the piano have become legendary. August 14-16 welcomes back Eddie Clendening (Elvis in 2017’s Heartbreak Hotel, and the original Elvis in Broadway’s Million Dollar Quartet) and his passion for classic Rockabilly
music with a powerful tribute to The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The shows for August 21-23 and August 28-30 are currently sold out, featuring Jonathan Mousset Alonso (Frankie Valli in 2018’s and 2019’s Jersey Boys) and Kyle Taylor Parker (Lola in 2019’s Kinky Boots, the Off-Broadway transfer of Smokey Joe’s Cafe). WASHINGTON, D.C. The president signed into law the Great American Outdoors Act, a bipartisan bill co-sponsored by Senator Susan Collins to provide full funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and to address the deferred maintenance backlog at our national parks, national wildlife refuges, and national forest lands. The legislation previously passed the Senate by a vote of 73 to 25. Following bipartisan efforts by Senator Collins, this landmark legislation provides permanent and full funding for LWCF, and

Hannah Bossi: What Are We Made Of ?
SOUTH BERWICK Physics and philosophy are unlikely bedfellows. But they unite in the existential questions physicist and 2018 Marshwood graduate Hannah Bossi seeks to answer – What are we made of? How did we get here from the very beginning of the universe? “These are very appealing questions to anyone that wonders about the universe,” Bossi
said. “They’re definitely intriguing and challenging — and almost philosophical — questions.” Now, Bossi, a Ph.D. student in experimental particle physics at Yale University, has added fuel to continue in her pursuit of answers — she has just won the Holy Grail for graduate students nationwide: a Graduate Student Fellowship from the National

Science Foundation (NSF). The fellowship frees up funds for Bossi to further her research at the world’s largest experimental facility, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Switzerland. The fellowship also acknowledges her contributions to the community through outreach programs with middle school girls in Connecticut. “It’s definitely a very good thing,” said a humble Bossi from her home in Maine, where she’s waiting out the coronavirus. “It’s good for Colby and for Yale, for my advisors — it’s good for everybody.” The NSF, it seems, agrees. The strength of Bossi’s fel-
lowship application laid in part in the longevity of her project, which she began in 2017 as a Colby junior after receiving her first NSF fellowship, this one through the foundation’s REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program. That first fellowship took her to CERN and “totally changed my outlook on what I wanted to do and what kind of research I was interested in,” Bossi said. With funds from Colby’s DavisConnects, Bossi returned to CERN a second time for Jan Plan her senior year. “Hannah is not only extremely bright and motivated, but she also has a terrific can-do attitude,” said Colby’s Sunrise Professor of Physics Robert Bluhm, Bossi’s honors thesis advisor. “She set high goals for her-

AUGUSTA The Mills Administration announced an adjustment to the limit on large gatherings for outdoor activities from 50 to 100 people, effective August 1. Under the increase, however, no more than five people are allowed per 1,000 square feet in order to maintain appropriate physical distancing. The adjustment in the outdoor gathering limit is in line with Maine’s evidencebased approach to COVID19 restrictions and reflects a growing number of studies that indicate outdoor activities are safer than indoor activities, as

discussed during yesterday’s Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention briefing. The gathering limit for indoor activities remains unchanged at 50 people. Additionally, the requirement to wear face coverings at these gatherings remains unchanged. Studies demonstrate that face coverings, such as masks or shields, can significantly reduce the transmission of COVID-19. “Recent scientific evidence gives us a better understanding of the relative safety of outdoor activities, as compared to indoor activities,” said Jeanne Lambrew, Commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services. “We continue to welcome opportunities for Maine people and businesses to interact in ways that the science indicates pose less risk. ~ News ~ Update Regarding Unsolicited Seeds from China AUGUSTA The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s (DACF) Bureau of Agriculture issued an update for people receiving unsolicited packages containing seeds, purportedly sent from China. DACF is instructing seed recipients to visit www.maine. gov/dacf/seeds and follow the instructions outlined on the form. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service’s Plant Protection and Quarantine Smuggling, Interdiction and Trade Compliance Unit is currently investigating this situation across the nation. In Maine and across the U.S., people are reporting receiving unsolicited packages containing seeds. Recipients are asked to place the seeds and shipping envelope into a resealable baggie and mail them to the following address for identification and processing: USDA-APHIS-PPQ, 15 Iron Road, Suite 1, Hermon, ME 04401.
While the exact types of seeds in the packages are unknown, the seeds are thought to possibly be either invasive or pose a plant health risk, and not believed to be harmful to humans or pets. The seeds could pose a significant risk to agriculture or the environment.
KENNEBUNK Local businesses have been reporting scammers have been calling around the Kennebunks requesting donations for Kennebunk High School “spring sports posters.” This is not a legitimate request! The bill for $189 comes from “Sports Media” in Omaha, NE.
KHS Athletic Director Joe Schwartzman said the school does not solicit donations by phone. KHS Athletic Boosters do collect donations; if you would like to legitimately donate, contact Kennebunk High School c/o Joe Schwartzman via jschwartzman@rsu21.net.

...PARKS from page 1 manently authorize LWCF was enacted with Senator Collins’ strong support. Additionally, Senator Collins joined a bipartisan group in introducing legislation to permanently fund LWCF at $900 million per year. LWCF has only been funded at its maximum authorization level of $900 million twice in its history. Over the last five decades, Maine has received more than $191 million in funding from LWCF. Examples of LWCF funding include Orbeton Stream, a Forest Legacy project in the High Peaks region of Franklin County; and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells, which Senator Collins visited last month to celebrate the reopening of the Carson Trail that had been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the more than 850 LWCF sites in Maine, 650 are community-based projects, from Riverside Park in Fort Kent to Haley Soccer Fields in Kittery. The Restore Our Parks Act, which was led by Senators King, Portman, Warner, and Alexander and co-sponsored by Senator Collins, would establish the “National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund” to reduce the maintenance backlog at our national parks, national wildlife refuges, and national forest lands by allocating existing revenues the government receives from on and offshore energy development. This funding would come from 50 percent of all revenues that are not otherwise allocated and deposited into the General Treasury not to exceed $1.9 billion each year for the next five years.
The seeds are usually sent in white packages displaying Chinese lettering and the words “China Post.” Most recipients say they did not order anything, and that the packaging was labeled as jewelry. Some recipients have reported ordering seeds on Amazon and receiving these seeds.

