of exhibitors from across New England and beyond, who attend the event each year bringing a wide assortment of antique farm machinery for visitors to see and enjoy. “This year we are featuring Olds Engines and Ford Tractors, and all makes and models are always welcome,” says President Tom Raitt. “Everything from rusty antique tractors, working tractors right out of the hayfield, to shiny restored tractors come to the show.” “People love watching all the unique displays including the Shingle Mill, Hildreth Woodsplitter, Large Engines and Power. It’s quite a sight to see. Vis-

itors can pick out the perfect souvenir shingle to take home. And the Blacksmith Shop is where you can watch them work the forge and create unique items.” “Hit-n-Miss engines make

the most unique sound and were used to run many different kinds of equipment back in the day,” states Vice President Phil St. Jean. I’ve been a collector of these engines for most of my life.

I enjoy seeing all the different displays each year that our members and exhibitors bring. Popular events are the Tractor Parade and Tractor Pulling that start at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and on Sunday morning. There’s plenty to see besides farm machinery. For the kids there is the pedal pull Saturday morning, barrel tractor rides, “kids korner” where they can color and play games, “milk” Betsy the wooden cow and more. Crafters, a flea market, demonstrations at various exhibits like the Colonial Encampment, blacksmith shop and shingle mill. See TRACTORS page 26...

SOUTH BERWICK Marshwood High School Principal, Paul Mehlhorn, announced that seniors Liam Coomey, Nathan Kiesman and Noble Mushtak have been selected to receive a 2019 National Merit Scholarship. From the nationwide pool of 16,000 finalists, these students were among the 7,500 students chosen as scholarship winners. About 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/

NMSQT) which serves as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of 15,000 finalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. “The young men and women recognized as finalists have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success, commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of academic excellence in our nation.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ “Mamma Mia!” at Hackmatack Playhouse BERWICK As if “Mamma Mia!” isn’t schmaltzy enough to begin with, the Hackmatack Playhouse production of this Broadway mega-hit serves up its own dose of sentimentality, with two talented mother-child teams fueling the tender and nostalgic production. First there is Kelli LeighAnn Connors of Lebanon, directing her son and daughter in the show three decades after she first auditioned to act in a play at Hackmatack. Shaughnessey, 21, plays the lead role of Sophie, and Griffinn, 17, plays “Pepper” in “Mamma Mia!,” which opens Wednesday, July 24 at 538 School

Street (Route 9) in Berwick. Then there is the additional mother-daughter team of Heather Glenn Wixson, who plays the lead role of the mother, Donna, and her daughter, Jemma, who is cast in the ABBA band. For Heather, being in this show with her daughter has huge significance. “‘Mamma Mia!’ for me was the thing that brought music back to my life,” Glenn Wixson said, recalling her time of grief after her mother died. Her family went to see the sing-a-long film version of “Mamma Mia!” one Saturday during that period and singing along with this show helped lift

her out of the darkness. And so she returned again to see it the very next day and several more times over the next year. “From this point, it was my dream to play Donna,” Glenn Wixson said, “and I spent two months preparing for the audition.” It is not the first time she and Jemma have been in a show together, but it is perhaps the most meaningful time. “We love this show, it’s special to us,” agreed Jemma. The biggest production of Hackmatack’s season, “Mamma Mia!” features the music of ABBA and tells the story of a young woman’s search for her birth father.

Set on a Greek island, a bride-tobe wants to find her father so he can walk her down the aisle and she brings three contenders onto the island. The audience is encouraged to join in singing along to songs like “Take a Chance on Me,” Knowing Me, Knowing

