Berwick Unveils New Branding at Summer Concerts BERWICK Envision Berwick is proud to present Bring “Your Lawn Chairs to Sullivan Square” on the lawn of Berwick’s Town Hall in Sullivan Square on August 3 and 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. The town festival will showcase local Seacoast bands Texas Pete, Terrie Collins Band, Big Picture Band, High & Dry and Andrea Szirbik Groft. Envision Berwick expect the festival to serve as the inaugural event in an annual series of free concerts celebrating the community with a gathering of locals, townsfolk, and anyone else who loves great music, good times, and free fun. Jeremy Kasten, one of the
event’s organizers, says, “Bring Your Lawn Chairs to Sullivan Square” is an important step toward establishing Berwick as a place for family fun and entertainment. This isn’t the biggest town festival in Maine this summer, but it might be the most charming. We aim to host an event that unites our local Seacoast towns. These towns share a common tradition of being both authentic and fun.” Bring Your Lawn Chairs to Sullivan Square will feature live music, face painting, the tri-town bookmobile, an ice cream truck, a food truck, and Berwick-brewed craft beers from Corner Point Brewing Company.
The event will also serve as the launch of the town’s new branding and logo. A variety of Berwick town merchandise featuring the new logo will be available for purchase. There will also be t-shirts and stickers for the concert series. Pixels & Pulp, a Berwick and Portland, Maine-based graphic design firm, was hired by Envision Berwick to develop a new logo and brand identity for the town. Pixels & Pulp specialize in branding, website design, campaign and event collateral design, and they have been working with progressive clients in the U.S. and abroad since 2008. Co-founder Elise Weeks has lived and worked in
Berwick for the past eight years and was honored and excited to develop a new look and feel for the town. “I love Berwick. It’s a great place to live, work, and raise your kids. There’s a
wonderful sense of community here,” says Weeks. “This is a great time to undertake this branding effort, not only for current residents and business owners alike, but for those who are potentially looking to put roots down here, too.” Pixels & Pulp worked closely with Envision Berwick and local community members to ensure the design achieved the strategic goals of the town and captured the spirit of the community. The branding will be rolled out in phases to include new town signage, updates to the website and social channels, print collateral, apparel, and other promotional materials.

Offshore Wind Power Expert in York YORK Habib Dagher, one of the foremost experts on wind power in the world, will speak at the York High School Auditorium on Tuesday, August 6, at 7 p.m. Dr. Dagher will talk about capturing energy from wind over the Gulf of Maine and the resultant significant advantages to the

State of Maine. Nearly 80% of offshore wind resource is located over deep water. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Dagher and his 200person team have developed floating wind turbine hull technology that can harness strong winds over ocean depths of 150 feet or more. The hulls can be fabricated in Maine, towed out and moored far offshore, where wind turbines will not be visible from land. The University of Maine and Dr. Dagher’s lab have won $40 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to build a floating wind turbine demonstration project called Aqua Ventus I. The goal of the project is to test the technology, develop
the supply chain, and determine the floating wind turbines’ impacts on the environment, fish and birds. Winds over the Gulf of Maine can produce more than 156 gigawatts (GW) of clean, renewable energy in a year. The State of Maine uses just 2.4 GW annually. Offshore wind in Maine will start a new industry that will create jobs in engineering, construction, manufacturing, maintenance, navigation, and other support. It will reduce Maine’s reliance on imported fossil fuels (almost $6 billion a year) and keep more of our energy dollars in Maine. For more information, go to yrf100.org or composites. umaine.edu.

lance. Law Enforcement Support Bill Signed into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. Recently, bipartisan legislation was signed into law that will restore grant funding for law enforcement support services and allow grant recipients to use funds to establish suicide-prevention programs and mental health services for law enforcement officers. The Supporting and Treating Officers in Crisis Act was introduced by U.S. Senators Susan Collins (RME), Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) earlier this year, and the Senate unanimously passed their bill in May during National Police
TURN A SUMMER HOT SPOT INTO A COOL COMFORT ZONE .
Week. “Every day across the country, law enforcement officers put their lives on the line, endure enormous pressure, and witness unimaginable tragedies in the line of duty to keep our communities safe,” said Senator Collins. “We owe these brave men and women more than just our gratitude. This bipartisan bill will provide with the resources they need to ensure their wellbeing and mental health.” Suicide is the number one cause of death for police officers in the United States. Current grant programs do not allow for funds to be used for suicide prevention efforts, mental health screenings, or training to identify officers at
risk. This legislation restores and expands grant funding for these law enforcement support services. The Supporting and Training Officers in Crisis Act has been endorsed by many of the nation’s top law enforcement and mental health advocacy groups, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the National Sheriffs’ Association, the Major County Sheriffs of America, the National Association of Police Organizations, the National Fraternal Order of Police, the Sergeants Benevolent Association of the New York City Police Department, the National District Attorneys Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

~ News ~ Noble Middle School Celebrates New Playground KENNEBUNK Noble Middle School students will have a new playground to celebrate the start of the school year this fall, thanks to volunteers coordinated by United Way of York County. After eighteen months of planning, construction on the playground began on May 29 with the help of volunteers from Pratt & Whitney, Otis Elevator, United Way of York County, and Noble Middle School. Finishing touches were put on the playground during the United Way of York County Day of Caring on June 5, when volunteers from Hussey Seating Company finished landscaping. “Through United Way of York County’s focus on Connected Youth projects, we are able to connect the generosity of community partners with meaningful volunteer opportunities that support our local students,” noted Jason Ketterick, UWYC’s Community Impact Director. Funding for the playground was made possible by student-body fundraisers, which were in part supported by Hannaford. The project was also supported by River Drive Cooperage & Millwork in Buxton. “Partnering with United Way of York County is how we make sure our hard-earned money goes right where it needs to be — into the community, fostering opportunities for others,” said Matt Albrecht, owner/ founder of River Drive. Heather Danielsen from Pratt & Whitney’s engineering department, was one of several of the company’s volunteers for the project. “I feel so good knowing that these kids finally have a playground to use during recess and after school! Especially after volunteering at Noble Middle School for the past two years and seeing them only have a field to use,” said Danielsen. “The playground was a unique volunteer
opportunity that was rewarding to help plan. Putting engineering knowledge to work to help the local community was amazing!” “Noble Middle School was thrilled to partner with United Way of York County and these amazing local companies to build something that our kids have wanted for many, many years. This fitness zone will be a new and exciting healthy opportunity for our kids for years to come,” said Kristen Hobbs, Intervention Coordinator & Data Manager