Paintings of Ruth Bleau on Display at the Berwick Public Library BERWICK The paintings of Ruth Ann Bleau are on display on the walls of the Bewick Public Library through mid-October. During a life when Ruth has been a Peace Corps volunteer, a waitress, Head Start Aid, a US Postal Service letter carrier, and when earning a BA in English from the University of Massachusetts, she has had an underlying passion for art. She has always loved to draw and has taken courses at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, and the Peabody Essex Museum. “Painting has become my joy, my passion, my soul,” Bleau said, “Painting is about feeling emotion…For me the movement of the brush over the canvas is freedom.” Her large, colorful paintings are of landscapes, animals and flowers. She paints very quickly and intensely for two or three hours and then studies the painting for a few days, adjusting the color, contrast, intensities and patterns. Appointments must be made to visit the library via wellstown.org to get your Zoom link invitation. All ages and levels of ability are encouraged to join us for ideas, inspiration and lively conversation.

Partnership to Restore Keystone Species
KENNEBUNK This winter, Kennebunk Land Trust’s Executive Director, Sarah Stanley, visited University of New England (UNE) Environmental Studies Department professor, Tom Klak and his lab to learn about his team’s efforts to restore the American chestnut. The American chestnut was all but obliterated during the last century by an accidentally imported fungal blight that is still killing the few remaining trees today. The blight has wiped out

an estimated four billion chestnuts throughout the eastern US from Maine to Alabama. Klak’s lab has partnered with State University of New York (SUNY), the American Chestnut Foundation, and others to speed breed blighttolerant American Chestnut seedlings in his lab and greenhouse, helping them produce pollen much faster than it would take if they grew naturally. For the first time this summer, this blight-tolerant pollen will fertilize some wild American chestnuts in Maine. Klak has collaborated with the Kennebunk Land Trust and others to establish sites for planting seedlings from the few remaining wild American chestnut mother trees. According to Klak, if the seedlings help restore the American chestnut, it will be the greatest comeback of any tree species in North Ameri-
can history. American chestnuts thrive in sunny locations and therefore, KLT has selected For All Forever, a 111-acre property with two large meadows, as an ideal site for planting. Earlier this summer, KLT stewardship volunteers and Klak planted three seedlings from geneticallydiverse mother trees in the upper meadow. KLT’s summer intern, Caitlin Wiseman, will monitor the trees during her internship. This project emphasizes the value and importance of community conservation. By work-

