York Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years

By Alyssa McArdle Contributing Reporter In January 1916, a massive fire broke out at the Marshall House in York, a popular resort that occupied the space where the Stage Neck Colony condos are now. At the time, the town only had the York Beach Fire Department, and by the time the responders made it to York Harbor, the property was beyond saving. The Marshall House burned to the ground. In response to the Marshall House disaster, the town established the York Village and Corner Ever-ready Volunteer
Fire Company. The department was and still is predominately staffed with volunteers. This summer, the York Fire Department celebrates its centennial in fine fashion. “In lieu of our normal yearly field day, we are hosting an Open House on August 20,� said Fire Chief Chris Balentine. The event is open to everyone in the community and will take place at the York Firehouse, adjacent to York Hospital. The open house will offer games, prizes, firefighter meet and greets and historical displays. The fire department will also perform a

Annual Chili-Fest to be held at Wells Junior High WELLS The Wells Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their 16th Annual Chili-Fest on Saturday, August 27, at the Wells Junior High Campus on Route 1 in Wells from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Kennebunk Savings is the Primary Event Sponsor. The “Maine State CookOff�, sanctioned by the International Chili Society, is among the last events available for “chiliheads� to qualify to compete in the World Championship which will be held this year on October 21-23 in Reno, Nevada. Entrants for this cook-off have come from as far away as Florida, Nevada and Illinois. The winner of this
event will represent the State of Maine. The Cook-off will feature cooks in three categories Red Chili (traditional) made with beef and red ripened chili peppers; Green Chili (verde) made with either chicken or pork and green chili peppers and Salsa. Cash prizes and plaques are given to the winners along with bragging rights. The chili cooks, local restaurants and the Wells Fire Department will be bringing their chili for the “People’s Choice� competition with a $250 first prize. Ballots for “People’s Choice� are included in the “tasting kits� available for sale.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Wells Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund. Food vendors and crafters make

But the August 20 Open House is only a precursor to an even larger series of events next month: the York Fire Department has been chosen to host the 53rd Annual Maine State Federation of Firefighters Convention on September 9, 10 and 11. “It’s a huge honor to host the convention,� Chief Balentine said. “Each year departments put bids in to be the host. When some of the other towns heard we were celebrating 100 years this year, they withdrew their bids to let us have it.� The convention will kick off on Friday, September 9 with Light It Up!, a country western jamboree featuring the Southern City Band from 8 PM to midnight. On Saturday, September 10, an immense parade will begin at the intersection of Long Sands Rd and Woodbridge Rd and travel to York High School. Saturday’s festivities will also include parade prizes, vendors, music, dancing and a lobster banquet. On Sunday, September 11 there will be a memorial concert commemorating the 15th anniversary of 9/11 as well as the
