Pediatric Cancer Nonprofit To Receive Tuesday’s Tithings WELLS / OGUNQUIT Two years after opening a retreat center in Ogunquit for families that have experienced childhood cancer and child loss, a local nonprofit is getting a helping hand from one of Wells’ most iconic businesses. On Tuesday, August 13, Congdon’s After Dark will host its weekly “Tithing Tuesday” to benefit Rett’s Roost, which leads free, healing weekend retreats for families that have, or have lost, a child with cancer. The event will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. at Congdon’s Donuts, located at 1100 Post Road (Route 1) in Wells, with 10% of all foodtruck sales going directly to Rett’s Roost. Together with her husband, Jim, Deana Cavan founded Rett’s
The family of Jim and Deana Cavan who founded Rett’s Roost.
Roost in 2015 following the death of the couple’s first child, Everett, who died from a malignant rhabdoid tumor, an extremely rare and aggressive form of pediatric cancer.
“We started this organization to give families exposure to holistic tools that may help alleviate the trauma, stress, and grief of their experience, whether they have anxiety about relapse
or they are bereaved. It’s about giving families a chance to connect with others who’ve gone through something similar. We love the work we do, and we’re honored to have such an amazing community of people behind us.” To date, the organization has hosted close to 20 retreats — all of which are offered free of charge to attending families. After initially running all of their retreats off site, in 2018 the Cavans found a home in Ogunquit to serve as a permanent headquarters. Each retreat serves between four and six families (15-20 people). Retreat activities include massage, Reiki, music therapy, meaningful arts and crafts, beach excursions, kayaking trips, horseback-riding, one-on-one counsel-
ing sessions, and family photos sessions, just to name a few. According to the Congdon’s Donuts’ website, Tithing Tuesday was launched to “support organizations that help those in need and make the world a better place to live, particularly our local community.” The Cavan family and a few of their Rett’s Roost volunteers will be on hand to greet supporters and share information about their organization. They’ll also be conducting a raffle, with prizes including a two-night stay at the Hartwell House in Ogunquit. Local band Sidestep Jazz will be playing their eclectic blend of jazz standards, Bossa Nova and Latin beats from 6 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.rettsroost.org.

He will discuss how the tragic loss of this submarine impacted submarine safety going forward
and how the 129 men who lost their lives will be memorialized at Arlington National Cemetery. Some of the families who lost loved ones will also speak, and a 20-foot model of the Thresher will be on display (see photo). Sharks Increasingly Seen Off Coast SEACOAST Locals and tourists alike have been sighting sharks in the waters off the beaches this summer. Although this is not unheard of, the frequency of sightings seems to be increasing. Many wonder whether the difference is due to the warmer water caused by climate change while others suspect the sharks are seeking new feeding areas. In June, the York Police Department announced the presence of a basking shark off
Long Sands Beach. On August 1, the Town of Kennebunkport announced a possible Great
Moody Beach heading towards Ogunquit. According to an article on www.nationalgeographic. com, UNE scientist James Sulikowski believes their increasing arrival is a combination of possibilities. For example, studies have found that great white shark populations have been on the rise in the northeast since 2014. He suspects they’re looking for food since See SHARKS page 3...

