Third Annual Bridge-A-Thon, Super Raffle
KITTERY -
On Sunday, September 10, the Third Annual Bridge-AThon and Super Raffle will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Four Tree Island, Peirce Island Road, in Portsmouth. Join nonprofit “I Got Bridged” (IGB) and walk across the Memorial Bridge into Kittery, to help bridge the gap for those in need on the seacoast. Enjoy live music from Unnamed Colors, refreshments, face painting, and a super raffle with $30,000 in prizes. This event is free to attend, but raffle tickets can be purchased online.
IGB Founder Freddy Petrone, of Portsmouth, went blind in 2018 at the age of 45 due
to Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, a rare genetic disorder. It was originally a devastating blow, exacerbated by his drug and alcohol addiction. After several years of struggling, Petrone was forced to look deeper into himself, at existence, purpose, and spirituality.
“The loss of my vision quite literally made me walk
by faith and not by sight, and forced me to reevaluate my life,” he wrote. He is now three years sober and proud to be part of the 2019 graduating class of the Carroll Center for the Blind. Petrone also learned that helping others takes the focus off the self. He wrote, “My long daily walks have helped me cope by clearing my mind and restoring
Star Island Gosport Regatta
SEACOAST -
The 2023 Star Island Gosport Regatta promises to be a spectacular event on Sunday, September 17. The historic sailing race is organized by the Piscataqua Sailing Association in conjunction with Star Island Corporation, to benefit both nonprofits. The public is welcome to purchase spectator tickets to watch the race from the decks of the M/V Thomas Laighton out
of Portsmouth, as it follows the regatta from Portsmouth Harbor to Star Island for family-friendly festivities including food, live music, a kite display, and an awards ceremony honoring regatta participants.
Star Island Corporation CEO Joe Watts said, “We welcome spectators and sailors to join us for this wonderful seafaring tradition, which we revived in 2009 in partnership with the Piscataqua Sailing Association. There’s nothing quite like this historical race that ends with a memorable festival on Star Island. It’s a perfect family event!”
The event certainly had a colorful start in July of 1874, when it was organized by John Poor, president of the Stickney & Poor Spice Trading Co., to celebrate the grand opening of his Star Island Oceanic Hotel. It attracted more than 50 boats, among them “America,” the yacht for which the legendary America’s Cup is named. It was America’s first race under the ownership of the most colorful General Benjamin Franklin Butler of Ipswich, MA, who had served as a top-ranking general

some sense of freedom. Often, though, I’m stopped in my tracks before crossing Portsmouth’s Memorial Bridge when it lifts for passing boats. I’ve dubbed this experience ‘getting bridged,’ which has become a metaphor for the unexpected obstacles life throws at us. But the metaphor doesn’t end there.” He then explained that ‘getting bridged’ does not mean one is necessarily stuck, but can instead use the time as an opportunity to pause and reflect.
IGB was created for people from all walks of life to ultimately help each other. The mission for the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization is to help those in need by utilizing a network of volun-
teers, sponsors, and contributors, recognizing that everyone is fighting a battle.
Petrone and IGB raise funds through the annual walka-thon, sponsors, donors, contributors, and selling merchandise on smile.amazon.com, www.igotbridged.com/shop-local, and area markets. Petrone and IGB provide free transportation to and from Gather Portsmouth via the Bridgemobile, assist in errands and the care of area seniors, give gifts to foster children through the First United Methodist Church, collaborate with Gather Food Pantry, organize a coat drive

Sister City Project Launches New Website
SOUTH BERWICKCommon Ground, the Sister City project that unites residents of Tuskegee, AL, with those living in South Berwick, has taken a big step forward.
The organization has launched a new website for the Sister City program, which was established in 2017 to foster frank discussion about race relations, and to be part of a national movement to heal the country’s racial divide.
The project cultivates an
environment for citizens of two communities, one predominantly Black and the other predominantly White, to talk, listen and engage with each other to improve and sustain better race relations. Common Ground goals include experiencing other communities to gain insight into respective cultures, traditions and perspectives, to foster and support respectful communication about history, privilege, fear, and equity in America. The relationship between the two cities has grown, through visits north and south, as well as phone, video and social media communications.
The two communities are similar in size and character; both are family-oriented and have proud histories, some of which overlap. Tuskegee is celebrated for its impact on agriculture, aviation, Civil Rights, education, entertainment and history. South Berwick is one of the oldest

