Breast Care Center Honors Girls Basketball Program WELLS In recognition of the unrivaled efforts of Wells Girls’ Basketball Program, York Hospital will dedicate the renovated Wells Breast Care Center, 112 Sanford Road, Building B, Second floor, in their honor on September 12 at 2 p.m. Over ten years, these girls have raised $270,790 for the Hospital’s Breast Cancer and Living Well With Cancer Funds — supporting services such as emergency gas and food cards, nutritional and exercise programs, wigs, head covers and prosthetics, integrative therapies like massage, Reiki and Acupuncture and others that center on the mind, body and well-being of patients.

Guest speaker at the ceremony will be Lani (Boardman) Silversides. Lani lives in York and understands the important role that sports, and basketball in particular, can have in girls’ lives. Her reputation precedes her, as
second all-time leading basketball scorer (male or female) with several York High School records, and the Maine Female Athlete of 2001. Lani followed those achievements as a 2005 graduate and four-year basketball player
at The University of Vermont, one of seven players in their history to score over 1,000 points, grab 500 rebounds and hand out 200 assists. In 2013, she topped off honors on the America East All-Championship squad with induction into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. A Certified Sports Psychology Coach, with a Master of Science in Teaching from UNH, Silversides currently teaches and coaches at Phillips Academy Andover in the Dept. of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Outside of school, Lani started her own business, Mindful Performance, LLC, and works to create resources and program-
ming for young girls to empower and inspire them to play sports and be physically active. After self-publishing a baby book “My Strong is Beautiful in 2015”, she is the author of “A Strong Girls’ Guide to Being” coming this fall. In 2018, after a diagnosis of stagethree breast cancer, Lani made it her mission to help others by writing the daily column, “The Bright Side”. To celebrate this notable occasion, raffle prizes, along with appetizers, desserts and refreshments served by York Hospital’s Dining & Nutrition team, will be offered. He went there twice in 2018 as a Polar History Lecturer on adventure cruise ships, and will return again in November 2019. In this presentation Webster recounts the historic voyages and eventual discovery of Antartica by 18th, 19th, and 20th century explorers. ~ Library News ~ Berwick Public Library Discovering Your Civil War Ancestors with Clay Feeter
Expand your personal stories of family members who fought in the Civil War with help from researcher Clay Feeter on Tuesday, September 10, 6 p.m. Even if all your genealogy says is “Killed in the War of the Rebellion,” you will learn how to get those sometimes dry and hard-tounderstand facts to jump off the pages - to enrich your family history and get the basics on how to put it down in easy-to-understand ways for yourself and your grandkids. Feeter, of York, has performed more than 4,600 Civil War ancestor searches over the past 20 years. His goal is to bring not just your soldierancestor’s stories to life, but to help you understand and discover more details about the full picture of suffering and challenges that the Civil War brought with it. Feeter notes that prior to the talk, you will want to search your genealogy books and records; most Civil War-age men were born between 1815-1847.

KENNEBUNKPORT Starting on September 1, Kennebunkport will be suspending curbside recycling collection due to market conditions. As of this date, curbside recycling will no longer be picked up. Recycling should now be taken to the Kennebunk Recycling Center at 36 Sea Road in Kennebunk. Direct costs for recycling will be charged at drop off – a minimum of $5 for a 18-gallon, blue recycling bin or $10 for a 40-gallon container (large trash barrel). Cardboard can be brought to the containers at Bradbury’s Market and in the Dock Square parking lot (which allows for 30-minute free parking). The current suspension will continue until further notice. The Town of Kennebunkport will evaluate curbside recycling and market changes as part of the budget planning for fiscal year 2021. Strater had gifted 149 pages of documents to the School after Hemingway’s death in 1961. Strater and Hemingway became friends while they were both living in Paris in the 1920’s becoming members of the Lost Generation. They bonded over boxing and a love for deep-sea fishing. It was the latter that also ended their friendship on a fateful fishing trip off Bimini in 1935. Aspects of this trip are what The Old Man and The Sea is based on. Saturday’s celebration culminates in the Chalk Block Party that will include a beer tent sponsored by Batson River Brewery, live music by The Dock Squares and Northern Charm, carnival games and prizes, food court, ice cream sundaes, and campfire s’mores. The literal highlight of the evening will be the luminaries at dusk. They will light the way to the finished chalk art which can be enjoyed to the twinkling lights and full moon.

