From Rescue to Rockstar

WELLS Back in April, Facebook fans submitted their rescue horses' stories for the contest “TheHorse.com's Rescue to Rockstar Contest. Fans then voted for their favorite story and the winning entry, announced in May, was Jessica Gonzalez of York. Gonzalez's story about her Belgian draft horse received nearly 700 reactions and was shared 221 times, amassing more than 50 comments. The contest was sponsored by 'The Horse,' who awarded Gonzalez with a prize pack for her victory In her winning entry, Gonzalez wrote: “This is my first (of many)

rescue story, my dear friend Revel. When I was in college and living in the city I was seriously horse-deprived. When I was looking for a part-time job while in school my boyfriend (now husband) found what I thought would be perfect, a job as a carriage tour driver. How cool! I'd get to be with horses in the big city ‌ it was best of both worlds, right? How wrong I was didn't really hit until the second year at the job. I worked consistently with the same goofy Belgian all the time; I loved him to pieces. When we were waiting for rides I spent my time brushing him,

He arrived at my home severely underweight and covered in sores and rubs from his poorly fitting harness (it may have fit a few hundred pounds ago). He was no longer the playful boy I met. His eyes were dead, and when he came down with a terrible fever shortly after arriving we feared the worst. With his strong heart to guide us we matched his will

braiding him, playing tug games with dog toys, and feeding him goodies. We had a blast together. I won't speak my current opinions on the carriage industry, but I'll just say that when decisions are made to benefit the business, to make more money, they never benefit the animals. A few business changes resulted in the job rapidly becoming miserable for both of us. As his quality of life went down in the company I struggled trying to compensate for what he was lacking. I began spending my days and the money he earned for me medicating his legs and feet, supplementing his feed, and trying to keep him and his tack clean and dry to reduce the sores. By the end of the second year I couldn't stand by anymore. As an employee (not his owner) I couldn't do enough to fix what was going wrong. I left the company. I returned to the owner of the company on a regular basis with an ever-growing handful of cash ready to buy him. In my opinion, he earned that money, and it should be used to buy his freedom. After years of constant rejection, I finally got the word they were ready to sell him. He

Berwick’s Prime Tanning is Transformed

By Carin Lee, Staff Reporter BERWICK The former Prime Tanning company of Berwick, sits in the physical center of the town and was for many years its largest employer, with over 300 workers on the payroll at its height. Many older residents think of it as a

longtime employer of local workers, while younger residents see it now as an empty, deteriorated factory in the middle of Berwick's downtown. However, the status of Prime Tanning's site is changing. When the company closed, it left 7.2 acres filled with old build-

ings and parking lots. Its creditor, Fund of Jupiter Corporation, was awarded the site by the bankruptcy court. The town wanted to clean up the highly contaminated site, but to receive grant money from the federal Environmental Protection Agency it needed to own the property itself. In 2014

the Town brokered a deal with Jupiter to “take the property for back taxes owed by Prime Tanning. As part of this arrangement, Jupiter would have the option to purchase the lots back for back taxes owed once the site is clean. In 2013 the citizens of Berwick voted through a referendum to spend $25,000 to study the potential options for re-development of the downtown and add that study to a comprehensive plan for its future. A twelvemember committee of volunteers took on this challenge. A survey about what residents would like for their downtown was sent to every household in town. 600 households responded. The survey showed that residents wanted their new downtown to have a public common, restaurants, small retail businesses, a marina with improved access to the Salmon Falls River, a community center, elderly housing and a cultural arts center. They also wanted a sports complex,

sidewalks, more parking, improved traffic flow and a continuation of Main St. that would connect Eleanor's Way and Lyman Streets. The committee drew up a concept design based on this information to guide the town through the next twenty years. The plan gave the town of Berwick the legal backing to create zoning, also known as land use ordinances, when designing the downtown. For example new businesses that become a part of the former Prime Tanning site will have to set the front of their building within five feet of the lot line. Parking lots must be in the rear of the building. This would prevent big box stores from coming in. This plan would also create a walker-friendly downtown. Many of the things on the list of what residents wanted have been incorporated as part of the adopted Downtown Vision & Implementation Plan. See PRIME page 37...

The Weekly Sentinel 13

~ News ~ Jetport Company Opening New ‘Aviation Gateway’ to Maine PORTLAND Northeast Air is a company that few Mainers are familiar with. But if you’ve taken an airline out of Portland, the chances are that they've been an integral part of your flight. They fueled the plane you were sitting in. They were the people deicing your plane as you were preparing for takeoff on a cold winter day. They may have provided maintenance support to the flight. And if you arrived on a private aircraft or business aircraft, Northeast Air’s employees were probably the people who welcomed you to Maine. After several years of planning and design, Northeast Air will unveil its newly expanded facility this Friday. The new terminal includes state of the art customer service for passengers and their crew, in addition to a new pilots lounge and flight planning room. A two story glass enclosed waiting area serves as a portal for arriving and departing passengers. Northeast air has