that was present right after the Big Bang,” Bossi said. The smallest particles imaginable existed in this state of matter: quarks, the building blocks of protons and neutrons (and thus everything we know), and gluons, which “glue” everything together, Bossi simplified. Bossi’s project uses machine learning to study jets, which she described as a shower of particles that traverse through the “soupy medium” of quarkgluon plasma created by particle collisions. It is in this medium, this state of matter, where quarks and gluons move freely and are thus most easily studied. However, the detectors in the collider only see the final product — the jets — Bossi explained, and not the medium, or the collision, itself. To “see” that collision, Bossi uses machine learning to comb through terabytes and terabytes of data looking for the jets’ weak signal in the background noise in order to trace their path. “It’s like seeing where a dart came from based on how it hits the board,” she said.
Here’s where Bossi has an advantage over some of her peers: formal training in computer science at Colby. As a double major in physics and computer science, she leans heavily on computational problem-solving skills learned in CS to solve physics problems. Bossi, a first-generation-tocollege student, is quick to give credit to her mentors for her success. Her involvement in Colby’s Women in Physics group provided essential support from and camaraderie among her peers and their professors, including Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Elizabeth McGrath. Together, they traveled to conferences to present papers and meet new mentors. In 2019 Yale hosted a CUWiP meeting, and Bossi was suddenly the mentor to Colby undergrads. “I always tell my students that physics isn’t about what you know,” she said. “It’s about what you can figure out.” This article was written by Laura Meader, Associate Director of Communications at Colby College.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have not been able to get into my Face Book since I got a new computer several months ago. Still get it on my old computer. I believe the problem may be because I signed up with an old email address because they want to send a text to me at the old address and I can’t receive of course. I hope I’ve been reasonably clear. Thanks for listening and hope you can help. Thank you, Virginia Dear Virginia, It sounds like your old computer has your FaceBook password saved, but you don’t know what it is anymore so you can’t use it on your new computer. To make things worse, the email address that FaceBook has for you is an old one that you no longer have access to. Hopefully, your experience will be a warning for those who don’t keep their account information updated. There are a couple of things you can do in this case. A good computer tech should be able to get the passwords out of your old computer for you, so ask around at your local computer shops. If that doesn’t work, Facebook has a form you can fill out. 1. On the new computer, go to the Facebook login page and click, “Forgot Account” in the top-right corner of the page. 2. Fill out the form with your old email address and click, “Search”. 3. You will have the option for a text or email to be sent to you. If you don’t have access to the old email, and you don’t have access to or never set up a cell phone number, click the link on the bottom that says you no longer have access to them. 4. You will now have the opportunity to answer a security question or get help from friends. If you are still unable to login, Facebook should display a form where you can explain your problem. It might take a few days to hear back from them, but they are usually pretty good at resolving the problem. Once you get back into your account, go into account settings and update your email address and add a cell phone number so that you will be able to access the account in the future. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so very much for all the helpful info throughout the years. You are very much appreciated. I am in my 70s and not very computer savvy. Recently I had a popup on my computer repeating my computer was infected with a virus, and for me not to close my computer as that could damage it. It instructed me to call a phone number. The voice kept repeating that someone was hacking my computer attempting to get my bank account password and my credit card information. I panicked and called the phone number. A man with a heavy Indian accent answered. He asked my name and
zip code. I gave this to him, and he was then able to give me my address. He asked a few more questions and then told me that hackers in Houston, Texas and Beijing, China had attempted to hack my computer several times. He said he would try to help me clear the problem. He asked that I press the windows logo and the letter R at the same time, then asked what was shown on my screen. He then told me to press the windows logo and the letter D and again asked what was shown on my screen. He then told me that he was not able to help me, but he was transferring me to a professional who would be able to help me. I asked if there was a charge for this, and he said there would probably be a small charge. I told him, no that I would see what I could do. Before I could close down, there were some letters and numbers that quickly appeared on my screen. I have McAfee and Malwarebyte. I ran both scans. Can you please tell me what happened when I pressed the windows logo and the letter R and the Windows logo and the letter D? Am I at risk? Did I give this person remote control to my computer? Thank you for your help. Respectfully, Maria Dear Maria, First, I want to thank you for this detailed description of what is becoming a common scam. Usually the scammer takes control of your computer, proceeds to “fix” problems that are not really there, then charge you hundreds of dollars. Sometimes they even lock you out of your computer until you pay up. If I had your name and zip code, I could find your address on any number of websites like www.411.com, www.whitepages.com, and www.anywho. com just to name a few. When you pressed the windows logo key and the letter R, it opened the “Run” dialog box. It allows you to run any program on your computer just by typing in a command. Depending on what the scammer had you type in that dialog box he might have been able to take con-
trol of your computer. I just don’t have enough information to know for sure. When you press the windows logo key and the letter D, that just minimizes all your windows and shows you the desktop. That is probably how he got the pop-up to go away. In the future, if you get this kind of pop-up, just hold down the “Alt” key on your keyboard and then press the F4 key in the very top row a few times. The pop-up will close and if you press F4 enough times, your computer will restart. That usually fixes the problem. NEVER CALL THE NUMBER, IT IS ALWAYS A SCAM Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I read your column and I love it! I have had many questions cleared up for me from your advice. My computer is good, but I have so many files that I do not want to lose. I do not know how to back up anything. People tell me to get a flash drive or an external hard drive. I am at a loss. Please help – You are a Godsend to many, many people! Thank you in advance, Ellen Dear Ellen, Thank you for your kind words. You can back up in several ways, the best backup strategy includes a local backup onto something like a USB drive, and a remote backup with a service like Carbonite or Mozy. The reason for the two types is that you are protected both from hard drive failure, and things like fire, theft and destructive malware with the remote backup. Now, lets say you have an external hard drive for backup and you are running Windows 10 on your computer. Here are the directions for setting up a backup. 1. Plug in your USB drive. 2. In Windows 10, click on the start button (looks like a white flag) and click on “Settings”, then “Update and Security” and “Backup” in the left column. 3. In the right side of the window, click “Add a drive” and

windows 10 will search for and find your USB drive. 4. Click on the drive you want to use the the “Select A drive” section. 5. Now you can configure your backup by clicking on “More Options”. 6. Select how often you want the computer to backup, how long you want to keep the backups, then scroll down to the “Back up these folders” section. 7. Check the folders that are automatically included in your backup, and add or remove any folders you want. 8. Once you are happy with your settings, scroll back up near the top of the window and click “Back up now”. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, First thank you for all your support. My question is: How do you take multiple pictures with the iPhone and send them in one email? Andy Dear Andy, I’m guessing that you know how to take pictures with your iPhone, but you want to be able to attach more than one picture to an email message. Here is how. 1. Once you have taken your
pictures, tap the “Photos” icon to open the photos app on your phone. 2. Tap “All Photos” to view and find the photos you want to send. 3. Tap the word, “Select” in the upper-right corner of your screen, and tap on the photos you want to send. A blue check-mark will appear on the photos you have selected. (Note: because of the size of photos, and limits on email, you only want to select a few pictures) 4. Tap the icon in the lowerleft of your screen that looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing up, then tap on the “Mail” icon. 5. A new email message will appear, fill out the To: and Subject:, type a message to go with your photos, then tap “Send” in the upper-right corner of your screen. 6. A message will appear giving you the option to reduce the size of your photos (this will make them easier to send) select a choice and your message will send. Elizabeth Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth. boston@gmail.com.

Museum’s Digital Southern Maine Steampunk Fair
KENNEBUNK This fair, which is typically the Kennebunk museum’s largest event of the year, attracts audiences locally and from throughout the Northeast. This year, it takes place completely online, on Saturday, August 8. Steampunk is a niche style and aesthetic that re-imagines the future using Victorian steampower and design. The idea has been around for a long time; for instance, Jules Verne employed this “revisioning” of the future in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” More recent viewers of movies like “Wild Wild West” will recognize the blend of technology, the American West, and Victorianism into what has become a significant sub-culture. The museum’s digital Steampunk Fair will feature vendors (who are typically selling

