys being visited by people. Give him a habitat filled with all the rabbit necessities and he’ll be the happiest hare around. Pepsi would make a fine addition to just about any household. If you’d like to adopt Pepsi, stop by the shelter today to meet him.

A Voice for Animals YORK – Meet Ben, a handsome, sleek and shiny, all black, neutered senior cat looking for a forever home. He had been loved and part of a family since he was a kitten. His owner had to move after losing his job and could not take his beloved cats with him. Since his world has been turned upside down, he has been in a foster home and has adjusted well. He gets along with the other cats and is friendly to his foster people as well. Although foster life is good, Ben needs his very own family. Please help Ben know what it is like to have his own home again... a forever home.

she can be loose, loved and pampered. Her thyroid meds are easily administered, so don’t let that scare you away. Call Lisa at 207-281-3978 and find out more about gorgeous Gracie! Local kitties in need get the loving care they need at Safe Haven’s new Adoption Center. Example: Choco, a refugee from a local trailer court, arrived in pain, needing eye surgery, dental work and a neutering. His surgery went fine. His eyes can finally open wide, showing off his beautiful blue eyes. A gentle Chocolate Point Siamese, he’s feeling so much better now that the pain he endured for years is over. What he craves now is a temporary foster home - or better yet, a permanent home! Choco’s sad because he wants constant attention, and pouts until he gets it. Make this darling fellow happier by fostering or adopting him. Call Lisa at 207-281-3978 to schedule a meet-up. We’re taking in so many kitties who are hungry and/ or in need of medical care. Kittens have huge appetites and need several meals a day, as do nursing momma cats. Our food cupboards empty quickly. Please donate Friskies canned food, preferably poultry (not fish). Drop them at our Thrift Shop, next to the Wells IGA on Rt. 1, or at our Adoption Center at 1420 Post Road. Donating your returnable bottles and cans help us pay for cat food, litter and veterinary care. Please drop them off at our Adoption Center. The driveway is right next to the Wells Library. (Please, no out-of-state bottles -we’ll have to pay a $100 fine!) We have many wonderful “cat room buddies” but could use a few more “cat caregivers” to help clean, feed and scoop. Please call Leonore at 207-9853227 to learn more. Our Thrift Shop needs more linens -- all our bedding is sold out! Please donate sheets, blankets, throws, comforters, but only ones in good condition please. Also welcome are ladies and men’s seasonal clothing in good, clean condition, household items, handbags, curtains (no drapes). We really appreciate all your donations. But if you have more than five boxes, please call ahead, 207-229-8314.

Compounding Medications at South Berwick Pharmacy Seacoast Counpounding By Carin Lee Contributing Reporter SOUTH BERWICK The greater South Berwick area is lucky – it has had a continuously independently owned, hometown pharmacy for almost 40 years: the South Berwick Pharmacy Seacoast Compounding. Owner and pharmacist, Matthew Kenney, has come to know his customers, being a hometown boy and having grown up in the South Berwick community. Kenney said that his connections to the town gave him the courage to buy the pharmacy three years ago and people there have gone out of their way to support him. Kenney had previously worked in a chain store pharmacy, where he found himself increasingly disillusioned with the emphasis on numbers, doing more sales than the previous year, and less and less on relationships to customers. With his own store Kenney has been able to concentrate on building relationships with the people who come to him for their medication. The store prides itself

on the unique offering of compounding medications. Compounding is the art and science of making medicine from raw materials, according to a doctor’s specific prescription, customized for an individual patient’s needs. This is the way pharmacy used to be practiced: the local “chemist or “apothecary mixed everything by hand. With the advent of drug manufacturing in the 1960’s the pharmacist’s role changed to that of dispensing mass-produced medications, some of which do not meet

patients’ needs. Modern technology and innovative techniques have allowed pharmacists to custom make medications once again. South Berwick Pharmacy Seacoast Compounding now makes 25 percent of its medications the old-fashioned way. Kenney has over 780 formulas in his computer. In a sophisticated system, the laptop controls how medicines are made, not allowing the maker to go on to the next step without the right ingredients or accurate weight of the ingredients.