invested over three million dollars to provide first class flight support to private and business flyers. NEA President Henry Laughlin says the company is making this investment because first impressions of Maine matter. 'The Portland Jetport is an important aviation gateway to Maine, not only for vacationers but also for major business leaders and investors who have companies here, or may be considering a location in the state of Maine', he said. “We have to make the best first impression that we can. That's why we are making this investment and why the owners of private jets and aircraft enjoy coming to Northeast Air. Northeast Air is a thirdgeneration company that employs 75 people and has been helping flyers and aircraft owners at the Portland Jetport for nearly fifty years. It provides fuel, maintenance and repair services to private aircraft and

jets of all sizes. Northeast Air is also a factory service center for one of the world’s premier turboprop aircraft built by Pilatus Switzerland.

Tramuto has been appointed to the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights (RFK Human Rights) Board of Directors. Tramuto, a long-standing advocate for increased access to healthcare for the underserved across the globe, is the CEO of Healthways, the largest independent global provider of well-being improvement solutions, and the chairman and founder of Health eVillages, a non-profit that provides mobile medical diagnostic and treatment information for healthcare professionals in the most challenging clinical environments in the world. In 2012, Tramuto was appointed to RFK Human Rights Europe because of his expertise and strategic leadership in global health, including his proven ability to develop and implement healthcare solutions in countries with underserved communities. Since 2014, Tramuto has served as chairman, where he led efforts to support the work of RFK Human Rights, bringing human rights education and advocacy programs to schools and communities around the world. Tramuto also serves on RFK Human Rights Leadership Board. “Through our continued collaboration with his global non-profit, Health eVillages, Donato makes an impact by working with healthcare providers around the world to bring quality care to some of the poorest, most underserved regions of the world,” said Kerry Kennedy, president of RFK Human Rights. “He is a valued member of our organization and I believe that Donato’s energy and passion for helping make this world a more just and peaceful place will make him a great addition to the RFK Human Rights Board of Directors.” Tramuto joins a new slate of directors at the organization, including Apple CEO Tim Cook. In 2011, Tramuto founded Health eVillages and through this organization, has increased access to medical information via mobile technology in Haiti, Kenya, South Sudan

and the U.S., including a rural community health center that serves residents of the poorest and sickest county in Tramuto’s home state of Maine. Most recently, Health eVillages developed a community outreach program with Healthways and Mercy Community Healthcare to provide support to meet the diverse health needs of uninsured and underinsured patients from across Middle Tennessee. “I am deeply honored to be a member of this prestigious organization that is intrinsically connected to the beliefs I share with my childhood hero, Robert Kennedy,” said Tramuto. “Through the Senator’s writings and iconic speeches I realized many years ago that each of us has the ability to

drive change – both great and small – that has the capacity to improve the lives of others. RFK Human Rights is a reflection of his belief that all of us share in the responsibility to make better this world.” Tramuto has been widely recognized for his professional and philanthropic contributions. In 2014 he was honored alongside Hillary Clinton, Robert DeNiro and Tony Bennett, with the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope award for his longtime commitment to social change. He is the chairman and founder of the Tramuto Foundation, a Maine-based nonprofit that is celebrating 15 years of helping individuals and organizations achieve their educational and healthcare goals. Tramuto serves on several executive leadership boards, including the Boston University School of Public Health, Brown University Healthcare Leadership Board, and Safe Harbor Compliance and Clinical Development. David Miller Returns from Three Day Band Directors Institute

David Miller and Robert Sheldon at the N.E. Band Directors Institute.

SOUTH BERWICK David Miller recently spent three days at the New England Band Directors Institute at Plymouth State University. While there he had the opportunity to work with highly regarded educators, composers, and musicians from across the United States. He was able to work with composer Robert Sheldon and conductor Anthony Maiello. Maiello teaches at George Mason University and is one of the most highly regarded and respected conductors in the United States. David joined approximately 120 music education colleagues from New England. They spent two and a half days participating in workshops that

focused on instructional strategies and techniques used in the instrumental music classroom. They collaborated to evaluate new literature for concert bands and jazz bands. Miller’s role as the person up front leading the group was given to Dr. Maiello and Robert Sheldon. David joined a 120 piece concert band and an 18-piece jazz band. He played and evaluated new literature and discussed teaching and conducting techniques. This professional development opportunity was provided by the district and David said it is one of the best and most rewarding opportunities he’s experienced in music education.