You,” “Dancing Queen” and, of course, “Mamma Mia!” “Mamma Mia!” runs July 24 to August 10 with shows 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Thursdays. For details, go to www.hackmatack.org or call 207698-1807.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Seacoast Rep’s “Hair” Kicks Off at Kittery STAR Center KITTERY Seacoast Rep is pleased to present Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical on its second stage at the STAR Theatre at Kittery Community Center from July 18 through August 4. Hair was the first rock musical to hit Broadway. The year was 1967, the Vietnam War loomed large in America, and a counterculture was multiplying into what would blossom into The Summer of Love. Hair is a product of its time and place, written by hippies about their own lived experiences. The true-to-life musical would take it from New York City to the whole world, to a motion picture, and even to the Supreme Court. “It’s no exaggeration to call Hair the most subversive musical of all time,” says Brandon James, co-artistic director of Seacoast Rep and co-director of the piece. “It’s really the prototype for what we think of as the more edgy musicals that came after it - Tommy, Spring Awakening, even Hamilton.” It’s 1967 and HAIR’s hippie ‘tribe’ of youngsters in the East Village of New York are yearning to change the world, questioning authority and the American flag in the shadow of the draft and the Vietnam War. Wild, colourful, sexually liberated and free, they are united in protest and song. Hair represents a step forward for Seacoast Rep, which is also presenting two other professional musicals at the same time at its Mainstage Space at 125 Bow Street. “Hair is really our chance to put the STAR through it’s paces and see what it can do,” says Ben Hart, co-artistic director and performer in the show. “We’re really going to stretch that space to its limit.” The cast of 12 contains the Seacast Rep’s resident company Jason Faria, Alyssa Dumas, and Andrea Lyons - plus some new

faces for the Seacoast. Among them, Eric Elson - a recent graduate. “I love pretty much every moment of the show,” says Elson. “It’s all up to interpretation. When it started It was more like a time specific performance piece. It was truthfully a group of hippies that got up onstage and bared their souls. Now that it’s older it’s something else. It really opens it up.” Faria and Dumas are both choreographing and performing in the show. “It’s less about moves than about using bodies to tell the stories,” says Faria. “It makes it feel natural, which is what this show is about. Our steps look different on everyone.” “This music, for me, the way I’ve gone about it, is about the feeling and then moving through that feeling,” said Dumas. “It’s not strict. It’s not about that.” The show contains nudity and is not recommended for those that might be offput by that or the show’s other content. “We’re not pulling any punches,” says James. “This was a protest show. This is still a protest show. Why would we ever tone it down?” HAIR takes place at the

Bills To Combat Poverty in Maine Signed AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills signed into law two pieces of legislation to help combat poverty in Maine. The package of bills – LD 1774, “An Act To Reduce Child Poverty by Leveraging Investments so Families Can Thrive (LIFT), sponsored by Speaker Sara Gideon (D-Freeport), and LD 1772, “An Act To Secure Transitions to Economic Prosperity for Maine Families and Children (STEP), sponsored by House Minority Leader Trey Stewart (R-Presque Isle) – seek to help families in poverty meet their basic needs and ensure economic opportunities are accessible once those families are stabilized and able to take advantage of them. The bills passed the Legislature unanimously. “Maine is confronting a workforce shortage that will be solved, in part, by making sure that every able adult is working, and every child is getting a good education that will allow them to flourish. But right now, poverty is holding too many families back from realizing this potential,

said Governor Mills. “By signing these bills into law, we are lifting children and families out of poverty and helping them to step back into the workforce, obtain skills training, and get the education necessary for future success. I am grateful to Speaker Gideon, Representative Stewart, and the many others who worked so hard and in a bipartisan fashion on this critical issue. “It was critical that I continued my work this session on the ultimate goal of making sure that families can gain financial independence and build their own path to prosperity. This legislation will result in real, positive change in the lives of Mainers experiencing poverty—those who are struggling and only want better, brighter futures for themselves and their kids, said Speaker Gideon. “By prioritizing education and training services and making the investments called for in these bills, we’re going to see the dividends pay off in a big way for our State’s economy today and in the years to come. I want to thank both Rep. Stewart and Governor Mills for their part-

nership, along the tireless work of the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition. I am so proud that these bills are now law. LIFT, sponsored by Speaker Gideon, aims to tackle the so-called MaineCare “benefits cliff and gives more families access to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits by eliminating the gross income test. Representative Stewart’s STEP bill reduces the benefits cliff for TANF recipients, addresses the SNAP benefits cliff, provides funding for whole-family economic security initiatives to apply for grants from the Department of Health and Human Services, and enables TANF recipients to count time spent pursuing their GED toward their work requirements. Together, the bills make up the Invest in Tomorrow bill package, brought forward by a diverse group of stakeholders, which seeks to help families in poverty meet their basic needs and ensure economic opportunities are accessible once those families are stabilized and able to take advantage of them. The laws will take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the Legislature.

