Yacht Club Race Team Completes Successful Season YORK HARBOR The Agamenticus Yacht Club Race Team has completed another successful summer racing season. The team consisted of fifteen sailors from southern Maine. Five sailors ages 10 to 15 raced in the Optimist Dinghy Class, and ten sailors ages 14 to 17 raced in 420s and Lasers. Both teams were coached by former AYC sailors, Eric Morrison for the 420/Laser sailors and McVitty LaPointe for the Optimist sailors. Agamenticus Yacht Club, located in York Harbor, is a club

that promotes boating skills and water safety through their classes and programs geared towards people of all ages and all skill levels. The Race Team is just one of the many learning opportunities offered by AYC. Starting in June, the teams met and practiced in the waters off of York Harbor several days a week. Practice consisted of improving boat handling skills, working on racing strategy and tactics, tuning boats and equipment, and conditioning to improve stamina and strength. In addition to competing in

a small southern Maine regatta each week, the teams travelled to several large regattas around New England. Both the Optimist and the 420/Laser Teams traveled to Camden for the Northeast Junior Olympics, as well as Marblehead, MA, for Marblehead Junior Race Week. The 420/Laser Team also traveled to Scituate, MA, for Scituate Race Week and to Kennebunk for the New England Youth Laser Championships held at the Kennebunk Beach Improvement AsSee YACHTS page 6...

BERWICK Summer and fall are peak times for motorcycle riders here in New England, and Berwick’s Chapter 79 Legion Riders are making the most of it. This young Chapter has a solid core of ten members with plans to keep on rolling and keep on growing, thanks in large part to the efforts of Dennis Ouellette, the Chapter’s first director. Ouellette was inspired to start Charles S. Hatch Post 79’s American Legion Riders (ALR) Chapter in 2012 after hearing a

presentation by Paul L’Heureux, Adjutant for the American Legion Department of Maine. With the assistance of fellow Legionnaire Stan Sheldon, these two dedicated veterans hit the ground riding and never looked back! (The Legion Riders was founded in 1993 by a small group of American Legion members in Michigan who were motorcycle enthusiasts. There are now 106,000 ALR members in over a thousand Chapters in the U.S. and overseas and are particularly well known for their charity work.) Ouellette got the Chapter off to a great start by hosting the Chapter’s monthly meetings and supporting the Chapter’s monthly rides while guiding their initial forays in fund raising and community service. Highlights of Ouellette’s tenure include trips to the Field of Flags in Plaistow, NH; conducting a community roadside clean-up this past Spring and holding various fundraisers to include a gun raffle with the proceeds supporting homeless veterans. His efforts culminated in a history making ride from Maine to

Washington, D.C. in late May to participate in the annual Rolling Thunder First Amendment Demonstration Run, accompanied Stan Sheldon and Mike Urich, the Chapter’s current Vice Director. While this Post #79 Chapter participated in a multitude of great trips and fundraisers thus far this year, the best is yet to come! In late July, the Chapter headed to Killington, VT for an overnight trip, taking in the sights and sounds in the center of the Green Mountain state. In mid-August, they are headed to North Conway, NH, which promises to be a ride with breathtaking scenery showcasing nature at its best! In early September, the group is headed to the Owl’s Head Antique Motorcycle show, coupled with a side trip to Booth Bay. Tom Hawthorne, the Chapter’s current director, is looking for new members to join this very active group and emphasized that this is a co-ed organization and that both men and women can apply. To learn, more, check out www.legion. org/riders or call 603-617-5727.

~ News ~ York County Senior College Announces Fall Class Schedule YORK COUNTY – Those over 50 who are interested in “arts and letters” will find a variety of courses of interest in the York County Senior College fall lineup of classes in the Sanford/Springvale and Saco areas. Classes begin the week of September 14 and most run for eight weeks. On Monday mornings, Marjorie Hey will teach newcomers to “Play Go,” a game designed to stimulate thought and enhance your life. That afternoon, participants will look back at and discuss a turbulent time in our history through “Psychology Looks at Songs of the 60’s,” with Mike Berkowitz. There are three classes from which to choose on Tuesday. “Meditation for Relaxation” is a four-week morning class at the Trinity Episcopal Church taught by Adele Millette, a seasoned professional in the art. Also that morning, students can examine “Food, Glorious Food” as seen through the movies at The Wardwell; the guide for this class is Dr. Cynthia Mowles. For those interested in literature, Dr. Joseph Valenza offers “Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 1 and 2: or Is It Really Fallstaff?” Tuesday afternoons at the Hazleton House. There are three class choices at Trinity Episcopal Church in Saco on Thursdays. In the morning, learners can choose between “Let’s Do Watercolors,” a popular class for novices and returning regulars, skillfully led by Pat Wood, and “Great Decisions, a combination of reading and discussion under the tutelage of Carol Doyle. That afternoon, Joan Mento offers a different look at The Bard in the more comedic side of “Shakespeare: Man of the Theater.” Returning to Springvale

