$156,000 Raised at ‘An Evening with Joan Lunden’ Benefits Breast Cancer Living Well Fund YORK – Joan Lunden, along with celebrities, fashions, fare and friends were the highlights of ‘An Evening With Joan Lunden’, as 300 guests gathered to benefit The Breast Cancer Living Well Fund at York Hospital last week at Portsmouth Harbor Events. For the 6th year running, The Pink Pals Ellen Baldwin, Cathy Barnhorst, Barbara Conda and Leslie Ware presented an amazing evening, with guest of honor and keynote speaker Joan Lunden, raising $156,000 to benefit The Breast Cancer Living Well Fund at York Hospital, Thursday, July 16 at Portsmouth Harbor Events. Lunden, widely known
as Good Morning America’s co-host for nearly two decades, was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, and has since made it her mission to share her battle and the transformative effect it has had on her life, in her new book Had I Known and has launched an online channel ALIVE with Joan for women surviving and living with breast cancer. Anecdotes about real life strategies for mixing motherhood with a career in live television charmed and delighted the crowd. Other inspirational moments arrived when ten breast cancer survivors walked onto the stage, large handwritten cards with one-word descriptions of what cancer had meant

to each of them, held high above their heads… ranging from “inconvenient” and “sisterhood”, to Lunden’s “empowered”.
Celebrities gracing the stage were WCVB-TV Channel 5’s Randy Price, entertaining and good-natured emcee
of the evening. He was joined by broadcast journalist and former colleague, Gail Huff Brown, who captivated the audience into bidding higher on the many items donated by local sponsors for the evening’s auctions. On stage, Ciao Italia Host, Mary Ann Esposito graciously gifted not one, but two, at-home personal pizza cooking classes because of a friendly bidding war. A similar scenario sprouted for spots at Joan Lunden’s Camp Reveille Retreat for Women at Long Lake in Maine, and two “in home” dinner parties prepared by Portsmouth Harbor Events’ Executive Chef Stephen HardSee LUNDEN page 4...

year’s theme is the “Wizard of Oz” complete with the movie’s characters in costume. This American Heart Association (AHA) event is aimed at raising both awareness and funds to combat cardiovascular diseases and stroke in women. Barbara Conda, Vice President and Branch Manager at Bangor Savings Bank, is the 2015 Event Chairwoman and has set a goal to raise $50,000. The event begins at 4 p.m. with educational break-out sessions, a silent auction with hundreds of items, and exhibitors. The dinner, created by award-winning Executive Chef Jeffery Savage, will be followed by a speaking program emceed by Channel 8 WMTW Anchor Tracy Sabol. Guests are asked to wear their most creative Oz-inspired attire to stay in-line with the evening’s theme. “Be ready to be whisked away for an unforgettable evening,” said Conda. “We hope you grab your broom stick, oil can or ruby red slippers to make this evening a journey to remember.
But, what will really matter is the knowledge you take away about women’s risk of heart disease and stroke.” Local heart disease survivor Nicole Hardy will share her story of having unexpected heart surgery in her early 40s not once, but twice, within three weeks of each other due to an undiagnosed heart problem. “I want to help women recognize the signs of heart disease and to not brush off their symptoms as just stress or not exercising enough,” said Hardy. “I want to help women heal, to help them feel good about themselves, and to be strong both physically and emotionally after a heart health issue. I want to be an example of this - for my daugh-

honor such a dedicated group,” said Katie Rooks, the “Go Red For Women” Event Director in Maine. The event organizers on the 2015 Executive Leadership Team include: Barbara Conda, Lucie Hannigan, Kimberly LaChance, Marybeth Munroe, Denise Rubin, Sara Szechenyi, See GO RED page 14...

Floral Designs in Ceramic Vessels YORK Members of the Piscataqua Garden Club have been invited by The Museums of Old York to exhibit floral arrangements in vessels crafted by contemporary New England ceramic artists. Their designs will be on exhibit in the Museum’s Remick Gallery at 3 Lindsay Road on Saturday, August 1 from 10-5 and Sunday, August 2, from 1-5. The arrangements will be presented on pedestals in conjunction with the exhibition “Emma Lewis Coleman – Photographs of Maine.” Emma Coleman was a photographer in the 1880s who turned her camera on York’s disappearing rural scenes. Old York owns over 40 of her original prints, and is currently exhibiting a selection through October 17. The garden club members chose from a variety of containers that Mary Harding, curator of the Museum’s George Marshall Store Gallery, gathered from some of the area’s well known craftsmen. She specifically chose pieces that would challenge and inspire the designers. Many of the vessels have unusual surfaces and See FLORAL page 13...

