Pres. Bush Sr. Sails with Disabled Aboard ‘Impossible Dream’ KENNEBUNKPORT – Former President George HW Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush set sail this past week with the crew of the Impossible Dream, a unique catamaran designed for disabled sailors, a chance for the watermen and activists to thank the 41st President of the United States for signing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in the summer of 1990. The sailors were excited to be able to offer the President - a renowned boater - the opportunity to take the helm of this remarkable accessible vessel. Deborah Mellen, skipper

of the Impossible Dream, was paralyzed in a car accident the

same year President Bush signed the landmark law. "The ADA

changed millions of lives for the better, and we're so pleased to be able to thank the President for his leadership 25 years ago," she said. "My life was never the same after my accident, but the ADA gives every disabled person hope for a happy and productive life. President Bush's impact on my life, and the life of so many others, has been profound." The former President and First Lady boarded the Impossible Dream for a sail on the Atlantic Ocean and a lunch catered by Ports of Italy restaurant in Kennebunk, Maine. The President, who at 91 often relies upon a wheelchair for mobility, piloted

the watercraft for most of the trip and experienced the unique controls that make it fully operational by a person in a wheelchair. The Impossible Dream, a 60-foot wheelchair accessible catamaran yacht, set sail from Miami, Florida this summer up the eastern seaboard in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the ADA. Along the way, the crew has taken over 400 wheelchair-bound children and adults and their families to enjoy a sail. Honor Flight Maine Celebrates 70th Anniversary WWII Ending STATEWIDE – Coordinators of Honor Flight Maine announced today that 27 Maine Veterans will be taking a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials built to honor their service to the nation. This trip, taking place August 29-30, 2015, is the fourth Honor Flight trip to be planned and executed for Veterans currently living in Maine.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. “Victory in Japan or VJ Day occurred 70 years ago in August 1945. The Japanese formally surrendered September 2, 1945. On that day, our fighting men and women finally realized that they would actually survive a war that took the lives of so many. On August 29, Honor Flight Maine will

McKay has been involved since 2003 and became executive director in 2006. South Berwick Lantern Fest Lights the August Night

By Carin Lee Contributing Reporter SOUTH BERWICK On Wednesday August 19, approximately two thousand

people wound their way down a hill through a field to the edge of a pond in the gathering darkness, carrying lanterns that lit the way at South Berwick’s fifth

annual Lantern Fest. The parade was the last event in a free night of activities held at Spring Hill. The evening was spon-

sored by SoBo Central, a South Berwick non-profit organization that acts as an umbrella organization for six programs designed to create a “more vibrant and caring community. SoBo

Central’s mission is carried out through other programs like Keep South Berwick Warm/ Soup Supper, Smart Growth/ Home for the Holidays, and Friends of Powderhouse Hill. All programs are designed to create a town that is healthy – environmentally, socially and economically. Organizers of this year’s Lantern Fest were Kara Plank, Hanna Bulger and Alanna Craffey. The Lantern Fest opened with activities for all ages. There were tables for children and adults to make lanterns out of clear plastic bottles covered with colored tissue paper. Kaylee Cardinal called it “pretty cool. Lily Byam was there for the first time having fun and creating a lantern that would make colors go together and glow. Children played with clay and scribbled on a giant piece of paper on which other children had left their own artwork. Folks bought memory lanterns in honor of loved ones. At the end of the parade the memory lanterns were floated out onto the pond, part of a Buddhist tradition in which lanterns are released on water as offerings to departing spirits. At 6:oo p.m., Sophie Towle, a Junior at Marshwood High School, opened the musical portion of the evening. The band PB&J of South Berwick followed with classic rock for the crowd. On the open field beyond the stage kids played volleyball, tossed lacrosse balls to one another, batted balls with the “Buoy Bat, a toy made in South Berwick, and stomped rockets into the air for other kids to catch. At 8:15 p.m., as the sun went down, people lit their lanterns and met at the top of Spring See LANTERNS page 6...

WELLS – The Fourth Annual "Woodies in the Cove" Car Show, scheduled for last Saturday, August 22, was rained out and has been rescheduled to this Saturday, August 29. It will take place as originally planned from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 974 Post Road (Route 1), Wells, Maine, next door to McDonald's. The Show will be followed by a parade with police escort down Route 1

through Perkins Cove, Ogunquit from 2 -3 p.m. The show is presented by the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit. L.F. (Sonny) Perkins organizer, of the show and Chairman of the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit, said there still are more than

50 "woodies" from eight states expected at the show, "the most ever". Woodies are motor vehicles made in part of real wood that were manufactured from the early years of the 20th Century through 1953. Virtually all of the woody cars and trucks at the show have been restored and are operable. FMI: facebook. com/WoodiesInTheCove.

