Norah Donnell, Our Local 11-Year Old Lobster Woman WELLS A large painting depicting 11-year-old Wells resident, Norah Donnell, carrying one of her lobster traps is part of the exhibition “Lobstering Women of Maine” now on display at the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport. The exhibit runs through October 20, and features paintings of seven Maine lobster women by artist Susan Tobey White. The daughter of Stacey and Zach Donnell, Norah is by far the youngest of the women

selected for White’s artistic project. Norah uses her student lobstering license to fish 10 traps in the summer months out of Wells Harbor. Her boat “Old Memories” is named in remembrance of her late grandfather, who left her the boat in 2012. Norah carries on a family tradition of lobstering. Norah’s grandfather lobstered part-time out of York Harbor. Her father is a commercial lobsterman out of Perkins Cove, Ogunquit. A young entrepreneur,

Norah runs a businesss called “The Lobster Peddlar,” whose name was inspired by her favorite children’s book, “Caps for Sale.” “There are two generations lobstering before me and I love that I am able to continue this” Nora explains. “Many people are surprised when they hear I have my own lobster license, boat, and business. I am excited to share about my job as a lobster woman with my dad See DONNELL page 2...

July 28 Open Farm Day Across Maine STATEWIDE Join the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry on Sunday, July 28 at farms across Maine during one of the state’s most exciting agriculture-related events of the year: Open Farm Day. This is your chance to meet our state’s farmers and tell them how much they mean to all of us. July 28, marks the 30th annual Open Farm Day and more farms than ever before are opening their doors to you, their customers. Open Farm Day presents a wonderful chance for learning – much of which is hands on – about the opportunities and challenges present in agriculture today and the innovative ideas that our farmers are

implementing as they produce the food, fiber, and other agricultural products that we benefit from in so many ways. Governor Janet Mills wrote, “Maine farms and the farmers who run them are a cor-

After 21 Years, Wells’ Bottle with Note Inside Found in Scotland WELLS In 1998, 13-year old Matt Rhoades was vacationing in Wells with his family. For fun, he wrote a note, sealed it inside a plastic bottle and tossed it into the Atlantic Ocean at Moody Beach. Then despite time, tides and the elements, the bottle traveled 2,833 miles and was recently found by a family vacationing in Scotland with the note still inside and intact. Thanks to today’s social media, the finders were able to track down the sender who had included his address in the note. After posting photos of the note, the now 34-year old Rhoades confirmed the note was indeed his and the address listed was that of his former home in Salem, MA. Matt Rhoades’ parents currently reside in Wells. ...DONNELL from page 1

A family donation of $20 will include a one year membership to the PMC that includes our newsletter delivered electronically. Other vessels to see this year is the 170-foot Mystic and “America’s Privateer, Lynx. Mystic, a three-masted, gaff-rigged, square-topsail schooner requires a crew of 14 to manage her 13 sails, but with her 34-foot beam there’s plenty of room aboard. She has 17 cabins and her main salon seats 38 for dining. Her main mast is 110 feet tall! Mystic’s public tours will also include a special tour inside the vessel where visitors can see where the crew lives. Two of her deck houses, including the main salon with its teak trim, and its

forward navigation house, open to the public. The beautiful 122-foot, two-masted topsail schooner Lynx returns to Portsmouth after several years. She is a replica of an early privateer from the War of 1812. With her sharply raked masts, and a lowslung design, she was built for speed, so as to avoid the British ships blockading our ports, but her 6-pound cannons made her more than a match for the British merchant shipping on which she preyed. Lynx considers Portsmouth her homeport and see will be arriving will be arriving Wednesday July 30 prior to the beginning of Sail Portsmouth. She will initially be docked in New Castle, and will be offering two-hour ocean sails to the public Wednesday through Friday. Viewing points all along the river in Maine and New Hampshire plus the Memorial bridge sidewalk. ~ News ~ State Ballad of Maine Established AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills recently signed LD 1541, “An Act To Establish ‘Ballad of the 20th Maine’ as the Official State Ballad” sponsored by Representative Scott Cuddy of Winterport. During the signing ceremony in the Hall of Flags, Governor Mills was joined by the creator of the Ballad, the band The Ghost of Paul Revere, who also performed it after the bill signing. “Music transcends the bounds of time, distance, language, and culture to bring people together,” said Governor Mills. “The ‘Ballad of the 20th Maine’ does just that by reminding us of our proud heritage, the role our great state has played in the history of our nation, and to be forever grateful to those who served and saved our country.” “Making The Ghost of Paul Revere’s ‘The Ballad of the 20th Maine’ our official State Ballad honors the courage of Mainers who fought in the Civil War, the tenacity of our people and adds to the catalog of art that represents us as a state,” said Rep. Scott Cuddy, D-Winterport. It also promotes the wealth of artistic talent we have here in Maine. I thank Governor Mills for signing this bill into law and elevating the work of Maine musicians like the members of The Ghost of Paul Revere.” While Maine has a State Song: “The State of Maine Song”, by Roger Vinton Snow adopted in 1931, as well as

a State March, “The Dirigo March” by Leo Pepin adopted in 2012, “The Ballad of the 20th Maine” is Maine’s first State Ballad. Through the eyes of soldier and son of Litchfield, Andrew Tozier, the ballad follows the men of the 2nd Maine Infantry Regiment as they joined the 20th Maine and fought valiantly at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. The lyrics to “The Ballad of the 20th Maine” can be found online.

