Pastor Jeff Patnaude

Passion For Music A Life-Long Journey

Pastor Jeffrey Patnaude of Ogunquit Baptist Church by the organ pipes at the front of the church. There is a dedicatory concert at the church on Sunday, August 5 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the newly refurbished organ.

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Music makes life worth living for Pastor Jeffrey Patnaude of the Ogunquit Baptist Church. It’s a blessing from God, he says, one that he’s savored since childhood in Farmington, Maine. It was there that he first learned he loved singing and went on to wow audiences as the star of such shows as Peter Pan, Pippin and Fanny at church and in school. “I loved singing — it was my thing. It’s a gift from God, and I feel blessed,” said the affable Patnaude. He moved on from musicals in Maine to majoring in opera at the University of Hart-

ford’s Hartt School of Music in Connecticut. “Pavarotti was big then, and I wanted to try it. Opera is amazing,” said Patnaude, a tenor like the late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. He sang as a church soloist at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, where he met his wife Mary Beth, who sang in the choir. They married out of college and went on to New York City, where he earned a master’s in vocal performance at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and she pursued a degree in occupational therapy at Columbia. After grad school, he sang professionally with Leiderkranz

“Woodies” Car Show and Parade WELLS The 7th Annual “Woodies in the Cove” Car Show & Parade will be held this year on August 11 (rain date August 12) from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the Historical Society on Route 1 (974 Post Road) in Wells. The parade will then go from there to Ogunquit and Perkins Cove. This event is the annual summer fundraiser for the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit and is also the largest Woodie event in New England

and possibly the entire East Coast. Last year’s event attracted 50 Woodies from all over New England, New York and from as far away as Virginia! The Woodies car show is important to the Historical Society to be more self-sufficient and to succeed into the future. Opera Theatre and Brandenburg Opera. “It was fun singing for two companies and living in New York,” he said. He also worked as a computer technician, which led to his call to the ministry. “I listened to Christian radio in my car and felt God calling me. I asked my brother-in-law, a priest, ‘how do you know if you’re being called?’ He said, ‘sometimes you just have to try it,’ “ he recalled. The Patnaudes, who then had a 1-year-old, the first of their five sons, decided to give it a try in 2000, moving from Manhattan to Gordon-Conwell Seminary in Wenham, Massachusetts. They’ve never looked back. Music is still a huge part of Patnaude’s life. He loves sharing it with his congregations, including his first at the West Harpswell Baptist Church in the midcoast region and in Ogunquit for 11 years. Patnaude presides over a dedicatory concert at the church on Sunday, August 5 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the recently refurbished organ. Internationallyacclaimed organist Dr. Joyce Jones, a music professor and organist in residence at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, will perform. Faucher Organ Company of Biddeford handled the

of the 300 families who are served every month by this volunteer organization. Started almost 20 years ago by the New Covenant Baptist Church to respond to 5 families, it now is an independent food bank operating out of the Mary Hurd Academy at 77 High Street (Route 4). The space was designated to the pantry three years ago by the School District when the church was no longer able to accommodate the larger food shipments and growing number of clients. In addition to the increasingly strained family finances of its clients, it’s easy to see why this particular Food Pantry is so popular. To register, you need only to give your contact information

and number of members in your family. As a client, you walk through the pantry with a volunteer who tells you how much your family is allotted and helps you select those items that are appealing. This process both allows for client selection and increases the odds that food products are not wasted. Your food is bagged for you and delivered by volunteers to your vehicle. You can come monthly for any food that is available and weekly for produce and bread products. In addition to these advantages, the volunteers are dedicated to good service. They strive to be friendly and accommodating. They sort, stock and clean with determination, and are thankful

Lillibridge, has returned this summer as interim priest during August and September at the historic St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal, 535 Shore Road in Cape Neddick. Rev. Lillibridge and his wife, Catherine, are here for the seventh season at St. Peter’s. They will reside in the historic rectory aside the church known as the Marmion House. BERWICK Berwick artist Jessica Pendergast will have her artwork on display at the Berwick Public Library through August. Jessica is a single mother of two boys and works as a server in Rochester. Although she took art classes in high school, she has mostly developed her craft on her own. Jessica works with acrylics to make her artwork. Most paintings are palette knife paintings and purely expressive. She likes to build colors, use textures, and even add some reflective pigments to really make the textures stand out.

I like a variety of colors but especially love using vibrant colors. According to Jessica, her inspiration comes from her feelings, children, and life in general. A Trio of Exhibits for Mid-Summer YORK Stepping into the George Marshall Store Gallery one is immediately “at ease amongst Barbara Sullivan’s shaped fresco chairs and select works by nine other regional artists. The tile and theme of the current exhibition, “At Ease is inspired by Sullivan’s creations. She learned the fresco technique while she was the head cook at The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1989. She embraced the medium and is well known for her shaped frescoes of ordinary household objects and animals. Her nine “chairs hang like paintings throughout the gallery and are complemented by Grant Drumheller’s oil on linen interiors that capture the light and mood of a Maine summer cottage and Boston based artist, Carole Rabe’s interiors using collaged colored paper. The bold greens and cool blues of Amy Brnger’s large-scale paintings, “Birthday Picnic and “Dog Day Afternoon visually tie in with the decorative patterns on Sullivan’s Chairs, and one cannot help but be charmed by the humor in Gordon Carlisle’s collages that use vintage magazine clippings. Always popular, are the wall and stand-alone sculptures by Portsmouth artist Michael Stasiuk, who is the master of “the found object assemblage. Also included is a series by Tom Glover, Michael Walek’s reclining figures in gouache, and Stuart Ober’s illuminated interiors.