Richard and Linda Becker led the procession as honorees of the parade because of their sponsorship of the festival over the years. They held up a giant paper mache heron with a 10-ft. wingspan, outlined with lights. Drummers on the route added pounding rhythm to the night and the sight of the heron, lanterns and marchers created a magical pageant. The parade ended at the bottom of the hill at the edge of the pond. Memory luminaries floated on the water as three fire dancers Gina DellaPasqua and Friends entertained the crowd, twirling and swinging hula hoops decorated with colored lights and lit with flames. The evening ended with an AfterGlow Party at Spring Hill Lodge restaurant, where Teen Sobo Sings/Teen Open Mic Night, another SoBo Central supported program, entertained the crowd. This amazing evening was made possible by the sponsorship of Great Northern Builders, Good Girl Graphics, Richard M. ~ News ~ ...FLIGHT from page 1 Flight Network on May 1, 2014. The Honor Flight Maine mission is to get all Maine Veterans of wars to see their memorials in Washington, D.C. at no cost to them. The Honor Flight network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s Veterans for all their sacrifices. The network is a nation-wide group of non-profit organizations called hubs, including Honor Flight Maine. Honor Flight transports these Veteran heroes to Washington, D.C., to visit their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior Veterans, World War II survivors, along with those Veterans who may be terminally ill regardless of the campaign in which they served. Of all the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as both a national and culturally diverse free society, and according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII Veterans die each day. The time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out. This Honor Flight Maine trip is planned for an August 29 early morning departure from the Portland Jetport, with an arrival into Baltimore Airport. The group of 55 people, Maine Veterans with their guardians and trip volunteer leaders will then travel by motor coach bus into D.C. The first stop of the day will be to visit and reflect at their WWII Memorial. Following this, they will be visiting the Korean, Vietnam, Marine (Iwo Jima), Air Force and Navy Memorials. The group will also visit Arlington National Cemetery to witness the “Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The group will have the privilege of participating in the wreath laying ceremony. Since 2005, when Honor Flight began, over 139,000 Veterans have made the trip that these Maine Veterans will be making. Many of the Veterans have made the comment that the trip was one of the best experiences of their lives. A recent Honor Flight Veteran said “I will never forget this trip, and another expressed “I just wish my buddies could have seen this. Honor Flight Maine would like to welcome the pubic to join flag-waving family members, friends and fellow veterans at the Portland Jetport’s terminal build-

Attendees are asked to arrive by 11:15 am and gather on the first floor of the terminal. Parking is free at the Jetport during the event. That is a great value for Maine taxpayers lowers costs and helps protect the environment. It’s not unusual for homes and farms to have unintentional hazardous waste—banned pesticides or pesticides that have become caked, frozen, or otherwise rendered unusable—sitting around in basements, garages, or barns. These chemicals can be difficult and expensive to dispose of; DACF Commissioner Walt Whitcomb stressed the importance of proper disposal of banned or unwanted pesticides. “It’s important for the protection of public, wildlife, and environmental health that these products are dealt with properly and not thrown in the trash or down the drain, where they can contaminate land and water resources, including See DISPOSE page 10...

Senior Surfing 101, a Local Program Teaches Older Americans How to Get Plugged In

SEACOAST – It’s not just children going back to school these days. Local seniors are learning to text/ Skype and use Facebook with

senior care companies with an office in our area started the “Senior Surfing 101â€? program to help its clients learn to surf the net. Caregivers go into seniors’ homes to teach tech – everything from text messaging and Skype to Facebook and the Internet. The program is part of Visiting Angels’ larger Life Care NavigationŠ which assists families to plan for different life stages that helps seniors socially connect and engage, cope with loss, and understand life changes. vital role in 72-year-old Kathryn’s life when she moved to Florida, leaving her son behind in Washington State. Kathryn’s Visiting Angels caregiver helped her move cross-country, taught her how to Skype and helped her create a Facebook page – just in time for the birth of her new granddaughter, Kate, in Washington! Because of this program, I was able to experience two of the greatest joys in life – becoming a grandmother and seeing my son become a new father, says Kathryn. “Skyping and Facebooking with my son and his family are now a normal part of my life. It helps me feel like I’m still an important part of their lives even though I’m miles and miles away. Log On to Battle Blues: The Visiting Angels “Senior Surfing 101 Program also helps older Americans battle depression. One fourth of all seniors over the age of 65 suffer from depression.

Recent studies show that Seniors who surf the internet can reduce depression by 20 percent.* A University of Arizona study finds seniors who use Facebook showed a 25 percent improvement in mental “updating skills - essentially improving their working memory. Another study shows seniors who visit social networking sites like Facebook have a positive emotional experience when measured by breathing rates, brain stimulation and pupil dilation.** “With our Senior Care Program we identify all the stages of life so we can care for seniors in a holistic way – care for their mind, body and spirit. These social connections play an important role in helping seniors heal from loss, validate the merit in their lives, and allow them to live comfortably in their own homes, says Visiting Angels CEO Larry Meigs. “We created Senior Surfing 101 as part of the program because we discovered when seniors reach out to family and friends with a text or through Facebook, they make immediate connections. This makes them feel in touch with their loved ones and less isolated. They often want to write a letter, but good luck getting the grandkids to write back. Send a text though, and those grandkids will respond right away. They’re learning new technology and that stimulates their minds and keeps them thinking. They crave learning, and now we’ve brought the class-

Then follow Joyce during her teenage and young adult years in Liverpool and London, her marriage to a parson, and three years on the remote Shetland Islands.

fering at Ogunquit Playhouse, is one of the best and most successful of its genre. Let’s start with the true story. On December 4, 1956, singer-guitarist Carl Perkins was scheduled to record several new songs at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Perkins had already scored a chart-topper with “Blue Suede Shoes, which he wrote, and he was aiming for his second big success. Sun Records owner Sam Phillips also brought in a young piano whiz, Jerry Lee Lewis, as a session musician. Although unknown to the public at the time, Lewis had recently signed to Sun and his first big hit would be released within the week.

