brating community conservation with local farmers and fishermen in partnership with When Pigs Fly restaurant and guest chefs. The evening’s exciting conclusion will be a raffle ticket drawing for one lucky winner to take home a fourth work of art, an original oil painting of the York River by artist Tom Glover, which is on display at the York (Hannaford Dr.) office of Kennebunk Savings. Although, it was no easy task for the traditional painters to turn into creators of threedimensional artwork, Palmer, Volpe and Walek were all eager to give it a try for this worthy cause. All three chairs, as well as Tom Glover’s oil painting, will be on display throughout the month of August at four York businesses, who are among the event’s sponsors. Christopher Volpe often paints en plein air so he is no stranger to braving the elements for his craft. Rather than a specific scene, Volpe drew inspiration from a familiar palette that he had previously used to conjure imagery commemorating Celia Thaxter’s famous gardens. Volpe engagingly documented his process in his blog www. christophervolpe.blogspot.com – “Chair-man for a Day”. For an artist of nature like Volpe, “It’s

good to know I’m doing something to help keep coastal southern Maine the beautiful place that it is.” To view Christopher Volpe’s colorful burst of abstraction, please visit the York branch of Bangor Savings Bank. Christopher Volpe moved to New England from Long Island, New York to earn a graduate degree in poetry at the University of New Hampshire. He worked for about 15 years as a professional writer and taught college English and poetry before falling in love with American landscape painting while teaching a class in art history. Drawing upon the New England landscape, his work has roots in 19th century traditions such as Barbizon and Tonalism yet extends to abstraction through a contemporary 20th/21st century sensibility. Painting in his studio nestled in the woods across from Chase’s Pond in York, Michael Walek worked from mental snapshots to recreate a sense of the rhythm of light and color filtering through overhanging branches in his fanciful woodland scene of a mystical forest inspired by the deep Maine woods.

world around you – a place not that different from many settings in York. The composition is filled with nods to land, sea, sky and rural gardens, but is created from imagination. For Palmer, color was key. “I wanted it to be bright enough to be eye catching,” he explained regarding his brighter than usual color choices. Against a blue backdrop that served as the sea and sky he painted ethereal clouds, and a quaint village scene to imbue the chair with a fun, whimsical quality, while remaining true to the multi-dimensional aspect typical of his recent work. Readers can visit Kittery Trading Post to view Palmer’s striking depiction of people living in harmony with the landscape.

Michael Palmer has lived and worked in Key West for most of the last two decades and also spends time in Maine. Having painted professionally for 42 years, his work is well collected both here and abroad. He has exhibited in many museum shows, art centers and fine galleries throughout the United States and Canada and his paintings are part of several museums’ permanent collections. Collectors and critics alike have given his art much praise and serious attention. Many of Palmer’s works have an abstract quality that makes them intriguing. He depicts rooftops, narrow streets, bird’s eye views of cityscapes or people going about their everyday business with an unmistakable architectural approach. Over time, his emphasis has been put more on form and design and less on content and narrative. The architectural pieces are wonderful studies in perspective, shadow effects, horizontal and vertical lines and broken geometrical shapes, always in a deliberately subtle color palette. For a chance to meet the artists in person and acquire one of these splendid originals for your collection, you must attend the event. K-laser therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.
Kittery, ME — The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined: 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require? The treatment that is provided at our office has three main goals:

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Kittery that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (See the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article.)
1) Increase blood flow 2) Stimulate small fiber nerves 3) Decrease brain based pain The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes the world renown K-Laser. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow.

cyclists gathered at Lynnfield High School, MA in July for the 2014 Reid’s Ride, and raised $165,000 for the fight against adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer. The 110 mile ride finished at Kennebunk Beach (KBIA) and was the largest Reid’s Ride ever in its successful ten-year history of raising funds for cancer patients and their families. Funds from the Ride support improved patient and survivor care, improved access for AYA cancer patients to new clinical trials, and the education of medical professionals about the unique challenges of the cancers predominantly striking adolescents and young adults. Festivities at the ocean-side Park included a barbeque brunch, refreshments, live music, raffles and prizes, and testimonials from several patients and programs wishing to express their gratitude to supporters with stories of how the Reid’s Ride has helped alter the course of AYA cancer care over the last 10 years. “I couldn’t be more
pleased with the outcome of this 10th anniversary Reid’s Ride,” said Lorraine Sacco, Director of Reid’s Ride. “The energy all along the route, particularly at Stage Fort Park, was phenomenal and so reflective of the power that Reid’s Ride is wielding in the fight to help AYA patients beat their cancers and help them carry on with See BIKE page 10...