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Trio of Exhibits at George Marshall Store Gallery YORK The three separate gallery spaces in the George Marshall Store Gallery are the venues for three distinct exhibitions, on view through August 18. The front gallery space, entered at the street level, is dedicated to paintings by Lincoln Perry and Craig Hood and wood turned sculptures by Derrick Te Paske. The small gallery which looks out upon the John Hancock Wharf and the York River, holds a solo exhibition for Portland artist Noriko Sakanishi . The lower level gallery, which can also be entered from the dock level, presents the work of three followers of master watercolor artist DeWitt Hardy: Bill Paarlberg, Ken Fellows and Russel Whitten. Perry and Hood share a jewel-like palette and both are interested in landscape and the figure. Perry who lives part of the year in York, is also a respected muralist. His mural at the University of Virginia decorates the stairwells and hallway of Old Cabell Hall, a building designed by McKim, Mead and White. Here he depicts the life of a student at the University in a sweeping colorful narrative. The artist’s interest in the figure and the narrative is apparent in the six large canvases on exhibit. Almost life size figures pose as the four elements: Water, Earth,
Fire and Air. “Is Paris Burning” completed in 2017, is a dramatic classical composition of broken store mannequins in front of the profile of Notre Dame and a firestorm sky. By comparison, the figures in Craig Hood’s paintings are diminutive, only inches high, and partially obscured by a fog-like haze. Despite their scale and obscurity within a vast and moody environment, they are central to the narrative. Titles such as “World Away,” “Penumbra,” and “Long Black Veil” suggest an ominous or foreboding place. In his statement he compares his figures to migrants or refugees whose “underlying condition and motivating factors are fear and concern.” In these places of solitude they hope not to draw attention to themselves but to find freedom and peace. Complementing the paintings are wood-turned sculptures by Boston area artist Derrick Te Paske. His elegant simple forms take advantage of natural grains and are often embellished with markings and studded with brass or copper pins. Noriko Sakanishi has been working abstractly since the 1970’s. There seems to be no limit to the combinations that she can make while restricting her shapes to simple squares, See GALLERY page 27...

Steampunk Fair Returns KENNEBUNK The Southern Maine Steampunk Fair, one of the area’s most unique events, returns to Kennebunk’s Brick Store Museum, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, on Saturday, August 10. The Fair, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is now in its 5th year at the Museum, celebrating all things steampunk. Not sure what “Steampunk” is? It’s the perfect marriage between history and future - a view of the world if Victorian aesthetics and steam power were in existence in the modern day. Much like the design of 20,000 “Leagues Under the Sea” or Sherlock Holmes, Steampunk is a Victorian view of the future. The fair occurs on the Museum’s outdoor campus, inside the galleries, and at the adjacent Town Hall auditorium, having grown in size since its first event in 2015. The fair offers demonstrations of artwork and craft-making, vendors, meet-and-greets with Steampunk author Leanna Renee Hieber, Tea Duels, live music by Oh’Anleigh, a costume contest and Victorian lawn games, all with a futuristic twist!

Factors For Choosing a Mortgage Lender A home is the most significant purchase many people will ever make. Perhaps because of that, many buyers, particularly those purchasing a home for the first time, are understandably nervous about the home-buying process. The decision regarding which home to buy warrants ample consideration, but so, too, does the buyers’ choice of lender. Mortgage lenders can be found all over the internet, and the sheer volume of lender options can make it hard for home buyers to find the right fit for them. Couple that with lending-related terminology that many firsttime buyers may be unfamiliar with, and it’s easy to see why prospective homeowners can feel overwhelmed about the process of borrowing money to buy their homes. When looking for a mortgage lender, prospective homeowners should never forget that the choice of lender is, in most cases, entirely theirs to make. When making that decision, a host of variables should be consid-
ered. The following are three such factors that, upon ample consideration, may help buyers rest easy knowing they did their due diligence when looking for lenders. Reputation/recommendation Just like other businesses, lenders have reputations, and oftentimes those reputations can be determined via some simple online research. Peruse online reviews to determine what past buyers felt about a given lender. If possible, ask friends, family or colleagues who they worked with to secure a mortgage. Fees Fees vary from lender to lender. Fees should not be mistaken for interest rates, which change daily and are typically dictated by the financial industry and prospective buyers’ credit history and financial standing. When speaking with potential lenders, ask for a rundown of their fees, and the services those fees include, and closing cost estimates in writing, then compare and contrast fees and costs of various lenders before making a final decision. Some lenders may charge considerably more in fees than

others, so buyers should put in the effort necessary to comparison shop. Personal interaction Buyers, especially those who have never before purchased a home, will likely have lots of questions. This is where
How Parents Can Create Household Budgets Raising a family is no small feat. Along with the love and joy, there are some obstacles that must be surpassed, including the financial investment required. The high cost of raising a child only emphasizes the importance parents must place on creating household budgets. A few dollars put away here and there can add up to substantial savings over the years. Housing is many families’ most substantial monthly expense. When determining how much they can afford to pay for housing, families may come up with a figure they’re comfortable paying for their monthly mortgage. But it’s important that parents, particularly those who have never owned their own home before, also take utility costs into consideration before signing their mortgage agreements. Utility costs for single-family homes can dwarf the cost of utilities in apartments.
Join us for a FREE conversation about elder law and how we can help you.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey recommends people making housing budgets commit 58 percent of total housing costs to mortgage payments, 21 percent to utilities, just over 9 percent to furnishings and equipment, and roughly 7 percent to household operations. Utilizing this formula before taking out a mortgage can help families ensure they are not scraping pennies together each month to meet their housing costs. Food is another significant expense, especially for growing families. The BLS notes that the average U.S. household spends just about 13 percent of its monthly budget on food. Parents who examine their spending habits over the previous year can look at how much they’re devoting to food and find ways to reduce that figure if it’s well over 13 percent. Reducing food spending may require more savvy spending at the grocery