this population from enjoying the live theater experience. Three years ago, Donato Tramuto published his first book, “Life’s Bulldozer Moments: How Adversity Can Lead to Success in Life and Business.” Now in its 7th printing, the book recounts several tragedies and hardships that Tramuto has endured, while illustrating how he overcame what he describes as ‘life’s bulldozer moments’ to become a compassionate corporate leader and philanthropist. “Through our Life’s Bulldozer Moments Award, the Foundation seeks to honor the incredible work of the Ogunquit Playhouse, a revered New England art institution that helps create joy and spark passion in people of all ages and backgrounds,” Tramuto said. “The playhouse’s ongoing work to make the world more vibrant and accessible to all individuals aligns perfectly with the mission of the Foundation.” “The theater is an experience like no other,” said Bradford Kenney, Executive Artistic Director for the Playhouse. “Live performances have the ability to move people in ways that create deeper connections to themselves, to their community and to the world around them. We are so grateful to the Tramuto Foundation for this incredible

partnership and are excited our work will help transform the way people of all abilities experience the magic of live theater.” The first project to be undertaken by the Tramuto Foundation and Ogunquit Playhouse Human Rights Partnership is closely aligned with Tramuto’s national initiative “Workplace Dignity and Inclusion,” which focuses on combatting social isolation, particularly among aging adults, who, because of physical disabilities or cultural circumstances, are normally unable to attend theater performances. Studies have shown that social isolation is a growing epidemic and carries with it health risks equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. The playhouse has partnered with the Wells Ogunquit Senior Center at Moody, the Institute for Integrative Aging at St. Joseph’s College and playhouse volunteers to offer 100 people in need deeply discounted tickets to an August 22 matinee of ‘Murder on the Orient Express.’ In addition to the show, the playhouse will transport individuals to the venue, where they will be treated to a free buffet lunch and will take part in roundtable discussions with actors and staff about the show. Artist Annie Stone to be Featured at Clay Hill Farm

OGUNQUIT To honor Ogunquit’s long-standing history as an artists’ colony and showcase the local artists in the community today, Clay Hill Farm, together with TaleSpinStudio in Ogunquit, launched the #VerandART Project in the spring of 2018. The artist outreach program features a new local artist in the Veranda Room at Clay Hill Farm every 6 - 8 weeks with their collection hung for the public to view and enjoy. The next featured artist is Annie Stone and her “Landscapes, Seascapes & Light” collection will be displayed in the Veranda Room at Clay Hill Farm through August 28.

A life-long student of art and the process, Annie Stone studied art history and graphic design- graduating with a BA in art education. While teaching art, she studied watercolor and the process and got hooked on the control of the medium. But it was during her time on Monhegan island with a small group of artists, that everything changed. Stone began a love affair with impressionist land/seascape oil painting on the inspirational Maine island- a love she still nurtures today. Mostly self-taught and under the guidance of the artists on the island, “I look for that moment when the light is just right and the mood I feel about a particular place is ex-

pressed.” Stone still teaches privately and spends as much time painting as possible. “My goal is to always paint, always learn and always say YES to now.” The public is invited to a meet and greet reception with Annie Stone on Monday, July 29 with complimentary hors d’oeuvres from 5 - 7 p.m. Clay Hill Farm is located at 220 Clay Hill Road in Cape Neddick. Eleven children from 7 to 12 years old were more than half way through summer camp, which will culminate with their final productions August 2-3 on the main stage of the summer stock theater. “Things are going really well. This is week three of five and they already know the whole show,” said Christopher Gempp, director of the camp. “They are always asking to learn more.” Gempp chose the Disney version of Jungle Book in part because of the “ensemble nature of the show.” “For this show they are on stage the whole time and that’s hard for kids,” said Gempp, who teaches technology and theater at Timberlane Regional Middle School in Plaistow, NH. Kids agreed this can be a challenge, but they are getting helpful guidance and learning new skills. For instance, when they are on stage and not in the action, they should still focus on the action. Emilyrose Reardon of Rollinsford, NH, camp choreographer for the first time this year, has brought new moves and dances, a bonus for returning campers. “I like that we have a new choreographer because we do different stuff with a different choreographer,” said Delaney Baldwin, 10, of North Berwick, a returning camper who plays Mowgli, the man cub. The hardest part of the show for Corey Gusman in playing the part of Baloo, the brown bear, is having to be so consistently happy. “He’s always cheerful even in the worst situation, so See JUNGLE page 26...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Raw ‘Cabaret’ a Cautionary Tale on Stage at Ogunquit Playhouse

By Nancye Tuttle , Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Evil lurks beneath the frivolous façade of sex, booze and non-stop partying in Kander and Ebb’s startling musical Cabaret, on-stage at the Ogunquit Playhouse through August 10. It’s not a show for those who enjoy light summer entertainment that’s frothy and fun — like the Playhouse’s recent 42nd Street. Raw, even raunchy at times, Cabaret is still worth seeing for its cautionary lesson, a warning that history can repeat itself — especially in today’s divisive America. The message simmers innocently beneath the surface in Act I and erupts full-force to a shocking finale in Act II. Set in decadent, pre-World War II Berlin in the seedy Kit Kat Club, Cabaret tells the story of Sally Bowles, a British cabaret chanteuse and Cliff