~ News ~ ...SHARKS from page 1 they primarily prey on pinnipeds like seals. However, most sharks will migrate to warmer waters to expend less energy, so if our northern waters stay warmer longer, climate change may also be to blame. Great Whites are a little different since they are endothermic, regulating their body temperature so they don’t have to rely on their environment for warmth. In this case, also mentioned in this article was Gregory Skomal, a scientist from the Massachusetts Marine Fisheries Department, who sees the growing shark populations as a conservation success story. Great whites as well as seals are both protected species, their numbers returning to historical levels. ...MUSIC from page 2 Portsmouth, NH has donated a brand new guitar that will be raffled off along with other items during the event. Tickets are available at the Leavitt Theatre. Advance tickets are $10 for a four-night pass, $15 day of show at the box office. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) provides great information on their website at www.atlanticwhiteshark. org and remind beachgoers that shark bites on humans are rare. Many local town beaches and police departments may temporarily close beaches to swimming or post shark advisory signs such as flags to give sharks their space. For beachgoers everywhere along the coast, AWSC reminds people that sharks hunt for seals in shallow water and to avoid areas where seals are present and to also avoid areas where schools of fish are visible. Best practices include staying close to shore; to swim, paddle, kayak and surf in groups; avoid murky or low visibility water; limit splashing and to adhere to all signage and flag warnings at beaches and following all instructions given by lifeguards. Scientists continue to research sharks to better understand how humans can coexist with them. AWSC has recently launched a new study where sharks will be tagged with devices to provide data that will be used to improve coastal warnings. “We’re essentially going to be giving iphones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really
fine scale,” explained AWSC research scientist Megan Winton, on their website. Local town and police departments appreciate the public’s vigilance in reporting shark sightings and encourage readers, with heightened awareness, to continue enjoying the beaches this summer. Hope Haitian Choir at Messiah Christian Church
WELLS “Amazing”, “so inspiring”, “what beautiful children”, “what beautiful voices”, are the comments heard after almost every concert by the Hope Haitian Choir. This non-traditional choir, made up of fifteen young people, ranging in age from 10 – 18, are touring the eastern U.S. this summer, sharing their joy in a variety of venues and churches. The Choir began seven years ago, with a new group of children coming each summer. Their exceptional voices, combined with energetic dancing, effectively communicate a message of hope. Though many of these young people come from very difficult circumstances in their home country of Haiti, they demonstrate a buoyant spirit which finds its source in their genuine faith. Under the direction of Barb House of Boothbay, Maine, the choir has sung at Christian conventions in Haiti, on radio and television stations, at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey, and at a variety of both indoor and outside venues from Maine to Georgia. Auditions are held each fall in Port-au-Prince, with a network of churches sending young people who are musical-
ly talented to a central location. They are not only evaluated on their singing and dancing abilities, but also on character and willingness to work diligently. Training begins in Haiti, with final rehearsals for three days after they arrive in the U. S. and before beginning the tour, which involves 7-8 concerts each week. The songs are in English, Creole, and French. Many are original material, with the goal of encouraging and inspiring the hearts of those who listen. Choir leaders also make a concerted effort to develop leadership skills, confidence, and a passion for serving others, even at these young ages. The hope is that these children will make a positive impact wherever they go, and that each one will gain a vision for how God can use him/her in the future. The concert will be held at Messiah Christian Church, 2700 Post Road (Route 1) in Wells at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13. There is no cost, but an offering will be taken to help with the choir costs as well as to help fund projects in Haiti. CDs and other items will be available as well. For more information, call 207985-9287 or visit www.hopehaitian.com.

Health & Fitness Dancing Raises Money for Children ARUNDEL A record number of sixteen southern Maine businesses sponsored MidSummer Night’s Soiree and more than 150 guests gathered for a beautiful and memorable July evening of cocktails, conversation, community, comedy and music. This vital fundraising effort will help keep the Center for Grieving Children’s peer support services available to children and families in Southern Maine at no cost for as long as needed. Maine Humorist Gary Crocker and the CIEE House Band — the Maine talent who donated their performances to the cause — completely captivated the crowd. Bill Kany, Senior Vice President/Director of Legal & Governmental Affairs of Saco and Biddeford Savings Institution and Center board member and Chair of the MidSummer Night’s Soiree Committee, served as emcee, sharing with guests the Center’s three decade history of support for children and families experiencing grief and loss in Southern Maine. He introduced the new president of the board, Julie Grosvenor, MD, physician and Assistant Chief Medical Officer of Southern Maine Health Care in San-
ford, who shared her connection to the Center’s mission. Anne Heros, executive director of the Center, explained the Center’s unique role in serving and families confronting loss, change, and grief when someone close to them dies or is seriously ill. Bill Kany said, “Gary Crocker is one of the finest, funniest gentlemen I have ever met, whose message of healing through humor is incredibly parallel to what the Center does every day.” An avid outdoorsman, Gary is best known for his Maine-based comedy, which he uses to convey the powerful message: “Laughter Heals.” A born Mainer and Navy Veteran of Vietnam, Gary has contributed to The Maine Event for the last four years on public television and does short humor segments on Wreaths Across America radio show every Friday morning. When asked why he’s using his special talent to support the Center, Gary says, “In my opinion, we are placed on this planet to care for and support each other. This is especially true during difficult times and I can little imagine and only marginally comprehend the depth of grief a child is feeling at the loss of a loved one.” To learn more, visit www. cgcmaine.org.

