~ News ~ Adult Degree Completion Scholarship Available STATEWIDE One of the many challenges adults face as they return to college is financing their education. The University of Maine System (UMS) has an Adult Degree Completion Scholarship fund helping Maine residents return to school and complete their academic studies. For many, these may have begun years ago and were not completed for a variety of reasons. These funds are dedicated to support adult students returning to college after an absence of at least three years or more and who are completing their very first bac-

calaureate degree Applicants may qualify for up to $4,000 per academic year for up to eight consecutive semesters. Students returning to school have two opportunities to apply for the Adult Degree Completion Scholarship. Each year the deadlines for new applicants are: August 1 – to be considered for a full academic year award beginning in the fall semester; December 1 – to be considered for a spring semester award; and all renewal applications are due June 1. The electronic application takes approximately 15 minutes to

complete and may be found online at ums-scholarship.fluidreview. com. Prior to completing the application, we recommend contacting your campus Navigator (www. maine.edu/future-students/adultstudents/concierge/) to review your eligibility and discuss your

plan for completing your bachelor’s degree. Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for consideration: Must be a resident of the state of Maine; must be a matriculated student at a UMS institution seeking a first baccalaureate degree; must be an undergraduate reentry

student who has experienced a gap (three years or more) in the pursuit of postsecondary education; must have a minimum of 30 credits earned from any institution toward your degree; must demonstrate financial need as determined by a completed FAFSA; and must be registered at least part time: 6-8 credits per semester.

~ News ~ Summer Fun at Hamilton House SOUTH BERWICK Join Historic New England education staff for summer activities in the cottage and gardens at Hamilton House, Mondays through August 14, 10 a.m. - noon. Ideal for ages 4-10, the program allows for exploration of the site's history and includes a tour of Hamilton House designed especially for families (at 11:30 a.m.). Each week will offer a Story Walk, hands-on activities, and art projects to foster creativity and fun. Families are encouraged to pack a snack and enjoy a summer day much like Elizabeth and Elise Tyson and their good friend Sarah Orne Jewett did at the turn of the twentieth century. Now in its second year, the summer program will include both new activities and returning favorites. Pages of the beloved children’s book, Farmer Will, by

local author Jane Cowen-Fletcher, will be placed along a path for parents and kids to read aloud as they walk through the story. A portable kit of watercolors will invite all ages to create their own sets of paintings inspired by the garden flowers. An old-fashioned camera viewfinder will give kids the chance to play with photography. New this summer will be map-making, block printing and wallpaper designs, and a tiny house with a whimsical mural. Family Days are organized by Historic New England Maine Education Program Coordinator Julia Einstein. $5 per family, free to Historic New England members. This is a drop-in program and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Hamilton House is located at 40 Vaughan’s Lane, South Berwick. FMI: www.historicnewengland.com.

~ News ~ Land for Maine’s Future Destinations Passport STATEWIDE This summer, Maine people are invited to explore the more than 150 destinations that have been conserved with support from the Land for Maine’s Future (LMF) program over the past three decades. Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, LMF has secured public access to more than 600,000 acres in the state, offering opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, and ATV riding. To help visitors plan their next outdoor adventure, an LMF Passport is now available, featuring 35 destinations. “The new passport offers something for everyone, including gentle nature paths, challenging mountain hikes, extensive ATV trails, scenic picnic locales, popular fishing spots, sandy beaches, and canoe-friendly waters, explained Maine Coast Heritage

Trust President Tim Glidden. Participants can customize their explorations by using a new website (www.landformainesfuture.org) with information on more than 150 places to visit. Passport holders who explore at least three LMF destinations this summer and upload a photo of their passport will be awarded a handy “LMF Works for ME flashlight carabiner. “No matter where you are in our state, you’re never far from a special place that’s available to the public today because of the Land for Maine’s Future program, shared Kate Dempsey, State Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine. “Best of all, since LMF’s work has been funded by Maine people for the past 30 years, these properties belong to all of us forever. People who visit LMF destinations this summer are also

encouraged to share their experiences on a new “LMF Works for ME photo gallery. Instagram users can post their images to the gallery by using #LMFWorksforME, and anyone who takes a photo at an LMF destination and uploads it directly onto the gallery at www.landformainesfuture.org will have the opportunity to win camping gear donated by L.L. Bean, an overnight stay at a sporting camp in the Maine Woods donated by the Appalachian Mountain Club, and other prizes. There will be a drawing in October to announce the winners, who will be selected at random (limit one entry per person). Both programs run through October 1.