“Growing Up, acrylic on 24 x 24 canvas by Ann Trainor Domingue.

“Time and Again, Paintings and Drawings by Maine artist George Lloyd, is on display in the river view Gallery. Spanning from the early 1970’s through his career in New England and Maine, these are energetic works that combine bold mark-making strokes with large washes of color. Several paintings are being exhibited for the first time. Others have been included in past exhibitions, however they have endured the test of time and seem as fresh and relevant as the day they were made. The dock level gallery features the work of New Hampshire artist Ann Trainor Domingue. She intentionally works in an unexpected manner to develop her colorful, graphic and narrative paintings. These qualities indeed come “Shining Through in this new body of work inspired by her longstanding curiosity and attraction of waterfront life. matinee performance, Sunday, August 12, at 2 p.m., in the gardens at Historic New England’s Hamilton House. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s classic tale, The 39 Steps is a fast-paced ride through the signature world of the Master of Suspense, presented by Radio Mystery Theatre complete with period actors, vintage-style commercials, sound effects, and the twists and turns of this romantic thriller. The production features area actors Phil Adams, Bob Boucher, Holly Brown, Jewel Beth Davis, Randy Hunt, Paula Louise King, and Shaune McCarthy. “There’s the fun of the radio play, seeing the live sound effects and the jingles, Marilyn Keith Daly, Historic New England South Berwick Site Manager said, “and then the great fun of seeing five actors play several

different roles, creating characters with their voices—this was radio after all. Keith Daly added, “This production is a little different than the show that was on Broadway a few years ago, Marilyn Keith Daly, “in that ours was written as a radio play, and really showcases the story in this way. The production was made possible in part by a Maine Arts and Humanities Grant, a partnership between the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission and by a donation from The Fabulous Find

A Fellow of the American Guild of Organists, Dr. Jones retired in August 2012 after 43 years as the Joyce Oliver Bowden Professor of Music and Organist in Residence at Baylor University. She has continued to play concerts, while also devoting more time to composing, traveling with her husband, and gardening. Dr. Jones’ numerous engagements include such venues as the Riverside Church, the Mormon Tabernacle, Notre Dame Cathedral, Chartres Cathedral, and the Meyerson Symphony Center. She was the first woman to perform on the organ at the Crystal Cathedral, the first organist to play for the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the only woman organist chosen to play with the San Francisco

Symphony Orchestra at the inauguration of the Ruffatti organ in Davies Symphony Hall. She has been featured soloist at many regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists. When she plays in Ogunquit, she will be arriving after playing two benefit concerts in Brattleboro, Vermont, marking the completion of having played concerts in all 50 states, as well as 12 foreign countries. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Alice in Wonderland at Hackmatack BERWICK Eleven-year-old Nolan Young of North Berwick plays a friendly, happy caterpillar in one scene and a rather timid king in another scene of “Alice in Wonderland, showing this week at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. “The caterpillar is more about having fun and being yourself, said Nolan, “but the king is more shy and like ‘you do all the action and I’ll sit down and watch.’ Like actors of all ages, Young really loves jumping into different characters. “I like getting to not be yourself for a day or two or a week or something, said Nolan, one of about a dozen campers who will get to play two or even three roles in Alice, showing 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug 3 and 4. After five weeks of rehearsal at Hackmatack camp, “Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. will feature children between 7 and 13 on stage singing, dancing and doing their best to inhabit the bottom of the rabbit hole. Camp director Christopher Gempp chose this show because of the lively characters and the chance for children to really get into developing their roles. “I selected Alice in Wonderland because of the unique characters, said Gempp, who teaches at Timberlane Middle School during the year and is now in his second year directing “Hack-ma-camp. “Last year they really enjoyed the distinct characters in Treasure Island so

I wanted campers to have the chance again to develop unique characters. Sarah Hashem of North Berwick, who plays woodwinds in the pit for Hackmatack’s main stage, is the camp’s musical director. A senior at University of Southern Maine, Hashem has also played in the orchestra pit for the Rochester Opera House, Prescott Park Arts Festival, Schoolhouse Arts Center, Stages Youth Theater, University of Southern Maine, and several public schools. Gempp and Hashem added an extra week of camp this year so they could slow the pace of rehearsals, and give campers time to design and create costumes and props. There are so many characters in this tale, that the actors each play multiple roles, except, the actors who play the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat. In

this version there are three different Alices who change throughout the play as Alice changes height. “We talked about developing certain motions and characteristics, such as Alice’s attitude throughout to keep it consistent, Gempp said. Children playing more than one role had to learn how to distinguish between their parts.“We talked about how to be different characters and act differently on stage depending on who you were, said Gempp. While Young was asked to inhabit two very different characters, 11-year- old Andrea Marshall of Berwick had to play two parts that have a good amount in common - the Queen of Hearts and Alice’s sister, Matilda. “The queen when I think of her is really obnoxious and loud and Matilda is really bossy so they have some things in common, said Marshall, a veteran of four plays at her school. “But they also same parts different. The big difference is that the Queen is royal and Matilda is not so I have to act regal and like I’m everything. For more information, call 207-698-1807 or go the website t www.hackmatack.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I have been getting your email for years and enjoy all your knowledge. Thank you. My question: I use aol for my email. I have noticed for about the past month on all emails I sent, my email address is preceded with FedEx. I do not know how this happened, but I cannot figure out how to change. I did go to mail settings, but it only has my email address. Something seems a little odd. Thanks, Barbara Hi Barbara, I will have to say, that I almost deleted your email thinking it was a scam because it said, “FedEx in the title. The setting to change the “From name should be in the same settings where the email address is. Since you did not change