You want your snappy little dog lined with mayo, Flo’s secret tangy brown relish, and a dash of celery salt. That’s it. Do not inquire about varieties of mustard or sides of French fries. They have chips; that’s it. Wash it all down with a

Flo’s Hot Dog Highlighted in Boston Magazine CAPE NEDDICK A small Cape Neddick eatery, Flo’s Hot Dog, located at 1359 Rte 1 Cape Neddick, was highlighted in the June issue of Boston Magazine as part of its “Best. Summer. Ever” feature. The magazine team rounded up a comprehensive list of places and activities that they recommend to readers as fantastic summer destinations in New England. What follows is the Flo's creed: Order a Flo’s Hot Dog, Unscathed. On a dusty stretch of Route 1 between the Kittery outlets and the glitz of Kennebunkport lies Flo’s, a drooping hot-dog shanty in Cape Neddick with lines out the door. Travelers gather from miles around to order these relish-laced, steamed dogs— once served by Florence Stacy

and now tended by her sassy daughter-in-law, Gail. Remember Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi? Gail’s a cheerier version. She makes delectable dogs, but there’s a definite protocol you’ll need to follow when ordering. Shut the screen door. Do not linger with it wide open while standing in line. You’ll let the bugs in, and you’ll get scolded. Duck! The roof is low. Anyone over 6 feet should wait outside or prepare to stoop. Dispatch someone to claim a picnic bench. There are only a few, and there’s nowhere to sit otherwise. Hover like a vulture until those lazy tourists get up. Name a number. OGUNQUIT Enjoy a special Barn Gallery program: Estate Planning for Artists and Collectors on Thursday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Barn Gallery. The excitement and joy of creating and or collecting also brings with it the challenge of deciding what will happen to the work in the future. If you do not make a plan, someone else will do it for you! You need to ask the right questions and find the appropriate advisors. The free, two-part program will address a range of priorities for getting started with the process: the necessity of a will; how the work is preserved, presented

and perhaps disseminated; how to value the collection; what tax laws apply; who should benefit from the estate; what is important to save; and the importance of an art inventory. Whether your collection is small or large, or whether it is simple or complex, the program will address aspects of planning and organizing. Top Reasons Sales Managers Hire The Wrong People When numerous sales reps aren’t meeting their target numbers, a company’s puzzled leaders may go scrambling to figure out the cause. But it could be the genesis of the problem dates back to when those sales people showed up for a job interview. “One major reason sales goals aren’t met is pretty simple, says Dave Stein, coauthor with Steve Andersen of “Beyond the Sales Process: 12 Proven Strategies for a Customer-Driven World. “The sales manager hired the wrong

people to begin with. Stein says a number of factors that can cause that to happen. For example, sometimes sales managers hire someone recommended by a peer or a superior, and disregard their own hiring procedures. He recalls a personal experience where a CEO needed to hire a vice president of sales. One of the company’s board members heavily promoted a favored candidate. “We had a hiring process in place, but the CEO felt compelled to short-cut it, Stein says. “He asked me to interview the

candidate. It took 15 minutes to determine that this candidate wasn't qualified for the job. The CEO hired him anyway.â€? Six months later, the new VP was gone, Stein says, but only after costing the company millions of dollars in lost opportunities and damaged relationships with customers and business partners. Stein and Andersen say other reasons sales managers make hiring mistakes include: • They are behind their territory coverage plan and are in panic mode. After a little staff turnover, they may find themselves down five reps out of a team of 20. “The instinct is to hire fast and furiously, and that's the problem,â€? Stein says. • They hire based on gut feel. Many experienced sales managers claim that they know a good sales rep when they see one, but unfortunately they don’t, Andersen says. Even the most intuitive sales managers who hire on a gut feeling get it wrong more often than less-experienced managers with a solid set of tools, he says. • They fall for candidates who sell them during the interview. Salespeople who go from job to job end up gaining a lot

of job-interview experience. It may take 10 to 20 interviews for them to land a job. If they change jobs every two years, then after 10 years they have been through 50 to 100 interviews and have become masters at selling themselves, Andersen says. • They don’t effectively check references. The references listed on a job candidate’s resume aren’t necessarily the best people to talk with. Instead, Stein prefers to contact former managers, customers and peers who aren’t listed. Some companies’ HR departments may have policies that don’t allow blind-reference checks, though. • They don't use proven tools available to them. Stein says those could include assessments, background checks, simulations and behavioral interviews, all of which can provide valuable information. Finally, Stein and Andersen say even with experienced sales people past performance doesn’t necessarily equal future

performance. “They will be doing a different job for a different company, Stein says. “They’ll be selling different products to different customers, and against different competitors. Any one of those factors could influence how successful the salesperson will be. Dave Stein is a sales consultant and strategist whose expertise has been widely sought after as a top-tier media source. How Team Building Can Help You March Together Employee reactions can be mixed when company leaders announce plans for a teambuilding activity that they hope will improve camaraderie and collaboration in the workplace. Looking For The Perfect Job? You May Have Already Found It What’s your passion? Family? Gardening? Rock climbing? Now think about where your job falls in your list of passions. For many, a job is just a means to an end – it provides money for an education, an SUV, a house and more. But finding passion in your job – whether it’s a clerical or professional position – is key to career success, says Nicole Smartt, author of “From Receptionist to Boss: Real-Life Advice for Getting Ahead At Work. “Everyone can achieve a great career, says Smartt, touting a nose-to-the-grindstone focus to overcome workplace obstacles that keep you from climbing the ladder to more responsibility and a higher