“Steel Magnolias” at Hackmatack

BERWICK The performance of “Steel Magnolia” opens on Friday, July 28 at 8 p.m. at the Hackmatack Playhouse, 538 School St, Berwick. Tickets are $30 per person and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Kennebunk Land Trust. Six women, three generations. This is the foundation of “Steel Magnolias.” It is also the story of the six actors who were cast in this story of a group of gossipy southern ladies who meet at a small town beauty parlor. “It’s so much about generations of mothers and daughters,” said Caitlin Lowans, director of the show. “And it’s great that a lot of of the actors have those experiences, which means we really have that perspective from both sides of that relationship in the room.” The play highlights the story of two young women on the brink of adulthood, two mothers struggling with parenting and two grandmothers, equipped with the benefits and bothers of aging. “Steel Magnolias,” both humorous and touching, explores the common need for family, friends and community. Set in Louisiana, the beauty shop brings together anybody who is anybody. All of them have their hair done here. The shop assistant is not sure whether or not she is still married and the wise-cracking owner dispenses shampoos along with free advice to such characters as the town's rich curmudgeon, an eccentric millionaire with a

raging sweet tooth and the local social leader. Written by Robert Harling, based on his experience with his sister's death, the play opened off broadway in 1987. The title suggests women are as delicate as

magnolias and as tough as steel. “Steel Magnolias” runs for three weeks Wednesday to Saturdays at 8 p.m. and 2 p.m., Thursdays. Tickets are available by calling 207-698-1807 or on line at hackmatack.org.

$18 Million in Unclaimed Property Returned to Mainers STATEWIDE The Office of the Treasurer, with the help of legislative offices, has shattered all records, returning just over $18 million in unclaimed property to Mainers in FY 2017. The previous record, set last year, was $16.1 million. Every year, financial property is turned over to the Treasury by Maine businesses as a result of incorrect addresses, misspelled names and dormant accounts. At present, the Treasurer's unclaimed property database includes more than $232

million. Fortunately, these properties can be claimed by the rightful owners through the Treasurer's office at any time by going to www.maine. gov/upsearch, where you can search and file a claim.

Health & Fitness ...SUMMER from page 18 decrease the risk of chronic diseases. But he also recommends doing so in moderation because fall-harvested wheat is in-season and much easier to digest. • Save the warm soups, stews and heavy foods for winter. It might be tough to resist a hearty stew, but the microbes in our bodies in winter are geared toward keeping us warm. As we move into warm weather months, the body has transitioned to microbes that facilitate fat burning, weight loss and renewed energy. In the summer go for lighter fare such as fruits, leafy greens, beans and cucumbers. • Hot, spicy foods don’t mix with summer. If you like spicy foods better get them on the table during the spring when the body is transitioning from the winter. Once summer rolls around it’s best to avoid hot and spicy foods; which include coffee, red meat and eggs – all of which can put undue stress on organs such as the prostate, liver, stomach and small intestines.

• Eat the chicken, not the egg. While eggs are considered a warm food that should be avoided during summer months, chicken is considered a cool food. A 2016 study found that men who ate chicken four times a week had a 17 percent less chance of getting prostate cancer, compared to men who

ate poultry less than twice a month. • Drink water before meals. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your body, especially during the summer. Water is the best way to stay hydrated, but it’s best to drink water 15-30 minutes before a meal. Drink-

ing it during a meal will drown out stomach acid, which breaks down hard to digest proteins.