Bradshaw, a fresh-faced American writer. He comes to Berlin to work on his novel, then falls for Sally and is seduced by the sordid charms of the saucy girl, sensuous club and corrupt city that “teeters on the brink of an abyss,’’ according to show director BT McNicholl in his notes. An appealing older couple — Fraulein Schneider, Cliff’s landlady, and Herr Schultz, her elderly Jewish suitor — are crucial to the plot. So, too, is Ernst Ludwig, a German who befriends Cliff and ends up wearing a Nazi swastika arm band. There are Kit Kat Girls and Boys, who sordidly sashay across the stage in skimpy attire and play instruments as part of the talented, on-stage Kit Kat Band. But Cabaret’s real star is the Emcee, brilliantly acted by Randy Harrison, reprising his bawdy performance from a recent national tour. Sexy,

brazen and outlandish, his seductive Emcee is the show’s host, narrator and constant participant in the on-stage debauchery. Harrison’s star-power often overshadows the other players. But Kate Shindle is a sterling Sally, especially with her soaring rendition of the title tune in Act II. Billy Harrigan Tighe is an amiable Cliff, naively enthralled, at first, with Berlin’s swinging nightlife. But his enjoyment soon turns jaded as he realizes the Third Reich’s unrelenting grip on the people and city he loves. Mariette Hartley and John Rubenstein are marvelous as Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz. The show biz vets share a lovely chemistry in their songs “It Couldn’t Please Me More” and “Married” — two of Cabaret’s rare tender moments. Noah Plomgren’s Ernst Ludwig is menacing beneath his outward friendliness, while the club’s girls and boys add to the decadence. In his direction, McNicholl, a Playhouse favorite (West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Billy Elliot), pays tribute to the Rob Marshall-Sam Mendes re-

vivals that were acclaimed on Broadway and London stages in several incarnations. The striking set and costumes are Broadway originals by Robert Brill and William Ivey Long. Andrea Leigh and Bruce Barnes preside over the evocative choreography and vibrant

music direction. This R-rated Cabaret is not for the prudish or for kids under 17. It’s a disturbing, yet brilliant classic, and a brash wake-up call for all to heed as we ponder America’s current political plight. For tickets and information, visit www.OgunquitPlayhouse.org or call 207-646-5511.

Fundraising for Groups at Hackmatack Playhouse

BERWICK Hundreds of people who buy tickets for a musical or play at Hackmatack Playhouse each summer at the same time help support people with autism, struggling veterans’ organizations, international women’s groups or even a local alumni association. Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick every year offers non-profit groups a chance to sell tickets and keep part of the proceeds for themselves. Spots are still available for groups who want to sign up for either “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time,” which runs Wednesdays to Sundays through July 20, or “Peter and the Starcatcher,” which runs the same days August 14-31. The way it works is a non-profit group can keep from $10 to $15 of each ticket

it sells for a particular showing, depending on whether it is a senior or regular priced tickets. Dozens of non-profit groups have benefited over the years, raising as much as $3,000 from this event, accord-

The American Legion Auxiliary for instance, has sold raffle tickets during intermission and this year held its fundraiser on June 29 for “Always Patsy Cline.” Seven other organizations have booked fundraisers so far for 2019. Among them is the Dover chapter of PEO Sisterhood, an international group that provides educational opportunities to women, whose fundraiser will be Saturday, July 27, and The Kennebunk Kennebunkport Alumni Association, whose fundraiser will be Wednesday, July 31, both for “Mamma Mia.” Besides raising money for a group, the event helps get the word out about the organization. For Guptill, this program feels good all around. “We help groups that are doing great work,” he said, “and the people and organizations that come in get to make money, educate people about what they are doing and at the same time enjoy a wonderful

Starting at 6 p.m., rain or shine, this free classical concert is co-sponsored by Maine Public and Music on Main. Lori Parkinson, organizer of Music on Main, says “We were delighted when Maine

Carson Cooman to Perform at First Congregational Church KENNEBUNKPORT The First Church invites the public to attend the next in a series of free summer concerts to be held in the church at 141 North St., Kennebunkport, on Monday, July 29 at 7 p.m. This concert features American composer and organist Carson Cooman. Carson Cooman, who played a recital in First Congregational Church in August 2016 is a returning favorite of First Congregational Church. After his recital that year, when the church was actively raising money to restore its antique organ, Cooman validated and celebrated that effort by composing “The Kennebunkport Suite. The suite is three hymn arrangements as a gift to the congregation. “The Kennebunkport Suite was written for and is dedicated to Joyce Painter Rice, First Congregational Church, and the church’s 1854 E. & G. G. Hook pipe organ (Opus 177). As a composer, Cooman created a catalog of works in many forms ranging from solo instrumental pieces to operas, and from orchestral works to hymn tunes. His work has been performed on all six inhabited continents and appears on over forty recordings, including more than twenty complete CDs. His

of keeping classical music alive and well. This concert is a coming-out party for Maine Public’s newest classical signal in the state, 102.3, which serves Kennebunk and York County. The Boston Classical Trio consists of Susanna Ogata on violin, Guy Fishman on the cello and Ian Watson on harpsichord. The trio has played across New England and are recognized for exploring the unique textures and dynamics afforded by period instruments. Among the evening’s selections are works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Christian Bach (Bach’s 18th son), Antonio Vivaldi, George Philipp Telemann and Johann Georg Pisendel. Past concerts organized by Music on Main have drawn well over 1,000 people to the Waterhouse Center and its immediate environs. People arrive by trolley and on foot, some with their dogs and many with their children. “It’s going to give our community exposure to Baroque classical music, and we know it will be a summer evening to remember, Parkinson says. WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the University of New England (UNE) has been awarded $749,999 for their Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP). This funding was allocated through the Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). UNE, in collaboration with the University of Maine (UMaine), aims to improve the health and well-being of Maine’s older adults through enhanced practitioner training and the formation of a statewide council, AgingME. “Maine has the highest median age of any state in the nation, which presents unique challenges to the state’s health workforce for meeting the needs of its aging population. In addition, many of Maine’s elderly residents reside in rural areas where there is often a lack of access to primary care, said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This funding will help UNE and UMaine lead efforts in our state to meet the need for a geriatric-capable workforce to improve health outcomes for older adults in Maine and across rural America. HRSA has designated See GERIATRICS page 18...