~ News ~ Antique Car Show: “Woodies in the Cove” WELLS The Third Annual “Woodies in the Cove” Car Show sponsored by the Wells and Ogunquit Historical Society will be held on
August 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will take place on the large field between Perkins Cove Candies and McDonald’s on Route One in Wells. The show
will feature antique woodies and vintage cars. Trophies will be awarded. For more information, contact Sonny Perkins at 281-4557779 or HSWO at 207-646-4775.
friends and family gathered for the celebration. The connection to Maine is one of emotion, celebration, and progress. Reid Sacco, for whom Reid’s Ride and the Reid Sacco AYA Caner Alliance is named, spent summers as a child and teen learning and teaching sailing on the Kennebunk waterfront. Memories of him during those happiest of times remain dear for family and friends. But more recently, Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute in Portland stepped up to the plate in a collaboration with the Reid R. Sacco AYA Cancer Clinic & Program at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, directed by Susan Parsons, MD. As in integral part of this collaboration, a scholarship program was launched to help
educate young health care professionals about AYA cancer. Made possible by funds raised by Reid’s Ride, two second-year medical students will spend this summer as the inaugural Reid R Sacco AYA Cancer Summer Scholars. For many of those who participate in Reid’s Ride each year, the event is bittersweet. Reid’s Ride has made possible some remarkable progress in the fight against AYA cancers. But all of it is inspired by a young man who lost his own personal battle with AYA cancer. On this past July 24th, Reid would have been thirty years of age, and many of his family and friend reflected on the success of the Ride, on how sorely he is missed, and on what the world is missing by his absence.

full and healthy lives.” Although Reid’s Ride has been a 28-mile event for ten years, each year about a quarter of the riders extend their ride after the Stage Fort Park festivities and pedal back to Lynnfield High School or to home. This year, a small team of riders took that ambitious undertaking to new lengths. Once the morning activities were concluded and all the materials, tents, and decorations were packed up at Stage Fort Park, a group of eight riders then set out to the northeast for a route that would take them through New Hampshire and to a finish in Kennebunk, Maine. The journey totaled 110 miles, meant to symbolize this being the tenth anniversary of Reid’s Ride. Blessed with beautiful weather, and the generous hospitality of family and friends, the eight reached Rye Beach, NH by late Sunday afternoon, where they stayed the night. The intrepid cyclists rolled onto the grounds of the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association (KBIA) children’s summer program early Monday afternoon, to a warm reception from

Customers of Central Maine Power Co., a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, continue to receive calls from scam artists claiming to represent the utility and demanding immediate payments. The good news: Customers are heeding CMP’s warnings about the scams, and very few are taking the bait. “While these scammers keep trying to get our customers to depart with some of their hard-earned money, very few people are falling for it. The word is out, and people know it’s a scam,” said CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “This should serve as a message to these scam artists that they should stop wasting their time trying to defraud our customers.” Scammers have typically called business customers — often restaurants and markets just prior to their lunch or dinner rush periods — but they’ve also targeted residential customers. Some customers reported receiving multiple calls in the same day. Most are warned of imminent disconnection, instructed to purchase a pre-paid debit card at a local convenience store, and told to call a specific number with the card information. In some cases, the perpetrators told customers they hadn’t received a recent payment or they had incorrectly processed a payment, and the customer had to pay again. Rice added that some scammers have become increasingly creative in their efforts. “Many of them use devices that spoof caller ID systems so the call looks like it’s coming from CMP,” she said. “Some of them even try to sweeten the deal with an offer of discounted service for the rest of the year. Fortunately, customers have taken notice of our prior warnings and know these calls are all scams.” CMP warns customers to verify all information before making such payments, and offers these tips to keep their account information secure: CMP will not call a customer for payment if his or her account is in good standing. CMP does not ask customers to purchase debit cards such as Green Dot MoneyPaks to make payments. Any instruction involving such a payment scheme should be considered a red flag. Customers can check their balance at CMP’s website at www.cmpco.com or by calling 1-800-750-4000 (residential customers) or 1-800-565-3181 (business customers). Customers who need to make an urgent payment should do so only through the CMP website, or at one of the payment