4 Tips to Sleep Better during Allergy Season Spring is the season of renewal. Plants and trees start to rebound from the harsh winter that claimed most of their leaves and vegetation. Birds return from their Southern vacations, serenade us with their morning songs and rebuild their nests in preparation for new arrivals. Unfortunately, there is another renewal that many people don’t look forward to in the spring: the return of

hay fever season along with symptoms such as sneezing and sniffling that can give you sleepless nights. In an allergy survey conducted by HayMax, 92 percent of respondents said their hay fever symptoms affect their work, school or daily routine, which includes sleep patterns. “The trick to sleeping well when you suffer from hay fever is to reduce the amount of pollen getting into your body

at night, says Max Wiseberg, creator of HayMax Allergen Barrier Balm. People can tolerate a certain amount of pollen without reaction, he says, but once this amount is exceeded – called the trigger level – hay fever symptoms start to occur. Stay below this level at night, you won’t get the symptoms and your sleep won’t be affected. Go above it and that’s when the trouble starts.

Wiseberg offers a few tips on how to avoid reaching that trigger level, allowing you to rest easy at night. Keep bedding and fabrics clean. Vacuum the house regularly, especially beds and fabrics, such as bed covers and curtains, to remove pollen, dust and pet allergen particles. Wash bedding regularly to remove allergens and dry them indoors rather than on a clothes line to prevent pollen particles being blown onto them by the wind. Keep the house closed from the outside world. Close windows and use an air conditioner, preferably with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter to capture pollen and dust particles, as well as cool and circulate the air. Have a nightly routine before bed. Shower at night before sleeping to remove pollen particles and pet hair from your hair and body. Clear the nasal passages with water, or use a saline nasal spray, to

clear pollen from the nose. Finally, apply an allergen barrier balm to the nostrils and around the bones of the eyes to trap pollen, dust and pet allergens before they enter the body. Ensure that pets are well groomed. If you own a pet, shampoo it as much as possible to remove pet allergens and pollen particles, or ban it from the bedroom completely. “Loss of sleep because of hay fever is very significant, as it can impact how a person functions the next day at school or at work,â€? Wiseberg says. “The effect of sleep deprivation on productivity and health loses costs companies billions of dollars each year.â€? Max Wiseberg is the creator of HayMax™ (www. haymax.us), a natural, organic balm that traps allergens when applied to the nostrils. As a lifelong hay fever sufferer, he was inspired to develop the balm when other allergy remedies didn’t work for him. ‘Community Table’ Offers Diners a New Experience CAPE NEDDICK Responding to local interest in the popular metro trend of communal dining, Clay Hill Farm will offer a new ‘Community table’ option on Tuesday nights this summer. Community tables offer diners a chance to connect with new people and engage in conversation over dinner in a casual, comfortable format. According to a recent piece on the rise of communal dining in the San Diego Tribune, “…these come-one-comeall seating arrangements are bringing busy people together to emulate the cozy sensation of a family meal; and in the process,

some argue, they are also helping to re-connect individuals and communities in an increasingly internet-based digital age.” Offering an alternative to society’s social media format of connectivity, communal dining is particularly popular among solo diners craving diversity and discussion over dinner- sharing experiences and adventures with others in a relaxed familial setting. While this ‘3D’ Dining experience of dinner, diversity and discussion may have a modern feel, “…it can bring people together to create connection in a more traditional way”, said Donna Lewis, co-owner of Clay

Hill Farm. The spirit of Clay Hill Farm’s community table might best be expressed in the words of William Yeats, “There are no strangers here; only friends you haven't yet met”. Should this trend catch on, a community table could be offered nightly at Clay Hill Farm year ‘round. Interested diners are encouraged to make reservations for the Tuesday night community table to help the restaurant gauge the size, but walk-ins are always welcome. The restaurant’s nightly a la carte menu will be offered. For reservations: 207-361-2272; www.clayhillfarm.com.

