Distillery’s Make-A-Wish Fundraiser Sure to Raise Spirits

2017 Make-A-Wish® fundraising event. Madeline Senkosky speaking in center.

YORK Wiggly Bridge Distillery has announced a philanthropic partnership with Make-AWish® Maine and Crossfit Harpoon for a special fundraising event. This event, titled “Raise the Bar/Barrel and Your Spirits” is a follow-up to last year’s successful fundraising effort. Inside the 1800-era barn, whiskey barrels and grain bags, among other distillery equipment, will replace standard gym equipment for a unique and fun fitness program coached by CrossFit Harpoon. The workout is accessible to all fitness levels but attendees must be 21 and older. A specialty cocktail will also be available to support the event.

One hundred percent of the $25 entry fee goes directly to the Maine Chapter of MakeA-Wish® and proceeds from the signature specialty cocktail will raise additional funds for the Make-A-Wish® Maine. The idea to create a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish® developed organically out of a friendship between Amanda Woods, who manages marketing for Wiggly Bridge Distillery (and also happens to be the daughterin-law of Wiggly Bridge Founder and Distiller, David Woods and wife of Wiggly Bridge Distiller, Dave Wood Jr.) and York Hospital Pediatrician, Dr. Kyla Scarponi, who joined the Board of Make-A-Wish® Maine in 2017.

“We wanted create a fun, local event to raise awareness and funds for Make-A-Wish® Maine. What could be more fun than working out with whiskey barrels and supporting a good cause — not to mention the delicious cocktails” says Woods. Adds Dr. Scarponi, “As a Make-A-Wish® Maine Board Member, one of my goals is to raise funds to make it possible to increase the number of wishes given to Maine children that suffer from life threatening illnesses. Studies have shown that children have a higher chance of recovery when they receive a wish, so these kinds of fundraising efforts are so vital.” See SPIRITS page 7...

Flanders Recipient of Red Sox Scholarship at Fenway Park

SOUTH BERWICK Michaela Flanders of South Berwick was recognized as a recipient of the Maine Red Sox Service Scholarship during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park before the Red Sox-Minnesota Twins game this past Sunday. The program awarded students from public high schools across Maine with $1,000 scholarships towards their college education based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility, and demonstrated community service. The scholarship recipients were congratulated on the field at Fenway Park by Red Sox President & CEO Sam Kennedy and other program officials. The service scholarship program was introduced in 2010

by then-New Hampshire Governor John Lynch, and Red Sox Principal Owner John W. Henry. Today the New England Red Sox Service Scholarships Program has grown to include 170 high schools throughout New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Large Lizard Found in Backyard SOUTH BERWICK On Thursday, August 1, Marjorie Brown met an unexpected visitor in her backyard – a three-foot long Savannah Monitor lizard. Though a common sight in Africa, these lizards are definitely not native to Maine but are readily available in the pet trade. In fact, they are the most common monitor lizards encountered by animal rescue agencies. Although Ms. Brown wasn’t in any immediate danger from the animal, she dialed 911 for immediate help in dealing with the situation. Upon arrival, South Berwick officers Hartley and Burbank found the uninvited guest lounging on a pile of mint leaves basking in the warmth of the sun and was apprehend without much of a struggle. The lizard was taken to the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk for evaluation and then

after drawing a crowd of onlookers recently. Lifeguards and York police managed to keep the seal safe until the response team arrived. The young harbor seal was rescued by a team from Marine Mammals of Maine, a Bath nonprofit organization that rescues marine mammals and sea turtles. The rescue team collected and transported the weanling seal to their center, where it will receive treatment. It was the organization’s 234th response this year. Lynda Doughty, executive director of Marine Mammals of Maine, said the 3-to-4month-old seal appears to be on the mend. “He’s still not feeling well due to some respiratory in-

fections, but we’re hoping medication, nutrition and time will help,” the staff said on its Facebook page. The organization is caring for two other seals and has room for one more. The center can perform triage and provide shortterm care for other ailing seals. Marine Mammals of Maine is the only organization federally authorized to rescue marine mammals and turtles. Doughty said if all goes well, the seal will be released in two or three months.

Each of the KRC restaurants are participating in the “Feed Kids program, designed to raise funds on behalf of Full Plates Full Potential, with $1.00 donations for every designated menu item sold. KRC is the only business in the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport area participating in Full Plates Full Potential and began participation on June 21. To kick-off the program, an inaugural donation for the entire month of June was made to Full Plates Full Potential for a

total of $1,000. “The Full Plates Full Potential Feed Kids program and our participating merchants have the potential to change child hunger as we know it in the state of Maine, said John Woods, co-founder of Full Plates Full Potential. John has spent the last decade advocating for anti-hunger initiatives. “Maine is an outlier in New England, and one of the few states in the nation where hunger is growing, not shrinking. By allowing partners like the Kennebunkport Resort Collection the chance to directly help local schools, it will open the doors for so many children and families to access nutritious meals. Founded in June of 2014, Full Plates Full Potential