Midway through the day, Perkins, Lewis and Phillips were joined by two other Sun musicians: Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Following the scheduled recordings, an impromptu jam developed that lasted all afternoon. Recognizing the uniqueness of the situation, Phillips called a newspaper, and the next day a photo and story appeared under the headline “Million Dollar Quartet. That’s the real-life story that underlies one of the most electrifying jukebox musicals ever created, “Million Dollar Quartet, written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. Their script relates a true story — much of it revolving around personal tensions and disputes over recording contracts — that actually transpired over a six-

month period, compressed for artistic unity into a few hours. The show contains 23 songs, representing early hits by all four of these rock-nroll icons. These include Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes and “Matchbox, Lewis’ “Real Wild Child and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On, Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues and “I

“Alfred Stieglitz: The Eloquent Eye Last Film in Series OGUNQUIT The summer of 2015 Art Videos at the Gallery series ends on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 7:30 p.m., with the showing of film about photographer “Alfred Stieglitz: The Eloquent Eye at the Barn Gallery, Bourne Lane and Shore Road in Ogunquit. Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) is revered as one of the most innovative photographers of the 20th century, a visionary who challenged attitudes toward photography as an art form. For his early education Alfred, as well as his father, felt that the New York City schools weren’t challenging enough so his father enrolled him in the rigorous schools in Germany. It was here that he met scientists working on the chemistry of photography. He bought his first camera and traveled through the European countryside taking many photographs of landscapes and peasants in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Stieglitz returned to New York in 1890 and bought his first hand-held camera, a Folmer and Schwing 4x5 plate film camera, an improvement over the 8x10 plate film camera that required using a tripod. He reveled in this

new found freedom and with it made some of his best known images: Winter, Fifth Avenue, and The Terminal. In 1894, he and his wife took a delayed honeymoon tour of Europe where he photographed extensively and met several prominent European photographers who would remain lifelong friends. A vital force in the development of modern art in America, Alfred Stieglitz’s importance lies as much in his work as an art dealer, exhibition organizer, publisher, and editor as it does in his career as a photographer. Through his three galleries in New York City, he mentored

This film, produced by American Masters, examines the achievements and legacy of this influential photographer. It is a revealing look at “the father of modern photography featuring a rare interview with Georgia O’Keeffe, Stieglitz’s wife, plus archival footage of other artistic giants he inspired including Edward Steichen and John Marin. The gallery has plenty of free parking and admission is free, too. For more information, visit www.barngallery.org.

‘Ruthless! The Musical’ is Dead-On Comedy, Tuneful Too By Scott Andrews Staff Columnist BERWICK Let’s start with the denouement: Five dead bodies are sprawled across the stage and a 10-year-old girl holds a smoking gun. She’s smiling broadly — totally satisfied with this tangled scene of carnage. Is this a theatrical depiction of a contemporary school shooting tragedy? Or a stage tragedy in the tradition of “Hamlet, “Tosca or the ancient Greeks? Neither. Instead it’s a deadon hilarious, gut-busting comic melodrama with a tuneful score to boot. With book and lyrics by Joel Paley and music by Marvin Laird, “Ruthless! The Musical is wonderfully funny comedy that skewers so many sacred cows that it’s hard to enumerate the herd. Debuting Off-Broadway in 1992, “Ruthless! The Musical is a show that’s unfortunately not produced as often as it deserves. But Hackmatack Playhouse, the epitome of lighthearted summer stock theater, is mounting a fine professional production as its final offering of 2015. The central themes are celebrity, fame and their accoutrements. Theater is the medium in

BUSINESS & FINANCE Review Taxes This Summer to Prevent a Surprise Next Spring Each year, many people get a larger refund than they expected. Some find they owe a lot more tax than they thought they would. If this happened to you, review your situation to prevent another tax surprise. Did you marry? Have a child? Have a change in income? Some life events can have a major effect on your taxes. You can bring the tax you pay closer to the amount you owe. Here are some key IRS tips to help you come up with a plan of action: New Job. When you start a new job, you must fill out a Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate and give it to your employer. Your employer will use the form to figure the amount of federal income tax to withhold from your pay. Use the IRS Withholding Calculator on IRS.gov to help you fill out the form. This tool is easy to use and it’s available 24/7. Estimated Tax. If you earn income that is not subject to withholding you may need to pay estimated tax. This may include income such as self-employment, interest, dividends or rent. If you expect to owe a thousand dollars or more in tax, and meet other conditions, you may need to pay this tax. You normally pay