‘Marvelous Wonderettes’… A Marvelous Way To End Summer
By Scott Andrews, Staff Columnist ARUNDEL Summer theater is traditionally dominated by fluffy, funny, tuneful musical fare. That’s exactly what’s in store for audiences at Arundel Barn Playhouse as the company wraps up its 2014 season with “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” a melodic and nostalgic stroll down memory lane. I loved this very tuneful, joyfully retrospective show. “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a marvelous way to end the summer theater season on just the right note. “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is an exemplar of the “jukebox musical,” a stage show where a selection of unrelated pop songs that were originally written and performed by various disparate artists are assembled around a minimal story line, thinly drawn characters and a few other unifying features. Roger Bean, a West Coast director and theatrical impresario, wrote the script. He has penned numerous others, but this is by far his most popular. Bean’s unifying aesthetic is the female artists and girl groups of the 1950s and 1960s. It was a period when solo singers Connie
Francis and Brenda Lee attained peaks of popularity. Ditto an assortment of all-female close-harmony vocal ensembles such as the Chordettes, Marvelettes, Shirelles and Crystals. Some of these groups formed in high school and scored their biggest hits before they reached their twenties. That’s the story of “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” four teenagers who won a high school competition. The setting is the 1958 Springfield High School senior prom, and Bean’s young ladies are performing at the big dance. Cindy Lou (Kate Turner) is the most popular with the boys. She knows it – and acts accordingly. Betty Jean (Lexi Duffy) is her rival in romance and tends to act out. Missy (Rachel Grindle) is awkward and geeky, while Suzy (Danae DeShazer) is the archetypal dumb blonde, complete with bubble gum. The second act is the Springfield High School class reunion 10 years later. The tone is more somber, and the women, now in their late twenties, have logged some experience in life, including unfaithful boyfriends and philandering husbands. See REVIEW page 32...

Sondance Academy to Hold Open House August 26 WELLS “We are bringing dance here and around the world.” Entering its fifth year, SonDance Academy in Wells is excited to once again bring beautiful and wholesome dance to the Wells area. “Our commitment is to affordable classes where people of all ages grow in confidence and grace, said Rosemary Moore, SonDance Director. “Kids sit in front of their computers when school is out. Sondance gives them a safe and fun place to be after school and at the same time learn etiquette and respect.” For the past two years, SonDance competition teams
have won the Spirit Award at national dance competitions; this recognizes the studio whose students most embody respect and the joy and love of dance. Sondance students learn to reach out to others as they travel to area nursing homes, churches and soup kitchens spreading joy and beauty through dance. One student even took dance to Bosnia this year through a mission organization. “All of our teachers are expert professionals in the various dance disciplines and modesty in both costumes and movements allows the truest form of the dance to be seen.” Sondance is non-profit and
“Art Videos at the Gallery” Series Continues OGUNQUIT On August 27, at 7:30 p.m. enjoy a showing of the film ‘The Mystery of Henry Darger’ at the Barn Gallery, Shore Road and Bourne Lane in Ogunquit. Admission is free and there is plenty of free parking. Henry Joseph Darger (April 12, 1892 - April 13, 1973) was a writer who kept to himself and worked as a custodian in Chicago. He was not known as an artist until after his death when his art work was discovered among his possessions. He was possibly born in Brazil or Germany and lived with his father, who was a tailor and known as a kind man, until 1900 when his crippled father had to be taken to live in the Catholic Mission. At this time, the young Darger was placed in a Catholic boy’s home. His father died in 1905 and his son was placed in an institution for the feebleminded. After several attempts, he finally managed to escape in 1908 and found employment in a Catholic hospital and in this way supported himself for the next 50 years. He went to Mass daily, sometimes 5 times in a day and