The Quebe Sisters to Perform at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre ARUNDEL When the Quebe Sisters from Texas take a stage, and the triple-threat fiddle champions start playing and singing in multi-part close harmony, audiences are blown away. It’s partly because the trio’s vocal and instrumental performances are authentic, all-Americana, and respectful of the artists who inspired them the most. Not surprisingly, the Quebe Sisters earn standing ovations at just about every show.and it’s been that way since 2000, when they started fiddling together as pre-teens. Growing up in Burleson, a southern suburb of Fort Worth, Hulda, Sophia and Grace were ages 7, 10 and 12 in 1998 when they attended their first local fiddle competition in nearby Denton, and decided fiddling

was what they wanted to do. The girls earned solo and group accolades early on, winning state and national championships in their respective age groups in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. Along with headlining their own shows to ever-growing audiences, they’ve shared stages with American music legends like Willie Nelson, George Strait, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Ray Price, Connie Smith, Marty Stuart, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, Riders in the Sky and many others. Come see the Quebe Sisters perform at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre, 53 Old Post Rd in Arundel on August 16 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $35 each. For more information, visit www. quebesisters.com

Charlie Chaplin Short Comedies with Live Music at Leavitt Theatre OGUNQUIT More than a century after he first stepped in front of a movie camera, Charlie Chaplin remains one of the world’s most recognizable cinematic icons. But what made him famous in the first place? See for yourself when a selection of Chaplin’s best short comedies are screened on Wednesday, August 15 at 7 p.m. at the Leavitt Fine Arts Theatre, 259 Main St. Route 1, Ogunquit. Admission is $10 per person, general seating with the program accompanied by live music performed by New Hampshire composer Jeff Rapsis. The program of Chaplin’s short comedy films is the latest in this season’s silent film series at the Leavitt.. The series aims to show the best silent films in the manner that caused people to first fall in love with the movies—on the big screen, in a theater, with live music, and with an audience. “These are the films that people think of when they think of Chaplin and slapstick comedy, and they’re still as laugh-out-loud funny today as they were when first released so long ago,” said Jeff Rapsis, who will provide live music for the screenings. The films show Chaplin

creating comedy in settings that vary widely. In ‘Behind the Screen,’ Chaplin plays a stagehand at a dysfunctional movie studio; ‘The Rink’ gives Chaplin a chance to display his talent on roller skates; ‘Easy Street’ finds Charlie taking a job as a policeman in the roughest part of town. In ‘The Cure,’ Chaplin wreaks havoc at a pretentious health spa. For more information, visit www.leavittheatre.com.

CAPE NEDDICK To honor Ogunquit’s longstanding history as an artists’ colony and showcase the local artists in the community today, Clay Hill Farm – together with Talespinstudios in Ogunquit, launched the #VerandART Project this past spring. Every 6-8 weeks a local artist is featured at Clay Hill Farm and their collection hung in the Veranda Room for the public to view and enjoy. Artist Harold Barnard grew up in Downeast Maine and draws inspiration for his work from his deep Maine roots. With a passion for nature, Barnard’s experience with hunting and fishing in Maine’s woods and waters fostered a deep connection and respect for the inner beauty of his surroundings. “Whether ice fishing at 20 below, dragging streamers across Grand Lake or thrashing through heavy woods to • Craft Beer

Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries. While visiting historic monuments and museums, American tourists were exposed to Europe’s high culture. They also had the opportunity to socialize with Europeans of similar social standing and other Americans abroad, to develop friendships, and occasionally to meet a future spouse. Travelers brought back souvenirs of their trip-decorations for the home, fashionable clothing for their wardrobes, and other mementos of the beauty and splendor they had seen. The exhibition in historic Emerson-Wilcox House features many of these objects, including copies of Old Master paintings, contemporary gouaches and watercolors, large-format photographs, jewelry, and decorative arts. These items are shown along with journals and scrapbooks compiled by several New Englander residents, including several with connections to York. Curated by Old York’s executive director and chief curator, Joel Lefever, the exhibition is on view through October 8. Open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entrance is included in museum admission, and is free to members.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Director adds Cinematic Touch to Latest Hackmatack Production BERWICK Director Gary Locke of Merrimack, NH, has long wanted to stage a play in black and white. So when the folks at Hackmatack Playhouse asked him to direct “Dial M for Murder,” he saw this as his opportunity. Fortunately, the folks at Hackmatack like the idea of taking this stage remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film and giving it a cinematic touch when it opens on the Berwick stage Wednesday, August 15. “The people at Hackmatack absolutely embraced the idea of trying to capture that 1940s film noir feel,” said Locke. “They were gung ho, which delighted me to no end.” As a result, “Dial M for Murder” will open with costumes, makeup, props, and scenery largely in black and white. “It will have that film noir lighting, that staid lighting with light that accentuates all the shadows,” said Locke, who was, unsurprisingly, a film major in college. This low-key murder mystery tells the story of Tony Wendice, who married an upscale woman named Margot for her money and now plans to murder her for money. He blackmails someone he knows into carrying out the murder, but things do not go as planned. Both the film and stage play were written by English playwright Frederick Knott. The

play premiered in 1952 on BBC Television, before it opened later that year in London’s West End and then on Broadway. Two years later, the film directed by Hitchcock was released, starring Grace Kelly as Margot. In the Hackmatack version, Margot will be played by Hackmatack’s artistic director, Crystal Lisbon, who at the last minute decided to audition for the part. “I was thrilled,” said Locke. “I like Crystal as an actress and I kept leaving clues that it would be great if she auditioned.” Lisbon, a resident of Dover, will appear opposite Bretton Reis, who plays her husband Tony. “This is the third play Bretton and I have done together, but the first time we’ve ever acted together,” said Lisbon, who is in her fourth year as Hackmatack’s artistic director. “We never had

