Beachgoers See More Jellyfish YORK COUNTY This summer, Maine’s beaches have been frequented by remarkably large lion’s mane jellyfish. Glimpses and photographs of these guests have shocked and captivated people around the state, including Senior Research Scientist Nick Record at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay. Since 2015, Record has run an ecosystem modeling project based on jellyfish sightings by citizen scientists along the coast of Maine and
Atlantic Canada. Interested beachgoers send him basic information about the type, size, and location of the jelly they spot. Record plugs this data into a mathematical model he developed, and generates a forecast map that shows the likelihood of more jellyfish sightings throughout the region. The summer of 2020 has been an odd one for jellyfish. Beachgoers reported far more sightings of lion’s mane jellyfish than anything else, and they have been unusually big. Reports poured in about animals between two
and three feet in diameter, and a few described gelatinous masses six feet across. Lion’s mane jellyfish are typical in the Gulf of Maine, but what inflated many of this summer’s specimens is unclear. Record suspects it may have to do with the increasingly warm water temperatures that have become the new normal in the Gulf of Maine, or perhaps a change in the availability of the jellyfish’s food. what the Fall semester will look like, and just in time for a September 8 opening. In a letter written in July, the new President of YCCC, Michael Fischer, wrote “Given the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and to keep you and the rest of our campus community safe, we are taking several measures and steps in order to reduce the number of people on campus.” For instance, on-campus instruction will be limited to those students whose courses
require hands-on learning in a shop or lab or demonstrations on equipment located on campus. These classes will be smaller and meet physical distancing requirements. All courses that can be taught remotely will be using Brightspace, an interactive software for blended classroom learning. The delivery mode of each course can be found in the schedule which is kept current on YCCC’s website (www.yccc. See YCCC page 4...
Pottery Business Gets Creative for Survival YORK When COVID-19 hit the area, Ocean Fire Pottery shut its doors like other local businesses. But when it was time to reopen, owner Amy Clark was leery about letting the public in again, because her business is actually in her home. When visitors walk in the door to the gallery, they are also walking into Clark’s studio, where she spends her days and nights making pottery. They could also turn to the right and step directly into her kitchen. In the middle of a pandemic. “Back in June, with all of the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, I just wasn’t comfortable bringing so many people

Clark pulled out a tent, a can of paint, and some tables, and created an open-air gallery in front of her house. Her handmade platters hang on the exterior walls of the house, and planters hang on hooks with flowers in them. She even brought her pottery wheel outside, so she can work out there and passers-by can see the pieces being made. “The feedback I’m getting is wonderful,” said Clark. And the

Swimmers Reminded to be Aware of Sharks
WELLS This week the Wells Police Department confirmed a sighting of a great white shark in Wells Harbor but that beaches will remain open with no restrictions. However, due to other reported sightings along the Maine coast, police are cautioning the public to not go into the water past knee-deep depth until fur-
ther notice. Town Manager Larissa Crockett added that lifeguards will do their best to keep people safe but that they have also been instructed not to attempt deep water rescues. Swimmers, surfers, and stand-up canoeist who wear black wetsuits are reminded that when they are in the water, they can resemble seals

Former Marshwood Student Skates 2,000 Miles for Native American Health Issues SOUTH BERWICK Jamie Purdy graduated from Marshwood High School in 1997. She is now Daisy Purdy, PHD and has decided to raise money to support the research of Dr. Tommy Rock about the effects of uranium mining on Native American lands, and the health issues this has caused the Native American people, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Daisy just completed roller skating from the Navajo Nation in Arizona to The Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina - 2000 miles! Her support for most of the way was just a driver in her car and she spent most nights in that car or a tent with the driver and her beloved dog, Mia Moo. This trip would have been demanding enough for anyone, but Daisy had the added
danger of exposure to COVID19 because she had a severe digestive ailment a couple years ago which left her with a seriously weakened immune system. Day after day Daisy skated
often in temperatures of over one hundred degrees and even more often with sore and blistered feet. Occasional falls also added to her aches and pains and left her body with bruises. To make matters worse on her journey, Daisy also suffered the heartbreak of her dog dying before she reached

