National Call Out to Wave Flags on 9/11 Anniversary STATEWIDE On Friday, September 11, Wreaths Across America calls for every American to stand outside and wave a flag for one minute at 8:46 a.m. and then again at 9:03 a.m. to honor the exact times the hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Following the events of 9/11, three patriotic women (Elaine Greene, Joann Miller and Carmen Foote) were so moved by what happened found an old American flag they had stored at home and stood on a hill in Freeport, waving the flag to honor victims. These women became nationally known as “The
Freeport Flag Ladies,” and proudly hoisted the Stars and Stripes every Tuesday morning for the following 18 years. After they retired on September 11, 2019, (their last 9/11 remembrance) Wreaths Across America took the helm and continued the weekly flag waving tradition along US Route 1 in Jonesboro, on land donated by the organization’s founder Morrill Worcester leading to the new Acadia National Cemetery. Since that time Worcester has added a mile stretch of American flags (105 in total) on both sides of the road that lead to the entrance of Acadia National Cemetery which
will open to the public for the first time on Saturday, August 29. Worcester also donated the land for this new National Cemetery to be built in his hometown. “Each Tuesday, we are joined by dozens of members of the local community and curious people stopping to be part of something meaningful,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America, and wife of Morrill Worcester. “Especially over the last six months, this flag waving has taken on new meaning for us all and given a spark of hope and patriotism during this difSee FLAGS page 4...

ern Maine, the program is being administered by the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) in partnership with the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. Grants will be calculated based on business losses reported by qualified applicants, proportional to overall losses for all applicants (not first-come first-served.) To apply, businesses and nonprofits should visit the Maine Economic Recovery Grant Program website at www.maine. gov/decd/economic-recoverygrants and file an application by September 9. Note: the application must include a DUNS number - a unique nine-digit identifier required by the federal government. Businesses can acquire a DUNS number through instructions provided on the DECD website. According to Paul Schumacher, Executive Director of SMPDC, “It’s urgent that businesses and nonprofits act now and jump on this opportunity immediately. The application process is long and if a business does not already have a DUNS number, it can take a number of

days to get one. This program is a unique opportunity for the region and we want as many qualified organizations and businesses as possible to take advantage of this government assistance to deal with the economic impacts of COVID-19.” The funding for this state program originates from the federal Coronavirus Relief Fund and will be awarded in the form of grants to directly alleviate the disruption of operations suffered by Maine’s small businesses and non-profits as a result of the pandemic. The Maine Department of Economic & Community Development has been working closely with affected Maine organizations since the beginning of this crisis and has gathered feedback from all sectors on the current challenges. Grants will be distributed based on a business’s/organization’s demonstrated losses as a prorated percentage of the total losses reported by qualified applicants. The program is not intended to replace lost profits but only to help businesses remain viable. The grants are considered taxable income and subject to audit. Southern Maine Planning and

A New School Year Begins
YORK COUNTY The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) have developed a colorcoded system to help determine how best to return to school (www.maine.gov/doe/framework/part-I/#risk). York County has been given the green light to reopen schools in person. The common safety guidelines will apply to attend schools: Symptom screening at home before coming to school for staff and students, physical distancing, face covering, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment where appropriate, and remaining at home during illness. School campuses are discouraging unnecessary visitors in order to reduce foot traffic. In the event
of infection, medical isolation rooms have been created for students or staff to quarantine until they can return home. School facilities have been revamped to accommodate distancing, including individual desks and/or plastic shielding, and well-serviced ventilation systems with ultraviolet ionizers added in some cases. Outdoor tent spaces and keeping windows open all day will provide fresh air as well. Students have been asked to minimize the use of backpacks, if possible. Supplies will be made available at school, and where textbooks are issued, they will remain at home. Teachers have also restructured lessons to synchronize with remote learners. Many schools are choosing to start the school year with a hybrid plan. The goal of a hybrid

education model is to reduce the numbers of students and staff in one place at the same time. Examples of hybrid models include: Utilizing larger spaces or spreading out into other buildings to reduce crowd sizes and to increase capacity for physical distancing; Alternating schedules so that some students are in school while others learn remotely, and then they transition back and forth between these two modalities; Offering students the option to choose remote learning for an agreed-upon period of time (for a quarter or semester, for example); Customizing support for students and teachers who are at high risk – for example, synchronous lessons could be provided by a teacher who uses Zoom to teach lessons from home while a substitute provides classroom management. Additionally, many schools are using “cohorts”, a group of students who progress through an educational experience together. The CDC recommends caregivers transport their children to and from school whenever possible to limit potential exposure on the school bus. However, bus transportation will be available for any student who needs