Health & Fitness 10 Tips for Weight Loss and Fitness Summer is the perfect time to get moving again, so why not take advantage of the next few months to get your body fit and lean before holiday dining returns. William Smith, MS, NSCA, CSCS, MEPD, a recognized authority on fitness and exercise and author of numerous publications, offers the following healthy tips. START MOVING That’s right. Get up and get yourself moving, whether it’s walking, swimming, biking, or running. Try to do at least 15 minutes a day of aerobic activity. It is essential for good health and will burn excess calories. GET OFF THE SCALE Americans are notoriously obsessed with body weight. Weigh yourself once and measure against the BMI (Body Mass Index). Then put your bathroom scale in the closet for a few months. Scales can be inaccurate, misleading, and a psychological deterrent to success. TARGET FAT AND FAT WILL LOSE Excess body fat killer. Learn how to sure and manage your fat percentage by using
is a meabody body
fat calipers. Body fat measurement is a more accurate indicator of health and wellness than weight alone. DO IT FOR THE HEALTH BENEFITS Shift your fitness focus to your health, not just your appearance. You can add years to your life and reduce major health risks by following a sound nutrition and exercise program. And you’ll look better and feel better too! AVOID “GET THIN QUICK” SCHEMES If it sounds to good to be true, it is. From “fat burning” diet pills (dangerous) to electronic ab stimulators (really!), the promise of results without effort is just a marketing gimmick designed to reduce your wallet--not your waistline. CUT OUT THE SODA AND SAVE Soda adds useless (and expensive) calories to your diet. Just drinking water rather than soda can put an extra $2-3 in your wallet each day. Over one year, that adds up to over $1,000 saved. And 100,000 fewer calories consumed!
the other is a recipe for failure. Just because you walked for 30 minutes doesn’t mean you can reward yourself with a pint of your favorite ice cream! REDUCE THE CALORIES From super sized meals at fast food restaurants to enormous servings at our favorite steakhouse, we are on the receiving end of an abundance of calories. Weight reduction is a caloric formula. Calories in (through eating) versus calories out (through activity). It’s that simple. Stick with smaller portions. STRETCH YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS For many of us, winter is a time of sedentary living. Now that you are ready to commence a plan of exercise, make certain you stretch your muscles for at least one whole week before starting. This way, your muscles will be ready for exercise and you’ll be less sore. TAKE IT OUTSIDE Get outdoors! Go hiking. Ride a bike. Make delicious,
healthy meals outdoors, too. Try salmon and vegetables on the grill instead of the usual burgers and hotdogs. William Smith, MS, NSCA-CSCS, MEPD works for a nationally recognized healthcare system in the New York metropolitan area providing health and wellness services. His focus is in special populations and how healthcare pro-
viders and fitness professionals can work more closely together. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Pilgrimage Experience to be Shared at Kennebunk Free Library KENNEBUNK For over 1,300 years, multitudes of European Christians made their pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James, the Apostle located in a small village in northwestern Spain. They traveled by foot, horseback or burro for many months and the various paths they traveled became known as the Way of St. James or, in Spanish, “Camino de Santiago.” Twenty years ago, few people in America had ever heard of the Camino de Santiago; today this beautiful and historic long-distance pilgrimage has entered popular culture. Last year, over 30,000 Americans joined more than 350,000 pilgrims from all over the world in walking or biking on the many historic routes all across Europe in a quest to reach Santiago de Compostela. There have been several popular movies (The Way; I’ll Push You) made about Americans on the Camino and numerous books and articles have been written about the experience. Today, pilgrims embark on their Camino for many rea-
sons, some for spiritual or religious, but most others seeking a new challenge, making new friends or after a life transition. Joan and Sam Hull, residents of Arundel, have been “perigrinos” numerous times on the Camino in Spain as well as the Via di Francesco (“Way of St. Francis”) in Italy. They have completed several long-distance walks in England, including the Cotswold Way and the South Downs Way and next year plan to walk the Pilgrims Way from London to Canterbury and after crossing the Bay of Biscay, continue in Spain on the Camino Ingles to Santiago. Joan and Sam will be in at the Kennebunk Free Library at 6 p.m. on August 13 for an hourlong presentation to people who have an interest in the Camino de Santiago. This program is free and wheelchair accessible. The Kennebunk Free Library is located at 112 Main St., Kennebunk. For details, call 207-985-2173 or email kfl@kennebunk.lib.me.us.

or more employees. Small businesses with 10 or fewer employees and seasonal employers who regularly operate less than 26 weeks in a calendar year are exempt. The bill required the Maine Department of Labor to promulgate rules to ensure the legislation can be implemented and enforced appropriately. This process will include posting of the draft rules prior to a public comment period. The Department will ensure that final rules are posted with sufficient time for employers to prepare for changes, if any are needed, in their earned leave policies. The law requires that an employee earn one hour of paid leave from a single employer for every 40 hours worked, up to 40 hours in one year of employment. This leave can be used for any purpose by the worker, however they are required to give their employer as reasonable notice as is possible. The rules written will provide guidance to employers as well as workers who benefit from the earned paid time off. The Maine Department of Labor will also provide new posters to employers outlining guidance for the rule.