dressed shabbily and rarely interacted with other people. In 1930 he found a room on the second floor of Chicago’s north side. Were he living today, he could be the subject of one of the “Buried Alive” type TV programs as it seems that he saved every piece of trash and junk he came upon. After his death in 1973 his landlord, the photographer Nathan Lerner, was cleaning out the debris from his apartment finding hundreds of Pepto-Bismol bottles, a thousand balls of string, newspaSee VIDEO page 34...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ “The Trip to Bountiful” Opens At Hackmatack BERWICK The Trip to Bountiful” opens this week at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. This heartwarming story set in the 1940’s is of an elderly woman (Carrie Watts) who desires to visit the town where she grew up but is stopped by her meddling daughter-in-law and overprotective son. Determined, Carrie makes the trip and finds new friends along the road, but discovers that the town she once knew, is no more. An NBC TV play in 1953, on Broadway that same year, a movie in 1985, revived with Tony awards on Broadway last year, playing in Los Angeles next month, and then Boston in November, you can catch “The Trip to Bountiful” now at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. The part of Carrie Watts is being played by Sharon Hilton, a name synonymous with the Hackmatack, having been involved with the playhouse since it’s inception in 1972. Avoid Expensive Errors When Paying for College It’s just about Back-to-School time again. If you have young children, you might be hustling them to the store for backpacks and binders. But if you fast-forward a few years, you can envision driving your kids a little farther — to their college dorms. And when that day comes, you’ll want to be financially prepared. So you’ll want to avoid making costly mistakes when preparing for, and paying, those big bills. Here are some of the most common of these errors: Not saving enough Only half of all families with children under 18 save any money for college, according to a recent study by Sallie Mae, the country’s largest originator of federally in-
sured student loans. You might find it easier to save for college if you automatically move a set amount each month from your checking or savings account to a college savings vehicle.
such as contribution limits and tax treatments, but both allow you to invest for growth potential. As with any investment account, there are risks involved, including market risk.
Not considering vehicles with growth potential The same Sallie Mae study found that more parents use a general savings account than any other method of saving for college. But since most savings accounts these days pay only a minimal rate of return, you will have trouble getting the growth potential you need to achieve your college savings goals. Consider working toward your college savings goals by investing in a vehicle specifically designed for college, such as a 529 plan or a Coverdell plan. There are differences between these plans,
Stopping your savings once your children are in college Unless your children plan to take an awful lot of credits, they’re not going to finish college in just one year. Consequently, you’ll want to keep investing in your plan or other college savings vehicle while your children are in school. Taking out 401(k) loans Your employer may allow you to take out a loan against your 401(k) to help pay for college. But this may not be a good idea for two reasons: First, when you remove money from your 401(k) — even if you plan on eventually paying it back — you will slow the potential accumulation in your account, thereby depriving yourself of resources you will eventually need for
retirement. Second, should you leave the company, you might have to repay the loan within a limited number of days. Not using available tax credits Depending on your income, you might qualify for the American Opportunity tax credit, which is worth up to $2,500, provided you spend at least $4,000 on college expenses. Check with your tax professional to see if you qualify for this credit and how to most effectively incorporate it. And be careful you don’t waste the credit, because you may not be able to use it and your plan dis-

chains and Internet shopping channels, a grass roots movement is now underway across North America to raise awareness of small businesses while celebrating community and regional uniqueness, often with locallysourced or locally-made products. So, as the marketing partner to local advertisers, it’s only natural that print and digital publications would carry the “shop local” banner for their communities. Here are just a few of the long-known benefits of what shopping local can mean to a community: • More of the money spent locally stays local. According to the Retail Merchants Association, 45¢ out of every dollar gets reinvested in the local community.* • Shopping locally creates jobs. Small businesses are the number one employer in North America, so every job created is a plus for a community. • Shopping locally helps keep taxes lower. The more people working and more businesses in a community to form a tax base, the better financially situated a community will be. Owners and employees live in the area, so their paychecks are also being spent in the community. • Community uniqueness is enhanced. Shopping locally can display what is special about a community. • Shopping locally generally provides a more personalized shopping experience. Customer service is the hallSee LOCAL page 19...