store, including shopping sales or buying certain items in bulk when it’s advantageous to do so. Parents may find this odd, but the BLS reports that the average U.S. household spends more of its monthly budget (roughly 17 percent) on transportation than it does food. Parents who want to trim their monthly budgets can opt for more affordable cars and trucks, reserving their splurging on luxury vehicles for later in life when their kids have moved out of the house. When creating their household budgets, parents should leave room for unexpected miscellaneous expenses, such as healthcare costs if the children get sick and clothing and entertainment. Without accounting for such expenses, parents may find themselves taking on potentially crippling debt in times of emergency. Carefully constructed household budgets can help parents survive the often expensive costs of raising a family.

Six Options for Funding Your Next Home Improvement Project Before starting a home improvement project, either on one’s own or with the assistance of a professional contractor, homeowners must first consider the costs involved. According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, more than one-third of homeowners do not understand what hiring a professional will cost, and then cannot successfully budget and secure financing once they have set their sights on a renovation project. HomeAdvisor says that some of the more popular projects, such as remodeling a kitchen or bathroom or building a deck, can cost, on
average, $19,920, $9,274 and $6,919, respectively. Homeowners may find that the more expensive renovations require them to secure some type of financing. Those who have never before sought such financing may want to consider these options. 1. Cash-out refinancing: With cash-out refinancing, a person will begin the mortgage process anew with the intention of paying off the current mortgage balance, and then taking out additional funds for other purposes. Cash-out refinancing is a way to tap into a home’s existing equity for use on improvements or other expenses, such as college tuition.
2. Home equity line of credit: The financial experts at Bankrate indicate that a HELOC works like a credit card, with the house as collateral. There is a credit limit, and borrowers can spend up to that limit. The interest rate may or may not be fixed. However, the interest may be tax-deductible if the financing is used to improve, buy or build a home. 3. Home equity loan: Individuals also can borrow against equity in their homes with a fixed interest rate through a home equity loan. Most lenders will calculate 80 percent of the home value and subtract a homeowner’s mortgage balance to figure out how much
young adults who one day plan to have children can open accounts and name themselves as beneficiaries and then change the beneficiary to their child once the child is born. It might seem odd to start saving for college tuition before you even have children, but it’s never too early to start growing a college fund. Choose a diversified portfolio. Most people are familiar with the adage, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” That adage is especially noteworthy when saving for college. Many people recognize that simply saving for college isn’t enough, and that directing college savings into a 529 plan that allows that money to grow is a savvy way to build college savings accounts. When choosing investments, parents can combat market volatility by investing in diversified portfolios that makes their savings less vulnerable to
loss. In fact, the NY529 Direct Plan allows parents to choose age-based options that automatically shift investments from aggressive to conservative mutual funds as children age. Take your tax deduction. Families are faced with a host of bills each month, and that can make some parents wonder if it’s even possible to contribute to college savings accounts. Speak with an accountant to help you make room in the budget for contributions, which are often eligible to tax deductions that make it easier and more sensible to save for college. Saving can be made easier by employing various strategies to grow savings without adversely affecting monthly budgets.
...TUITION from page 16 and 2012, tuition increases at four-year public colleges ranged from 5.7 percent to 13.3 percent per year. Between 2012 and 2018, those same schools raised tuition raised tuition by just 3 percent per year. The challenge of saving for college might be more manageable if tuition costs don’t rise as sharply as they did between 2001 and 2012. But such costs are unpredictable, so parents should explore other ways to save for college tuition. Start saving as early as possible. It’s never too early to begin saving for a child’s college education. According to rules governing New York’s 529 College Savings Program, adults cannot open 529 Savings plans for unborn children, as beneficiaries must have a Social Security number or taxpayer identification number. However, expecting parents or
can be borrowed, according to the financial advisory site The Simple Dollar. 4. Personal loan: Homeowners can shop around at various financial institutions for competitive personal loans to be used for home improvement purposes. Funds may be approved within one business day, which can be ideal for those who want to begin their improvements soon. 5. Personal line of credit: A personal line of credit allows borrowers to borrow only the money needed at the time, and offers a variable interest rate that is generally lower than fixed loan rates. Again, like a credit card, PLOC gives a person a maximum borrowing amount and is ideal for ongoing purchases. 6. Credit cards: In a pinch, credit cards can be used to finance improvements, but they do come with the cost of very
high interest rates if the balance is not paid in full by the time the bill comes due. However, for funding smaller projects and maximizing rewards points through home improvement retailers or specific credit card company promotions, credit cards can be a way to earn various perks in addition to the benefit of improving a home. Homeowners looking to finance their next improvements should speak to a financial advisor and shop around for the best types of funding for them.

York Sewer District Awarded $70,000 in State Funds YORK Tim Haskell, Superintendent of the York Sewer District, recently announced that the district was awarded the maximum amount of principal-forgiveness loans from Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), to fund the development of two major plans: a Fiscal Sustainability Plan (FSP) and a Climate Adaptation Plan (CAP). The District received a $20,000 loan (with 100% principal forgiveness) to develop a CAP and $50,000 loan (with 100% principal forgiveness) for the FSP. The FSP funds will need to be matched by $50,000 in local funds; the CAP requires no local match. CWSRF programs are capitalized by grants from the US Department of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and dispersed annually, along with repayment funds, through state environmental protection agencies. WrightPierce, an engineering firm with Maine offices, assisted the District in the preparation and submission of the applications in February 2019 to qualify for
the loans. The Fiscal Sustainability Plan will assess the condition of the District’s wastewater infrastructure assets. The plan will include an evaluation of the likelihood of infrastructure failure, and the consequence of failure. A prioritized upgrade plan will be produced to ensure continued reliability and sustainability of the district’s infrastructure, and a financial plan to identify funding needs. The plan will also identify assets at risk from climate change and sea level rise. It will recommend options to protect these assets, so funds can be invested wisely in the community. According to Mr. Haskell, “We are happy to have been recognized as a good candidate for these loans. This is a huge benefit for the residents of York and will help us address urgently needed upgrades to our aging sewer infrastructure.” He added, “These are important studies for the District to conduct as part of our ongoing asset management planning. The funds allow us to broaden our scope of study and consider how to most efficiently protect and sustain our sewer system assets, so they continue to provide reliable service.”

