Young Girl & Grandfather Save Man, Dog from Piscataqua River By Michelle Kingston Staff Columnist
Terry Adams and his granddaughter Hillary Adams-Wainwright, local heroes. (photo by Michelle Kingston)
YORK – As if running your own lobster boat at thirteen years old isn’t impressive enough, Hillary Adams-Wainwright, of York, is now considered a local Seacoast hero after saving two lives on Monday, July 11, from the Piscataqua River. “Everyone kind of made it seem like it was (a big deal), but I don’t really think it was at all. It was just kind of like, it happened,” she said. She had just finished drop-
ping off a load of lobsters at Chrissy D. Lobster Company in Kittery with her grandfather, Terry Adams, 66, when she spotted Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers whistling and motioning them to turn around. As the pair began to rotate the boat, scanning the river for what they thought would be divers, Adams-Wainwright spotted a small, scared and struggling four-legged friend searching for help. “We went and grabbed the dog, and we were heading back, and they were still telling us to
go back,” she said. A woman on Peirce Island was also frantically screaming for Adams-Wainwright and her grandfather to continue looking around. “She was hysterical,” said Adams. Penny, the small pup, who Adams-Wainwright believed was an English Terrier, was recovering on the boat when Adams spotted a hand pop up out of the river. Penny’s owner was also gasping for air, requirSee RESCUE page 9...
First Responders Honored for Work Battling USS Miami Fire KITTERY – New Hampshire’s U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D) and Kelly Ayotte (R) were in Portsmouth Monday, July 16, to honor the emergency first responders responsible for containing the fire aboard the USS Miami this past May. Resolution recognizing the responders, which they introduced along with U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Scott Brown (R-MA), Susan Collins (R-ME), John Kerry (D-MA) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT). The June 7 resolution commends the service of all those who responded to the fire, minimized damage to the submarine and ensured there was no loss of life. Shaheen and Ayotte presented the Senate resolution they and other New England senators sponsored to commend the first responders at a ceremony at Prescott Park in Portsmouth.
Last week, the Navy convened a special panel to investigate the May 23 fire that damaged the USS Miami while it was in dry dock for an overhaul at the shipyard in Kittery, Maine. The investigation was ordered by U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia. Early estimates put the fire damage at $400 million. It damaged the torpedo room, crew quarters, and command and control areas. “Your swift response and commitment to containing the fire helped minimize damage to the submarine and more imporSee HONORED page 6...

KENNEBUNK – Thirteen Chinese students and their chaperone were in town this past week for a summer camp at Kennebunk High School. They are from Kennebunk High’s sister school in Tangshan, China. They arrived a little later than scheduled when a connecting flight to Maine was cancelled at the last minute. ers finally arrived in Maine and were greeted by their host families from Kennebunk. Principal Susan Cressey went to China last March and visited the Tangshan Foreign Language School, located north of Beijing. It was then that she set up the exchange. “Students are fluent in English,” Cressey said. “I got to attend classes there. I was very interested in the discussions.” Classes are held in English in many schools in the area, See STUDENTS page 4...

grams in the local area that help children and families affected by mental illnesses. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that one in four adults will experience a mental health disorder in a given year. Many types of mental illnesses are hereditary, and research shows that children raised by parents with depression or other mental illnesses are more likely to suffer the same symptoms as they grow into adulthood. The race is considered dangerous because of unpredictable surf conditions and the colder Maine water temperatures, and Reed said the water was very cold last Saturday. The Nubble Light Challenge is a non-profit organization established in 2010, to raise funds to benefit community-based organizations by promoting an annual athletic event. The goal is to promote a safe and quality event that will be competitive for those trying to establish personal goals as well as those satisfied with the goal of finishing. “Everyone finished safely,” Reed said. “...No emergencies.”

...STUDENTS from page 1 Cressey said, and most classes have forty-five to fifty students in them. “The classes stay put, and the teachers move from class to class,” she said, adding that – despite the large class size – behavior was not a problem. “Only the motivated and brightest get to go to high school in China,” she said. While they are here, the Chinese students will take part in science and math classes, tour the University of New England, and meet with a guidance counselor about the American college application process. Each morning, the students will have about four hours of classes before they head out into the community to take in local arts and culture. On Tuesday morning, July 16, Kennebunk High School science teacher Glenn Black got the students started on a lesson, with some help from KHS students Jace Valls (senior), Colby Harrison (senior), Kimberly Keithley (senior), and Caroline Smith (sophomore). Keithley is originally from China. Also lending a hand is Sandy Cheng, a native of Beijing, who has been staying with a Kennebunk family for four months now, and plans to stay a couple more. When she heard about the visiting students, it just seemed natural to offer to help out. She created a lesson for the Chinese students’ first morning session, but the flight delay has caused that lesson to be shelved for now. “We will definitely find a way to fit it in this week,” Cressey said. Black teaches a course called International Baccalaureate biology, which emphasizes looking at subject matter from a global perspective, so his involvement was also a natural fit. Emma Liu, the director of Tangshan’s international department, is chaperoning the kids this week. She watched attentively as her students took in Black’s lecture, looking interested and engaged, albeit a bit sleepy. The group plans to go kayaking as part of an L.L. Bean outdoor classroom, visit Portland harbor, and have a farewell reception on July 20 at the Nonantum. They return to China early the next morning.

tantly, ensured that no one lost a life that day,” Senator Shaheen said. “The men and women who work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard have an incredible track record of working together and getting the job done. To everyone who worked together to respond to May’s fire: thank you for your professionalism, your quick response, and your continued commitment to serving and protecting our country. The courage and cooperation we saw in May stands as inspiration for all of us.” Maine U.S. Senator Susan Collins said “When the alarm rings, as it did on May 23rd at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, we see just how brave our first responders are. They never hesitate to put themselves in harm’s way. They risk their lives to save others.” Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee added in a prepared statement “I am hopeful the USS Miami can be repaired in Kittery because the shipyard workers are the best at what they do. The sooner this submarine returns to the fleet, the sooner it will be available to complete missions essential to our national security throughout the world.”

exotic cars as the pieces and America as the game board. But there is nothing trivial about its purpose or results. It is often referred to as “the most fun you will ever have, doing the most important thing you’ve ever done.” Each team is assigned a missing child from their home region along with thousands of posters to distribute along the route. A decal featuring the child is affixed to the vehicle, creating a rolling awareness campaign. To date, the effort has assisted in the recovery of thirty-eight missing children. The Race to Recover America’s Missing Children is the largest active recovery effort for missing and exploited children in the country. This year, the Fireball Run’s theme is “Northern Exposure,” and it travels from Independence, Ohio, to Bangor, Maine, from September 21-29. The crew will be in Sanford and Ogunquit on Friday, July 27, and at Wonder Mountain in Ogunquit, Falmouth, and Bangor on July 28.

