Best-Selling Memoir by Ogunquit Author OGUNQUIT The world English audio rights to an Ogunquit resident’s best selling memoir, "The Unquiet Daughter,",were just sold to the largest independent publisher of unabridged audiobooks and provider of digital content to library, schools and retail markets in the world. The audio book, published by Tantor Media of Recorded Books, will be available for download on all distributor channels on August 29. "The Unquiet Daughter" is an intimate memoir that’s international in scope: Kept from her much of her family’s identity for decades, a New York journalist, born of the wartime love triangle that inspired the one in Graham Greene’s "The Unquiet American", searches for her father after barely surviving a youth of privilege, estrangement and cruelty. "The Unquiet Daughter" originally received an offer from a “Big Five publisher, but it fell through during the house’s publisher change in 2010. Six years later, after having finished a hard revision of the book in Ogunquit, Flood accidentally found a publisher while looking in the

She saw a little sign that said, “We Publish Books. Tom Holbrook, publisher of Piscataqua Press, read "The Unquiet Daughter" and Flood accepted his offer. “I’m thrilled that the audio rights were snapped up after Danielle’s book first became an Amazon best seller last April; paperbacks and ebook sales often become more brisk in the company of audio versions of a book. “Passionate and unflinchingly honest, this is a fascinating memor that explores the tangled connections between Graham Greene’s fictional version of wartime Indochina, and the real people there whose actions have haunted the author for most of her life, says biographer and Graham Greene expert Michael Shelden, also a Pulitzer finalist and Indiana State University professor. “Danielle Flood is the child

of an affair so much like the one described in the love triangle of Graham Greene’s novel, "The Unquiet American," that she is perfectly right to make her startling claim, ‘I am a sequel he never wrote.’ "The Unquiet American" was made into two movies, one starring Michael Caine in 2002, and was a popular subject taught in college classrooms off and on for decades.

KENNEBUNK Step out onto the hiking trails of the Kennebunk Plains, just a 90-minute drive from Boston, and you’ll stumble upon some of the world’s very best wild blueberries, ripe and free for the taking. Curiously, the fruit thrives in the preserve’s gravely, nutrient-poor soil, the result of a glacier that melted thousands of years ago. Conservators just ask that you tread lightly: The habitat — and its indigenous berries — support a lively ecosystem of creatures, including birds, bears, and but-

terflies. So park only in designated areas, don’t leave any trash on the trails, and pick only what you’ll use for personal consumption — but by all means, freeze or dehydrate those beautiful blues for use come wintertime, suggests Nature Conservancy land steward Jon Bailey. This year’s crop is expected to be at its peak come mid-August through mid-September, so get your picking pails ready. Kennebunk Plaines is located off Highway 99, Kennebunk. emy works with families toward a positive attendance record to meet their required number of 183 instructional days. Since MEVA is a public school program, there is no tuition and provides a statecertified teacher and all instructional materials for the program. However, students and families will be responsible for providing some consumable materials (such as printer ink and paper). It is expected that students will spend no more than 20 to 25 percent of their time on the computer in the early grades. Computers help provide effective assessment, planning, and timemanagement tools. Computers also act as powerful teaching tools that can motivate, stimulate, and inform children about the world around them. Computers do not, however, replace a solid education; they help facilitate one. That's why MEVA uses a unique multimedia approach that also includes a great deal of old-fashioned books, workbooks, and instructional materials. At the high-school level, students will spend nearly their entire school day online. For more information about Maine Virtual Academy visit: http://meva.k12.com/.

USCIS Launches Mobile Form for Replacing Green Card WASHINGTON, DC Lawful permanent residents who file the online Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, without assistance from an attorney or accredited representative, can now file their form and upload evidence entirely on a mobile device. The redesign of the online Form I-90 also allows residents to navigate the site more easily, making the process more convenient. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) provides the new mobile-responsive design as an intuitive method for answering

questions, navigating through sections, and uploading evidence on a mobile device. Instructions for filing require providing certain evidence, such as a copy of government-issued identification. For those filing through a mobile device, it may be easier to take a photo of the evidence and upload it directly. The redesigned online form also provides a more personalized experience, as users are directed to answer only those questions specific to their case. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Marshwood High School’s Ryan Long Wins Jazz Scholarship SOUTH BERWICK The Seacoast Jazz Society has made its annual scholarship award to the Summer Youth Music School (SYMS) at the University of New Hampshire, and this year’s winner is 17-year-old Ryan Long, soon to be a senior at Marshwood High School in South Berwick. Each year, the Seacoast Jazz Society solicits nominations from Seacoast area music teachers and band directors to help select a deserving young

music student with an interest in jazz for its scholarship award. Young Ryan Long, a trumpeter, was put forward by his band director, David Graichen, who describes Ryan as “an outstanding musician and leader among his peers, adding “he has a positive attitude and is a diligent worker. He absolutely loves everything having anything to do with jazz. Ryan has been playing trumpet since fourth grade and is now a student of John Cardin.