VFW Post 9394 Managing Flags For Memorial Way KITTERY Have you noticed the U. S. Flags on the 35 utility poles along State Road (US Route 1) in Kittery between John Paul Jones Park and the Kittery Memorial Traffic Circle? These flags, which fly every year between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, first went up just before Memorial Day 2017 as a result of the efforts of the Flags for Memorial Way group, a team of dedicated individuals representing Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY), Kittery Town Council,

and Kittery residents. Kittery, being the Gateway to Maine, is in an ideal position to show that Maine, and Kittery in particular, honor all those individuals that gave all in service to our great country. In 2019, the Town of Kittery approached Kittery-Eliot Memorial Post Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9394, led by Commander Mel Bates, about managing the project going forward. The town was not able to assume the responsibilities of managing the project on an ongoing basis but wanted to ensure that the flags were flown along State Road every year. VFW Post 9394 graciously accepted the task of managing Flags for Memorial Way. Over the past two years, VFW Post 9394 has coordinated getting the flags up, and down, in a
timely manner with the volunteer efforts of crews of submarines undergoing modernization at PNSY and other citizens. Weather, poor mounting hardware quality, and vandalism over the past two years have presented financial challenges. Local businesses along State Road have been very supportive and kept VFW Post 9394 apprised of the status and condition of the flags and mounting hardware. When flags or mounting hardware require repair or replacement VFW Post 9394 arranges the repair or replacement and properly retires flags that are no longer serviceable. For further details, to make a donation, or volunteer time, in support of Flags for Memorial Way, call Mel Bates at 207-686-3162.

tage postcards in the museum archives to explore the changing landscape in this town in the 20th century. “The Kennebunks in Vintage Postcards,” published by Arcadia Publishing this month, features 183 postcards from the museum’s collection. Kennebunk’s proximity to three large bodies of water — the Kennebunk River, the Mousam River, and the Atlantic Ocean — fueled its development over thousands of years. Kennebunk’s waterways were home to Wabanaki hunters, settlement farmers, early lumber mills, and a booming shipbuilding business. The Maine coast soon brought tourists to Kennebunk and its beaches. By the 1930s, Kennebunk Beach and its surrounding area contained several hotels and beach cottages. Sites like the Wedding Cake House, Kennebunk Beach, Main Street, and Blowing Cave quickly reached new heights as well-known landmarks. Postcards played a part in fueling the powerhouse tourist industry that remains active to this day. With captions written by museum staff members Leanne Hayden and Cynthia Walker, with research assistance provided by museum volunteer Bruce Jackson, the book explores Kennebunk’s 20th century history with images from around town. Some are recognizable, while others are visions of past structures and landscapes that no longer exist. The book is dedicated to former Kennebunk Town See BOOK page 8...

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady I love your column, I always file it just in case I’ve a problem. Can I set up my Gmail account in MS Outlook, if so, how can I do this? Regards Ali Dear Ali, You can get your Gmail in any email program that supports IMAP. I get mine in Thunderbird, and it works great. In order to do this, you need to go to your Gmail settings and find a couple of things. To get started, click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of your Gmail window, then click on, “see all settings” in the menu. Across the top of the settings page, you will see a row of blue text with things like, Labels, Inbox, etc. Find the text that says, “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” and click on that. In the section labeled, “IMAP Access:” click to enable IMAP, then click the “Save Changes” button. From there, you will see a link to “Configuration Instructions” at the bottom. Follow the directions for your version

of Outlook and you should be all set. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Can you please tell me how to save a word document (Windows 10) to the desktop and to a USB memory stick. Just upgraded my operating system and am looking to find a way to do this. Thanks, Alicia Dear Alicia, Saving a Word document in Windows 10 shouldn’t be all that different than it was in previous versions of Windows. Let’s take a look. Open Microsoft Word and create your document. To save it on your desktop, follow these directions: 1. Click on the “File” tab in the upper-left corner. 2. Click on “Save” in the menu. 3. Click on “This PC” under Save As. 4. Click the up arrow at the top of the right column, next to the word “Documents”. 5. Click on “Desktop” in the right column. 6. Type a name for your document in the box that says, “Enter file name here”. 7. Click the “Save button. To save a copy of the document on the USB memory stick, follow these directions: 1. Click on the “File” tab in the upper-left corner. 2. Click on “Save As” in the menu. 3. Click on “This PC” under Save As. 4. Click the up arrow at the top of the right column, until it says, “This PC”. 5. Double-Click on “your USB drive” in the right column. 6. Click the “Save button. Now, close your Word document and you will have a copy on your desktop and your USB drive. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have learned much from you over the years and I really appreciate you. A few years ago I received an iPod and bought lots of music on iTunes now the iPod is broken and I do not want to spend 100 bucks or more to see if they can fix it. I would like to put the music on to my mp3 player only to find out I cannot. Can you give me any clues on how to get my music? Thank you, Diana