this setting, and you don’t see it listed in the settings, I wonder if someone is using your AOL to send phishing messages. I would change the password for your AOL email, and then make sure your computer is not infected with any malware or viruses. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have loved your newsletter for many years and found it so helpful, though am no way a senior citizen techie! Or do I need to buy the latest Word edition to accomplish my mission? Thank you very much for your attention and I so appreciate any help that you can offer. Blessings and peace, Shirl Dear Shirl, Editing a PDF document is not always possible, it depends on how the document was created in the first place, and what you have for software on your computer. If the PDF document was created by scanning the original document, then it is most likely an image and not able to be edited no matter what type of program you have on your computer. If the PDF document was created in a word processing program like Word,

then you can edit it if you have the right program. Since PDF documents are actually adobe documents, you can edit them with Adobe Acrobat. Adobe Acrobat is not free, but since it is sold as a subscription, if you only have one or two documents that you need to edit, you should be able to purchase a one month subscription ($22 at acrobat. adobe.com) and get the work done. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I discovered too late my laptop, HP Pavillion, was not charging the battery. Now it won’t turn on and stay on. Lights indicate on but then immediately go out. Where do I go from here as the battery is only a little over 6 months old. I usually use it plugged in rather than battery power. Thanks, Ellyn Dear Ellyn, A fairly common problem with laptops is that the connection where you plug in the power cord becomes damaged, but before we jump to conclusions lets look and make sure there isn’t something simple going on. First, check the power to the laptop. Make sure it is plugged into a working outlet, check the cords for wear or damage, and try a different outlet. Next, take the battery out of your laptop, plug in the cord and see if the computer will start without the battery. Most laptops will run fine with the battery removed as long as you have it plugged in. If the laptop still won’t start up, there is probably damage at the connection. If your computer is still under warranty, contact the company, if not, you will need to find a computer shop that does that kind of repair. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Health & Fitness Maine Leads the Way for National Smokefree Public Housing Rule AUGUSTA In 2012, Maine became the first state to have 100 percent of public housing authorities adopt smokefree rules for their approximately 4,000 units. Today, the nation followed its lead, thanks to a new smokefree housing rule from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) protecting residents of public housing throughout the country from secondhand smoke. The American Lung Association applauded the new rule, which recognizes the serious health threat posed by secondhand smoke, and its ability to linger in rooms and even travel between homes in multi-unit housing. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy life, and ensuring homes are free from the risks of secondhand smoke is a critical step for the health of residents,” said Jeff Seyler, Chief Division Officer of the American Lung Association. “This is especially true for children and those who are more vulnerable to the impact of secondhand smoke, such as those living with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Thanks to the work of an incredible local coalition, Maine set an important example for the nation on this issue, and we can thank them for helping to chart a healthier course for the country.” In November 2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a rule

A Community Call – Opioid Crisis Response

requiring all federally-owned public housing to become smokefree by July 30, 2018. This rule will protect close to two million Americans nationwide from being exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, including 690,000 children. The American Lung Association celebrates this longawaited health protection, following more than a decade of advocacy for the passage of the rule as well as support for the implementation of smokefree housing policies in local public housing authorities. In Maine, the Breathe Easy Coalition was funded through a grant by the Partnership for a Tobacco-Free Maine (Maine Department of Health & Human Service Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine DHHS/CDC). This funding allowed the Breathe Easy Coalition (of which the American Lung Association was an Executive Committee Member) to work cooperatively with the 20 local public health agencies to adopt voluntary smokefree policies. “Maine has been a strong leader on expanding smokefree housing. We proved it could work for landlords and for residents, decreasing costs while positively impacting people’s health and quality of life. We were an early adopter and a successful pilot project demonstrating both the economic and health value of smokefree public housing.” said Lance Boucher, Senior Director of State Advocacy – Eastern Division for the American Lung Association. Secondhand smoke exposure poses serious health threats to both children and adults.

KENNEBUNK Churches of the Kennebunks and the Kennebunk Police Department, in partnership with Portland Public Health, will offer an informational and training opportunity for local community members to understand the extent of the opioid crisis in Maine and develop a supportive response. This program will be held on Wednesday, August 8, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Storer Street, Kennebunk. The first part of the evening will feature a presentation by Kennebunk Police Chief Damaging health effects in children and adults include lung cancer, respiratory infections, worsened asthma symptoms, heart attacks and stroke. For residents of multi-unit housing (e.g., apartment buildings and condominiums), secondhand smoke can be a major concern even if people don’t smoke in your unit, as smoke can migrate from other units and common areas and travel through doorways, cracks in walls, electrical lines, plumbing, and ventilation systems. Health & Fitness New Medicare Cards are Arriving in Maine Mailboxes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is mailing new Medicare cards to protect the safety and security of people with Medicare benefits. The new Medicare cards no longer contain a person’s Social Security number, but rather a unique, randomly-assigned Medicare number that protects the identities of people with Medicare reduces fraud and offers better safeguards of important health and financial information. “Removing Social Security numbers from Medicare cards is one of the many ways CMS is committed to putting patients first and improving the consumer healthcare experience,” said Ray Hurd,