Marshwood Student Poetry Contest Winner SOUTH BERWICK Marshwood Great Works School elementary school teacher, Elizabeth Morrison, had announced that her student, Wyatt Stout was one of the grand prize winners in the Scholastic "Express Yourself" poetry contest. Wyatt won a $400 gift certificate to Scholastic.

Wyatt’s winning entry: MYSELF I’m the best myself

I won’t be depressed I’m only the best

I don’t depress myself

my life will be an eternal test

I professionally yet humbly express myself

and myself will constantly be expressed

I invest in myself

At Marshwood High School, he plays in the marching band, concert band, jazz band, wind ensemble, brass quintet and the pit band. He has also been a member of the school’s winter percussion group. Among his other honors: He has been selected for the District One Music Festival and the All-New England Band Festival at Plymouth State two years in a row. At SYMS, Ryan will participate in a program that is now seventy year old, one that provides opportunities for students to share their passion for music with other talented musicians in a supportive and engaging environment, studying with outstanding teachers and freelance artists from around the country. The camp meets on the campus of the University of New Hampshire in Durham. The Seacoast Jazz Society is a non-profit organization, formed in 1990 with an objective of supporting jazz on the New England Seacoast, roughly from Newburyport, Massachusetts, to Kennebunkport, Maine. Its mission is to promote an understanding of and enthusiasm for jazz, providing opportunities for listeners, students, and performers to hear jazz and to learn about the art form and its history. The organization’s annual SYMS

Scholarship Award is one of a number of initiatives and programs offered in support of this mission. More information about the Seacoast Jazz Society is available at www.seacoastjazz.org. Exhibits at GMSG in York YORK The mid-summer exhibitions at York’s George Marshall Store Gallery (GMSG) make inspiring visual connections between painting, prints and sculptural ceramics. The exhibitions continue through August 20. In the front room is a group exhibition entitled “Imprint, bringing together works by David Ernster, Phyllis Ewen, and Wendy Prellwitz. The unified theme water and the sea. Ernster’s fascination with water and nature began as a child growing up near the Mississippi River. The mixed-media artwork of Phyllis Ewen is equally influenced by the natural world with a fusion of art and science. The Somerville, MA-based artist aims to suggest a commentary on politics, society, and nature, no matter the medium. Her “Restless Sands series is made up of collaged digital prints of the beaches on Cape Cod.

Similarly, the combination of graphic and organic imagery in Wendy Prellwitz‘s monotypes and paintings are a result of the dualities that she observes in the fluidity of water – the known and unknown, the tangible and intangible. “Surroundings presents two dozen oil paintings by Portsmouth, NH-based artist Amy Brnger. Known for her still life, landscapes, interiors, and flower paintings. In the dock-level gallery space is “Fresh & Ripe, an exhibition of paintings by Brett X. Gamache. Gamache’s vividly painted New England scenes illuminate with their bright colors and fresh atmosphere and includes a variety of subjects from lobster boats and surfing scenes, to still life and rocky shores. The gallery is part of Museums of Old York and is located at 140 Lindsay Road, York. FMI: 207-351-1083; www.georgemarhshallstoregallery.com.

St. Peter's By-The-Sea, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed in 1897 with a bequest by Nannie Dunlap Conoroe who also funded construction of the Ogunquit Memorial Library at that time. The church is considered a fine example of the Gothic Revival style and is one of several architecturally distinguished summer resort chapels that dot the Maine coast. BUSINESS & FINANCE Business Blunders Can Affect A Company’s Brand On a November day in 2008, three automotive-industry CEOs flew from Detroit to Washington, D.C., on a mission they insisted was crucial to their companies’ survival. They sought a federal bailout to help prop up their struggling businesses. But to the American public and some members of Congress, the CEOs’ lament that they were hard up for cash rang hollow because of their chosen mode of travel – luxurious private jets. “Their arrogant attitude left people with bad perceptions of the individual car brands, the overall Detroit brand and even the larger brand of cars made in America, says Larry Light, a global brand revitalization expert and CEO of the business-consulting firm Arcature. Such stumbles aren’t that unusual, and brands on occasion commit major missteps that risk putting them out of business. In fact, says Light, co-author with Joan Kiddon of Six Rules for Brand Revitalization, some people even claim brands go through a natural life cycle from birth to death, so the eventual demise of any given brand is inevitable. But he insists that’s not necessarily so. “Brands can live forever, he says. “The problem is that brands too often get into trouble due to self-inflicted actions of their owners. Light says there are prob-