Dear Diana, Since you purchased the music on iTunes, the songs will always be available on your iTunes account. If you want to put them on another apple device, just sign into your apple account (same as your iTunes account) on that device and you will be able to download the music. If you want to put them on a device that is not an apple product (like your MP3 player) you should be able to install iTunes on your computer, access the music and then convert it to an MP3. If your version of iTunes doesn’t have the option to convert the files, a free program like Audacity will be able to do the job for you. You can find it at www.audacityteam.org. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My Facebook has been hacked. My name but another picture And posts that are not mine. Help! Thank you, Sharon Dear Sharon, Cyber criminals don’t have to hack into your Facebook account in order to create an account almost identical to yours. Then, they can pretend to be you, and try to get your friends and family to accept them as friends, then they will pretend to be you and try to scam your friends and family. If you can still log into
your Facebook account and make posts, then it is not your account that has been hacked and you don’t need to do anything with your account. Instead, if you are sure the Facebook account with your name is someone trying to spoof your account (instead of someone else with the same name as you) you can simply report the
WS
account to Facebook and they will quickly take the account down. Just go to Facebook and search for “Report an Impostor Account”. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? ...LIBRARY from page 5 Kelly has been active in bringing many speakers and other live programs to the library. Last year, the library association board and Town Manager Steve Eldridge began talks to make the library sustainable by becoming a town department. In November, 2019, voters approved the Select Board entering into a “Memorandum of Understanding” agreement with the Berwick Library Association. During town meeting elec-
tion July 14, voters approved the new library budget. Under the MOU, the operating budget will be the responsibility of the town, and the Berwick Library Association will retain ownership of the building and grounds and will be responsible for building maintenance. Kelly has announced the library will now be open 38 hours per week, although only curbside service will be offered for now because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She anticipates opening to the public in early August, as long as

...POTTERY from page 1 craft shows, and those have all been canceled. So she has a lot of ground to make up with this format. “It’s been a dry summer, which has been good for outdoor business. I’m so grateful for that, and for this amazing, supportive community,” she says. The crisis has inspired creative partnerships with local artists and businesses dealing with COVID-19 fallout. An
active member of Yoga on York, Clark was eager to help when the studio had to stop holding in-person classes, and offered to host some in her back yard, behind the shop. The classes have been popular, and continue even after the yoga studio opened again. People stop by the open-air gallery after class, and Clark spreads the word and gives out yoga schedules to other customers. One yoga practitioner’s father-in-law is now making signs that are sold at the shop. Hanging planters adorning the space (and for sale) are a collaboration with a neighbor who does macrame. Soon, local artists also knocked out of the craft-fair circuit will be taking turns selling their wares at the space Clark has created. Clark plans to keep the
open-air gallery going well into the fall, until the weather finally drives her inside. Being indoors during the holiday season won’t be ideal for business, and she anticipates a slower winter because of that. Her biggest sale of the year, the Holiday Extravaganza held in her studio, is up in the air. Meanwhile, she’ll keep connecting with customers and partners however she can. “It’s been challenging navigating the pandemic, but I’ve been lucky so far. We’ve all had to approach business in a new way, and I hope to bring some of the lessons I’ve learned and that spirit of ingenuity into the future.” Ocean Fire Pottery is located at 23 Woodbridge Road in York. WELLS When volunteer Marsha entered the kitty room at Cattail farmhouse, she did a double take. Behind the door, lying in a cardboard box placed on its side, was Miso, the mother of four 10-week-old kittens. But now, she had a second litter of newborns, nursing at her side! Her entire belly was covered with little orange and buff and black little babies all happily enjoying their breakfast. Marsha was shocked, and sounded the call. “Babies! We have babies! Miso is a feral momma who calls the shots like a boss, and generally keeps us in our place. So we’ve been very careful with her new litter. Basically, Miso is in charge, and she’s doing just great. the progress we have made to reduce overall tobacco use,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This investment is an important step forward to increase tobacco use prevention and awareness efforts throughout our state.” Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. According to the most recent data, youth e-cigarette usage has almost doubled since 2017, with an alarming 28.7% of Maine high school students currently using ecigarettes. Among high school youth in Maine, more than seven percent of individuals reported smoking conventional cigarettes. This funding, awarded through OSH’s National and State Tobacco Control Program, aims to prevent the initiation of commercial tobacco use among youth, eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke, promote quitting among adult and youth, and identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities.