Health & Fitness Community Gardens are Blooming KENNEBUNK The Town of Kennebunk has two community gardens in town; one located on Park Street at the Avesta Housing property, Park Street School Apartments, and the second located on Holland Road. These gardens have plots that are available to the public to rent, as well as dedicated plots supported by UMaine Cooperative Extension Program Maine

Harvest for Hunger (MHH). These plots are used specifically to grow and donate to the produce pantry each Friday at St. Martha’s Church. For the public, the beds are rented out each summer for a cost dependent on the size of the plot and are tended to by the owner (with scholarships available). Those that have a plot are expected to donate at least 6 hours of their time throughout

the course of the growing season toward the MHH plots. Each week both gardens host a harvest, Thursdays at 4 p.m. at the Holland Road garden and 5:30 p.m. at the Park Street garden. The produce is weighed and prepared to be brought to the pantry the following morning for the pantry-goers who are able to choose their own food options.

Maine Home Values Hold Strong Despite Dip in Sales AUGUSTA Sales of single-family existing homes in Maine eased 7.18% comparing June 2019 to June 2018, according to Maine Listings. Values, however, increased 5.09% over that same time period to a median sales price (MSP) of $239,085. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “After a slow start to 2019, the number of single-family real estate sales bounced upward in April and May, but declined again in June,” says Peter Harrington, 2019 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS and Broker/ Partner with Malone Commercial Brokers in Portland. “For the first six months of 2019, the number of single-family sales transactions is two percent below the comparable time period for 2018. It’s also interesting to note that the for-sale inventory is nearly six-percent below last year’s levels.”

Sales of single-family existing homes nationwide dipped 1.7% comparing June 2019 to June 2018, and the national MSP increased 4.5% to $288,900 in June. According to the National Association of Realtors, sales in the Northeast declined 4.2%, while the regional MSP of $321,200 reflects a 4.8% rise in

values compared to June 2018. “Buyers are on the sidelines waiting for affordable homes to come onto the market. With mortgage interest rates continuing to hover at historic lows, we expect that markets will remain healthy and respond as for-sale inventory becomes available,” says Harrington.

Our amendment will help us to fix the Navy’s human resources oversight and put workers at the shipyard on the same career trajectory as their colleagues,” said the Representatives from Maine and New Hampshire. Prior to January 2016 and after December 2016, GS-5/7 level shipyard workers, including those at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PSNY), were eligible for a one-time accelerated promotion to the next higher-grade after successful completion of training. However, when the Navy’s Office of Civilian Human Resources (OCHR) stopped the accelerated promotion program (APP) between January 2016 and December 2016, workers hired during that period were not eligible for the career advancement program. In December 2016, APP was put back into place, but employees hired in that time period were never made whole.

With this funding, UNE and UMaine will be able to integrate geriatrics with primary care through the delivery of geriatrics training to physician assistants and nurse practitioners working in rural areas, as well as community-based efforts to maximize patient and family engagement. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Hi Elizabeth, I just have a simple question, what is the key combination for shutting down a window when it won’t X out? I use Windows 7. Thanks so much, Arlene Dear Arlene, When you want to close a window and either can’t get to the X or it is not responding, you can use the keyboard combination, “Alt + F4. When you hold down the Alt key, and press the F4 key (located in the top row of the keyboard) it closes the active window. If you tap the F4 key repeatedly until all windows are closed, it will then begin a shutdown of Windows. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I was looking at your response to shut down windows 10 computer just hit the power button on the computer and shut it down. It is the easiest way I find on laptops. Not sure if it is OK to use on table tops. Has not hurt my lapt top at all. Albert Dear Albert, Pressing the power button is an acceptable way to shut down your computer, you just need to be aware of a couple

of things. Always press and release the power button to start the shutdown process. If you hold the power button for 4 or more seconds, it will shut the power off to the computer without doing the proper shut down procedure which will damage your computer over time. Turning your computer off with the power button might not be actually shutting it down, but instead putting it to sleep. Since you need to shut down your computer once a day to keep it running smoothly, you will need to make sure that is what pressing the power button is set up to do. You can access these settings in the Control Panel under Power Options. Make sure it says, “Shut Down next to, “When I press the power button and click the “Save Changes button at the bottom of the window. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I bought a new computer running Windows 10. I’m learning new things. I transferred almost all of my info from my older computer, but it won’t let me transfer 3 files, favorites,

contacts and links. HELP! Thanks you for all of your help in the past. Jay Dear Jay, I’m not sure what you used to do your transfer, but I can help you copy your favorites, contacts and links from one computer to the other. On your old computer you will need to open two explorer windows. One for a temporary storage device like a USB drive, and the other for your computer. Place the two windows side by side on your desktop so that you can see the contents of each folder. On the window for your computer, go to your C: drive and open it. On your C: drive, you should see a folder called, “Users double click to open it, then double click on your user name (the one that

you use when you log into your computer) You should now see a folder containing your documents folder, along with your favorites, contacts and links. Now, drag each folder that you want to transfer from the C: drive window to the external hard drive window, the computer will copy that folder and all sub-folders to the external hard drive. When you have finished copying the files, take the USB drive to your new computer, and repeat the steps above, only this time copy from the USB drive to your new computer’s hard drive. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I need to know what security that you recommend for windows 10. Best if free but most inexpensive. I do not do