Jonathan West, owner of Jonathan’s Ogunquit, has been a supporter of the arts in all aspects since the day he opened the doors in 1976. Some would say that walking through the dining rooms is like walking through an art gallery. artists like the Drifters, Arlo Guthrie, The Indigo Girls, Tiny Tim, Jonathan Edwards, Paula Poundstone, and more. 2020 is no different. Although several shows have been postponed to new dates due to restrictions on opening, safety, and the travel schedule of each individual artist, Jonathan has personally ensured that his doors stay open and artists have a place to practice their craft. “Over the years we have evolved from a local farm to table restaurant featuring Maine’s best seafood, to a special event destination. Our guests travel from all over to dine with us and enjoy a night of entertainment whether it be with some laughs with my pal, Marley or one of my good friends, Paula Poundstone, Some of the larger bands have opted to change to a duo or an acoustic performance, but no matter what, we are making it work,” states Jonathan. “We spent April and May planning for our new seating map for shows. We went from nearly 250 to the state mandated 50. We had recently purchased brand new chairs and to accommodate our patrons in a more comfortable and versatile way. A main part of our business is dining and a show but we also do our fair share of corporate meetings, conferences and social gatherings like weddings, retirement parties, etc. so we decided to invest in brand new tables and chairs. This was before COVID. It’s OK though. We will continue to keep our doors open for as long as we can and give those comedians, songwriters, musicians, performers, etc. a place to practice their craft. Ogunquit has always been an artist’s town and I will make sure this lives on here at Jonathan’s. “ For more information, visit www.jonathansogunquit.com.

OGUNQUIT After eight years of living on the west coast and New York City, Ric Della Bernarda, a resident of Ogunquit for twenty five years, has returned and reopened his studio in Ogunquit at 257 Berwick Road. Ric is a plein air/fine artist creating paintings of many subjects from landscapes to portraits in an impressionistic style. Although Ric has been away, he has kept his artist presence known by donating paintings to local benefits to include the Frannie Peobody Center, Ogunquit Museum of Art and many others. Health & Fitness Tips to Protect Your Heart in the Heat
PORTLAND With temperatures frequently rising into the 80s and 90s, it’s important to know that heat can be hard on the heart and that individuals risk suffering other health issues like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Doctors recommend using good judgment when it comes
to activities outside in the heat, and to always stay hydrated. During hot weather, it’s important that you take the right precautions: Watch the clock: It’s best to avoid the outdoors in the early afternoon (about noon to 3 p.m.) because the sun is usually at its strongest, putting you at higher

risk for heat-related illnesses; Get off on the right foot: You probably sweat the most in your shoes, so choose well-ventilated shoes and look for socks that repel perspiration. Foot powders and antiperspirants can also help with sweat; Dress for the heat: Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing in breathable fabrics such as cotton, or a newer fabric that repels sweat. Before you get started, apply a water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15, and reapply it every two hours; Drink up: Stay hydrated by drinking a few cups of water before, during and after your exercise. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages; Take regular breaks: Find some shade or a cool place, stop for a few minutes, hydrate and start again; Follow the doctor’s orders: If you are a heart patient, over the age of 50, overweight or just starting an exercise program, be sure to check with your doctor for your best exercise routine. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms when expe-
riencing too much heat. Symptoms of heat exhaustion: headaches, heavy sweating, cold, moist skin, chills, dizziness or fainting (syncope), a weak and rapid pulse, muscle cramps, fast, shallow breathing, nausea, vomiting or both. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler place, stop exercising and cool down immediately by dousing yourself with cold water and
rehydrating. You may need to seek medical attention. Symptoms of heat stroke: warm, dry skin with no sweating, strong and rapid pulse, confusion and/or unconsciousness, high fever, throbbing headaches, nausea, vomiting or both. ...VIDEO from page 12 11 videos support community businesses and the livelihoods of local Mainers “It has been exciting bringing three regions of Maine together for this collaborative campaign. As a fellow Mainer, I hope this campaign can help share the sense of community and what makes Maine so special, and those local travelers are encouraged to rediscover Maine in a new way this summer,” states Rob Holmes, Founder & Chief Strategist of GLP Films. The video series will be distributed across digital and broadcast channels via a collaborative marketing campaign involving
media, influencers, and the travel trade in Maine and nearby states. Highlights of the video series include a hard-working oyster farmer in MidCoast, a family-owned Japanese street food restaurant in Portland, and a story of outdoor heritage in the Lakes & Mountains region. The video series also includes an online travel resource with insider recommendations from each region based on the filming locations and tips from local Mainers in the videos. American Cancer Society Honors Arundel Resident for Support of Their Mission ARUNDEL The American Cancer Society recently presented a Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award to Elaine Morse Hodnett, an Arundel resident. The award is the most honored accolade by the Society in New England, and it recognizes her remarkable accomplishments in support of the Society’s mission to celebrate lives, to save lives and to lead the fight for a world without cancer. $1.4 Million for Mental Health & Substance Abuse WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the Maine State Department of Health and Human Services has been awarded a total of $1,477,750 to support mental health and substance abuse programs throughout the state. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS). “No community is immune from these heartbreaking disorders that have taken a toll on far too many of our peers, friends, and neighbors,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Substance abuse and mental health programs are important to building healthier and more prosperous communities. We welcome this important investment in Maine families.” This investment will support accessible mental health programs across Maine, improve outreach and case management programs, and ensure that scientifically-established findings and practice-based knowledge are applied in preventing and treating mental health and substance abuse disorders. Administered by HHS’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), this funding aims to prevent and treat mental health disorders. SAMHSA also operates a 24/7, national helpline that people can call to find treatment referral resources for mental health or substance use disorders: 800-662HELP (4357).