salary. “When you are enthusiastic about what you do, the stress, challenges and bumps in the road are easier to overcome. Passion serves as a driver, the thing that sustains you when things get tough. Smartt knows from experience. She rose from receptionist at a Northern California staffing agency to becoming co-owner and vice president at Star Staffing in Petaluma, Calif., demonstrating how finding that passion and tapping into your strengths can ultimately pay off. “I committed to being the best receptionist I could be, Smartt says. “By committing to being the best and channeling the positive, you can create your own destiny. Smartt offers a few sugges-

tions to help you find the passion in your job and start you on the path of your employment destiny: • Everything is a learning experience. Be observant, ask questions, listen to the answers, take notes and read a lot. “Become a sponge,â€? says Smartt. “Absorb as much information as you can.â€? And don’t be afraid to let hard work trump a traditional education. That doesn’t mean you should forego college – but she recommends you don’t limit your options on schooling alone. “If you want something, fight for it,â€? Smartt says. • Know your strengths. Figure out what you’re good at. Are you creative, competitive, outgoing – or all of the above? How do those strengths translate

to your job? Also be prepared for those strengths to change over the course of your working life or to find strengths you didn’t know you had. • Stay focused. Being disciplined and making sacrifices to achieve your goals is important. “ ‘No’ is the one-word secret to staying on track,â€? Smartt says. • Surround yourself with great people. Find a mentor who readily offers help, guidance and support. “If you want greatness in your life then you need to surround yourself with great people,â€? Smartt says. • Let your engagement at work and happiness show. “Find little things about your job that you really enjoy, and do them very, very well,â€? Smartt advises. “Make sure you bring all of your

skills to your work. You’ll find you enjoy it because you’re good at it. Smartt says people often become frustrated at a job, and instead of trying to make that situation better, they look elsewhere figuring the next job somehow will be the answer. That’s not always the case. “It’s easier to find a perfect attitude than it is to find a perfect job, she says. More Than $1.6 Million to Expand Access to Rural Broadband & Invest in Telemedicine Innovation STATEWIDE U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a total of $1,644,596 in grant funding to four Maine school districts and a rural health care provider through the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Loan and Grant program. The funding will help connect rural communities with medical and educational experts in other parts of the country, increasing access to health care, substance misuse treatment and advanced educational opportunities. “Broadband and telehealth technologies have become critical tools for rural communities, helping connect students with teachers and patients with doctors,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This funding will support rural Mainers in their efforts to bridge the digital divide and actively interact with experts and resources across the country.” The award amounts and recipients are as follows: Maine Regional School

Unit 13 will be awarded $327,466 to purchase video-telepresence equipment to enable real-time distance learning among Regional School Unit #13, the Chewonki Foundation, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, the Catawba Indian Nation, the Monhegan Island School and AOS 93 to provide rural students, educators and adult learners with access to science, technology, engineering, art and math classes. Maine Regional School Unit 87/Maine School Administrative District 23 will be awarded $312,744 to purchase videotelepresence equipment. Maine Regional School Unit 80/Maine School Administrative District 4 will be awarded $239,235 to establish a distance learning network connecting instructors at the Maine Tri-County Technology Center to students in 10 rural schools in Maine; three rural schools in New Hampshire; and one end user site in the Indian Township of Passamaquoddye. Maine Regional School Unit 33/Maine School Administrative District 33 will be awarded $366,459 to purchase video-

telepresence equipment that will enable real-time distance learning activities between schools in Maine School Administrative District #33 (MSAD #33) and its partners. MaineHealth will be awarded $398,692 to install tele-health videoconferencing

carts at six rural medical clinics. Three tele-health videoconferencing carts will be provided to three home health agency sites. The Distance Learning and Telemedicine Loan and Grant program provides funding to rural hospitals, clinics, schools and libraries for equipment and

technical assistance for telemedicine and distance learning. Grant recipients must demonstrate that they serve rural America, prove there is an economic need and provide at least 15 percent in matching funds.

Relax, Wolf says. Team building shouldn’t be a time for co-workers to one-up each other. “My message as a facilitator is about how to be a team,” Wolf says. “I know that some people will catch on more quickly than others. Too often in life, the people who immediately understand something new turn their backs on those who don’t. My goal is for those who ‘get it’ to become mentors for those who don’t.” If drumming seems like an unusual team-building exercise, consider that companies have tried other approaches that are just as novel. A survey by the Creative Group, a specialized staffing service, revealed that some of those included danceoffs, psychic readings, pedicures and indoor surfing. Wolf says there are several reasons why team-building activities are effective. She says they:

Inspire creativity. Team-building efforts can get your brain working in ways that it normally doesn’t. It’s easy in any workplace to get caught up in dull routines and to do everything by rote. When you’re forced to try something different, your senses wake up and your mind is open to new possibilities. Help employees bond in a more relaxed environment. Sometimes you just need to get away from the office and have fun. “Drumming can be a powerful medicine that can balance out the tension in our lives,” she says. That means the next time the boss announces a teambuilding activity, there’s no need to panic – especially if it involves drums. “Anyone can learn to drum,” Wolf says. “People may be skeptical of this, but there really is no such thing as being rhythmically challenged.”