Hospice CEO Responds to Report on Hospice Care YORK COUNTY The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services recently issued new reports by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) that highlighted deficiencies in hospice care and called for safeguards to protect hospice patients from harm. The OIG reported that 20 percent of hospices have deficiencies that put patients at risk and is suggesting that deficiency data be shared more broadly to help improve quality of care. The report is quickly generating national media attention, including coverage by NPR and the Washington Post. Hospice of Southern Maine CEO Daryl Cady offered insight on the report and subsequent media coverage: “While we are proud that Hospice of Southern Maine has not had deficiencies in the past few years, we recognize that deficiencies in healthcare do happen, and should be monitored. That said, 80% of hospices did not have deficiencies. Extreme patient stories highlighted in the report are not representative of the hospice care most Americans receive and can do more to frighten people than inform them about the benefits of hospice care,” Cady said. She summarized several key points from the report about hospice care in Maine: Maine ranks #1 with the fewest deficiencies. 50% of all hospices surveyed in Maine (10 out of 20) had a deficiency between 2012 and 2016. Compared to Michigan, for example, where 99% of all agencies surveyed had deficiencies (130 out of 131). For-profit hospices account for a higher percentage of
poor performers than nonprofits. Cady also added, “Anyone considering hospice care for themselves or a family member should research their options carefully on Hospice Compare, or simply Google the agency they are considering and ‘OIG’ to do additional research.” For the most recent period reported on Hospice Compare, Hospice of Southern Maine meets or exceeds all national benchmarks for care quality and family experience. Nonprofit vs. for-profit status sets Hospice of Southern Maine apart. In 2004, Maine ranked 49th in the nation for hospice care utilization. That year, the community’s healthcare leaders joined forces to create the nonprofit Hospice of Southern Maine. CEO Daryl Cady said “Our goal is to serve more people and meet our nonprofit mission of compassion, care and comfort at the end of life to everyone who needs it, regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay. Simply put, Hospice of Southern Maine was created to combat Maine’s low utilization rate, not for profit.” Today, Maine ranks 19th in the nation and has the fastest growing utilization in the country. Cady added, “We take pride in our contribution to this progress. As a result of our strong track record of high-quality care and effective community education, we have grown 20% in the past four years and expect this trend to continue. I am excited to announce that we are building a new Home Hospice Center to replace our current leased space. This will help us meet the growing need for hospice care at home, education,

and bereavement.” Hospice of Southern Maine cares for nearly 200 patients every day, with 92% receiving hospice care at home. Since 2004, Hospice of Southern Maine has provided end-of-life care to more than 15,000 patients and their families and is the leading provider of hospice care in southern Maine. Hospice of Southern Maine is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, with the mission to provide compassion, care, and comfort through end of life. Formed through a collaborative effort among York and Cumberland County leaders and health care providers, HSM began providing direct patient services in 2004. Today, HSM cares for more than 1,600 patients annually, at the patient’s home, current care facility, and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, an 18-bed inpatient facility in Scarborough. HSM admits patients with a variety of diagnoses, including Alzheimer’s, heart, lung, and kidney disease, stroke, Lou Gehrig’s disease and cancer. Care is patient and family-centered, and provided by a comprehensive interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, aides, chaplains, grief counselors and volunteers. HSM is a Medicare-certified state licensed agency, and the largest independent provider of hospice services in Southern Maine. To learn more, visit www.hospiceofsouthernmaine.org.

Health & Fitness Prescription Medicine Options MAINE Mainers who cannot afford their prescription medicines are reminded of the many options for free or low-cost prescription drugs. These include state and federal programs, pharmacy discounts, copay foundations, and the patient assistance programs of both brand name and generic drug manufacturers. Although primarily helping low-income uninsured individuals, some programs are available to patients with Medicare or commercial insurance, or to those with significant incomes but especially high medical expenses. Because each prescription assistance option has its own frequently changing eligibility requirements and application process, few medical practices or patients themselves can easily identify the most appropriate sources of help for each individual’s unique circumstances. Many Maine hospitals have therefore created prescription assistance programs to which area doctors can merely refer their patients. After evaluating each person’s medication list and financial status, knowledgeable program personnel then manage the medication access process on behalf of both doctor and patient. All Mainers should tell their doctors if they cannot afford to take their medicines as prescribed. Medical practices can then either provide help themselves or refer patients to their local hospital’s prescription assistance program. Prescribers without access to a hospital-based prescription assistance/ medication access resource may request guidance from MedHelp Maine at medhelpmaine@gmail.com or 207793-4462. While this nonprofit cannot provide either meds or money for individual patients, at no charge it will help Maine physicians and their hospitals develop prescription assistance programs to which doctors can refer patients at risk of avoidable ER use or hospitalization due to medication nonadherence.