I will continue to work with Secretary of State Dunlap and municipal officials to safeguard the sacred right of all Maine people to vote and to keep them healthy while they do so.” “We’d like to thank Gov. Mills for taking these steps to ease the process of administering and participating in an election during this pandemic,” said Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap. “This order will give Maine voters additional time to participate in the democratic process while also strengthening our municipal clerks’ ability to process the unprecedented influx of absentee ballots that we expect for this election.” In her Executive Order, Governor Mills, among other measures: Extends the deadline for voter registration applications submitted by mail or third person from October 13 to October 19. best known for placing veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of our nation’s fallen at Arlington National Cemetery. The organization, in total, places more than 2 million sponsored wreaths at over 2200 participating locations nationwide and offers other programs throughout the calendar year. These programs remember the events of 9/11 in their own way such as The Mobile Education Exhibit which will be visiting Kentucky in September and will join in the national flag waving effort. Interested parties can sponsor a wreath for $15 at www.wreathsacrossamerica. org. Each sponsorship goes toward a fresh balsam veteran’s wreath that will be placed on the headstone of an American hero on Saturday, December 19, as part of National Wreaths Across America Day.

the greatest extent possible. The Kittery School District does recognize that it may be necessary to transition to a hybrid or remote learning model, in the event that health and safety recommendations require smaller group sizes and a greater degree of physical distancing. The Kittery Community Center has been offered by town officials as classroom space and human resources to support families of students in grades K-5 who may need childcare during the hours when their child is not at school. The tentative plan is to have six classrooms with a grade level dedicated to each classroom along with at least one KCC staff member providing supervision, engaging organized play, and academic support. This is a valuable resource for families of young children who will need their child to be engaged in learning and play during typical school hours. For families who also capitalize on the SAFE after school program, the two options may work in tandem to support working parents. The Kittery School District includes Horace Mitchell Primary, Shapleigh, and Robert W. Traip Academy. For updates, visit www.kitteryschools.com. In order to be able to provide appropriate staffing and curricular continuity, students will remain in their chosen option for the duration of Semester 1 (until mid-January) at which point that decision can be reevaluated. At the PK level there will be two options available to start the year. The two options will be a fully remote academy or a reduced school week in which students would attend two halfdays per week. PK is scheduled to begin September 14. At the K level there will be two options available to start the year. The two options will be a fully remote academy or a reduced school day in which half of each individual class will attend in-person in the morning and half of each individual class will attend in-person in the afternoon. This schedule will remain for the entire year unless the state guidelines change drastically. K is also scheduled to begin September 14. At the grades 1-5 level there will be two options available to start the year: fully remote academy or a full day in-person program. attend school prior to a COVID19 vaccine being available. The plan, based on survey data, will have grade 1-5 students attend half days 9-11:45 a.m. September 8-18, to allow those students to adjust to new routines, including social distancing, wearing a mask, etc. Students will then transition to a full day 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. starting September 21. If more than 80% of students in grades 1-5 elect to return to inperson instruction, the school will not be able to meet all of the State’s distancing requirements and a different model will need to be instituted. At the grade 6-12 level there will be two options available: a fully remote academy or a hybrid model in which students will attend in-person instruction two days per week and engage in remote learning three days per week. Parents will be asked to select between those two options for the duration of Semester 1 (until mid-January). MSAD#35 includes Marshwood High, Marshwood Middle, Great Works, Central, and Eliot Elementary. For updates, visit www.rsu35.org. North Berwick & Berwick The MSAD#60 Board of Directors approved school to begin on September 8 with a hybrid model. students who choose to do so; In-person instruction with 3-6’ social distancing in the classroom and lunchroom; Face coverings and extensive safety protocols; Some students may opt to continue with remote learning instead. The Remote Learning Program for WHS students who opt-out of in-person instruction will have a daily schedule of classes to follow from their home setting, and submit assignments online and on time. Teachers will take attendance of the distance class sessions, and absent students will need to watch the recorded ZOOM class (in Google classroom) later in the day and submit related assignments accordingly. To keep communications active, students must respond to school personnel’s phone calls/ and emails in a timely manner during the school week. Online courses may be offered through Khan Academy and PLATO. Seniors and Juniors have the opportunity for dual-enrollment with York County Community College, AP4ME through the University of Maine Fort Kent, Early College Access Program from Husson College, and UMaine. The Wells Junior High School will utilize cohort groups of roughly 16 students each. The students will stay within their group for the full school day while teachers rotate into the room to deliver each content area. To maintain distance during lunch, students will rotate through one of four indoor spaces at the junior high – the multi-purpose cafe, Ward gymnasium, band room, and chorus room. In pleasant weather, cohorts can eat outside as well. Remote learners will continue to have access to the WOCSD
Food Services Program also, and can pick up lunches daily. Wells-Ogunquit Community School District (WOCSD) includes Wells High, Wells Middle, and Wells Elementary. For updates, visit www.k12wocsd.net. Kennebunk & Kennebunkport Kennebunk schools plan to open September 8 for grades 1-12 and September 10 for pre-K and kindergarden. Using a hybrid plan called “two-day rotation blended learning,” students would receive in-person classroom instruction two days a week based on their group assignment. For example, Group A Students will receive live, on-campus instruction on Monday and Tuesday, and a combination of synchronous and asynchronous remote learning assignments Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Group B Students will receive on-campus instruction on Thursday and Friday, and the remote learning Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Some students may choose full remote learning where they will participate in synchronous and asynchronous learning activities all five days per week off campus. RSU#21 includes Kennebunk Elementary, Kennebunk High, Kennebunkport Consolidated, Middle School of the Kennebunks, Mildred L. Day, and Sea Road. For updates, visit www.rsu21.net.
York The York School Department will start the school year using a hybrid learning model. The first day for K-9 will be September 17, while the first day for grades 10-12 will be September 18. Students in grades 6-12 will be divided into two groups and alternate in-person classes for two days per week, either MondayTuesday or Thursday-Friday, rotating which group is in school in order to safely distance students. Wednesday will be a remote learning day for all students. Students in grades K-5 will return to school Monday through Friday for in-person instruction, with a half-day Wednesday using remote learning in the afternoon. During school hours, ad-
ministrators said they will be implementing controls such as distancing, temperature checks and personal protective equipment for students and staff. Teachers and staff will be donning face masks and shields during in person classes. Parents who are uncomfortable sending their children to inperson classes, or who have children with increased health risks, are able to opt into fully remote learning, which will be supported by the school with dedicated staff and lesson plans — though parents will be expected to assist remote students. York School Department includes Coastal Ridge Elementary, Village Elementary, York Middle, and York High. For updates, visit www.yorkschools.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Really cant say how much I have learned and gained confidence from you, especially since computers were unheard of when I grew up. I use spreadsheets in my work here at home. I have some on open office and excel; thinking I would like to use only one program and free is even better. Can I move everything to the one you recommend without loosing my work? How, in detail, would I do that? I use Windows 10 (buying Excel every year) on one computer and Windows 7 Home Premium (Excel 2010) on the second. Thank you, Rhonda Dear Rhonda, Yes, you can switch to using only Open Office (or Libre Office) for your spreadsheets, and it is even easier than you might think. Since OpenOffice can open excel spreadsheets, you don’t have to do any type of moving or converting. Just open the spreadsheet program in Open Office
first, then use the, “File” and “Open” menu to open your excel spreadsheets that way. If you only use these spreadsheets on your own computer and don’t have any need to send them to others, then when you save your changes, you can convert it to the native Open Office spreadsheet format. If you need to send these spreadsheets to others, I would suggest saving them in excel format (.xls) so that others will be able to open and read them in whatever program they are using. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Quick question. All my icons on my desktop are at the side. I want them at the bottom. Help! Thanks, Penny Dear Penny, If the icons you are referring to are your desktop icons, you should be able to drag each one with your mouse and move it wherever you want.
I’m guessing though, you are referring to the icons on your taskbar which can be on placed on either side, the top or bottom of your screen. You can easily fix that with the following directions: 1. Right-click on a blank spot on your taskbar and click either “Properties” or “Taskbar Settings” depending on what version of Windows you are using. 2. Find the setting for “Taskbar location on screen” and click the dropdown list to select “Bottom” 3. Click “OK” to save your changes and close the settings window, or in Windows 10, just close the window, your settings are automatically saved. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’m using Microsoft Excel. I have two questions. 1) Can Excel take a segment of time (1:35-2:00) and convert it into minutes (25)? 2) Can Excel total a column of minutes and convert that

