Wells Chamber to Host 22nd Annual Chili-Fest

WELLS -

The Wells Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its 22nd Annual Chili-Fest on Saturday, August 26 at the Wells Junior High campus, 1470 Post Road.

The Joe Harvey Invitational Cook-off, sanctioned by the International Chili Society, is among one of many events available for “chiliheads” to qualify to compete in the World Championship, which will be held in September in Myrtle Beach, SC. Past entrants for the cook-off have come from all over

New England and as far away as Florida, Nevada, and Illinois.

The cook-off will feature cooks and their specialty chilis in four categories: Red Chili (beef and red ripened chili peppers), Green (verde) Chili (chicken or pork and green chili peppers), and Homestyle (traditional chili with beans). There will also be a Youth Homestyle competition and a Salsa competition. Cash prizes and plaques are given to the winners, along with bragging rights.

Competitors will be presenting their chili from 11 a.m. to

3 p.m. for the “People’s Choice” competition, with a $250 first prize. Ballots for People’s Choice are included in the “tasting kits” available for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Wells Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund. Kennebunk Savings is the Primary Event Sponsor, and DF Richard Energy is the Gold Sponsor.

Vendors and crafters will also be on site to make this annual event one to remember. Parking and admission are free. For more information, visit www.wellschilifest.com.

Local Man Walks for Pancreatic Cancer Research

OGUNQUIT -

On Monday, August 21, Ogunquit resident Tim Duffy will embark on a 155-mile trek between Cape Cod and Ogunquit to support the fight against pancreatic cancer, which claimed his wife, Kate, late last year. Tim begins his journey on the day of what would be their 41st wedding anniversary at the Cape beach where they met back in 1978. Tim’s final destination will be Ogunquit Beach, where they moved several years ago for retirement.

Funds raised from Tim’s

walk will go directly to PanCAN, a national organization whose vision is to create a world in which all patients with pancreatic cancer will thrive. PanCAN’s mission improves the lives of those impacted by pancreatic cancer by advancing scientific research, building community, sharing knowledge, and advocating for pancreatic cancer patients.

Said Tim, “I lost my beautiful wife Kate to pancre-

atic cancer late last year. Court and Jared lost their mom. I’ve learned more than I would’ve liked to about this ruthless disease, from the lack of effective markers for early diagnosis, to how few meaningful treatments there are. My goal is to raise as much money as possible to give patients, like Kate, some real hope and a fighting chance. I will cover all of my own expenses,

Liaisons Aim to Reduce Stigma, Save Lives

YORK COUNTY -

In a collaborative effort between licensed behavioral health clinicians and law enforcement agencies, an initiative known as OPTIONS (Overdose Prevention Through Intensive Outreach, Naloxone, and Safety) is making significant strides to combat the stigma surrounding substance use and save lives throughout York County and the state of Maine.

This program, a partnership between support network Sweetser and the Maine Office of Behavioral Health (OBH), is designed to improve the wellbeing of individuals and families impacted by substance use

by employing harm reduction strategies, supporting recovery, and providing essential referrals for services. At the core of OPTIONS lies the commitment to education and awareness.

Each of Maine’s 16 counties boasts an OPTIONS Liaison, a licensed behavioral health clinician who collaborates closely with local emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies. This collaboration ensures a comprehensive approach to addressing substance use-related crises, aiming to deescalate situations and connect individuals with the necessary support needed. Many liaisons have personal experiences with recovery, allowing them to empathize with the challenges faced by those seeking help and to provide immediate and long-term assistance effectively.

Bailey is currently based out of the Sanford police department, and also works at the Wells Police Department on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The next clinic will be held on August 23.

Bailey’s role extends beyond emergency response, as she actively facilitates immediate medical treatment and subsequently arranges primary care,

School Supplies for Children Overseas

YORK COUNTY -

As the school year approaches, shoebox packers are making use of back-to-school prices to purchase gifts and essential items for children in need around the world. Local residents are collecting school supplies, along with personal care items and fun toys, to pack in shoeboxes. Operation Christ-

mas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries.

For many children, access to these simple items is essential to an education. This was the case for Justin, a shoebox recipient in Southeast Asia whose parents simply could not afford the supplies he needed for school.

Justin remembers the day he received a gift-filled shoebox from Operation Christmas Child and found it filled with toys and most exciting to him, school supplies. Growing up with hand-me-down clothes and used items, Thomas used to write with a pencil that wore down so short that he had to hold it using a pen cap. Having an entire packet of new pencils and a pencil sharpener all his own was a treasure to Justin. This simple gift made a lifechanging impact for the young student, opening the doors for him to receive an education.