~ News ~ Yardscaping and Native Plants Workshop WELLS – University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers will offer a hands-on yardscaping workshop, including how to incorporate native Maine plants in the yard, 10 a.m.-12 noon, Sunday, Aug. 2, at Wells Reserve, 342 Laudholm Farm Road, Wells. UMaine Extension Master Gardener Volunteers Allan Amioka and Ginger Laurits will cover basics of yardscaping — an ornamental gardening strategy that minimizes or eliminates the use of pesticides and fertilizers, thereby reducing harmful downstream effects. Learn about choosing the right plants for the right place, selecting those that
have low-pest profiles and are well adapted to the area. There also will be a tour of the Native Plants Garden at Wells Reserve, as well as a segment on identifying invasive species. The $7 workshop fee ($5 for Laudholm Trust members) is payable at the event. Meet at the Mather Auditorium building. Participants should dress for the outdoors and be prepared for hands-on learning. To pre-register, call UMaine Extension in York County at 207.324.2814 or email rebecca.gowdy@maine. edu. More information and directions to Wells Reserve are available online at www.wllsreserve.org. NOAA Grants $250,000 for Fish and Lobster Research off Maine Coast
STATEWIDE – The Maine Department of Marine Resources will receive $264,516 in grant funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support the Maine - New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey. The survey gathers important data on the groundfish and lobster populations in near shore waters in the Gulf of Maine, spanning from the Mas-
sachusetts coast to the Canadian border. “The health and sustainability of Maine’s fishing industry is vital to our economy and the livelihood of our coastal communities,” said U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King in a joint statement. “This grant will help fund the inshore trawl survey that provides invaluable insight to assess our groundfish
and lobster populations.” The Maine - New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey is a collaborative research project between the Maine Department of Marine Resources, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, and commercial fishermen. Bi-annual surveys are conducted in the spring and fall using a commercial fishing vessel.

~ News ~ A Day at the Trolley Museum
Atria Kennebunk residents Rita Lemieux, Florence Summerhays, Terry Chart and Avis Nelson recently had a wonderful experience at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport. The museum, founded in 1939, is the largest electrical railway museum in the world. Lemieux was especially excited when she
saw the Butler and Fogg shoe factory where she worked for many years. “I used to take a trolley from Springvale to Sanford every day to that factory. It was not an open cart like the one we were able to go on with our tour today.” Said Rita. The day certainly proved to be “history in motion!”