it four times a year. Use the worksheet in Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals, to figure the tax. Life Events. Check to see if you need to change your Form W-4 or change the amount of estimated tax you pay when certain life events take place. A change in your marital status, the birth of a child or buying a new home can change the amount of taxes you owe. In most cases, you can submit a new Form W–4 to your employer anytime. Changes in Circumstances. If you are receiving advance payments of the premium tax credit, it is important that you report changes in circumstances, such as changes in your income or family size, to your Health Insurance Marketplace. You should also notify the Marketplace when you move out of the area covered by your current Marketplace plan. Advance payments of the premium tax credit help you pay for the insurance you buy through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Reporting changes will help you get the proper type and amount of financial assistance so you can avoid getting too much or too little in advance. For more information, visit www.irs.gov.

Social Security Marks 80th Anniversary This year marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act. On August 14, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law arguably the single most important piece of legislation in American history that has prevented poverty and improved the lives of elderly and disabled Americans for eight decades. When President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law in 1935, he envisioned keeping older Americans out of poverty after a lifetime of work. Social Security is America's premier program for helping people stay out of poverty and at some point, it touches the life of nearly every American. Since its inception, Social Security has been a precious lifeline to those whose ability to earn an income has been hampered by age, infirmity, or disability. In our country today, two in three elderly beneficiaries still rely on Social Security for half or more of their total income. For one in three, Social Security is virtually all (90 percent or more) of their income. Today, the Social Security Administration still keeps to this vision, but on a grander scale – to keep older Americans, people with dis-

abilities, wounded veterans, and the children and spouses of disabled workers out of poverty by providing a financial safety net and, in some cases, the opportunity to regain the ability to provide for themselves. On average, Social Security retirement benefits replace just 40 percent of a worker's earnings. Workers should think of these benefits as a foundation upon which they can build a secure and comfortable retirement with other sources of income, such as pensions, savings, and investments. Social Security is critically important for many of our state's most vulnerable citizens. We must be proactive in ensuring that this valuable lifeline remains a strong thread in the fabric of our citizen's fmancial futures. Today, the Social Security Administration has eight Social Security offices located in communities across the State of Maine and pay over $368 million in monthly benefits to approximately 325,000 eligible beneficiaries. Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Foster Homes Needed Fostering pets that are not ready for adoption is great way to make a difference. The Animal Welfare Society foster program allows us to care for many more animals than we could if they had to stay at the shelter. Many animals require more involved or long-term care. These cases are placed into foster care in volunteer and staff homes and return to the shelter when they are ready for adoption. All you need is a safe place in your home — away from family pets — and lots of love. AWS provides everything else, including beds, toys, food, litter and medical care; you name it! If you are interested in getting involved with our foster program, please visit www.animalwelfaresociety.org or stop by the shelter to fill out a foster application and submit to our See AWS page 28...

Voice for Animals was finally made aware of her situation and she and her mother and littermates were taken to a foster home. Marylin has come a long way toward getting used to people and will flourish in a patient, quiet home. She is 6-months old and would do well with other cats, especially one of her littermates Joon, Bennie or Saphira, also in the foster home. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – Meet Choco who slept through most of the Open House festivities. He received lots of pats and massages from friends and volunteers during the event, which was very nice. But his Big Wish hasn’t come true – yet. As he lay there napping, he dreamed he was in a home of his very own, a real family member. Choco’s life is safer and much happier now, but like most kitties he craves the love and attention that only a real home can give. Choco needed tons of expensive medical care when he arrived. He had a painful eye condition, needed dental work and

neutering. His recovery went well and his pain is gone. Now he’s just lonely. Please become Choco’s future. Meet this Chocolate Point Siamese / possibly Burmese mix, who’s only 3-5 years old. He’s a handsome, blue-eyed, gentle fellow with a gentle heart. Call Leonore at 985-3227 to schedule a meet-up. Visitors raved about how happy our kitties are and the amount of sunshine that pours into our cage-free cat rooms. They loved how comfortable and home-like our new center is, and how Safe Haven seems nothing like a shelter. Yet that’s what it is, with quarantine and intake rooms, careful cleaning and sanitizing protocols, all thanks to our hardworking teams of caregivers. This a wonderful celebration marks the beginning of Phase II of our Capital fundrais-

ing Campaign. We still have a huge mortgage to pay off, and many planned improvements to our building and grounds. Please continue to support our efforts to make Safe Haven Humane Society’s No-Kill Adoption Center all that we envision for our communities’ homeless felines. Big Thrift Shop Sale: Starting Saturday at 10 a.m., all summer clothes, shoes, and handbags are clearance-priced, just $1 each!