ably a dozen identifiable ways businesses can make a mess of their brands. Here are four: The arrogance of great success. Arrogance is bad for business and bad for brands. “Avoiding arrogance takes character and effort on the part of leaders, Light says. “The leader who creates a culture of arrogance by letting success go to the head and ego is a leader who is more committed to self than to brand. The comfort of complacency. For brands and organizations, complacency lulls people into laziness and inaction, and crushes curiosity and creativity. Eventually, it leads to marketshare loss. “The danger is that you stop looking at the changes in the world around you and in your specific market segment, Light says. “Complacency creates inaction and, eventually, irrelevancy. Building of organizational barriers and bureaucratic processes. Bureaucracy and “silos, where departments don’t share information with each other, can damage the brand’s health and the organization’s health. Silos, for example, create all sorts of bad behaviors, such as hoarding, stopping the spread of ideas, and reinforcement of the status quo, Light says. When silos are combined with mindnumbing bureaucracy, a brand can stagnate. Focusing on analyst satisfaction instead of customer satisfaction. Too many companies focus on short-term gains

and the stock value this quarter. They lose sight of long-term strategies and keeping customers happy over time. A brand needs to satisfy stock analysts and investors four times a year, Light says, but they need to satisfy customers every day. “Yes, corporate boards have a duty to shareholders, he says. “But those boards need to recognize that there is no shareholder value unless there is customerdriven brand value. “Even the biggest brands can fall into trouble, as we see all

the time in the news, Light says. “Sometimes it’s a fast free fall, and sometimes it takes decades. But it doesn’t have to be fatal. It’s possible to change the trajectory from waning to winning. Larry Light, a global brand revitalization expert, is co-author with Joan Kiddon of Six Rules for Brand Revitalization. He also is the Chief Executive Officer of Arcature (www. arcature.com), a marketing consulting company that has advised a variety of marketers in packaged goods, technology,

Home Prices Rise Four Critical Lessons that Every 3.54 Percent in June Entrepreneur Needs to Learn STATEWIDE Maine real estate continues to rise in value, even with some slight declines in sales. According to Maine Listings, single-family existing homes across the state experienced a 3.54 percent increase in the median sales price (MSP), to $205,000 comparing June 2017 to June 2016. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. Sales of singlefamily existing homes eased 3.62 percent in June. “Coming off a recordbreaking 2016, our June 2017 numbers show continued strength, states Greg Gosselin, 2017 President of the Maine Association of REALTORSŽ.

“For the state, the number of homes sold in June 2017 is nearly eight percent higher than the most recent three-year June average. “Homes that are move-in ready and priced appropriately are quickly under contract. Buyers are plentiful and seeking the long-term financial benefits of home ownership." According to the National Association of Realtors, home sales across the country in June increased 0.7 percent compared to June 2016. The national MSP of $266,200 reflects a 6.6 percent increase. Regionally, sales in the Northeast increased 1.3 percent while the regional MSP rose 4.1 percent to $296,300. Source: Maine Real Estate

nacle of entrepreneurial excellence – such as Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos – are viewed with a mixture of awe and envy. But what separates those who experience wild success from those left picking up the pieces of a failed enterprise? Part of it comes down to good old work ethic, says Bill Green, founder and CEO of The Crestar Group of Companies and author of “ALL IN: 101 Real Life Business Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs.â€? “If you don’t want to work harder than everyone and you don’t have your passion, you shouldn’t be an entrepreneur,â€? Green says. But that’s far from the whole story, says Green, whose own route to success began in a flea market. There are plenty of other lessons that budding entrepreneurs need to learn. Just a few include: • Become a tactical and strategic CEO. Tactical leadership is doing things right. Strategic leadership is doing the right things. “You probably are doing a lot of things right tactically to get your startup off the ground,â€? Green says. “But now it’s time to think about your long-term strategy.â€? The greatest CEOs are visionaries, always plotting their company’s next big move, he says. “If you see a way to im-