Funding Received to Prevent Youth Homelessness Maine Senator Susan Collins announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded Maine a two-year, $3.35 million dollar grant to end and prevent youth homelessness. The grant will support the creation of a Coordinated Community Response (CCR) to end
and prevent youth homelessness. The CCR will identify the strengths, gaps and challenges to the existing youth homelessness response system and recommend strategies to improve the system and outcomes for youth experiencing homelessness up to age 24. Since Maine has been identified as a rural community, there will be an emphasis on improved and

increased access to services specific to youth experiencing homelessness in rural communities. Maine is one of only a few rural communities to receive this funding. “We are excited about receiving this grant and the opportunities it presents for Maine’s youth,” says Chris Bicknell, Executive Director of New Beginnings, the agency that will lead this Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP). “The partnerships this will create – and the voice that it will give youth who have been or who are homeless – is truly what we need to prevent and respond to youth homelessness.” Funding will be allocated through MaineHousing. “We know that youth homelessness is a significant issue in Maine and we’re grateful our state is receiving funding to address it,” says Daniel Brennan, Director of MaineHousing. “We are proud to work with our partners to invest our time, resources,
and innovation to prevent a challenge that impacts so many of Maine’s youth.” New Beginnings will convene a leadership team of cross-sector experts from MaineHousing, the Maine Department of Corrections, the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, local municipalities, and nonprofit youth serving agencies to create the
CCR. New Beginnings will also ensure that youth with lived experience in homelessness have a voice in all decisions regarding the work of the CCR. After the CCR is created, non-profit, faith-based, and government agencies will have an opportunity to apply for subgrants to create new and innovative programs to end and prevent youth homelessness.

Electric Vehicle Rebate Program Standing in front of a suite of electric vehicles and joined by Efficiency Maine Trust and participating automobile dealers at Brunswick Landing, Governor Janet Mills announced the launch of the Electric Vehicle (EV) Accelerator Program to provide electric vehicle rebates for Maine residents. “Maine people shell out five billion dollars a year to outof-state fossil fuel companies, and a lot of that money is spent on gas for vehicles that just becomes carbon dioxide pumped into our atmosphere. We can do better. It is time to usher in the next generation of technologies that will move our state towards a renewable future,” said Governor Mills. “This in...HOUSE from page 12 rating my garden, and climb with hammer in hand to undo what the weather decided to do. Today, I find myself wondering whom I could hire to do a job I am no longer able or willing to complete. The thought of me lying on my back implanted into the frozen ground seemed too much of a reality. I started to come to the realization I may have grown older than my home in that it still stood strong while I lost the capacity to fix it. For the past few years there have been other instances foreshadowing my incapacity to play the part of the custodian for my home. I have a large garden of which I’m very proud. Every spring before Memorial Day Weekend I travel to my favorite hardware box store in order to buy the supplies necessary to make my garden the envy of the neighborhood. Some of these items include at least 16 backs of garden soil. A few years back I would only buy the large bags at which time I would carry them off to my truck and lift each one of them into the bed making sure the weight was evenly distributed over the axel. Last spring. I bought the same number of bags but decided on using the smaller ones. This allowed me to be able to lift them into my truck. While I was carrying them out a young man from the store ran into the parking lot to see if I needed some help. In past years I would thank him for his efforts and state I was fine. Last spring I simply thanked him. I’ve mowed my own lawn for the past 53 years of my life. At first I was responsible for cutting my parents lawn and See OLD page 16...
itiative is a critical step in that direction. By increasing our use of electric vehicles, Maine is making substantial and meaningful progress in transitioning us away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources, which will help slash carbon emissions, combat climate change, and save Maine people money. I am glad to see this funding I won as Attorney General put to good use for Maine people.” In 2017, then-Attorney General Mills won through a settlement more than $5.1 million for the state after taking legal action against Volkswagen and its affiliates Audi AG and Porsche AG for violating state environmental laws and emissions through their marketing and sales of light vehicles in Maine. The EV Accelerator Program will use those settlement funds to provide $1,000-2,000 rebates on qualifying plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. It also offers enhanced rebates for low-income households and for governmental and tribal government entities. “We’re excited to be offering a program that will make it more accessible for Mainers to not only save at the pump, but to get into an extremely fun ride that is also kind to the climate. This is what the future of driving in Maine looks like,” said Michael Stoddard, Executive Director of Efficiency Maine Trust. The program will help Maine reach its long-range carbon reduction requirements in the transportation sector – Maine’s largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Efficiency Maine’s EV Accelerator will also help
lower the energy and maintenance costs of Maine vehicle fleet operators and Maine drivers, and facilitate a market transformation that will, over time, result in Maine drivers shifting from vehicles that consume high-price, high-carbon fuels to vehicles that operate on electricity. The EV Accelerator program is offered as an instant rebate for Maine customers – simply go to a participating car dealer. Program details, the list of eligible vehicles, and participating dealers, are available at www. efficiencymaine.com.