Heart Smart Travel Tips PORTLAND Planning a trip can be a lot of fun, but your heart’s health is never on vacation. Traveling to a faraway place doesn’t need to be off limits because you are a caretaker, have heart disease, or have experienced a heart attack or stroke. A few simple precautions can ensure your trip is smooth sailing. While researching exciting travel opportunities, do a little extra and be aware of a medical facility at your destination. Bring a copy of original prescriptions in case you lose yours, and always have your doctor’s phone number on hand. Keep in mind a few things when flying. Sitting immobile on long flights can slightly increase a normal person’s risk of blood clots in the legs. Getting up and walking around when possible is recommended for long flights.
Just be sure the seat belt light is not on when you do so! Road trips can take a toll on everyone! Before you go, pack healthy snacks and water bottles. It may be tempting to go through the drive thru at a fast food joint, but apples, oranges, almonds and raisins are both healthier and filling. To avoid added sugar, pack water instead of soda. When on a rest break, make it active. Take a brisk 10-minute walk, stretch, and move around. This will help
burn energy and calories. Pack to play on your vacation. Your normal fitness routine might be too difficult to maintain, but there are plenty of ways to stay active. Pack a football, soccer ball or Frisbee. If your destination has tennis courts or beach volleyball, make sure to get a game in for some fun and fitness. When you finally get to your vacation spot, don’t let your health slip. Be mindful of your
fluid consumption, especially in warmer climates, and control your sodium intake. Stay aware if you are feeling unstable or experiencing shortness of breath. Keeping these tips in mind will ensure your vacation is as wonderful and refreshing as you planned for it to be. For more tips on staying heart-healthy while you travel, visit www.heart.org/healthyforgood.

Kennebunk Savings Provides Safe Prescription Drug Disposal KENNEBUNK Kennebunk Savings is working to make an impact in the fight against the opioid crisis and substance use disorder by giving away prescription drug disposal bags as part of its annual Spotlight Fund program. “The opioid crisis is having a devastating effect on our communities,” said Bradford Paige, President and CEO of Kennebunk Savings. “We hope that getting these medications out of medicine cabinets when they are no longer needed will prevent them from getting into the wrong hands and being misused.” Safe disposal of unwanted or old prescriptions is a key factor in preventing substance use disorder. In an effort to target this one aspect of a mul-
ti-faceted issue, Kennebunk Savings has purchased drug deactivation bags from Deterra. By simply placing unused/ unneeded medication into the bag, the medication’s active ingredients are neutralized, allowing for safe disposal in household trash. The bags are available to bank customers and the public free of charge at any of the bank’s 17 branches. Kennebunk Savings has committed $225,000 over the past two years in support of substance use disorder prevention and recovery efforts. It also designates a portion its budget to its Spotlight Fund, an annual effort to direct grant money to a targeted issue affecting communities. For a second year, the Spotlight Fund is focusing on efforts to combat substance use disorder.

Mainers Reminded to Stay Safe in Extreme Heat MAINE As many parts of the state and New England recover from the recent heat wave, it is important to remember that summer heat and humidity can be deadly. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 600 people in the United States are killed by extreme heat every year. Some people are more at risk of developing a heat-related illness, including adults age 65 and older, those with chronic medical conditions, people who work outside, infants and children and athletes. Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone is experiencing heat cramps in the legs or abdomen, get them to a cooler place, have them rest, lightly stretch the affected muscle, and replenish their fluids with a half a glass (about 4 ounces) of cool water every 15 minutes. If someone is exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion (cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, exhaustion), move them to a cooler place, remove or loosen tight clothing and spray the person with water or apply cool, wet cloths or towels to the skin. Fan the person. If they are conscious, give small amounts of cool water to drink. Make sure the person drinks slowly. Watch for changes in condition. If the person refuses water, vomits or
begins to lose consciousness, call 9-1-1. HEAT STROKE LIFETHREATENING Signs include hot, red skin which may be dry or moist; changes in consciousness; vomiting and high body temperature. Call 9-1-1 immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke. Move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the person’s body by immersing them up to their neck in cold water if possible. Otherwise, douse or spray the person with cold water, or cover the person with cold, wet towels or bags of ice. HEAT SAFETY TIPS Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat. If someone doesn’t have air conditioning, they should seek relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day in places like schools, libraries, theaters, malls, etc. Avoid extreme temperature changes. Wear loose-fitting, light-
weight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays. Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Postpone outdoor games and activities. Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take frequent breaks if working outdoors. Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water. DOWNLOAD RED CROSS APPS People can download the Red Cross Emergency App for instant access to weather alerts for their area and where loved ones live. REMINDED ME OF MANY GREAT CAPE COD RESTAURANTS Outstanding food, classy yet comfortable atmosphere, and skilled waitstaff who were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. I ordered the Eggplant Napoleon and it was delicious. Cooked perfectly, tender without being mushy. Best marinara I’ve ever had. To top it off, the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake was just scrumptious. The whole dining experience was a pleasure from start to finish, and I’m looking forward to returning soon and often. Windows Tip The fastest way to find anything in Windows 10 is to use the search feature in your start menu. The fastest way to get to the start menu is to tap the windows logo key on your keyboard. Let’s say that you want to type a letter in Microsoft Word. The fastest way to open Word, is to tap the windows logo key on your keyboard, and when the start menu appears, type “Word” on the keyboard. Windows 10 will search for what you have typed, and display the results in a list. You can either click on the item in the list that you were looking for, or if that item is already highlighted, tap the “Enter” key. If you wanted to change the wallpaper on your desktop, tap the Windows Logo key, type, “Change Wallpaper” and then click on “Choose Background” in the list that appears. Not only does this work for programs installed on your computer, but it also works for data. Lets say you want to find someone in your contacts. Tap the windows logo key, and then type the person’s name (or even a phone number). Wait a second for the search results to load, and you will see a list of every document that contains that name. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been reading your article for many years. Thank you so much for the wisdom you have shared. I have a question concerning Malwarebytes Premium, I also have Emsisoft. I just wanted to make sure that these are compatible. Can you answer that question? I just wanted to be sure that I am optimally covered. Thanks for any information you can give me. Blessings, Kay Dear Kay, Yes, Malwarebytes and Emsisoft are compatible. However, if you are using Emsisoft, running Malwarebytes in ad-
dition is probably unnecessary. Malwarebytes protects against malware, while Emsisoft will protect you from both viruses and malware. elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Can you please tell me how to take a screen shot on Facebook? Thank you so much, Joanne Dear Joanne, I am going to have to make a few guesses here as to what you are actually trying to do. Guess number 1 is that you are using a Windows computer to view Facebook. Guess number 2 is that you want to take a screen shot of something on your computer and then upload it to Facebook. Guess number 3 is that maybe you want to take a screenshot of something on Facebook and save it on your computer. Lets start with how to take a screenshot on your Windows computer. Simply press the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard. That’s it. The problem is that your screenshot is stored in the Windows Clipboard and you can’t see it. What you need to do, is paste it from the clipboard into a program. Every Windows computer has an image program called, Paint. It is located in your start menu under the “Accessories” folder. A quick and easy way to open the “Paint” program is to tap the windows logo key on your keyboard and then type the word, “Paint”. Click on the Paint program, and you will be ready for the next step. Once you have your screenshot on the clipboard, and the Paint program open, all you have to do is click on “Edit” and “Paste” to paste your screenshot into Paint. Now, save your image and you will be able to upload it to facebook just like any other image on your computer. This will work equally as well if you are trying to take a screenshot of something on Facebook and save it on your computer. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I talked to a geek squad guy and he saw my Advanced System Care on the computer and said it was malware. Is that true? I have been using it for years with no problems. Thanks, Loretta Dear Loretta, No, Advanced System Care is not malware. It is also not an antivirus or antimalware program, so it will not replace those programs on your computer. You will still NEED antivirus and antimalware software. Advanced System Care is a system optimization program. It claims to make your computer run faster and better by automatically running simple cleaning tasks that you can easily do yourself. Lets take a look at the program. First, it says that it will make your PC up to 300% faster. It claims to do this by boosting startup speed, optimizing the registry and removing unwanted files and applications. Those are all pretty vague things, how does the program know what files and applications you want and don’t want? You can easily remove unwanted applications by uninstalling them in the Control Panel. It claims to boost your internet speed by removing cookies and junk files. But, you can do that yourself by going to the Internet options. The biggest problem I have with software that claims to speed up your computer is that by running constantly on your computer, they actually are slowing it down. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady, How do you find out what’s on start-up and how do you go to it? Thanks, June Dear June, The start-up menu in current versions of Windows is located in the Task Manager. To access this information in Windows 10, you will need to open the Task Manager, which can easily be done using the keyboard combination, Ctrl + Alt + Del, then click on “Task Manager” If the task manager opens in a small window, click on the “More Details” button in the lower-left corner. You will then click on the “Startup” tab and go through the list of processes that automatically startup when Windows starts. You can safely disable most of these items, then restart your computer and see if it helps with the problems you are having. I would not disable your security software, as that is what keeps you safe from viruses and malware. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran it, but was wondering: does it automatically rid the computer of malware if it finds it is infected? My understanding is it does. I appreciate your articles! Ellen Dear Ellen, When you run a scan with Malwarebytes, it will display a list of infected files and registry entries when the scan is finished. What I usually do at that point

