brating community conservation with local farmers and fishermen in partnership with When Pigs Fly restaurant and guest chefs. The evening’s exciting conclusion will be a raffle ticket drawing for one lucky winner to take home a fourth work of art, an original oil painting of the York River by artist Tom Glover, which is on display at the York (Hannaford Dr.) office of Kennebunk Savings. Although, it was no easy task for the traditional painters to turn into creators of threedimensional artwork, Palmer, Volpe and Walek were all eager to give it a try for this worthy cause. All three chairs, as well as Tom Glover’s oil painting, will be on display throughout the month of August at four York businesses, who are among the event’s sponsors. Christopher Volpe often paints en plein air so he is no stranger to braving the elements for his craft. Rather than a specific scene, Volpe drew inspiration from a familiar palette that he had previously used to conjure imagery commemorating Celia Thaxter’s famous gardens. Volpe engagingly documented his process in his blog www. christophervolpe.blogspot.com – “Chair-man for a Day”. For an artist of nature like Volpe, “It’s

good to know I’m doing something to help keep coastal southern Maine the beautiful place that it is.” To view Christopher Volpe’s colorful burst of abstraction, please visit the York branch of Bangor Savings Bank. Christopher Volpe moved to New England from Long Island, New York to earn a graduate degree in poetry at the University of New Hampshire. He worked for about 15 years as a professional writer and taught college English and poetry before falling in love with American landscape painting while teaching a class in art history. Drawing upon the New England landscape, his work has roots in 19th century traditions such as Barbizon and Tonalism yet extends to abstraction through a contemporary 20th/21st century sensibility. Painting in his studio nestled in the woods across from Chase’s Pond in York, Michael Walek worked from mental snapshots to recreate a sense of the rhythm of light and color filtering through overhanging branches in his fanciful woodland scene of a mystical forest inspired by the deep Maine woods.