County. The horse, which was not vaccinated against the disease, was euthanized. This is the first case of a horse contracting EEE in Maine since 2013. EEE is a virus that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. “EEE, which is carried by mosquitoes, is a fatal, viral disease in horses. The virus can affect human beings if they are bitten by mosquitoes that carry the virus,” said Dr. Michele Walsh, Maine State Veterinarian. “People cannot acquire EEE infection from sick animals, only from the bite of an infected mosquito.” “This positive result confirms that mosquitoes carrying the virus are present in Maine, which is the reason why Maine CDC urges the state’s residents and visitors to take precautions to protect themselves and their animals from mosquito bites,”said Nirav D. Shah, Director of Maine CDC. Public health officials in other northeastern states have

seen evidence of a very active season for EEE and some evidence of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus (WNV), another mosquito-borne illness. There have been no confirmed cases of EEE or WNV in humans in Maine this year. The last case of EEE involving a human in Maine was in 2015. Maine CDC advises residents and visitors to protect themselves, their children, and animals by minimizing outdoor activity from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. If outdoor activity is unavoidable, take personal precautions to prevent mosquito bites, including: Use an EPA-approved repellent; Wear longsleeved shirts and pants; Treat clothing and gear with Permethrin; Take steps to control mosquitoes around your property by emptying artificial sources of standing water, fixing holes in screens, and working with a pesticide control applicator. Human infection with EEE virus can cause serious illness affecting the brain. Some persons infected with EEE have no obvious symptoms. In those persons who do develop illness, symptoms – which typically appear between three and 10 days after a bite – range from mild flu-like illness to high fever, headache, stiff neck, and decreased consciousness. Approximately one in every three individuals who are infected with EEE die and many of those who recover experience lasting health problems. Individuals with symptoms suggestive of EEE infection should contact their physician immediately. No human vaccine against EEE and WNV infection is available. There is no specific antiviral treatment for EEE or WNV infections. For more information about EEE and WNV prevention, visit www.cdc.gov. ...DINNER from page 2 dining hall, cleaning up, spreading the word, and donating the proceeds to groups and people in the community. Health & Fitness Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month MAINE September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer( www.mcfpc. org) strives to alert Maine men about prostate cancer and the importance of screening. In the United States over 65% of women who are 40 or older have appropriate mammograms to screen for breast cancer and every year there are organizations that offer women free mammograms. It is nearly impossible to find the statistics to see what per cent of men over the age of 40 (or 50) have prostate cancer screenings but it is certainly far, far lower than women’s rates and we almost never see free screenings offered. Why is there such a vast difference between information and activism about breast cancer versus prostate cancer? There are many answers including the fact that women have been advocating since the See CANCER page 16...

...CANCER from page 15 1970’s and men too often for a variety of reasons have not been as attentive to their health care as women. In fact it is often the wife, sister or mother who urges men to speak to their doctor about screening, a simple, inexpensive blood test. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons, over the last two years, the number of men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States has
been rising. “It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that in 2019 there will be about 174,650 men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer which is a 6% increase from 2018. There will also be an estimated 31,620 deaths from prostate cancer in 2019, a 7% increase from 2018.” And while it is true that about 60% of the men diagnosed are 60 or older, that means about 40% are younger, with some in
their 40’s and risk depends on a number of different factors. In Maine, the Coalition, a statewide all volunteer non profit, has information on its’ website as well as links to Maine Cancer Centers, and support groups. It offers a Confidential One-2-One telephone line for men who have questions but may not feel comfortable seeking answers in a support group. (1-855 552-7200 x 801). And,
when grant funds have been available, the organization has scheduled free screenings.