into hours and minutes? I have learned how to add numbers in Excel and that’s about it. Please explain how to do these if they are possible. Thanks, Colleen Dear Colleen, Yes, Excel can do both of these tasks (Microsoft Excel is really a very powerful program). For your first question, you would need a column with a start time, then a column with an end time. To figure out the amount of time between the two, you would create a formula subtracting the end time from the start time. When you type the time in the start and end columns, you would type the time (8:15 for example) then a space and
either the letter a for AM or the letter p for PM. When you get to the column that would calculate the amount of time, you would create a formula something like this: =E5-D5 This formula would take the time in cell E5 (your end time) and subtract it from the time in D5 (your start time) Your second question is just as easy. All you have to do is let Excel know that you are entering units of time, and add them just like normal. Excel will automatically combine minutes into hours and minutes. Lets say you want to enter 25 minutes for your first amount of time, you would use See COMPUTERS page 17...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Amore Finds Solutions OGUNQUIT The business community has had to get creative to survive the challenges of COVID-19. Many have expanded their services to include the fresh air of outdoors, as has Amore Breakfast which now offers Amore Patio. Owner Leanne Cusimano created a patio seating area behind the restaurant at 87 Main Street, Ogunquit. Diners can enjoy take-out breakfast there until noon every day except Wednesday. A limited menu is offered at the bar, which is managed by Irishman Fiach McHugh-Hill, and opens at 4 p.m. Thursday-Sunday. Cusimano was recently inspired to expand that menu, and thought of Bobby Pizzaiolo. Now the baker’s made-to-or-
der artisan pizza is offered on Sunday evenings at the patio, fresh from his mobile wood-fired pizza oven. “His pizzas are exceptional, his set up is impressive, and it’s a unique concept!” said Cusimano excitedly. Bobby and his wife Linda have run a popular catering business, booked for private events such as family reunions and corporate parties, but this year nearly all events were cancelled. His availability created an opportunity for this collaboration which has been enthusiastically received by locals and hotel guests alike. “Leanne has a knack for food and tying things that work together. She has an artistic eye for what folks want and puts her heart into it. This is a win-win all