Library on Wednesday mornings is “Bring a Book to Breakfast,” Arlene Jackson’s class focused on a variety of reading materials aimed at provoking thoughtful, and often humorous, discussions. The remaining Sanford/Springvale classes take place Fridays. In the morning, Dr. David Moberg’s “Open Art Group” welcomes beginners and advanced artists to come together and work in their own media. Fred Boyle continues his historical series through discussion and reading about “American First Ladies,” also offered Friday mornings. Registration closes September 4. Students can register by sending in the forms received by mail, calling 207282-4030, or visiting yorkcountyseniorcollege.org. For more information, go to maineseniorcollege.org.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Art Videos at the Gallery Series Continues at Barn Gallery OGUNQUIT – The Barn Gallery’s Art Videos at the Gallery series will featuring the lives and art of Joseph Fiore, Robert Hamilton, and Roland Salazar Wednesday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and there is plenty of parking. Come early and enjoy the works of Ogunquit Art Association artists. These three artists were part of the contingent of artists who made their way to Maine in the 1950s. All came to visit, sometimes for years, before finding that the way of life and the climate were an inspiration for their art. Joseph Fiore was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1925. His father, Salvatore was a founding 40-year member of the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1938-1941 he attended summer and Saturday studio classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art. 1946-48 he studied with Albers, Bolotowsky, and DeKooning at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and attended the California School of Fine Arts 1948-49. He also held teaching positions at the Philadelphia College of Art, Maryland College of Art, and the National Academy. In May of 2001, Joseph Fiore of Jefferson, Maine and New York City was awarded the Andrew Carnegie Prize at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Robert Hamilton (19172004) was born in Seneca Falls, New York, entered Rhode Island School of Design in 1935 and earned his degree in painting in 1939. He then earned a

Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II as a captain and P47 bomber pilot with 100 missions. He returned to the Rhode Island School of Design in 1948 and taught painting and drawing there for 34 years. He and his wife Nancy retired in 1981 to Port Clyde, Maine. There they set up a garage studio and three small galleries nearby where they presented new work each summer for visitors. Hamilton wan an influential, modernist painter, a genius respected for improvisation. Hamilton’s friend and neighbor, Andrew Wyeth, called him a “real painter. His paintings are based on jazz-like im-

“Beehive is a Melodic, Thoughtful Stroll Down Memory Lane

By Scott Andrews, Staff Columnist ARUNDEL – Nowadays the “jukebox musical genre has become so popular that it’s ubiquitous. That’s especially true of summer theaters, where nearly every company schedules one or two jukebox musicals each season.

Route 35 Guitars

The jukebox formula is simple: A group of performers sing a collection of old pop hits from the past that are loosely connected by some thematic thread -- but otherwise unrelated. It’s a flexible formula that has resulted in many shows and happy audiences. The jukebox musical rage began exactly 30 years ago, and “Beehive was the prototype and paragon. Created in a New York cabaret in 1985 by Larry Gallagher, “Beehive enjoyed extraordinary success and has become a staple of theater companies across the U.S., spawning a growing legion of similar shows that continues to the present. Health & Fitness Maine Still Falls Short When Ensuring Access to Care for Those with Cancer