Inaugural ‘Journal of Maine Medical Center’ Published PORTLAND The inaugural issue of the “Journal of Maine Medical Center” (JMMC) has been published, with research articles covering everything from the potential hazards of foraging wild foods to innovative ways to help patients decide whether to pursue colorectal cancer screening. The JMMC is the state’s only peer-reviewed medical journal dedicated to original

research in the health sciences, and is accessible to the public at www.mmc.org/jmmc. The journal will publish biannually, and is now accepting submissions for its second edition. The inaugural issue contains 14 articles in the areas of original research, patient safety and quality improvement exemplars, innovation highlights and case reports, as well as five supplements pulled from research posters developed by clinicians and students. In one article, “A Case Report of Water Hemlock Poisoning,” clinicians detail a medical mystery that unfolded at Maine Medical Center involving a Maine fly fisherman who foraged what he thought was a harmless plant to use for tea, but instead wound up ingesting one of the state’s deadliest natural poisons. “In the era of easily ac-

cessible plant photos and increased interest in non-traditional medicines, the risk of plant misidentification is on the rise. Unintentional toxic ingestion must be considered in similar patients with a very abrupt onset of symptoms,” the authors conclude. “It is also important to educate the public about the risks involved with inexperienced foraging.” The authors of “Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening Decision Making Processes in Primary Care Practices” explore ways to aid patients in the decision-making process regarding whether to pursue a screening, potentially using the increasingly common electronic “patient portals” to assist. Bob Bing-You, M.D., MMC Vice President of Medical Education and Editor-inChief of the JMMC, noted that this new platform for research will also heighten the focus on inter-professional education and patient care in the region. In addition, rural healthcare and the unique opportunities and challenges it presents will be highlighted in the Journal. Sharing knowledge through articles will magnify innovation within the regional health care system, and strengthen regional workforce efforts through augmented professional connections.

Health & Fitness Co-Parenting Tips Every Divorcing Couple Needs to Know It’s well known that nearly half of all marriages in the country end in divorce. The rate is even higher for subsequent marriages. What many people are not as focused on are the children involved and how to best go about co-parenting in a way that will help them grow into well adjusted adults. July is National Child-Centered Divorce Month, making it an ideal time to place the focus of divorce on the children, and what can be done to help ensure they come out of the situation in healthy manner. “Divorce may seem like it’s something between the adults, but it is really something impacts the whole family, explains Reena B. Patel, a parenting expert, licensed educational psychologist, and author, who offer virtual workshops. “Children need parents who will commit to working together for the

health and development of their child. In a study published in the journal called The Linacre Quarterly, researchers shared their findings of reviewing three decades worth of research regarding the impact of divorce on the health of children. Their research found that divorce has been shown to diminish a child’s future competence in all areas of life, including family relationships, education, emotional well-being, and future earning power. Parents can help to counter the negative impact that divorce has on the children by focusing on effective coparenting that will help ensure their success throughout life. Children who see their parents continuing to work together are more likely to learn how to effectively and peacefully solve problems themselves. They will also have a healthy example to follow. It’s important for parents to remember

that their feelings about their ex does not, and should not, dictate their behavior. It’s better to focus on being a positive example, putting your child’s well being in the spotlight. Patel offers some tips that will help with ensuring co-parenting success: Commit to making coparenting an open dialogue with your ex. Arrange to do this through email, texting, voicemail, letters, or face-to-face conversations. In the beginning, it may be hard to have a civil dialogue with your ex. There are even websites where you can upload schedules, share information and communicate so you and your ex don’t have to directly touch base. The key is consistency. Rules don’t have to be exactly the same between the two households, but you and your ex should establish generally consistent guidelines. They should be mutually agreed upon for both households. For example, meal time, bed time, and completing homework need to consistent. This helps create a sense

of belonging and creates a sense of security and predictability for children. Discuss and come to an agreement about each of these issues. Don’t give in to guilt and try and outdo your ex by gifting you child with things, instead agree on discipline. This

includes things like behavioral guidelines, rewards, and consequences, so there is consistency in their lives, regardless of which parent they’re with at any given time. Research shows that children in homes with a unified parenting approach have greater well-being. Keep in mind that chilSee DIVORCE page 18...

