Jay Hollis

Passion for Puzzles

A photo of Jay Hollis with his ÒHot Rods, BentleyÕs Saloon,Ó made from an image taken by photographer Steve Wells of Wells.

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Reporter WELLS Jay Hollis is passionate about jigsaw puzzles Ă‘ but not the run-of-the-mill cardboard kind you find in toy stores and stationary shops. Hollis craves hand-cut wooden jigsaw puzzles, the ones he adeptly crafts in his Wells workshop. The end result after hours of painstaking work are beautiful, challenging puzzles Ă‘ true works of art, acclaimed by puzzle-lovers world-wide, including former First Lady Barbara Bush, a puzzle fan, who owns six of his designs. Hollis brings his puzzles to the 29th Laudholm Nature

Crafts Festival, on SaturdaySunday, September 10 and 11 at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm. ItÕs his second appearance at the popular show. ÒThe Laudholm festival is a great experience,Ó said Hollis. ÒThereÕs a lot of activity and the people are friendly, engaging and interested in what I am doing.Ó Attendees will have a chance to talk to Hollis and learn how he makes his hand-crafted puzzles. HeÕll have 25 or so on hand, including many for adults, and some for kids. All are for sale. Hollis uses Ÿ-inch thick 5-ply mahogany plywood for his puzzles. The colorful images are printed directly onto the epoxy-

coated, wooden surface, which is polished and buffed to a luxurious, mirror-like finish. Hollis free-hand cuts each puzzle piece, using an imported scroll saw with blades as fine as a single horse hair. Hollis's puzzles are also known for their Òwhimsies,Ó since he believes that puzzles Òshould be fun.Ó ÒI cut whimsies Ñ humorous or playful figures Ñ into each puzzle,Ó he said. ÒCustomers can select their own figures. Whimsies can be a favorite animal, a personÕs initials, special dates, a sporting activity or hobby or even See PUZZLES page 11...

Yoga on York River with Katie Johnson By Alyssa McArdle, Staff Reporter YORK People are drawn to yoga for a multitude of reasons: health, weight loss, stress reduction. For Katie Johnson, it was out of necessity. Ă’I started doing yoga after a bad car accident left me with a broken neck,Ă“ she said. Ă’It was the only thing that worked in the long term to heal me.Ă“ Johnson, who grew up in Westfield, MA, was a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst when the accident took place in 2009. She retuned

home to Westfield after the accident and began yoga classes

fell completely in love in with the practice,Ă“ she said. Now, seven years later, Johnson is a certified yoga instructor, an advocate for a nonprofit yoga outreach and a local pioneer in the newest trend for yogis: practicing yoga on paddle boards on the water. Ă’I started teaching at Yoga on York in the village,Ă“ said Johnson. Ă’Then I tried stand up paddle board yoga around Boston last summer and decided that this needs to be available in See YOGA page 20...