Regional Administrator for the Boston and New York Regional Offices of CMS. “This change not only protects Medicare patients from fraud, but also safeguards taxpayer dollars by making it harder for criminals to use Social Security numbers to falsely bill Medicare for care services and benefits that were never performed.” Work on this important initiative was made possible by the enactment of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). CMS began mailing the new Medicare cards to people who currently have Medicare benefits in Maine this week. Additionally, people who are new to Medicare in Maine started

to receive their new Medicare cards in April along with others across the country when the mailing first began. As soon as people receive their new Medicare card, they should safely and securely destroy their old Medicare card and keep their new Medicare number confidential. Our current mailing strategy allows us to complete the mailings of new cards to all people with Medicare, both new and current enrollees, over the next year. The new Medicare card will not change any of the program benefits and services that eligible people enrolled in Medicare receive. People with Medicare and their care-

givers can visit medicare.gov/ newcard to find out when new Medicare cards will be mailed to their area. They can also sign up for email notifications about the new card mailing and check the status in their state. Healthcare providers, suppliers and people with Medicare will be able to use secure look up tools that allow quick access to the new Medicare numbers when needed. There will also be a 21-month transition period for healthcare providers and suppliers to use either the former Social Security-based Medicare number or the new Medicare number to ensure a seamless transition. As the new Medicare

cards are being mailed, people with Medicare should look out for scams and follow these tips: Medicare will never contact you for your Medicare number or other personal information so you can obtain your new Medicare card. Don’t pay for your new Medicare card. It’s free. If anyone calls or approaches you and says you need to pay for it, that’s a scam. Guard your card. When you get your new card, safeguard it like you would health insurance or credit cards. Only give your new Medicare Number to doctors, pharmacists, other health care providers, your insurers, or people you trust to work with Medicare on your behalf.

Summer fun routinely involves days spent soaking up some of the sun’s rays. Relaxing days at the beach, barbecues in the backyard or picnics at the park can make for fun summer activities that create lasting memories. While spending time in the great outdoors is a great way to take advantage of summer weather, it’s important that revelers take steps to prevent sunburn when spending days beneath the hot summer sun. Sunburns may seem temporary, but the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that sunburn can cause longlasting skin damage. In addition, the SCF notes that a person’s risk for melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, doubles if

he or she has had more than five sunburns. It can take several hours to notice the full damage of a sunburn, though some people may notice mild symptoms of sunburn more quickly than that. The SCF recommends that people get out of the sun at the first sign of sunburn, and then take the following steps to treat their skin. Cool the skin down quickly. People sitting near cool water, whether it’s the ocean or a backyard pool, should take a quick dip to cool their skin. Make this dip quick so your skin is not further exposed to the sun. After taking a dip, cover up your skin and get out of the sun, continuing to cool the

skin with a cold compress. Do not apply ice directly to sunburned skin. Some people may want to take a cool shower or bath after suffering a sunburn. While that’s alright, the SCF recommends keeping the bath or shower short, as long baths or showers can dry the skin, and avoiding harsh soap that can be irritating. Moisturize skin while it’s still damp. Apply a gentle moisturizing lotion while the skin is still damp, and continue doing so to affected areas for a few days. Avoid petroleum- or oil-based ointments, as they can trap the heat and make burns worse. See SUNBURN page 19...

Health & Fitness When is Clumsiness A Cause For Concern? Who hasn’t tripped over his own feet or knocked over a water glass on a table? No one is immune to the occasional clumsiness, but some people may grow concerned that their bouts of clumsiness are becoming more frequent. For healthy people, bumping into a wall when misjudging a corner or dropping silverware on the floor is often a minor, isolated incident. Lack of concentration or multitasking often may be to blame. In 2007, Professor Charles Swanik and a research team at the University of Delaware studied athletes to discover why some seem to be more injury prone than others. Researchers found that clumsy athletes’ brains seemed to have

“slowed processing speed,” which referred to how their brains understand new information and respond to it. But clumsiness also can be a sign of a bigger issue at play, namely motor problems within the brain. According to Taylor Harrison, MD, clinical instructor in the neuromuscular division of Emory University, coordination of the body is complicated and tied to both motor and senory systems. That means the eyes, brain, nerves, cerebellum, which specializes in coordination and balance, muscles, and bones must work together. Clumsiness can result from stroke, seizure disorders, brain trauma or the presence of tumors,

and other conditions. Healthline also says that clumsiness may be an early symptom of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s affects the central nervous system and can impair motor skills. Alzheimer’s slowly damages and kills brain cells and may cause issues with coordination. This may be the case with other dementias as well. Clumsiness may sometimes result from a lack of sleep or overconsumption of alcohol. Arthritis also can lead to clumsiness when joint pain and restrictive movements make it challenging to get around. Psychologists may suggest cognitive behavioral therapy or propose performing tasks with