New Law Seeks to Prevent Tobacco Use in Maine AUGUSTA A new law will ensure all tobacco products are taxed at the same rate and will provide ongoing funding for tobacco use prevention and cessation measures in Maine. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Joyce

“Jay McCreight, D-Harpswell and signed by Gov. Janet Mills last week. “To reduce the toll taken on the health of Mainers, on health care costs, on loss of worker productivity, and on our state budget, we need to both

prevent youth from becoming tobacco users and support current tobacco users of any age to quit, said McCreight. “This comprehensive approach will provide the incentives and resources needed to protect Mainers from the health risks associ-

ated with tobacco use. This new law equalizes the tax on tobacco products in line with cigarettes at 43% of the wholesale sales price, including items like pipe tobacco, small and large cigars and e-cigarette products. If the tax on cigarettes increases, the tax on all other tobacco and e-cigarette products will be adjusted by a rate that is equivalent to the percentage change in the tax rate for one cigarette. The law sets aside just under $7.4 million from the General Fund between now and the end of FY 2021 for to-

bacco use prevention and cessation programs at the Department of Health and Human Services, Maine Center for Disease Control Prevention. That money will receive a substantial federal match and will be offset by the tax revenue coming in from the tobacco tax increase. In addition, $9.2 million will be allocated to support rural hospital and ambulance services. Finally, the law includes language to ensure ongoing funding in future biennial budgets. The changes will go into effect on January 2, 2020.

dren will frequently test boundaries and rules, especially if there’s a chance to get something they may not ordinarily be able to obtain. This is why a united front in co-parenting is recommended. Be flexible and update often. If there are changes at home, in your life, it is important that your child is never the primary source of information. Speak in positive language about your ex. Remember, often times, the marriage is what was the issue, not the parenting style. Each of you has valuable strengths as a parent. Remember to recognize the different traits you and your ex have - and reinforce this awareness with your children. Children exposed to conflict between co-parents are more likely to develop issues such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD. Keeping this in mind,

strive to keep conflict around them to a minimal or none at all. Keep the conversations child-focused. This will leave out problems that you and your ex have with each other. The focus now needs to be on the children. “Effective and healthy co-parenting may be difficult at first and it make time some time to work everything out, added Patel. “But getting this part right in the long run is going to have a huge positive impact on your children, so it’s worth it. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out for professional help to put a plan together or determine how to best put coparenting into action. To learn more about Reena B. 5-Star Review! from Yelp

SIXTH YEAR IN A ROW AND NEVER DISAPPOINTED. Every September we spend a week in ME. This year unfortunately it is serving as our evacuation for our home in SC. Gratefully our dinner and experience at Bintliff’s helped take our minds off of Florence for a little while. This restaurant remains our non-seafood choice in the Kennebunk area. This is the opinion of a retired couple that eats out 3 to 5 times per week, every week, even when not traveling! Reservations Recommended for Dinner Only

going Conversation with History Series, is presenting the film, “Dawnland - A Documentary About Cultural Survival and Stolen Children - The Story of the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)” on Saturday, July 20, at 7 p.m. (doors open 6:30 p.m.). The film will be shown in the Meetinghouse Museum at the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit located at 938 Post Road in Wells. This broadcast-length version of the documentary Dawnland follows the commission to contemporary Wabanaki communities to witness intimate, sacred moments of truth-telling and healing. With exclusive access to this groundbreaking process and never-before-seen footage, the film reveals the untold narrative of indigenous

child removal in the United States. Tom Reynolds, an organizer and communications staffer at Maine-Wabanaki REACH, will facilitate a follow up discussion with Q&A. Filmmakers Adam Mazo and Ben Pender-Cudlop talk about how “in Maine, a historic investigation — the first government-sanctioned truth and reconciliation commission in the United States — began a bold journey. For over two years, native and non-native commissioners travelled across Maine. They gathered testimony and bore witness to the devastating impact of the state’s child welfare practices on families in Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot tribal communities. Collectively, these tribes make up the Wabanaki people.” Their film team, Upstander

Project, describes why this film is important: “For most of the 20th century, government agents systematically forced Native American children from their homes and placed them with white families. Many children experienced devastating emotional harm in homes that shamed, demeaned, and erased their culture.” Maine-Wabanaki REACH is a cross-cultural collaboration that supported the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The organization’s educational presentations provide an opportunity for non-native people to learn about the shared history of Maine and Wabanaki people. This event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP at www.mainewabanakireach.org. For details, email info@wohistory.org or call 207-646-4775.