Dear Susan, The security software that I prefer and use on my computer is Emsisoft Anti-Malware. It is less than $30/year which is far less than many of the other security suites. When you consider the cost of having viruses and malware cleaned out of your computer, this is a great deal. If you are not sure about it, Emsisoft does have a 30 day free version. That way you can try it out and make sure it works on your computer. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Governor Mills. “The internet is a powerful tool, and as it becomes increasingly intertwined with our lives, it is appropriate to take steps to protect the personal information and privacy of Maine people. With this common-sense law, Maine people can access the internet with the knowledge and comfort that their personal information cannot be bought or sold by their ISPs without their express approval. “Internet privacy has become such a critical issue across our country and our state. Gordon E. Bryant, 83, SC A R BOROUGH / WELLS – Gordon E. Bryant died peacefully July 13, 2019 at Gosnell Hospice House. He was the son of Esther Littlefield Miller and Wilbur Clough Bryant. He graduated from Wells High School and attended the University of Maine where he joined the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and served in the Air National Guard. He received Master of Arts from NYU. Gordon taught at Cony High School and at Traip Academy in Kittery where he coached the football team. The cheerleading coach, and his future wife, soon moved to Bristol. Gordon was high school principal in Pemaquid, Livermore Falls, and at Ponaganset in Rhode Island. Moving back to Maine in 1975 in a snowstorm, he was Assistant Superintendent of Schools for SAD 17 (Oxford Hills) before retiring in 1988. After retiring, Gordon worked as a real estate broker and owned apartments, later moving to an ocean view home in Cape Elizabeth. Gordon spent the last two years at his newly built home at Oceanview in Falmouth. Gordon always had a positive outlook on life. He enjoyed traveling to places especially England where his son and family live. He loved staying active and resting by watching sports. He enjoyed golfing and sailing with the GGWG, a group of friends who enjoyed life. Gordon was a walking pillar of strength and determination. He was a survivor of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and received a kidney from his oldest daughter in 2010. He is predeceased by his wife of 51 years Beverley Bryant and his parents.

John Robert GrifďŹ n, 82 Nancy D. Coleman, 56 SPRINGVALE – Nancy D. Coleman passed away peacefully on June 30, 2019 after a long battle with cancer, and she never complained. She was born May 21, 1963, the daughter of Mark and Carol (Dunn) Burns. Nancy worked as a Senior Coordinator for L.L.Bean for 25 years. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her beautiful eyes and her kind spirit. She loved to work in her flower gardens, and lay in the sun with a good book with her two dogs by her side. Nancy had a kind, quiet way about her that radiated class and grace and most of all she loved laughing at her husband Joel’s sometimes questionable humor. Above all her husband loved her more than anything in this world and they were the perfect match for each other. She was his, and he was her soulmate. She will be sorely missed by her husband Joel Coleman; two sisters Sandy Doerty and Inda Polvere; two brothers Gary and Mark Burns; and numerous brothers and sisters in-laws and

WELLS – John Robert Griffin of Wells, formerly of Lubec, died Sunday, July 14, 2019 at his home following a

battle with cancer. He was born in Eastport on December 15, 1936, a son of Gordon J. and Mary Ruth (Cassidy) Griffin. His father died when he was nine, and John grew up feeling a responsibility to help support his family, with paper routes and other jobs throughout his childhood and teens. John played baseball and basketball at Lubec High and after graduating with the class of 1955, continued his stellar basketball career at MCI and Gorham State Teacher’s College (now University of Southern Maine) including two years as MVP. Following graduation in 1960, John began a long, distinguished career as a math teacher and basketball coach in York, leading his teams to many wins, playoffs and a State Championship. He was a lifelong sports fan, especially loyal to Boston teams. During summers and in his retirement, John worked as a property caretaker in Ogunquit, and enjoyed chats and friendships with many of the homeowners. He loved the beach, trees, plants and flowers, and had a special fondness for the scent of lilacs.

Family meant everything to John. He loved every kind of family visit and holiday gathering. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up, and “Papa John/ Grampa John was known for never missing a birthday. He is remembered for his hearty chuckle and the often-repeated request “Wanna go for a ride? though he always preferred not to disclose the destination in advance. He was loved greatly and will be deeply missed. Survivors include his son Michael Griffin and wife Valerie of Rochester, NH; daughters Ruth Griffin and husband Michael Coleman of Rockport, Mary Bouchard and husband Thomas of Wells; grandchildren Adam, Andrew and Alexandra Griffin, Michaela and Eleanor Coleman, and Hilary and Elizabeth Bouchard; four great-grandchildren Amelia, AJ, Olivia and Preston Griffin; brother Paul Griffin of Fairfield; and many nieces, nephews, and their families. John is predeceased by his sister Ann Stevens. See GRIFFIN page 26...