~ News ~ Ringing Off the Hook: The Proliferation of Unwanted Calls When Congress passed legislation creating the National Do Not Call Registry in 2003, we thought we had put an end to the plague of unwelcome telemarketers who were interrupting Americans morning, noon, and night. But now, nearly twelve years later, phones are once again ringing off the hook. Too many of us can relate to the frustration that results from high volumes of unwanted and disruptive calls. Yet, signing up for the Do Not Call list doesn’t seem to make a difference in far too many cases. In addition, advances in technology, such as robocalls, the ability to disguise, or “spoof” a caller ID, and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), are making it easier for scammers to reach potential victims. A recent Senate Aging Committee conducted a hearing to examine the proliferation of unwanted calls and whether the Do Not Call Registry is still effective. One of our witnesses was Linda Blase, a small business owner from Dallas, Texas, who had become so frustrated and overwhelmed by “junk” calls that she kept a log of them. Over the course of just one month, she said she received 74 unwanted calls, 62
of which were robocalls. From telephone calls from scammers claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and robocalls soliciting home security systems and home mortgages, to a call from someone trying to sell her an ATM machine for her home-based business, the calls keep coming. Ms. Blase has been trying for years to stop these calls through complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), complaints to the Consumers Union, and by registering for the Do Not Call list. Yet, her unwanted calls have not only continued, they have increased. Unfortunately, this is a very common complaint reported to the Aging Committee’s Fraud Hotline (1-855-3039470). In addition, according to the FTC, complaints related to unwanted calls are the largest category of complaints received by the Commission, numbering more than 215,000 last year. A large part of the problem traces to the fact that the regulatory framework behind the Do Not Call list has been rendered ineffective by advances in technology. It used to be that phone calls were routed
through equipment that was costly and complicated to operate. High-volume calling was difficult and expensive, especially for international calls. That old equipment could not easily be used to disguise or “spoof” a caller ID. But now, phone calls can be routed from anywhere in the world at practically no cost. This can be done using so-called “Voice OverInternet Protocol” technology – or “VoIP.” And the computer programs needed to generate these calls are remarkably inexpensive and easy to use. Reputable telemarketers scrub their calling lists against a database to make sure they don’t dial numbers belonging to consumers who have signed-up for the Do Not Call list. If you are on that list, there is a good chance that the telemarketer calling you isn't legitimate. Instead, it could be a scam artist using a computer programmed to generate “robocalls.” These robocalls typically originate offshore, often from call centers in India. But you would not know that fact looking at your caller ID because the scammers “spoof” their caller ID to add credibility and hide their true location. Spoofing is a tool used regularly by telephone con art-
ists and is, unfortunately, very easy. To demonstrate how easy, during the recent hearing on this issue, I received a call from what appeared on my Caller ID to be the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Yet, the call was really coming from a member of my staff, who was
WS
sitting just a few feet away, and with great ease, was able to spoof the DOJ number from his cell phone number using a free IPhone app. While technology exists to easily generate these calls, fortunately it also exists to See CALLS page 13...

Regionally, the Northeast experienced a 12.5 percent uptick in sales, while the regional MSP increased 3.9 percent to $281,200. Marie Flaherty, 2015 President of the Maine Association of Realtors, said, “sellers now have more confidence to make a move
~ News ~ they have been considering for a long time. Many are highly-motivated to relocate, and they have strategically priced their homes to leave less room for negotiation, which they hope will result in a faster sale.” Flaherty, a Realtor with The Flaherty Group, said “Buyers should be prepared to make their best offer, since the seller or their agent are not required to notify
them of the existence of other offers. If a home is in a highly desirable location, well presented and priced at the market, there are often multiple buyers competing for the property. With the limited supply of homes in some areas, it’s important to enlist the services of a highly-skilled Realtor to help ensure a successful transaction.” Source: Maine Real Estate Information System, Inc. Awesome”, Brenda Robinson- as “Sgt. Bobbie T. Beagle” and Breeanna Zoidis FF/EMT-B - as “Sparky.” “Having our first responders participate and be a part of something like this is exciting. They go above and beyond each day to help keep our community stay safe. This was a lot of fun. Everybody really enjoyed it.” Said Engage Life Director Amber Wilson. Care Staff Attendant, Georgia Swain and June Gilpatric played the “Atria Safety Top Dogs” while residents Therese Paquette and Rita Lemieux joined in on the fun in two scenes in the video. KENNEBUNK There are many children in the area who excel in their areas of special interest, and some were honored at awards ceremony last week with KBIA "wedges. Telecommunications companies should be doing more to protect their customers by blocking unwanted calls, but have argued that they do not have the legal ability to do so. In what is a positive development for consumers frustrated by unwanted calls, the FCC has approved a proposal, clarifying that telecommunications companies do, in fact, have the ability to block these calls without being in violation of the law. Ironically, as I, U.S. Senator Susan Collins, was writing this column, I received two back-to-back, unwelcome telemarking calls at home trying to sell me an extended warranty for my car, despite my having signed up for the Do Not Call Registry! When I answered the calls, there was that telltale sign of a robocall—a pause before a person came on the phone trying to pressure me to buy something I did not want or need. If we are going to win the fight against scammers targeting Americans, it is crucial that we get ahead of the technology they use to generate robocalls and to spoof caller IDs. I have been on Dr. Donatello’s program for just seven weeks and I have feeling in my feet, the darkness is noticeably different and it looks and feels better than it has in 25 years. I am very satisfied with the program… it works! ~ Brain Kelly, Dover, NH It wasn’t that my feet hurt that bothered me, but that I was losing my balance. I came to Dr. Donatello’s workshop last year with a walker and 3 months later I finished his program without it. ~ John C., York, ME I had numb/dead feeling feet for years and was diagnosed with neuropathy. My MD took a core sample of my feet prior to Dr. Donatello’s treatment last fall. The dead feeling foot had 5.3 nerves per millimeter. After finishing the treatment, I had another core sample taken and I now have 17.5 nerves per millimeter in my feet! My doctor had never seen results like this. I never thought I would regain feeling like I have. I encourage you to see Dr. Donatello. ~ Tom P. Kittery Point, ME