~ News ~ ...RESCUE from page 1 ing assistance and hoping to be rescued. “We found him, and we had him catch his breath on the side of the boat when we got up to him and then we pulled him in,” said Adams-Wainwright. Penny and her owner, Chris Stephens, 27, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, were playing fetch on Peirce Island when a long toss took Penny out into the current. Stephens swam out to save Penny when he was caught up in the current as well. They were both brought to safety very quickly. Adams feared that if he didn’t move away from the shore fast his boat was going to ground out.
“I just wanted to get out of there before we ruined the boat,” he said. “We got him out of the boat. We got the dog out of the boat. Then we got out of there. I was afraid I was getting hung up, and I would be in trouble. We just got out of there as soon as we could,” said Adams. Steve Achilles, Portsmouth Deputy Fire Chief, said Stephens refused medical treatment from Portsmouth paramedics at the scene and chose not to be transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Both Stephens and his dog appeared to be okay at the scene. However, both AdamsWainwright and Adams do not think they would have been if it weren’t for them being there.
“There were other boats,” said Adams-Wainwright. “But no one noticed.” “They just kept right on going,” said Adams. Adams believed the dog and her owner had been distressed in the water for at least fifteen minutes before he and his granddaughter saved them. They had drifted off land about 100-150 yards, according to Adams. The owner and the dog are both safe, but have not contacted the Maine heroes who saved
their lives last week. “Haven’t heard from him,” said Adams, a bit surprised. Adams-Wainwright and Adams have been fishing together for more than five years now and have never had to rescue anyone from the river before. However, Adams did save a kayaker in the York River a few years ago. “He was just exhausted. He was going out with the tide,” said Adams. They both caution all swimmers, local and from away,

to be cautious of the tides in our area. Adams-Wainwright has spent her summer days since she was eight years old with her grandfather, pulling in traps, bonding, and making hardearned cash as she gains experience for her dream job as a marine biologist. “She’ll have up to 150 traps next year,” said Adams. After all these years, she says she has never caught anyone quite like she did last week. Just lobsters.

Planning for the Health Care Reform Surtax To help pay for the cost of universal health care, a new federal tax on most net investment income will affect the wealthiest taxpayers. Starting in 2013, higher-income taxpayers will be subject to an additional 3.80 percent tax on most net investment income. This new tax impacts taxpayers with wages or net earnings above $200,000 (single), $250,000 (married filing jointly), or $125,000 (married filing separately). The exceptions to the surtax are distributions from retirement accounts, including pensions, 401(k)s and IRAs, and income generated from municipal bonds. The following types of investment income will be affected: Taxable interest Capital gains

Dividends Nonqualified annuity distributions Royalties Rental Income Please note: The sale of a home could trigger the tax, but only on the proceeds in excess of the personal residence exclusion. For qualified individuals, the exclusion protects the seller from taxes up to $250,000 of gain; for married couples filing jointly, the exclusion applies to a gain of up to $500,000. Calculating the tax For individuals, the 3.80 percent health care surtax is applied to the lesser of net investment income or the excess of modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) over the applicable threshold: $200,000 (single), $250,000 (married filing jointly), and $125,000 (married filing separately). Example: Mark and Sue Taxpayer have earnings from wages of $175,000 and investment earnings of $100,000 for a total MAGI of $275,000. According to the rule, the 3.80 percent surtax is applied to the lesser of $100,000 (net investment income) or $25,000 (excess MAGI over threshold). In Mark and Sue’s case, only $25,000 of their investment income is subject to the health care surtax. The entire $100,000 of net investment income is subject to either capital gains or ordinary income tax, depending on the nature of the income. What can I do to plan for the health care reform surtax? Tax-exempt municipal bonds may become more attractive. Interest generated from a municipal bond is generally exempt from federal tax and from state tax for residents living in the issuing state. Note that private activity municipal bonds, while tax-exempt from regular federal taxes, are subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). The AMT creates a tax liability for an individual who otherwise pays little or no tax. When considering whether tax-exempt bonds have a place in your portfolio, guard against allowing tax avoidance to result in misaligned asset allocation. The goal of asset allocation is to reduce the investor’s risk See REFORM page 12...

through diversification.* A portfolio that is too heavy with tax-exempt bonds could be exposed to additional market risk. If you purchase bonds with the goal of holding to maturity, you may gain predictable income and a return of capital. But if liquidity prior to maturity is a concern to you, be aware that rising interest rates typically cause bond prices to fall. Inves-
tors reacting to financial headlines can engage in indiscriminate selling and cause plummeting bond prices. Roth IRAs may be preferable to Traditional IRAs. Although distributions from IRAs and employer-sponsored retirement plans are not subject to the 3.80-percent health care tax, distributions may increase ordinary income above