11th Annual Blueberry Festival KENNEBUNK Holy Cross Lutheran Church will host its 11th Blueberry Festival, Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church on the corner of Lord and Storer Streets in Kennebunk. The church will also offer homemade doughnuts, blueberry pies, cookies and other treats for sale. Blueberry shortcake topped with fresh whipped cream, the festival’s

scenes together in the two previous plays, so it’s been fun this time around.” As Reis, Lisbon and four other cast members rehearse for the show, they have a special still life visitor along with them, noted Locke, who appeared in the cast of “The Fantasticks” last year. “For decades Hackmatack has had a life-size cutout of Alfred Hitchcock in the prop room,” he said. “Now we’ve taken him at and put him in rehearsal barn with us.” Dial M For Murder opens Wednesday, August 15 and runs through September 1 with shows at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Thursdays August 16, 23 and 30. Health & Fitness Lifestyle Choices That Can Decrease Cancer Risk style choices that may help people reduce their cancer risk. Avoid tobacco. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that cigarette smoking kills almost half a million people in America alone each year. Nearly 10 percent of those deaths occur due to exposure to secondhand smoke. Lung cancer is not the only type of cancer that smoking has been linked to, as the Mayo Clinic notes smoking also has been connected to cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, pancreas, bladder, cervix, and kidney. By avoiding or quitting tobacco, men and women can reduce their own cancer risk and reduce the likelihood that their nonsmoking loved ones will develop cancer related to secondhand smoke. Eat right. The WHO notes that many countries have implemented programs encouraging the consumption of five or more portions of fruits and vegetables per day. Those programs are a result of studies showing the potential relationship between a healthy diet and a reduced risk of cancer. For example, the National Cancer Institute says studies conducted on animals have shown that antioxidants, which can be found in various fruits and vegetables, can prevent the type of cell damage associated with

The United Nations estimates that the world is home to 7.6 billion people. None of those people, regardless of their ethnicity, race or gender, are immune to cancer. According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the second-leading cause of death across the globe. Responsible for nearly nine million deaths in 2015, cancer is a formidable foe but one that can be defeated. For example, the SEER Cancer Statistics Review released in spring of 2018 indicated that cancer death rates among women decreased by 1.4 percent between 2006 and 2015. Even more encouraging is the decline in breast cancer death rates, which the American Cancer Society says decreased by 39 percent between 1989 and 2015. Various factors have contributed to the decline in cancer death rates. While advancements in treatment protocols and education programs that have emphasized the importance of cancer screenings have had profound impacts, individuals avoiding unhealthy lifestyle choices also has made a difference in reversing cancer death rates. Research into cancer prevention is ongoing, but the following are some healthy life-

the development of cancer. Protect skin from the sun. In 2018, the American Cancer Society notes that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the United States each year than all other cancers combined. While overexposure to the sun is not the only way a person can develop skin cancer, protecting skin from the sun is a great way for people to significantly reduce their risk for the disease. The Mayo Clinic recommends people avoid the sun between 10

a.m. and 4 p.m, when the sun’s rays are strongest. People also should apply and reapply generous amounts of sunscreen when spending time outdoors. Speak with a physician about immunizations. The Mayo Clinic notes that protecting oneself against certain viral infections also may help men and women reduce their cancer risk. For example, hepatitis B has been linked to liver cancer. Certain people, including those who are sexually active but not

Health & Fitness Tips to Improve Memory Forgetfulness can affect anyone. For example, few, if any, adults can say they have not experienced moments when they could not find their keys. And once the keys are found, people move on without giving much thought to why they did not immediately remember where they left their keys. Isolated incidents where people cannot recall where they placed their car keys or other minor bouts with forgetfulness do not occur by accident. In fact, the Harvard Medical School notes that they are likely byproducts of agerelated changes in thinking skills. When people reach their 50s, chemical and structural changes in the brain may begin to occur, and these changes can affect a person’s ability to process memories. Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older. Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, notes that human beings are better at recognition than recall. That means people are more likely to remember something they read, such as a note or a list, than something they’re simply told. Recognize the value of repetition. The Harvard Medical School notes that people might be more inclined to remember what they hear if they repeat it out loud. Names and addresses might be more easily remembered after they’re re-

peated out loud because repetition increases the likelihood that the brain will record the information and be capable of retrieving it later. When studying for exams, many students repeat important points to themselves time and again, and that same approach can be applied by adults who are trying to improve their memories. Eat a healthy diet. A study published in 2015 in the journal Neurology found that people who eat healthy diets with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish and little alcohol and red meat may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and thinking skills. Authored by Andrew Smyth of McMaster University in Ontario and the National University of Ireland in Galway, the study following more than 27,000 people in 40 countries for an average of roughly five years. All participants were 55 and older and had diabetes or a history of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease. Those who ate the healthiest diets were 24 percent less likely to experience cognitive decline than people with the least healthy diets. Break things down. Break-

The number of people who smoke is on the decline, as a 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the percentage of ing things down into small chunks also can help improve memory. If tasked with remembering something extensive, such as a speech, focus on a single sentence at a time, only moving on to the next sentence when you’re confident you have successfully committed the preceding sentence to memory. Periodic memory lapses are often nothing to worry about. But men and women concerned about maintaining their memories can employ various strategies to do just that. adults in the United States who smoke cigarettes declined from roughly 21 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. That decline has no doubt helped reduce overall cancer death rates, though the figures regarding smoking-related deaths are still staggering. According to the CDC, smoking accounts for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The 2018 report from the CDC indicates that men (17.5 percent) are more likely than women (13.5 percent) to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the report notes a correlation between education and the likelihood of smoking cigarettes. While smoking was lowest among people who had graduate degrees, with only five out of every 100 such adults being smokers, smoking rates were highest (40.6 percent) among adults with graduate education degree certificates, or

GEDs. While people who had no high school diploma were less likely to smoke cigarettes than GED recipients, the CDC report found that smoking rates declined the more education people received. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by thirdparty sources.