Promote the importance of working together. “I think each of us has the desire to belong to something greater than ourselves,” Wolf says. In a cooperative learning

NIH States $414 Million in Additional FY 2018 Funding Needed for Alzheimer’s Research STATEWIDE U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee, released the following statement after the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced today that $414 million in additional FY 2018 funds will be needed to meet the goal of preventing or effectively treating Alzheimer’s by 2025. This goal was established by the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease, which was created under the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA),

authored by Senator Collins and then-Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN), in 2011. “Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that exacts a tremendous personal and economic toll on individuals, families, and our health care system. In addition to the human suffering it causes, Alzheimer’s costs the United States an estimated $236 billion a year, including $160 billion in costs to Medicare and Medicaid, yet we are spending just a fraction of that amount on research, said Senator Collins. “While we have made significant progress in in-

York Ambulance FAQs YORK Recently, while on call, Crew members of York Ambulance were asked some very basic questions. The questioner is a long time York resident. Then it happened a second time from a long time resident. Since York Ambulance recently launched the 2016 Membership Drive), it seemed a good time to clear up some confusion. Question 1) Was York Ambulance ever called York Volunteer Ambulance Association? Yes. It began on a cold wet day in 1972 when an injured woman lay in the center of York Village, on the road, waiting 45 minutes for an ambulance from Kittery to arrive and transport her up the hill to the hospital, about 100 yards away. A group of concerned residents met to discuss emergency care in York. From this and subsequent meetings, York Volunteer Ambulance Association was born. Question 2) How did it go from YVAA to York Ambulance? Due to a growing community, the demand for full time coverage became critical. Volunteers were being asked to give their time for more and more hours of coverage. Pressure on them became such that full time, better trained personnel became a necessity. York Volunteer Ambulance had to be replaced by York Ambulance. Question 3) How long does the ambulance take to get to the scene? York Ambulance has 3 vehicles housed in York and 2 in South Berwick. In the case of vehicle one being out on a call, YA always has a back-up vehicle

ready to go. Should all vehicles be out on call, YA has agreements with other services to insure coverage. See EMT page 23...

creasing funding for Alzheimer’s research, today’s announcement indicates that we must continue to do more to meet the goals we established through the National Alzheimer’s Project Act. With adequate funding to support the exciting research underway, we can achieve a world where Alzheimer’s can be treated effectively, cured, or prevented by 2025. Last year, following advocacy from Senator Collins, Congress approved a $350 million increase for Alzheimer’s disease research at the National Institute of Aging, bringing the total amount available for Alzheimer’s research in FY 2016 to $991 million – a more than 50 percent increase and almost half-way to the $2 billion-a-year goal that the National Advisory Council has estimated is required. Earlier this year, Senator Collins, a senior member of the Appropria-

tions Committee, strongly advocated for an additional $400 million in funding for Alzheimer’s for FY 2017. This increase has been included in legislation approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee. Approximately 5.4 mil-

lion Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease today, including 37,000 in Maine. It has been estimated that nearly one out of two of the baby boomer generation reaching 85 will develop Alzheimer's if our current trajectory is not altered.

Health & Fitness Tips for Talking with Your Special Needs Child About Tragedy

With recent tragedies in the news, many children, including those challenged with special needs, are exposed to trauma through the media and in conversations. The Episcopal Center for Children (ECC), a nonprofit school serving children with special needs ages 5-14 in the Washington, DC area, offers some advice on how to talk with your child about tragedy. “Children hear information from other children and from the activities around them. Your child will pick up information very quickly after a traumatic event happens, said Dodd White, president

and CEO of ECC. “It’s important for parents and guardians to set a tone of openness and support with their children, and to re-assure children that they are safe. Dodd and the staff at ECC offer the following tips and advice: Use age appropriate language. Talk with your child about the tragedy in a way that is appropriate for his or her age. Elementary schoolers may have questions about their own safety and security. Older children may want more information about the cause of the tragedy or want to talk about how it could be prevented. Share what is appropriate for

your child. Be mindful about the personality of your child. Your child may be a 6-year-old who laughs at monsters in movies and can handle the truth about bad guys being a reality of life. Or your child may be a 10-year-old who cannot handle scary movies, and gets emotional when people are hurt. When answering your child’s questions about tragic news events, let the unique personality of your child be your guide. Let your child know it is ok to talk to you about the tragedy. Spend time talking with your child. Let them know that they are welcome to ask ques-

tions and express their concerns and feelings. You might not know all the answers and it is OK to say that. At the same time, don’t push them to talk if they don’t want to. Let them know you are available when they are ready.