“Reach” Fashion – New Look in Wells WELLS A new look is on the fashion scene in Wells, and anyone can be part of it. Reach Fashion has opened it’s doors and is bringing a new type of fashion experience. Giovanni Capato is the owner and creative director of this new business which opened early in June. The store offers fun and casual women’s clothing, accessories, some home decor, and alterations. Also featured are sewing lessons and fashion camps, as well as the unique “Rent-a-Look” service. “Since I could remember I have always had a passionate enthusiasm for anything to do with fashion.” Says Capato, a Brazilian native who emigrated to the United States nearly 20 years ago. He started out modeling in São Paulo, Brazil and then followed his dream to come to the United States and locating in Boston. When he first arrived he didn’t speak much English and had almost no money. He took on many various jobs while he learned the language and worked to get to the point where he was able to have his own business. It began when he purchased a tailoring shop in Boston and named it Giovanni’s Atelier. Under the tutoring of the Master Tailor who was retiring from his business he developed his sewing skills, giving him the ability to express his creative side in the designing and construction of clothing. Prior to all of this, Giovanni worked on many styling projects, costuming for performers of the Boston Ballet, wardrobing a production of a popular band’s MTV music video, and styling a contestant

on the Apprentice. One of Capato’s proudest moments occurred when a highly respected Soprano opera singer performed on stage in Boston wearing one of his own creations. After three years in Boston, he decided to sell the shop and move the business closer to his home north of the city where he was starting his family. It was in Haverhill’s Arts District that Capato first established Reach Fashion, a woman’s clothing boutique. He says, “I wanted to have clothing and accessories that were affordable and stylish.” As it turns out, the boutique itself wasn’t enough for him, there was more that he wanted to do with the business. When additional space became

available he expanded the business and began teaching sewing lessons. The sewing lessons and fashion camps he offered caught on fast. Students and parents of his “young fashionistas”, as he calls them, have expressed heartfelt appreciation for what they have learned and how he has inspired them to bethemselves and to have confidence in their creativity. Capato finds the process of helping his students develop new skills and express their creativity as truly rewarding. Capato’s business motto is Learn-CreateShare, and he is excited to be bringing that expression of his passion here to the Wells community and it’s visitors.

~ Pets ~

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS People surrender cats for many reasons. Sometimes a family member becomes allergic, becomes ill or dies, and their kitty is suddenly homeless. Some of these events can’t be helped. But often it’s due to a person having to move and being unable to find housing that allows pets. This can and must change. We’ve watched too many Mainers tearfully saying goodbye to their cats because of this lack of pet-friendly housing. Many are seniors or single people whose only companion is their kitty. Their pet provides loving companionship, comfort, and even a purpose in life. No one should

be forced to give up a beloved pet due to lack of affordable housing that allows pets. Safe Haven recently experienced this heartbreaking situation again. An elderly couple had to move but found their kitty could not live there. They had to surrender their beloved elder cat. Both the couple and the cat are tragically heartbroken. They visit her at our shelter often, but ache for her constant friendship and love. They’re now searching for new affordable housing that allows pets, and we pray they find a place soon. Luckily there is a way to search online for pet-friendly

housing. Visit Zillow.com and search for 'Maine Pet Friendly Apartments & Houses For Rent.' When I checked there were 265 rentals listed. We urge all landlords to consider allowing pets at their properties. If you do offer pet-friendly housing, we’d be happy to put you on a list at our shelter. Please send your info to Safe Haven, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090. Thank you. If you live in pet-friendly accommodations, we urge you to please set a great example of how responsible and clean pet owners are. This will encourage your landlord to continue to rent to pet owners. Pictured is Jingles enjoying one of the new cat beds donated by longtime supporters Rhonda and Sharon. They adhere to the glass with suction cups and can hold up to 60 pounds. Jingles is a great kitty ready for a new home. Young, friendly and handsome he wants to be that special kitty in your life.