~ Ask The Computer Lady & News ~

Dear Computer Lady, Every time I turn on my computer Google loads up. When I change to another web site Google loads again. How do I get rid of Google, it slows things down. Many thanks for answering my questions in the past. John Dear John, What you are describing is not normal behavior for a web browser, so we will have to do a little investigating to figure out what is triggering the behavior. My first question would be what web browser are you using? It could be Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Whatever the browser, you will need to go into the settings and look at the add-ons, plugins or extensions that are installed. Remove any that look like they might be causing the problem. If that doesn’t help, use your security software to run a full malware scan. It is possible you have some advertising software installed. If that doesn’t solve the problem, you will probably need to bring it into your local computer repair shop to have them troubleshoot

and fix the problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am a yahoo mail user and now am asked to agree to their Oath TOS, which seem to allow them to look at everything on my e-mail, gather billing and payment information, track where I go and what I look at whether or not I am “on Yahoo and pass along my information to their “trusted affiliates. Is there a free provider that does not make their user agree to such all invasive terms? If I don’t agree to the new terms, do you know if I can continue to use e-mail under existing I believe they call it legacy terms? Thanks, Diane Dear Diane, I don’t believe there is a free email provider that does not use the contents of your email messages to provide advertising that you might be interested in. If they did not have a way to earn an income with advertising, there would be no point in providing the free email accounts to the public. Everyone has to make a living somehow. I also am pretty sure that your legacy TOS

with yahoo includes the same invasive terms, but it really doesn’t matter because the company has made it clear that if you do not accept the new TOS, then you will need to find another email company. The only way you are going to keep your email private is to purchase a domain and purchase email hosting to go along with it. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have Window 10, that I keep updated regularly. I have Avast AV. This latest win 10 update will not ‘take’ because “some apps need to be uninstalled’, and shows Avira AV. I can find absolutely no trace of it in my files, or in add/remove. I have no knowledge of ever installing it, either. Had AVG prior to Avast. What to do? Enjoy your newsletters. You are the best, Rae Dear Rae, I have seen this issue a couple of times recently, and been able to fix it. What you need to do is find any folders on your computer that have the word “Avira in the name and either rename or delete them. You might find the folder or folders in your program files, but I have also found them in random places like a backup from an older computer. The easiest way to find them folder or folders is

to go the Windows Explorer, click on “This PCâ€? in the left column, then in the search box type, Avira and let Windows search for the files and folders. It will probably take a while, but so far I have been able to fix this error message by searching for and removing old Avira folders. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’m using Microsoft Excel 2010. I have two questions. 1) Can Excel take a segment of time (1:35-2:00) and convert it into minutes (25)? 2) Can Excel total a column of minutes and convert that into hours and minutes? I have learned how to add numbers in Excel and that Ăs about it. Please explain how to do these if they are possible. Thanks, Colleen Dear Colleen, Yes, Excel can do both of these tasks (Microsoft Excel is really a very powerful program). For your first question, you would need a column with a start time, then a column with an end time. To figure out the amount of time between the two, you would create a formula subtracting the end time from the start time. When you type the time in the start and end columns, you would type the time (8:15 for example) then a space

Mainers Being Targeted by Tech Support Con Artists WASHINGTON, DC The Senate Aging Committee’s Fraud Hotline has recently received several reports from Maine residents who have lost money as the result of computer and tech support scams.

and either the letter a for AM or the letter p for pm. When you get to the column that would calculate the amount of time, you would create a formula something like this: =E5-D5 This formula would take the time in cell E5 (your end time) and subtract it from the time in D5 (your start time). Your second question is just as easy. All you have to do is let Excel know that you are entering units of time, and add them just like normal. Excel will automatically combine minutes into hours and minutes. Lets say you want to enter 25 minutes for your first amount of time, you would use the following format: 0:25 that stands for zero hours and 25 minutes. Enter all your times using that format. For the total, just use the same formula as you would use for adding numbers and Excel will automatically give you the number of hours and minutes. If there are more than 24 hours in your total, you will have to change the format of the cell to [h]:mm. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? It often begins with victims receiving a prompt from scammers claiming to be “tech support representatives and telling the victims that there is something wrong with their computer. FEMA Repairs Top Quick Tips for Getting Your One Million Dollars Home Ready for Sale STATEWIDE The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated more than $1 million in federal assistance to the state of Maine to help cover costs of the Oct. 29-Nov. 1, 2017, severe storm and flooding that impacted 13 of the 16 counties in “The Pine Tree State.” In early January 2018, President Donald Trump approved Maine Governor Paul LePage’s request for federal assistance, issuing a major disaster declaration. Since then, FEMA has been working with state and local officials providing federal dollars under its Public Assistance (PA) program to eligible public entities in Cumberland, Franklin, Hancock, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Sagadahoc, Somerset, Waldo and York counties. FEMA’s PA program can fund the repair, restoration, reconstruction or replacement

of a public facility or infrastructure damaged or destroyed by a disaster. FEMA’s Individual and Households Assistance (IA) program helps individuals and families who have sustained losses due to a disaster. Based on preliminary damage assessments for this disaster, Maine did not seek a federal IA declaration. The federal money for this disaster assists in the support of first responders who worked hard to ensure Mainers’ safety, and helps reimburse entities for their costs when clearing downed trees, removing debris from roadways, and making repairs to damaged infrastructure such as roads, bridges, utilities, buildings, schools, recreational areas, and certain private nonprofits that provide community services. Although FEMA’s grants go to entities such as local governments and nonprofits, the PA program is intended to benefit everyone in affected Maine communities.