Maintain your family routines. Continue your family’s usual routines for waking up, dinnertime, and bedtime. The familiarity of these routines will help your child.

Be calm. Your child will look to you for cues about how to react. It’s OK for children to see adults sad or crying, but consider excusing yourself if you are experiencing intense emotions.

Promote self-care. Encourage your child to drink enough water, eat regularly, rest, and exercise. And follow this advice for yourself too!

Reassure your child about his or her own safety. Point out factors that ensure your child’s immediate safety and the safety of the community. Review your family’s plans for responding to a crisis. Assure your child that he or she is safe and loved. Limit media exposure. Constant exposure to coverage of a tragedy can heighten anxiety. Do not allow young children to repeatedly see or hear news coverage of a tragedy. Even if a young child is engrossed in play, he or she is likely aware of what you are watching on television – and can become confused or upset. Older children might want to learn more about a tragedy by reading or watching TV. However, avoid repetitive loops of news information once you have the facts. Avoid placing blame. Be careful not to blame a cultural, racial or ethnic group, or people who have mental illnesses.

Spend extra time together. Spend a little more time reading to your child. Take a few extra moments when tucking him or her in at night. If your child is having trouble sleeping, allow him or her to sleep with a light on or to sleep in your room for a short time. Extra hugs and cuddles are good too. All of these actions can improve your child’s sense of security. Watch for signs of stress and anxiety in your child. Look for hyperactivity, irritability, regression, stomach aches/headaches, and separation anxiety. Take steps to relieve stress and anxiety. Get physical. Exercise can relieve stress and help you and your child get a better perspective. Pay close attention to your child if he or she has emotional problems, learning challenges, is going through major changes at home, or has experienced trauma in the past. Children can merge a See TRAGEDY page 37...

Health & Fitness Youth Problem Gambling: Know The Signs The earlier a person starts gambling, the greater likelihood that they will go on to develop a gambling problem in the future. 41 percent of York County High School students report that they have gambled at least once in their lifetime, with 3 percent reporting problems with their family, work, school, or personal life due to gambling. (Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey, 2015). Here are some warning signs of a gambling problem and how to get help: Borrowing or stealing money to gamble; Acting secretly about how he or she spends time; Behavioral change (seems distracted, moody, worried, etc.);

Large, unexplained debts; Withdrawal from the family Young people may start gambling due to stress or boredom, problems at home or school, low self-esteem, loneliness, a need for money, or peer pressure. One of the reasons teens in particular are at high

risk of developing a gambling problem is because of where they are in their development; they tend to have poor impulse control and take risks. For more information about problem gambling, visit www.maine.gov/safebet. If you suspect someone you care about has a problem with gambling, visit 211maine.org or dial 2-1-1 for help. The mission of the Choose To Be Healthy Coalition is to provide and promote opportunities for adults and youth in Southern York County to choose behaviors that help them to achieve their optimal health. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Can you please tell me how to save a word document (windows 10) to the desktop and to a usb memory stick. Just upgraded my operating system and am looking to find a way to do this. Thanks, Alicia Dear Alicia, Saving a Word document in Windows 10 shouldn't be all that different than it was in previous versions of Windows. Let's take a look. Open Microsoft Word and create your document. To save it on your desktop, follow these directions: 1. Click on the "File" tab in the upperleft corner. 2. Click on "Save" in the menu. 3. Click on "This PC" under Save As. 4. Click the up arrow at the top of the right column, next to the word "Documents". 5. Click on "Desktop" in the right column. 6. Type a name for your document in the box that says, "Enter file name here". 7. Click the "Save button. To save a copy of the document on the USB memory stick, follow these directions: 1. Click on the "File" tab in the upperleft corner. 2. Click on "Save As" in the menu. 3. Click on "This PC" under Save As. 4. Click the up arrow at the top of the right column, until it says, "This PC". 5. Double-Click on "your USB drive" in the right column. 6. Click the "Save button. Now, close your Word document and you will have a copy on your desktop and your USB drive. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, First thank you for all your support .My question is: How do you take multiple pictures with the iPhone and send them in one email? Andy Dear Andy, I'm guessing that you know how to take pictures with your iPhone, but you want to be able to attache more than one picture to an email message. Here is how. 1. Once you have taken your pictures, tap the "Photos" icon to open the photos app on your phone. 2. Tap "All Photos" to view and find the photos you