BUSINESS & FINANCE Back-to-School Savings
Back-to-school spending can take its toll on the family budget, with parents paying considerable cash for clothes, backpacks and other must-haves. The National Retail Foundation expects consumers to spend about $74.9 billion this year to send their children and college students back to school, up 12 percent since 2013. “Back-to-school spending is second only to the holidays, and the outlay is higher and higher each year, said Mike Sullivan, director of education for Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “Retailers push hard in the summer months, and school budget cuts have shifted the cost of supplies to families, but savvy parents can save money without skimping on necessities. Sullivan offers eight tips for cutting costs on back-toschool shopping: Take stock: Supply lists often call for scissors, rulers, pencils and other items people already have at home. Parents can save money by taking stock of what they have before buying new supplies. Stick to the list: Teachers’ supply lists have become more extensive – and expensive – so parents are wise to stick to the list and avoid impulse purchases. Comparison shop: Dollar stores, big-box retailers and office supply
stores offer deep discounts on many school essentials. Parents can save money by seeking out the best prices and stocking up on items children use throughout the year.
Shop tax-free: Many states offer tax-free shopping days during back-toschool seasons. Find out if your state is participating, and buy your big-ticket items then.
Clip coupons: Many websites publish coupons on back-to-school clothing and supplies. Parents also can find their children’s favorite brands on Facebook and Twitter for special coupons available only to followers.
Include kids in the process: Many parents give their kids a budget for clothing and necessities. Kids who have to choose between blowing the budget on pricey items or stretching their dollars with sensible purchases will learn a powerful lesson about the value of money. For more financial tips, visit takechargeamerica.org.
Wait to buy: Just like holiday shopping, retailers often discount prices after the rush. Parents can purchase some items after Labor Day to reap savings. Shop or swap second-hand: Clothing swaps are a popular choice to exchange gently used clothing. Additionally, second-hand retail shops, Craigslist and eBay are good options for finding trendy and brand-name gear at a fraction of the cost.

WEST KENNEBUNK – Melanie Meet Melanie, a 10-year old Pit Bull Mix. Melanie came to the Animal Welfare Society after her owner passed away. She is a laid back, sweet girl who would like a mellow home with lots of squeaky toys. She has lived with other dogs but we don’t know if she’s ever lived with cats. She would be happy to share a new home with respectful children. If you’ve been looking for a total sweetheart of a dog, then Melanie is your girl! A “staff pick” favorite, she loves people and would love to be your companion. Stop on by the shelter today to meet this loving, fun, darling dog. Crayola Meet Crayola, an 8-year old short-haired cat. Crayola is FiV+, meaning he has the feline equivalent of HiV+. Because of this, he can’t share a home with other cats unless they are also positive. There is no cure or treatment for Crayola, it is just a condition his new owners should be aware of. Crayola is quite friendly, but not “in your face” about it. When not napping, a favorite activity of most any cat, he’ll happily seek out attention from visitors. Crayola would make a great companion for relaxing alongside after a long day. If you’d like to add some color to your home, stop on by the shelter today to meet Crayola. Priscilla Meet Priscilla, a 2-year old Chinchilla. For those unaware,

Chinchillas are a unique breed of rodent. They have incredibly soft fur which needs to be cleaned regularly using a special dust. Health & Fitness Healthy Eating Tips for College Students The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association encourage college students to maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle. Heading back to school and dreading the all-you-caneat cafeteria? First year and fearing the “Freshman 15”? Staying healthy in college is more than just fitting into your skinny jeans—it can seriously help you later on in life. Why care now, you ask? The American Heart Association says “Life is Why.” Here’s a lesson you don’t want to forget: nearly 68 percent of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, and obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but eat your fruits and veggies. Mom and Dad were on to something when they taught you to eat an apple a day. The American Heart Association recommends filling half your plate with fruits and/or vegetables at every meal. Fruits and vegetables are low-calorie, nutrient-rich foods that keep you satisfied and may help you maintain weight, cholesterol and blood pressure. Stay hydrated my friends. Water is the best way to stay hydrated. Reach for water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages like soda and sports drinks, which add extra calories with little nutritional value. Plain water too boring? Try sparkling water or add fruit wedges to jazz it up. Put down the double bacon cheeseburger. It sounds like a delicious option after that all-nighter you pulled, but your heart won’t be happy with you. Instead, reach for a grilled turkey burger piled high with veggies like avocado, tomato, onions and lettuce. In other words, choose lean cuts of meat and poultry without skin and extra fat re-