$20K Grant Offered Through Leaders & Luminaries Awards STATEWIDE Camden National Bank announced that they will award a total of $20,000 to four Maine-based nonprofits through their 2018 Leaders & Luminaries Awards. The program recognizes the importance and impact of nonprofit board members who dedicate themselves to making their nonprofit organizations stronger through strategic leadership. Since 2011, Camden National Bank has now awarded $107,000 to Maine nonprofits on behalf of 31 outstanding board leaders. “The Leaders & Luminaries Awards are a unique way we express our gratitude for the impact of the nonprofit sector on economic and community development here in Maine,” said Greg Dufour, President & CEO of Camden National Bank. “Volunteerism and charitable giving are incredibly important at Camden National Bank, and Leaders & Luminaries provides an opportunity for our local board leaders to be celebrated, commended and rewarded for their incredible work.” Camden National Bank

is seeking nominations for 501(c) (3) nonprofit board leaders who demonstrate passion, innovation and resourcefulness in their board governance to create organizational growth, a successful transition or financial stability. All nominations are due August 24. An independent selection committee, including the Executive Director of Maine Association of Nonprofits, two executives of Camden National Bank, and two other Maine leaders who are active in Maine’s nonprofit community, will review all nominations. The four winners and their organizations will be recognized at the Maine Association of Nonprof-

Résumé Writing Rules to Follow When professionals are ready to take a new step in their careers, it’s wise to revisit their old résumés and see what can be done to update them for the current day and age. This is especially true for people who may have been out of the job-seeking arena for some time. Writing a résumé can be complicated. The rules for finding a new job are continually evolving, and résumés remain a big component of that process. The following are some current résumé trends that will help professionals stand out from the masses. Consider design Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being its’ Executive Leadership Forum on October 31. overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention. Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty. Keep juicy details up top Format the résumé so the most pertinent information is

within the top one-third of the document. Beef up a summary statement and use it in lieu of an objective. Make sure that summary includes keywords that promote your skills and experience to potentially lure the recruiter into reading more. Tweak job titles Mimic phrasing from the job listing to beat the bots and get résumés flagged for review. Slightly change job position titles so they mirror the wording used. For example, if a recruiter is looking for a “financial account manager,” and you have the experience, list your title as something like “Senior manager of new financial accounts.” Who you know Landing a new job is often See RESUME page 25...

Smokey B’s earns Best-Loved Title from MONEY Magazine OGUNQUIT MONEY magazine partnered with Yelp to find the bestloved barbecue restaurants in every state and published the results in July. All the businesses on the list are in the “BBQ” category on Yelp, and “Best” is measured using an algorithm that looks at the number of reviews and star rating for a business. The winner in Maine was Smokey B’s Gin Mill in Ogunquit at 422 Main Street! The owners, Kristin and

Josh Brown, run the restaurant along with their teenage children Chance and Jada Brown. Open now for only their second season, they were surprised and grateful to be recognized for this honor and by this publication. For them, BBQ has always been a passion, and the restaurant, a dream. Visitors enjoy the small, comfortable, and welcoming space and all of the delicious offerings that are smoked on site, made with savory homemade rubs and served with their own BBQ sauces.

Rococo Ice Cream Announces 5th Annual Employee Flavor Contest KENNEBUNKPORT Every year, the creative scoopers at Rococo Ice Cream in Kennebunkport and Ogunquit, come together in teams to participate in a competition to create the most unique (and mouthwatering) flavor. “Creativity is one of the central principles here at Rococo, as we aim to expand the boundaries of traditional ice cream and introduce customers to new flavor profiles,” says owner Lauren Guptill. “I’m always so proud of the flavors our staff create.” Each team, comprised of 3-4 scoopers, is randomly assigned a mystery ingredient. This year’s mystery ingredients include jasmine, lemongrass, Maine coast seaweed, Ube, corn, and Za’taar spice. “The addition of the mystery ingredient adds an extra layer of intrigue to this year’s competition… I am particularly excited to announce our partnership with Coastal Encounters from Moody, Wells, and Maine Coast Sea Vegetables to provide us with fresh Maine seaweed. This close-to-home flavor may be the most challenging

flavor I’ve ever assigned during the annual competition!” Guptill said, “Plus, have you ever heard of a seaweed ice cream? Maine has a booming aquaculture industry, so we are excited to see what kind of ice cream we can design that showcases such a unique flavor sourced from our backyard.” In order to create a flavor with any mystery ingredient that may come their way, veteran scoopers began thinking about different flavor ideas and gathering ideas from patrons early on in the season. A member of the winning team last year, Cathy Caron, was ecstatic to have won the competition in her second year of participation. Customers can participate in the flavor contest by visiting the Kennebunkport, Ogunquit and Wells Test Kitchen locations and casting their vote in store and online starting on Friday, August 10, until the flavors sell out. The case-takeover will feature six unique flavors inspired by various international flavor profiles. All of the scoopers’ flavors will be available in the case at the same time.