...HAVEN from page 1 “It was awful knowing we wouldn’t have a home,” said McKay. Fortunately, the former day care center, located at 1420 Post Road, was available and proved an ideal spot with ample parking and room for eventual outdoor expansion, including enclosed cat runs so the kitties can enjoy the fresh air. “We closed on the new facility in the spring and worked with a local contractor this summer to do the renovations,” said McKay. The new facility houses 60 cats comfortably and includes a large in-take and quarantine section, five well-lit cat rooms with perches and resting places and a new kitchen and reception area. Volunteers are Safe Haven’s life-blood, giving their time and energy to make the

kitties comfortable as they adjust to shelter life and wait for new homes. “We have about 75 volunteers who provide morning cat care and come in and socialize our shy kitties. It’s important to have someone hold them and care for them,” said McKay. Volunteer Beth Carroll, of Berwick, is at the shelter every Tuesday and Sunday helping to feed the cats, scoop litter boxes and clean. “I adopted my cat here and decided to volunteer. Scooping poop isn’t the greatest. But I love cats and taking care of them is necessary. I love the new building, too,” Carroll said. Campanella, a teenage cat lover, can’t have one at home, so she volunteers. “My parents are allergic so I come here to help take care

of them,” she said. New volunteer Barbara Wood of Wells loves helping the kitties, too. “I have a houseful (of cats), but I come in every week to volunteer. It’s a great environment and you can’t help but be happy and enjoy yourself being with the cats,” she said. McKay is grateful to Subway in Wells and the Wells IGA Supermarket for generous food donations for the open house, plus over two dozen items donated for a silent auction. Opportunities abound to help Safe Haven, including money and food and litter donations, donating and purchasing items at the fundraising Thrift Shop next to the IGA, cat foster care and helping at the shelter. White House Conference on Aging Showcases Activity During Go4Life Month In collaboration with the White House Conference on Aging, Go4Life, the national exercise and physical activity campaign for people 50+ from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is bringing together more than a hundred federal, state and local partners to encourage older adults to move more and stay active for better health with advancing age. In September, the campaign will celebrate Go4Life Month with the theme of “Be Active Every Day! Campaign partners across America will mark the month by increasing awareness and sponsoring activities that engage community members, of all ages, in exercise and physical activities they enjoy. This community focus of Go4Life Month, the NIA hopes, will help expand the reach of the campaign so that increasing numbers of older adults can reap the benefits of exercise and physical activity. Go4Life helps by providing information and motivational tools to help older adults increase their physical

activity and by working with local and national organizations to provide an environment that supports these efforts. “It’s never too late for exercise to have a positive effect on your health, said NIA Director Richard J. Hodes, M.D. “We know that exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, stroke, diabetes and other chronic conditions. One recent study found that even sedentary people in their 70s and 80s improved mobility and reduced risk of disability through a regular program of structured physical activity. “The establishment of Go4Life Month will help draw attention to the critical importance of exercise with age and the resources that we can provide to support adults who want to do more, Hodes said. The heart of the Go4Life campaign is an interactive website – Go4Life.nia.nih.gov – with sample exercises, success stories, and free materials to motivate the growing numbers of baby boomers—and their parents—to get ready, start exercising and keep going to improve their health and achieve

a better quality of life. For a list of activities planned thus far for Go4Life Month, go to Go4life.nia.nih. gov/event-list. To learn more about becoming a Go4Life partner, go to Go4life.nia.nih. gov/partner. For more information, go to Go4Life.nia.nih. gov. For more information on healthy aging, go to www.nia. nih.gov.

Aromatherapy Treats a Variety of Conditions and Help Manage Symptoms Say the word “Aromatherapy to the average consumer and they probably think of the wide variety of products commonly found on supermarket shelves, but the therapeutic work of a qualified Aromatherapist should never be confused with plugin air fresheners or scented candles. Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils — the natural extracts from plants. An essential oil is the distillate of an aromatic plant found in the flower,

wood, bark, leaves, roots, seeds and peels of many plants. These oils are concentrated, potent compounds and are very often diluted in “carrier oils, such as jojoba, for therapeutic applications. Every essential oil carries with it many unique chemical properties that can have various therapeutic effects and are effective at balancing the emotions, centering the mind and eliminating physical pain, inflammation and toxicity. For example, the essential oil of Rosemary has both the therapeutic properties of an an-

tibacterial and can also stimulate short-term memory recall. Healing treatments with essential oils are much more subtle than tradition treatments and they leave our bodies without taxing our livers, like most modern drugs. Although it has been practiced for thousands of years, Aromatherapy has only recently become popular in modern culture as we return to a more holistic lifestyle, recognizing the importance of combining the mind, body and spirit to achieve optimum health and

wellness. In addition, aromatherapy appeals to people searching for alternatives to the ubiquitous pharmaceutical drugs, such as antibiotics, anti-depressants and painkillers, which can have severe and sometimes lethal side effects. The ancient art of treating ailments with herbs and aromatics began over 5000 years ago. Aromatherapy, as it is practiced today, began with the Egyptians, who used the method of infusion to extract the oils from aromatic plants which were used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes, as well as embalming. Other ancient civilizations, such as the Chinese, Greeks, Romans and Indians also used aromatics for cosmetic and medicinal purposes. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the use of aromatics faded and the knowledge of their use was virtually lost in Europe during the dark ages. How does it work? When you smell something, it’s because an unstable molecule of that substance has “broken off and floated over to your nose. We smell with not just our noses, but with our entire bodies! When the essential oils of certain plants enter our bodies, either through our olfactory system (smell) or by direct contact with our skin, they communicate biochemically with our nervous, endocrine and immune systems,