The funds raised locally will also allow the Maine Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to provide services such as a 24/7 Helpline, care consultation, support groups, education and advocacy services to all Mainers affected by memory disorders. ...COMPOUND from page 19 critical for compounding, said Kenney. He did an internship at Beth Israel Deaconess where he created medications for hospital patients’ IV’s. He also compounded medications for chemotherapy in the oncology department. There are many examples of how Kenney can create medications to meet specific needs. For autistic children and other kids who struggle with taking tablets or capsules, Kenney can make a lozenge or liquid or even a lollipop or popsicle form of the medication. He empowers kids by letting them choose their own flavors: blueberry, bubble gum, caramel, peppermint, marshmallow and many more. For patients who are allergic to drug companies’ dyes, fillers or preservatives, Kenney can make a pure form of a medication. Kenney also works with veterinarians to custom make medications. For dogs that regurgitate tablets he can make a liquid form that owners can spray on their pet’s food. He customizes flavors too: bacon, beef, liver, etc. For cats that can’t take tablets Kenney can make a cream form to put on the hairless part of the cat’s ear flap, where it is absorbed through the skin. The nearest compounding pharmacy is 50 miles away in Portland, so South Berwick Pharmacy Seacoast Compounding provides a valuable and local service.

Local Tobacco and Alcohol Retailers Recognized for Being Stars in Prevention NORTH BERWICK/ YORK Congratulations to Allard's Market in North Berwick and Long Sands General Store in York for becoming our most recent Star Stores! The objective of the Star Store program is to reduce the amount of minors' exposure to tobacco promotional messaging in retail stores (such as special price and discount signage, free branded promotional items, and general tobacco company in-store posters, signs, and other visible logos). The Star Store program works in combination with NO BUTS! (Blocking Underage Tobacco Sales), the Maine CDC program to stop the illegal sale of tobacco to minors. CTBH [YOU]th was essential in the Star Store process for both stores. Youth met with the managers, conducted surveys, and recommended changes in tobacco signage and promotion. On June 15, the Choose To Be Healthy Coalition hosted a Responsible Beverage Server Training at the American Legion in York with five establishments in attendance: Sun and Surf, An-

~ News & Classifieds ~ Maine Children’s Cancer Program Picnic a Huge Success YORK Every year the York Elks Lodge #2788 holds a picnic at the York Wild Kingdom for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP). Over 300 MCCP kids and their families attended this year’s picnic, held on June 27. The children were treated to amusement park rides, the zoo and free BBQ manned by members of the York Elks Lodge. After lunch a huge raffle was held while clown Don St Pierre entertained the youngsters with his balloon tying talent. Over $2500 will be donated to the Maine Elks Association major project: The Maine Children's Cancer Program. While raising money is an important part of this event, the main goal is to provide them with a fun day to experience

together, and hopefully leave behind their worries for a while. Appreciation and thanks go out to everyone who contributed food, supplies and raffle

prizes for this yearly fundraiser, and to Jean and the York Wild Kingdom for all their help in coordinating this event. Thanks to those who do-

Pictured left to right: Linda Parsons of Limerick; her daughter, Janice Teasenfitz of Limerick; and Starr Bartlett of Sanford. Agent Recognized for Outstanding Volunteerism KENNEBUNK – Allstate agency owner Heidi Johnston received the Agency Hands in the Community Award for her commitment to helping others. With this award came a $1,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation for the Lucky Pup Rescue Inc. in Kennebunk, where Heidi Johnston volunteers. Allstate agents and employees have a proud history of putting their good hands to

work in supporting Maine communities, promoting volunteerism and providing financial resources to enable local organizations to help others. “The Agency Hands in the Community Award celebrates the spirit of service. Commitment to our communities is a natural extension of what we do every day – protecting people and making their lives more secure” said Julia Reusch. “With support from The All-

state Foundation, Heidi Johnston and the Lucky Pup Rescue Inc. are making her hometown a better, safer place to live. The Allstate Foundation awards more than $1 million every year to nonprofit organizations across the country in honor of dedicated Allstate agency owners who give back. To be eligible for nomination, Allstate agency owners must with volunteer, mentor or lead a nonprofit of their choice.

