Upcoming Family Fun in York YORK The Town of York Parks & Recreation welcome all to the 2020 Summer Lighting of the Nubble to feel the magic of Christmas during the summer. However, due to the pandemic, this year’s celebration will not have live entertainment or a visit from Santa. However, residents and visitors alike can enjoy seeing the Nubble Light all decked out in holiday lights every evening following sunset from July 31 through August 9. On Saturday, August 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a York Days Sidewalk Celebration on the new, unopened Short Sands Road, which is off Ridge Road. This event will have hopscotch, a hoola hoop contest, a
giant connect 4 game, cornhole, a sidewalk chalk contest and more! There will also be food for purchase in the Union Bluff’s lot directly next to Short Sands Road. Please note that all activity stations will be staffed and sani-
tized after each use and that activities will have ample spacing, plus hand sanitizing stations spread throughout the event space. Only 50 people will be allowed in at one time, but spacing will be designed for many more.

To that end, the Governor announced that the Maine Department of Education, in close partnership with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), has updated its “Framework for Returning to Classroom Instruction” to include health and safety precautions that all schools must follow if they decide to return to in-classroom instruction to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. The Governor also announced that these science-based protocols, which follow national best practices and include the use of face coverings and physical distancing, will be financially supported by up to $165 million in Federal CARES Act funding that she has authorized to be distributed to school systems across Maine. Further, Governor Mills also announced that her Administration will provide school superintendents and school boards with public health guidance in the form of a three-tiered health advisory system to assist them in making decisions about whether and how to bring students back

This new tiered system, developed by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Maine CDC, will take into account public health metrics on a county by county basis and translate them into three, regularly updated color-based categorizations. These developments come after an announcement by the Mills Administration that the Governor is providing $8.4 million in additional CARES Act funding to childcare providers to offset the higher cost of caring for children due to COVID-19. “Like many parents and teachers, I am concerned about the children who are being

left behind and the inequities that have been exacerbated by this pandemic. For the sake of Maine children, their futures, and the livelihoods of Maine families, returning to classroom instruction when it is safe to do so must be our shared goal,” said Governor Mills. “But that goal cannot be achieved at the expense of peoples’ health and safety, regardless of what the Trump Administration says. I want students, parents, teachers, and school staff to feel safe and confident in returning to school. That is why my Administration will provide public health
guidance and financial support to assist local officials as they determine what is best for their communities, their students, and their staff. The actions we are taking today are a step in that direction.” Recognizing that school systems face unprecedented, unbudgeted costs that are too great for communities to bear alone, Governor Mills has authorized $165 million in Federal CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) monies to be distributed to SAUs across Maine. ~ News ~ ...COLLEGE from page 2 ering and completing education and training our students desperately need in this economy, while upholding our commitment to protecting the health and safety of our students, employees, and the broader community,” said Maine Community College System (MCCS) President David Daigler. “Our plans need to account for the fact that roughly 95 percent of our students commute between campus and their communities, many with jobs and families. We have taken prudent steps to minimize the threat of transmission of this highly communicable virus while affirming our commitment to delivering the skills our students need to compete in today’s economy,” Daigler said. The colleges have also invested in building an enhanced online learning environment using Brightspace, a new learning
management platform. Faculty are getting the time, support, and encouragement they need to use Brightspace to maximize innovation in delivering effective online teaching. Some face-to-face classes on campus will also include remote learning components, for lectures and other instruction that does not require face-to-face interactions. The colleges are also adopting an app-based screening protocol that will be used systemwide. Testing protocols are still being developed, in consultation with state health officials. The colleges’ academic calendars will not change, including observing normal holidays. New campus rules will require everyone to follow commonsense safety protocols, such as wearing face coverings as directed and maintaining a safe physical distance from others. Additional information can be found at www.mccs.me.edu.

weighted formula that the Maine Department of Education has developed in collaboration with School Superintendents from across Maine. The Maine Department of Education has identified $328 million in need to help school systems across Maine. The Mills Administration views the funding dedicated