National Collection Week is November 13-20. Participants can donate $10 per shoebox gift online and receive a tracking label to discover its destination. Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping can browse www.samaritanspurse. org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age

and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and personal note of encouragement.

Operation Christmas Child seeks to demonstrate love in a tangible way to children in need around the world. Since 1993, the organization has collected and delivered more than 209 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 170 countries and territories around the world. This year, Operation Christmas Child will celebrate its 30th year

of ministry. For more information, visit www.samaritanspurse.org/occ.

Wells Beach Updates

WELLSThe Town of Wells has recently received several inquiries regarding the status of beach maintenance and beach raking. Beach maintenance has been impacted by the presence of the Piping Plovers, an endangered, federally protected bird species present throughout the state of Maine. Piping Plovers are present on Wells beaches from the time they arrive to nest in April, until the chicks have hatched and fledged, usually mid to late July. During this time, beach maintenance is postponed in order to protect the plovers, give them space to hatch, and increase their chance of survival.

Currently, there are still a few chicks remaining on Wells beaches, and in addition there are also migrating plovers who will stop along the beaches to feed and rest. The birds still need protection so they can successfully continue their migration South. Now that the chicks have fledged, the Town of Wells is able to continue beach maintenance efforts, always being mindful of any remaining plovers still present.

The Town of Wells thanks beachgoers for their patience as

volunteers strive to keep the wellbeing of these endangered birds a priority. Raking and maintenance will resume throughout the remainder of this month, and everyone hopes beachgoers enjoy these last few weeks of summer beach time.

For more information and updates on the Piping Plovers, visit www.wellstown.org.

L: Before we get too far, we should tell everyone that being Golden Girls also means we have the aches and pains that go along with being ladies of a certain age. We have stiff joints and therefore aren’t moving as quickly as we used to, especially me. We both have heart murmurs, and mine requires a monthly medication to keep me healthy and happy.

B: I have dental issues and need a cleaning and some extractions, the cost of which will be covered by the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) post-adoption.

L: An AWS veterinarian will go over the details of our

medical care at your adoption appointment so you’ll know what to expect. Don’t let our little old lady aches and pains get you down.

B: We will bring so much love and joy to your home! Like I said earlier, we’re full of spunk, fun and adventure, though at a reasonable level.

L: We’re not crazy puppies anymore, that’s for sure. Slow and steady is our best feature.

Pros and Cons of Sodium Consumption

NATIONWIDEThe typical American diet tends to be high in sodium, with many processed foods containing high amounts of salt for for both flavoring and preservation. Even though sodium has a bad reputation, salt in certain amounts is necessary for the body to function properly. The following is a deeper look into how sodium can be beneficial and how it can be harmful.

Pros Sodium is one of the body’s three major electrolytes, with potassium and chloride being the others. Salt helps regulate blood pressure and blood volume, transmit impulses for nerve function and muscle contraction, and helps regulate the acid-base balance of blood and bodily fluids.

According to SFGate’s Healthy Eating, salt can help with healthy muscle contractions and promotes muscle function during physical activity.

The Rush University Medical Center explains that sodium also regulates body heat. The hypothalamus, the body’s “thermostat,” signals the middle layer of the skin to bring salt and water to the skin’s surface when a person is overheating (sweating) to help cool the body.

Cons

One of the reasons why sodium is vilified so often is that too much can lead to hypertension, better known as high blood pressure. According to research

by the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension program, directed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, there is a direct correlation between the amount of salt consumed and blood pressure levels. Exceeding the 2,400 mg daily limit can push blood pressure into dangerous territory. Some doctors suggest ideal sodium intake should not exceed 1,500 mg daily.

Too much sodium also can contribute to fluid retention in the body, leading to swelling of the legs and feet, a problem for individuals who are not physically active.

The kidneys are the filters of the body, and people with kidney disease need to be especially vulnerable to adverse health consequences if they consume too much salt. In such situations, the kidneys may not be able to eliminate the excess sodium in the body, potentially leading to hypertension or heart issues, according to Davita Kidney Care. Also, too much salt may contribute to the formation of kidney stones.

Sodium is necessary for life, but overconsumption may lead to health issues that are entirely preventable. Monitoring exactly how much salt is consumed ensures people can stay within healthy ranges.