Just Us Chickens Celebrates Artist’s 97th Birthday
KITTERYLocal artist Barrie Munro made York his home back in 1988. He was on the town’s Planning Board for 16 years and ran the Board of Environmental Maintenance for York. After his wife of 65 years passed, Barrie took up
bird carving. In 2015, Barrie discovered that the local artist co-op, Just Us Chickens, was the perfect place to sell his creations. Barrie joined the collective, and ended up serving on its Board for a number of years following. He loves being a “chicken” because the caliber of
35 th LAUDHOLM
work shown at the co-op continues to impresses him on all levels.
Barrie lives at Meetinghouse Village in Kittery, where he met second love Diane six years ago, in the mail room. She asked for a hug and a few minutes of Bingo, and they have been together ever since.
The public is invited to stop by Just Us Chickens at 156 State Road, Kittery, on Friday, September 8 to wish Barrie a “Happy Birthday!” Festivities start at 4 p.m.
In 2005, Just Us Chickens opened with 18 artists who exhibited everything from jewelry to handmade decorations to secondhand furniture. In the years since, the collective has steadily grown
to a current roster of over 30 contributing artists. Today, the shop is full of hand crafted works of art of all mediums.
As an artist cooperative, members share in manning the shop, paying the dues, and helping make decisions about new members, policies and finances.
WELLS -
Just Us Chickens offers several levels of participation for artists who would like to exhibit their work but cannot offer a time commitment.

Photo Contest Deadline
The deadline for submissions to the “Sense of Wonder” photo contest, held by the Friends of Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, ends on Friday, September 15 at 11:59 p.m. This contest has been ongoing since July 15, and the Friends are looking forward to seeing more submissions for jury consideration. Par-
ticipants may submit up to three photos to the website; twelve winning images will be selected for the 2024 Rachel Carson NWR calendar, available in November.
All photo submissions must be taken on Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge property located in Wells, Kittery, Biddeford, Saco or any other area specified as refuge land. The Friends will be looking for imagery that represents all seasons, so photos taken in previous years are always welcome. The contest is open to all ages.
The refuge was named for the author, conservationist and Maine summer resident, Rachel Carson, who among other book titles authored “The Sense of Wonder,” a book inspired by her years along the Maine coast and her days connecting with nature with her nephew, Roger.
The Friends will accept photos from any camera, including smart phones. All styles of photography: color, black-andwhite, high dynamic range alterations, and other artistic changes deemed necessary and interesting, are acceptable. The photograph submitted must be original to the artist who is submitting it. No watermarks are accepted.
Photo specifications: Horizontal or landscape orientation only; 300-600 dpi JPGs between 8-20 megapixels (minimum 2550 x 3300 pixels).
To submit, visit www. friendsofrachelcarsonnwr.org/ photo-contest. Selections will be made for the calendar by October 1. For more information, visit friendsofrachelcarsonnwr@ gmail.com or call 240-818-3692.

The locations where the artists will be painting will be posted on KLT’s website just before the weekend begins. The public is encouraged to come see these artists create their works of art – please note that locations may be subject to change due to weather or trail conditions.

(KAA) is thrilled to present its annual exhibit of art made and inspired by the great outdoors. “En Plein Air” is now on view at the KAA through Sunday, October 1, with an opening reception on Sunday, September 10, 5-7 p.m. Also on view are works by spotlight artist John Kessler.
John Kessler works with oil paints, usually depicting some aspect of life in rural and coastal New England. His paintings are representational in nature with a bit of impressionistic style. The subject matter is most likely a landscape, but John also paints the occasional still life of some fun item that piques his interest.
By actively participating in local exhibits, art associations, and social media accounts, he has gradually developed a following for his work.
“I guess you could say I started my art career in grade school, but then I took about fifty years off to pursue mechanical engineering. I finally returned to painting full-time about six years ago and haven’t looked back. I have taken art courses and several workshops recently to catch up for lost time.”
John has lived much of his life in New Hampshire where he finds his inspiration in the local farms, woods, wetlands, and coastal environment throughout the different seasons of the year.
John’s interest in photography is a nice complement to his painting. He is always on the lookout for that special view that can be turned into a painting, hopefully recreating the mood and feeling of the moment. He has improved his craft by taking classes at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester and workshops with established artists in the area including Stapleton Kearns, David
PICKYOUR OWN APPLES
Lussier, and Ken DeWaard.
John feels extremely fortunate to have the time, resources and family support to pursue his interest in art. He is active in the Kittery and Newburyport Art Associations and he is a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association in Portsmouth, NH.
According to John in his artist statement, “The world around us is interesting and beautiful when we take the time to look. As an artist I hope to point out some of those special instances that occur in our everyday lives. Maybe we don’t notice that beauty due to our busy schedules, going to work, taking care of the kids, running errands, or maybe we were just looking the other way. By creating my paintings, I hope to provide a second chance to see what might have been missed the first time around.”
The Kittery Art Association gallery and shop is located at 2 Walker Street in the Kittery Foreside. For more information, visit www.kitteryartassociation. org, email info@kitteryartassociation.org or call 207-451-9384.