Cali Kitty is also hoping that her new family will be able to provide her with an indoor only life style for her long term safety, as she has never been an outside cat and does not have the life skills to survive in that environment. This lovely young lady would so like to make your acquaintance this Saturday at the Sanford adoption center. Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Meet Keyera, a very friendly cat with a quiet dignity about her. But she goes wild when brushed and greeted by her foster mom. For a 10-year-old, she’s got plenty of spunk. The thing about Keyera is that she is completely blind, but it makes no difference to her. She gets around as easily as if she could see, and “watched her foster mom’s pet bird from the shelf near the cage. She can even still catch a string if you play with her! She is friendly with other cats and has been fine around at least one small dog. Her adoption fee is only $10. Stop by to meet her. Upcoming Events Saturday, July 22 - The AWS Parade Brigade will be marching in the parade during the Shapleigh Community Days, which begins at 9 a.m. from Weaver's Field, at the corner of 21st S. and Shapleigh Corner Road. If you'd like to join the Parade Brigade, visit our site to learn more and register in advance. Sunday, July 23 - Stop by AWS with your puppy, younger

than 6-months and less than 2-lbs, for the Drop-In Puppy Social Hour from 10-11 a.m. AWS trainers will be on hand to facilitate and provide training information. No registration needed, $12 fee per hour. We also have a session on Sunday, July 30. Tuesday, July 25 - AWS will be one of the drop-off points for the WGME 13 Pet Food Drive & Adoption Day. Our friends from WGME 13 will be at AWS from 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. to happily and excitedly accept donations. Stop by with a bag of dog food, a case of wet cat food, or some litter.

C. Dewitt Hardy III, 77 OGUNQUIT – Maine artist C. Dewitt Hardy III, 77, died suddenly on Saturday, July 8, in Ogunquit where he began his long career as a painter, teacher, and mentor to dozens of aspiring artists. Born in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of Jane Upchurch and C. Dewitt Hardy II. His father taught at the University

C. Dewitt Hardy III of Maine Orono where Dewitt spent part of his early life. Dewitt then lived in Cleveland Heights, OH for much of his youth and later attended Syracuse University. As a teenager, he spent several summers in Ogunquit where he was befriended by painter Ed Betts who became a mentor. After college, he and his first wife Pat moved to the town and he became curator at the Ogunquit Museum of Art while mastering drawing and watercolor landscapes, still lifes and figures. Early on, critics, collectors, and other artists recognized his expertise in the medium, allowing Hardy to exhibit his work at the Frank Rehn Gallery which also represented Edward Hopper at the time. His work hangs in many major museums

nationwide and is part of numerous private collections. For many years, he and Pat hosted a group that drew and painted the model in their North Berwick home, and “The Art Mafia lives on. That group describes itself as a sort of pebble in a pond, radiating love, camaraderie, and support to many who became or aspired to be professional artists. As a teacher at colleges and schools around New England, Dewitt was an artistic advisor and inspiration to many. Het was a long-time member and current president of the Ogunquit Art Association, and his work regularly appeared at their summertime Barn Gallery shows. A natural athlete, Dewitt played competitive baseball and ice hockey into his 50s. Dewitt is survived by his

wife Deirdre Williams and her sons Bo and Dylan, of South Berwick; his first wife Pat and sons Ethan and Adam both of North Berwick, and Harris of Somerville, MA; his sisters Royse Crall of Copley, OH, and Marisa Oriti, of Pownal; and his daughters, Cordelia and Clare Johnson of NYC. Dewitt remained close to his first cousins Brooke Parkin of Brunswick, and Scott Parkin of Reston, VA. Any donations in his memory may be sent to the Ogunquit Art Association, PO box 794, Ogunquit, ME 03907. A Bon Voyage party will be held at the end of summer. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed online at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. See OBITS page 30...

Benjamin M. LaPanne LEBANON – Benjamin M. LaPanne, loving son, doting father and loyal friend, died Wednesday, July 12, 2017

~ Obituaries ~ in North Berwick after a long struggle with addiction. He was born in Calais before his family moved to Lebanon, where Ben was active in pee-wee football, baseball and lacrosse. As he grew older, his love of football grew bigger and he excelled on the Noble Football field. His love of the game continued long after high school days and he was currently a member of the Seacoast Warhawks, an NEFL Semiprofessional football league. In honor of Ben, the NEFL game on August 19th will be a benefit game for his children’s future. Ben had been a carpenter by trade for years, and quite talented. He had worked for various carpenters, among them were Shawn Hanson, Matt O’Mera, R.J. LaPanne Builders and currently at Creative Coast Construction.