prove your business, you’d better have the vision and the guts to pull the trigger,â€? Green says, “even if the naysayers say it can’t be done. • Let your employees complete you. “Most of us can’t do it all or know everything, so it’s important to hire a team that can compensate for your shortcomings,â€? Green says. The best way to do that, he says, is to think like an NBA owner who builds a championship team by drafting a well-balanced roster of players whose abilities complement each other. • Good customers complain, bad customers go away. No one enjoys hearing complaints, but those angry customers should be viewed as a gift, Green says. They care about your product or service and they want you to fix whatever problem they’re experiencing so they can continue to have that product or service. Many unhappy customers just walk away never to return, so you don’t know why you lost their business. • The best deals are the ones you don’t make. There are good business deals out there, but there are many more bad deals, Green says. It’s important that any deal you make is See LESSONS page 26...

Health & Fitness 4 Tips For Overcoming Life’s Most Traumatic Experiences Wouldn’t it be great if our most difficult days came with Hollywood-happy endings? In the movies, when faced with the worst possible situations, our heroes rise to the occasion and find strength they never knew they had. But those who experience real-life traumas are just as likely to end up questioning their faith in God, their family and themselves. The scars, both physical and emotional, may never completely heal. And it can take years to find “meaning from it all. Even those who seem equipped to handle the worst – because of their religious beliefs or strong family and community connections – can find themselves questioning everything. “There certainly are difficult lessons to learn when your life is suddenly turned upside down, says Susan Mattern, author of “Out of the Lion’s Den: A Little Girl’s Mountain Lion Attack, A Mother’s Search for Answers. In 1986, while Mattern, her husband and their two children were hiking in Casper’s Wilderness Park in Orange County, California, a mountain lion grabbed her 5-year-old daughter, Laura, and disappeared. By the time she was found and rescued, Laura had been severely mauled. She survived, but lost the use of her right hand and the vision in one eye. She had severe brain injuries, and her life hung in the balance for weeks. Mattern, a former nun, struggled with guilt, anger, stress and frustration as she fought to help her daughter recover – and to hold the county accountable when she learned the staff knew there were mountain lions in the park but hadn’t warned visitors. In the decade after the attack, she lost her religious faith, but came out of the experience with a new kind of happiness and fulfillment. Mattern has these tips for those battling to come back after a life-changing trauma: Have faith in yourself. If you don’t believe in a higher power, or if you lose your religious faith, you can find your own meaning in life. “It was very difficult to give up my beliefs, she says. “But instead of a vast emptiness where God used to be, there is caring, love and friendship. Have more than one focus. Mattern’s primary goal was helping her daughter get

well, but the family also spent years battling Orange County in court. “The trial took up so much of our life, and that was a good thing in many ways, she says. “It gave us another purpose. If you can’t find courage within yourself, look to those you love. Decades after her daughter’s

attack, Mattern still is in awe of her friends; her husband, Don; and her daughter’s rescuers, doctors and legal team. But she draws the most strength from Laura, who isn’t bitter and lives an independent and fulfilling life. Don’t expect to draw lessons from the experience right

away. You may need to wait for the lessons to become apparent. It will take time and painful reflec-

It’s Mosquito Season in Maine Summer is hereand it's mosquito season in Maine. Following recent identification of a case of Jamestown Canyon virus in the State, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) wants to raise awareness

about arboviral diseases, including Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), and West Nile virus (WNV), which are serious infections that are transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. Although rare, these diseases have potentially severe and even fatal

consequences for those who contract them. Jamestown Canyon virus is a relatively rare disease that can be carried by multiple mosquitoes, including mosquito species that are present here in Maine. The case involved a mature adult from Kennebec County who had symptom onset in early June. The case required hospi-

Health & Fitness Child Health Care Grant Applications Available STATEWIDE The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) is actively seeking grant applications from Maine families in need of financial assistance to help pay for their child’s health care treatments, services or equipment not covered, or not fully covered, by their commercial health insurance plan. Qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 annually per child ($10,000 lifetime maximum per child), to help pay for medical services and equipment such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling services, surgeries, prescriptions, wheelchairs, orthotics,

eyeglasses and hearing aids. To be eligible for a grant, children must be 16 years of age or younger. Families must meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States and have a commercial health insurance plan. Families do not need to have insurance

through UnitedHealthcare to be eligible. UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation has already awarded over 13,000 grants valued at more than $35 million to children and their families across the United States, and

aims to award its 20,000th grant by Jan. 1, 2020. In Maine, UHCCF has awarded a total of 11 grants worth nearly $35,000. The foundation is hoping to spread the word about

its medical grant program so more families will apply and receive grants this year. To learn more – and to apply – parents or legal guardians should visit www.uhccf.org.