...OLD from page 12 when I purchased my first home I was proud to head out into my newly acquired yard with my newly purchased second hand mower. After a short 45 minutes it was obvious I owned the most manicured lawn of my neighborhood. A few years ago after spending most of my afternoon on my rider lawnmower it decided to quit. I didn’t make the decision; the mower did by exhausting its final gasp in a very thick and sulfur-filled cloud. I then took out my regular mower to finish the job but it too decided to make its last sound by literally blowing out its spark plug through a neighbor’s window. After multiple apologies I called the local landscaping company and decided to never
touch a cut blade of grass again. I thought it was God’s will. My wife keeps the inside of our home immaculate. I try to do the same with the outside by keeping the paint new and clean. I also try and make sure our deck looks as though no one ever stepped on its boards. For the past few years this has become a difficult task. In fact, the last time I attempted to paint the window trim as soon as I completed one window and went on to the next the first looked as though it aged before my eyes. I blamed the paint but in reality it had to be me. As the years passed I left more paint on the siding of the house and the glass of the windows. The deck also grew old sucking up more paint than my favorite box store could carry.
My tools grew as old and obsolete as me. All of my neighbors have equipment that are not only electronically operated but need a master’s degree in engineering to operate. When they watch me pull out a hammer or hand driven screwdriver they turn and smirk wondering how and when I became so old. I am coming to the realization I may have grown older than my home. Delaney, Amy (Weightman) Marble, Emily (Weightman) Land, Derek Littlefield, Connor Littlefield, Mikaela Littlefield, Kira Littlefield, Brian Cook, Alan Cook, Samuel Cook, Lucille Cook; two precious great granddaughters: Grace Marble and Sabrina Turner; as well as many nieces and nephews. Margaret was an active member of the South Berwick community, including Our Lady of the Angels Parish and the South Berwick Public Library. She was a devout
Christian, a generous woman who had a wonderful sense of humor, never met a stranger, and was very much loved. Margaret was an independent lady who loved to shop and enjoyed lunching out with her many friends and especially with her darling daughters. She will be dearly missed by all. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 14 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, 162 Agamenticus Road, South Berwick.
THANK YOU ST. JUDE: May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day, by the 9th day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised and done.

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, My question is about desktop.ini files. I have 3 shortcuts on my desktop as follows: 2 - desktop.ini 1 - desktop(1). ini. If I try to delete them, I receive the following message: “Windows or another program may no longer work correctly”. Similar files also appear in the Documents library, Music library, Pictures library, Videos library and Documents library. What are these files for and
can they be safely deleted or hidden? Thank you, Vicki Dear Vicki, Actually, everyone has those files on their computer, it is just that most people never see them. The fact that you can see them means that you have your computer set to show hidden and protected operating system files. What are these files for? They contain settings that determine the way a folder is displayed on your

It runs on Windows 10, and I think it will serve me well. I would like to download Outlook Express; however, I know that Microsoft no longer supports that program, even though I like it and it’s comfortable for me. It seems that others have pirated the rights to it and a ‘donation’ is required to partake. Is there any way around that for this old lady who doesn’t tolerate change all that well? Many thanks, Jane Dear Jane, There is no legitimate or pirated copy of Outlook Express available to download and install. I did a little searching online and found what I think you are referring to. I’m pretty sure this program is made to look like Outlook Express, but it is not the real thing. I would suggest you try out Mozilla Thunderbird at www.mozilla. org/en-US/thunderbird/download. Thunderbird is free, open source software. It will always be free and will be around for a very long time. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? porch and read or sew, so I can relate to your problem. Before you start purchasing new items like a wi-fi extender, I would try moving your router. The signal from your router covers an area like how an umbrella protects an area from rain. If you position your router in the middle of your home, and fairly high up, it will reach farther than if it is on one side of your house, in the basement or on the first floor. My router, for example, is located in the center of my home, on a high shelf. (I have to use a ladder to get to it). If you are using an older router, purchasing a new, stronger one might also do the trick. Don’t get the cheapest one you can find; go with the middle price range. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, You have been very helpful to the “older generation” and I have a question. I have wifi in my home, but if I go to the back porch with my i-pad, I have no wifi access. I was told to purchase a wifi extender but it is expensive. Do you have any other alternative for me, other than to stay in the house when using my iPad? It is safe to delete the files, but Windows will just create new ones. It is better to change your settings and not show hidden files. Elizabeth

~ Pets ~ Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Mom Pig and her littlest baby are looking for a home together. They love to eat! They enjoy their veggies and won’t say no to an occasional sweet, Mom more so than Piglet. They aren’t interested in being pet or getting too close to their people (yet!), but with a treat or two, they are learning how awesome people are. In a home with lots of love and attention, we hope they would come out of their shells and learn to be loving pet pigs with their little piggy tails a-waggin! Like most pigs, they enjoy rooting around and taking mud baths. Mom especially enjoys laying around and soaking herself with mud, with her little shadow Piglet not far away. Thus, they definitely should have a home with access to muddy pools and outdoor space. Adoption fee is $150 for the pair. Visit www.animalwelfaresociety.org for details.