my doctors portals. Could they be sharing my info? Rick Dear Rick, With all the HIPPA regulations, I really don’t think that your doctor’s portal is the reason you are getting all this junk mail. Spammers have software “robots that scan the internet looking for email addresses. Since all these addresses have a set format something@someplace.com it is easy to create a program that will look for that specific format. If your email address is anywhere on a public web page or forum, it is fairly easy for them to find. Somehow, your email address has gotten on a list that spammers sell to each other. Your only recourses are to either filter out the messages, or change your email address. Unsubscribing really won’t work unless the emails are coming from a legitimate company. All you are doing is making your email address more valuable because they know there is a live person connected to the account. Since changing your email address is a little drastic (although I know

quite a few people who have been driven to it by all the spam) lets start with filtering out the messages. I noticed that you are sending me this message using a Gmail account, so lets see what you can do there. When reading a Gmail message, you will notice a small stop sign with an exclamation mark in the center. If the message you are reading is junk that you did not ask for, just click that button (If you hover your mouse over it, it will say, “Report Spam). Reporting Spam messages this way not only blocks them from coming into your inbox in Gmail, but it also contributes to Gmail’s database and helps all other Gmail users. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I lost the CD for my Epson X600 wireless printer. I want to install it on another computer. How can I get a copy of the CD? I enjoy your column very much. Ann Dear Ann, You really don’t need the entire CD to install your printer, all you need to do is download the Drivers and Utilities package from Epson’s website. First, you need to make sure you are on the official Epson website at www.epson.com. Then, click the link at the top of the page that says, “Drivers and Support. Now, just type your printer model number in the search box, and download the drivers for that printer. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? ~ Obituaries ~ ...CHASE from page 24 wick, Jack became involved in missionary work with Mercy Ships International. Jack worked on these hospital ships throughout a good portion of the world, including being responsible at one point for completely fitting out a ship in Newcastle, England. When not at sea, Jack ran the mission’s motor pool. When not maintaining equipment, he would drive to remote villages to bring children back to the ships for surgery. His efforts took him to Ghana, South Africa, the Dominican Republic, and other countries, often accompanied by his wife and once by his daughter Heather. With these skills, Jack was well known as a man who could do or fix anything. He built his own house from trees he had cut down that were milled into lumber. He loved collecting old car parts with his father and used them to restore vehicles into working order. Jack enjoyed driving his Model T in parades and at Acton Fair. He and his father also built classic wood strip canoes in Jack’s basement. When his COPD and leukemia limited Jack’s mobility, he became an avid collector with the help of the internet. Jack is survived by his wife, Arlene Kay (Randolph) Chase; his son, Russell, and his wife, Alyson, of Wells; his daughter, Heather Runnels, and her hus-

band, Randy, of Auburn; his grandchildren, Ryan and Evan Chase of Wells and Adam Runnels of Auburn; and his sister-inlaw, Donna Bell. He was predeceased by his parents and a younger brother, Paul. He is survived by his brother, Thomas, and his wife, Carol, of Acton; his sister, Kathleen Winslow, and her husband, Glenn, of Mt. Vernon, OH; his brother Glen, and his wife, Melinda, of Greenbrier, AK; his brother, Stephen, and his wife, Diane, of Wells; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held on Monday, July 8, at Bibber Memorial Chapel on Chapel Road in Wells. A Memorial Service was held at Bibber Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, July 9, with a reception after at the Wells Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Stjude.org. late Lester G. and Martha (Milliken) Foss. On September 5, 1958 he married his high school sweetheart, Diana, at Sheppards Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX. After dedicating 21 years of service, including serving in the Vietnam War, he retired in 1979 from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sargent. His favorite past times included woodworking and hunting. He loved to carve wooden birds, build all types of furniture, and enjoyed collecting and restoring antique tools such as wooden planes. On any given summer day, he could be found yard sailing and flea marketing with his wife Diana, as they searched for antique tools and treasures. Lobstering and fishing with his family, and making memories with his grandchildren were also very important to him. They would often spend vacations road tripping and camping throughout the United States and Canada. He and Diana wintered in Tampa, FL, for several years, where they made many life long friends. He was predeceased by his parents Lester G. and Martha Foss; his son Lester G. Foss

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked quesWLRQV LV ³:K\ VHQG ÀRZHUV WR D PHPRULDO service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money? Well nothing could be further from the truth. missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