Jeanne Hulit to Take Reins of Maine Community Bancorp YORK COUNTY With the announcement that it’s hiring a single President and CEO, the board of directors of the mutual holding company, Maine Community Bancorp, advances its goal of strengthening the alliance of its two independent holdings, Biddeford Savings and Mechanics Savings Bank. By hiring Jeanne Hulit as its president and CEO, the board is underscoring Maine Community Bancorp’s commitment to community banking, local economies, small business, and customer service. Hulit brings nearly two decades of banking experience as well as experience leading a Maine-based manufacturer and several years in public service at the state and federal level. “Jeanne Hulit’s decades of experience in banking alone would make her an excellent candidate to lead this organization,” said Jon S. Oxman, Chairman of the Maine Community Bancorp board of directors. “But what really makes her stand out is her leadership skill. In banking, in public service, in community service—her knowledge,

skill, and leadership, often in the face of great change, make her the perfect person to strengthen this alliance of community banks. Jeanne has the expertise to assess situations, make sound decisions, and execute with successful results.” Hulit comes to Maine Community Bancorp from serving as President of Village Candle in Wells, where she helped expand the company’s international market and improved cost effectiveness by taking advantage of the proximity of the Port of Portland and resident shipping company, Eimskip. Prior to that, over the course of her nearly 20 years in banking in Maine, Hulit has served as President of Community Banking for Northeast Bank, Senior Vice President for commercial lending at Citizens Bank, and Vice President of Key Bank. In 2013, after having served as both the New England Regional Administrator of the Small Business Administration

(SBA), and Associate Administrator for the SBA’s Office of Capital Access, Hulit then joined the cabinet of President Barack Obama as acting Administrator of the Small Business Administration. Earlier public service included her appointment as Deputy Director of the International Division at the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. Biddeford Savings Bank CEO Charles Petersen and Mechanic Savings Bank CEO Rick Vail, both of whom helped guide their respective banks through the visionary creation of Maine Community Bancorp, will retire in October soon after Hulit assumes the position of President and CEO. “The wisdom and expertise that Charles and Rick have brought to bear in the creation of Maine Community Bancorp, as well as in maintaining the independent identities of the two banks is truly admirable,” added Hulit. “They’ve laid a solid foundation upon which we can all continue to build.” Chartered in 1867, Biddeford Savings Bank has offices is Biddeford, Waterboro, Scarborough, and Kennebunk. Its long-standing tradition of giving back to the community has supported myriad local enterprises including the Scarborough Land Trust, the Annual Feast of Generations, Adopt-A-Family, the Community Bicycle Center, Music on Main Street, and Concerts in the Park.

Sen. Collins Welcomes Taylor to DC Smart Meter System to Improve CMP Storm Response

WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced that Madeline Taylor, a Wells native, has been awarded a summer internship in her Washington, D.C., office. Madeline is the daughter of Michael and Debra Taylor of Wells. “Madeline is a terrific student and a hard worker, and I was delighted to welcome her to my Washington, D.C.,

office,” said Senator Collins. “It is always a pleasure to give students an opportunity to become actively involved in the legislative process and to serve the citizens of Maine.” Madeline is a rising senior at Colby College, where she is majoring in government and psychology. Upon graduation, Madeline plans to work in public policy.

AUGUSTA Central Maine Power (CMP) has completed several steps to enhance the performance of its smart meter system during and after major storms. “Our smart meter system has been serving CMP and its customers well for the past several years. It helps our company to operate more efficiently and cut greenhouse gas emissions, while giving our customers tools to better manage their energy use,” said Doug Herling, president and CEO of CMP. “At the height of the October wind and rain storm, the smart meter system gave us excellent data on the scope of damage, and as repairs progressed, it allowed us to confirm restoration more efficiently.” Herling noted that during a post-storm review, CMP identified several opportunities to make the smart meter system more resilient in outage situations. The Company advised the Maine Public Utilities Commission and the Maine Legislature’s Joint Committee on Energy,

Utilities, and Technology of its plans earlier this year. Among the measures that have been completed: Key AMI network communication devices are now wired for back-up generators. CMP has increased the number of mobile generators available for use during extended outage situations. CMP has enhanced its ability to perform minor repairs to smart meter equipment during a storm. Feasibility study of an alternate communications solution for use during extended telecommunications outages is complete. In addition to the above measures, CMP will launch a pilot program using solar generation and extended battery backup as an alternative to traditional back-up generators by the end of 2018. Combined with other planned enhancements to the system, CMP expects these measures to markedly improve smart meter network visibility during a

major storm or outage event. “Our commitment to innovation and a smarter grid does not end when we launch a new system,” said Herling. “Technology is constantly changing, and we will always seek ways to make good technology work even better for us and our customers.” ...CON from page 18 ufacturers will not call and ask for access to your computer, nor will they ask for account passwords. If you are concerned or confused about an issue with your computer, reach out to a local business, someone you trust, or contact the computer manufacturer directly. Be extremely wary of providing personal information, especially credit or debit card information, to anyone who has contacted you who you do not know.” Anyone who receives a suspicious call or is contacted by someone they do not know online can call the Senate Aging Committee’s toll-free Fraud Hotline at 1-855-303-9470.