Selectman Robert Foley Honored with Service Award

Lisa Erickson-Harris Hired as Great Works First Executive Director OGUNQUIT Great Works is working hard to conserve resources all over its six-town region of Berwick, North Berwick, South Berwick, Eliot, Ogunquit and Wells. In 2014, the Land Trust protected fourteen new properties, adding to the thousands of acres conserved within our region. This year is shaping up as another active year for farmland and forest conservation. To support its growth, Great Works has hired its first executive director, Lisa Erickson-Harris, adding to recent Board additions as it manages many collaborative conservation efforts in southern Maine. Great Works has ambitious goals to protect nearly 1,400 acres of farmland and over 700 acres within its Mount Agamenticus Region. EricksonHarris, together with existing and newly appointed board members, brings added leadership, management, fundraising and land protection expertise; all of which are critical to its success. Erickson-Harris became Great Work’s first Executive Director earlier this year. She is working closely with its Board of Directors to lead and manage the organization as it expands its capacity, fiscally and operationally. Erickson-Harris brings more than twenty years of business and non-profit experience, advising executives and managing technology partnerships, skills she

will leverage to strengthen dayto-day operations and build financial capacity necessary for Great Works’ growth. She lives in Kennebunk with her two sons and has great appreciation for the New England landscape, having served as board member and chairperson for the Alton (NH) Conservation Commission, and a passion for land protection that dates back to her childhood. Over nearly ten years she helped the Commission establish a town forest, accept conservation easements, create baseline documentation for conservation properties, develop a trail system, and initiate a program with the local elementary school to educate students about invasive species. Erickson-Harris is particularly appreciative of Great Works’ partner-oriented initiatives including its collaborations with the Mount Agamenticus to the Sea Initiative and Maine Farmland Trust, to name just two organizations. “While Great Works is a sixtown organization, its multiple partnerships are reflective of its larger vision, to conserve beyond its borders where resources flow and become part of the greater good,” said Erickson-Harris. With the vision comes the need for financial sustainability so she will be working with the Board and other supporters to fund the long-term needs of Great Works. Recently, she

was awarded a prestigious scholarship to the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies for a week-long Conservation Finance Boot Camp for this June. This is an “intensive week-long course, which aims to help professionals utilize innovative and effective financing strategies for land resource conservation, restoration, and stewardship.” As more aggressive fundraising and communitybuilding plans are put in place, Great Works hopes to attract more volunteers to engage in its efforts. Anyone in the community that is passionate about the value of open space and natural resources and has interest in supporting Great Works efforts is welcome to contact us with their interest. The most needed skills are in fundraising, community-building, event support and stewardship. Since 1986, Great Works has conserved over 5,700 acres of land in Berwick, North Berwick, South Berwick, Eliot, Ogunquit, and Wells. The membership supported nonprofit also hosts fundraising events and offers a series of hikes (visit www.gwrlt.org), some in cooperation with the Gateway to Maine Outside collaboration.

WELLS Selectman Robert Foley was honored with service award plaque during his last Selectmen Meeting in June in Wells for his 15 years of service to the Town of Wells as a Selectman and Chairman for several terms. Foley was elected in November 2014 as the State Representative from Wells and is presently representing the community in Augusta.

The Bank of Maine Sponsors Free Admission to Museum for Customers KENNEBUNK – The Bank of Maine has joined with the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk to invite its customers to visit the museum for free during the month of July. Banking customers visiting the museum only need to show their credit or debit card to receive free admission as part of the BSM on Us program. “We are so proud to welcome customers of The Bank of Maine to the museum,” said museum director Cynthia Walker. “History and art must be shared by all of us. The bank’s commitment to our community is wonderful, and we couldn’t be more excited that new audiences can attend the museum because of what The Bank of Maine is offering to its customers.” “Art and cultural icons,

such as the Brick Store Museum, are an important part of the fabric of our communities,” said John W. Everets, Chairman and CEO of the Bank of Maine. “We are proud to provide our customers the opportunity to enjoy some of the cultural treasures in which Kennebunk is so rich.” The Bank of Maine customers (and all visitors) can expect to find exciting exhibitions this month: Visual Storytelling: Celebrating Maine Illustrators, Memory in Black & White: Turn of the Century Photographs of Albion Moody (part of the Maine Photo Project), and Kennebunk History in 50 Objects are all on view during the month of July, and are running through September. The Brick Store Museum is located at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk’s historic district.