want to send. 3. Tap the word, "Select" in the upper-right corner of your screen, and tap on the photos you want to send. A blue check-mark will appear on the photos you have selected. (Note: because of the size of photos, and limits on email, you only want to select a few pictures). 4. Tap the icon in the lower-left of your screen that looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing up, then tap on the "Mail" icon. 5. A new email message will appear, fill out the To: and Subject:, type a message to go with your photos, then tap "Send" in the upper- right corner of your screen. 6. A message will appear giving you the option to reduce the size of your photos (this will make them easier to send) select a choice and your message will send. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I received your column and I love it! I have had many questions cleared up for me from your advice. My computer is good, but I have so many files that I do not want to lose. I do not know how to back up anything. People tell me to get a flash drive or an external hard drive. I am

at a loss. Please help, You are a Godsend to many many people! Thank you in advance, Ellen Dear Ellen, Thank you for your kind words. You can back up in several ways, the best backup strategy includes a local backup onto something like a USB drive, and a remote backup with a service like Carbonite or Mozy. The reason for the two types is that you are protected both from hard drive failure, and things like fire, theft and destructive malware with the remote backup. Now, lets say you have an external hard drive for backup and you are running Windows 10 on your computer. Here are the directions for setting up a backup. 1. Plug in your USB drive. 2. In Windows 10, click on the start button (looks like a white flag) and click on "Settings", then "Update and Security" and "Backup" in the left column. 3. In the right side of the window, click "Add a drive" and windows 10 will search for and find your USB drive. 4. Click on the drive you want to use the the "Select A drive" section. 5. Now you can configure your backup

by clicking on "More Options". 6. Select how often you want the computer to backup, how long you want to keep the backups, then scroll down to the "Back up these folders" section. 7. Check the folders that are automatically included in your backup, and add or remove any folders you want. 8. Once you are happy with your settings, scroll back up near the top of the window and click "Back up now". Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I use Blue Mail on my Android phone. With that app, I can read email from the three accounts I use: Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! I used to use Outlook Express on my computer to do this, but obviously I can't do that anymore. Is there another email program out there that will consolidate my emails into

one program? Thanks, Cliff Dear Cliff, In my experience, Mozilla Thunderbird is an excellent replacement for Outlook Express. Thunderbird does allow you to work with more than one email account, it has more features than the email program that comes with Windows 8 and it is easy to backup and restore your messages. Thunderbird can be downloaded free of charge at: www.mozilla.org and is fairly easy to install and set up with your email addresses. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at www.askthecomputerlady.com.

ing the red dot from a laser toy or having her belly brushed. How many kitties actually lay on their backs with their belly in the air, hoping to be brushed? She’s so much fun, you’d never guess she is eight years old! But that’s a good thing because she qualifies for our Senior Kitty program. There’s no adoption fee for a qualifying adopter. Spanky like to snuggle in your lap, She tolerates other cats, but because she was declawed by her former owner, she feels intimidated around other kitties. She’d prefer to be a solo kitty and get all your attention. Come in and visit this beautiful, sweet kitty! She is at our adoption center waiting to meet you!

Free Range Dog Park Proposed WELLS Area residents and the Town of Wells are currently working together to create a local dog park that would accommodate both large and small dogs. Their mission is to establish a clean and safe environment, where well-behaved canines can exercise and socialize off-leash in a fenced in, wellmaintained, beautifully developed park. The park would be open to all dog lovers who are willing to uphold the park rules and restrictions. The design would create a protected space

that would be a great alternative to walking our dogs on the beach where we have endangered bird life and would benefit both dog owners and non-dog owners alike. Any discounts, donations or assistance will be appreciated as land options, preferably with a water source, fencing, ground cover, such as wood chips, benches and a disposal station are being researched. Submitted by The Coalition for Free Range Canines. For more information: smacdougall440@gmail.com.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Spicy who arrived at the rescue with a group of cats and kittens, all of which were stressed from being removed from difficult situations. Spicy went into premature labor immediately upon arrival, and sadly her kittens were all still born. In the next apartment to Spicy was another mom cat ready to deliver and during the morning she gave born to five healthy kittens. Unfortunately Mom #2 was unable to provide the food and care necessary to keep her babies alive, so Spicy stepped into the mother role for the five babies. Spicy and the second mom are both doing well and the five three-day-old kittens are happy to have a mom. Spicy will be up for adoption in about nine weeks and her new little family will be available in a couple of months. In the meantime Spicy and her little family would like our readers to know that all these new hungry mouths could use some extra canned kittens/cat, food dry cat food and litter to keep everyone healthy and growing into lively happy babies. If you are able and willing to help with a few extra cans of cat or kitten food, Spicy and all the other mothers with kittens will be eternally grateful as will the staff at Another Chance Animal Rescue. All our furry little clients are spayed or neutered before adop-

tions are finalized, all necessary vaccinations are current (age specific) wormed, front-lined, and have passed their wellness exam. We also have a huge selection of healthy, lively kittens ranging from new born to sixteen weeks old, a good number of young adult cats and a limited number of older cats - all looking to you for a loving family and home. Yard Sale Alert! Our Annual Yard Sale will be held on Wednesday, August 10 - Saturday August 13, 8 a.m. - dark, at the Adoption Center/Foster Home of Marilyn Harley at 251 Country Club Road (Route 4) in Sanford. We are looking for volunteers and donations for this event, even if you only have a few hours to spare. Both cat rooms will be opened for meet and greet and adoptions. Pastor Kezar: Answering the Call