Gallery Talk on Lithuanian Poet Matilda Olkinaite
KITTERY -
Haley Art Gallery will host a gallery talk, “The Silenced Muse: The Brief Life of the Poet Matilda Olkinaite,” by artist Laima Vince, on Saturday, September 16, 1-3 p.m. Vince will discuss how her series of paintings included in the gallery’s current exhibit, “In Art We Trust,”
depicts interval moments in “The Cerulean Bird,” a poem written in 1940 by Lithuanian Jewish poet, Matilda Olkinaite.
Olkinaite was murdered in the Holocaust in Lithuania at the age of 19.
Vince will decipher “The Cerulean Bird,” discussing how sensing the impending doom of
the encroaching war, and Hitler’s intent to annihilate Europe’s Jews, Matilda imagined herself as a magical cerulean bird, flying above strife and escaping into ecstasy in the pure joy of living. Her fate was not as inspiring, however, as the cerulean bird’s breast is pierced by three arrows, “carrying black death within.”

Raymond Joseph Goodwin, 81
WELLS – Raymond
Joseph Goodwin, 81, of Wells, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
Ray began his journey on May 29, 1942 in Fairfield, CT, born to parents Barbara (Beres) and Joseph Goodwin. Ray, “a drop of golden sun,” was the middle child of three. Jean, Ray, and Emily May lived in Fairfield until Ray was twelve, when they moved to Utica, NY. Ray attended St. Francis DeSales high school and went on to Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY, studying drafting and mechanical design. After graduating from MVCC, Ray went to work for General Electric.
He met Catherine Cavaretta of Utica, and they were married on August 23, 1969. They started their family and had two boys, Greg and Brian. Following a new job opportunity, the family moved to Shrewsbury, MA, during the blizzard of 1978. After working for several technology companies, Ray went into business for himself forming Modulus Design, a Guided Imagination Company, providing mechanical design services for entrepreneurial companies based around the Boston, MA, area. Ray loved design challenges and was gifted at math and problem solving, and helped bring many well-known products to market.
He actively embraced new technology, evolving from using traditional drafting methods to computer aided 3D design and modeling as it emerged.
Ray’s true passion was art. He grew up around wildlife with his father, who was an avid outdoorsman. Ray’s love and connection to nature and the wild were a central component of his art. He was an accomplished painter, painting landscapes in oil and acrylic, and block printing and handpainting Christmas cards. Similar to his change from 2D drafting to 3D modeling, Ray’s art evolved from painting on canvas to encompassing sculpture and wood carving using both clay and wood mediums.
Returning to his ancestral roots in Wells after his retirement, Ray was able to spend more time on his artwork, selling handmade cards, paintings, and carvings together with Cathy, at art and craft shows in the area under the name Goodwin Collection. He was a patient, kind, and caring person and a creative and gentle soul. His faith, family, and being a dad were a big part of his life. Ray enjoyed watching sports, helping prepare couples for marriage, going for rides, bird watching, and especially listening and singing along with music.
Survivors include his wife Catherine (Cavaretta) Goodwin of Wells; and sons, Greg Goodwin and his children Sawyer and Delaney of Portland, Brian
Goodwin and his wife Debbie and their children Eva, Chester, and Asher of Middlesex, VT.
On Friday, September 15, friends and family are invited for visiting hours, 9-10 a.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. Following will be a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Church, 236 Eldridge Road, Wells. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery in Wells.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to A Place to Start, 41 Main Street, Kennebunk, ME 04043 which provides hope for families living with dementia, or Maine Audubon Society at www.audubon. org.
Arrangements are in the care of Bibber Memorial Chapel. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, visit Raymond’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral. com.