Ben will be remembered as such a happy kid; full of charm with a smile that could light up the room. He grew up in Lebanon and attended the Union Free Will Baptist Church in West Lebanon. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and camping with his close group of friends he had there. Ben shot his first big buck in back of his family’s home and was so proud of himself for his abilities. He loved all aspects of the outdoors but his first true love was that of his family; especially his 3 children, Joshua, Kaia and Mariah. They were his shining light and center of his world. His light will continue to shine through them. Ben will forever be missed by his parents, Richard and Shelley (Turgeon) LaPanne, his brother, David LaPanne and

his companion Amanda Ouellette; maternal grandmother, Frances Turgeon, all of Lebanon; paternal grandmother Alice LaPanne of Rochester, NH; his son Joshua Peters of Sanford; two daughters Kaia and Mariah LaPanne of Springvale as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A celebration of Ben’s life was held on Monday, July 17 at the Union Free Will Baptist Church, 613 Jim Grant Road, West Lebanon. A ‘YouCaring’ fund has been set up for the children for donations at http://bit.ly/2t7qBmm or may be mailed directly to the LaPanne Family, 56 Furbish Road, Lebanon, ME 04027. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.

~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, We have Verizon DSL, windows 10 & very slow speed. We were advised to remove “cookies “ to increase speed by making more room. Do you advise this? If so, how do we do this? Thank you, Pat Dear Pat, Cookies are very small files that are left on your computer after visiting a website. They store information about your visit to that site so that the next time you visit you don’t have to enter as much information. Some cookies remember what you looked at while on the site so that you can pick up where you left off. Removing cookies to increase your internet speed is not really true. The only exception would be if your hard drive was so full that Windows didn’t have room to function well. In today’s

world of huge hard drives and lots of storage space, I have yet to see a computer running Windows 10 with that type of problem. If your computer is slow because the hard drive is running out of room, removing cookies (which are very small files) would probably not make much of a difference, and you would need to remove them every time you used the internet. You can remove cookies in Windows 10 with the following directions: 1. Open your web browser (Since you are using Windows 10, I am going to assume you are using the Edge browser) .2. Click on the, “More button in the upper-right corner of the window. It has a row of 3 dots on the icon. 3. Click on “Settings in the drop down menu. 4. Find the setting that says, “Clear browsing data and click the “Choose what to clear button below. 5. Select the

items you want to clear, then click the “Clear button. If you want, you can turn on the option that says, “Always clear this when I close the browser That way, you don’t have to remember to go in and manually clear the cookies. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a question regarding email. I move the emails that I want to keep in folders I have created and have been doing it for years with no problems. I just went on vacation and shut down my computer before I left. No one had access to my computer while I was away. Upon my return, I tried to move an email I had received to a folder and realized that some of my folders were missing. I had been keeping folders for my medical information, etc. I contacted Microsoft live mail and Earthlink. They both took over my computer and could not find any of the folders. They each said it was the other’s problem. How could I lose all those emails while my computer was not even on and is there a way to retrieve them? Thanks, Loraine Dear Loraine, It sounds like you are using Windows Live Mail for your email, and I know from experience that it is fairly common for Windows Live Mail (WLM) folders to become corrupt. I also have quite a bit of experience in

retrieving messages from corrupted folders. Your messages should still be salvageable if you are using POP email access, and if the people who took control of your computer didn’t do anything to the actual mail storage files. However, it is not a quick or easy thing to do, and often I have to try more than one method before I am successful. I can’t give you step by step instructions, instead, I suggest you take it to a local computer repair shop, and call first to make sure this is something they have experience with. If you live in the area, I would be more than happy to help you retrieve your lost messages. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I discovered too late my laptop, HP Pavillion, was not charging the battery. Now it won’t turn on and stay on. Lights indicate on but then immediately go out. Where do I go from here as the battery is only a little over 6 months old. I usually use it plugged in rather than battery power. Thanks, Ellyn Dear Ellyn, A fairly common problem with laptops is that the connection where you plug in the power cord becomes damaged, but before we jump to conclusions lets look and make sure there isn’t something simple going on. First, check the power to the laptop.