Harry J. Turner, 69 NORTH BERWICK – Harry J. Turner of North Berwick, died August 5, 2018, at Hyder Hospice House after a 16month battle with cancer. He was born September 13, 1948 in Methuen, MA, the son of John H. and Jane (Gebala) Turner. Harry grew up in Portsmouth. He was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Class of 1966 and a graduate of Bryant and Stratton College in Boston. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, completing the apprentice program and retiring after 30 years in 2007. Harry cherished time with his family. His son and two grandsons were his pride and joy. The “happy place for Harry and his wife Barbara were the beaches from York Harbor to Kennebunkport. He loved their walks during the nice weather. He was a member of the South Berwick Senior Center where his Thursday afternoons were spent playing Whist. He also belonged to Seacoast Fitness in Wells, and the early morning group always looked forward to Harry joining the “Gymchicks. He and Barbara enjoyed live theater in Boston and Ogunquit. Avid fans, Harry and his son always talked Boston sports together. Harry is survived by his wife of 48 years Barbara (Bloom) Turner and their son Ryan J. Turner; his daughter-in-law Rachel and grandsons Mason

J. and Justin J. Turner. He is also survived by siblings Henry Turner and Christine Chance, special in-laws Dr. John and Jody Bloom and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Harry was predeceased by his parents and siblings Jerry Turner, Patty Caron, Kathy LaCroix and Mary Turner. “Prince Harry will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was one of “the good guys with a strong will, a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor. He valued his friends and enjoyed sharing stories about “The Glory Days. His wife Barbara thanks all the family and friends who visited him at Hyder Hopsice House and the staff, nurses and volunteers in the gardens who cared for Harry with such compassion. We all wish that he rests in peace after his long journey. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery in Dover, NH, will be private. A Celebration of his Life will be held at South Berwick Senior Center, 71 Norton Street in South Berwick on Saturday, August 18 from noon to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Hyder Hospice House, 285 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820. The Central Question is Always Winter or Summer

By Jim Fabiano As I was mowing my lawn for what seemed to be the millionth time this summer my neighbor wandered over from his task of allowing weeds to take over his lawn to ask me if I was sick of summer yet? OK, I answered, but I reminded him of a time in mid-February as we were attempting to liberate our families from the snows and cold of winter, when he asked me if I was sick of winter yet? Because I am old as dirt my mind started to question which season was easier to survive? Being the teacher I’ve always been I started to compare the two seasons. First of all summer produces an incredible amount of heat. Winter, on the other hand produces an incredible amount of cold. As a science person I clearly understand that cold does not exist. Cold is simply the absence of heat. As to what is easier to survive is an interesting question. The heat of summer can be defeated if you have air conditioning in your home. The cold of winter can be subdued

New Maine National Guard Facility

by one’s heating system. Both are expensive. Air conditioning explodes one’s electric bill while heating either defeats one’s budget or breaks one’s back if they are apt to heat their house with wood. This question seems like a draw. In New England if you ignore these problems you will probably die. Then there is the question of how much work is involved in surviving the different seasons. The hardest part of summer is mowing one’s lawn. All of our lawns are filled with weeds. To understand this concept remembers that all a blade of grass is defined, as is a weed. It doesn’t produce any fruit or anything that can be used at a future date. If one has a garden or flowers this problem is exponentially increased because of the necessity to water every day and remove any weed that has a tendency to take over the garden. Remember, these same weeds encompass the majority of our lawns. Winter, on the other hand, produces a different type of problem. After every storm

AUGUSTA Gov. Paul R. LePage along with representatives from Maine’s congressional delegation and community members recently attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly opened Camp Chamberlain in Augusta. “I am proud that Maine can provide our National Guard with a facility worthy of their dedication to serving our country,” said LePage.

The joint forces headquarters is home to approximately 190 full-time soldiers and airmen from the Maine Air and Army National Guard. This number increases to over 220 service members during a drill weekend. The 100,000 square foot, $34 million facility took approximately 2.5 years to complete and sits on approximately 43 acres of land. The facility provides

ample office, classroom and collaboration space for the full time and traditional National Guard service members. The facility is state of the art, featuring an auditorium, multipurpose classroom space, operations center, multiple conference rooms, kitchen and dining area, maintenance bay, gym, showers, locker room, and will proudly display our historical artifacts throughout the building.

that is sure to happen, one has to clear out one’s driveway in order to escape one’s home and one also had to clear out the entrance to your home and clear a pathway so the oil or gas companies can deliver fuel. This is not only back breaking work but it also freezes most of the skin on your body to the point one no longer wants to feel one’s body because after it thaws out the pain of one thousands needles are sure to follow. Both seasons do not only produce what is considered work. In the summer one has the responsibility to have at least a couple of dozen bar-b-q’s on a deck. It is imperative to have this get-togethers with one’s

family and friends in order to be invited to their parties. I am convinced I no longer grow any hair on my hands and arms because they have been destroyed by past battles with my grills. The winter season is filled with various indoor parties that start with the absurdity of Halloween through the mainly forgotten New Year’s Eve celebrations. Christmas is thrown in a week before the start of the New Year producing bills that will have to paid for through most of the New Year. Summer traffic is difficult. In New England and especially in Maine one has a specific way to drive. Most of us don’t drive fast and we basically drive as

if there was no one else on the road. Summer changes this because we are infiltrated with drivers that follow a whole different set of rules. Everyone seems to have to get to some place fast and since they are always cutting us off or basically ignoring that we even exist. I guess they seem important. I never want to be that important. Winter traffic has less traffic but it has something summer will never see. Winter roads filled with giant plow trucks that literally can’t see us. It is best to simply pull over into the breakdown lane than attempt to keep up with the plows or ever See QUESTION page 34...