Open for Curbside Pick-up & Deliveries KITTERY The Marcia Abigail Ryder Art Scholarship Fund at the Kittery Art Association (KAA) awarded two $1,000 scholarships to outstanding 2020 Traip Academy graduates: Jayna Wheeler and Elias Matso. Jayna is pursuing “visual storytelling” through theater and puppets and directed plays and musicals at Traip Academy. She has also worked with the Seacoast Repertory Theater. In the fall, Jayna will attend York County Community College for Small Business Management. Elias has been accepted at the Parsons School of Design in NYC, which he says, has been a personal goal for him since he was 13 years old. Elias has
participated in internships and course training at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and with the Tiffany and Company Design Team. Since 2008, the Ryder Scholarship Fund has granted over $30,000 to assist Kittery students in pursuing creative interests. The Fund is made possible by the art association and by generous private donors. Tax deductible donations to the Ryder Scholarship Fund ensure that KAA will continue to provide opportunities for Kittery’s students to explore their creativity. Kittery Firefighters to Receive Federal Grant KITTERY The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced $6.4 million in direct assistance grants to 226 fire departments nationwide through the agency’s FY2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant COVID-19 Supplemental program (AFGS). Additional phases will soon be announced. The AFG-S Program includes a grant to the Kittery Fire Department for $7,142. The Fiscal Year 2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program – COVID-19 Supplemental (AFG-S) is a supplemental funding opportunity under
the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). AFG is one of three FEMA grant programs that focus on enhancing the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards. The AFG-S Program accomplishes this by providing financial assistance directly to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations, and State Fire Training Academies for critical Personal Protective Equipment and supplies needed to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the COVID-19 public health emergency. The
AFG-S Program represents part of a comprehensive set of measures authorized by Congress and implemented by the Department of Homeland Security. FEMA obligates funding for this project directly to the recipient agencies. It is the recipient agency’s responsibility to manage their grant award within federal guidelines with technical assistance and monitoring provided by FEMA Fire Program Specialists. Additional information may be found at www.fema. gov/firegrants.
Agency on Aging Delivers to Seniors Impacted by COVID-19 YORK COUNTY Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) has expanded its nutrition program to meet changing demands and deliver more meals to older adults impacted by COVID-19 in York and Cumberland Counties. SMAA offers a range of meals programs, including Meals on Wheels. “SMAA has been dedicated to supporting adults age 60 and older since 1973, and we have never had to cope with a crisis quite like the current COVID-19 pandemic,” said Renee Longa-
rini, SMAA nutrition program manager. “Staff have worked quickly to identify the most critical needs of the population we serve and found that meal delivery needs have increased substantially.” Prior to the pandemic, SMAA was providing meals to approximately 750-800 clients daily through Meals on Wheels. They are now delivering to more than 1,100 clients and sending out 5000 to 6000 meals, doubling their operational capacity. As a funder, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation recognized early the impact COVID-19 would have on food access for older adults and encouraged SMAA to shift dollars previously earmarked for other
programs. “Now more than ever, it is incredibly important for older adults and others at risk to stay safely at home,” said Karen Voci, president of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation. “This initiative helps support social distancing, takes care of those most at-risk for complications from COVID-19, and provides nutritious meals for those who need it most.” To be eligible for the program, adults must be at least 60 years old or qualified as adults with disability and are determined to be homebound and unable to prepare meals on their own. Health & Fitness More Than $3M for Low-Income Free Immunizations WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been awarded a total of $3,023,728 to help provide free immunizations to eligible low-income children throughout Maine. This funding was awarded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Immunization and Vaccines for Chil-
dren Program (VFC). “Vaccines are essential for protecting children from a variety of serious infections and diseases, and they are a vital tool for maintaining public health,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “We welcome this investment, which will help to ensure that all children throughout Maine have access to these important immunizations.” The VFC program is a
federally funded program that provides vaccines at no cost to
children from low-income families. The program protects individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases through provision of federal
funds and contracts to purchase and distribute vaccines, vaccine preventable disease surveillance, provider and public education, and evaluation.
...AGING from page 8 “Before COVID-19, we were delivering five meals daily on average Monday through Friday to each client and now some clients are requesting seven, 14, or 21 meals a week,” added Longarini. “Many of our clients used to have family or friends to help run errands, visit or bring meals, but to avoid the spread of the virus, those people are keeping contact to a minimum.” In order to meet the growing demand, Longarini worked with the SMAA volunteer services team to build an emergency volunteer response unit ready to go on a moment’s notice if needed. The response was overwhelming with 280 individuals stepping up. “Volunteers came from community organizations reaching out to us,” said Longarini. “Sheriff’s departments, fire fighters, community centers --all asking what can we do to help you. And as soon as I mentioned the emergency volunteer response team, they said ‘what do we need to do to get on it?’ It was amazing to see the turn out from the community.” “Working in nutrition we’re always aware of the need to provide nutritional support to older and vulnerable people but the current COVID-19 crisis heightened the public’s awareness of nutritional needs of seniors and handicapped individuals,” explained Longarini. “We now realize that we have to be prepared to continue to provide nutritional services in the face of unforeseen chal-
lenges.” Expanding the SMAA nutritional programs is made possible in part by a grant from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, which has been flexible during the COVID-19 lock down, allowing funds it provides to shift to alternative programs that promote healthy aging.