Mornings in Paris Helps Guide Staples & Others KENNEBUNK When Mornings in Paris re-opened May 1, business was anything but usual. In a matter of weeks, COVID-19 changed the world and how locals conduct business: One-way entrance and exit. Plexiglass shields. Clear signage and line arrows. New seating layout. Face coverings for staff and customers. Credit cards only, no cash. No shared cream and sugar containers. Scheduled, regular sanitizing throughout the day. Cafe owner Paul Humphrey explained all these changes in a Facebook video, through a mask, walking through the shop so customers would know what to expect when ordering their favorite Nutella cappuccino or macaron the next day. Through the power of social media, a Staples executive living locally took notice and contacted Humphrey and his wife Katelyn. “We had very positive feedback about the new measures in place along with plenty of reviews and views of the video. The next day we were contacted by someone at Staples head office, who asked to discuss our

Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Burger is looking for his forever family! While Burger is only eight months old, he is already almost 70 lbs! This big boy is a huge fan of quiet places where he can romp, sniff, and roll in the grass. He loves the woods and would make a great hiking companion. He is not a fan of city living at this time as the sights and sounds of the concrete jungle are overwhelming for this southern outdoorsman. Burger thrives on structure and boundaries. He is incredibly intelligent and would benefit from strong leadership and training. Burger is house trained, crate trained, and know the commands “sit”, “watch me”, and “off”. He is eager to please and learns new skills very quickly. He enjoys the company of people and other dogs, and loves tennis balls, nylabones, and peanut butter kongs. He is very sweet boy with a lot of love to give. For more information about sweet Burger Bean, contact Renee at RMackK9XL@gmail.com.

Elliston, who serves as the Credit Administration Manager for the Bank, is the program’s 52nd employee to choose a non-profit or charity of their choice to receive $500. She chose the AWS because of her own personal experience adopting. “I adopted two dogs from AWS five years ago,” she said. “They were the best dogs ever, but unfortunately they passed of old age. I will be forever grateful to AWS and the passion they have for placing animals into their forever home.” The AWS was founded in 1967, operating on a 40-acre campus in Kennebunk, with satellite adoption centers throughout northern New England. The center is staffed by more than 40

Great Works Regional Land Trust Welcomes New Executive Director OGUNQUIT This January, Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) Board of Directors and staff had the pleasure of welcoming its new Executive Director, Danielle Olsen. Danielle comes to GWRLT from Pennsylvania, where she served as the statewide Director of Watershed Planning for a small nonprofit, and brings experience in land protection, conservation planning, and community engagement. Born and raised in forested north-central Pennsylvania, Danielle moved to Washington state for graduate school to pursue environmental land use planning and worked as a conservation planner across Washington and in northern Idaho before returning east. Her past experiences have given her a deep understanding of the need to protect land for the health of a watershed and the wellbeing of communities and future generations. She is eager to continue her conservation work here in Maine where she has settled with her partner Max and their son Leo. The board of directors is excited to have Danielle join GWRLT as the first Executive Director, hoping to continue the organization’s success in land conservation. They have also welcomed two new Board members this year, Sandy Agrafiotis and Leigh Peake. Sandy helped found the land trust in 1987, served previously on the Board, and has played a significant role in land protection in the Tatnic region. Leigh brings expertise in environmental education as the
Chief Education Officer for Gulf of Maine Research Institute. Both live in South Berwick. With these excellent additions, GWRLT will continue its land conservation efforts, focusing now more than ever on public access and outreach opportunities. With the leadership of the new Executive Director, the land trust has been able to keep its preserves open during the COVID19 pandemic, providing trail use guidance based upon the latest health recommendations to ensure the safety of visitors. The board and staff of GWRLT look forward to continuing to provide recreational opportunities for the community while protecting the land for generations to come. Great Works Regional Land Trust serves the six towns of Ogunquit, Wells, North Berwick, Berwick, South Berwick, and Eliot. Its main headquarters are located at Beach Plum Farm Preserve in Ogunquit – a 22-acre donated salt-water farm with an active community garden for community members and a small trail leading to the water. ‘Non-Profit A Day in May’ Impacts 31 Non-Profits YORK COUNTY On June 1, Town & Country Federal Credit Union announced the final recipient of its ‘Non-Profit A Day in the month of May’ initiative, a piece of its ‘Local Helping Local’ initiative that was established in response to the economic impact from the pandemic. During May, the credit union asked for visitors to its Facebook page to highlight a non-profit in Cumberland and York counties. Each day, the credit union randomly selected a non-profit and made a $100 contribution to that non-profit. In total, 31 non-profits that serve Cumberland and/or York
Counties shared in contributions adding up to $3,100. Jennifer Hutchins, Executive Director of the Maine Association of Non-Profits, said the support and awareness comes at a critical time. “As many nonprofits grapple with the competing demands of increasing community needs and the safety of employees and volunteers, new sources of financial support like this program are critical. Highlighting the unique role and value of our nonprofits is key to forging effective partnerships that will determine Maine’s path forward out of the crisis. We appreciate Town & Country spot-
lighting the significant financial challenges facing non-profits at this time, and for making contributions that have a positive impact on our communities right now.” According to the credit union, hundreds of non-profits were highlighted during the month, and appreciation from recipients poured in. Kittery-based A House for ME, which provides housing for adults with disabilities in York County, remarked, “From all of us at A House for ME, thank you!” Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Southern Maine added, “Thank you for your commitment and generosity.”