Health & Fitness American Cancer Society Honors Wells Resident WELLS The American Cancer Society recently presented a Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award to Timothy LaPointe, a Wells resident. The award is the most honored accolade by the Society in New England, and it recognizes LaPointe’s remarkable accomplishments in support of the society’s mission to celebrate lives, to save lives and to lead the fight for a world without cancer. LaPoint got involved with Relay For Life of York County eight years ago after his wife, Cathy, was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. He has been a Relay For Life participant, Team Captain, Event Leadership Team member, and Event Lead. Additionally, he has volunteered at other events and fundraisers including the Sea Dogs Mother’s Day 5k, Portland on Tap, and Street, Eats & Beats, among others. Society staff said LaPointe constantly pushes himself to develop new skills and he is always open to new ideas to better the event and get more people involved. Even though he had no sales background, LaPointe studied others to partake in a “recruitment blitz” to solicit donations, create new teams, and secure corporate sponsors. Once he began sharing his wife’s cancer journey and why he was involved with the cause, LaPointe began securing numerous raffle items and donations, staff said. On another occasion, he embraced making a video for a Facebook kickoff campaign despite not having gone through the process previously. Plus, on the Relay For Life walk day, LaPointe is the first one to start setting up to taking out the last load after breakdown, including helping teams set up their camp sites and acting as master of ceremonies when needed. He works to make sure the event is a meaningful event for everyone, especially cancer survivors, staff say. “Tim is tireless; he is a constant, steady, reliable, leader making sure things happen as they should, raising others up and putting them before himself,” said Reven Oliver, community development manager with the American Cancer Society.
“His passion for the cause is infectious. You want to do more, not because he expects it or even wants it, you do it because he believes in you. This is how
he motivates others. Working with Tim is more than inspir-
ing, it is energizing.” The Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award is named in honor of the late Sandra C. Labaree, a longtime
American Cancer Society volunteer from Maine. For more information, visit www. cancer.org or call 800-2272345.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Grant Program for Businesses Impacted By COVID-19
STATEWIDE More COVID-19 financial relief is available for certain small business owners in Maine in the form of a new Micro-Enterprise Business Grant Program. Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC), the nonprofit that leads planning and economic development for 39 member towns in Southern Maine, will administer the program for the southern Maine region. According to Chuck Morgan, SMPDC Economic Devel-
opment Director, the COVID19 relief package of $2 million is allocated from $11 million Maine received from the federal CARES Act for its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Says Morgan, “This is an excellent opportunity for small business owners who fall within lower income levels to apply for a forgivable loan up to $5k. We are urging businesses to check this out immediately as applications are now being reviewed and the funds will be awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.”
Supporting small businesses in York for 20 years. NATIONWIDE IS #1 IN SMALL BUSINESS INSURANCE
Businesses may use the forgivable loan funds for working capital, which includes fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that can’t be paid due to the disaster’s impact. To apply, business owners should visit www.mainesbdc.org/cdbg. A Maine Small Business Development Center advisor will determine eligibility and work with business owners to submit an application. The Maine Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) in partnership with the Maine Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) will provide grants of up to $5,000 for businesses with five or fewer employees, with an owner whose income is in the low to moderate range as defined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Businesses must demonstrate revenue loss as a direct consequence of COVID-19. Funds cannot duplicate those received from other federal, state, or local programs (including other CDBG programs).
These funds are made possible as part of the $11 million Maine received from the federal CARES Act for its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The funds for the program are being distributed through Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC), Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments (AVCOG), Coastal Enterprises, Inc. (CEI), and Northern Maine Development Commission (NMDC). Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

...JELLIES from page 1 The York Beach Fire Department recently posted a warning about jelly fish interactions on Facebook. The sting of the lion’s mane is not fatal to most people, but “the effects can be felt throughout the body. Pins and needles with pain ranging from soreness in the feet to the whole body, and a rash. These effects can last two weeks or longer. If an allergic reaction occurs, it can be life threatening, and may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or mouth, and hives.” Immediate medical attention will then be necessary. The minor stings should react well to a vinegar rinse or baking soda paste. If you would like to report a jelly fish sighting to the project, visit https://report.bigelow. org/. To view the population forecast, visit https://eco.bigelow.org/jellycast/. For interesting information about jelly fish, you can also go to the website of www.oceanconservancy.org. This article uses part of “Large Jellyfish Stoke Curiosity and Science” published by the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences on November 7, 2019.
