STATEWIDE The natural beauty of American gardens is being celebrated by the U.S. Postal Service by issuing stamps that feature gardens ranging from botanical to country estate and municipal gardens. All the gardens featured on the 10 stamps are open to the public. The American Gardens Forever stamps are available now for purchase. The 20 stamps feature 10 different photographs taken between 1996 and 2014. The gardens include: Biltmore Estate Gardens (North Carolina); Brooklyn Botanic Garden (New York); Chicago Botanic Garden (Illinois); Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (Maine); Dumbarton Oaks Garden (District of Columbia); The Huntington Botanical Gardens (California); Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park (Florida); Norfolk Botanical Garden (Virginia); Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens (Ohio); and Win-

terthur Garden (Delaware). Every year, millions of Americans visit gardens, public and private. Many public gardens are open year-round; in addition to the plants and trees on display, classes, exhibits, and other events encourage visitors to experiment and create their own gardens. During the spring and summer, planned tours and open garden days allow visitors to step into private enclaves and see how homeowners have enhanced and designed their spaces, be they large estates, small suburban yards, or rooftop aeries. The stamps can be purchased via www.usps.com/ americangardens.

This family-friendly, virtual concert event will air live, nationwide on the WAA Official Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/ WAAHQ) on Sunday, July 19, at 7 p.m. and will feature patriotic musical guests who are supportive and appreciative of our country’s veterans and their families. The event will include a special message from Operation Red Wing lone survivor, United States Navy SEAL (RET) Marcus Luttrell and his

Performers will include, but are not limited to: Craig Morgan, Chris Roberts, Lindsay Lawler, Mark Wills, The Bellamy Brothers, The Don Campbell Band, Darryl Worley and Six-String Soldiers. The event will also feature WAA Sponsorship Groups – likeminded civic and youth groups, veteran service organizations, and other nonprofits – around the country who partner with WAA to raise funds and awareness in their own communities about

The new education programs kick off Monday, July 27 and include offerings for students ages 5 through adult. Professional teaching artists from the Ogunquit Playhouse stage, Broadway, National Tours, and leading Regional Theaters lead each program, which are designed for small groups. In addition, each student will have the opportunity to sign up for sessions that include only one to three people. Program enrollment began on Thursday, July 16, and continues Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.

the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. Throughout the live event, viewers will have the opportunity to support these local groups and participating cemeteries in their hometowns. The Sponsorship Groups are part of a program where $5 of each $15 wreath sponsorship received goes back to them to be used locally for programs in their own community. Through this national program, WAA has given back more than $12M in local contributions over the last 11 years. “WAA recognizes Giving in July as opposed to the wellknown Christmas in July because our program works with local sponsorship groups in communities across the country who are giving back, year-round,” said Karen Worcester, Executive Director, WAA. “The local programs that benefit from this fundraising are oftentimes the bridge to keeping community-based veteran initiatives going in small

towns. Through your support of WAA now, both nationally and on the local level, you are not only placing a wreath for a hero in December, but helping give back to these community efforts who need support.” All donations received from this event will be used to sponsor fresh, balsam veterans’ wreaths to be placed by volunteers on National Wreaths Across America Day, December 19, at more than 2,100 locations nationwide.

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization’s mission – Remember, Honor, Teach – is carried out in part each year by coordinating the wreath-laying ceremonies. For more information, visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Counting House Museum Open by Appointment

SOUTH BERWICK The Counting House Museum in South Berwick is now open by appointment for viewing of the permanent exhibit, “Village Voices”, and the current exhibit, “Our Stories: Talking about Tatnic”, in its final season. Family groups of up to four people are welcome for appointments, and guests are asked to wear face masks. “Where is Tatnic?” local poet Beulah Fenderson Smith