EPA Settlements with Maine Companies Improve Chemical Safety
STATEWIDEIn an ongoing commitment to uphold chemical safety standards, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently finalized settlements with two prominent Maine-based companies, Jasper Wyman & Son and Barber Foods. These settlements address violations related to chemical safety and collectively impose penalties totaling $373,490. Addition-
ally, one of the companies has committed to executing Supplemental Environmental Projects (SEPs) as part of their settlement terms. Both companies utilize anhydrous ammonia as a refrigerant in their operations.
EPA New England Regional Administrator David W. Cash emphasized the importance of these settlements, stating, “Despite EPA’s efforts to improve compliance at facilities that use anhydrous ammonia as a refrig-

erant, our inspectors continue to see many troubling violations of the Clean Air Act’s chemical accident prevention requirements – in particular, failure to identify common hazards and follow industry standards of care during the operation of these refrigeration systems.” He further highlighted the critical need for compliance with Clean Air Act requirements, especially in rural areas, where chemical accidents may require considerable time for trained responders to arrive.
Wyman’s of Maine, a blueberry processing plant located in Cherryfield, has agreed to pay a penalty of $73,490 to address alleged violations of the Clean Air Act’s chemical accident prevention requirements at their facility. In addition to the penalty, the company will provide training for local emergency responders on addressing ammonia releases and donate equipment valued at approximately $65,000 to the Cherryfield Fire Department. This contribution aims to enhance the fire department’s response capabilities, particularly in handling chemical emergencies.
Barber Foods, LLC, a Portland-based company specializing in frozen poultry products, has agreed to pay a combined penalty of $300,000 for Risk Management Plan (RMP) violations at two of its facilities. This includes a penalty of $149,000 for alleged violations at its Milliken Street plant and $151,000 for alleged violations at its St. John’s
Street facility. Barber Foods operates under the Tyson Foods corporate family.
EPA inspections at the facilities revealed various violations of the Clean Air Act’s Risk Management Program (RMP) requirements. Additionally, the settlement with Wyman’s includes allegations related to the Clean Air Act’s General Duty Clause for a refrigeration system containing less than 10,000 lbs. of ammonia. The cases cite failures to identify, analyze, and control certain hazards, as well as lapses in documenting compliance with good engineering practices and equipment maintenance.
All three facilities utilize anhydrous ammonia in their refrigeration systems, an energy-efficient refrigerant with the
sisting Communities (MAC).”
This initiative empowers Masons to collaborate with local organizations and nonprofits in their respective communities, extending additional funding support through matching grant programs. For inquiries regarding ‘”Bikes for Books” or other community program funding, individuals are encouraged to reach out to their nearest Maine Masonic Lodge. Comprehensive information on Lodge locations, contact details, and details about various programs can be accessed the website listed below.
Susan Scacchi, Executive Director of the Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation, adds, “The Trustees have pledged
potential for harm when not handled carefully. Anhydrous ammonia is highly corrosive to the skin, eyes, and lungs, and its release can result in serious, often irreversible health effects. To mitigate the risks associated with anhydrous ammonia, refrigeration systems are designed to prevent ammonia release and minimize the impacts of any release event.
This includes rapid detection systems, safe equipment shutdown protocols, controlled containment measures, effective ventilation procedures, and accessible eyewash/shower stations for employees and responders. Operators must also collaborate with emergency responders and implement comprehensive equipment maintenance and employee training programs.