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Hottest Ticket in Town: ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ By Scott Andrews Staff Columnist OGUNQUITIf you love musical comedy, “Nice Work If You Can Get It” is as close to perfection as a show can get. “Nice Work,” the current offering at Ogunquit Playhouse, is also a Maine premiere and it promises to be the hottest ticket in town for the next couple of weeks. Musical theater is a major passion in my life, and seldom has this passion been more wonderfully fulfilled than with Ogunquit’s topnotch production of this 2012 Broadway hit. As pure comedy, it’s a gut-bust2015 Summer Season!

er. Plus the score is brilliantly melodic and witty. This show’s formula for success begins with the three key elements of musical theater: book, music and lyrics. “Nice Work” represents the collaboration of five theatrical geniuses spread over a span of nearly 90 years. With a scintillating score excerpted from the Broadway songbook of George Gershwin (music) and brother Ira Gershwin (lyrics), “Nice Work” boasts a contemporary book by Joe DiPietro, inspired by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse’s 1926 script for “Oh, Kay!” The setting is the Roaring Twenties, when Prohibition was in full force. The eponymous “work” is bootlegging liquor, an occupation that engaged a vast swath of American society, from wealthy socialites to criminal lowlife. These antipodal elements collide with hilarious results in “Nice Work.” The dramatic genre is farce, but DiPietro’s book goes
further. It is both hilarious and heartfelt, and the audience feels invested in the characters and story. That’s the essence of romantic comedy, but it’s a quality that’s seldom found in farce. The action follows an improbable romance involving an oft-married socialite, played by Joey Sorge, and the tomboy leader of a gang of smugglers, played by Amanda Lea LaVergne. Both Sorge and LaVergne
give show-stopping performances; Sorge’s character is an uber-rich, feckless playboy who’s being pressured into another unwanted marriage by his imperious mother, played by Valerie Harper. Sorge is exceeding funny and the romantic chemistry with LaVergne is palpable. LaVergne is the ultimate gamine, with an infectious feminine charm that fills the theater. DiPietro has created

eight other comic characters. The two gems are played by James Beaman, as a bumpkin bootlegger who’s pressed into service as a butler in a palatial estate. Sally Struthers perfectly nails one of her best-ever roles: a raucously funny temperance crusader. I would have liked to see more of Harper, but her character only appears in the final minutes. Director Larry Raben also gets great performances from five others: Steve Brady, Elyse Collier, Aaron Fried, Valton Jackson and Breighanna Minnema. Plus there’s a chorus of five dashing men -“the vice squad” -- and five gorgeous chorus girls in a variety of scenes. Like Raben’s direction, Peggy Hickey’s choreography is brilliant, particularly in big ensemble numbers. Ogunquit has obtained the rights to the Broadway sets and costumes, adding visual elegance and glamour to a production that’s as close to perfect as theater gets.

