The Milkman Is Back! By Adam Marletta Contributing Writer YORK COUNTY “No milk today / My love has gone away,” proclaimed Herman’s Hermits back in 1966. But that is not a phrase Jim Pastor, a milk deliveryman, finds himself saying today. Yes, you read correctly: Pastor spends his days delivering milk in York County, often times decked out in a traditional white milkman’s uniform complete with bowtie. He calls himself, “Jimmy the Milkman.” “This thing is like a farmer’s market on wheels,” Pastor quips, gesturing to his delivery truck. Pastor’s milk—which includes chocolate milk, coffeemilk, and strawberry milk as well as traditional two percent and whole milk—comes exclusively from Harris Farm in Dayton, Maine. Pastor also carries various Oakhurst products like butter, cream, and eggs, as well. The important thing Pastor remarks, is that everything is from Maine. “You can put anything on this truck,” he says, “as long as it’s local. That’s the way I want it.” Pastor currently delivers

milk to about 75 homes in York, 50 in Kennebunk, 45 in Saco, and ten in Kittery. He leaves his home in Dayton at 1 a.m. every morning to load his truck. He typically hits his first house on the delivery route at 3:30 a.m.. And by 11 a.m., right around the time most people are thinking about lunch, Pastor’s workday is finished. But Pastor does not mind the early hours. Then again, he has been in the milk-delivery business since 1978 when he moved to Maine from Southern California. “You really feel like you are part of the community,” he says. “People in Maine are so inviting and trustworthy. I have had customers give me the keys to their house, so I can go into
their kitchen and put the milk directly in the refrigerator.” Some customers, Pastor notes, have even invited him to graduation ceremonies. “I love watching the kids grow up,” he says. Pastor recalls a work mishap that occurred his very first day on the job. He neglected to properly shut and latch the truck door and stopped short for a red-light. This, naturally, caused many of the bottles to fly forward and crash to pieces. Luckily, they were empty. “In the milk business, what can go wrong has,” he says, smiling back on the incident. While Pastor laments the cultural decline of the milkman in contemporary life, he suspects his kind are experiencing something of a resurgence. “It’s

in funding this weekly class. “ In April of this year, Garnhart was awarded a SATYA Honorarium to support her dedication to bringing yoga to veterans. Rochelle Jewell, president of SATYA, says, “We are so pleased to be able to support Nancy’s efforts to bring yoga to our local veterans. Her work is directly in line with SATYA’s mission to support yoga teachers who are reaching traditionally under served populations. Sev-

an American tradition,” Pastor says of the milkman. Sure enough, at a recent farmers’ market set-up in Wells, Pastor picked up a new customer - a young mother who has recently moved to the area. He suspects much of the renewed interest in milk delivery is the convenience of the service. “Grocery stores always place
the milk in the very back of the store,” Pastor says. “This makes it easier to overlook. Especially when you have your kids crying for things like Cap’n Crunch and Pop Tarts. People tell me having the milk delivered makes it one less thing they have to worry about. It is one less stress See MILK page 7...