more mindfulness to reduce clumsiness. If that doesn’t work, men and women should visit their physicians, who can conduct tests to rule out certain things and provide

peace of mind. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

...SUNBURN from page 18 Decrease inflammation. A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) like aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen can help sunburned men and women manage the pain and discomfort associated with their sunburns. Symptoms such as redness and swelling may be mitigated with a 1 percent over-the-counter cortisone cream applied as directed for a few days. Wear the right clothing. Tight clothing can rub up against sunburned skin and irritate it even further. Until sunburned skin returns to normal, wear loose, soft and breathable clothing to keep irritation to a minimum. Make a conscious effort to stay hydrated. Sunburns draw fluid to the surface of skin, taking it away from the rest of the body. So it’s important that men and women who have suffered a sunburn make a conscious effort to drink more fluids until their skin heals so they can avoid becoming dehydrated. Report severe sunburns to a physician. Symptoms of severe sunburn include blistering of the skin, fever, chills, wooziness, and/or feelings of confusion. Report such symptoms to a physician immediately, and avoid popping blisters, as doing so can lead to infection. Sunburns can always be avoided. Men, women and children planning to spend time in the sun should take every measure to avoid sunburn, which can produce long-lasting damage to the skin. Workplace Gifting Etiquette: Get Giving Right Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. • Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions

and other scented items are also ill-advised. • Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. • Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. • Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the

receiving end of a lavish gift. • Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. • Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable. Gifting at work is complicated, and certain etiquette should be followed so no lines are crossed. AUGUSTA The Maine summer real estate sales season is in full swing and according to the Maine Association of RealtorsŽ, RealtorsŽ around the state sold 1,937 single-family existing homes in June 2018, an increase of 2.54 percent over June 2017. Home values experienced double-digit gains, with a 10.98 percent jump in the median sales price to $227,500. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “It’s been a strong year for much of Maine and inventory is moving quickly, says Kim

Gleason, 2018 President of the Maine Association of RealtorsŽ and Broker/Owner of McAllister Real Estate in Hallowell. “The number of sales during the first six months of 2018 are nearly 2 percent ahead of the first six months of 2017, which was Maine’s best ever. In some areas of Maine, the markets are tight—multiple offers are prevalent, and prices show upward pressure. “Maine real estate continues to be a great investment, and those thinking of buying or selling need to consult early on with a RealtorsŽ who is knowledgeable of the local area for the best strategy and successful outcome, adds Gleason.

moving expenses, while 21 percent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed necessary. One in five companies even sponsored trips to search for homes. Adults who are offered relocation packages should get the specifics so they can start creating moving budgets. • Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process. • Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that

Moving can be a considerable undertaking. While working professionals who are single or married with no children may find it easier to move than men and women with families, it’s fair to say that anyone who is moving in the near future has some significant work ahead of them. In its Job Relocation Survey, the moving company Allied Van Lines found that people move for a variety of reasons. Fifty percent of the 3,500 respondents indicated they relocated for career advancement or money, and many more indicated they relocated because of a job transfer (12 percent), their companies moved (9 percent) and to be closer to family/relationships

(8 percent). Regardless of what’s motivating men and women to relocate, and whether or not they’re relocating on their own or uprooting their families, various strategies can make a forthcoming move go more smoothly. • Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates. • Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from company to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered

BUSINESS & FINANCE Networking Strategies For The Digital Age

Networking has long been a way for men and women to expand their professional horizons. Networking can keep professionals abreast of the latest goings-on in their industries and provide both immediate and long-term benefits. Like many things in the business world, how people network has changed in the digital age. Embracing that change and making it work for you will likely involve changing how you network. • Embrace professional social media. Social media may not have been around the last time you looked for a job, but professional social media sites such as LinkedIn are a vital component of networking in the digital age. If you haven’t done so already, establish a LinkedIn profile so you can begin connecting with other professionals in your field. • Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the ...RELOCATE from page 20 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for dayto-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful. person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections. • Get out of the house. Digital age networking is not limited to digital connections. Meetup. com encourages like-minded men and women to get together

with real people in real life, using the internet to facilitate such connections. Men and women who sign up can use Meetup. com to connect with local professionals in their industries, attend industry-specific events and even establish their own meetup groups. A medium such as Meetup.com is great for individuals of all ages, but it might be especially valuable to established professionals looking to combine digital age networking with the more traditional networking

they’re accustomed to. • Be mindful of decorum. The internet is a largely informal “place,” but professionals should be mindful of decorum when networking online. Resist the temptation to use shorthand, slang or less formal language when contacting other professionals, as doing so can make you appear unprofessional. In addition, avoid making potentially controversial or contentious comments on social media platforms like Facebook and

Twitter. Networking in the digital age may intimidate working professionals accustomed to more traditional networking strategies. But while the methods may be different, effective digital age networking is not all that different from the networking strategies of yesteryear. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by thirdparty sources.