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked quesWLRQV LV ³:K\ VHQG ÀRZHUV WR D PHPRULDO service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money? Well nothing could be further from the truth. missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

District Honors Volunteers at Luncheon WELLS The Wells-Ogunquit CSD has selected Kerry DeStefano as the “Exemplary Volunteer of the Year” for the 2018-19 school year. This award was presented to her on June 6 during the District’s annual volunteer appreciation luncheon honoring the year’s school volunteers with the theme of “We Have the Best Volunteers in the World.” Wells-Ogunquit CSD Resource Coordinator Maryanne Foley announced DeStefano’s selection to the audience. Foley said that DeStefano has “been invaluable to our staff this year. She has been volunteering almost every day since September, and rarely takes a day off.” Foley added that DeStefano, grandmother to two kindergarteners, works with the FLEX

Regardless of what part they get, the campers are working together in a supportive atmosphere. “You can be creative and people won’t judge you if you’re not acting like yourself,” said Annie Roberge, 10 of Berwick, who plays King Lovie. Lila Fiel, 12, of Berwick, who plays Kaa, agreed that the best thing about camp is the people. “I like the fact that you get to work together,” Fiel said. “And then you get a good outcome to the work you put in the show.” Performances will be 10 a.m. Friday, August 2 and 10 a.m. Saturday, August 3. It’s like having a new job every day; you don’t know what it’s going to bring.” As with the previous school year, about 300 people volunteered varying amounts of time this school year. District volunteers are primarily composed of parents of students, students from Wells High School and retired community members. “Kerry has become an integral part of our staff here at WES,” commented Wells Elementary School Principal April Noble. “She arrives each and every day and has plans that last a full day, most of the time. She is valued by so many of our staff and they look forward to the support she can

provide, whether it be reading with students, running literacy stations, shelving books or assisting in classrooms with managerial tasks. “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart,” for dedication to “the kids,” said Superintendent Jim Daly in a talk to the volunteers who were able to attend the lunch. According to Foley who organizes the volunteer program, volunteers give whatever time that they can or want to as clerical, classroom, library and/or project assistants. At WES volunteers may work in classrooms, the computer lab, the art room, the library or wherever else they may be needed. Anyone interested in volunteering in the Wells-Ogunquit CSD should contact Foley in September at 207-646-5953 x 4204.

Tips for Creating a Pet-Friendly Yard for Summer

People aren’t the only ones who love to spend time in the family yard during the summer months. For the family pet, the outdoor living room serves many purposes – providing a place to relax, burn off some energy, play safely with friends (human and furry), and do their “business. To enjoy the family yard more this summer, consider these tips from the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute’s (OPEI) environmental education program. Skip fake grass - Artificial turf (a.k.a. fake grass) is never a

good idea, especially if you have pets. Plastic grass gets very hot during the summer, is challenging to clean, and is anything but environmentally -friendly. It cannot be recycled, and it requires water to clean and cool it. Pick the right plants and grasses - Go for something hardy that will withstand a high volume of traffic. Buffalo and Bermuda grasses can be a good choice, depending on your climate zone. For other plants and shrubs, check the ASPCA’s list of toxic and non-toxic garden plants for advice before buying. You’ll want soft, yet sturdy, foli-

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Safe Haven Board Member Cass is sewing a onesie for Siamese Sandy. Members of our board are responsible for many things, but sewing a onesie for a cat? Yes, gotta make sure she’s as comfortable as can be. So, here’s the backstory on this beautiful young, blueeyed, chocolate point Siamese. In the short time that Siamese Sandy’s been in our care, she has been examined by our vet, a dermatologist in Portland, and another specialist at Tufts in Boston. All three told us she has the most acute case they’ve ever seen. So we’re now stepby-step eliminating potential allergens that are causing her suffering. Different foods, medications and parasite treatments are all on her protocol, and we’re hopeful that we’ll soon discover what’s causing Sandy so much discomfort. Sandy is so sweet and hungry for love. Please send her good thoughts and healing messages, or even a get-well card. We’ll put them on her door so everyone can see. This very special girl is trying very hard to get well. Meanwhile, to prevent

her from chewing her skin, she was supposed to wear the dreaded cone around her neck which she hates, of course. The dermatologist told us a onesie could work so now Cass is sewing one especially for her. No challenge is too much for our team! Some kittens were recently flown to us from Miami! The shelters there were full, and the people said they wanted only Safe Haven to have them, knowing they’d receive so much love. So now these “snowbird kittens are part of our family. Also this week, an old kitty destined for euthanasia came into our care. He’d been urinating outside his box and the family was fed up. Just one vet visit revealed the poor old guy simply had diabetes. With treatment, he’s now using his box like a perfect gentleman, is very lovable, and will be available for adoption soon.

age near walkways. Choose natural - There are many non-toxic ways to prevent pests in your backyard. Wind chimes near flower and garden beds can help keep pets and pests away. Scented marigolds repel unwanted insects while attracting spider mites and snails. Lavender smells amazing and repels fleas and moths. The oil in basil plants can keep mosquitoes and flies away. Consider pollinators and other wildlife - Family yards provide habitat and food for birds, butterflies, bees and more. Each of these species help We’d like to save even more kitties, but need volunteer help badly. Every intake requires more care. Volunteering just two hours a week is all it takes. How about it? Bring a friend or family member to make it even more fun. We’d love to have you join our team. Just helping to feed, scoop and give fresh water would be a great help! pollinate human food crops and flowering plants, so take them into consideration when you’re selecting your living landscapes. Create a doggy dream yard - There’s no shame in going allout to make your yard a dream for your dog! Some ideas include adding a splash pool, creating

a sandbox for Fido to unleash his love of digging, or adding a puppy pergola to provide shade. Be creative! Your canine will thank you! The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Voice for Animals YORK Archie oh Archie where is your family? This perfect kitty has been waiting for 6 long months for someone to come and bring him home. He loves people and will be content to spend time keeping you company. Yes he is a wonderful companion cat if that is what you want. If you have sweet kids who love cats he will play with them for hours. Archie is a people cat. The reason that a loving family has escaped Archie all this time is because he

prefers no other cats or dogs in the home. Archie is a very clean, neutered young cat who is litter box trained. He is up to date on his vaccinations. If you have a home where he can be the king of his castle, please get in touch with Voice for Animals at in2catz@gmail.com.