If you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms – numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain – you MUST DISCOVER our Neuropathy Recovery Program! Neuropathy affects every part of your life – walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy relationships and so much more. If you have tried “everything” (like Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin® or other medications) and you are not getting the lasting results you want, then this may be the most important information you have ever read! There is a simple reason that most treatments fail... because, at best, they only cover up your symptoms and do not heal your damaged nerves.
I have been researching, reading, attending classes and consulting with experts in the scientific community – all to create my Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment Program. The good news is that the principles behind my Neuropathy Recovery Program work with both diabetic and non-diabetic types of neuropathy. I can’t wait to see if I can help you!
We all know that there is a tremendous difference between covering up your symptoms and actually fixing the underlying problem. Pins and needles feeling Numbness in the hands or feet Tingling or burning sensations Weakness in the legs and toes Sharp shooting or burning pains A feeling like a sock is rolled up under your toes? You have probably been to specialists, tried alternative health care, and all of the latest and greatest miracle cures. Unfortunately, there is no gimmick, no quick fix, and no pill that will ever make your neuropathy go away permanently. What we do in our office is the REAL THING! I am confident that our Neuropathy Recovery Program is something you haven’t tried before and may be the answer you are looking for.
IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT GETTING RID OF YOUR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY THIS YEAR AND IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH ONCE AND FOR ALL, DO NOT MISS THIS FREE ONE-HOUR SEMINAR! If you are dealing with Peripheral Neuropathy, I sincerely want to help you get your life back. Are you frustrated after having tried everything and still dealing with neuropathy? the high-income thresholds. This would result in other investment or earned income becoming subject to the tax. Consider converting Traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs in 2012. Paying taxes on the conversion sooner may allow future distributions to escape the tax increases later. Harvest gains now if you expect to sell an investment in the next few years. Although it rarely makes sense to pay taxes prematurely, you have to run the numbers if you are in the highest tax brackets. For instance, if you defer selling an asset until 2013, when capital gains increase from 15 percent to 23.80 percent, you could need more than seven years to break even because of the shrinkage in assets due to the larger amount of taxes incurred. Consider boosting retirement contributions, especially to plans that favor older, longterm employees, such as ageweighted or new comparability plans. Not only do retirement accounts grow tax-deferred until withdrawn from the plan, they are also exempt from the new 3.80-percent surtax on investment income. One way to increase retirement contributions is to pair a defined benefit pension plan with a defined contribution plan. This may allow contributions several times higher than with a 401(k) or profitsharing retirement plan alone. Explore tax-advantaged ways to save, such as life insurance and annuities. While distributions from these insurance products are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, the benefit of tax deferral can offset higher tax rates. Life insurance has the additional advantage of providing a death benefit substantially higher than your account value. And life insurance distributions taken as withdrawals of basis and as loans are potentially tax-free if managed properly. Remember that loans and withdrawals generally reduce the death benefit for your family, decrease guarantees, and increase the risk of a policy lapse. Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against losses in declining markets. Nichole D. Kasmarek Successfully Completes CHC Examination SANFORD – The Compliance Certification Board (CCB) announced that Patricia Kasmarek, director of corporate compliance for Goodall Hospital, has successfully completed the Certified in Healthcare Compliance Examination, thus earning the “CHC” designation. A CHC is a professional with knowledge of relevant regulations and expertise in compliance processes sufficient to assist the healthcare industry to understand and address legal obligations, and promote organizational integrity through the operation of effective compliance programs. The purpose of certification is to promote healthcare compliance through the certification of qualified healthcare compliance professionals by recognizing formally those individuals who meet the eligibility requirements of the CCB and pass the CHC Examination. The exam encourages continued personal and professional growth in the practice of healthcare compliance and provides a national standard of requisite knowledge required for certification, thereby assisting employers, the public and members of the health professions in the assessment of a healthcare compliance professional. Healthcare compliance is a relatively new industry, born out of the government’s crackdown on Medicare fraud. Compliance professionals come from a variety of backgrounds including coding, medical records, nursing, medical practice, law and government. CCB president Debbie Troklus said, “The United States government constantly updates the laws and regulations surrounding Medicare to ensure proper billing and to eliminate fraud. These new regulations demand professionals who both understand the new regulations and how to implement programs to ensure compliance within their companies.” Founded by the Health Care Compliance Association in 1998, the Compliance Certification Board exists

BUSINESS & FINANCE “Millennials” in Good Position for the Future
If you were born anywhere from 1982 to 2001, or within a few years of this range, you are considered a “Millennial.” As a member of this group, you share many things — cultural references, familiarity with technology, attitudes toward work and family — with others your age. And if you’re one of the “older” Millennials, you and your peers have something else in common — specifically, you have a good opportunity to launch investment strategies to help you save for the future. Why are you so well positioned to invest for the future? For one thing, it’s
because you have so much of the future ahead of you. As an investor, time is your greatest ally, for a couple of reasons. First, the more years you have to invest, the greater the growth potential of your investments. And second, by investing for the long term, you can help reduce the impact of periods of short-term volatility on your portfolio. Furthermore, since you may be in the early stage of your career, you probably have yet to reach your maximum earnings and may be eligible to put in the full annual amount to a Roth IRA, one of the most effective retirement savings vehicles available. (Eligibility to contribute to a Roth IRA is phased out
over a specific income range.) When you invest in a Roth IRA, your earnings have the opportunity to grow tax free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59½ and you’ve had your account for at least five years. Even if you do contribute to a Roth IRA, you can still participate in your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k) if you work for a company, a 457(b) if you work for a state or local government, or a 403(b) if you work for a school or other tax-exempt organization. And you should indeed contribute to your employer’s plan, because it offers some
key benefits: Your earnings accumulate on a tax-deferred basis, and you typically fund your plan with pre-tax dollars.
So the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. (Taxes See FUTURE page 16...

Her contributions over her 33-year career earned many accolades from her colleagues: “impeccable clinical skills,” “high ethical standards,” “profound intuition,” “she established rapport with even the most difficult patients,” “talented, empathetic,” “she has touched many lives and soothed many souls.” A minister in the Church of the Spiritual Advisory Council, she often went to extraordinary lengths to comfort people in need, and she was known for her generosity and wisdom about human nature. She loved animals and over the years gave a wonderful home to many an abandoned cat and dog. She helped start an AIDS support facility, was a town ballot clerk, a volunteer chaplain, and a teacher. People remember: “(she) mentored young nurses how to work within a system effectively and be true to yourself,” “she showed him what real love is, and he glowed in it,” “a special woman with a huge heart.” Her friends and family will remember her with love as long as we live. Suwonneh was divorced. She is survived by her brother, Bob Petrucci and his wife Suzanne, of Boylston, MA, her nephew Noah Petrucci, his wife Diane Simon and grandnieces Sabina and Noemie,