WELLS Look at the photo carefully: you see kitty, kitty, doggie, kitty. WHAT? Wait a minute! What’s

a dog doing in a Safe Haven cat room? The dog is Sophie, who’s actually a Cat Socializer. She

tests the kitties in our Adoption Center for dog acceptance. For such a small dog, she certainly has a big job! Many people who want to adopt from Safe Haven have dogs, and thanks to Sophie, we know which kitties approve of them or not. Thank you, Sophie the chihuahua, and her mom, Dori, for

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Kitten season is definitely in full swing here at ACAR. We just received a call and took in 23 abandoned kittens left at an unoccupied camp here in Southern Maine. Fortunately they were noticed by a neighbor driving by the camp who immediately contacted us for help. Bowie (pictured here) is one of the kittens and is doing well, but most of the others have runny eyes, upper respiratory issues and have needed a lot of vetting as we get them up to snuff. We cannot stress the importance of spaying and neutering pets for situations just like this! It is gut-wrenching to know abandonments like this still take place but here we are, full to capacity now and trying to help these sweet innocent babies who came to us through no fault of their own. We need your help! Whether it is to volunteer and help us at the rescue with the daily cleaning, feeding and general handson care of these 23 plus all our other cats and kittens or whether it is financial support to help with the vetting, feeding and other things these kittens may need. To volunteer, call Marilyn at 207-490-2855.

the great photo of Sophie hard at work. The photo also clearly shows you the level of commitment and care Safe Haven gives to our rescued kitties. They live wonderful lives in free-roaming cat rooms, with cat trees and perches and hiding places, cozy cat beds, and sunny window ledges to lounge on. All the comforts of a loving home! Not every kitty is lucky enough to have Safe Haven be their temporary home until they’re adopted. We want to save even more! But the only way is by

expanding. So we just purchased a large, lovely property in Wells on Rt. 1 called Cattail Farm. The farmhouse will be a wonderful environment for kitties with special needs. Mother cats and their litters, and kitties needing special care will have their own cozy rooms. Our hospice kitties will enjoy freely roaming the house, including a screened-in porch. They need and deserve a home before they leave this earth, and the farmhouse and our volunteers will give them that. See HAVEN page 37...

Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK At AWS, our mission is to provide humane care and kindness to animals in need – whether it is an AWS resident awaiting a new home, or belonging to a member of our greater community. We do this through our very own Community Veterinary Clinic. Opened in 2018, the clinic is a full-service practice, offering a wide array of services and procedures to provide high-quality care to feline and canine patients. With digital x-ray, dental suite, ultrasound, diagnostic lab, two surgery suites, and an in-clinic

and online pharmacy, our Clinic serves nearly every need of our furry patients. You see, we believe that an individual’s wealth does not represent their capacity to love and care for a companion animal. No one should have to lose their beloved pet because veterinary care is too expensive to save their life. But we can’t do it without community support of the Companions for Life Fund, a fund solely dedicated to providing veterinary care to pets in need. Proceeds from our upcoming Woofstock Festival, Saturday, July 20, will directly support this work. Meet Stinkle was healed due to the support of the Companions for Life Fund. A beloved family pet, he had lumps on his abdomen and his family brought him to the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic for treatment as they had been to other veterinarians and were at the point

where they couldn’t continue to afford testing and diagnostics. AWS took the case and it turned out he had two hernias. The surgery was done as well as teeth cleaning, a microchip, and a rabies shot. Although unhappy with his temporary cone, he’ll be happy to return home with his family.

NFPA Underscores Electric Safety in Pools and at Marinas With the arrival of summer the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is reminding people about potential electrical hazards that exist in swimming pools, hot tubs and spas, onboard boats and in waters surrounding boats, marinas, and launch ramps. Most people have never heard of nor are they aware of electrical dangers posed in water environments such as electric shock drowning (ESD), and each year people are injured or killed from these hazards. Electric shock drowning happens when marina or onboard electrical systems leak electric current into the water.