MEDICAL CENTER WALK-INS
WELCOME!
KITTERY The American Cancer Society will host a ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ kickoff rally and informational meeting at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, at The Kittery Trading Post, Katahdin Room to share details about its upcoming community walk. Now is the time to get involved in the Kittery walk, slated for Sunday, October 5, and to learn more about Making Strides and how to help finish the fight against breast cancer. To participate in the kickoff call Jessica Laliberte at 207-3733719 or email jessica.laliberte@ cancer.org. Since 1993, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has been the American Cancer Society’s rallying cry to build awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. In that time, 10 million walkers have collected more than $594 million and last year, 171 walkers in Kittery raised $51,000! Making Strides Against Breast Cancer funds make a difference by: Helping people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early when it is most treatable; Investing in groundbreak-
ing cancer research to find, prevent, treat, and cure the disease; Providing free information and services to help people facing breast cancer today when and where they need it including transportation, lodging, wigs, support programs, financial assistance, and more; Ensuring access to mammograms for women who need them “The fight to end breast cancer starts with a single step and Making Strides gives us power to make a real difference in the battle to end breast cancer,” said Jessica Laliberte, ACS staff partner. “Not only are we helping those who are currently fighting the disease, we’re helping everyone who hopes to never hear the words ‘you have breast cancer’.” This year, Kittery residents will unite with the American Cancer Society in their fight against breast cancer during the 2014 annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, at The Tanger Outlets. For additional details visit www.makingstrideswalk.org/ kitteryme.

...EATING from page 21 it’s sometimes hard to find healthy options. So when you need a bite, stuff your face with fresh fruits and veggies, unsalted nuts and seeds, and low-fat whole-grain crackers. Strike a (yoga) pose. Put down the cupcake and fight your stress without food. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try yoga, take a walk, go to the gym or call friends or family. Remember, you’re allowed to take breaks from studying in order to recharge. We like to move it, move it. Cue the dance music, lace up those running shoes or grab a Frisbee. No matter how you like to move it (move it!), maintaining weight is about burning the same amount of calories as you consume. De-
veloping a regular exercise routine (at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) is the best way to burn additional calories and manage stress. Take your phone out. No, not to tweet. To check your portions. One of the easiest pitfalls for college students is all-youcan- eat cafeterias. Portion control can help you keep track of the foods you are consuming without going overboard. For instance, a serving of chicken breast (3 ounces) is about the size of a smart phone and a medium banana is about the size of a pencil. For more portion comparisons, check out www.heart.org/ PortionDistortion. Looking for more tips? Visit www.heart.org/ GettingHealthy.

Brick Store Museum Releases New Heritage Ornament
KENNEBUNK – To celebrate the rich heritage of the Kennebunks, the Brick Store Museum began a tradition five years ago in creating a unique ornament each year focusing on the different histories of the Kennebunk area. Each ornament since 2010 has been created by ChemArt, a company that creates beautiful Christmas ornaments, including the annual White House ornament for the White House Historical Society in Washington, DC. This year, the Museum featured one of its own. Previous years featured themes such as the historic district, our shipbuilding
history, and local beaches. The ornament for 2014 is an ornate rocking horse, modeled as a miniature to one now found in the Museum’s collection. William Barry, a well-known 19th Century Kennebunk architect, owned the real-life leather rocking horse in the 1860s. ChemArt’s re-creation of the child’s toy brings the
horse to life through 24-karat gold plated brass. With only 250 of the rocking horse handassembled, this limited edition is bound to be popular! The Heritage Ornament is $21.95, and can now be purchased online (via www.brickstoremuseum. org) or at the Museum’s shop at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk. Previous year ornaments can also be purchased, except for 2010’s Historic District ornament, which has since sold out. The Brick Store Museum is located at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk’s historic district. Its galleries and research archives are open to the public
sion: $7.50 adults, $6 seniors, $3 children (6-16), $20 family. Visit www.brickstoremuseum.org or call 207-985-4802 for further information.