Master Wood Carver exhibits “Nubble Light” at YAA Gallery YORK The largest work by far, Cape Neddick ('Nubble') Light dominates the York Art Association Gallery, drawing the eye immediately upon entry. This meticulously detailed wood carving featuring our local treasure, Cape Neddick Light, will be on display and available for purchase at the YAA Gallery, located at 394 York Street in York until August 3. The gallery is open Thursday-Friday from 12-5pm. From the individual rocks of the jagged island coastline to the shingles of the three separate rooftops, each detail is formed through the artist's intricate chisel work, and enhanced with the final layers of paint. The ocean is alive on the edge of the rocks, the white of broken waves causing the eyes to sense motion within the quiescence of the gallery. But the motion is calming, like a gentle beach breeze as the eye moves along the lines of perspective and falls on the lighthouse herself. The elaborate landscape captures, with meticulous detail, the historic Nubble Lighthouse on an idyllic summer day. The lighthouse herself, says artist David Warren, is one of "the most photographed lighthouses in the country" and
an essential part of Warren's annual visits to Maine with his wife. "I never go to Ogunquit without stopping to look at [Nubble]." The entirety of the historically accurate landscape is carved by hand into what began as a two inch thick slab of pine wood directly from the land surrounding the artist’s house and framed with cherry. Officially finished in 2007, the relief took three years to complete. Although it is hard to believe based on the skill of the work, David Warren is an everyday guy chasing his cocker spaniel Madden part way through the interview, and wood carving is, as he calls it, a hobby. During the day, the lifetime Paxton, MA native is a police officer at Anna Maria University. From boyhood David enjoyed working with his hands, inspired by a two-inch tall violin with strings of horsehair, built by his uncle. His own work in carving really began when his son was two years old, and he decided to handcraft a rocking horse complete with real horsehair, a leather saddle and stirrups. Completely self-taught, he produced the entire product with only the
Cape Neddick (‘Nubble’) Light, a wood carving relief by David Warren.
help of a book. Warren has built a canoe, four kayaks, furniture for his home, and other wooden creations for his friends and family. He happily remarks, "I like to create things ... I almost never show them." For Warren the art is about self-gratification, "I enjoy being on the water fishing and paddling around on a kayak I built." For his next project Warren hopes to recreate a pre1961 photograph of the Nubble Lighthouse from a more unique angle that includes the bell tower. This will be the third in the lighthouse series, and hopefully not the last. Because the beauty of Master Carver David Warren's Cape Neddick ('Nubble') Light wood relief carving is in its depth and intricate detail, it is impossible for the camera
to capture the true essence and worth. However, the piece will be on display until August 3 as part of the Images of Land and Sea July show at the YAA Gallery and it is well worth a visit to see. BUSINESS & FINANCE The Spending Habits of Women
Women and men are different in many ways, but they do share some similarities, especially when it comes to their respective spending habits. Perception and reality do not necessarily equate when examining the spending habits of women. Several different organizations took a closer look at what women choose to purchase, and the results may just surprise you. According to Mortgage Choice, women spend more on socializing than on fashion and beauty products. In
addition, women spend roughly the same amount on socializing as men do (37.7 percent for women versus 36.2 percent for men). Men and women seem to spend similarly on entertainment as well. Having fun and enjoying time out with friends seems to be a big source of spending regardless of gender. BUSINESS & FINANCE How tro Handle an Old 401(K)
Upon making the transition to a new job or retiring, many people are unsure about what to do with their 401(k) or other retirement plans linked to their employer. Handling this transition can be costly, and many men and women might benefit from the advice of a professional financial advisor to help them navigate these waters without breaking the bank. Some men and women may think they’re forced to cash out their retirement accounts when moving on to new companies. But, depending on a person’s age, that’s a potentially costly option that can incur heavy penalties. Fortunately, cashing out is not the only option men and women have as they try to figure out what to do with their retirement accounts after retiring or moving on to new companies. Keep the money with your former employer Some employers allow former employers to keep their retirement savings in their plans. This allows men and women to avoid early withdrawal penalties and lets them continue to defer paying taxes on retirement savings accounts until they reach retirement age and need to start withdrawing money. Another benefit to keeping money in an employer retirement plan
even after you leave the company is it protects you if there are rollover restrictions governing any additional accounts you might have transferred the money into. Employers who do allow former employees to keep their money in retirement plans likely included certain language in those plans that govern how the account is managed after employees leave the company. For example, former employees may no longer be able to contribute to the plan or take out plan loans. In addition, when the time comes to withdraw money, you may or may not be allowed to make partial withdrawals from accounts linked to former employers. Read the fine print to determine if keeping the plan with a former employer makes the most sense for you. Rollover into your new employer’s retirement plan. Some people have the option to rollover a 401(k) from a previous employer into their new employer’s plan. But not all companies allow this. If you are allowed to do so, this can make the transition that much easier while still allowing taxdeferred growth on your assets. In addition, if you can rollover into your new employer’s plan, you may be allowed to take out loans based on the amount of your combined plan instead of just loans against new contributions. Rollover and plan loan
eligibility should be confirmed with your new employer. Before rolling over money into your new employer’s plan, confirm your investment options under the new plan. If they pale in comparison to an IRA, you might want to rollover your retirement assets into an IRA that offers more investment options. Rollover into an IRA. Many men and women look to rollover an old 401(k) into an IRA, as traditional and Roth IRAs may offer a wider variety of investment options than a previous or current employer’s
retirement plan. Taxes differ depending on which type of IRA you choose to roll your funds into, so discuss your IRA options with your financial advisor to determine if this is the
best way to go. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by articles from MetroCreative.