~ Where To Dine ~ CHECK OUT WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT US!

Went to Bintliff’s for our wedding anniversary and had a great time. I don’t recall the last time I’ve had better service. The server’s timing was awesome -- there when we needed her and not intrusive. The Beef Wellington was our reason for going to Bintliff’s and it was very good. ~ Scarborough, ME in May 2017

Mattern says that after Laura grew into a young woman they were looking at a book that posed the question: If you could change one day in your life, which day would it be? Mattern thought the choice was obvious. Laura disagreed. “That day changed all of us, I know, she told her mother. “But I wouldn’t have become the person I am today, and we wouldn’t have cared for each other as much as we do, or have such a wonderful family. ~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, I have 2 questions for you that I am hoping will be easy fixes. I keep getting a 'long running script' error on a lot of the websites I use. Is there something I can do to eliminate the problem? I do hit 'stop' which sometimes works but not always unfortunately. Also, does anyone else complain of issues with ads on internet explorer. This especially happens if I am trying to write an email-nothing works until the new ad is finished loading. Two very annoying, but hopefully fixable, problems. I guess it can always be worse though. Thanks for your time and for providing a wonderful service. It is appreciated. Diana Dear Diana, First, let's look at what a "Long Running Script" really is. A script is usually some Java Script code that Internet Explorer is trying to run, you can

think of it as a small program or application. When Internet Explorer (IE) encounters a script, it looks at the number of lines in the code of the script and if it is longer than 5 million lines of code, IE will give you the long running script error message. Unfortunately, IE also pauses the script until you select an action. Since you have no control over the scripts on a web page that you don't own, your only option would be to make sure IE doesn't display a notification about every script error it finds. You can turn off notifications following these directions: 1. Open Internet Explorer and click on the, "Tools" icon in the upper- right corner. It looks like a gear. 2. In the drop-down list under tools, click on "Internet Options" 3. In the Internet Options window, click on the "Advanced" tab. 4. In the list of settings, find the one that says, "Display a notification about every script error" and if

there is a check mark in front of it, click to remove the check mark. 5. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box to save your changes and close the window. I believe your second problem is probably related to the first one. Since your message came from a yahoo email address, which is free for you to use, but supported by the advertisements. The ads that you are getting could be from yahoo. Another possible cause could be that you are infected with some sort of advertising malware. If that is the case, the ads would be on every web page you visit, not just the email pages. Those advertisements could also be the long running scripts that IE is warning you about. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I purchased new laptop with windows 10. I am having a problem with the font size - without touching anything on the computer (other than moving the mouse) the screen will get large or very small. There is a small magnifying glass looking icon in upper right hand corner that I have to go to to have it "go back to default." Is there any way to keep the size of contents on screen the same size. This is very annoying. Thanks for your

Dear Computer Lady, Will you write about Microsoft Office 2013's OneNote? It is so confusing to me. Thanks, Mary

Dear Phyllis, Are you using a mouse, or the touchpad on the laptop? If you are using a mouse, you must be scrolling with the scroll wheel while you are using it. That would change the size of objects in a window. Move your fingers away from the scroll wheel and see if that makes a difference. If you are using the touchpad, you might be using an area on the touchpad meant for scrolling. Usually this is along one edge of the touchpad. Try using the middle of the touchpad instead of the edges. Those are only a couple of guesses as to what might be going on based on the information you have provided. I hope one of them helps you. Elizabeth