PUZZLE ANSWERS
What is a “well-child” visit?
A well-child visit, commonly known as a physical, is an annual appointment in which a child’s physician assesses the student’s growth and development. These check-ups typically consist of a physical exam assessing growth and development, routine immunizations to prevent disease, and hearing and vision tests. It is also an good time to have sports physical forms signed and to conduct mental health screenings.
When to schedule a visit?
If the child has not already had their annual wellness checkup, now it the time, as appointments typically fill up quickly in September. For younger children, appointments usually occur right after their birthday, but as they age, they may need to see the doctor closer to the start of the school year. Older students may also need to have their physical forms in order before they can participate in any school sports.
Additionally, receiving routine immunizations helps the child’s immune system build the antibodies needed to help
protect them from common contagious diseases such as influenza, mumps, measles, and tetanus. The child’s doctor will know which immunizations are appropriate for their age. Parents are urged to not only ask as many questions as possible, but to also refer to the full list of child and adolescent vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control by visiting www.cdc.gov.
Why discuss mental health?
Just as children can learn to understand medical problems that affect their bodies, such as how asthma can make their lungs tighten and how an inhaler can help them breathe more easily, parents and doctors can also help them understand that mental health concerns are just as important as physical concerns. Here is why that is so important. There has been a sharp increase in adolescent mental health issues in recent years, especially in the school years following the pandemic. According to a 2022 set of data collected by the CDC, more than 37% of high school students reported experiencing poor mental health during
the pandemic, with an additional 44% reporting they felt persistently sad or hopeless over the following few school years.
Many young people simply do not receive needed mental health treatment, and even talking about mental health issues can seem daunting or confusing, especially for kids and teens. Mental Health America reports that about 60% of youth with major depression do not receive counseling or treatment for the condition, even in states that have better access to mental health services. If left untreated, adolescent mental health issues can carry into adulthood. Mental health during adolescence has a greater bearing on one’s adult life than many people realize. CDC data on children’s mental health show that diagnoses of ADHD, anxiety, depression, and other mental disorders become increas-
ingly prevalent with age, and behavioral problems are more common among kids aged 6-11 than older or younger children. School is a challenging enough environment as it is, so be sure to talk to the child’s doctor about changes in mood, behavior, academic performance or disposition to better ensure their needs are addressed and their concerns are heard, giving the child the skills to excel both inside and outside the classroom. Most health insurance plans cover well-child visits, and for many parents without insurance, doctors offices can work out payment plans with the family. Some health care providers may also offer tiered payment plans.

very mellow, very, very sweet and affectionate. His problem is that he is really obese. Roni weighs more than any cat our vet has ever seen, coming in at 33 lbs.
This poor fellow is already on a diet plan and a mild exercise routine to get him started. When he moves, Roni’s big belly wisps the floor and gets dirty. He will need a devoted caregiver who will help him stay clean. Cats are fastidious about cleanliness – if they get dirty, they groom themselves, but poor Roni is too thick around the waist and neck to bend and clean himself.

Roni’s backstory is heartbreaking. His human first lost her husband, and then her home. In desperation, Roni was given to someone who promised to find him a new home. Turns out that person was going to send him off to live in a barn.
Another person intervened and called Safe Haven, and we now have Roni safe and sound at the shelter. He is getting all his tests and seems to be healthy, just overly plump. Everyone here loves Roni and hopes that someone will foster him and give him the love, attention and care he needs to lose the weight. Recently, Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) leaders, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME), and Representatives Lois Frankel (D-FL.) and Jahana Hayes (DCT.), urged Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to ensure discrimination settlement funds reach women farmers
and those who have faced discrimination by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the past. Section 22007 under the Inflation Reduction Act provides $2.2 billion in financial assistance for farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners who experienced discrimination in USDA’s farm lending programs prior to January 1, 2021. Pingree, Fran-
kel and Hayes say implementing Section 22007 is “an important step in addressing the history of discrimination at USDA, including against women and Black, Indigenous, (and) People of Color (BIPOC) farmers.”
With the rapidly approaching deadline of October 31 to file claims, DWC members sent a letter urging USDA to conduct robust outreach to women farmers and ensure there are focused efforts to reach all those who have experienced discrimination.
In a letter to Secretary Vil-
sack, the lawmakers highlighted the many barriers women face to own property and access credit.
Despite the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974, many women still faced discrimination by USDA at local Farm Service Agency offices, prompting legal action against USDA.
“To settle claims, the U.S. Judgement Fund provided $1.33 billion and USDA provided $160 million for female and Hispanic farmers. Nearly 54,000 claims were filed for cases of discrimination that occurred before 2000, but an audit by the Office
of the Inspector General found that USDA only compensated about 3,200 claimants and expended only about $207 million, while dismissing nearly 60 percent of claims due to paperwork errors,” the lawmakers explained. “Most claimants were never provided the reason their claims were denied.”
Now, women farmers, ranchers, and foresters have another opportunity to apply for compensation for past discrimination by USDA. Types of discrimination covered include race, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, religion, age, martial status, disability, and reprisal/retaliation for prior civil rights activity.
“Money alone cannot make up for the life-long impacts of discrimination. Nevertheless, USDA cannot repeat the mistakes of past settlement processes that have left tens of thousands without recompense due to technicalities,” the lawmakers said. “We urge USDA to contact the women who had previously submitted discrimination claims and provide targeted outreach to additional women who have experienced discrimination since 2000. We also ask USDA to share their outreach strategy with us.”