STATEWIDE – Although Maine has made progress in advancing legislation that reduces incidences and suffering from cancer, the state is falling short when it comes to increased access to care. According to the latest edition

of How Do You Measure Up?: A Progress Report on State Legislative Activity to Reduce Cancer Incidence and Mortality, Maine was one of only three states to measure up to policy recommendations in six of the nine issue areas ranked. The report was released today by

the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). The results of the report hit home for Jan Ronan of Gorham, who is living with cervical cancer, and the bills and treatments associated with such a diagnosis. While she considers herself fortunate to have health insurance coverage that helps her afford her treatment, she knows that this is not always the case, particularly for those hardworking, low-income residents who would be eligible for increased access to care through federal Medicaid funding. “As advocates – many who are survivors like me – we’ve worked hard to educate Mainers about ways to prevent and treat cancer, but our voice is not enough if state and local policymakers don’t take action to fund and implement state policies and programs that are proven to

save lives, said Ronan. “In addition to recognizing victories in the fight against cancer, this report highlights those areas where we need to work harder – and one of those is the need to increase access to care for all Mainers. “In 2015, more than 8,800 people in Maine will be diagnosed with cancer and approximately 3,300 will die of the disease, said Hilary Schneider, director of government relations for ACS CAN in Maine. “For many of those men and women, they will have a financial battle on top of the physical battle they are already fighting. This is not something anyone should have to endure, particularly when there is a fiscally intelligent solution in the form of federal funds that are waiting in the wings. All we need is for Governor LePage to say yes. How Do You Measure

Up? rates states in nine specific areas of public policy that can help fight cancer, including smoke-free laws, tobacco tax levels, funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs and cessation coverage under Medicaid, funding for cancer screening programs and restricting indoor tanning devices for minors. The report also looks at whether or not a state has said yes to federal funds available to increase access to care through its Medicaid program, has passed policies proven to increase patient quality of life and offers a wellbalanced approach to pain medications. A color-coded system classifies how well a state is doing in each issue. Green shows that a state has adopted evidence-based policies and best practices; yellow indicates moderate movement toward the benchmark and red shows where states are falling short. How Maine Measures Up: Green: Cigarette Tax Rates, Smoke-free Laws, Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program Funding,Medicaid Coverage of Tobacco Cessation Services, Access to Palliative Care, Pain Policy. Red: Indoor Tanning Device Restrictions, Increased Access to Medicaid, Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Funding. While Maine made progress this year by passing laws to increase access to pain and symptom management for those fighting serious diseases like cancer and to prohibit use of e-cigarettes in any public places where smoking is already prohibited, opportunities remain to reduce the burden of cancer in Maine. “We have seen a slowdown in the decline in smoking rates in recent years because lawmakers have not prioritized the basic principles that we know are successful when it comes to fighting tobacco use: significant and regular tobacco tax increases, strong smoke-free laws that include e-cigarettes, and an adequately funded, comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation program, said Schneider. “In addition to tobacco prevention efforts, it is imperative Mainers have access to recommended cancer screening tests to detect cancer at its See MAINE page 23...

Director Gary John LaRosa and music director Raymond Bailey skillfully helm this production, which features six young women in a variety of costumes and sub-ensembles. The evening’s top perfor-

I also like Caroline Keegan as Leslie Gore, Allison Sandler as Petula Clark and Virginia Vass as the lead singer of the Chiffons. Vass is also the show’s principal narrator. Luke D’Alessandro’s costumes are eye-catching, with

his slinky, coruscating Supremes dresses standing out as his best effort. D’Alessandro’s scenic design, anchored by a curious visual triad of lips, lipstick and hairspray, is less effective. Family Appreciates Beach Wheelchair OGUNQUIT – Ruth Cheshire recently sent a message to the Rotary Club of Ogunquit praising the club for its part in making beach wheelchairs available to those in need at Ogunquit Beach. The family traveled from NJ for a wedding in Ogunquit and spent two days on the beach. Cheshire’s brother is terminally ill and cannot walk. She stated that the time the entire family was able to spend on the beach was a highlight of their visit. Over the years, the Rotary Club of Ogunquit has raised funds to purchase several of these specialized, balloon-tired

wheelchairs. The Ogunquit Fire Department and lifeguards at Ogunquit Beach manage the storage and distribution of the equipment. FMI: www.ogunquitrotaryme.org.