Dear Mary, OneNote is actually a program that I use all the time, and because I can take my notes with me on my iPhone and/or iPad, I find more and more uses for it. Let's start with what OneNote is. OneNote is a digital note taking application. Think

if it as a notebook. I might be dating myself, but I remember those trapper-keeper notebooks that had pages to write in, and pockets to keep things in, OneNote is kind of the digital version of a trapper-keeper. When you open OneNote, you will see a mostly empty notebook waiting for you to fill it with tabs across the top, and pages down the right side. In my "Work" notebook, for example, I have a tab on the top for this newsletter, and a list of pages down the right hand side, one page for each week of the year. You can create as many notebooks as you want, just click on "File", then, "New" select a location to save your notebook (if you save it in "OneDrive" you will be able to access the information in your notebook on your mobile devices as well as other computers) and type a name for your notebook. You can break your notebook down into sections using the tabs across the top. Each section can then hold individual pages which are listed down the right side. I hope this helps you get started with OneNote. I would love to answer more specific questions about how to use the program, and maybe someone can share how they use OneNote. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Maisy and Marley II are siblings who share my office at the Safe Haven Adoption Center. I’ve gotten to know them quite well, so I can attest to their worthy merits. My office is small, so we have become close. In fact, as I write their tails are swishing right under my nose. So I’m going to let them write this feature for me: “Hi, I’m Marley II. They tell me I’m quite handsome, with a silver glow to my grey tiger coat. My white eyeliner and facial markings make me unforgettable. I’m apparently quite funny, because everything I say makes the volunteers here laugh.

YORK Harry and Jack are litter mates that have never been separated. Adopted when they were very young kittens, they have spent the last 8 years living the life cats dream about: well loved and cared for by their human companion, kept safe as inside only kitties, toys to play with and a sunny window to nap in. These two had it made until tragedy struck and their human was taken from them much too soon. She had them and they had her. Harry and Jack are now looking for another home to begin a new life. Remarkably, they have adjusted well to their foster home: Jack (black) is very friendly and likes to get his belly scratched, Harry (gray) is a little on the shy side but enjoys being petted. They are neutered, healthy boys

but she decided that their home environment was just too busy for a retiree. Izzy would prefer an older couple or a single person in a quiet environment so she, Izzy, can enjoy her retirement years. In every respect, Izzy is a delightful happy kitty, just isn't into a lot of confusion and the high drama of an active household. Izzy is current on all necessary vaccinations, is spayed and has passed her wellness exam. She,

who only want to be together in a home they can call their own. Do you have room for this sweet pair? For more information on Harry and Jack, please email Voice for Animals: in2catz@ gmail.com.

York Women’s Golf League Results YORK After 8 weeks of play, the York Women's Golf League continues to demonstrate strong competition and close matches. Team 4, captained by Linda Jellison, is in first place with 97 3/4 points and Debbie Erikson's Team 6 follows close behind with 97 1/2 points.

Third place is held by Paula Dargan's Team 3 with 95 1/4 points. 4th and 5th place teams are separated by only 1/4 of a point: Team 1, captained by Peggy Todd has 92 points and Team 2, led by Liz Nolan, has won 91 3/4 points. In 6th place is Sandy Petrovich's Team 5 with 90 1/4 points.

42nd Annual Herbert D. Bracy Junior Golf Tournament YORK The 42nd Annual Herbert D. Bracy Junior Golf Tournament will be hosted by the York Golf & Tennis Club on August 8. The free event includes a round of golf, lunch, refreshments and prizes for five different groups (age on August 8, 2017): 8 and under (children play 4 holes); 9 to 11 (children play 9 holes), 12-13 (18 holes), 14-15 (18), and 16-17 (18) Named in honor of Herbert Bracy, an avid golfer and junior

golf supporter, the event is orchestrated by his family, including son, Ted, grandson Doug and his wife Brenda. Herbert, a caddy during the depression, loved the game of golf, particularly enjoying teaching juniors, even helping them to make clubs! “When junior golfers are ready to play in their first tournament, the Bracy Tournament is a great way to start,” according to Kyle Page, Head PGA professional at the YG&TC. “Certainly lots of juniors have had their

YORK York Little League’s 8-10-year-old Boy’s All Star team has won the State of Maine tournament! On Friday, August 4, twelve families will leave for the regional tournament in Cranston, RI to compete against teams as far south as Maryland. This is the first time York has ever represented the State of Maine in baseball All-Stars! The League is seeking help from the community. Although winning States will give lifelong memories to the players and families, the cost and commitment is substantial. Each family will be in RI for 8 days. Travel, lodging, food, etc. is estimated to cost around $2,500 per family. York Little League is looking to help mitigate these expenses. The money raised in this camstart here.” Indeed, it was where American Professional golfer Keegan Bradley made his tournament debut - at the age of 7! When Keegan won his first PGA Championship in 2011, he remembered where he got his start, the Bracy Tournament, thanks to his grandfather, the late Robert “Bob” Hansen. Keegan signed a PGA Championship flag, now hanging in the pro shop, which states: “To York Golf & Tennis Club! This is nothing compared to my Bracy Tournament trophy! Thanks for helping me start my career!”