A talented student-athlete, Sydney will be remembered at Traip Academy as a kind and compassionate friend who always kept an eye out for someone who may
be feeling isolated and alone. She was a valuable member of the schools Student-2-Student organization, a group whose purpose is to ensure that all students have someone in their corner. She will study in the fall at The College of Wooster in Ohio. The Rotary Club of Kittery 2020 scholarships totaled $2,500. The Club meets weekly on Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Kittery Estates (although recent meetings are being conducted remotely). Visitors are always welcome.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Maple Syrup Producers Eligible for Financial Relief WASHINGTON, DC Following a push by Maine’s Congressional Delegation and Governor Janet Mills, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that producers of maple sap used to make maple syrup are now eligible for direct financial relief to help offset the financial harm they have experienced due to COVID-19.
In June, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden sent a letter to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue in support of maple syrup producers’ eligibility for direct relief from the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP). CFAP, created through the CARES Act, is providing up to $16 billion in direct payments

One of which is an old Dell Latitude C400 running Windows XP Pro SP3. The main issue I have with this unit is that all the windows and icons extend far beyond the screen. And the only menu offers at the to left corner is “Move or Close”. I cannot resize anything since all the settings, like DPI and monitor will not allow me to change anything, as the settings are all shaded out, even in Safe Mode. There was one time that everything went down in size, and that was re-installing the video driver, but then the moment the unit was rebooted, all the windows and icons are way too large again. The screen is 12”, yet it displays everything like it should be a 22” monitor, if not larger. And with the windows so overblown out of proportion to the screen, I cannot access all of the windows, especially when there is no scroll bar and the movement stops when I run out of screen. I sincerely hope you can help me get things straightened
away on this unit, as I cannot access anything until I can see what I am doing. Thanks in advance for your help and looking forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Renee Dear Renee, It sounds like you might be able to fix this problem using the settings on your monitor instead of the settings in Windows. What you need to do, is find the adjustment buttons on the monitor itself. Most monitors have an “Auto” or “Auto Adjust” button. Press that and the monitor will sense the signal coming in and adjust itself so that the picture is centered on the screen and sized correctly. If that doesn’t work, use the other buttons on the monitor to manually adjust the size of the image on your screen. I can’t tell you exactly how to do this since it is different for each model of monitor, but look for the button that brings up a menu on the screen, and then use the adjustment buttons to navigate through that menu, select the settings you want to change, and then make the adjustments. If you get stuck, try to find the manual that came with the monitor, or look up the model of the monitor online, and you can usually find a PDF version of the manual on the manufacturers website. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth.boston@ gmail.com.
to deliver relief to America’s farmers. In the letter, the Delegation also noted their full support of a letter previously sent by Governor Mills, which outlined the necessity of this relief for the Maine maple syrup industry. “Maine is proud to be the country’s third-largest producer of maple syrup. This is a strong sector of our state’s agricultural economy, representing more than 800 full- and part-time jobs,” said Senators Collins and King and Representatives Pingree and Golden. “Maine maple syrup producers experienced substantial revenue losses due to the cancellation of Maple Sunday events this spring. We strongly supported making maple syrup producers eligible for assistance through CFAP, and we are pleased that they will now be able to access this lifeline for farmers.” “Like many pillars of our economy, Maine’s maple syrup producers have suffered un-
Recovery Grant Deadline STATEWIDE The state of Maine has announced the Maine Economic Recovery Grant Program, providing financial relief to small businesses and nonprofits in Maine. Businesses with 50 employees or fewer are eligible to apply. The application deadline is September 9. precedented financial hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic. I am pleased to hear that the USDA heeded our call and that our maple syrup producers can now access the resources they need to survive these challenging times,” said Governor Janet Mills. “I hope to see continued changes to the CFAP program to ensure that more Maine farms, of all sizes, whose financial stability and futures have similarly been disrupted, benefit from this important program.” Maine is home to more than 550 maple syrup producers whose combined output totaled 580,000 gallons with a value of $21.6 million last year alone. Similar to other agricultural producers across the country, maple syrup producers in the State of Maine have suffered greatly due
to COVID-19. The impact on this industry is even more acute than most, however, given its short season from late February to mid-April and heavy reliance on direct-toconsumer sales. Every March, sugarhouses across Maine host Maple Sunday events, an annual celebration showcasing maple syrup operations throughout Maine that serves as a catalyst for sales. Due to the pandemic, this collection of events was effectively cancelled this year, eliminating many producers’ best opportunity to connect with consumers and secure sales. More information about CFAP and the application process can be found on the USDA’s resource page ay www.farmers.gov/cfap.