The amount you can afford to put into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan depends on your earnings and other circumstances — but you should at least strive to contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. Otherwise, you’ll be walking away from “free” money. All the money you contribute to your plan is yours, but if you leave your job before a specified vesting period — which often ranges from three to seven years — you may not be able to keep all your employer’s contributions. Check your plan’s rules to see how this applies to you. Of course, since you, as a Millennial, are in the early stage of your working years, you may well be on the lookout for new job opportunities. But if you are close to being fully vested in your 401(k), you might consider waiting a few extra months — or even a year — to take a new job, so that you can leave with the money your employer has contributed. As a Millennial, you’ve got time on your side as you invest for the future. So make sure you take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way. ~ News ~ Community Volunteer Clean-up on Mt. Agamenticus
YORK – The Mount Agamenticus Conservation Program is hosting a Community Volunteer Workday on Saturday, July 21st at 9 a.m. Volunteers will work along side the Conservation Crew to re-route the top sections of Fisher and Vulture’s View trails. The Crew and volunteers from previous workdays have already completed minor reroutes on other trails that loop up to the summit with less incline than before. The goal this season is to restore all of the existing paths leading to the summit and connect them into a meandering one-mile summit loop trail. Our goal this season is to have all the 1st hill trails tie into a one-mile loop along the summit of Mount A, still providing various access
points to the Learning Lodge and park facilities. This top portion of trail will ultimately take visitors through a scenic area that will be managed as young forest or early successional habitat. “This gentle, rolling trail will showcase a declining shrubland habitat type, more diverse native plants and wildlife, dramatically increase birding opportunities and improve visitor experiences overall,” said Mt. Agamenticus Conservation coordinator, Robin Kerr. Kerr anticipates scattered grasses and wildflowers to become established initially and then some typical plant species that colonize disturbed areas such as dogwood, speckled alder, meadowsweet and blueberry. “Animals using this type of

habitat that might be seen from the trail at Mt. Agamenticus include ruffed grouse, American woodcock, blue-spotted salamander, Eastern towhee, spotted turtle, and common yellowthroat, to name a few,” said Kerr. According to “Wildlife Needs Shrublands; Conserving Habitat in Maine” a brochure developed by Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, many species of wildlife require early successional habitat for annual life needs. They utilize the protective dense cover for shelter or raising young. The plants growing in these areas also provide an abundance of berries and fruit, eaten by many different birds and mammals. There has been a drastic decline of this habitat type in the northeast over the last 100 years due in large part to land-use change (farm abandonment), human development, fewer large beaver impoundments, fire suppression, and natural forest succession. As a result, those species of plants, mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles that require this habitat for survival are becoming increasingly rare. “We aim to re-establish the summit trails, to develop a more accessible loop trail that will provide wildlife viewing and scenic opportunities while promoting this important shrubland or young forest habitat” said Kerr. “We have lots of work to do, and we can use more help.” The volunteer workday is from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Work gloves,
sturdy shoes, and a water bottle are recommended. The Conservation Program will provide tools. Volunteers are asked to confirm their attendance in ad-

will be hard to perceive -- it will just seem a bit dull. When a wine is more noticeably heat-damaged, it’s marked by aromas of stewed fruit and burnt sugar. When heat damage is severe, the wine will expand inside the bottle - pushing out the cork and breaking its seal, thus spoiling the wine by exposing it to too much oxygen. Already, it looks like this might be the hottest summer in history. So keep cool. And don’t forget to chill your wines. David White, a wine writer, is the founder and editor of Terroirist.com. His columns are housed at Wines.com, the fastest growing wine portal on the Internet.

onto a special bottle for a long time, most experts agree that it should be stored somewhere cool and dark - wine cellars are typically kept at about 55 degrees. This allows a wine to develop slowly and predictably, hopefully becoming more complex and interesting over time. Wines stored at higher temperatures will age more quickly and can develop off flavors and aromas. It’s also worth noting that wine is perishable and can spoil very quickly when exposed to extreme heat. This was another concern of mine last weekend. Like ice cream, wine can be destroyed when left outside - or even worse, in a car - on a hot summer day. If a wine is just slightly “cooked,” the damage

with ice. She quickly took the white wines and threw them in the coolers. The reds, though, remained on a table, baking under the hot sun. So I asked how I could help, offering to put the reds in a refrigerator or toss them in a different cooler. She looked at me like I was insane. “I’ve been doing this for years, and I’ve never heard of chilling reds,” she declared, incredulously. I politely noted the sweltering heat, and suggested that guests would prefer cool wine which would quickly warm once poured - to wine that had been sitting in the hot sun all day. “Well, you’re the expert,” she answered, proceeding to put the reds on ice. “But I’ve always been told that red wines are served at room temperature.” And there it was, the world’s most pervasive wine myth. The notion that reds should be served at room temperature is why most people - and even most bars, restaurants, and caterers - serve red wines too warm. Before the advent of thermostats, homes were much cooler than they are today. So serving red wine at ‘room temperature’ made sense - it still made for a refreshing beverage. Today, most Americans keep their homes at about 72 degrees. At this temperature, alcohol is more obvious, which distorts the aromas and flavors of a wine. Warm wines generally seem rough, unstructured, and alcoholic. These traits only get worse as a wine heats up. Conversely, most white wines are consumed when they’re too cold. Most consumers serve whites straight from the refrigerator, and most restaurants serve them straight from an ice bucket. Serving any wine at such low temperatures will mask its flavors. Fortunately, you don’t need a fancy wine refrigerator to serve wine at its optimal temperature. If you’re drinking a red wine, pop it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes. If you’re drinking a white wine, pull it out of the fridge about 20-30 minutes before you’re going to drink it. As wine critic Bill Ward recently explained, “Basically, all wine should be chilled, but not too much, and served between 43 degrees (sweet or crisp whites, bubbles) and 65 degrees (hearty reds). Richer whites (Chardonnay) and lighter reds (Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet Franc) fall in between.” Temperature doesn’t just matter when serving wine, it also matters when storing it. Goodall Announces Partnership with Casella Waste Systems and Green Waste Stream SANFORD – Goodall Hospital is proud to announce its partnership with Casella Waste Systems and Green Waste Stream, LLC in an effort to reduce the amount of waste produced by the hospital. Goodall has installed the 1,000lb/day Biogreen360 Food Digester unit in their Food Service Department. The BioGreen360 is a selfcontained, continual feed organic disposal system designed to use a patented microbe formulae that biologically converts food waste into compostable material. It accomplishes this by accelerating the natural decomposition process by maintaining optimal levels of aeration, moisture and temperature. The digester reduces food waste volume by an impressive 90 percent and completes a full cycle within 24 hours. “Casella offers the Biogreen360’s on-site food digester because it consumes no fresh water, discharges no environmentally damaging gray water, and significantly reduces the amount of waste produced by our customers.” said Rich Alercio, recycling specialist for Casella Waste Systems. “The food digester is ideal for helping customers, such as Goodall Hospi-
tal, increase their recycling rates and achieve their sustainability objectives.” “Goodall Hospital is leading the way in Maine as not only the first hospital, but the first organization or business, to utilize this technology.” said Paul Grillo, president and CEO of Green Waste Stream, LLC. “Working with the individuals at Goodall Hospital, coupled with Casella’s experience in serving the waste industry, extensive product line and reputa-
all. Supporting local builds community.” Kennebunk Savings was business Fair Tide’s business sponsor for June. “Kennebunk Savings has been such a strong support to Fair Tide over the years and they epitomize what it means to be a local business,” said McGaughey. “They support other local nonprofits in so many ways, so I think it’s important we let our supporters and the general community know. Their support means a great deal to our agency and those we serve.” Founded in 1998, Fair Tide is a prevention program that combines safe, affordable housing with comprehensive supportive services to keep people safe as they gain the necessary skills to obtain and maintain permanent housing. Proceeds from the Thrift Store, which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., directly support the Fair Tide program. For more information, visit www.fairtide. org, or call 207-439-6376.