paign will be equally distributed to all players and their families to go towards travel costs. The team’s success starts with great players and coaches but also from the generosity of our town people! If you’re able to donate any amount, it will be much appreciated. Go to www.go

...SCHORER from page 34 ing from Newton High School, Janet attended Mary Brooks Junior College and the Massachusetts School of Physical Therapy. During her career in the medical field, she worked as a laboratory technician at Kenmore Hospital, and served as an assistant and medical secretary in surgical offices in Boston and Brookline. In 1949, Janet married Martin Schorer. Their sixty-six years of marriage were blessed with deep devotion, many shared interests, and fun-filled celebrations with their numerous friends and family. They made their home in Natick, MA, and shared it lovingly with their parakeet Birdie. Upon retirement, Janet and Martin moved to Wells Branch, Maine to care for Janet’s widowed uncle, Willis Gowen. Janet attended the Congregational Church of Wells with Martin and served as sexton of the Oak Grove Cemetery. Her love of outdoor recreation and the preservation of nature fostered her involvement in the Kennebunk Fish and Game Club, Laudholm Farm, the Wells Reserve and

~ Obituaries ~ the Great Works Regional Land Trust. Her interest in the local community and its history led to membership in the Brick Store Museum, the Historic Society of Wells and Ogunquit, the WellsOgunquit Center at Moody and the Wells Branch Community League. Above all, throughout their life together, Janet shared with Martin a passion for antique cars, notably the MG. On the New England MG T Register for more than half a century, Janet and Martin thoroughly enjoyed socializing at “Gatherings of the Faithful” and traveling with the New England MG Car Club throughout New England, America and the world. Janet’s last years were graced with the companionship of her faithful friend, Janice Mildram. Janet exhibited a zest for life, elegant style, love of adventure and a genius for celebration. Her sense of humor was mischievous, imaginative and witty. Her greatest happiness was to provoke a smile. Survivors include Janet’s sister, Ruth Carley of California, brothers-in-law Peter Schorer of Arizona and R. Thomas Schorer of California, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-de-

ceased by her husband, Martin, and her sister, Eleanor Maude Whitham. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 7, at the Newton Cemetery, Newton Center, MA. Memorial donations may be made to the Wells Branch Community League, PO Box 713, Wells, ME 04090. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Janet’s Book of Memories page at www.bibberfuneral.com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk; www.bibberfuneral.com.

Maryjan Wydra, 71 WELLS – Maryjan (Jan) Wydra, 71 years, of Wells, died July 19, 2017 at home in the loving care of his family after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jan was born May 12, 1946 in Germany, the son of Jan and Else (Recht) Wydra. His family immigrated to the United States when Jan was five years old. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Hope College in Holland, MI and his master’s degree from the Uni-

versity of Southern Maine. Jan also proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was an English teacher at Kennebunk High School, Traip Academy and Wells High School. On December 20, 1997, Jan married Holly Jean Kelly. Jan loved his family, and enjoyed spending time and playing golf with his close friends. He was very talented artistically and enjoyed woodworking, ceramics, and created beautiful jewelry through silversmithing. He took great pride in his home and yard and spent a great deal of time maintaining both. He was a member of the Kennebunk Fish and Game Club and loved watching classic movies and reading literature. Outside of the Wells High classroom Jan could be found on the football field as a coach and mentor for many of his students. Jan was predeceased by his sister, Susan Wydra. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Holly; his daughters, Kairsten Wydra and her husband, Mark D’Ascenzo of Seattle, WA and Kathleen Kelly of Scottsdale, AZ; his sons, Justin Wydra and his wife, Jenna, of Colchester,

VT and Skip Kelly and his wife, Carolyn, of Andover, MA; his six grandchildren, Atlas, Mabel, Summer, Maeve, Finn and Johann; and his loyal Labrador Retriever, Sammie. Following Jan’s wishes there will be no services. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to: Andrew L. Warshaw, MD, Institute for Pancreatic Cancer Research, BUL370C, 55 Fruit Street, Boston, MA 02144; 617-726-8254. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Jan’s Book of Memories page at www.bibberfuneral.com.