She and her husband, Steve, have raised more than $20,000 for the Society and have spent countless hours volunteering at various fundraising events. She has been a member of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Greater Portland Event Leadership Team for four years. She was co-chair for one year and has been chair of the committee in 2019 and 2020. In addition, she has been on the leadership team of the Couleur Masquerade Ball in Portland since the event began in 2019. In addition, for the past two years she has personally driven her husband’s truck to Framingham, Mass., a four-hour round-trip, to pick up orders of flowers for the Daffodil Days fundraiser for donors throughout the state of Maine. Plus, Hodnett lends her time at the Society’s information tables
at Portland Sea Dogs games. “Elaine and I formed a bond after the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Greater Portland event in 2018 when she and her husband Steve stayed until the bitter end to help us clean up the event location,” said Reven Oliver, community development manager with the American Cancer Society. “We have a mutual respect that I will always cherish. Elaine is always willing to help from recruiting new Event Leadership Team members and volunteers, soliciting sponsors and auction items, tabling at events in the area, to planning and day-of event coordination. Even through her own breast cancer scare, and through caring for her father who is facing cancer, Elaine consistently shows determination, integrity and compassion in her interactions with the Society.” The Sandra C. BUSINESS & FINANCE MDOL Reminds Employers of Hiring A Vet Program
STATEWIDE The U.S. Department of Labor is reminding employers of the 2020 HIRE VETS Medallion Recognition Program which is now accepting applications. The program is the only federal award that recognizes employers of all sizes who hire and retain veterans in their workforce. The United States Department of Labor, in support of veteran employment, created the program in 2019 in order to recognize businesses who have proven their commitment to hire and retain America’s veterans in good-paying, family-sustaining careers. Award recipients will receive a certificate and digital images of the medallion for use as part of their marketing and
promotional activities which will recognize them as a veteranfriendly business. Over 400 employers were nationally recognized during the 2019 HIRE VETS Medallion recognition period. The Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) believes this is a great opportunity for employers to celebrate their commitment to the veteran community. The list of medallion recipients, or “Veteran Ready” employers, is published each year, signaling to veterans and transitioning service members which companies are committed to supporting them. It provides the employer with additional outreach as well. The U.S. Department of Labor-Veterans Employment and Training Service (US DOL/

Real Estate Sales Ease While Prices Rise AUGUSTA The number of sales of single-family homes in Maine is down slightly in June but prices remain on the rise. Realtors across the state sold 1,720 homes in June—78 fewer homes than a year ago – a 4.3% decrease compared to June 2019. The Median Sales Price (MSP) for homes sold in June reached $249,000, an increase of 4.15% compared to June 2019. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “As Maine navigates COVID-19, our real estate industry has adapted,” says Tom Cole, 2020 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS® and Managing Broker of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Masiello Group in Brunswick. “The June statistics show improvement and indicate that sellers, buyers, and our industry partners are adjusting to Maine’s health and safety protocols and have growing confidence to transact real estate business. “Real estate sales will help lead our economic recovery. The real estate industry provides employment for professionals involved in the transaction, including REALTORS®, lenders, appraisers, building inspectors, surveyors, title and closing agents, cleaning and yard main-
tenance providers, and building contractors. In addition to their property purchase, buyers make home improvements and upgrades, and their spending creates economic ripples throughout their communities.” Nationally, sales decreased 9.9% in June 2020 compared to June 2019. According to the National Association of Realtors, sales of existing homes across the country eased 9.9%, while the National MSP rose 3.5% in June to $298,600. Realtors in the regional Northeast reported a sales dip of 27.9% comparing June 2020 to June 2019, while the regional MSP increased 3.6% to $332,900. “Historically, 75% of buyers of single-family homes in Maine are from Maine, followed by seven percent from Massachusetts and four percent from New Hampshire,” adds Cole. “This buyer zip code data remained consistent for second quarter 2020 as the pandemic began unfolding. Maine offers a quality of life that appeals to those living in highly populated and more congested areas of the U.S. We’ll be watching for these trends and will welcome new residents to Maine.”