July 19, 2019

The current then passes through the body and causes paralysis. When this happens, a person can no longer swim and ultimately drowns. Here are tips for swimmers, pool and boat owners: Tips for swimmers: Never swim near a marina, dock or boatyard, or near a boat while it’s running. While in a pool, hot tub or spa, look out for underwater lights that are not working properly, flicker or work intermittently. If you feel a tingling sensation while in a pool, immediately stop swimming in your

WELLS The hunt program at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge is transitioning to an online permit system for the 2019-2020 season. Big game, migratory bird, upland game bird, and falconry permits will be available only by using www.recaccess.com. RecAccess is a leading provider of online fee collection solutions to federal, state, and local gov-

ernment agencies. Hunters may create a RecAccess account now. Hunt permits are not yet available for purchase. The 20192020 Refuge hunt permits will be available for online purchase through RecAccess on Monday, August 19. All hunters must possess a current Maine hunter’s license in order to purchase a Refuge hunt permit. A hunt packet with refuge hunt regula-

spa or hot tub electrically safe. Have the electrician show you how to turn off all power in case of an emergency. Make sure any overhead lines maintain the proper distance over a pool and other structures, such as a diving board. If you have any doubts, contact a qualified electrician or your local utility company to make sure power lines are a safe distance away.

Tips for pool owners: If you are putting in a new pool, hot tub or spa, be sure the wiring is performed by an electrician experienced in the special safety requirements for these types of installations. Have a qualified electrician periodically inspect and — where necessary — replace or upgrade the electrical devices or equipment that keep your pool,

tions, maps, a permit, and parking pass will only be available for download after the hunter has purchased a permit through RecAccess. Hunters wishing to hunt migratory birds will also be required to have a Federal Duck Stamp in addition to their Maine license. Duck Stamps are available for purchase beginning July 1, at the Refuge administrative office at 321 Port Road, in Wells, Maine. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office is closed on federal holidays. The Duck Stamp fee is $25, cash or check. Checks should be made payable to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The US Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes hunting to be an effective tool for wildlife management, and hunting has been identified as an appropriate wildlife-dependent public use at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. For more information, contact Cindy Phillips at 207646-9226 x 24. Updates will be posted to the refuge website at www.fws.gov.

~ News ~ MaineDOT Reminding I-95 Drivers of Construction

...ELECTRIC from page 36 electricity into the water causing water electrification. Each year, and after a major storm that affects the boat, have the boat’s electrical system inspected by a qualified marine electrician to be sure it meets the required codes of your area, including the American Boat & Yacht Council. Make the necessary repairs if recommended. Check with the marina owner who can also tell you if the marina’s electrical system has recently been inspected to meet the required codes of your area. Have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) installed on the boat; use only portable GFCIs or shore power cords (including “Y” adapters) that are Marine Listed when using electricity near water. Test GFCIs monthly. NFPA has additional resources at www.nfpa.org, including tip sheets and checklists which can be downloaded.

YORK Drivers who travel on I-95 are certainly aware by now that work has begun on the new toll plaza in York but should also be aware that soon construction will begin on the Piscataqua River Bridge that joins Portsmouth and Kittery. The I-95 bridge project will involve resurfacing of all six travel lanes, the replacement of traffic barriers and upgrades to other structural and electrical elements. Additionally, the bridge is being primed for a possible intelligent transportation system that will allow the breakdown lanes to be used for travel when there are high traffic volumes. Because this is the most heavily traveled bridge in Maine, most work is being done during overnight hours. This schedule means that some people living close to the bridge may hear construction sounds overnight. The

“mill and fill” paving process begins in mid-July and involves grinding existing pavement and laying the asphalt mix being brought in by trucks. After approximately a week, crews will transition to demolition work which will also create significant noise. Though such noise is un-

welcome, it is unavoidable and will continue intermittently until October 2021 when the project will be substantially complete. To keep up-to-date on the bridge project, visit “Maine Ahead News” on Facebook and Twitter, or go to www.buildingabettergateway.com.

...HAVEN from page 28 The Carriage House will provide additional space for our adoption center. That will increase adoptions and take the burden off our current shelter, which frequently runs out of space for all the homeless kitties needing rescue. The huge antique apple barn will more than double the space for our thrift shop, which should increase our revenue to fund our no-kill mission and give sustainability to our orga-

nization. We are asking for your support to help Safe Haven take this giant step. We have started a GoFundMe campaign (www. gofundme.com/safehavenhumanesociety-newdigs.) Hootie, one of our shop kitties, is heading up this campaign so go check out her page! We appreciate your support in any size donation. If you’d rather write a check, please mail it to Safe Haven Capital Cam-

paign, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090. We’re also looking for a volunteer who has extensive fundraising experience and deep connections in the community to join our fundraising committee. Email martine@safehavenhumanesociety.org. We also need cat room cleaners, caregivers and feeders, especially evenings. Call Stephanie at 207-281-2594 or Leonore at our shelter 207-646-1611. Thanks!