(Psycho-Neuro-Immunology or PNI) stimulating the body’s cells back to a healthy balance. PNI is the study of the connections between the mind (psycho), brain (neuro) and the body’s ability to defend itself against disease (immune). A certified Aromatherapist uses essential oils to treat a wide variety of symptoms externally and vibrationally, making the treatment truly holistic. Treatments, remedies and methods of application can be customized, remedy and method of application to meet a patient’s individual needs. Aromatherapy can treat a variety of conditions, help manage symptoms and act as a complementary therapy to traditional medicine. Visit HealingGiftsfromtheSun. com for more information. Kraft Heinz Foods Company of Newberry, SC, is recalling approximately 2,068,467 pounds of turkey bacon products that may be adulterated because it may spoil before the “Best When Used By date, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Tuesday. The problem was discovered by the establishment during an investigation into spoilage-related consumer complaints. FSIS has not received any confirmed reports of adverse reactions related to the consumption of these products. However, the company has received reports of illness related to the consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider. The turkey bacon was produced between May 31, 2015, and Aug. 6, 2015. The following products are subject to recall: 56-oz. cardboard boxes

through 30 OCT 2015. The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-9070 inside the USDA mark of inspection, as well as the line number “RS19. These items were shipped nationwide and exported to the Bahamas and St. Martin. FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website. Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the Kraft Heinz Consumer Relations Center at (800) 278-3403.

The 20152016 season is their 12th year of family-friendly dance. Academy of Dance will shortly open their second studio location, at 45 Wells Plaza #9, near Reny's and next door to the former Radio Shack store. After extensively researching the market for Dance Studios

throughout York County, the Wells area was identified as one with a shortage of quality dance education. Workmen are hard at work preparing the space for the start of the 2015-2016 season. Open houses are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1 and Sept. 8 from 4-6 p.m. Open Houses and dance workshops have been offered to introduce the studio and staff to the Wells community. Fall registration is now

Fabulous Find Announces Beneficiaries for August KITTERY – The Fabulous Find Resale Boutique, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which partners with different worthy, local non-profit organizations each month, announces the beneficiaries for August: Sole City Dance, On Belay, and Arts In Reach. Sole City Dance is a 501(c) (3) non-profit dance education center offering programs in classical, contemporary and urban dance to boys and girls of the greater Tri-City region. Executive director, Christine Hounsell, explains, “Our goal is to share the power and benefits of dance through classes and community performances. Funds raised in August will allow us to offer more class

scholarships and tickets to those who would otherwise be unable to afford them. On Belay, the seacoastbased non-profit, uses adventure-based programs to build community for youth facing the tough life challenge of a diagnosed family member. Participants connect with other children facing similar family situations. “Living with a parent’s or sibling’s diagnosis can be a long, lonely, life-changing experience. Through the On-Belay programs, children become part of a community that understands the challenges they are facing. It’s a community that joins them in celebrating life, not fear, stated On Belay Program Director, Liz Weld. Arts In Reach (AIR) is a

non-profit organization that empowers teenage girls and sparks their creative interests through performing, literary, and visual arts education programming. AIR provides free after-school and vacation arts programming for teen girls (ages 13 to 18) in the greater seacoast of NH. “Our goal is to make a positive impact in the lives of teenage girls through mentoring and the arts, says Mary-Jo Monusky, AIR Executive Director. All profits during the month of August will be donated to the three organizations. The Fabulous Find Resale Boutique is located on 139 State Road in Kittery. OGUNQUIT/WELLS The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) has announced the award of nearly $250,000 to eleven projects along the length of the Maine coast. The funds from the DACF Maine Coastal Program will provide support for the coastal economy through implementation of projects that will increase

public access to the coast, support shellfish harvesting, identify pollution sources that result in coastal beach closures, revitalize coastal downtowns, and identify key island transportation assets at risk from rising sea levels. The grant program is an important element of the DACF Maine Coastal Program work plan, which in-

A small but enthusiastic audience greeted this show with gales of laughter on opening weekend. I especially liked the three-way match-up of Schaufler, Miles and Batchelder. Kudos also to Wing, Perry and Craven; each has at least one splendid moment. Nora Long directs, while Adam McDougall plays the piano accompaniment onstage. Craven also designed the scenery, which comprises two pleasing sets: the Denmarks’ suburban living room in the first act and Judy Denmark’s penthouse in the second. It’s sad to see Hackmatack’s 2015 season ending, but owner-producer Michael Guptill certainly exits with the proverbial bang.