He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and has an interest in global dental health. He has gone on outreaches to Kathmandu, Nepal and Kingston, Jamaica where he was able to directly treat the needs of the local children as well as teach pediatric dentistry to the local dental students. White Barn Inn Opens Little Barn KENNEBUNK White Barn Inn, Auberge Resorts Collection in the coastal town of Kennebunk, has now opened Little Barn, a lively new restaurant that brings local Maine farmstead and fisheries to the table. Helmed by acclaimed chef Matthew Padilla, Little Barn features a selection of modern New England fare in a setting bustling with energy from the nearby harbor, where freshly caught Maine seafood is brought in daily. Long known as one of the top culinary destinations in New England, White Barn Inn looks forward to welcoming both guests and locals alike with Little Barn’s casual and convivial approach to Maine dining. “With a welcoming and friendly sense of New England hospitality, Little Barn will provide both our guests and local visitors with a new way to taste the many distinct flavors and ingredients of Maine,” said general manager Daniel Braun. Little Barn features both a Provisions menu, with a selection of classic dishes, and a dailychanging menu of seasonal spe-
Pioneers in Education: Blending with Technology SOUTH BERWICK School leaders, teachers, educator reformers, media reporters, parents, and policymakers recognize that students have a wide range of needs and interests. Students learn best in varied ways and at different times and rates. They greatly benefit from educators’ efforts to individualize their learning to meet their personal needs. Less understood is the extent to which a wide range of schools are responding to students’ needs and interests by offering new school and course options, and in particular, the ways in which traditional public schools are part of the solution. Extremely creative solutions to diversifying instruction using technology in classrooms exist throughout America. However, there is an imperative for bigger, broader, more inclusive representation of strategies being employed to integrate blended and online courses, programs, and options for K-12 students. As the first-ever public charity focused on access to quality education, Future of School (FoS) is dedicated to mobilizing change in American K-12 education
from a one-size-fits-all system to one that ensures all students reach their unbounded potential. The organization has provided scholarships to students who have completed online/blended learning courses in a variety of schools since 2016. Their Student Scholarship Program rewards students for their courage to forge new learning pathways, giving them greater financial means to continue their education in whatever post- secondary school they choose. Through their Innovative Educator Prize, pioneering educators are empowered with grant funding that enables them to bring programs and tools into the classroom to transform the learning experience. An increasing number of
students are enrolling in online and blended schools and courses to meet their needs on their own. The reasons cited include: Flexibility, above grade-level courses, increased course options, personalized learning, extracurriculars, more individual attention, physical and mental health, scheduling challenges, rurality, advanced learner, extra responsibilities. The new instructional models continue to emerge in response to the demand from students. 2019 Scholarship Winner, Noble Mushtak (pictured) from Marshwood High School (MHS), wrote, “I have used online courses to explore a wide variety of subjects, from differential equations to macroeconomics, through MIT Open Courseware… Maine’s AP4All program… and Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. I did a bunch of independent studies in my high school that are all on my transcript. I never get bored and am always encountering new intellectual challenges. In general, online classes permit students to pursue their own interests [and] expand educational opportunities.” Marshwood High School
cials, presented on a chalkboard menu. Chef Padilla’s rotating selection of seasonal items highlights the best of Maine’s local farms and seafood. To pair with Little Barn’s Maine-driven fare, the bar menu will offer a variety of hand-crafted cocktails with ingredients that evolve with the season. Little Barn will also feature wines by the glass and a curated selection of Maine-brewed beers. Little Barn is located in the property’s historic barn, an original building on the nearly 100-year-old property, which served as inspiration for the ho-
tel’s name when it opened 46 years ago. Now fully renovated as part of a full hotel redesign led by New York-based interior designer Jenny Wolf, Little Barn’s interior features a playful New England sensibility, with nautical inspiration pulled from Kennebunk’s seaside location. A hand-drawn mural from artist Dean Barger anchors the restaurant’s intimate interior, which features 40 indoor seats and 12 outdoor seats on a charming patio overlooking the pool. Little Barn is open daily 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. For more information, call 207-967-2321.
is a comprehensive public high school that serves 716 students in grades 9-12. As David Lietz, MHS’s Gifted and Talented (GT) Specialist, emphasized, “Marshwood High School has an extensive curriculum that really does a great job in meeting most of our students’ needs. About 20% of our students enhance their learning at some point during their time at Marshwood by supplementing with a variety of online, dual enrollment, or independent study accelerated options. The quote from Noble really does a good job of summarizing many of the options that we offer for all of our students, not just those in the GT Program.” When students are interested, they meet with their guidance counselor to see what courses would work to address their needs. Once they choose their course(s), students often work with a mentor within the building who supports their learning. MHS also participates in the Early College for Maine Program, which allows access to any online college courses offered by the University of Maine system. York County Community College provides dual enrollment instructors at MHS to teach college courses to
students. There are literally hundreds of accelerated online learning options in which students can participate. Students who attend Marshwood from Rollinsford, NH, can take college-level and other accelerated courses through the Virtual Learning Academy Charter School. The science fiction author William Gibson wrote in 2003, “The future is already here — it’s just not evenly distributed.” At that time, nearly two decades ago, these new educational models were emerging but not yet proven. Now, in 2020, it’s fair to say that the future of education is here. The future of education lies in pioneering online and blended schools and courses, and the use of online tools and resources in the full range of schools. However, many students, parents, and school leaders have not yet discovered the extent to which proven innovations are improving education right now, and can be extended to even more schools and students. Future of School hopes to shine a spotlight on the successful schools and a path forward to helping all students. For more information, visit www.futureof. school.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Alan loved being with all his cousins and siblings. After graduation from both Malden High, in 1950, and a year at Chauncey Hall, in 1951, he went on to study electrical engineering at MIT, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1955. Alan went straight to work for the Central Intelligence Agency, 1955 – 1959, in a group called Technical Services. Alan married his high school sweetheart, Helen L. Reid, in 1956. They moved to Washington, DC, to both work at the CIA. It was a sweet time in their life with friends and their very secret work. The birth of their son Paul in 1958 brought them back to the Boston area, settling in Winchester, MA, where they went on to have two more children, Christopher and Suzanne. The family eventually moved to Harvard and then Groton, MA. Alan’s career took many turns, including building simulator cockpits for Boeing 747s. A layoff in the early 70s led him to get involved with water treatment. He subsequently bought a water treatment business in 1971, which he worked in with his son Paul for over 45 years, retiring in December 2019. Alan was a philosopher, poet and a great thinker about the planets. He wrote over 2000 poems and self-published a book, “Grandpa Alan’s Teddy Bear Poems”. This achievement touched more lives than we can count. Those who would stop and spend a moment or two with Alan would be exposed to his discovery about the tip of the earth and many more aspects to our solar system. It was an uphill battle for anyone in the academic world to see his perspective, but he continued to pursue an in-depth dialogue up until his death. This was a big life lived by a man who loved performing in
~ Obituaries ~ local musicals with his son Paul, playing bridge with his wife Helen or cribbage with any one of his children and grandchildren. He gave everyone he met something to think about! Alan is predeceased by his wife Helen in 2018, and survived by his children: Paul and wife Pattie of Port St. Lucie, FL, Christopher and wife Janet of Groton, MA, and Suzanne L.F. Gagnon of Portland. Alan was very proud of his grandchildren: Christopher A. Friot II and wife Irie of East Boston, MA, Jillian A. Friot of Memphis, TN, and Cooper J. Gagnon of Kennebunkport. Alan was also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southern Maine Health Care of Biddeford. Services will be private. David N. Heald, 71 HOLLY HILL, FL – David N. Heald, formerly of Springvale, died July 9, 2020 in a hospice care facility. David was born September 5, 1948, in Littleton, NH, the son of James and Phyllis Hennessy Heald. He and his family moved to Springvale in 1961 when his parents bought the L.H. Carll Funeral Home, and several years later, later the Hurd Funeral Home. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1967 and from the University of Minnesota in 1972, with a degree in Mortuary Science. David returned to Springvale to work with his Dad. The funeral home was renamed Heald Funeral Home in 1976, and David eventually took over the business in 1982. In 1986, David married Eileen Stokes, and became a devoted step-father to her daughters, Kristen and Lauren. David had an “inquiring mind” and told Eileen he didn’t dream at night… He got work done in his mind. He probably annoyed many a tradesperson when he carefully observed every task they undertook on his property, wanting to master each trade himself. As a funeral director, he was on the front line of identifying the need
for proper disposal of medical waste. Subsequently, he and his partner, Richard Shaw, formed Maine Biomedical Service, the first and only licensed medical waste incinerator in Maine. He also designed, produced and “attempted” to market folders for medical certificates. When he didn’t sell any, he was comfortable saying it was not a failure, but a learning experience. Undoubtedly his favorite endeavor of all was opening Ridge Ribs Barbecue at Shaw’s Ridge, with partners Eileen and Richard and Cindy Shaw. He fully enjoyed experimenting with all things BBQ, and enjoyed the social interaction with customers. David sold Heald Funeral Home in 2005, after 33 years in funeral service. He and Eileen moved to Florida where they partnered in many endeavors, including caring for their aging parents. David never quite retired. He dabbled with sign making; was a sales rep for Solar Fit; and he attained his real estate license. He was a member of Union Congregational Church, UCC of Holly Hill; and was active in the UCC Florida Conference Disaster Ministry. He also managed the Volunteer Housing Facility at the church. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Eileen; step-daughters Kristen Brooks of Berkeley, CA, and Lauren Hatfield and husband James of Richmond, CA; grandchildren Mazi, Finn, and Pippin Brooks, and Augusta Hatfield; sister Deborah Oberg of York; nephew Eric Oberg and wife Christie of Eliot; niece Thayer Wollenberg and husband Patrick of Melrose, MA; grandnephews and grandnieces Camden, Annika, and Libby Oberg, and Heidi and Henrik Wollenberg. During this time of COVID-19, a private service will be held. To leave a message of condolence for the family, please visit www.autumngreenfuneralhome.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 1050 Daytona Avenue, Holly Hill, FL 32117. The Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak Street in Alfred, is respectfully handling arrangements. • • • • • • • • • •
Doris “Dottie” Walter Laber, 84 WELLS – Doris Walter Laber passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, June 25, 2020 at Avita of Wells. Preceded in death by her parents, Doris Evans Walter and Frank Orson Walter, and beloved husband, Larry J. Laber. Survived by adoring sister Lynn Walter Meier and brother-in-law Paul Meier of Asheboro, NC, and many loving
nieces and nephews, Melodie Laber Chapman (CJ Lisi) of Portsmouth, NH; Marci Laber Poulin (Ron), Wells, Mike Meier (the late Yung Chi) of Sophia, NC, Jodi Meier (Mike Overly) of Asheboro, NC, Carrie Meier (Kevin Wetter) of Belmont, NC; a great nephew, Timothy Chapman (Lucyana) of Kittery; and great-niece, Acacia Rose Overly of Asheboro, NC. Doris Ann Walter was born on March 4, 1936 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Dottie lived in several states before her family settled in Avondale, Maryland where she graduated from Northwestern High School in 1954. In 1958, she graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in Journalism. Writing and editing were passions of Dottie’s. She sometimes wrote the neighborhood column for the Prince George’s Post while still in high school. During college, she worked part time on Campus for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Extension Service. After getting her degree, Dottie worked full time for the U.S.D.A. in Washington D.C., which led to travel and projects around the country (Minnesota, Iowa, and Wyoming) using her journalism skills. On June 9, 1963, Dottie became Doris Walter Laber when she married Larry J. Laber. Their wedding took place at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Rainier, Maryland where Dottie had sung in the choir. Larry was working on an advanced degree at the University of Chicago, so she moved there and began her side work – proofreading and typing Larry’s many research and thesis papers as he obtained multiple additional degrees. They lived many places including Chicago twice, Athens, Georgia - where Dottie wrote for a daily newspaper; Montana, Wyoming, New Hampshire, and Orono, Maine. Along the way, Maine became their homebase. Most of those years, and in most places, Dottie continued working for the U.S.D.A. using her treasured journalism skills. She enjoyed visiting farms and farmers, and writing for publications on soil conservation. Devoted to family, Dottie helped care for her mother and a couple of aunts. She retired, in part, to concentrate on caring for her Aunt Alice. Dottie loved being an aunt herself and took
special care to keep lists of individual’s interests so that she could find and give uniquely tailored birthday and Christmas gifts to each of her nieces and nephews. Cats were also special to Dottie, especially Mincemeat and Tris, then later Feather and Duster. Camping, canoeing, cross country skiing, hunting, and traveling were all favorite activities. Dottie and Larry visited many places including Alaska, Australia, and many trips to Chincoteague Island and the Grand Canyon. In retirement, Dottie took up running and was very active in the local runner’s club, even authoring its newsletter. Dottie was also active in the local chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), to which she devoted much of her time. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doris Walter Laber may be made to: Animal Orphanage, 71 Airport Road, Old Town, ME 04468 or Sarah’s House of Maine, 346 Main Rd, Holden ME 04429 Due to COVID-19, there will be no public memorial service. The family will hold a virtual celebration of life. • • • • • • • • • •
Lucy Jane MacLeod, 81 WELLS – The family of Lucy MacLeod sadly announce her death on July 9, 2020 at her home on Drakes Island, formerly of Beverly, MA, from Alzheimer related causes. She was 81. Lucy was born February 11, 1939 from good Yankee stock, with a genealogy heavy with early Massachusetts North Shore settlers. She took great pride in her Rockport roots, and always spoke fondly of her small seaside community. She graduated from Rockport High School in 1956 and went on to obtain a nursing degree from Beverly Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. During this time, she was introduced to a dashing basketball coach, Bob MacLeod. They would later marry on June 26, 1960. Together they bought a house on Jackson Street in Beverly, where they lived for 40 years, raising four children, a See MACLEOD page 24...