is select all the infections, and then click the button that says, “Remove Selected” and Malwarebytes will automatically remove the infections. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Recently, you answered a question about One Note, a program that I love. You mentioned saving to the cloud and I honestly don’t know how to do that. Do you think you could explain that in one of your future newsletters? Since I have One Note on my desktop, laptop & my phone, I would be so grateful for more information. Thank you! Jean Dear Jean, When we are talking about computing, the term “The Cloud” is used as a metaphor for “the Internet,” so when we save something to the cloud, all we are really doing is saving our file to a remote computer and accessing it through the internet. When you use a program like OneNote, normally the file is saved on your computer, and when you make changes to it, those changes are saved on your computer. If you have OneNote on another computer, or mobile device. Those changes are not reflected on those devices. If you have an account with Microsoft, you automatically have storage space on their servers. Since you access your storage on Microsoft’s servers through the internet we can say they are stored in the cloud. If you don’t already have an account with Microsoft, you will need to create one. You can sign in, or create an account at: http://login.live.com. Once you have an account, open OneNote and click on the “File” tab. You will see a list of all your notebooks. Find the first one that you want to store on the cloud, and click the link beneath it that says, “Share on web or network”. Follow the prompts to sign into your sky drive account (same as the Microsoft account that you just created) and move your file to the sky drive folder. On your next computer, open OneNote and click on the “File” tab and then “Open”. Select “Open from One Drive” to access the notebook you have saved in the cloud. Once you have it all set up, your files will sync automatically, and you will be able to access your information from all devices. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I get rid of temporary internet files on my iPad? Thank you, David

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

“The Art of Fine Furniture” at Arundel Farm Gallery ARUNDEL Arundel Farm Gallery is a place that showcases creativity, from its spectacular grounds to its galleries, including highlights of museum-quality craftsmanship. The nine-acre country property, just minutes from Dock Square in Kennebunkport, features galleries with both fine art and American Craft in two distinct spaces. For its 2019 season, you’ll be able to view and purchase the styles of two fine furniture craftsmen with interesting stories to tell. Artist Tommy Simpson hails from Illinois. His pieces are symbolic of an artist with a unique vision with their sense of play, steeped in the memories of his young years in middle America. According to Julie Feingold, Gallery Owner and Director, “Tommy’s work embodies everything that was beautiful about growing up in small-town America just after WWII. His furniture and sculptural pieces
are filled with old-fashioned ingenuity, a hefty imagination and original hand-craftmanship.” A Maine resident and master fine furniture artisan, Brian Reid is also featured at the Arundel Farm Gallery. Reid’s engineering mindset, artistry and skill result in designs that are made with a professionalism that includes traditional dovetail joinery and hand-rubbed oil finishes. With a passion to build custom furniture on any scale, his pieces often offer a lighter look at function. One such example is a jewelry chest, a treasure unto itself. At once sculptural and ingenious, the “Bleached Ice” jewelry chest features fresh water pearl drawer pulls and secret compartments. The Arundel Farm Gallery is located at 76 Arundel Road, Arundel and is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, go to www. arundelfarmgallery.com.
BERWICK Megan Murphy is an intern at Hackmatack Playhouse and a member of the cast of Mamma Mia! She has submitted this article to give readers an idea of what it’s like to perform at the Hackmatack Playhouse. The rehearsal barn is hot and sweaty. Actors repeat dance routines or sit patiently in plastic chairs with their hair pulled back and scripts in their laps, wishing that the 1600’s structure provided a convenient escape from the July humidity and evening mosquitos. The average rehearsal day is six to eight hours at the Playhouse in Berwick, sometimes relocating to the Rochester Performance & Arts Center when evening approaches. With only 18 days to produce a musical, crunch time is constant. Nonetheless, I look forward to each day I spend with my cast mates at the summer stock barn theater now in its fourth decade of producing shows. Originally from Dover, I am an upcoming sophomore at the University of New Hampshire, where I am majoring in communication and doubleminoring in musical theatre and arts administration At Hackmatack, I work as a communications and marketing intern, with responsibilities including marketing emails, ticket orders, the website and Instagram, and actor housing contracts. These days, however, I can be found performing with the cast of Mamma Mia!, running through Aug. 10. I was thrilled to find out that Kelli Leigh-Ann Connors would be directing this production, which features more than 25 songs by Swedish pop group ABBA. I have worked with Kelli before and know that she brings the perfect blend of professionalism and caring instinct to not only make valuable use of rehearsal time, but also to recognize the importance of actors