cludes regional and local elements administered through the DACF Municipal Planning Assistance Program. The funds are made possible through Maine’s federal coastal zone management award from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). All of the projects include collaboration and partnerships and each grantee provides a minimum of 25 percent in matching funds or services. Local towns that were awarded grants included: Town of Ogunquit: $28,599 for addressing Bacteria Contamination in the Ogunquit River Watershed. The nationally recognized beach communities of the Ogunquit River watershed attract over a million visitors each year, contributing over $1.6 million to the local and regional economy. However, this area faces persistent bacteria contamina-

tion in the freshwater streams, estuaries, and at public beaches. Beach closures threaten the reputation of this area as a prime tourist destination and the associated economic benefits of the tourist economy. This project will expand water quality sampling and survey work currently being done in the town of Ogunquit to include all towns in the watershed. This will provide a more complete picture of the causes of the contamination and allow development of a plan of action for mitigating the problem. Town of Wells: $5,200 for Wells Marsh Walk Project. With this funding, the town of Wells will complete surveying, engineering and design work for a 1,200-foot trail between Harbor Park and a viewing platform overlooking the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. This project is part of a nature-based tourism strategy for the Wells Harbor region.

Obituaries Ann R.Wildnauer, 93 NORTH BERWICK – Ann R. Wildnauer, born December 9, 1921, passed away quietly in the home of her daughter surrounded by her family: Fred A. Wildnauer and Patti Mitchem of South Berwick, K. Lynn Wildnauer and Dayton F. Haigney of South Berwick, Kenn R.Wildnauer and Sharon Venzke of Santa Rosa, CA. Maine Contractors Invest in Crane Safety and Training

STATEWIDE – While the Federal Government prepared to roll out new crane operator standards, contractors in Maine teamed up to develop new training opportunities in anticipation of the changes. “Our Workforce Development Director Don Partridge suggested the industry would need a classroom and practical training course to meet changes in regulations five years ago. That is the wonderful thing about trade associations and having members who value investing in safety and workforce development. Don has developed a terrific program,” said Matthew Marks CEO of Associated General Contractors of Maine. The AGC Maine crane program begins with three days of classroom work designed to prepare students for a written exam administered by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). During the three days, students learn critical information about the different types of cranes, how to read load charts, and have the opportunity to run through a variety of hypothetical situations. When Maine weather breaks, students who passed the written exam can apply to take a practical test in the field. The demand for this training is evident in the fact that 35 new tests were administered for fifteen crane operators last week alone. “The goal is to make the industry more safe and more knowledgeable. The training

and testing process is not easy, so the operators who dedicate the time and effort to pass the written and practical exams show a strong commitment to the industry and their careers,” said Partridge. In 2002, OSHA announced it would update the 30-year old crane standard in response to industry pressure. “AGC Maine tries to anticipate where a gap in training exists or where our members have the resources and equipment to develop a great program. Cranes are a specialty trade and only a very limited number of firms have had comprehensive training programs in years past. We worked with companies with existing training programs, insurance firms, AGC America, and a private firm with decades of experience to put together an exciting and successful training package to offer the industry,” said Partridge. Since introducing the

course in 2011, AGC Maine has prepared 201 operators for the exam and has facilitated 317 tests. The Association expects demand to grow as compliance dates are set for the new regulations and the Chapter will continue to strengthen the program by offering more services. “The program has already been expanded to include training supervisors who are not the crane operators themselves but are responsible for the entire job site. The goal of the program is to make sure they have a basic understanding of how an operator makes decisions on safety. It has been a true eye-opener for many of the attendees,” Don said. Tim Ouellette, AGC Maine Board President and coowner of CPM Constructors, knows how valuable it is for his company to have well-trained operators. “Part of AGC Maine’s core mission is to train skilled construction workers

York County Committee Awards Grant to Expand Culinary Works YORK COUNTY – The York County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation recently awarded $35,000 in grants to six nonprofits, including Creative Work Systems to expand the Culinary Works program by upgrading and certifying the kitchen at the York facility. Other grant recipients include: Habitat for Humanity York County, to support the Keep York County Warm! home weatherization program; Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine, to expand prevention education programming in York County for students in kindergarten through

college. The York County Fund is a permanent endowment that supports projects that strengthen communities in York County. Applications to the fund are reviewed by a committee of local leaders. The next proposal deadline is February 15, 2016. The application and guidelines can be found at www.mainecf.org. The York County Fund is built through donations from the community. If you wish to donate to the fund, please contact Stephanie Eglinton, MaineCF senior program officer, at 207-761-2440, ext. 2205, or seglinton@mainecf.org. To learn more about the foundation, visit www.mainecf.org.