The Basics of Credit Scores and Credit Reports As consumers, we know that having a good credit score is important. Whether you are applying for a loan or signing up for a credit card, your credit score plays a major role in determining if you will be approved. Your credit score can also have a significant impact on loan terms and borrowing costs. What is a credit score? When you borrow money from a lender or sign a contract pledging to make payments, the other party needs to assess how likely it is that you will fulfill your obligations. Your credit score is a measure of risk that helps lenders quantify this likelihood in real time. Credit scores also help to make the credit process more efficient. In order to make a decision about whether to lend money, a lender needs to gather a great deal of information. The credit score speeds up this pro-

cess immensely by giving the lender a quantifiable measure without having to collect all the data. In addition, the efficiency of using credit scores does a lot to increase the amount of credit available, which in turn pushes down the cost of credit to consumers. Types of credit scores The FICO® Score, created by the Fair Isaac Corporation, is the most commonly used credit measure. Although in this article we focus on FICO, you should be aware that other scores—for example, VantageScore and PLUS Score—evaluate credit worthiness using their own methodologies. A consumer’s base FICO Score ranges from 300 to 850— the higher the consumer’s score, the lower his or her risk to lenders. During the past 25 years, the base FICO Score has undergone many revisions, and the scoring meth-

odology has evolved to account for new data points. Currently, the most widely used measure is the FICO 8 Score. (Fair Isaac has several other scores whose methodology is specific to the type of lending decision being evaluated. For instance, a bank may use a

different FICO Score for mortgage lending than it does for making decisions about issuing credit cards.) How a FICO Score is calculated When a consumer obtains See SCORE page 26...

YORK For nearly two decades, White Pine Programs has been running year-round nature connection programs in southern Maine and beyond. As a nonprofit that mostly serves youth with character-building programs outdoors, White Pine is used to challenges and change. “Nature is Always Teaching - even when it comes to growing our organization.” said co-founder Dan Gardoqui. KCM Celebrates National Farmers’ Market Week

KITTERY As demand for local food continues to grow, so too have the opportunities for America’s farmers to market fresh food directly to the consumer. According to statistics recently released by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), farmers’ markets and farm stands account for roughly $2 billion of the $3 billion that Americans spend annually on farm-direct products. This revenue, in turn, supports the livelihoods of more than 165,000 mostly small and mid-sized farms and ranches. Kittery Community Market (KCM) joins markets across the country in celebrating National Farmers Market Week from August 5-11. There will be kid’s activities hosted by market favorite Brixham Montessori Friends School, musical guests, raffle and more on Sunday, August 5, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 10 Shapleigh Road, Kittery. The Kittery Community Market began in 2013, and currently hosts eleven farmers selling a wide variety of products,

including fresh local produce, seasonal flowers, blueberries, charcuterie, cheese, locally caught seafood and pasture raised meats. In the most recent season, Kittery Community Market generated a 30 percent increase in sales for these local producers, a valuable economic boost for the region. “Farmers markets play a vital role not just in generating real income for farmers, but in forming a healthy, prosperous food systems,” says Jen Cheek, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “By providing the opportunity for farmers to connect directly with consumers, markets serve as education centers. Vendors are teaching customers about agriculture and sharing recipes and new foods with their neighbors. Markets are making people and communities stronger and healthier.” The Kittery Community Market, a 501(c)3, has been formed to provide healthy fresh foods, horticultural products, local prepared foods and local

credit, the lender reports the information to the three major U.S. credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The information then goes into the individual’s credit report, which provides the raw data used to calculate the credit score. The credit report includes the consumer’s personal information (e.g., date of birth, social security number), all of his or her account information, information about credit inquiries, and negative information such as bankruptcies and late payments. For calculating an individual’s credit score, the FICO formula looks at five primary categories of information: The consumer’s total amount of debt; The comartisans’ works to Kittery and surrounding areas, and to encourage commerce, entertainment, and trade. Kittery Community Market accepts SNAP/ EBT with a $1 bonus match for every $1 spent! They also accepting WIC for organic produce. Kittery Community Market farmers donate produce to local Footprints Food Pantry as well.

bination of different types of accounts; The consumer’s history of making payments on time; How old the consumer’s credit history is; The amount of new credit applied or shopped for. Although some categories like payment history and amount of debt are more heavily weighted in determining the FICO Score, the relative importance of a category can be affected by the aggregated information in the consumer’s credit report. Improving and maintaining your credit score Now that you understand what goes into calculating a credit score and why the score is so important, let’s look at some strategies for improving, maintaining, and protecting your score. It all starts with an initial check of your credit report. Consumers may request their credit report once a year from each credit bureau. There is no cost to request the three reports, and they can be obtained easily online through www.annualcreditreport.com. Once you receive your reports, check them diligently for accuracy. Cross-reference them with each other to be sure that

the information is correct across the three bureaus. If you find inaccurate information—especially incorrect negative information—contact the credit bureaus to dispute the data. Here are some additional tips for improving your credit score: Do your best to keep balances on credit cards low compared with your total available credit line. High balances can hurt your credit score. Create a system to ensure that you pay your bills in a timely fashion. Consistently paying bills on time will have a positive effect on your score. Do not move debt around to avoid payments. Work on a system to pay down debt rather than move it. Use credit cards, but use them properly and pay on time. Lenders want to see a track record that demonstrates your ability to manage debt responsibly. If you are looking to obtain a loan, shop around within a short period of time. If you spread your search out over a long time frame, lenders may infer that you are shopping for many credit See CREDIT page 27...