Richard Webster Haggett, 90 WELLS – Richard Webster Haggett died on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, in Portsmouth, NH, following a brief illness. Dick, as he was known by many who knew him, was born in Boothbay Harbor April 13, 1929, the son of Gilbert Mather and Elizabeth Sarah Thomas Haggett, and is a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School, class of 1947. He attended Bentley College, receiving a degree in Accounting, then Suffolk University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Business. After meeting while both attending college in Boston, Dick married Jeannette Davis Haggett on September 8, 1951 at The Congregational Church of Wells. Dick and Jeannette then started their family in Massachusetts. In 1956 Dick joined Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford CT. Later he was promoted to United Technologies Turbo Power & Marine Division, where he stayed for 17 years, retiring as its comptroller. He served on the East Hartford Aircraft Federal Credit Union’s Board of Directors for many years, and eventually served as its President. Choosing to retire early rather than move away from family, Dick and Jeannette decided to return to Maine and looked to Jeannette’s hometown of Wells to make their new home. They quickly became active in town. Dick was a member of The
Congregational Church of Wells, where he served as a deacon and volunteered with Soup’s On. He was also a member of the Maine Wheels RV Club serving on the parking crew at national conventions. They travelled the US extensively camping or visiting 48 out of 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii. Dick was also active in The Trailblazers Club in Wells, and South Windsor, CT, Square Dancing Club. Dick served as an assistant Boy Scout Master for three years in South Windsor. Dick was a lifelong Boston Red Sox Fan and loved attending NASCAR races in many states for several years. For nine summers Dick enjoyed working alongside his brother Courtney at The Maine State Visitor Information Center, giving guidance and advice to travelers. Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Jeannette Davis Haggett of Wells, a son David Haggett and his wife Gwen of Oakdale, CT, two daughters Patricia Pappalardo and her husband Frank of Coventry, CT, and Nancy Kirchner and her husband Ken of South Windsor, CT, a brother Courtney Haggett of Wells, and three grandchildren, Mary Grace Miller and her husband Kevin, Emily Haggett and Anthony Pappalardo, and several nieces and nephews. There will be a time of visitation on Friday, August 9, 6-8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. A Celebration of Dick’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 10, at The Congregational Church of Wells, 1695 Post Road, Wells, with Reverend David Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Congregational Church of Wells Steeple Restoration Fund, PO Box 759, Wells, ME 04090. To share a memory or leave a

She was born in Dover, NH, on December 10, 1969 to Michael Lanouette and Lillian Burke. She was predeceased by her husband Timothy Lahue in 1992. Kelly was educated in Maine public schools and a graduate of Marshwood High School. She grew up in Maine with most of her fondest memories taking
place at the family home on Bauneg Beg Lake. She would later share this remarkable lake with her own family as it was dear to her heart. She enjoyed various crafting in her spare time. The hobbies she loved the most were hand making jewelry and crocheting. She made numerous hand crocheted blankets sewn with love for her closest relatives and friends. Kelly was a ferociously loyal and dedicated daughter, mother, sister, friend and life partner to Tom Goulet; Together they raised a beautiful family. The proudest moment and one that brought immense joy to her heart was becoming a Nana to Riley, Lucas, and Erin. Her greatest professional accomplishments were being the owner and proprietor of the Little Red School House and J & D Enterprises, both in Berwick Maine. Being a business owner of two vastly different companies took much steadfast commitment and working beyond the average 40 hour work week. An aspect of J & D Enterprises that she loved the most was plowing snow. She would share many stories of the hours spent on snow removal and just how

funny the snow business can be. The aspect that she loved most about her businesses was that they were family owned and operated. She took great pride in sharing the day to day operations with those she loved most. It made for those long hours to not seem quite as long when spent with family. She is survived by her partner of 25 years, Tom Goulet of Berwick; mother Lillian Burke of Sanford; father and step mother Michael and Susan Lanouette of North Berwick; son Dylon Lahue and daughter Jamie Lahue of Berwick; sister Meridith Marston and husband Jon of Orlando, FL.; brother-inlaw Dale Lahue and wife Robin of Dover, NH; three grandchildren, Riley, Lucas and Erin, as See LAHUE page 26...