By Carin Lee, Staff Reporter NORTH BERWICK Tim Kezar knew from a young age that he had a “burning desire to serve by getting the message out and helping people to come to God. However, he didn't act on that. Instead he went to business school and into the business world. He stayed active in the church during that time, as an elder and a deacon. Finally, in 2001 he took a step in the direction of the ministry, getting his Masters in Biblical Studies through a long distance program at Trinity Seminary in Newburgh, Indiana. He was still a part of the corporate world, managing accounts for Nestle Food Company, and he and his wife had just had their first child – not an ideal time to change careers. So it wasn't until 2007 that things changed significantly. The minister of his home church in North Berwick received a call to go to North Africa. The pulpit search committee recommended to the membership that seeking a bi-vocational pastor would be the right move at that juncture. At the same time God was working on Kezar's heart to utilize his gifts in an official capacity as a pastor. In March of 2008 he was selected to do so. Now began an intense period in his life, as he worked to

fulfill the requirements of both his corporate job and his ministerial duties. At times, he felt like a circus performer, trying to keep a number of plates spinning all at the same time. He learned time management, delegated tasks on both jobs, gave up his hobbies, and led “a frantic pace. Finally, the corporate job became “just a paycheck, said Kezar. He felt “that season of his life coming to a close. In May of this year he went to the elders and deacons in his church and told them of his desire to become fulltime. On June 5 his church voted unanimously to affirm that decision, a “humbling vote of confidence for him. Pastor Tim Kezar, a North Berwick resident has fundamentally changed his life. At age 48, a time when many people are hitting the stride in their careers, he

has chosen a new vocation. He is now the full time minister at New Covenant Baptist Church in North Berwick. Pastor Kezar has found that the talents he learned in the business world have been helpful in his role as minister: cultivating relationships, building teams, and having a vision that directs his planning. He sees himself as “uniquely equipped to the unique church in North Berwick. The congregation in the New Covenant Baptist Church consists of 110 members. They are a “very giving church, said Pastor Kezar, and have come together to pay a salary that can support him, his wife and their two children. The Pastor finds his inspiration in one particular Bible passage, Mathew 11:28, “Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest. He sees three things that show that society carries heavy burdens: rampant substance abuse, families living at a frantic pace to try to accumulate material things, and Americans depending too heavily on their elected officials to try to meet all their needs. Kezar believes that people are looking for rest, peace and fulfillment not provided in those areas. His answer to that is a challenge to society to check in with their hearts and their souls, look for spiritual growth.

Wells Beach Lighthouse Church and ADD/ADHD Support WELLS All are invited Sundays for beach community worship service, offered by Wells Beach Lighthouse Church shining hope and Gospel truth along the coast of Wells. The church is led by Rev. Pastor Dan White who brings woship into the hearts of the community of Wells and the many visitors it welcomes throughout the year. Worship with traditional hymns and cotemporary musical selections. Pastor Dan White is a graduate of Tennessee Temple University having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Bible and is also a graduate of Bethel Seminary of the East where he earned his Masters degree in Theology/Bible. He has pastored in Massachusetts prior to pastoring in Maine. He is the founding director of Casco Bay Rescue Mission in Portland which is a street mission ministering to and helping those who are homeless, while helping to restore hope to their lives. Pastor Dan has taken post-graduate work at UNH for mental health and is also directing the new Oceanside Community Support and Educational Center directed at addressing community needs and educating on mental health and social issues.

Dan, his wife Tammy look forward to welcoming you to Wells Beach Lighthouse Church where one can come and experience the three B’s, Be-loved, Belong, and Become. The church is presently meeting on Route One in Colonial Square, 952 Post Road, the big blue building where the Subway restaurant is located. They are located above the restaurant and look forward to serving and ministering to the community. For the summer months, services are at 9:30 a.m. then will fall back to 10:30 a.m. after Labor Day. The facility being used is not only for church gatherings but also serves as an awareness, support and advocacy center for mental health neurological disorders and various social issues facing our communities. Here he has begun educating on ADD/ ADHD and is beginning a community support group for parents and/or spouses who have one diagnosed and treated for this neurological disorder. He has also begun educating church leaders on this disorder and is looking to bring findings from research to area educators and the schools. For more information on the support group and services or for further church information you can contact him at 207-251-6967.

With our numbers growing we also have a group of dedicated young girls helping out, all of which have become his favorite play toys. He takes his job as kid-trainer seriously and makes sure the girls are always learning but staying safe. He teaches them about fun and play as well as freedom and

Do not dismiss or minimize your child’s feelings. Your child might worry that someone will come and hurt him or her.