saving energy to stay healthy. The dressing room at Hackmatack is an unusual space. It is a large room divided by a center half-wall with a couple of couches, a washer and dryer, and a small corner bathroom. Near the entryway, props from past shows — kitchen supplies, rotary phones, typewriters — sit on shelves. A large stuffed cow hangs from the ceiling; massive signs advertising the Apollo, Coney Island, vintage advertisements, and the Cat in the Hat are on the walls. The show’s actors are wonderful both on stage and off. During breaks, we talk, laugh, play cards, or make food runs. We have also spent time together outside of rehearsal at a lake
house on Winnipesaukee for a relaxing afternoon on days off. Several performers are seasoned theatre veterans of several decades, many are college students, and a couple are recent high-school graduates. While this show is filled with memorable music, “Winner Takes It All” is a favorite. I was standing outside the rehearsal barn when I first heard Glenn Wixson pouring her heart and soul into this climactic ballad and knew right away that audience would be enthralled. Mamma Mia! will be at the Hackmatack Playhouse 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays through Aug. 10 with Thursday matinees at 2 p.m.

WELLS Little Girl is a beautiful shorthaired tiger and white kitty. She moved to Maine from the Pacific Northwest years ago. She’d been a feral kitty, rescued by a woman with lots of love, time and patience. Little Girl soon became trusting and loving. She eventually got a new mom and adjusted easily. She enjoyed lying across the woman’s chest at night, soaking in the love and security of a real home. But age and illness forced her devoted owner to surrender her to Safe Haven. It was a heartbreaking goodbye. Surrenders are always hard for everyone. After learning trust and loving her surroundings and owner, this “formerly feral” Little Girl now had to be brave all over again - but this time without her familiar home and devoted mom. Our team is good at replacing a previous devoted owner’s love, but let’s face it, there’s no place like home. So HOME is what we want for Little Girl. She’s the new kid, and so she’s not fully comfortable in her free-roaming cat room. When someone spends time with her it’s obvious she wants and needs someone to be her own. She deserves a quiet, safe, loving home where she can regain her confidence. At age 9, she’s a senior kitty so her adoption fees are waived, although a donation is appreciated. Please come and visit this sweet girl. She needs someone new to love and trust. Our shelter is open 11 a.m. 4 p.m. Tues-Sat. We always need clumping litter, canned Friskies and of course, volunteers. Our thrift shop is bursting with goodies! We always welcome lovely, useful items! FMI 207-646-1611. Please visit our GoFundMe at SafeHavenHumaneSociety.org. to help us with our new property. Thank You!

Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Cats have taken over AWS! In fact, more than 80 felines of every shape, size, color and age wait in the Adoption Center for you! Adoption fees are $175 for kittens and $75 for adults (and $10 for seniors). Can’t adopt but want to help? With this many mouths to feed, we are going through bags and cases of food daily and could use your help. We have found that feeding our resident pets a consistent diet of good quality food is important to their overall health and wellbeing. So if you’d like to help, we ask you to consider making your gift from our list of preferred brands: PurinaOne dry cat food (Indoor Advantage is best); Friskies, Whiskas or Fancy Feast canned cat food;

NORTH BERWICK Meet “Sudsy”! This sweet tuxedo boy is approximately 8-10 yrs old and came to us last April. Sudsy has waited very patiently for his furever home and would very much like to find a couple who understands he is a senior kitty but by no means “over the hill”. He is reserved when he first meets new people but quickly warms up, especially if you brush and pat him. He is a very sweet boy who would do best in a home with one other cat if gradual introductions were made. Dogs and children are an unknown. He just needs a soft landing and to know he is special and loved! Sudsy is current on all vetting and because of his age, his adoption fee is “by donation”. To meet “Sudsy” and other amazing kittens and cats, come by our Adoption Facility this Saturday, August 3 between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. To make an appointment to meet kitties at other times please contact Marilyn at 207-490-2855 or Amanda at 603-205-3615. Our thrift shop, open Wed. - Fri. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. is seeking donations of gently used, clean clothing, shoes, housewares and other unique items. Donations can be dropped off at 37 Market
St, North Berwick during shop hours only. Please do not leave items on the stoop after hours as they will get ruined by the weather or stolen. Contact Amanda to make drop-off arrangements to meet at an alternate time. We are still seeking volunteers to help expand our hours too! Monetary donations are needed to help us meet the needs of the cats and kittens currently in our care. Checks can be sent to PO Box 552, North Berwick ME 03996 or PayPal us at boomeredgewater@gmail.com. Every amount “helps us to help them”! Thank you for your support!