BUSINESS & FINANCE $450,000 to Expand Apprenticeship Programs care, mental health care, addiction treatment, and alternative pain management occupations. “As our nation prepares to recover and rebuild from the unprecedented levels of joblessness caused by the coronavirus pandemic, registered apprenticeship programs will give employees a leg up to enter a new industry. Given additional education and resources, workers will actually earn more over their lifetime if they participate in an apprenticeship program,” said Pingree. “This funding from the Department of Labor will help bolster Maine’s local economies and
WASHINGTON, DC Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME), and U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the Maine Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) has received a total of $450,000 from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration (ETA). The competitive funding was awarded to Maine to serve, improve, and expand the RAP model by broadening registered apprenticeships to include health

gain in-demand skills and obtain good-paying jobs.” In 2019, the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Senator Collins sponsored a provision that further expanded the U.S. Department of Defense’s Skillbridge Program by allowing the inclusion of federal agencies as program participants. In the same year, Senators Collins and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) introduced the American Apprenticeship Act, legislation aimed at providing funding for tuition
assistance programs for participants in preapprenticeship and apprenticeship program. The Employment and Training Administration (ETA) administers federal job training and dislocated worker programs, federal grants to states for public employment service programs, and unemployment insurance benefits. These services are provided primarily through state and local workforce development systems.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

