‘The Jacket Project: Refashioned History’ Exhibit By Gillette YORK – Contemporary art and artists are often cited for, and sometimes accused of, pushing the limits of conventions to challenge and provoke the viewer’s experience. Artist Lauren Gillette thinks of herself as a story teller or, rather, re-teller. Her stories center on peoples’ lives and experiences, thoughts and longings. In Gillette’s Jacket Project she has scribed these stories on to the surface of leather jackets. Why jackets, why leather? Perhaps the jacket represents the skin of the individual wherein lies the true self. “I am a conceptual artist. Biography, history, and text, are my bricks, aesthetics, repetition and empathy, my mortar. I bear witness.” The Jacket Project by Gillette will be on exhibit at York Public Library from September 3 through October 30. The artist’s reception will be held on Sept. 23, at 5 p.m. This exhibit is one of the more contemporary show-

not seem to be an order to how these stories are revealed. They appear to be helter-skelter and conjure up an overly exuberant

form or another. The Jacket Project is dear to her heart as each jacket with its myriad of planes, allows her a lot of elbow room to mine for information, to research, fact gather and interview her way through someone’s life over a period of months and sometimes years. Though intimate in tone, societal issues of wars, racism, poverty and the like are often defining factors in these stories. Gillette has also exhibited the Jacket Project at the Portland Museum of Art. She lives and works in her studio in southern Maine. The York Public Library is located at 15 Long Sands Road in York. Kite Flying on Ogunquit Beach Saturday September 13, one of the featured events of Capriccio’s Festival of the Arts.

Capriccio – Ogunquit’s Festival of The Arts OGUNQUIT – Capriccio was started by Ogunquit Performing Arts (OPA) 24 years ago to celebrate Ogunquit’s 10th anniversary as an independent town. It has grown from a weekend event to a two-week long town-wide Festival of the Arts from September 1 to September 14. OPA’s featured event for Capriccio 2014 takes place on Saturday night, September 6 at 8 p.m. at the Dunaway Center with the performance by Occidental Gypsy, a band that compliments

original material with expertly arranged ‘gypsified’ covers. Their unique approach to world, pop, jazz and dance music stems from the influence of Gypsy Swing founders, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. An Occidental Gypsy performance includes so much more than just music. Scottie, Eli, Brett, Jeff, and Erick are incredibly energetic and charming entertainers. On stage, the dialog between band members is entertaining, esSee ARTS page 7...

person babbling on and on. At first glance statements and opinions seem to collide, but as you ponder each jacket, each disparate statement begins to reveal the life, times and inner workings of her subjects. Her subjects, some famous, some caught up in the political turmoil of their time and some known to Gillette personally, come from many walks of life and historical and cultural periods. As in storytelling the viewer is subject to the story teller’s interpretation of the person’s life story by what is chosen to be revealed. And therein lies the artist at work; creatively fashioning history. Since graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1983, Lauren Gillette has been storytelling in one art-based