Plan to Cut Cancer by 20% Announced STATEWIDE An ambitious new plan to cut Maine’s cancer rates 20% by the year 2020 was announced on Wednesday by Jay Collins, Maine Cancer Foundation Board Member and VP, International Operational Execution at WEX Inc. “Maine Cancer Foundation will be investing $15,000,000 across Maine to stop cancer before it starts, catch it early if it does, and ensure cancer patients in our state have access to the best possible care,” said
Collins. “We care deeply about Maine and the quality of life here. Challenge Cancer: 20/20 is our best effort to move the needle on Maine’s cancer rates.” “Maine was ranked as the 11th worst state in the country for cancer rates last year, and last of all in the New England states,” said Collins, speaking to a group of local business leaders and top fundraisers at a “Tri for a Cure” reception held at the McKernan Center in South Portland. “The hard reality is 1 in 4 Maine residents will re-

ceive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime,” said Collins. The announcement of the plan, called “Challenge Cancer: 20/20”, comes in advance of Maine Cancer Foundation’s Tri for a Cure, presented by WEX Inc. The all-women charity triathlon includes more than 1300 women and is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 26th at Southern Maine Community College. “It is important to appreciate the progress that has been made. Overall, cancer rates have declined 13% since the year 2000, but Maine continues to lag behind gains seen in other states,” said Collins. “There is nothing stopping the people of Maine from meeting and beating the national cancer trends. Challenge Cancer: 20/20 is going to require cooperation at all levels; public, private, civic and business.” It is estimated that nearly half of all cancer cases in Maine could have been prevented by avoiding
known carcinogens and adopting a healthy lifestyle, while a third of all cancer deaths could have been prevented with earlier detection or improved screening. “Prevention and early detection are the low-hanging fruit for achieving dramatic improvement,” said Tara Hill, Executive Director of Maine Cancer Foundation. “Challenge Cancer: 20/20 allows us to focus on real, immediate gains. The thought of losing a loved one to a preventable or treatable cancer is unacceptable. The work of this campaign is clear: stop cancer before it starts, and ensure the best possible care is available to the people of Maine.” Initial reaction to the Challenge Cancer: 20/20 plan has been strong, with endorsements from Maine’s congressional delegation including Senator Collins, Senator King, Representative Pingree and Representative Poliquin, as well as groups such as the Maine Public Health Association.