SOUTH BERWICK – Mary Lou Turcotte of South Berwick, died Friday, July 17, 2020 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. She was born September 17, 1940 in South Berwick, daughter of Ashton and Bernadette (Roberge) Garvin. She was a lifelong resident of South Berwick, graduating from Berwick Academy and McIntosh College. Upon retirement from 17 years at UNH working in the Spanish and Portuguese department, she followed her kids and grandkids across state and country lines to support them in their activities. Mary Lou was the happiest when she was with her family. She loved being with her family so much that she refused to become a “snowbird” because it meant she would miss a game, a concert or anything her grandkids were doing. She loved her summers on Moody Beach, watching her children and grandchildren play on the beach. She was always up for a game on the porch with the kids, boogie boarding or going for walks. She and her husband had many adventures in their 57 years together. Their marriage was a true lifelong partnership
and they built a beautiful life together. Of all the teams they watched, the two of them were the best team. Members of her family include her husband Edmond Turcotte of South Berwick; three children, Tanya Geier and husband Chris of Stratham, NH, Marc Turcotte and wife Jen of South Berwick, and Taryn Elwell and husband Brent of Eliot; nine grandchildren; brother Gary Garvin and wife Phyllis of Dover, NH; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and sister Adele. Visiting hours were held Wednesday, July 22 at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main Street, South Berwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, July 23 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, 162 Agamenticus Road, South Berwick. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Rollinsford, NH. Memorials in her name may be made to Special Olympics Maine, ATTN: Phil, 125 John Roberts Road #5, South Portland, ME 04106. Please go to www.mcintiremccooey.com to sign the guest book.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I discovered too late my laptop, HP Pavillion, was not charging the battery. Now it won’t turn on and stay on. Lights indicate on but then immediately go out. Where do I go from here as the battery is only a little over 6 months old. I usually use it plugged in rather than battery power. Thanks, Ellyn Dear Ellyn, A fairly common problem with laptops is that the connection where you plug in the power cord becomes damaged, but before we jump to conclusions lets look and make sure there isn’t something simple going on. First, check the power to the laptop. Make sure it is plugged into a working outlet, check the cords for wear or damage, and try a different outlet. Next, take the battery out of your laptop, plug in the cord and see if the computer will start without the battery. Most laptops will run fine with the battery removed as long as you have it plugged in. If the laptop still won’t start up, there is probably damage at the connection. If your computer is still under warranty, contact the company, if not, you will need to find a computer shop that does that kind of repair. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,
We have Verizon DSL, windows 10 & very slow speed. We were advised to remove “cookies “ to increase speed by making more room. Do you advise this? If so, how do we do this? Thank you, Pat Dear Pat, Cookies are very small files that are left on your computer after visiting a website. They store information about your visit to that site so that the next time you visit you don’t have to enter as much information. Some cookies remember what you looked at while on the site so that you can pick up where you left off. Removing cookies to increase your internet speed is not really true. The only exception would be if your hard drive was so full that Windows didn’t have room to function well. In today’s world of huge hard drives and lots of storage space, I have yet to see a computer running Windows 10 with that type of problem. If your computer is slow because the hard drive is running out of room, removing cookies (which are very small files) would probably not make much of a difference, and you would need to remove them every time you used the internet. You can remove cookies in Windows 10 with the following directions:
1. Open your web browser (Since you are using Windows 10, I am going to assume you are using the Edge browser). 2. Click on the, “More” button in the upper-right corner of the window. It has a row of 3 dots on the icon. 3. Click on “Settings” in the drop down menu. 4. Find the setting that says, “Clear browsing data” and click the “Choose what to clear” button below. 5. Select the items you want to clear, then click the “Clear” button. If you want, you can turn on the option that says, “Always clear this when I close the browser” That way, you don’t have to remember to go in and manually clear the cookies. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Can you please tell me how to take a screen shot on Facebook? Thank you so much, Joanne Dear Joanne, I am going to have to make a few guesses here as to what you are actually trying to do. Guess number 1 is that you are using a Windows computer to view Facebook. Guess number 2 is that you want to take a screen shot of something on your computer and then upload it to Facebook.
Guess number 3 is that maybe you want to take a screenshot of something on Facebook and save it on your computer. Lets start with how to take a screenshot on your Windows computer. Simply press the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard. That’s it. The problem is that your screenshot is stored in the Windows Clipboard and you can’t see it. What you need to do, is paste it from the clipboard into a program. Every Windows computer has an image program called, Paint. It is located in your start menu under the “Accessories” folder. A quick and easy way to open the “Paint” program is to tap the windows logo key on your keyboard and then type the word, “Paint”. Click on the Paint program, and you will be ready for the next step. Once you have your screenshot on the clipboard, and the Paint program open, all you have to do is click on “Edit” and “Paste” to paste your screenshot into Paint. Now, save your image and you will be able to upload it to Facebook just like any other image on your computer. This will work equally as well if you are trying to take a screenshot of something on Facebook and save it on your computer. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady, I have two Facebook pages. Can’t seem to merge them, and afraid if I get rid of the one without a photo, I will lose both pages. Is there an answer to this? Colleen
Dear Colleen, I don’t believe there is any way to merge Facebook accounts, but you can backup the information in both before making any changes. Simply go to your Facebook Settings, (click the small drop down arrow in to blue bar at the top of your page, and click “Settings”). On the “General Account Settings” page, there is a link that says, “Download a copy of your Facebook Data”. Click on that link to start the process. If you download the data for each account first, then you will be able to delete one of them without losing the data. If you are talking about two pages that are in one account, you can actually merge them using the directions on facebook at: https://www.facebook. com/help/249601088403018.