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS Remember to join us for our Grand Opening Celebration at Safe Haven’s new Adoption Center, 1420 Post Road (Rt. 1), on Aug. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our building is set back off the road where it’s quiet, and our driveway is right next to the Wells Library. Join us for refreshments, meet the kitties, and bid on our silent auction items. Tour our cage-free facility, meet our adoptable kitties and our volunteers. Learn more about Safe Haven and how our No-Kill mission is spreading worldwide. We’re receiving wonderful donations for the silent auction, including a GoPro Hero video camera, Kindle Paperwhite e-book reader and Wi-Fi, plus paintings, gift baskets, and more! Meet Marissa and Violet who have been with us for several years. Nearly identical, they’re beautiful long-haired black and whites. They currently reside at our adoption center, enjoying life and being pampered. Marissa, Violet’s mom, is shy and watchful and would love a quiet home where she and her daughter can relax and soak in the affections of a loving family. Marissa and Violet arrived fearful and lacking confidence, but over time

Safe Haven Humane Society 1420 Post Rd. (Rt. 1) / PO Box 91 Wells, ME 04090

they’ve become more trusting. Violet, the daughter, is friendly and braver than Marissa and has come far in socializing. Safe Haven really wants Marissa and Violet to find their forever home soon, so the normal adoption fee has been reduced. Senior kitties are a special concern, because all kitties should get to enjoy their golden years in a loving and permanent home. Older kitties are most deserving of love and companionship, since they’ve waited longest for their forever home. This brings us to Mooglie, age 14, and Little Man, age 10. This pair’s journey makes them most worthy of all! Over the years, these two have

bounced from their home, to foster care, back to their previous home, then to a shelter, and finally to a very loving new home where they truly blossomed! Then, due to a family collapse, they had to return to their Safe Haven. It’s heartbreaking that Moogley and Little Man are homeless once again! They really miss being part of a family, being loved and holding a special place in someone’s heart. We ache, because now that they’re older, they might never know a real home again -- unless we find a very special person or family through our Home for Life Foster Program. Beautiful Mooglie, with her gorgeous long torti coat and affectionate manner, sits and mews at the door, waiting for someone to pay attention to her. Quiet Little Man, with his handsome Blue Point Siamese markings and dazzling blue eyes, watches for you to talk to him and comfort him with kindness. Mooglie requires a dab of thyroid medicine (which we’ll provide) on her inner ear twice a day. She’s fine with it, and doesn’t resist. They’ll only eat Friskies canned food. If you can’t afford it, we’ll provide that, too. These are quiet, easyto-care-for kitties! So how about it? You supply the love, and we’ll pay their vet bills for the rest of their lives. This placement is one of our most critically needed, as they are most deserving and need your love more than ever. Both kitties are at our center, waiting to meet you. Come and meet them during this Saturday’s Open House!

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Name Your Own Price Cats So nice we’re doing it twice! Our last “Name Your Own Price promotion was quite the success, but we’ve still got many cats looking for a new home. So, we decided to bring the promotion back, only this time it’s bigger and better! From now through August 31, when you adopt a cat 6 months or older from Animal Welfare Society, you will be able to name your own adoption price. $20, $13, $6, even $100, the price is up to you! Naturally, donations made at the time of adoption would be greatly appreciated. We have a wide variety of cats all looking for a new home and they would love to meet you. Hurry on in today to

find your new kitty companion for the price that you want. Meet Yutumbo, an 8-year old short-haired cat with a big name and a big size to match. Yes, Yutumbo is a bit on the hefty side, but he really looks more like a weightlifter who skips leg days. In a new home, with a steady diet, and occasional playtime, he’ll lose the extra pounds in no time. It’ll be a challenge to get him motivated though, his charm has a way of keeping his people engaged in petting him and relaxing with him. Yutumbo would make a great fit to just about any household.

This sweetie and the many other kittens in our care, will be ready to meet the public this week, but they are not yet old enough to leave their devoted Moms. All our furry little clients are spayed or neutered, necessary vaccinations are completed and have been vetted for a wellness exam. If you have been thinking a kitten or adult cat would be a nice addition to your family, this is a great time to bring your new addition home. In addition to a very nice selection of bright eyed, sweet, personable kittens, we have a really good group of young adult cats and a limited number of older adult cats also looking to you for their forever loving family. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, How do I switch to cordless mouse? I just got this laptop with windows 8.1 yesterday. Thanks, EJ Dear EJ, When you purchase a cordless mouse, it will come with a small USB device that you plug into one of the USB ports in your laptop. That USB receiver will communicate with the wireless mouse and you will be able to use it. Be patient when you plug the USB device in and turn on the mouse for the first time. (Most wireless devices have an on/off switch to conserve the battery) It often takes windows a few minutes to recognize the device and get it working. Once it starts working, however, it will work right off the next time you start your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I use Blue Mail on my Android phone. With that app, I can read email from the three accounts I use: Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! I used to use Outlook Express on my computer to do this, but obviously I can’t do that anymore. Is there another email program out there that will consolidate my emails into one program? Thanks, Cliff Dear Cliff, In my experience, Mozilla