...MACLEOD from page 22 couple of dogs and several cats. Nursing was both a profession and a passion for Lucy. She provided excellent and personal care to her many patients through the years; she was exceptionally proud of her profession. She took time out to be an at-home mom with her children through the 1960s, and then returned in the late 1970s as a floater at Beverly Hospital. Lucy preferred working nights, when the quiet of the floor allowed for more personal attention to those who needed it. She held many hands and offered both medical and supportive care. Lucy and Bob retired in 1999 to Drakes Island, Maine where Bob was the executive director of the Drakes Island Improvement Association (DIIA) for many years. There they became year-rounders, enjoying the beauty and quiet of winters, as well as the salty warmth and energy of summer, gorgeous crisp falls, and muddy springs. Lucy loved to read and influenced us all to love a good story. She was always ready to give and receive a good book recommendation. A great Scrabble opponent, Lucy was always quick with
small words for high points. She taught us that sometimes the long words were the weakest. Lucy is predeceased by her parents Raymond Goodale Hale and Janette Francis Hale (Brock), both of Rockport. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert Cole MacLeod (87), and their four children and families: Douglas MacLeod and husband Jeff Freitas of Carmichael, CA, Jane MacLeod and partner David Mirandi of Beverly, MA, Daniel MacLeod and wife Joanne of Kennebunk, and Andrew MacLeod and wife Beth of Kennebunk. She is also survived by her younger brothers, William Hale of Rockport, MA, and Raymond “Tinker” Hale of Gloucester, MA. Lucy had a full life surrounded by her family that also included her grandchildren, Sarah Devlin and husband Mark, Emily Ascarino and husband John, Cole MacLeod, MacKenzie MacLeod, Danah MacLeod, Collin MacLeod, and recently Robby MacLeod. New additions, great-grandchildren Finn Devlin and Hazel Ascarino always brought big smiles. The family will be holding a private service and burial at a later date. The family is so thankful
for the loving care and at-home support from her caregivers, Tigg Freigh, Kathy Farber, Rolly Legere, and Kasie Kinney, as well as Compasses Hospice. Donations in Lucy’s name can be made to: The Maine Alzheimer’s Association (www. alz.org), 383 US Route One #2C, Scarborough, ME 04074. Brenda Marcia (Brooks) Mee, 79 BERWICK – Brenda Marcia (Brooks) Mee, a longtime resident of Berwick, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2020, at her home with
her family by her side. Brenda was born in Berwick on March 20, 1941 daughter of William and Ruby (Tibbetts) Brooks. She graduated from Berwick High School and worked at General Electric in Somersworth, NH, and retiring after 25 years. Brenda took care of her grandchildren and her late mother, Ruby. Brenda loved to sew, enjoyed gardening, was a keen animal watcher and loved spending time with her family and friends. She will truly be missed by all. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband of 43 years, Chester M. Mee, who died in 2016, as well as her sister, Gloria Laderbush. Brenda is survived by three beloved daughters, Michele Tobin (husband Patrick and daughter Shawna) of Berwick, Roxanne Reynolds (husband David and son Staff Sergeant Joshua, USAF) of Milton, NH, Lisa Meloon (husband Dean and sons Zachary and Andrew) of Rochester, NH; sister Audrey Vaillancourt of Berwick; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 8, at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick. Due to COVID-19
safety requirements, all are reminded to wear a mask during the service. Should friends desire, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice in Brenda Mee’s memory. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Miss Boo has added so much comic relief during the rigors of moving while dealing with a pandemic. This spry, long-haired black and white beauty was returned to us recently. After two happy years together, her adoptor had to return her, due to moving to a place that did not allow kitties. So Miss Boo came back to Safe Haven and settled into our cheery farmhouse at Cattail Farm. She took up residence as a greeter. She is so very dear and sweet. She simply wants your