wrote. “Tatnic is where the lilac blossoms blow sweet Maytime air; where yellow apples fall to the waiting deer in the thin November twilight...” Or as others have said, “Tatnic is a state of mind.” Learn about life in the northeastern corner of South Berwick, where farming families have populated the landscape since the settlers of the early 1700’s. Young families, and the unique Tatnic landscape. Those who moved “upcountry” in the 18th century took advantage of all the resources on their properties: timber, marsh grasses, tillage and pasture lands, streams for mill power, quarrying for stone and iron ore, trapping, fruit trees, hard spirits and maple syrup production and winter ice harvesting. The Tatnic area features a volcanic caldera, dramatic granite ledges, wetlands and forests. Tucked away in the ancient landscape there are remains of original farmsteads. This exhibit touches on the lives of the people of Tatnicpast and present- through maps, journals, deeds, photos, artifacts and stories. Old York Walking Tour YORK From its indigenous people to European settlement and incorporation as one of America’s first cities, York has a long and fascinating history. As the center of government for Colonial Maine, the people of this place first known by its Abenaki name of Agamenticus, experienced much turmoil at the frontier between Colonial New England and French Canada. This walking tour of Old York, at the center of York Village, will ex-

plore our earliest roots as well as the farming and maritime trades that developed. The tour begins promptly at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 18 at the Lindsay Road entrance, lasts approximately 45 minutes, and covers a three-block area along York Street. Price is $10 adult, $5 child, free for members. The terrain is uneven, and comfortable shoes are recommended. In case of inclement weather, the tour is cancelled and tickets will be refunded, or credited towards another scheduled tour. This tour is limited to eight people, and guests must pre-register online (this includes members) at https://oldyork.simpletix.com/e/55416. No tickets will be sold at the door. Old York is committed to the safety of our visitors and staff. In order to limit the spread of the coronavirus, all current safety measures, including masks, will be implemented.

Tips For Making Workplaces Safe The offices, warehouses, and manufacturing plants that America’s workers are starting to return to may look the same as they did months ago, but the feel inside will be largely different. The coronavirus has changed the workplace environment as we knew it for the foreseeable future. Companies welcoming back employees to their facilities are subject to a duty of care that requires new protocols and rules necessary to protect the health of their workforce. While there is no perfect plan, knowing the priorities and putting extra attention on detailed health measures are paramount for all employers, says Dr. Jonathan Spero (www.inhousephysicians. com), a physician and expert on pandemic preparedness and employee health. “As employers begin creating a COVID-19 back-to-work program for their organizations, it is clear that there is no proven roadmap,” Dr. Spero says. “We cate teenagers on the risks of dangerous driving. are in uncharted territory. “People are concerned when they get up in the morning that they are going to be exposed to COVID-19. The only way to solve it is to take a lesson out of the global public health playbook and establish proven health security strategies. This involves three foundational elements: the prevention of illness, the detection, and the response once you get the data to identify who’s ill or who has been infected in the past. Some people will get infected in the workplace, so the key is taking all the measures that can help keep the transmission rate way down.” Dr. Spero offers these tips to employers for developing a return-to-work plan: Reconfigure high-contact areas. Dr. Spero says continued social distancing and wearing masks in the office remain top priorities as the pandemic continues. “Until further notice office space needs to be designed so employees remain at least six feet from each other at all times,” he says. “There is no more mingling in groups, and people have to be spread out.” Daily temperature checks. “These are done before entry in the workplace,” Dr. Spero says. “Use no-contact, infrared therSee WORK page 9...

But fever is the most common symptom associated with COVID-19, so it makes sense to still check people’s temperatures. If they’re above normal, they’re sent home with a plan to refer the ill employee for follow-up medical evaluation and potentially COVID-19 testing.” Consider PCR testing. As states reopen businesses, some large companies are testing employees for COVID-19 while trying to prevent outbreaks on the job. Medical professionals and employers say this testing, known as PCR (Polymerase chain reaction), can help reduce transmissions and workers’ fears. Have a reporting and follow-up system. Dr. Spero says employees who test positive need to be enrolled in a returnto-work program. This involves quarantine protocols and work clearance guidelines on when the employee can return to work. Ramp up cleaning procedures. “There should be morning and evening routines of disinfecting all surfaces in the work area, including keyboards,” Dr. Spero says. “Frequent hand washing, use of hand sanitizer, and avoiding touching your face all are very important as employees come back to the office.” “Returning to a workplace does bring risks, and employers have a duty of care to mitigate these risks,” Dr. Spero says. “It’s imperative employers build a plan that reduces the risk of COVID-19 transmission.” Dr. Jonathan Spero (www.inhousephysicians.com) is a physician and an expert on pandemic preparedness and employee health. Gov. Mills Reenforces Face Covering Requirement

AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills issued an Executive Order requiring large retail businesses, restaurants, outdoor bars, tasting rooms, and lodging establishments in Maine’s more populous cities and coastal counties to enforce the State’s face covering requirement. The new Executive Order strengthens the enforcement component of the Governor’s face covering requirement. The Executive Order comes as Maine continues to reopen its economy and welcome visitors from other states. Scientific evidence demonstrates that wearing a face covering can significantly reduce the transmission of COVID-19, helping protect the health and safety of Maine people. “It is important that we

wear face coverings as people begin to interact more and more,” said Governor Mills. “Doing so can slow the spread of COVID19, protect the health and safety of those around us, support businesses and allow us to safely reopen our economy. I know it may be inconvenient for some, but I also believe that Maine people care about each other, and this simple gesture is a small price to pay for knowing you could save someone’s life.” Under an April Executive Order, individuals are required to wear face coverings in public places where physical distancing is difficult to maintain, as recommended by the U.S. CDC. In a May Executive Order, businesses were required to post readily visible signs notifying customers of

this face covering requirement and were permitted to deny entry or service to a person not wearing a covering. Today’s Executive Order strengthens that by mandating businesses require face coverings in retail stores with more than 50,000 square feet of shopping space, restaurants, outdoor bars or tasting rooms, and lodging establishments. It applies to businesses in the coastal counties of Hancock, Waldo, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Cumberland, and York, as well as in the cities of Bangor, Brewer, Lewiston, Auburn, and Augusta. The Executive Order focuses on these areas given the congregation of people in Maine’s larger cities as well as the influx See MASKS page 21...

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, How can I quickly set the password on my computer when I walk away from my desk for a few minutes? It is time consuming to log out and then back in every time I need to check the printer, greet a customer or use the restroom. I’m using Windows 10. Thanks, Mabel Dear Mabel Actually, there is a quick keyboard combination that you can use to lock your computer without logging you out. Just press the windows logo key (the flag symbol in the bottom row of your keyboard) and the letter L. This will lock your computer, and when you come back from the printer all you will have to do is press “enter” and type your password. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Got a new HP touch screen laptop (with Windows 10) last Christmas. Now, my 6-month-old laptop computer will only power up to a blue screen, with a small

message box, that tells me I need to insert the installation disc and reinstall everything! This new laptop did not come any installation disc (as did previous ones), so I don’t quite know what to do. Should I take it to a local repair shop, which would probably cost more than it’s worth, or should I contact HP and just ask for an installation disc? Don’t know if I’m I even entitled to a free installation disc for this 6 month old laptop, or not? PLEASE advise. Thank you for all your efforts to help us oldsters, Susan Dear Susan, I would contact HP. Not only should they have a disk for you, but if the computer is only 6 months old, it should still be under warranty. Most computer manufacturers keep recovery disks on hand for a couple of years, and should provide them to you for a small fee. I would tell HP about the blue screen because it sounds like there is some sort of hardware issue going on that a recovery disk alone will probably not fix.

Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there a way to access the old control panel in Windows 10? That would make my computer easier to use now that I have upgraded to 10. Thanks so much, June Dear June, There is an easy way to access the control panel in Windows 10. Just click on the start button (or tap the Windows logo key on your keyboard) and type “Control Panel”. A link to the control panel will appear in your start menu, just click on it to open. If you want to access some of the other tools that used to be easily accessible in Windows, you can use the keyboard combination, Windows logo key (the one with the flag on it in the bottom row) and the letter X. This will bring up a menu with tools like Device Manager, Task Manager, and Power options. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