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

WELLS Chip and Dale have been on a remarkable journey before arriving here at Safe Haven. They were born in Miami, under a house that was being renovated. The mother cat and her 3 kittens hid underground while hammers pounded and saws buzzed above their heads. Luckily, a kind person learned about their plight and brought them into her home. When it was time for neutering, momma and her

ACAR NORTH BERWICK Introducing Phoenix! This sweet girl is approximately 2.5-3 years old and was brought to us as a survivor of a house fire. Phoenix has had her wellness exam, no signs of injury or damage to her internally or externally were noticed, and she was given a clean bill of health. We decided to call her Phoenix as she “rose from the ashes” quite literally. She is a very lovable cat and likes to chat up a storm when she receives attention or treats. She needs a home with that’s quiet with a low-key lifestyle and minimal pets or none at all besides her might be best. Please come by our NEW open adoption hours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 10 at our facility, 251 Country Club Road (Route 4), Sanford or call Marilyn at 207490-2855 or Amanda at 603-2053615.

connect my main display monitor, all ICONS get scrambled. When I reconnect the main monitor, all my ICONS remain scrambled. Is there any way I can stop this? Michael Dear Michael, I can picture exactly what you are describing because the same thing happens when you change the resolution on a monitor and the desktop icons get rearranged. I am not aware of a way to stop this from happening, hopefully someone else will have an idea for us, but I can give you a few tips to help you keep the icons in place. If you kept all your desktop shortcuts on the laptop screen, they would not need to re-arrange themselves

when you are using the laptop without the second monitor. If you have too many icons for that to work, you could try organizing the icons into folders. For example, on my desktop, I have all the shortcuts that I use for web design in one folder, I have all the shortcuts for computer repair programs in another folder, and sewing shortcuts in another folder. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My computer has slowed down, home page (which has been the same for years) has been changed to some search place (iselect I think) and try as I might, I can’t get it to go back to my original settings even through Tools/Options. Edwina Dear Edwina, It sounds like you have been infected with some malware. The first thing you need to do is remove the malware. You can start by searching through your installed programs and uninstalling anything that you did not intend to install. Next, find a good anti-malware program and scan, then remove any
malware found. I like Emsisoft for this. Lastly, you will probably have to reset a lot of your browser settings. Not just the home page, but also the search engines and extensions. If this is not something you are comfortable doing, bring it into your local computer repair shop and they will be able to clean it out for you. This is something that I do for my customers all the time. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Can you recommend a good password generator? Thanks, Robert Dear Robert, LastPass has a great password generator on their website at: https://lastpass.com/generatepassword.php There, you can specify the length of the password, what kind of characters to include along with several other options. The passwords are actually generated on your computer, not on their website so they don’t have access to the password you generate. While password generators are great for creating strong, secure passwords, they are not great

for creating easy to remember passwords. If you need to keep the password in your head, try using the first letter of each word in a phrase or song, along with a few digits of a telephone number you want to memorize. That makes it easy for you to remember, but hard for others to crack. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have windows 10 and am looking for something to do a contact list that I can print labels, envelopes, phone numbers etc from. Any suggestions? Thanks, Helen Dear Helen, It sounds like you need either an office suite, or a good desktop publishing program. If you have Microsoft Office, you can create a contact list in Excel. Each column across would be a field like, LastName, FirstName, Address, City, State, ZipCode and so forth. Then, you make each row across a single person. Once you have this contact list created, you can use Word to print labels, envelopes or whatever you need by doing a Mail Merge. This is not the most simple solution, but it is the most powerful. A desktop publishing program would probably be a little easier, but the method varies from one program to the next so I couldn’t give you directions. Look for a program that makes greeting cards and has some sort of mail merge capabilities. Another possibility would be the Avery label website. They have an online program that you can use to print labels, just go to avery. com and click on “Templates”. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? York Women’s Golf League –August 5th Standings YORK The point gap has narrowed and the pressure is on! York Women’s Golf League played their second to last round on Monday evening with some exciting developments. Team 5, led by Deb Erikson, continues its hold on first place position with 866 points, but by a smaller margin as Linda
Davis’ Team 6 made its move this week with an impressive 119 point gain. Now only 10 points behind in second place, Team 6 has one more week to catch the season-long leaders. Meanwhile, plenty of great play and fun competition among the four other teams has kept everyone on their toes. Liz Nolan’s Team 2 has
moved up into fifth place position with 751 points passing Peggy Todd’s Team 1 with 729 points. Team 4, captained by Linda Jellison, with 795 points and Sandy Petrovich’s Team 3 with 766 cumulative points remain in third and fourth place. Stay tuned, York Women’s Golf League is where the action is!