~ News ~
...REVIEW from page 16 The music recycles about two dozen hit tunes, including the Chordettes’ two biggest: “Mr. Sandman” and “Lollipop.” Others
fondly recall an assortment of different girl groups and female artists. Among the most memorable songs are “Lipstick On Your Collar” and “It’s My Party (And I’ll Cry If I Want To).” “The Marvelous Wonder-
ettes” is a perfect vehicle for young actresses to strut their stuff, and Arundel Barn Playhouse has hired a fine cast of up-and-coming professionals – primarily students and recent graduates of musical theater programs in colleges and conserva-
tories. Arundel’s four very appealing young ladies boast fine voices and excellent stage presences. Costume designer Emma Ford adorns her four characters in the fashions of the two decades depicted in the show, exemplified
by brilliant crinoline skirts in the first act and calf-high white leather boots in the second. The format is show-withinshow, and director Ed Reichert maintains much-needed constant visual action.

Now in its third year and funded by a grant from the Nellie Mae Foundation, over 60 students from the Sanford School District participated in the one-week programs held on the Wells campus this summer. While on campus, students learned about YCCC and its programs such as Culinary Arts, Graphic Design and Criminal Justice through workshops led by YCCC staff, faculty and the Wells Police Department. Participants also attended seminars about college, career readiness, entrepreneurship and valuing differences. Participants who already have post-secondary goals came away with invaluable information about how to use their high school experiences to move

them toward their goals. They now know about the types of post-secondary training that are available and ways to access and pay for them. Along the way, many participants were exposed to career fields they didn’t even know existed and their aspirations broaden or shifted. For those students who really did not yet have any specific postsecondary goals yet this was an opportunity for them to see what the future could hold for them. “For most of the students it was a game-changing week.” said Kathy Birch, of the Sanford School District “Students who may not have been engaged in their school work began to see the point of what they are doing in school. They made connections between the classroom and the workforce. They began to discover the ‘why’ in ‘why do I need to learn this?’ They started thinking about their high school courses differently and, in short, made a big step forward in owning their learning.” Working with YCCC’s business and industry partners students took daily tours of a few of the counties employers such as Hussey Seating, Wasco Skylights, Volk Packaging Corporation, Pratt & Whitney, Nonantum Resort, When Pigs Fly & Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. “This program would not ...VIDEO from page 34 pers, magazines, comic books, religious items, and much more. be a success without our business and industry partners willing to open their doors to these students and we are so thankful for that.” said Paulette Millette, YCCC’s Director of Community & Business Programs Community Programs. “I believe the students learn so much when they see for themselves what job opportunities are available to them in York County.” Here’s what some of the student participants had to say about their experience: “This week was so much fun. I was mad at my mother for making me come, but I am so glad I did.” said Sanford 10th grader Madison Edmunds “I learned that there are lots of things to experience out there and you don’t have to stick with just one thing.” Sanford 10th grader Cole Horne said “I learned that everyone has a different style of learning and in order to be successful in business and life you have to embrace that.” YCCC, established in 1994, is one of seven community colleges in the Maine Community College System. in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the GlandecoAngelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. Darger first wrote this in long hand (taking 11 years) and began typing it in 1912. But much more important than the composition were the hundreds of watercolors Lerner found that were done to illustrate his work, some done on legalsize sheets, others 3 or 4 feet high and 10 to 12 feet long composed of single sheets glued together. Henry Darger had no training in art and probably never visited a museum but the pictures are colorful and well done. He seemed to have an innate understanding of art and composition. He traced elements from other sources onto his pictures if he felt like it and if the picture he wanted to copy wasn’t the right size to fit in his composition, he took it to a camera shop to be enlarged or reduced in size. His art includes Edwardian interiors, tranquil flowered landscapes including children and fantastic creatures, to scenes of terror depicting children being tortured. Many of his paintings also included collage elements and other mixed media. For more information: barngallery.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, When I had XP and Outlook Express I saved some of my eml files because I wanted to make sure I would keep them. When I had to buy a new computer with Windows 7 it no longer uses Outlook Express and I have to use an online mailbox. I use gmail. Now I have file folders of saved eml files that I cannot view. Is there any way to access the files, is there a program that will let me see them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gigi in Ontario, Canada Dear Gigi, There is a program that can open your saved email messages, Windows Live Mail. You can download Windows Live Mail, free of charge from
Microsoft. Just search for Windows Essentials. Once you have downloaded and installed Windows Live Mail, you will be able to open any of your saved emails by double clicking on them. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I stop pop ups? John Dear John, Unwanted pop-ups today almost always come from malware on your computer. The best way to get rid of the malware and thus get rid of the pop-ups is to keep your antivirus and antimalware software on your computer up to date. I recommend a combination of AVG Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. These two programs
together will keep your computer running smoothly and block incoming malware. If your computer is infected with too many malware programs, it might need a good cleaning out at your local computer repair shop first. You can find safe links to both AVG and Malwarebytes on my website at www.asktcl.com. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have Vista and do OK with it. My problem is my “D” drive is full although I have lots of memory on my system. I get an error message every day saying my backup failed. The “D” drive has 14.9 GB used and 12.1 MB of free space. I have tried several friends to help me clean up this drive but to no avail. Can you help? Thank you. Louise Dear Louise, It sounds like your D: drive is actually a recovery partition