Pointers for Post-Wedding Brunch

NATIONWIDE -

A post-wedding brunch is a nice way to wrap up a wedding weekend, and gives the newly married couple a chance to spend more time with close friends and family, particularly if the couple isn’t immediately leaving for the honeymoon. A brunch is the perfect way to send guests on their way with a few extra hugs and full bellies.

A brunch is not a necessity by any means, but it is a nice gesture and a good way to wrap up a wedding weekend. Couples who plan on hosting brunches can consider the following tips:

Delegate

The happy couple already has a lot of details on their plate to ensure the wedding occurs with minimal hiccups. A parent

or member of the bridal party may want to take on the task of planning the brunch to alleviate stress on the newly betrothed.

Funding

There are no hard rules about who will pay for the brunch, but typically it is the person who hosts it. Couples may want to set aside funds in their budgets for the brunch, or parents of the couple may want to contribute.

Timing

Seeing as it likely was a late evening prior, the brunch should occur as late as possible in the morning, with 11 a.m. or noon as a good start time, so everyone has a chance to sleep in and recuperate. A typical wedding brunch runs between two and

three hours.

Ease

The brunch planner should make it easy on themselves by finding a venue that is close by. Sometimes that venue may be a lodging location if the couple arranged for overnight accommodations. For example, if overnight guests stayed at a hotel near the reception site, that hotel may have a small conference or party room where the brunch can be held. The brunch planner can work with the hotel staff to cater the event; otherwise, they can find a nearby restaurant that specializes in breakfast or brunch foods that is convenient to most.

Invites

For those with big budgets, anyone can be invited to the wedding brunch, but it may be more manageable if it is restricted to only close friends and family, or only those who opted for the overnight wedding accommodations.

The shelter’s vintage-thriftantique shop at 1784 Post Road is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shop is a fantastic place to spend a few hours searching for great buys and treasures. Safe Haven accepts clean, gently used donations every Tuesday 4-7 p.m. and Saturday 12-3 p.m. Thank you!

Table of Plenty and The Catered Event Unite in Hardship

BERWICK & SOUTH BERWICK -

The saying “It takes a village,” perfectly describes the relationship that developed in 2020 between Marcia Gagnon of The Catered Event in South Berwick and the community kitchen

Table of Plenty in Berwick.

When the shutdown was declared that March due to the pandemic, the Table of Plenty, like so many businesses and community kitchens across the country, had to temporarily close its doors. After six weeks of closure, however, Table of Plenty volunteers still wanted to do something to help neighbors in need. They knew that many in the area were being challenged with having to shop and cook for themselves in the middle of the pandemic, and of the isolation that prevailed during that time. The masks, hand sanitizers,

distancing rules, and one-way aisles in the stores and supermarkets made food shopping for the 100 meals each week a challenge for Table of Plenty volunteers. Knowing that area businesses were also struggling, a relationship started to form between Table of Plenty and The Catered Event to provide homemade entrees twice a month to area residents in need. The idea turned out to be a win-win for both

sides, allowing Table of Plenty to serve its Berwick neighbors again, and helping The Catered Event continue to provide for the locals of South Berwick.

So after 39 months and over 8,600 meals, Table of Plenty is once again able to provide meals in-house, with the help of returning volunteers and ongoing donations from area churches and individuals. The organization will miss discovering what cre-

OGUNQUITAmerican classic and folk rock songwriter, musician, and performing artist Jon PousetteDart is set to perform at Jonathan’s Ogunquit on Friday, August 25.

Active as both a performer and a recording artist for over 40 years, Jon founded The PousetteDart Band, an American soft rock group active in the 1970s and early 1980s. The band went on to record a series of albums for Capitol Records, two of which made the Billboard album chart. Their single “For Love,” reached #83 on the Billboard singles chart in 1979.

Jon and his band were a mainstay of album radio, a favorite on the college circuit, and became one of the busiest touring groups in the U.S., working with such acts as The Byrds, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, The Eagles, James Taylor, The J. Geils Band, Eddie Money, Manfred Mann, Jonathan Edwards, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Emmylou Harris, Gary Wright, Robert Palmer, Randy Newman, Journey, Billy Joel, NRBQ, and many more, playing arenas from coast to coast.

While the original group disbanded in the early 1980s, Jon kept performing with original drummer Eric Parker and continued writing and producing

into the 1990s, when he returned to Nashville to begin recording again on his own. Jon has since turned out five solo albums, including 2015’s “Talk,” featuring some of his best songwriting to date.