I love your information, I would like your advice on purchasing a new computer. Is this the time of year, what model and version of windows would you recommend, what store the best? I would appreciate all the help, even if you say wait till the first of year. Thanks alot, Nancy Dear Nancy, While I can’t give you an exact model of computer to purchase, I can tell you what to look for. The speed of your computer is determined by two things, the processor and the RAM. I would suggest that you look for a computer with a quad core processor. Quad core means that there are actually 4 processors on the chip, all running at the same time. Think about it this way, you can fill a pool with one water hose, and it will take a long time. If you use 4 hoses, you can fill it in 1/4 the time. The amount of RAM determines how many things the computer can work on at once. I would suggest at least 6GB (giga-

bytes) of RAM. Stay away from computers that only come with 2GB of RAM. My work computer has 16GB of RAM. For the operating system, I would go with Windows 10. A Chromebook is limited to mostly online use, and I don’t have experience in Mac computers. Storage space on your computer, (your hard drive) should be at least 500GB, most computers will have a 1TB (terabyte) hard drive. If you are going to do graphics work, gaming, or watch a lot of videos, then you probably want a graphics card with extra memory on the card. As for where to purchase the computer, I would suggest a store with a good return policy (just in case you get a lemon) and a store that you know you can get good support at. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth.boston@ gmail.com.

AUGUSTA Central Maine Power Co. (CMP), a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR) announced the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) has authorized an annual adjustment of overall electric delivery prices for all CMP customers in Maine effective July 1. When all components of the annual price adjustment are combined, the resulting change will add approximately $2.50 to the average residential customer’s monthly bill.

“This annual adjustment primarily reflects unavoidable costs incurred in restoring power after two major back-to-back storms in October and November 2019, which resulted in 230,000 and 180,000 outages respectively. We understand it is our responsibility to balance our commitment to rapid and efficient storm response with the costs incurred to manage storm recovery promptly. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

KENNEBUNKS The Tailgate Picnics show pulled into southern Maine to scout out their next shoot at Coffee Roasters of the Kennebunks in lower village, Kennebunk. Co-hosts Elizabeth Perrin and Steven Riley had a great time exploring the area and getting a mini course in coffee bean roasting, along with a fruit kabob sword fight and a slice of dessert pizza! They were lent Billy the Willy, the owner’s

1949 Willy Wagon and packed their picnic basket with an array of salads made fresh daily at the store, an assortment of great cheeses, breads and a couple of bottles of balsamic vinegar and specialty oils. They left with the store’s famous coffee ice cubes in a tall ice coffee! Tailgate Picnics is Maine’s newest food, antique car, and travel show exploring great places to have picnics in New England.

Now More Than Ever, Recycling Is Critical STATEWIDE With concerns related to COVID-19 over grocery shopping, particularly for hard-to-find items like toilet paper and facial tissue, everyday recycling may fall down the list of priorities. But the paper and cardboard that residents put in the bin is more important than they might think. Once that material leaves the curb or transfer station, it becomes part of a global supply chain that depends on recyclables to meet the demand of manufacturers making these common products. Residential recycling is one way to create that supply. “Not only are we an essential service during this time,” said Kevin Roche, CEO of Ecomaine, “But it’s also critical that facilities such as ours stay operational to help meet the needs of the mills that need our fiber material, who, in turn, fulfill the needs of consumers. Ecomaine is taking precautions so that we can remain active, and we urge communities and businesses to continue recycling.” Ecomaine has continued to hear from manufacturers about shortages of material in some parts of the world, creating scarcity, due to the lack of regular feedstock. “It’s coming from all parts of North America, and some-

times even further than that,” said Ecomaine’s Recycling Manager, Kathryn Oak. “We have heard the urgency from plants that are working 24/7, and need more material to keep up.” “With an expansion coming in post-consumer paper and cardboard production in the next few years,” added Roche, “This scarcity could turn into a long-term shortage. We are standing by to try and do all we can to meet this demand, during the current public health challenges, and into the future.” Furthermore, though Ecomaine’s waste-to-energy (WTE) operations present a safe method for the destruction of viruses that may exist in trash, keeping that capacity for truly non-contaminated material is critically important. With Ecomaine’s WTE plant nearing capacity, if recyclables are re-directed toward combustion, non-recyclable solid waste that may contain virulent waste could be forced out, toward landfills. “We have been focused for a long time on making sure the right material is in the right bin,” said Roche. “At this point, under these circumstances, it’s even more important now than ever to keep recyclables in the recycling and solid waste in the trash.” More information is available at www.ecomaine.org.