The donation provides essential unrestricted funding for Great Works for land preservation, stewardship of lands, and ongoing programs. “Over the years, Great Works Regional Land Trust has often been in the position of thanking Kennebunk Savings for their commitment to the environment and other community causes,” said Tin Smith, the president of Great Works Regional Land Trust board of directors. “We never underestimate their generosity and the value of community, and we thank Kennebunk Savings’ customers for their votes,” said Smith, who is also Stewardship Coordinator for the Wells National Estuarine Reserve. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Hi Elizabeth, I love your website and think it’s the best one for learning the computer, so keep it up. I have told all the people I know that your site is the best for whatever help they need! What I want to know is that I have a key that says “Print Screen,” but it doesn’t work. Is there anyway I can get it to work? I have Window Vista. Any help you can give me would be great, Stormy Dear Stormy, Back in the days of DOS (before Microsoft came out with Windows) the print screen button on your keyboard did just what the button says, it took a screen capture, and sent that image of what was on your screen directly to the printer. Over time, however, the function of the “Print Screen” key changed from automatically printing your screen capture, to a function of capturing the screen on the clipboard, which gives you the freedom to choose exactly what it is you want to do with the image. Because the “Print Screen” button only captures a screen shot, but doesn’t print it, there are no visual results when pressing the key. I will give you instructions for how to capture a screenshot with the Print Screen key, and then how to either print or save your screenshot capture. 1. When you want to do a screen capture, press the “Print Screen” button on your keyboard. 2. Open your favorite image program. I like to use Irfanview at: www. irfanview. com/ but you don’t have to download a program if you don’t want to. Every version of Microsoft Windows comes with Microsoft Paint in the “Accessories” folder of the start menu. 3. In your image program, click on “Edit” in the menu bar, then “Paste.” This will paste your screenshot capture into the program. 4. Once you have pasted the screen capture into your image program, you can either save it, or print it (or both) using the save and print commands in the menus. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, About a week ago I unplugged all the wires from my computer to organize them better. When I plugged everything back in and pressed the power switch, the computer turned on for a second then it shut off and smoke came out the back. I don’t know what happened, now when I press the power switch, my computer wont turn on at all. I was wondering if you knew what happened and how much it will cost to get it fixed. Thanks for your time! Jim
Hi Jim, It sounds like a capacitor in your power supply blew. This is something that I have seen more and more in the past two years. You will need to replace the whole power supply, they retail for about $60, plus labor if you are not comfortable replacing it yourself. Most of the time, everything is fine once you put in a new power supply. In rare instances, I have seen damage to the motherboard or hard drive which would be much more costly to fix. By the way, it probably has nothing to do with your wire reorganizing. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am getting offers for different things coming from AT&TAppsBeta My virus scanner is not picking this up as a virus but putting it in junk mail. I have added each one I get to blocked sender and blocked senders domain but still get them. Other than change my email address I don’t know what to do. I hope you can help me with my computer problem, Betty Hi Betty, It sounds like you are getting junk email messages from some addresses with att in the “From” field. You have the right idea in blocking the sender, but spammers know that people
will block their message, so they get around that by constantly changing the “From” address. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to get someone to stop sending messages to your email address once they have it. The best solution is really to not let them get your email address in the first place. For now, you have several options. You can change your email address, and then keep it private. Don’t use hot mail or yahoo, those email accounts tend to get a lot of spam. In addition to changing your primary email address, you can create a temporary email address at one of the free email providers like hot mail or yahoo and use that address when filling out online forms and entering contests. You can purchase software that will filter out the junk mail for you. This usually requires work on your part to train the software to keep the messages out of your inbox. Or, you can just keep deleting the junk mail. Elizabeth Hi Computer Lady: I love your newsletter and have used much of your info. I use Mozilla Firefox and
Thunderbird. I’m having a problem with a pop-up called “Text Enhance” which keeps highlighting words on the web pages and pops up with a window showing relevant info & shortcuts. It’s very annoying and I never use it. I’m not sure how I downloaded it and would like to remove from my computer. Thanks, Mary Dear Mary, It sounds like you have been infected with some malware. How do you get malware? Most likely, you downloaded a free program of some kind, and as an added bonus, you got some “helpful” malware program as well. Text Enhance is actually listed in your program files as “I Want This.” To get rid of the pop-ups, open your control panel, go to “Uninstall A Program” and remove the program named, “I Want This.” Elizabeth Website This Week: Craftsy Class: Sewing Machine 911 http://tinyurl.com/sewing911 I love the way the internet has changed the way we learn. I taught myself to sew more than thirty years ago using an old black singer machine that my
grandmother had used to make clothing for my father and his siblings. Back then, it was trial and error, and an occasional trip to the repair shop where I might get a quick lesson on maintaining my machine before I took it back home. Recently, I signed up for a Craftsy class named, Sewing Machine 911, and I wish I could have taken this class thirty years ago. I am only 60 percent of the way through the class, but already I have learned several new things, and am happy to know that once I have the class, I can go back and watch the video over and over again. If you have ever ended up with a tangle of threads in your sewing project, this is the craftsy class you will want to start out with. ‘Cinderella’ Charms at Arundel Barn Playhouse
By Scott Andrews Staff Columnist ARUNDEL – In Richard Rodgers’ autobiography, he states that by the mid-1950s about four million theatergoers had seen “Oklahoma!” on Broadway and another eight million had seen the national tour. But on March 31, 1957, an international television audience of nearly nine times that many saw “Cinderella,” the Rodgers and Hammerstein adaptation of the familiar 17th-century fairy tale with Julie Andrews in the title role. It was a sensational success. Two television remakes followed, in 1967 and 1997; the latter was also released as a film. A stage version has been available since the 1990s, featuring a script that closely adheres to Oscar Hammerstein’s 1957 television special. It has