Jay Collins announces Challenge Cancer 2020 plan at the McKernan Center.
“Cancer is an issue that affects all of us,” said Collins. “I’m wearing two hats tonight, both as a board member and as a representative of WEX. I’m also pleased to announce WEX has joined the Challenge Cancer: 20/20 effort as the first Business Partner. WEX strongly believes in the idea of people working together – unified for cause –and the simple concept, “the power of many united.” Serving as a Challenge Cancer: 20/20 Business Partner is a natural fit as it enables us to directly support the goal of ending cancer and supporting our corporate health and wellness objectives. The multiplier effect of promoting personal health for our employees and for the community cannot be overstated- this type of effort benefits us all.” In the coming months, Maine Cancer Foundation will continue the first stage of the Challenge Cancer: 20/20 plan with a state-wide outreach effort and the first round of grant funding for key cancer prevention & screening programs. “For a long time cancer has been a major challenge for Maine,” said Hill. “It’s time to challenge cancer back.” The Maine Cancer Foundation provides funding to promote and support the most promising and effective cancerfighting programs available to the people of Maine. ~ Libraries News ~ Dyer Library/Saco Museum Moving Panorama of Pilgrim's Progress
Join us for an exciting performance of the full-scale, modern replica of the Moving Panorama of Pilgrim's Progress on Saturday, August 8 at 5 p.m. at Saco City Hall. Come recreate the historic experience of seeing a moving panorama in action with live piano music by Jeff Rapsis and narration by Colby Harrison. Meet the authors and get a signed copy of the new panorama book, “The Painters' Panorama: Narrative, Art, and Faith in the Moving Panorama of Pilgrims Progress.” The book illustrates, in a way that no other work of art has done before or since, a moment when ideas about faith, art, and landscape all traveled along the same narrow highway in the course of American life. Also known as Bunyan’s Tableau, it was created in 1851 and presented to audiences nationwide throughout the second half of the 19th century. Panoramas were presented by scrolling the massive canvas paintings across a stage, accompanied by narration and music. John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, on which this panorama is based, was also a sensation in its time and beyond. The Moving Panorama of Pilgrim’s Progress was one of the most important moving panoramas in the United States, an exceptional example of this genre of painting that bridged high art and popular culture. Tickets $5 at the door.

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Now is the Time to Adopt a Cat! Our shelter is at capacity. In addition to the usual summer rush, we recently assisted in several hoarding cases. We have more than 200 felines in our care right now. Help us get our shelter cats into their new homes as fast as we can! As a No Kill facility, cats remain in our care for as long as it takes for them to find their new home. But there are many other cats out there waiting for our help, so please adopt one of our current residents today to make space for another cat in need. Foster Homes Needed for AWS Fostering pets that are not ready for adoption is great way to make a difference. Our foster program allows us to care for many more animals than we could if they had to stay at the shelter. Many animals require more involved or long-term care. These cases are placed into foster care in volunteer and staff homes and return to the shelter when they are ready for adoption. All you need is a safe place in your home — away from family pets — and lots of love. Animal Welfare Society provides everything else, including beds, toys, food, litter and medical care; you name it! If you are interested in getting involved with our foster program, please visit www.animalwelfaresociety.org to learn more and submit an application. Meet Baily, a sweet 8-year-old Boxer mix who is looking for her new home! She is a favorite of our staff, including our obedience trainer Kim, who has been taking Bailey to classes. She has become quite a model student and is a joy to have in class. Bailey would be happy to share a new home with dogs and respectful children. Stop on by the shelter today to meet Bailey and
Bailey
see if she’s the right one for you. Meet Blackie, a 12-year old short-haired cat. Blackie is diabetic, but it’s kept under control by a steady diet of wet food. No medication or insulin is currently needed. Blackie is a darling old soul. She doesn’t make a whole lot of noise or call attention to herself, but she’s always happy when people find her and lavish her with attention. She would make a welcome addition to just about any household, though she would prefer not to live with dogs. If you’d like to add Blackie to your home, then stop on by the shelter today to meet her. Meet Merlin, a 2-year old Lop Mix Rabbit. Merlin is a magically adorable and friendly fellow. He’s always ready to adventure outside his habitat and is quite friendly with people who come to visit. His unique, Dalmatian-style coloring makes him quite the looker, as does his rounded face. If you’d like to add a fluffy, friendly critter to your home, then stop on by the shelter today to meet Merlin. Calendar of Events: Saturday and Sunday, August 1, Annual Antique Show at
Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Cat of the Week See that adorable face looking out the window? That’s Sterling. He’s looking out of his cat room window into our adoption center’s kitchen to see what’s for dinner. Sterling is a wonderful fellow who’s been with us for several years. Formerly feral, he’s now one of the first to rush out to greet you when you enter his room. He loves all the other cats he lives with, too, and will want kitty companions to share his life with. If you’re looking for a companion for your kitty, Sterling is a great fit! This shorthaired gray looks a lot like a Russian Blue. He has a great spirit, is healthy, neutered, and up-to-date on shots. We’re hoping he’ll soon find the forever home he’s been waiting for all these years. We offer special low adoption