Jon tours in many incarnations: solo, as an acoustic duo and with his highly entertaining band, featuring Malcom Gold (Sheryl Crow, India.Arie) on bass and harmony vocals, Eric Parker (Joe Cocker, Mick Taylor) on drums, and Jim Chapdelaine (Al Anderson, Phoebe Snow) on guitar/vocals.

No matter which configuration Jon performs, the audience can always count on an entertaining and professional performance. For more information, visit www.pousette-dart.com. For more information on Jon Pousette-Dart at Jonathan’s, visit www.jonathansogunquit.com.

Outdoor Jazz at St. Peter’s

CAPE NEDDICK -

The annual Jazz at St. Peter’s concert will be held on Sunday, August 27 at 4 p.m. on the church rectory lawn, alongside the picturesque Atlantic Ocean.

The eighteen musicians comprising The New Legacy Swing Band have been entertaining audiences from Cape Cod to Portland to the Lakes Region for over 25 years, and have been

performing at St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal church to sell out performances. The ensemble’s diverse library of tunes spans the decades, from the Big Band era to 1960s and early 1970s arena rock, with songs sung by such greats as Stan Kenton, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Chicago, to name a few. The band is divided into five sections: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, rhythm, and vocals.

Music, Masts, and Lobster Traps

KENNEBUNK & BATH -

Preparations are underway in Bath for a day-long festival celebrating Maine’s lobstering heritage. “Music, Masts, and Lobster Traps” will be held on Sunday, August 27 at the Maine Maritime Museum. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance (MLCA) which, with support from the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA), is working to ensure a vibrant future for Maine’s fishing families and the communities in which they live and work.

“Maine and lobster go hand in hand, which is why it’s almost unbelievable to think there could come a day when Maine’s iconic lobster industry is forced out of

business,” said event organizer Jesse Roche, a commercial fisherman from Bath. “Our way of life is at risk, and I want people to see that we all need to work together to protect it. We need to celebrate this industry that makes Maine such a special state.”

Dayside activities, starting at 9:30 a.m., are open to anyone with paid admission to the museum, and current members of the MLA receive free admission.

Demonstrations and educational exhibits will include a lobster education center, a trap building demonstration, aquaculture demonstration, a pogie seining exhibit, an emergency survival raft and gear demonstra-

Wine and cheese will be available during the performance, and guests are invited to bring their own lawn chairs. The church will also have their own chairs set up for the performance. Proceeds go to St. Peter’s Preservation Fund, which was built in 1897. Over 300 tickets were sold last summer. “Lady Windermere’s Fan” at Hamilton House

SOUTH BERWICKTheater in the Open returns to the gardens and grounds of Hamilton House on Saturday, August 26 at 5 p.m., with a lively production of playwright Oscar Wilde’s comedy, “Lady Windermere’s Fan.” Audiences are invited to bring a picnic and a blanket or chairs to enjoy this annual outdoor theater event.

“Lady Windermere’s Fan” was Wilde’s first produced play, and was an instant success on the London stage in 1892. Lady Windermere discovers that her husband has been hiding a secret, and when that secret arrives at her birthday party, Lady Windermere is forced to choose between society and her freedom. Of course, everything is not as it seems!

Filled with hints of delicious scandal and Wilde’s legendary wit and sparkling dialogue, this great comedy of manners skewers

Victorian upper-class sensibilities as the audience learns that “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

“Lady Windermere’s Fan” is directed by Obie Award Winner Rory Pelsue, making this his Theater in the Open directorial debut. Pelsue was most recently an actor with the company in its 2015 production of “Twelfth Night.” The show features an 11-member ensemble of local, regional, and New York-based actors including Aisha Delilah as Lady Windermere, Paul-Emile Cendron as Lord Windermere, and Cara Olansky as Mrs. Erlynne. Additional cast members are Nikole Beckwith and Edward F. Speck of Newburyport, MA, Holly Little Van Straaten of Danvers, CT, Adrianna Neefus of Salem, MA, Lia Madeline of Boston, MA, Allegra Dubus-Brandolini of Exeter, NH, Dylan C. Wack of Brooklyn,

NY, and Bonniejean Wilbur of Newfields, NH. The production stage manager is Amanda Martindale of Amesbury, MA, and the production dramaturg is Sophie Siegel-Warren of Providence, RI. This production is supported by a grant provided by the Friendship Foundation.

James Kennerley at Church on the Cape

KENNEBUNKPORTThe Keith McClelland Community Music Foundation is thrilled to welcome back James Kennerley to the organ bench at Church on the Cape in Kennebunkport. James will present an evening of patriotic marches and familiar classical tunes, with a finishing touch of his own improvisation on songs selected by the audience.