Fifty-two years together blessed Bob and Jeanne with three daughters: Rachel Baron, Rebecca Isaacs, and Penny Gould and also with six grandchildren: Justin Rogers, Joshua Rogers, Samantha Morrill, Zachary Gould, Thomas Isaacs, and Addison Gould. Bob loved his wife and daughters but was “all about his grandkids. He coached baseball, umpired bases, drank at tea parties, built with Legos, gave scooter rides, snuggled in his chair, and never missed a softball game or cheering competition. ...TOTO from page 10 recovery efforts, an unknown tree worker brought little Toto to the Brimfield, MA, Fire Station, where Jonathan Hall was on duty with Brimfield Ambulance. Hall and other EMS personnel cared for Toto throughout the day. Toto was taken to the Animal Rescue League of Boston facility where, despite being critically ill from his tornado ordeal, was cared for and nursed back to health. Veterinarians who evaluated Toto felt that he was only 2 to 3 weeks old at the time he was found. That August, Jonathan’s wife, Amy, surprised him and adopted Toto from the ARL. Toto had returned to Brimfield, where he belonged.

It was from this amazing story that Jonathan Hall wrote his first children’s book, “Toto the Tornado Kitten” about Toto’s adventure. Toto and Jonathan Hall will be at the Berwick Public Library Tuesday, August 7 at 2 p.m. The Berwick Public Library is located at 103 Old Pine Hill Road. Please bring a pet food donation for a local shelter.

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS Diamond and Daisy were adopted from Safe Haven years ago but their owner’s housing situation changed recently, so she had to return them. They’re now back at Safe Haven’s adoption center and settling in nicely. Each is about 6 years old, beautiful and long haired. As an alpha male, Diamond intimidates Daisy. It’s unfortunate, but obviously they’ll be happier living apart, so we’re placing them into separate homes. Diamond got his name for the diamond patch on his face. Daisy sports a glamorous, allblack look. Both are friendly, and eagerly seek out attention and affection. They’ll be happiest in quiet homes with no children or perhaps older children. Each will be a perfect companion if you’re seeking a new friend who simply wants peace, quiet and love. Perhaps you? Can you spare 2-3 hours a week. Safe Haven needs additional cat-caregivers to lend a hand. Join a fun team who shares your love of animals! You’ll help with cleaning and comforting, making sure everyone’s fed, their bedding is fluffy and the toys are

dispersed. Then you get to stand back and admire your accomplishment as you watch kitties enjoy the fruits of your labor; spotless rooms, colorful blankies, and purring cats. Some people think it’s depressing to volunteer at a shelter. Not ours! First, our cats are not confined to cages. They roam freely in uncrowded homelike rooms with big sunny windows that look out onto bird feeders. Huge windows also look out into the hallway and into the room next door, and every cat room door is glass. There’s comfortable seating in our catrooms where visitors can relax, cuddle with a cat, or play. It’s not uncommon to see a volunteer snoozing with a kitty curled up on their lap or under their chin. One room actually has a real bed, in case a volunteer wants to stay overnight to keep an eye on a sick kitty, for example. It’s much like a home environment. In fact, we consider it our “haven as well. Call us at 207-646-1611 for details.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK At Another Chance, we often take on cats and kittens that are in the worst of health conditions and while we typically are able to handle most situations that comes our way, such as the “Eye Kittens and the rest of the 20 or so cats that came in from the same overwhelmed home this past winter. However, we’re now faced with two critical cats at once whose medical needs are financially maxing us out – We need help financially and fast! We are desperately trying to raise a total of $8,300 of which we’ve already raised $7,500 so far. We’re asking our generous donors to dig deep and “help us to help them. Our most critical need is to help us cover emergency surgery that had to take place on our recent intakes: Stone, an 8-year-old male DLH buff ginger pictured at top to the right), was found in Berwick badly injured and blind. The root of his injuries initially were uncertain by our vet but x-rays revealed he was hit by a

car. Stone has had to undergo two minor surgeries and one major one to reposition his organs that were all displaced from the trauma into his chest cavity. We are thrilled to report that the surgery was a complete success and Stone, while he has a long recovery ahead, is expected to make a full one! He will remain blind most likely, but he and we are ok with this as he is already adapting to his lack of vision. Meanwhile he purrs, loves the attention he is receiving, and loves to be held and cuddled. Lady Jane, an “Elderfur DLH gray and white fluffy girl (pictured also) whose story was featured on WCSH’s “207 newsmagazine show on Friday, July 27, is a 17.5-yearold stray that came to us at the end of June after being rescued from the South Berwick/Eliot border. Shes had to have a surgical feeding tube put in due to a throat abrasion she had upon

arrival that inhibited this poor sweet girl’s ability to eat. Her vet bills and ongoing care have only added to the mounting vet bills, but to see her now eat on her own, dance in place purring and doling out head bonks to all, reminds us of why we do all we can to save these sweet kitties! Her story is one that should be made into a book. Check out the highlights online at WCSH’s “207 program website! This is where when they say “it takes a village they’re not kidding. We need help to cover See RESCUE page 34...

Emma’s Angels The Grateful Dog Animal Rescue KITTERY Apple and Peaches are 3 year old bonded sisters we rescued from the south, and we cannot separate! NORTH BERWICK Louis is a one year old sleek back cat who is a sweetheart. He is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. He came all the way from a shelter in Louisiana with six other cats and kittens – A very lucky boy! He would like a nice window seat to lounge the days away. Hunter is a 3-year-old Shepherd/Hound mix who is good with other dogs, Neutered and current on his vaccinations. Hunter loves to go on walks and can also be a snuggler. If you would like a meet and greet with either pet give us a call 207-676-5599. Join us for our 5th annual Emma’s Run and Giant Yard Sale ON August 4, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Hanna’s, Route 4 Sanford. We still need canned Friskies cat food for our many cats and kittens. If you can donate call us for pick up. It can also be left in our drop box at 30 Meeting House Road, North Berwick, and thank you!