in all trades. The crane training program at AGC Maine provides a way for Maine companies to get their operators trained and certified here in Maine instead of sending their employees out-of-state. This has been one of AGC Maine’s most successful programs and ensures Maine construction projects have the most skilled and safest crane operators around," Tim stated. AGC Maine is currently planning the next round of training for 2016. It will include more classroom training and practical courses. "This is great for Maine contractors. Getting this off the ground quickly allowed us to train a large number of operators ahead of the new OSHA crane standard. It will increase safety awareness, oper-

ator effectiveness, and certainly compliance with these federal regulations. Without the incredible support from Maine firms this type of cutting edge training doesn’t happen. That is a good indication of how business owners in the construction industry care about their people and the safety of their job sites," said Don. Chartered in 1951, the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Maine is the state’s largest construction industry trade association. The Association maintains an office in Augusta and has 180 members statewide. Member companies include general contractors, sub-contractors, and service and supply providers. KENNEBUNK Atria residents Ethel Mae Theriault, Charlene Bourbon, Anna Livingstone and Marjorie Brown participated in a still life charcoal study with River Tree Arts instructor, Russel Whitten. They experimented working with light and shadow, implying texture, smudging and creating the illusion of three-dimensional forms. Brown told the class; “I drew something that actually looked like something. I didn’t think my brain was capable of doing art. He really taught us a

lot today.” Whitten has been an instructor at River Tree Arts in Kennebunk for several years. He teaches watercolor, basic drawing and charcoal to artists of all ages. “I enjoy talking to my students about art and color while helping them to create pictorial structures. There is a value in this. It is an endless magic that works if we trust it.” Says Whitten. To find out more about River Tree Arts or to enroll in a class, visit their website rivertreearts.org.

...QUARTET from page 16 tions, winning one. A long national tour wrapped up this past June, and performing rights were released at the same time. Ogunquit Playhouse scored first-summer rights to “Million Dollar Quartet and opened it last weekend to soldout audiences. It was sensationally good. All four principal actors are spot-on, both in looks, voice and mannerisms: Robert Britton Lyons as Perkins, Nat Zegree as Lewis, Scott Moreau as Cash and Jacob Rowley as Presley. Lyons originated his role on Broadway and has been with the show throughout its life. Moreau and Rowley were on the national tour. (Moreau grew up in Litchfield, Maine.) With his boundless energy, acrobatics and piano skills, Zegree is the show-stopper. Additionally, Jason Loughlin plays Phillips and Bligh Voth takes the role of “Dyanne. Hunter Foster, who was cast as Phillips on Broadway, directs Ogunquit’s production. Ogunquit executive artistic director Brad Kenney has scored another coup by snagging the exquisitely detailed original sets from the Broadway and national touring productions.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I love your newsletter. I read them even though I think I know what to do and usually learn a great lesson. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Today I have a question about printing the list of what I have saved in a folder. I use Windows 8.1. I am an embroidery sewer and have dozens of files that I have downloaded to my computer. The nightmare comes when I need to find a particular file. My naming protocol is scary at best and just downright impossible to find when I’m in a hurry. I have files on my hard drive, on memory sticks and CDs. I started the filing system without thinking about it being difficult to find a file. The digitizer names the files. Some have a name that is description of the item in the files such as ChristmasTree.

pes. Some have a number which doesn’t give a clue as to what is in the file. Some have 8 to 10 files with the exact same name with the only difference being the size. I just plain need help and any suggestion you have for me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bette Dear Bette, As a fellow saver of embroidery files, I have a couple of tools that I can share with you. One is free and will help you to organize your files and the other is not free, but will help you view and print your files. First for the free tool. The secrets of embroidery website has a handy set of empty folders that are great for organizing embroidery files. I downloaded the folders many years ago, and have even added to them when I have a design

that doesn’t seem to fit in any of the available. You can read about their organizing ideas and download the folders at: www. secretsof.com/content/608. The second tool that I use and I think you will find invaluable is the Embird embroidery software. You can find Embird at: www.embird.net. Embird will help you do two things that are extremely helpful. First, you will be able to print a catalog of all designs in a folder. This is what you are looking for in your original question, and I have used it in the past to print out a catalog of designs. It is great if you want to give people a list of designs to choose from. The file name is listed beneath each image which makes it easy for you to go back and select the right file. For an extra $20. you can purchase the iconizer plugin for Embird, which will allow you to see an icon for each em-

broidery file showing what the design is. This saves on paper, but allows you to easily see what each design looks like when browsing your files in Windows. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, You haven’t said anything yet about Windows 10. They are offering it for free. Should I try it out? Joan Dear Joan, I am going to name this week’s issue, The Windows 10 issue of Ask The Computer Lady, because the questions about 10 are starting to roll in like a flood! I have installed Windows 10 a few times for myself and my customers and have a few thoughts. 1. Backup, Backup, Backup! When possible, I make a complete image of your hard drive before I upgrade your computer to Windows 10. That way, if anything goes wrong, I can restore the image and you are back

to where you started before the upgrade. 2. Backup your files! I have heard a few horror stories from people who upgraded and somehow lost all their pictures and documents. I don’t know exactly what went wrong, but the solution is easy, backup your important files before even attempting to upgrade to Windows 10. 3. Do a little research. Go to the website of your computer manufacturer and look up your model to see if they are supporting Windows 10 on your computer. Most newer computers will, but some older ones will not. 4. Resolve any Existing Problems. If your computer is having issues before upgrading to Windows 10, chances are the issues will get worse, not better by upgrading. 5. Wait A Little While. I like to wait a few months and let other people work with Microsoft to work out the bugs in the new operating system. Those are just my thoughts on getting Windows 10, hopefully they will help you decide what you want to do about the free upgrade offer. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