Alzheimer’s Association Invites Mainers to Join 2020 Walk to Help End Alzheimers STATEWIDE The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting everyone in Maine to join the fight to end Alzheimers by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. This year’s walk will take place across the state with people in the Maine beaches, lakes, and mountains area, taking part on Saturday, September 12. “This year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be everywhere,” said Wendy Vizek, vice president, constituent events at the Alzheimer’s Association. “The pandemic is changing how we walk, but it doesn’t
change the need to walk. This year, more than ever, we need to come together to support all those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia. With the dollars raised, the Alzheimer’s Association can continue to provide care and support to families during these difficult times while also advancing critical research toward methods of treatment and prevention.” Time-honored components of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s are being replicated. On walk day, an opening ceremony will feature local speakers and a presentation of Promise Flowers to honor the personal reasons people join together to fight Al-

A small group of Alzheimer’s Association staff and volunteers will create the iconic Promise Garden in a “view only” format on walk day to honor all those impacted by Alzheimer’s. To enhance the experience leading up to the event and on walk day, new features are being added to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s mobile app to create an opportunity for the community to connect. Participants can use the app and new “Walk Mainstage’’ to track their steps and distance, follow a virtual walk path,
manage their Facebook fundraisers, and access information and resources from the association and walk sponsors to help those affected by the disease. A new audio track will be available to encourage participants along the way and to congratulate them when they are finished walking. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 16 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Maine alone, there are more than 28,000 people living
with the disease and 69,000 unpaid caregivers. To register and receive the latest updates on this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, visit www.alz.org/maine/walk. The Alzheimer’s Association is a worldwide voluntary health organization dedicated to Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Free Transition Training for Women Veterans NATIONWIDE The Veteran Affairs’ Women’s Health Transition Training program is available virtually twice a day through mid-December. The schedule allows more women to attend than in the past. All transitioning servicewomen are encouraged to register for a virtual training session at: www. va.gov/womenvet/whtt. Program managers will soon determine the training schedule and delivery method (virtual or in-person) for calendar year 2021. More than 1,100 women have completed the training since its inception in the summer of 2018. Many have shared positive feedback and takeaways from the training. Past attendees have said that hearing about women-specific care — including mental health and counseling — offered by
VA persuaded them to enroll. This program focuses on educating servicewomen on the services VA offers. It addresses potential physical and mental health challenges they may face. Examples are depression, musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain, obesity, infertility, prenatal care or MST. This live, interactive training is led by a woman Veteran who uses VA health care. The training session has five phases: Phase 1 – The Shift from Active Duty. You will learn about VHA (Veterans Health Administration), the transition from active duty or Guard/Reserve to civilian, and making the change from the military health system to VHA. Phase 2 – Understanding the VHA. You will learn ...TRAIL from page 7 the funds are now available to complete this project. This trail will give access to anyone with a mobility issue to enjoy our beautiful Hope Woods in the heart of Kennebunk. An ADA compliant parking lot will also be installed at the trailhead (behind Hope Cemetery). From there, the trail will lend itself to allow for a wide range of user skills and abilities. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-August with a projected completion date in the middle of October. Visitor use of the trails in Hope Woods will be impacted during construction, but every effort will be made to have the majority of the trails open. Signs will be posted at all entrances-updated as needed-to indicate which trails are open.

You will hear about the health services available to you if you enroll in VA health care. Phase 4 – Enrolling in VA. You will learn about eligibility and the enrollment process. Phase 5 – Transition Assistance. You will learn about other available support services and partners as you transition out of active duty. Health & Fitness Tips for Parents Talking to Kids About Returning to School Back-to-school season, usually a time of fresh starts and new beginnings, is bringing more of the same in 2020: anxiety, uncertainty, and chaos. As schools across the globe grapple with the challenges of reopening and balancing in-person and remote learning, it seems that there is a lot more to prep for this year. Brainly, the world’s largest online learning and homework help community, offers a few sage tips to help parents and students prepare. Talk to your child about how this school year will be different. Be upfront about the situation and empower your child to make smart choices and do their part to help stop the spread. Things like handwashing, social distancing etiquette, and mask-wearing should be discussed. Having an open conversation and presenting all the facts will make both you and your child feel less anxious. Create a learning command center. Spend some time creating a space in your home for your child to study or do homework. If you don’t have a spare area, or if you have multiple children who want to work together, create a way to store school supplies in a cart or container that’s portable and can be used at the kitchen table or anywhere. Build excitement and inspire positivity. While getting mentally prepared for this backto-school season may be a particularly tough assignment for many people, it still deserves to be celebrated. Consider having a back-to-school themed TV marathon, creating an end-ofsummer countdown with construction paper loops, or planning out a special breakfast for the first day. Make face masks fun (and familiar). For those returning to in-person classes, have a mask for every day for your child, and make sure they like the mask and feel comfortable wearing it for extended periods of time. Cloth face masks come in countless patterns and colors, and kids can use them to express their personal style while staying safe. Pro tip: it’s also smart to make sure kids have an extra mask in a plastic baggie every day just in case something happens to the first one. Tech tools to enhance learning. Students who are starting out the first part of their fall semester online may find them-
selves needing some extra help on assignments, and luckily there are plenty of safe online resources they can utilize. Brainly is a social online learning and homework help community that brings all the benefits of in-person study groups into a digital format. Dictionary.com is perfect for students needing to look up definitions for vocabulary words, synonyms or antonyms, as well as wanting to expand their personal word bank with a word of the day. myHomework Student Planner is a digital resource where students can input due dates of assignments, homework deadlines, and reminders for almost anything under the sun to help them stay on top of their work and feel confident in class. $2.6M Towards Health Professionals’ Response to COVID WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that Maine has been awarded $2,681,866 to support the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding was awarded through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID). “The unprecedented public health crisis facing our nation requires a robust response in order to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This funding will assist Maine’s efforts to expand testing capacity, improve contact tracing, and enhance containment efforts, helping to protect the health and safety of Mainers and those working on the front lines.” In cooperation with the
CDC, Maine will use this funding to carry out surveillance, epidemiology, laboratory capacity, infection control, mitigation,
communications, and other preparedness and response activities. For more information, visit www.coronavirus.gov.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

