Experience the Bounty of Local Farms OGUNQUIT Local farmers are contributing to a returning seacoast event, a Farm-to-Chef Celebration, hosted by Great Works Regional Land Trust, on Sunday, Aug. 3 at the land trust’s Beach Plum Farm in Ogunquit. Once again this year, award-winning Chef Evan Hennessey will create a beautiful tasting menu straight from our local farms. A dozen local farms are donating products - with such familiar favorites as corn, potatoes, goat cheese and beets with some not so familiar like bison, pork bellies and beef liver. A few of the items are being purchased. Many farmers are coming to converse with guests

the land trust has helped to conserve almost 5,300 acres of land, including 2,000 acres of farm lands. The organization is working hard to conserve even more. Some of the protected farmland, such as the Beach Plum Farm preserve with 60 vibrant community gardens, is owned by Great Works. Most of the other farmlands are protected by conservation easements, which stipulate they will remain available as farmland and open space forever. Often farmers donate a generous percentage of the easement value; and Great Works raises the rest from grants and donations by
towns, individuals and businesses. For example, just this April, voters in the town of North Berwick approved $20,000 to help Great Works with the upcoming conservation of two farms. The farm owners involved are donating substantially through bargain sales. “With our history of conserving farmlands, Great Works is pleased to welcome local farmers to this important fundraiser. Along with the many other contributors, they help us to celebrate local farms and foods,” said Pat Robinson, chair of the Great Works Development Committee and a Board member. See BOUNTY page 7...
