Wells Police Department Take Ice Bucket Challenge By Joyce Amend Staff Writer WELLS Across the country, friends and family, sports and entertainment celebrities are challenging each other to the Ice Bucket Challenge - and now even local police departments are getting into the act. The Wells Police Department was challenged by their friends at the Kennebunk police department to take the “Challenge” for the progressive neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and a bucket loader full of icy water was poured over the officers. Even though they accepted the challenge - they’re donating money too - and as of press time for this publication, they had challenged the Ogunquit PD and the Wells and Ogunquit Fire Departments to do the same. The Ice Bucket Challenge has taken the U.S. by storm. In the last two weeks, ‘Challenge’ has quite literally “soaked” the nation. Everyone from Ethel Kennedy to Justin Timberlake has poured a bucket of ice water over his or her head and challenged others do the same or make a donation to fight ALS within twenty-four hours.

Members of Wells Police Department get doused taking the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Since July 29, The ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received an astonishing $4 million in donations compared

to $1.12 million during the same time period last year. The ALS Association is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of sup-

port from those people who have been doused, made a donation, or both. These contributions further The Association’s mission to

find a cure for ALS while funding the highest quality of care for people living with the disease. “We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease,” said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative.” With only about half of the general public knowledgeable about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the Ice Bucket Challenge is making a profound difference. Bush To Be Honorary Chair of Veterans Build KENNEBUNKPORT Former President and Veteran World War II pilot George H.W. Bush will act as Honorary Chairperson of Habitat For Humanity York County Maine’s first Veterans Build. “I am proud to be able to serve my community by assisting Habitat to create affordable housing for a fellow veteran right here in Kennebunkport. This is a wonderful way for our entire community to come together to help those who have unselfishly served our Country,” said President Bush. “It is a tremendous honor to have President Bush serve in such an important role. His voice will help us tell the story of the housing struggles that many of our veterans face, both here in York County, and across the nation,” said Steve Bolton, Habitat for Humanity York County Executive Director. Statistics show that many veterans pay well above the target of 30 percent of their income for their housing needs. At Habitat for Humanity we hope that

we can help veterans successfully transition from serving their county back into their communities by supplying homeownership opportunities that fit their budgets. This project became a reality when Kennebunk residents Bill Bolinder and Heather English donated $10,000 honoring Bolinder’s veteran brother. Subsequently, The Genworth Foundation, where Bolinder serves on the Board, matched his donation of $10,000, The Town of Kennebunkport generously donated a building lot, and, Habitat for Humanity York County formed a Steering Committee made up of York County veterans, to help raise awareness, funding, and needed materials and labor to successfully complete this project. Clearing the lot has begun with hopes of beginning the construction process in early fall. For more information about homeownership opportunities, making a donation, or getting involved, visit habitatyorkcounty. org or call 207-985-4850.