...SKOGSBERG from page 23 Francisco, CA. During his time with Honeywell he traveled to India to establish computer systems. After leaving Honeywell Cliff went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, rebuilding and repairing gyroscopes in submarines. In 1992, he married the love of his life, Kathleen Shapleigh, and became a wonderful stepfather to her children, as well as a truly amazing “Morfar” to his grandchildren. He also gained 5 brothers and 4 sisters in-law when he married Kathy, and while it was an adjustment for him to join such a large family he was beloved by all and considered a saint by many. Cliff was very active and loved fishing, boating, golfing, gardening, and tennis. He truly loved spending time with his grandchildren and always took the time to point out interesting birds and insects, patiently sharing his love of nature. He is survived by his loving family: wife Kathy of Eliot; step-daughters Anne Marley and husband Steven of Eliot, Danielle Cosenza and husband James of Eliot; nieces Virginia Carr of Fullerton, CA, and Marilyn Bostrom of St. Charles, IL; nephew David Holty of New Berlin, WI; and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Gladys Holty. A private family service was held graveside at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, on Friday, August 28. Arrangements were made by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home from York.

Senator Collins Urges Navy to Review Staffing for Federal Firefighters, Including at PNSY WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins wrote to U.S. Navy Secretary Kenneth Braithwaite and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael Gilday regarding current minimum staffing levels for federal firefighters at Navy installations in light of the recent fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard, which now appears to be the worst in-port disaster since the USS Miami fire at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) just eight years ago. “As the Navy investigates the Bonhomme Richard incident, I ask that you carefully review the risks and impacts of reduced staffing at federal fire departments. In the case of the USS Miami, the 2012 fire caused $700 million in damage and ultimately resulted in the Navy scrapping the entire Los-Angeles-class submarine rather than attempting to repair it,” said Senator Collins. “Certainly, in many cases minimal
costs of risk reduction or full staffing can help to prevent and contain potentially catastrophic fires. Of note, following the USS Miami fire at PNSY, minimum fire department staffing at the shipyard was increased from 13 to 15 on-duty personnel.” “As is the case with many federal fire departments, the department at PNSY often serves as first responders within the local area, protecting both the Navy’s submarines and property but also supporting Kittery and other nearby towns,” Senator Collins continued. “As a co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I know the importance of firefighters in Maine and have worked to ensure they have all of the support they need to protect our communities. This has become all the more important as Maine and the rest of the country continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic.” Earlier this year, com-
manding officers and Navy Region Fire chiefs were directed to take actions to reduce labor costs of the fire and emergency services program, to include reduced staffing of fire departments based on assessments of risk. For PNSY in Maine, this has meant that the fire department has operated with 13 personnel during “offpeak” times, rather than the typical 15 firefighters on-duty. As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense and a Co-Chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, Senator Collins has been a longstanding advocate for Maine’s first responders, fighting hard to ensure they have the resources and support necessary to protect lives and property. She recently helped to secure more than $1.3 million for Maine Fire Departments to upgrade personal protective equipment and expand personnel amid COVID-19.
James “Jim” E. Thompson, 70 NORTH BERWICK – James E. Thompson died peacefully at his home on August 15, 2020, following a brief illness. He was born on March 17, 1950 to Roger and Lela (Dunham) Thompson, and was a graduate of North Berwick High School and McIntosh College in Dover, NH. He served in the Army Reserves from 1970 to 1976. Jim was a past Master of the Yorkshire Lodge #179 AF & AM of North Berwick and was involved in the Scottish Rite and Kora Temple Shrine as well. In 1980, Jim married Sylvia (Scott) Thompson. He built their forever home in North Berwick in 1984 and soon afterwards, they started their family. His favorite memories include visiting the White Mountains every summer, traveling to Disney World and Foxwoods Casino, and going to the local fairs in the fall. Jim was a talented and dedicated worker, employed for a number of years as a draftsman at Hussey Seating and was a longtime fixture for MSAD 60, working for various Noble schools throughout his career. He is predeceased by his wife of 29 years, Sylvia Thompson, and his brother Steven Thompson. He is survived by his two sons, Scott of Dallas, TX, and Michael of North Berwick; daughter Christa and son-in-law Jack Stowell of Somersworth, NH; brother Bruce Thompson and wife Shirley of North Berwick; sister June Johnson and husband Brad of North Berwick; sister-in-law Barbara Thompson of Laconia, NH; two grandchildren, Brady and Aria Stowell; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and two very special friends, Richard and Jean Noel. Jim was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, co-worker, and friend. He was so proud to become a grandfather in 2017, and “Grampy” soon became his favorite nickname. He always looked forward to spending time with his grandkids every Sunday, and Christmas with his family while all his kids were “home”. Most days you would see him outside on his tractor. Jim was known to have a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face. He was so loved by everyone, and we will miss him dearly.