SANFORD – This baseball season, home runs hit by the Red Sox are a big home run for local nonprofit organizations. SIS Bank has pledged to donate $50 to a local nonprofit for every home run the Red Sox hit each month at Fenway Park. The donations are part of the Bank’s new “Home Runs for Good campaign, a collaboration between the Bank and WBLMFM of Portland. During April, the Red Sox hit nine home runs at Fenway, leading to a $450 donation to the Acton Backpack Program, the campaign’s April recipient. The Acton Backpack Program provides public school students in Acton, Maine with a backpack full of nourishing food each Friday to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle through the weekend.

“SIS Bank is happy to contribute to a great organization like the Acton Backpack Program. They perform vital work in the community by supporting children and families in need, said SIS Bank President and CEO Mark T. Mickeriz. “Home Runs for Good gives us another reason to cheer for the Red Sox, and we’re hoping for big home run totals all season long. The May “Home Runs for Good charity is the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery Association. Donations for June, July and August will go to York County Shelter Programs, Inc., Waban Projects, and Willowbrook Village, respectively. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I have a router connected to my computer in my basement and an extender connected to the router. The extender is on a long cable and placed elsewhere in the basement close to an outside wall as close as I can get it to where my daughter uses her laptop in a studio apartment close to my house. (Her laptop is perhaps 50 feet in a straight line from the extender.) She not infrequently has trouble accessing the Internet; sometimes she pushes the reset buttons on the router and the extender and that corrects the problem; sometimes not. My question is: do routers and extenders come in different “strengths and would a “stronger router and/or extender likely solve this problem? Thank you very much, Henry

Dear Henry, Yes, routers and extenders do come in different strengths, and that is something you can try, but first, I would try a less expensive remedy. When you set up a wi-fi router and/or extender the signal covers an area that is kind of shaped like an umbrella. Having your extender in the basement can limit the reach of the signal for a couple of reasons. First the signal has to go through thick basement walls, and secondly it is not high enough to give you good coverage. Moving your router or extender to a higher level in your house will give you a better range, so try moving them higher in your house before you go out and purchase a stronger one. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I have lost my list for short

Dear Computer Lady, Is there any way to turn up the volume more on my laptop? When I go to play some videos

Dear Janice, Here are the shortcuts again: Ί = Alt + 0189 Âş = Alt + 0188 ĂŚ = Alt + 0190 Š = Alt + 0169 Æ = Alt + 0174 Ă´ = Alt + 0153 ∞ = Alt + 0176 Ă– = Alt + 0133 ¢ = Alt + 0162 Ăœ = Alt + 0134 â = Alt + 0137. Remember that you have to hold down the Alt key while typing in the numbers, and you must use the number keypad on the right of your keyboard, this will not work with the row of numbers at the top of your keyboard. from Facebook, the volume is up high on the videos and the volume on my laptop is as high as it will go but I still have problems hearing it well. Is there any way I can make it louder? Thank you, Ruth Dear Ruth, If the volume on the video and the volume on your laptop are both turned all the way up, and you still can’t hear the video, you will have to look at ways outside of your laptop to increase the volume. You could try plugging in headphones; this would eliminate interference from your surroundings, and make it easier to hear. You could also try an external speaker. I used to use a small USB powered speaker with my laptop when watching movies in my sewing room. (Now I watch them on my iPad and the volume is just fine). One or both of those items should make it easier for you to hear your videos. If you

are using headphones, be careful that you don’t damage your ears when a regular volume video plays really loudly. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I don’t know how it happened, but whenever I open up MS Word, an old letter pops up. I don’t know how to delete it as I have searched for a delete feature among the toolbars but haven’t found one. I have tried to delete all of the words on the document and save it that way, but that only makes me save it as another document. I can bring up a blank document, but that only comes up a second document. I want it back the way it was with a blank document as document 1. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this letter and back to the original default blank document? Thanks, Martin Dear Martin, It sounds like you have saved your old letter as the default template in Word. Fortunately, the solution is fairly easy. All you have to do is find the normal.dot (or normal.dotm depending on what version of Word you are using) file and delete it. After you delete the normal.dot file, Word will automatically create a new, blank document templete the next time you open it.