Make sure it is plugged into a working outlet, check the cords for wear or damage, and try a different outlet. Next, take the battery out of your laptop, plug in the cord and see if the computer will start without the battery. Most laptops will run fine with the battery removed as long as you have it plugged in. If the laptop still won’t start up, there is probably damage at the connection. If your computer is still under warranty, contact the company, if not, you will need to find a computer shop that does that kind of repair. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there a way to access the old control panel in Windows 10? That would make my computer easier to use now that I have upgraded to 10. Thanks so much, June Dear June, There is an easy way to access, not only the control panel, but also some of the other powerful tools included in the operating system. Actually, there are two very easy ways. Method #1 is to right-click on the start button (which in Windows 10 is the white flag). You will find not only the control panel in the context menu, but also device manager, disk management, and a command prompt to name a few. Method #2 is to use the keyboard combination, Windows logo key (the one with the flag on it in the bottom row) and the letter X. This will bring up the same menu that right-clicking on the start button brings. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. ~ News ~ $10 Million in Bonus Buy Approved for Wild Blueberries STATEWIDE The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved up to $10 million to purchase Maine wild blueberries after the Delegation requested the Department take action earlier this year. Bonus buys help protect American farmers from unexpected market conditions by purchasing surplus goods and distributing them to food banks and other charitable institutions. “Maine’s wild blueberry industry has been an important part of Maine’s economy and culture for centuries. In

recent years, however, the wild blueberry industry has faced increasing challenges from global oversupply of cultivated berries and steeply declining prices,” said Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Bruce Poliquin in a joint statement. "Earlier this year, we urged the USDA to provide relief to Maine growers through a bonus buy of surplus frozen wild blueberries, and we are pleased that the Department has agreed to take action. This investment to alleviate the supply issue, combined

with the industry’s efforts to boost demand, will help create new opportunities for wild blueberry growers and support a bright future for this unique Maine crop.” The price of frozen wild blueberries has dropped below the cost of production by as much as 60 percent in the last five years, creating an unsustainable situation for Maine growers. In February 2017, the Maine Delegation wrote to Erin Morris, the USDA’s Acting Deputy AdminSee BERRIES page 35...

~ Classifieds & News ~ Caring for Waban Together SANFORD Over 150 volunteers gathered in early June to give their time and energy to some spring landscaping and special projects at Waban. Thanks to the United Way, individuals had an opportunity to get involved and make a hands-on difference at several Waban locations on the 22nd United Way Day of Caring. The yards at many residences were given a spruce up with new plantings and mulch by volunteers from the Baker Company, Sanford Alternative Education, Unum and Jagger Brothers. One of the homes was painted by a crew from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Tim Hagelin, Chief Operating Officer at Waban. At Waban’s Main Campus off Route 4 in Sanford, more crews were hard at work landscaping at several buildings and installing a Memorial Garden beside the patio at the Wormwood Center, Waban’s Banquet and Conference facility. Volunteers from Pratt & Whitney did some demo and rebuilding of one of the camp buildings, removing a wall, renovating and adding a deck. Bonnie Leslie, Volunteer Coordinator for Waban, said ...STAGE from page 16 years past – just as stars such as Sally Struthers, Charles Shaughnessy, and Stefanie Powers still do today! The live tour highlights the history of the theatre, including how it survived the Great Depression, thrived after WWII (when hundreds of summer theatres closed permanently), and how it became America’s Foremost Summer Theatre. Tours are scheduled on the following dates: Fridays, July 28, August 25, and September 8, 15 and 29; Sundays, June 11 and 25, August 6, and September 10 and 24; and Mondays, June 5 and 19, July 10 and 24, August 21, and September 18 and 24. NORTH BERWICK Noble High School has been named one of nine grantees in the Barr Foundation Education Program’s Engage New England: Doing High School Differently Initiative. They join the first cohort of education innovators participating in a multi-year initiative to connect all students to success in high school and beyond by assuring they have access to high-quality high schools that meet their interests and empower them to reach their full potential. Noble received a planning grant of $150,000 over one year to develop its Multiple Pathways model for serving students who have been underserved by current educational approaches. The Barr Foundation’s Engage New England: Doing High School Differently Initiative is a $30 million investment over five years to help New England innovators improve existing high schools and bring new school models to life in their communities. Participants receive One-year planning grants to support technical assistance with planning and capacity building, with the potential to be invited to apply for implementation grants of up to $750,000 over two years. Participants also become partners in a learning community, to share and learn from like-minded innovators across the region. To-