Douglas H. Lansing, 63 SOUTH BERWICK – Doug Lansing, a resident of South Berwick for the last seven years, passed away at the Manchester VA Hospital - Hospice Center after a four-year battle with liver cancer. Douglas, originally born in Northampton, MA, graduated from Palmer, MA, High School and afterward, enlisted and served in Hawaii at a base as an “S4” for several years until honorably discharged. Doug had a high I.Q. and a myriad set of talents and skills and many jobs in his lifetime. His skills included: car repair, electrical wiring, plumbing, carpentry, refinishing furniture and playing the ‘mouth harp’ or
harmonica on karaoke night. He had a quick and agile mind and a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He loved the outdoors and wildlife. In the last few years, he had become a “born again Christian” and spent his days sharing his testimony of Jesus Christ with all he met, from friend to stranger and in the last year of his life he traveled across country and back twice, visiting family and sharing his love for them. Douglas passed away on January 23, 2019. His siblings will hold a Military Service for interment of his ashes Friday, August 9 at 11:50 a.m. sharp until 12:20 p.m. at the Boscawen VA Cemetery in NH; Friends and acquaintances are welcome, then gather at the Atrium Room at Alan’s Restaurant from 12:303 p.m. for a “pay as you go” lunch to share memories and socialize. For more information, contact Doug’s sister ElizabethAnnLansing@gmail.com or text/call 406-380-2458. • • • • • • • • • •
In Memory of My Mother Claire Fabiano
She Sang Like an Angel By Jim Fabiano The morning was and still is one of the most beautiful I can remember. The lake looked as though multi-colored gems on a clear sheet of glass covered it. The sun was just breaking the horizon and could be seen as sheets of light billowing through the trees that surrounded the lake where my family and I were
enjoying a week of vacation. I don’t know why I snuck out early that morning and found myself sitting against the cabin where I thought the rest of my family still slept. The sight in front of me was both awesome and terrifying. It was just too big and bright for the little boy I used to be. As the scene mesmerized me I heard the song of an angel. At first I had no idea as to where it was coming from. Destiny had me sitting below a small window where my mother was preparing breakfast for my family. The setting in front of me literally disappeared because the sound of my mother’s song was exceptionally beautiful. Her voice produced in me a serenity I will probably never experience again. It felt as though I sat and listened for what could be seconds or hours because her voice eliminated any concept of time. For all of my life I never knew who my mother was. She was beautiful with everyone loving her wherever she went. I don’t think I ever heard her yell or speak poorly about anyone. She was a light wherever she went. Yet, she was always overshadowed by the strength of my father. All she did was support all of us no matter what we did. She was the strongest of anyone I had ever met. She became sick many times throughout her life and healed herself in the knowledge she had to take care of us. She had to be well because she loved all of us more than she loved herself. I could go on forever with stories about what she was and how I failed her. It is foolish now because she now sings with angels.

Griffin Allaire Selected as Student-Athlete of the Month WELLS In June, Wells High School junior Griffin Allaire was named Student-Athlete of the Month for May of 2019. This award is in recognition of his academics and sportsmanship on the Outdoor Boy’s Track and Field Team where he placed first in the 3200 meter and 1600 meter events at the Class C State Track and Field Championship Meet held this year at Mt. Blue High School. Allaire, who will be a senior at WHS this fall, has now received the award twice. Allaire, who began running in the sixth grade, says that he tries to run five to six days a week and plans to run in the Beach to Beacon Race in Cape Elizabeth this summer. The Student-Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by Wells High School, the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency, and Moody Maxon Real Estate. Presenting Allaire with a plaque on June 12 was Wells-Ogunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole and John C. Kreie who represents Cole Harrison. Head coach of the WHS
Boys’ Outdoor Track and Field team Jason Hludik commented, “Griffin has made some significant progress over the last few years. He is easy to work with and has been very disciplined in following his training and recovery schedule. He is striving for big things!” Last fall, Bob Winn, a longtime distance running coach of Allaire’s commented, “He is going to have a lot of records before he leaves (high school). He is talented, ” said Winn. John Kreie added, “He comes from a very athletic family who all enjoy distance running so it’s certainly in his blood and he’s a super good kid!” (Photo by Reg Bennett)