tifacts, and to examine and discuss some fascinating historical photographs.. Students looked over the photographic display of past keepers and discovered that one of Eliot’s second grade teachers had an uncle who had once been the

keeper at Burnt Island Light. Before our young learners climbed into their sleeping bags for a much needed night’s sleep at the Burnt Island Education Center, they experimented with sea fireflies and learned even more, this time about bioluminescence. They slept soundly already realizing the importance and impact of their project. Students returned to Eliot Elementary School tired but eager to finish their school-year sharing photos and stories about Burnt Island, encouraging fellow students and teachers to travel to Boothbay this summer and witness for themselves how their efforts had helped support the restoration of such an important landmark in our state.

also developed means to become better at it. One of our friends actually prepaid the restaurant by calling in his credit card. On other occasions a tip was given to the matre’d in order to insure that the check would be given to the correct person. Theatre tickets were bought in advance and presented before the evening was to begin. But the buying of drinks before or after the show was always a challenge. In fact, this was where the competition became the most intense. At the lounge one had to make sure they positioned themselves at the door to enter first. This was extremely important if there was a cover charge necessary in order to enter. A quick payment always gave the competitor an edge. At the bar it became necessary to sit nearest the bar or at least be in a position at the table so that the waitress could see you first. This competitive reciprocity not only took over our weekend evenings out. It also overwhelmed family barbeques and all sporting events. When one had a summer gathering it was clear that the arrival of guest had become a secondary event. What each person brought determined their rank in this newest of competitions. Martha Stewart would be proud of the types of exotic and expensive foods that were brought. Beers from all over the world were given in order to achieve the status of being remembered at future gatherings. Of course the host is also part of this competition. Lavish bars were built in order to satisfy all thirsts and tastes. Foods were spread around every possible inch of space in order to clearly demonstrate that this was where the best outside gatherings were held. To be perfectly honest I miss the days of a few hot dogs or hamburgers on the grill being accompanied by an open bag of potato chips to be washed down by a few chilled cans of ‘Natty Lite’. But, certain luxuries are lost in the quest to be

considered the best. At the end of the event there was a rush in order to see who would be first to invite the entire guest list to their house for the next barbeque. A theme became necessary in order to lure everyone over to his or her respective home. Some of these themes concerned types of foods, choice of drinks, and of course tangent entertainments of a swimming pool, horseshoe pit, or even a bocce’ court. One would think that the females of the ongoing competition fueled this reality. This is not true. When a group of men go to a sporting event for the afternoon it is obvious that the competition is not only taking place on the field. The first round of beers is always considered important. It became an unwritten law that everyone in the group had to pay his turn at buying the beer. The problem here is the number of men in any specific group. If there is more than six a designated driver is necessary in order to keep the combatants out of jail. There is also a backside to this newest of social games. If one decides to not compete they are considered ‘odd’. They are also considered cheap. Mental scorecards are kept by all of the competitors to make sure everyone is competing. Not paying for their ‘turn at the tab’ or not taking their turn at hosting a barbeque has a tendency to destroy many social relationships especially if the couple stays with the group that is competing. They don’t stay in the group for long. The older we get the more competitive our world seems to become. This competition is very progressive in that some of us have had to take out loans in order stay at the top in this field. Gone are the days of simply going out to enjoy each other’s company. It seems that competitive reciprocity is here to stay. Jim Fabiano is a retired teacher and writer living in York. You can contact him at james.fabiano60@gmail.com.

Eliot Elementary School’s Burnt Island Tour

ELIOT On Saturday, June 8, ten wide-eyed and enthusiastic students from Eliot Elementary School in Eliot, arrived in Boothbay and were welcomed by Elaine Jones, Burnt Island Lighthouse Keeper. Students climbed aboard the ship, The Resourceful, and were finally on their way to Burnt Island. All students at Eliot Elementary School spent the winter months engaged in a service learning project, raising money to help with the restoration of one of Maine’s treasures; Burnt Island Light. In October 2018 EES was treated to a wonderful presentation given by Elaine Jones and Debbi Hale. Elaine Jones is the current lighthouse keeper and educational director. The presentation was a wonderful way to kick off the year long project. Debbie Hale lived on Burnt Island when she was a child while her father was the lighthouse keeper. Everyone learned so much and wished there was more time to hear even more stories. Each student and his/her one family member was greeted on the dock at Burnt Island by a living history acting team; 1950’s US Coast Guard Lighthouse Keeper and his wife, who welcomed these excited guests into the keepers dwelling. Here they learned what life was like being stationed at Burnt Island Light. Students toured the home, and even climbed to the top of the lighthouse itself. In small groups students boarded the Sea Swallow, a Boothbay Harbor lobster boat, to learn about lobsters and lobstering. While anxiously awaiting a turn on the lobster boat, students created model buoys to take home and share with their classmates. Students and parents spent all day Saturday and Sunday learning about the island, lighthouse