attention and a few cuddles. She likes to play and is a sort of showoff about it. As she plays, she stops and looks at you to see if you are watching. She seems to be waiting for praise or encouragement. She’s so silly, so happy, craves companionship, loves to be held and brushed and is so deserving of a happy home. Because she originally came into our organization as a rescued stray, our vet can only guess her age at about seven or older. She is also very easy to care for because she only eats dry cat food, due to a canned food intolerance. If you’re in-

Olympic Gold Medalist Visits York Golf & Tennis Club Annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta YORK Tennis Hall of Famer and Olympic Gold Medalist Gigi Fernandez was at the York Golf and Tennis Club to put on her “Gigi Method” doubles clinic recently. The 17-time Grand Slam doubles champ led a soldout event of players with her instructional doubles’ clinic. The Gigi Method helps recreational players understand the art and science of doubles. This was the first clinic event Gigi has been able to do since February and she loved her first Maine experience. Lisa Wilcott, Tennis Director at the York Golf and Tennis Club, was contacted by Gigi this past winter about coming to York to present her clinic to the club. Also, at the time, Lisa had become a member of the Board of Directors of the Tennis Without Borders Organization. She saw this as a great opportunity to collaborate with Gigi on this project as well as providing a valuable and special tennis experience to all who participated.