York Graduate Sends Winning Message to “Arrive Alive!”
YORK York High School graduate, Danielle O’Connell, won third-place in the 15th annual Arrive Alive Creative Contest sponsored by the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein. The contest asks students to come up with a creative message about the dangers of drinking and driving and/or distracted driving. Ms. O’Connell’s original song depicts how the decisions drivers make can both positively and negatively impact their lives as well as the lives of their family and friends. The York native was honored among the top 20 winners statewide at an award ceremony on June 13. The Arrive Alive Creative

AUGUSTA Governor Mills signed LD 997, “An Act to Promote Social and Emotional Learning and Development for Young Children,” into law. This legislation is designed to ensure childcare providers and educators have access to the support they need to help children in their classrooms manage challenging behaviors so they can remain and be successful. Through this legislation, a statewide voluntary program will be created, where early childhood mental health professionals will be available to educators and child care providers to work with children and parents to address difficult behaviors. Through this work, adults working with these children can get hands-on training and resources to help children correct problem behaviors and

Subject Matters: Sebastian Martorana in Sculpture Baltimore-based, contemporary artist Sebastian Martorana incisively carves stone sculptures which traverse a range of subjects. Working primarily in marble, Martorana charges the oldest of artistic disciplines with the concerns of a contemporary generation. Martorana embraces a direct approach to sculpture. He often works from observation, sculpting from life using tools fabricated to achieve the required effect over the surface of stone. Where elements of his work appear forthright and effortless, they are in fact the result of a skillful approach to artistic traditions, reveling in passages of texture, pattern, volume and form that are by turns humorous,

for all the children in the classroom. “We know from brain research conducted on young children the early years are crucial and lay the foundation for later development. While we often focus on whether children have the cognitive or language skills necessary for school, we must remember that children also need emotional and social skills if they are going to succeed in school or future employment,” Rita Furlow, Senior Policy Analyst at the Maine Children’s Alliance. “With this program, parents and early childhood teachers will be able to get the support they need to help these children develop the skills necessary to navigate through life.” ...CALENDAR from page 11

familiar and politically-charged. “Sebastian creates objects embedded with personal memory and reminiscence, as with all memorials, charges them with the ideals and politics of the times,” Executive Director and Chief Curator Michael Mansfield said. His 2008 work “White Plastic Bag Memorial” was a first attempt to create preemptive memorials — meaning memorials to something that will soon be gone,” he said. “They are, at the same time, praise for legislative movements to phase out the use of plastic bags and objects of reflection for the passing of the ‘plastic’ era. Physically, plastic bags and stone memorials share the same lifecycle, only differing greatly in their duration. At first, they both appear smooth, sparkling and shiny, but when left to the elements they begin to breakdown, lose their shine and become overlooked, just part of the background to passers by.” For more information, visit www.ogunquitmuseum.org.

SPORTS A Golf Legacy Lives On YORK A four-time club champion of the York Golf & Tennis Club, Ann Wilson inspired many of the women who now play in the annual golf tournament named in her honor. Born in York in 1918, Ann was an avid golfer known for her “deadly” short game, according to close friend and fellow club champion, Sally Blinn. She won the club championship in 1937 and 1938 and, impressively, again in 1973 and 1976 after she, and her husband Forbes Wilson, retired to York. Ann was thrilled to have a tournament held in her honor when the Ann Wilson Friendship Cup was established by her friends in 1998. The format of the tournament can change

enjoyed seeing her numerous friends. Ann Wilson’s love of the game has spread to generations of women golfers at York Golf & Tennis Club. Her spirit lives on in the bonds of friendships formed by so many who enjoy this wonderful game.
KENNEBUNK Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue in Kennebunk on Saturday, August 3. There will be a Skipper meeting at noon followed by sailing in the cove at 12:30 p.m. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti or Laser watercraft. A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. Kittery Doctor Helps Other Amputees in Ecuador KITTERY Susan Murray of Kittery, a mother, a physician and a lifelong athlete, found her tribe in Ecuador. Murray’s trip to Quito last month with her teenage daughter was focused on making prostheses for three amputees. Coincidentally, two of the patients had stories that resonated with her own experience of losing a leg and then an identity. “They were extremely athletic and after amputations they completely lost their selves and their identity,” said Murray, who traveled on a trip arranged by the nonprofit Range of Motion Project (ROMP). “Not until they came around a group of athletic amputees did they regain a sense of self.” ROMP, based in Colorado, hosts volunteers who want to help make prostheses for people who don’t have the resources or means to access them. In Guatemala and Ec-
uador, they have brought prostheses to people who never had them. The organization appealed to Murray, who practices medicine in Portsmouth, because it aims to not just provide prostheses, but also to offer role models to amputees so they can see the possibilities in their life, rather than the limitations. “Its whole philosophy is not to just bring prostheses to people, but to change their mobility,” she said. “It’s part of the organization’s goal is to get people moving and to be good role models for other amputees for what they can do.” On her 10-day trip to Ecuador, Murray learned of the similar transformations of 24-year-old Rodrigo and 36-year-old Wilson, two of her three patients. Rodrigo, she learned, was 16 and playing soccer with the national team when a lump was found in his leg. Within a year the leg was removed. “At 24, he found amputee soccer
Volunteers went to Ecuador with the Range of Motion Project, a non-profit based in Colorado that helps fit people with prostheses. Among the volunteers are Dr. Sue Murray (far left), her daughter, Livi Kozick, (fourth from left) and David Kruppa, the founder of the organization (third from the right)
and he has been playing since then.” Murray said. Wilson, a 36-year-old mechanical engineer, told Murray he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. Soon after, he lost his job as well. When he joined an amputee soccer team, where people play with crutches but no prostheses, he regained his interest in living, and stopped
hiding his leg. “The last day they changed Wilson’s prosthesis out for the running blade and you could see him just come to light,” Murray and the other volunteers spent days in the clinic, at first making plastic casts, then molds and ultimately fitting patients with their new prostheses. Each
volunteer had traveled with prosthetic parts that had been collected in ROMP’s Colorado warehouse for the patients they were assigned to help.By the trip’s end, Murray came to love each of three amputees and five other people in her volunteer group. Article Submitted by Amy Miller