WS

Thunderbird is an excellent replacement for Outlook Express. Thunderbird does allow you to work with more than one email account, it has more features than the email program that comes with Windows 8 and it is easy to backup and restore your messages. Thunderbird can be downloaded free of charge at: www.mozilla. org and is fairly easy to install and set up with your email addresses. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Will you write about Microsoft Office 2013’s OneNote? It is so confusing to me. Thanks, Mary Dear Mary, OneNote is actually a program that I use all the time, and because I can take my notes with me on my iPhone and/or iPad, I find more and more uses for it. Let’s start with what OneNote is. OneNote is a digital note taking application. Think if it as a notebook. I might be dating

myself, but I remember those trapper- keeper notebooks that had pages to write in, and pockets to keep things in, OneNote is kind of the digital version of a trapper- keeper. When you open OneNote, you will see a mostly empty notebook waiting for you to fill it with tabs across the top, and pages down the right side. In my “Work notebook, for example, I have a tab on the top for this newsletter, and a list of pages down the right hand side, one page for each week of the year. You can create as many notebooks as you want, just click on “File, then, “New select a location to save your notebook (if you save it in “OneDrive you will be able to access the information in your notebook on your mobile devices as well as other computers) and type a name for your notebook. You can break your notebook down into sections using the tabs across the top. Each section

can then hold individual pages which are listed down the right side. I hope this helps you get started with OneNote. I would love to answer more specific questions about how to use the program, and maybe someone can share how they use OneNote Elizabeth Dear Computer lady I got a message that says “The user profile service - service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded. Does it cost much to have someone open my register and fix it? I’m afraid I would mess it up. Thank you for all your help, Carol Dear Carol, That message means that you have a corrupt user profile. This seems to be a fairly common problem lately, and while it is not easy to fix, I have success-

37

fully fixed it for quite a few of my customers recently. I don’t know what the computer shops in your area charge for this service, but in my shop, the cost is either two or three hours of labor depending on what is needed to set you up with a working user profile. The good news is that Windows 8 handles a corrupt user profile much better than Windows 7. It automatically creates a new user profile for you if the old one becomes corrupt. This way, you can keep using the computer and get the files from your old profile. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. People and Business Profiles The New School High School Offers Info Nights KENNEBUNK – It is not too late to apply to The New School (TNS), an independent high school in Kennebunk serving southern Maine. The school has “open enrollment – applications are accepted at any time. There are currently openings in all four grades, and homeschoolers are welcome to attend part-time. The school will be hosting a series of Info Nights in three communities. They will take place 6-7 p.m., on Tuesday, August 25 at Acton Town Hall, Wednesday, August 26 at McArthur Public Library in Biddeford, and Thursday, August 27 at The New School in Kennebunk. TNS students and parents will be on hand to

describe their experiences at this unique school. Tuition at TNS is well below the state average for private schools. It is a “School of Choice for Arundel and Acton – those towns cover tuition for residents. A state approved school, TNS offers small class sizes and a hands-on, creative curriculum that is adaptable to various learning styles. Students have a great deal of choice in the curriculum that helps them discover their passions. Independent studies, apprenticeships, travel and adventure are hallmarks of education at TNS. “The school is perfect for teens who do best in small classes and enjoy active, project-based learning, says

RE/MAX Realty One Grows Again

Principal Marylyn Wentworth. Rather than using standardized testing or grades, TNS uses proficiency-based assessment, which employs a variety of ways for students to demonstrate progress. Since the school’s inception in 2000, TNS students have been accepted at over fifty colleges, including Ivy League schools, and 95 percent of students have been accepted by the college of their first choice. Acton Town Hall is located at 35 H Road in Acton, McArthur Public Library is located at 270 Main St. in Biddeford, and The New School is located at 38 York St. (Route 1 South) in Kennebunk. To learn more about The New School visit www. tnsk.org or call 207-985-3745.