history, and about the waters surrounding this magnificent island. Using hand-held GPS devices students found points of interest on the island in a scavenger hunt activity. They looked closely at nautical charts learning about where Burnt Island and many surrounding points of interest were located. At low tide students were taken to the shore to dig for clams and sea worms, and later climbed onto the rocky outcroppings to discover life between the tides. Students found sea stars, urchins, crabs, and more as they moved from pool to pool lifting seaweed and rocks. In the evening students returned to the lighthouse keepers dwelling to examine historical ar...DINING from page 18 house to talk and, of course, have a few drinks. Things were so much simpler back then. Something happened during the sixth decade of my life that changed this very comfortable reality. One of our closest friends decided to ‘pick up the tab’ at the restaurant. My comfortable lifestyle was never the same. Because our friends did this I was obligated to buy the tickets at the movie theatre. Then our friends felt obligated to buy the snacks before we went into the theatre. It was as though a veil had been drawn over our relationship. After the show we actually had an argument over whose house we were to go for a late evening cocktail. In fact, the argument became so intense we all decided to go out for a drink. This led to the reality that whoever picked up the tab at the lounge would become the victor of this new form of competition. On that particular evening we lost. My wife was so upset that she didn’t talk to me for 48 hours after what was supposed to be a pleasant night out. From that day on, anytime my wife and I decided to go out with friends or family we were forced into this competitive reciprocity mode. It was almost as if everyone was keeping score. Because our friends had beaten us by buying the drinks that particular night my wife thought it necessary to bring over an expensive bottle of wine on our next night out. I could see in our friend’s eyes that we had ‘upped’ them before the evening even began. On the next occasion we planned to go out I watched as our friends brought over a better vintage or larger bottle of wine. The wine evolved into champagne and the price tag became almost as expensive as the entire night out. The whole atmosphere of our evening changed. During the meal it was obvious that everyone at the table was positioning themselves so that they could grab the check. The act of paying was becoming more important than the evening itself. The older we got the more competitive we became. We

SPORTS Locals to Pedal in the 40th Pan-Mass Challenge NEEDHAM, MA On August 3-4, more than 6,700 riders, including 34 riders from Maine, will pedal up to 192 miles in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) with the goal of raising $60 million for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Cyclists from 43 states and 12 countries will convene in Massachusetts to participate in the PMC, taking on one of 12 routes, which pass through 47 towns and range from 25 to 192 miles, designed to cater to all levels of cycling and fundraising ability. Riders range in age from 13 to 88 and include everyone from seasoned triathletes to weekend warriors. Many ride to honor a family member or friend who has battled cancer, while more than 950 riders and volunteers are cancer survivors or current patients themselves — considered Living ProofŽ of the progress made in cancer research and treatment. Participants are required to raise between $600 and $8,500, depending on their chosen route, though the average cy-

clist raises more than $8,825, which exemplifies the spirit of the PMC and has helped the organization continue to increase its gift year after year, despite declining trends in the industry. Volunteers, spectators, donors and sponsors are also part of the camaraderie on ride weekend, all working together to make a difference in the fight against cancer. “As we prepare for our milestone 40th PMC, we are humbled by the continued support from our growing community, said Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC. “It is thanks to the unwavering passion and commitment of our riders, volunteers, donors and sponsors that the PMC has been able to make such a tangible impact on advancements in cancer research and treatment since 1980. We can’t wait to see everyone on the road come August for what we hope will be a safe and enjoyable ride! If the PMC reaches its 2019 fundraising goal of $60 million, Overstock.com CEO Patrick

Byrne, a cancer survivor and PMC rider, has committed to donate an additional $1 million to the cause. One hundred percent of every rider-raised dollar is donated directly to Dana-Farber through the its fundraising arm, the Jimmy Fund and the PMC is the institute’s largest single contributor, accounting for more than 55 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. In 2018, the PMC donated an unprecedented $56 million to Dana-Farber, bringing it’s 39year contribution to more than $654 million. The following are participants from our communities: Michael Carpentier, Joel Hawes, and Shawn Benedetto from Eliot; Brian Roux and Doug Sanderson from Kennebunk; Justin Matthews from Kennebunkport; Lynne Noel from North Berwick; Tim Tower and Ani Petrov from Ogunquit; Timothy Maguire from South Berwick; Craig Beauregard and Paul Haseltine from Wells; Ellen Fisher, Jim Fitzgerald, Heather Harrington, and David Summerson from York.

Slow Pitch Co-Ed Softball YORK On Saturday, August 3 there will be a double elimination slow pitch co-ed softball tournament, with teams from Maine and NH, with several sponsored by York businesses.

The top three teams receive individual prizes, a group trophy and bragging rights. Prize sponsors include SoME Brewing and the York Rotary Club. To register, visit www.yorkparksandrec.org.

Sailing For a Great Cause KENNEBUNK Honoring a longtime KBIA student and instructor who lost his battle with sarcoma at the young age of 20 in 2005, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta holds a special place in the hearts of many in Kennebunk area. This year it’s the 10th Annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta and sailors and spectators are invited to attend the Saturday, August 3 event. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue in Kennebunk. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, or Chickadee watercraft.

At noon there will be Skipper Meeting followed by sailing at 12:30 p.m. A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. For more information, call KBIA at 207-967-2180 or visit www.kbia.net. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.cancerinyoungadults.org.