WEST KENNEBUNK Don’t miss the 90th Annual Antique Show and Sale this weekend at the Middle School of the Kennebunks, 60 Thompson Road, West Kennebunk on Saturday, August 11 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, August 12 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. There will be dozens of booths selling everything from vintage linens to priceless antiques, to jewelry and vintage collectibles, and everything in between. There will also be an AWS booth with plenty of great finds. Meet Irene: “You know that saying, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise? Well, Irene has taken it to heart – She likes to spend time throughout the day napping and LOVES to wake up with the sun for her breakfast. And thanks to her friends at AWS, including her foster mom, she’s considered healthy* and probably considers herself wealthy because of the love and safety (though she’d love more) she receives. So if you’re an early riser who has lots of love to give, please consider adopting her. She’s in foster care right now so you’ll have to call AWS to set up an appointment to meet her. She’s a soft, sweet gal who wants nothing more than a happy retirement home. *She does have feline diabetes, but thanks to the good care at AWS, she is currently “in remission and doesn’t require insulin shots. That’s not to say that might change in the future, but for now, her condition is

managed with a strict diet of quality food. The AWS vets will tell you more about it when you come to meet her. Irene is a DDAF Senior: Through generous funding from the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF) to support senior cats, we are able to offer Irene’s adopters up to $100 in post-adoption support for qualified nonroutine veterinary care, such as dental care, surgery, diagnostics, and certain prescription medications. More information is available at the adoption center.

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Meet Morris & Pudge Morris is a delightful young fellow who licks your leg in anticipation of being fed, winds around your feet for attention, and begs you to play with him. Less than a year old, this lovely orange fellow will be an incredible addition to any home. His orange coat is very handsome, so lovers of ginger kitties are going to want to scoop him up asap. Interested in meeting him? Call his foster mom Laurel at 207-432-1349. The Safe Haven shelter has pairs of kittens seeking homes together because kittens are happiest when they have a litter mate to romp with. We also get solo kittens, too, so visit anyway.

(207) 229-8314 info@safehavenhumanesociety.org www.safehavenhumanesociety.org

Come enjoy the hysterics of them playing, and their tender cuteness when they snooze. We have kitties of all ages needing loving homes, we have plenty for you to consider. Our shelter is open 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday. Call 207-646-1611 for details. Update on Pudge: Beautiful short-haired calico Pudge is now in foster care, enjoying three meals a day that keep her healthy and not needing insulin. This formerly diabetic kitty is healthy but needs a permanent home where she’ll continue to receive her three daily meals. Her foster care ends September 7 and it will be so depressing if Pudge has to return to the shelter. Please consider adopting or fostering Pudge. Call 207-281-2594. Until Labor Day, our thrift shop next to the Wells IGA Supermarket will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Enjoy the huge savings throughout our store and our sidewalk

racks are filled with with $1 garments. Donations are gladly received until 3 p.m. daily. We ask for only good quality household items. For more information, call 207-636-7397. This month’s yard sale will be from August 17-19, weather permitting at the south side of the Wells Corner parking lot, 1517 Post Road from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Certain donations are welcome.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Introducing the very lovable, snuggable and stunning Silver Tabby, Max! Adopted from us as a kitten just over a year ago, sweet Max recently had to be returned to us when a family health situation occurred in his forever home with one of his humans. It’s obvious he was one very spoiled and loved little guy as he is happiest when he is being pet, loved on and getting belly rubs that cause his paws to flex as he soaks in the attention. His eyes, are a unique iridescent shade of blue that will melt your heart. He is up to date on all of his vetting and seeks a new family who will love him the way his previous family did. He’d be fine with mature children and comfortable in most any situation with other laid back dogs

We’d like to thank those who have donated so far and to ask our generous donors to dig deep and “help us to help them.

NORTH BERWICK Hi, My name is Jacko. I want to share my story in hopes of increasing my chances to be adopted. For more than two years I was held captive as a blood donor at a vet’s office in Louisiana. I performed a very important service by donating my blood to help other cats. My savior, who worked at the office, offered to take me home at night and bring me back in the morning on a daily basis. The vet would not allow it. He would not even allow my friend to pet me. My friend was very sad because I would put my paw out of my cage to attract attention and love. Finally, the vet retired and I was free! My friend took me to Pontchatrain Humane Society where I recovered while receiving lots of love and affection. Now I am on the last leg of my journey to my forever home. I am with my foster mom, Pat, in Wells, with my friends who traveled with me from Louisiana and some other kitties who are also in search of forever homes. My favorite things to do are eating and napping. Give her a call to meet me. 207-646-9120.

In the summer we evolve into vodka and tonics vs. the scotches of winter. In the summer we have our children enjoying all of our time while in winter there is a concept called school. dynamic way to express their own hopes and dreams for a more harmonious world. An athlete, philosopher, artist, musician and poet, Sri Chinmoy dedicated his life to advancing the ideals of world harmony and said, “How can we have peace? Not by talking about peace, but by walking along the road of peace.” For more information, contact Arpan DeAngelo at 718-3107327 for exact times and route.