The Basics of Beach Volleyball Getting sand beneath one’s toes takes on an entirely new meaning where beach volleyball is concerned. In fact, beach volleyball players spend much of their time getting up close and personal with sand while diving for balls and spiking across the net. The precise origins of beach volleyball are not entirely known. Some accounts trace volleyball’s origins to 1915 in Hawaii, well after the indoor game originated in Massachusetts. But others insist beach volleyball began in Santa Monica, Calif., in the early 1920s. Regardless of its exact origins, beach volleyball began as a way for families to have fun at the beach. Volleyball was a diversion during the Great Depression, and a popular and inexpensive form of entertainment. Beach volleyball ultimately became a competitive sport and is now featured in the Summer Olympics. The objective of beach volleyball is for a player to hit the ball over the net so that it lands in the opponent’s playing area. Each team consists of two players and is allowed a maximum of three hits to return the ball to the opponent’s side. A player cannot make contact with the ball two

consecutive times. The Fédéracion Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) is the international governing body for the sport. The FIVB publishes the Official Beach Volleyball Rules every four years, as approved by the FIVB congress, which provides the framework for how beach volleyball is played internationally. The volleyball court is rectangular and made of sand that is leveled and cleared of potential hazards. It is slightly smaller than an indoor court. The ball is made of a flexible and waterresistant material that is appropriate for outdoor conditions. The volleyball used in beach volleyball is slightly larger than that used in indoor volleyball and features a rougher texture and a lower internal pressure.

Reasons To Embrace Cycling Now As warm temperatures return, many people renew their interest in spending time outdoors. Spring and summer are peak times of year to enjoy the great outdoors. A popular activity in spring, summer and fall, cycling benefits the mind and body in many ways.

Described by her teachers as responsible and caring, smart and sensitive, a hard worker and a true leader, Megan served as Co-President of the National Honor Society, Vice President of Student Council, and Captain of her Varsity Volleyball, Basketball, and Lacrosse teams. Her community service activities include volunteering at Preble Street Homeless Shelter, Ronald McDonald House, the WHS Blood Drive, Links

Megan knows the challenges of raising her voice and being true to her values, particularly when working with others who hold diverse views. As part of the application process for the Wells Democratic Town Scholarship, students were asked to write an essay that connected the dots between their personal beliefs, values and actions, and the values and priorities of the Democratic party. Since beach volleyball teams are small, players must have a diverse skill set. Matches are played in a best of three format, and each set is worth 21 points. Players will switch court side every seven points. Fans can watch regional volleyball games and national games on the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation circuit. Internationally, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour is the professional tour for men and women. choose to share her experience as Vice Chair of the 27 person Mascot Advisory Committee. Megan found the experience an extremely positive one and was impressed that people could approach a difficult topic with an open mind. She states, “Listening, understanding, and having an open mind are important to establishing beliefs. Knowing both sides of an argument allows for empathy, respect, and better resources to make a choice in what you believe and what positions you support.”

Inspired by Emma Watson’s UN speech, “If not me, who? If not now, when?” Megan is doing her best to be the change she wants to see in the world. The Wells Democratic Town Committee Scholarship will be available annually to Wells residents who are graduating seniors, registered Democrats, and who plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college or university following high school. Applications are available each spring by emailing wellsmainedems@ gmail.com.

Mind One of the more common mental health benefits of exercise is that working up a sweat can help alleviate physical and mental stress. Reducing stress is important for overall health and can reduce a person’s risk of developing certain illnesses. Cycling is a great way to get outdoors, meet people and see the scenery. Getting outside to exercise also can reduce anxiety and depression. A study conducted in 2007 by researcher Charles Hillman indicated that exercise boosts brain power and may be able to stave off Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly. Dr. Phil Tomporowski has studied how children with ADHD may be positively affected by bike riding, and how control issues were improved without the use of medication. See CYCLING page 35...

ment Better Health Channel says that cycling for health and fitness is a good idea. Riding a bicycle is a low-impact form of exercise for people of all ages. Cycling can be fun and doesn’t require expensive equipment. Cycling generally causes less strain on joints and other areas of the body because it is low-impact. However, cycling provides enough resistance to be an effective muscle workout. People who want to improve their cardiovascular health and manage their weight can turn to cycling to achieve their goals. Cycling raises one’s metabolic rate to help the body burn fat when combined with a healthy diet. Cycling Weekly says cycling burns between 400 and 1,000 calories an hour, de-

pending on the intensity of a ride and the rider’s weight. Individuals can modify the distance and intensity of a cycling workout to suit their fitness goals. Disease risk and adverse health outcomes can be reduced by hopping on a bike. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Glasgow examined more than 260,000 individuals over the course of five years. The study found that cycling to work can cut a rider’s risk of developing heart disease or cancer in half. Those eager to get started on cycling are encouraged to

Always consult with a physician prior to exercise to ensure that the regimen is safe. Those with prior injuries or health problems should be doubly careful, though cycling is generally safe for beginners.