on your hard drive, which would explain why it is full. A recovery partition is a special section of your hard drive that holds all the files needed to recover your computer to factory condition if anything goes wrong with the software on your computer. For example, if you got infected with a virus. Computer manufacturers used to provide the recovery files on one or more disks (CDs or DVDs) and you could use the disks to repair your computer, but they have switched over to providing these files on your hard drive, probably because it cuts costs. If this is the case with your computer, then backing up to the D: drive is not a good idea, and probably not possible without losing the recovery files. I would suggest that you get an external hard drive that attaches to your computer by USB cable to backup to. Some other options to consider might be a

remote backup like Carbonite or Mozy, or you could backup to a CD or DVD. Backing up to your D: drive (which is part of your hard drive) does not protect your data from hard drive failure, fire, theft or even an electrical surge. An External hard drive will protect your data in the event that the hard drive on your computer fails, and probably from an electrical surge (If you don’t keep it plugged in all the time) but it still won’t protect you from fire or theft. Remote backup plans like Carbonite and Mozy run automatically in the background when your computer is running, and do protect you from hard drive failure, fire, theft, electrical surges, and even the dog eating your homework grin . In addition, the remote backup companies keep older versions of your files so that you can retrieve an older copy if you have problems with the copy currently on your computer. I hope this helps you with your backup. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’m working on a list in Microsoft Excel. I need to highlight certain lines with either yellow or purple, but still leave the text black. When I highlight the line and chose yellow or purple, it changes the text to either yellow or purple. Please help! Sylvia

SPORTS Southern Maine Youth Football League Jamboree BERWICK The Southern Maine Youth Football League (SMYFL), will be holding it’s annual football jamborees on August 23, hosted by the Noble Squires at Noble Middle School on Cranberry Meadow Road in Berwick. There will be two jamborees that will take place that day. The first starts at 12:30 for Grades 3 and 4 division with 8 teams participating, and at 5:30 p.m. under the lights, Grades 5 & 6 division with 9 teams participating. With good weather, we
expect there to be in the neighborhood of 2000 people that will attend through the course of the day and evening events. The jamborees are the kick off to our youth seasons, giving players an opportunity to get their first taste of football in a non-competitive environment, and to experience the excitement of playing in front of a large crowd of football family and friends. For many participants it will be their first time ever playing football or cheering for a sport. And for SMYFL, this