fees for long-term residents like Sterling to encourage adoptions. FMI call Lisa 207-281-3978. Very special thanks to Michael Smyser and John Varga of Ogunquit. They just presented Safe Haven with $900 worth of PetSmart gift cards to buy items for our cat rooms. They recently toured our new Adoption Center and met our kitties and volunteers. We’re thrilled to have them in our Safe Haven Family. They listened to each kitty’s history and were keenly interested in those with special needs. Now they’re actively supporting our mission of love. How about you? Mark your calendars! On August 22 from 12-4 p.m., join us to celebrate our Adoption Center Open House! Tour our sunny cat rooms and meet our adoptable kitty residents. Enjoy light refreshments.
Participate in our silent auction and raff les. Prizes have been donated by supporters and local businesses. Want to donate an item or service to our silent auction? Preparing Pets For Hurricane Season It is not realistic to think certain areas cannot be affected by a hurricane. The entire Atlantic and Gulf coasts are considered high-risk areas. Inland areas are affected by the high winds, floods and tornadoes. The best protection from a hurricane is to be prepared and have a plan. These plans should include the entire family - that means our pets. To help pet owners prepare for hurricane season, TripsWithPets.com provides an online Disaster Preparedness and Resource Guide for Pets, www. tripswithpets.com/prepare. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I need to know what security you recommend for windows 8. Best if free but most inexpensive. I do not do a lot of surfing the internet or play games. Thanks, Susan Dear Susan, The security software that I prefer and use on my computer is AVG Internet Security. It is less than $60/ year which is far less than many of the other security suites. When you consider the cost of having viruses and malware cleaned out of your computer, this is a great deal. If that is too much for your budget, AVG does have a free version. Some other free products would be Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials. Of the free products,
AVG and Avast would be the best choices. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I bought a new computer running Windows 8.1. I'm learning new things.I transferred almost all of my info from my older computer, running Vista, but it won't let me transfer 3 files, favorites, contacts and links. HELP!! Thanks you for all of your help in the past. Jay Dear Jay, I'm not sure what you used to do your transfer, but I can help you copy your favorites, contacts and links from one computer to the other. On your old computer you will need to open two explorer windows. One for a temporary storage device like a USB drive, and the other for your computer. Place the two windows side by side on your desktop so that

you can see the contents of each folder. On the window for your computer, go to your C: drive and open it. On your C: drive, you should see a folder called, "Users" double click to open it, then double click on your user name (the one that you use when you log into your computer). You should now see a folder containing your documents folder, along with your favorites, contacts and links. Now, drag each folder that you want to transfer from the C: drive window to the external hard drive window, the computer will copy that folder and all sub-folders to the external hard drive. When you have finished copying the files, take the USB drive to your new computer, and repeat the steps above, only this time copy from the USB drive to your new computer's hard drive. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I was looking at your re-
sponse to shut down windows 8 computer just hit the power button on the computer and shut it down. It is the easiest way I find on laptops. Not sure if it is OK to use on table tops. Has not hurt my lapt top at all. Albert Dear Albert, Pressing the power button is an acceptable way to shut down your computer, you just need to be aware of a couple of things. Always press and release the power button to start the shutdown process. If you hold the power button for 4 or more seconds, it will shut the power off to the computer without doing the proper shut down procedure which will damage your computer over time. Turning your computer off with the power button might not be actually shutting it down, but instead putting it to sleep. Since you need to shut down your computer once a day to keep it running

smoothly, you will need to make sure that is what pressing the power button is set up to do. You can access these settings in the Control Panel under Power Options. Make sure it says, "Shut Down" next to, "When I press the power button" and click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the window. Elizabeth Hi Elizabeth, I just have a simple question, what is the key combination for shutting down a window when it won't X out? I use Windows 7. Thanks so much, Arlene Dear Arlene, When you want to close a window and either can't get to the X or it is not responding, you can use the keyboard combination, "Alt + F4". When you hold down the Alt key, and press the F4 key (located in the top row of the keyboard) it closes the active window. If you tap the F4 key repeatedly until all windows are closed, it will then begin a shutdown of Windows. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