never been seen on Broadway, but has proved popular with school groups, community theaters and regional professional companies. For its third show of 2012, Arundel Barn Playhouse is running a charming professional production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.” The show is a good fit for this rustic barn, converted to a theater fifteen years ago. Producing artistic director Adrienne Wilson Grant typically draws her actors from the musical theater programs of colleges and conservatories, and “Cinderella” is ideally suited to a young and enthusiastic cast. Crucial to the success of “Cinderella” is the actress in the title role. I liked Jenna Pastuszek, who conveys both strength and warmth from her first big number, “In My Own Little Corner,” through the wonderful love duet, “Ten Minutes Ago.” Her duet partner, handsome, charming bachelor prince Christopher, is nicely played by John Carucci, who combines the feelings of frustration with his boring royal life with a young man’s romantic ardor. Both Pastuszek and Carucci hail from New York University’s graduate program in musical theater. One of Hammerstein’s most memorable lines is delivered by Cinderella as she dreams about going to the royal ball: “Impossible things are happening every day.” The comic gem of Hammerstein’s book is the stepmother, a pompous and imperious taskmaster. Fjaere Harder nails this role. Her plastic face contorts into shapes and her highfalutin voice and mannerisms generate lots of laughs. The two stepsisters, played by Lauren Lindsey and Emily Rogers, are buffoons. Taken as
a trio, stepmother and stepsisters create a ludicrously comic version of the Furies of Greek myth. Three other actors perform adequately in less interesting roles: Michael Soldati as the King, Mel Bills playing the Queen and Holland Hamilton depicting the Godmother. Costume designer Stephanie Gift and set designer Christopher Rhoton have created a brilliantly colorful make-believe world that has a comfortable old-time feel, although it’s not set in any specific period. Kudos are especially earned by Timothy Reed, who converted a borrowed horse carriage (from the Wells General Store) into Cinderella’s magical pumpkin-coach that whisks her to the royal ball. I also appreciated the overall aesthetic and dramatic sense of Daniel Gaouette, who serves as director and choreographer. There are several large ensemble scenes where Gaouette’s choreography effectively underscores action and intensifies moods.

KENNEBUNKPORT – On Sunday, July 22, from 5 to 6 p.m., the Colony Hotel, at 140 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport, will present a concert of the best songs of the Big Band era in the Carriage House, just below the main hotel entrance. The sparkling Coastal Sound quartet will present a great selection of fabulous tunes made famous by the likes of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, and more. The members of Coastal Sound are outstanding reedsman Jack Kupp, master trumpeter Thomas Kremser, expert drummer Ron Breton, and, of course, “Maestro” Warren King on piano. As an added bonus, favorite local tenor John Manzo will be crooning along with the band. The Animal Welfare Society, in West Kennebunk, will benefit from this concert. As in prior years, the Colony concerts benefit local non-profits. This year, concert tickets are $5, and season tickets will be available: any five concerts for $20. Tickets can be purchased at the concerts, both before and after. All concerts
in the series run from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons. On July 29, King will present his unruly band of local singers in the Carriage House, attacking some of the silliest songs ever committed to sheet music. All year long, he sifts through reams of old sheet music, looking for songs more ridiculous than ever. The Maine Lobstermen’s Association will benefit from the foolishness. Grammy Award-winning Pianist at River Tree Arts KENNEBUNK – Grammy award-winning jazz pianist Paul Sullivan will play a concert at River Tree Arts on July 27 at 7 p.m. The concert is being presented in conjunction with the Painters, Players, and Poets exhibition showing at River Tree’s Irvine Art Gallery through August 4. This integrated, multi-media art experience features the work of forty-nine Maine-based artists, writers, composers, & furniture-makers. The composers and poets identified a living Maine painter whose work inspired them, and then interpreted a specific painting through poetry or musical composition. For Painters, Players, and Poets, Sullivan interpreted the painting Cecile by Cynthia Stroud in his composition Cecile. Sullivan has enjoyed a richly varied and distinguished career as a composer and a pianist. As a soloist, with his trio, and as a member of the Paul Winter Consort, he has played concert tours throughout the world. He has performed among the dunes of the Negev Desert, in Leonard Bernstein’s living room, and on the stages of many of the world’s finest concert halls. As a jazz player he has worked in some of New York’s most prestigious clubs, and has played with a wide variety of jazz masters from Benny Goodman to Tommy Flanagan. WELLS – Oriental rugs, majolica pottery antique oil paintings and old bottles mixed with stylish functional housewares, old and new books and jewelry all await you at our Thrift Shop. We’re also adding ladies clothing and fashion accessories to our eclectic mix. We are now accepting donations of seasonal ladies’ clothing during business hours, 11am4pm Mon-Sat. Please donate only clean, ready to wear items. Safe Haven does house cleanouts and will haul if you wish to donate but have no way to get the items to us. We will be happy to come and transport what we can sell. Special thanks to Judy and Rex Lambert who hosted last Saturday’s Kitty Adoption Event at their shops, Bell Farm Antiques and Backyard Birds & Frills in York. The adoption event was very successful and their lily sale kept them busy digging in their beautiful gardens. Safe Haven was the recipient of the proceeds of their lily sale. We can’t thank this wonderful couple enough for all they do for Safe Haven every month. A big “Get Well” wish to Norma Buffum who helps us every Tuesday in our office. Norma, who is a young 80 years old, recently had heart surgery. She’s a remarkable woman who loves helping Safe Haven keep its paperwork in order. Every Tues-
day we enjoy her company and good humor and boy do we miss her while she is recuperating. Norma, we can’t wait to have you back! Most Safe Haven volunteers are involved in kitten care in one way or another. There is an abundance of kittens lately and no shortage is expected any time soon. Despite all the lowcost spay-neuter clinics, some people simply are not thoughtful or kind enough to have their cats spayed or neutered. What’s it going to take to eliminate the wave of kittens born every year? Until we eliminate these unwanted pregnancies, we’ll keep making room to accept these dear little ones and their mommas, who are just kittens themselves. If you can offer your