Private graveside services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island #300, Topsham, ME 04086. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick, where condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. • • • • • • • • • •
Timothy H. Wright, 59 YORK – Timothy H. Wright passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital with his loving girlfriend, Denise, by his side. Tim was born on May 2, 1961 in Portsmouth, NH. On the evening of August 25, Tim, Denise, her sister Andrea, and Tim’s son Adam, were able to watch a Red Sox game together in his hospital room. Traditionally, during the football season on Sundays, Tim would whip up his signature chili, amongst other goodies to eat during the game. Those Sunday games were always fun and exuberantly loud! Both Tim and Denise were Harley Davidson enthusiasts. Some of their best memories were of participating in motorcycle charity rides. Tim was predeceased by his mother Ebba Borgkivist and father Felix Wright. Gamache Invited (Again!) to Boston Hockey Night YORK With these uncertain times for high school sports, staying fit and preparing is still very important to athletes of all ages especially for one young man who is keeping his love for hockey alive. Bryce Gamache is a junior at York High School and was invited to participate in the 2020 Hockey Night in Boston Showcase. The showcase has been taking place for over 40 years and is considered by many colleges and junior programs as one of the major recruiting events. In fact, over 250 HNIB graduates are now college players and over 50 former HNIB players have worn NHL/AHL jerseys! This was Bryce’s second year to be invited to take part in the event but due to the pandemic, things were up in the air with when and how things could move forward. Luckily, the North/Northeast Tournament did take place July 7-9 in Haverhill, MA. From this tournament, select players were invited to participate in the 2020 Major Showcase with players from all over New England and Bryce was chosen! During the event, Bryce went in as a defense player yet was asked to play offense too.
He played in six games and since playing at the tournament he received several emails and phone calls from recruiters. Bryce is

KENNEBUNKPORT Things tend to come full circle in life. For over 36 years George Giggey has kept his 30-foot Catalina sailboat at the Yachtsman Marina in Kennebunkport. The vessel is his pride and joy and he spends every summer weekend at the marina, sailing, tinkering on his boats, and fishing. He’s regularly joined by his family and his grandson, Ryan Giggey, a junior at Merrimack College, who can’t remember a summer where he wasn’t spending time on the docks and assisting his grandfather on his boats. As soon as spring would hit, Ryan’s family would make their weekly trek up from Andover, MA, to the marina to sail with his grandfather. Through those visits, Ryan learned to love the water. He cherished his Maine coast adventures, learning to boat and fish and has some pretty special memories of his summers there – meeting President George H. Bush, and then President George W. Bush a few years later and pictures on the docks with secret service men and navy seals. But his most cherished memories are the ones spent with his grandfather – the first time he took the helm, the big striper fish they caught, learning to tie knots, how to navigate out on open water, and so many more. brought on each season and the last to leave. Now, at the age of 21, he has taken on the role of Dockmaster at the Yachtsman and there is no other job Ryan would rather have. In his role, he collaborates with Operations Manager Shawn Dumas and Marina Manager Cathy Norton to ensure all customer needs are met. Throughout the summer, he oversees 10-12 dockhands who provide concierge service to the marina’s customers – from boat cleaning and fueling to coordinating repair and maintenance needs. “Today I walk those docks with a different purpose,” Ryan explained. “Instead of just being at the marina to go boating, I am there to help others,” he noted. “I remember when I first got hired and a customer was on the docks with his son and grandchildren. The kids were just 5 or 6 years old and they reeled in a decentsized fish right by their boat. The look on the grandson’s face as he and his grandfather took photos together reminded me of all the memories I have at the marina with my grandfather,” he reminisced. “I love that I can help our customers create amazing memories like those.”
Please take notice that Doughty Falls Memorial Company, 26B Staples Drive, North Berwick, Maine 03906, (207) 676-9955), intends to file an Air Emission License application with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) pursuant to the provisions of 38 M.R.S.A., Section 590 on September 3, 2020.