A native of the United Kingdom, James recently became a United States citizen, and is currently a Municipal Organist for the city of Portland, performing concerts on the Kotzschmar organ inside Merrill Auditorium. Internationally known as a performer, composer, arranger, and choral director, James

has performed across England, Europe, and the United States. He has served as music director for three Episcopal churches in New York and Connecticut, and served most recently at St. Paul’s Choir School and Parish in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. James also assumes an additional role as Music Minister at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary in Falmouth.

James’ talent for playing music started at a young age at the family piano. While a young chorister at Chelmsford Cathedral in the UK, he became fascinated with the idea of playing the pipe organ, with its thundering low notes and trumpet-like high notes. Eager to learn more, James soon discovered he would have to

Library Welcomes Author Cathie Pelletier Community Chorus Invites Singers

KITTERY -

On Thursday, August 24 at 6 p.m., novelist and Maine

native Cathie Pelletier will be at Rice Public Library to discuss her latest book, “Northeaster: A Story of Courage and Survival in the Blizzard of 1952.”

The book is a meticulously researched page-turner, a nonfiction re-creation of the accounts of survivors and victims of the storm that killed six people in Maine. “Northeaster” weaves together a rich cast of characters whose lives were uprooted and endangered by the two-day storm. Housewives and lobstermen, loggers and soldiers were all trapped as snow piled

in drifts up to twenty feet high. The storm smothered hundreds of travelers in their cars, covered entire towns, and broke ships in half. In the midst of the blizzard’s chaos, there were remarkable acts of heroism and

courageous generosities. Doctors braved the storm to help deliver babies. Ordinary people kept their wits while buried in their cars, and others made their way out of forests to find kindhearted strangers willing to take them in.

On the dust jacket, Bernd Heinrich calls the book “a riveting story” that uses the storm as “the framework, but the picture it holds is of the characters themselves.”

Cathie Pelletier has written over a dozen novels, including “Candles on Bay Street” (which was made into a film in 2006), “The One-Way Bridge,” and “A Year After Henry.” Her second middle grade novel, “The Mystery Traveler at Lake Fortune,” was just released this past July. “Northeaster” is Pelletier’s third nonfiction title and the first to share some of Maine’s history. After her talk, there will be time for questions and a book signing.

Rice Public Library is located at 8 Wentworth Street in Kittery. For more information, visit www.rice.lib.me.us.

. . . BRUNCH from page 6

While there is no need to offer party favors at a wedding brunch, a simple “thank you” gift bag is always a nice added touch. However, if any favors from the wedding were left behind, they can be displayed at the brunch in case any guests forgot to take theirs.

Food

Brunch implies a mix of breakfast and lunch treats, which can include anything from bagels, muffins and omelets, to waffles, cold cuts, and quiches. Some venues may offer full pancake and waffle stations, a fullon breakfast buffet package, or they may even hire a local food truck business to fully cater the brunch. A simple cocktail offering consisting of mimosas, bellinis and Bloody Marys, or even a Bloody Mary and mimosa bar, may be offered, in addition to nonalcoholic beverages, such as sodas and sparkling waters, and coffee and tea service. Some venues may even include bartending services for a nominal extra charge in their brunch packages.

Whatever the choices the couple may decide upon, there are a variety of options available on the day after the “big day.” Throwing a post-wedding brunch is a perfect and thoughtful way to wrap up a successful wedding celebration.

Proposed Delisting of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Superfund Site

e U.S. EPA is proposing to delist the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Superfund site (the Site) from the National Priorities List (NPL). EPA has determined that the site cleanup is complete and no further action is required. e agency will take public comments on the proposed deletion, with a comment period to begin on or about August 16 to September 15 at midnight.

Proposed Deletion Information:

EPA and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP) have concluded that all appropriate Superfund responses under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) have been implemented and that no further cleanup is necessary for the Site. Moreover, EPA and the MEDEP have determined that cleanup actions conducted at the Site to date continue to be protective of public health and the environment. Long-term stewardship will be ongoing to maintain institutional controls, security and ensure future land use is consistent with the remediation. Superfund law requires reviews every ve years a er cleanups to ensure the remedy continues to protect human health and the environment. A proposed or nal deletion does not prevent future actions under the Superfund law.

e Federal Docket for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard proposed deletion contains the information to support the deletion. e public is invited to comment on the proposed decision to delete this Site from the NPL. e public comment period will begin August 16, 2023, and extend for 30 days.