home temporarily to a family of kittens and their mother, please call. Safe Haven will even pay for the vet bills, food and litter. Either way, we need your help. The more foster homes we have, the more kitties we can rescue. A very special kitty named Fern needs a very special home. This beautiful bobtail kitty was rescued from a farm in pretty sorry condition. Unluckily, she tested positive (twice) for the Feline Leukemia virus. She acts normal and seems perfectly healthy, but because of the virus, she must be an “only cat” or live with another cat with the feline Leukemia virus. Fern is an extremely sweet kitty who deserves lots of love and a happy environment where she can get the attention she craves. Her lifespan may be shorter than other kitties so we want her to have a happy home as soon as possible. Safe Haven will pay for all her medical care while Fern is in your care. Please inquire about this wonderful very deserving kitty. This weekend: July 21 & 22: Yard Sale, Bake Sale, Bottle Drive, Plant Sale. Hours: Sat 8am-3pm, Sun 9am-2pm. Furniture, household items and more. Don’t miss this one! All proceeds benefit our Animal Medical Fund. Our Adoption Center and Thrift Shop will be open as well. FMI 646-1611.
NORTH BERWICK – Meet Scully… This dear sweet fourmonth-old orange kitten came into the ACAR from the Berwick area suffering from severe acid burns on his neck and shoulder area. Scully is a real trooper, never complained when he was at the vets for treatment, and is a real hero about taking his meds and topical treatments. He is now hoping one of you folks will provide him a new family to love. Scully is neutered & his vet has released him for adoption. Scully’s vaccinations are up to date; he has been treated for worms, fleas and ticks. Scully is a very active happy boy who plays well with other pets in his foster home. He also loves to sit in a lap for naptime, and hug time. Scully will need a few more days of wound cleaning which is an easy cleaning job and applying a topical medication, Scully enjoys the fussing made over him. Scully will probably have a large scar on his neck and shoulders area when his treatments are done. If you would like to give a new start to a sweet orange love bug kitten Scully hopes that you will arrange time in your busy summer schedule to stop by the adoption center to meet him. In addition to our featured kitten, Scully, ACAR has a very nice selection of young kittens, was Michael’s dog. He was also adopted from The Animal Welfare Society of Kennebunk and he will be leading the ride in Michael’s truck. Thank you, I hope to see you there, Nick

SPORTS The Golf Grip: Caress The Club, Don’t Strangle It Golf Tips from a Local Pro CAPE NEDDICK One of the biggest challenges I see when playing with amateurs is that they put a literal chokehold on their club when they grip it. Maybe it all stems from that “grip it and rip it” mentality. Unfortunately, strangling your club will only lead to squeezing the life out of your game. Here are a couple of thoughts that may help. Sam Snead, one of golf’s legends, said the best advice he ever got concerning the grip was to hold it like a little bird - firm enough so it won’t fly away, but not hard enough to hurt it. In other words, grip the club just tight enough to keep it in your

hands and under control. If you grip the club too tightly, the tension in your hands and lower arms keeps your shoulders from being as flexible as they need to be through the swing. If you can’t turn, you lose
distance. A lot of folks think if they don’t hold on to the club for dear life it will fly out of their hands.
There’s no need to worry about that. As you start your downswing, your grip automatically tightens. It’s second nature, and you won’t even notice it. Golf tip courtesy of Michelle

...AWS from page 28 to meet him. “Panda” Panda bears are depicted as being, cute, cuddly, easy-going, lovable creatures. Our little Panda couldn’t have a more fitting name. This gorgeous sevenyear-old is all of this and more. Panda adores his people and will soak up every bit of attention that is offered to him. This super stud even enjoys being held and brushed. When he isn’t being showered with affection, Panda will find a comfy kitty bed to curl up and nap on while waiting for his next cuddle session. Doesn’t Panda sound like the perfect pet? If you agree, please stop in and meet this sweetheart soon. “Bill” & “Bob” Bill and Bob are adult Dumbo Rats, no doubt a breed named such because of big ears. You probably won’t notice their big ears for a while though, as their big bodies make them look small in comparison. Yes, Bill & Bob probably lived the high life wherever they were in the past, as they’re both a bit on the hefty side. That’s nothing that some quality time on an exercise wheel won’t solve though... lots of quality time. As you might imagine, they prefer to spend their time lazing about in a cozy critter hammock or little home. These two galoots get along great, so they would enjoy finding a new home together, but they can be adopted individually as well. If you’re interested in either of these cute critters, or both of them, then stop on by the shelter today to meet them. Calendar of Events July 21 (Sat) - The Animal Welfare Society Mobile Adoption Team will visit Pet Quarters on Route 1 in Wells with adoptable dogs from 11 - 1. July 22 (Sun) - The Colony Hotel, Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport welcomes the Animal Welfare Society as the recipient of the $5.00 cover charge of tonight’s Summer Concert Series. The feature is selections from the Big Band era, ever-popular tunes from the 1930’s & 1940’s. Open to the public, 5:00 - 6:00pm.