gether, they are doing high school differently by building a diverse set of school models that expand student success. “We’re thrilled that the Barr Foundation is supporting the critical work we’re doing on behalf of students in North Berwick, Berwick, and Lebanon and connecting us to peers engaged in similar efforts. We are very excited to have the resources available to us that will allow us to expand our Multiple Pathways Program that currently has a long waiting list of students who want to enroll. said Principal Joseph Findlay. “Ensuring that all of our young people are able to connect to success during and after high school creates real progress for New England. Intentionally designed around the principles of positive youth development theory, schools supported under this initiative will be as rigorous as they are flexible in developing content knowledge, successful habits, creative know- how and navigation abilities - the integrated knowledge and skills that are essential for today’s students to connect to success in high school, college, career and community.

Anya Chase Named Student-Athlete of the Month WELLS Wells High School junior Anya Chase has been honored with the distinction of StudentAthlete of the Month for May of 2017. Her selection was based on her academics, sportsmanship and role as starting pitcher and hitter on the WHS Girls Softball team. This makes the second time for Chase receiving Student-Athlete of the Month. The first was awarded to her for similar softball accomplishments for April of 2016. “It’s awesome, said Chase about this honor. “It’s really nice being recognized by my community. It’s a team sport but individual recognition feels good. Presenting a plaque to Chase on June 8 was softball coach Kevin Fox and Pam Moody-Maxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate which, along with Cole Harrison Insurance Agency, is a sponsor of StudentAthlete of the Month at WHS. “I think it is well deserved, said Fox of Chase’s award. “Anya is an outstanding softball player and teammate on this team. Fox went on to add, “She has done a

fantastic job on the mound. She has got us out of some sticky situations and dominated a lot of teams. Offensively, she leads off for us and is hitting over .500 which is amazing. She’s definitely a big part of us scoring runs and keeping the other team from scoring runs. “Anya Chase is an amazing pitcher but also a fabulous hitter making her a force on the field, commented Moody-Maxon who once pitched for WHS. “She has been dedicated to softball both during the season and in the off season, working with pitching

coaches‌â€? “Not only can she pitch but she can run and she can hit.â€? said Chase family friend Ernest Tarling who once unofficially coached Chase before she entered high school. Tarling said that Anya’s father Matt built a batting cage for her inside the family barn with chain link fencing on the windows. This allowed Chase and several of her friends to keep practicing their pitching and hitting skills during the winter months. Tarling observed that Chase had a certain drive to be a good pitcher.

York Public Library “Allied Film Sunday, July 23, 7 p.m. This film tells the story of Royal Canadian Air Force paratrooper and intelligence officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. After the success of this suicide mission, Max and Marianne flee

together to England. Rated R for violence, some sexuality/nudity, language and brief drug use. 124 minutes.

“Rules Don't Apply Film Sunday, July 30, 7 p.m. (2016). An aspiring young actress, Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins), and her ambitious young driver, Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich), struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the unpredictable billionaire Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty) for whom they work. Hughes' behavior intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways. Rated PG-13 for sexual material including brief strong language, thematic elements, and drug references. 127 minutes.