Local Host Families Needed Now for Foreign Teens YORK COUNTY – Foreign high school students are scheduled to arrive soon for academic year homestay programs, and the sponsoring organization needs a few more local host families. The students are anxiously awaiting news of their new families. This is the last chance for these young ambassadors to fulfill their life-long dreams, and their placement deadlines are rapidly approaching. The students are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years, are English-speaking, have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance, and are anxious to share their cultural experiences with their new American families. KITTERY – Tracy Johnson of Kittery, Maine, was surprised to learn that she is the winner of the Portsmouth Community Radio’s June Pledge Drive Grand Prize drawing – a full summer Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share from Heron Pond Farm. With a busy Spring happening in her life, Johnson forgot to sign-up for a CSA

~ News ~ BlixxHorses to Meet & Greet the Residents at Atria KENNEBUNK – On July 20, Lexxie and Fritz will be traveling to Atria Senior Living for some horse therapy. They will give the residents, some who have met the horses before, an opportunity to interact, stroke them and get the sense of calm and well being that animals are capable of giving to humans. It is well known that people who spend time caring for animals, even large ones like horses, enjoy positive effects on overall health. Like dogs and cats, simply being around horses and showing affection which is reciprocated makes people feel good. The effect is produced by endorphins and other chemicals released by the brain including dopamine & serotonin. These substances are responsible for the sense of relaxation and peace that can last for hours. Research has shown many health benefits that result from contact or relationships with animals, including an increase in the efficiency of the lymphatic system to fight infection. The emotional benefits can even reach adults and children who are unresponsive, yet respond positively to animals. Although many believe that the horses’ sole or primary purpose is to be ridden, they
have other values including that of companion. They are social animals like dogs, and enjoy the company of people, but their size requires special consideration. Visiting people in any environment that is foreign and potentially threatening takes time & practice. Training is specific and ongoing to develop security and comfort with unfamiliar situations, foreign objects, sounds, and with strangers and crowds, not unlike training of Therapy Dogs.
Most horses are limited in stimulation because they rarely leave the confines of a barn or go outside of the horse world. The real world can be a very frightening place. Gentle, step-by-step socialization is important for every horse and makes them safer, more confident and secure. The event, which is scheduled for 2 pm, was made possible by Kennebunk Savings Bank and Juliette Coldrich, program director of River Tree Arts. (courtesy photo)
Senior Citizens Fondly Remember School Days ELIOT – The Eliot Historical Society was happy to host almost a dozen local senior citizens who came together to reminisce about their days of being taught in a one-room school. Participants enjoyed describing their various schoolhouses, some in Eliot and some in other places. All agreed they received a very good education, often listening to the lessons as the teacher taught students in the higher grades. Among the artifacts shared were a lunch pail and several prized reading books. Participant Eleanor Pearsall brought along her beautifullykept scrapbook of pictures and articles regarding Eliot’s students and schools, most published in newspapers over the years. Appropriately, the event was held at Schoolhouse #8, the only one of Eliot’s one-room

schools open to the public, now owned and restored by EHS members. Each year the building is visited by Eliot Elementary School’s 2nd graders as a culmination to their unit on Eliot’s history. They are excited to see and hear about the unique features of a school so different from the one they attend. They are always interested in the lesson on the flags flown over the colonies and later the United States, taught by the school master garbed in vintage clothes. The audience at the reminiscing event expressed their appreciation to the participants. In fact, all involved have decided there should be further opportunities to share and learn. Visits to the school are free. To make arrangements, call 207-439-2404, 207-439-2542, 207-439-0186 or 207-748-0040.

PSO to Play KinderKonzert
Kennebunk Free Library has been chosen to take part in Portland Symphony Orchestra’s summer concert tour. The PSO String Quintet will perform their popular KinderKonzert: The Story of Abbie Burgess, at KFL on Monday, July 30 at 6:30 pm. All are welcome; there is no pre-registration needed. The Story of Abbie Burgess tells the true tale of an 11-year-old girl who tended the Matinicus Rock Lighthouse off of Rockland Maine while her mother was sick and her father was caught off-island getting supplies. It was the winter of 1856, and nor’easters pounded the Maine coast repeatedly, keeping her father away for over a month. Abbie’s tale is recounted in the book “Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie” by Connie and Peter Roop, available in the KFL Children’s Room. KinderKonzerts are a fun and interactive way for children ages 3 through 7 to gain exposure to symphony music as they explore the different families of musical instruments. Attendees are encouraged to sing, dance, and engage with the musicians while they learn about classical music and symphony performances. The summer concerts, which are free of charge to the public, are funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

even more excited to be able to fund these six programs.” YEF is an independent, non-profit organization of community volunteers committed to excellence in education. Its mission is to provide funding for innovative and challenging programs in the York Public Schools that are beyond the scope of traditional funding. With funds raised through community-based activities, YEF awards grants for exceptional projects and programs proposed by York educators and employees at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Some of the grants include: “Picture This!” is an art appreciation program for kindergarten students. Coordinated by Phyllis Giordano and April Noble at Village Elementary School, “Picture This!” will utilize art work from the permanent collection of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art to support specific units of kindergarten study and give students the opportunity to develop different skills and perspectives when relating to art. The program will culminate in a field trip to the Museum. Flo Larson, Library Ed. Tech. and Liz Reisz, Director, Library/Media Services at York Middle School will receive a
grant to fund the initial purchase of a school-district specific library of downloadable eBooks geared toward readers in grades 3-12, as well as six eReaders for the YMS library. Suzi Young, grade 5 teacher at York Middle School, will be awarded a grant to fund the purchase of materials to create puppets, and the hiring of a professional puppeteer to teach all 5th grade students how to make puppets and perform with them. “Activating Learners with Student Response Remotes” is a project created by Michael Cleary, social studies teacher at York High School. With funding provided by YEF Mr. Cleary will purchase student response remotes for use in high school social studies classes. The devices are designed to enhance student classroom engagement and provide immediate feedback on student comprehension. In related news, YEF’s primary fundraiser - “Uncorked!” - took place on May 6 at The Cliff House in Ogunquit. With the support of more than 160 attendees, as well as the many area businesses and craftspeople that provided products and services for the silent auction, the benefit raised more than $15,000 for the
Foundation’s grant fund. At the York School Board meeting on June 6, YEF board member John Alexander presented the first “Henry R. Scipione Award” to outgoing Superintendent Scipione. The Foundation wished to honor Dr. Scipione, as his early involvement was critical to the creation and development of the York Education Foundation. In the future YEF will memorialize Dr. Scipione’s efforts by giving the award “to an educator whose efforts serve to promote and advance excellence in education for students of the York Public Schools.” Visit the foundation’s website at www.yorkeducationfoundation.org, and contact any board member.
