The Day Our Nation Changed By Jim Fabiano Twenty years just isn’t enough. Since that day we have experienced many times that are hard and changed our lives. The pandemic has to be one of them with the retreat from Afghanistan being another that altered the way we viewed our nation and our society. I still remember that day in my class with my students; that day when all of our histories changed, that day I spend most of my life trying to not only understand, but to also believe. I just couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t express what I was feeling in words.
I knew everyone of those people who were condemned to die. I didn’t know their faces or their names but I knew them all. They were husbands and wives of families working to make the people they were responsible for safe and comfortable. They were the children of families whose hard work and perseverance made their families proud. They were the grandparents who were almost ready to live out their lives doing something they had dreamed they wanted to do. They were also the young and tough men and women who decided
their lives would not be equated by the dollar bill. They had decided their legacy would represent the best of the human spirit. They were the first to respond to people needing help. They will be last ones we will find. There are certain days in our lives that define who we are and the path we will take in life. Mine occurred on November 22, 1963. I remember what I was doing and where I was. Hell, I even remember what I was wearing. I look at my students and realize that See 911 page 15...
Maine Apple Sunday & Ancient Apple Webinar STATEWIDE The Maine State Pomological Society will hold the 21st annual Maine Apple Sunday on September 12 with participating orchards around the state. Maine Apple Sunday starts the peak of the apple harvest when summer apples are still available, but the main crop is ready for its first pick. Apple orchards from Wells to Caribou will celebrate by offering special activities at their orchards. Local paticipating farms include: Libby & Son U-Picks in Limerick will have a surprise gift in the first 50 apple bags! There will also be balloon characters, live music, and more.

McDougal Orchards in Sanford will host a sunset birthday picnic for their 90-year-old trees in the main orchard, 5-7 p.m. Bring food and a picnic blanket! Free cider and donuts while supplies last. Lawn games, wagon rides, and the corn maze will be available. Romac Orchard in Acton will have their corn maze, disc golf course, and free hay rides! Spiller Farm in Wells will have teams from the Abenake Draft Horse Club, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. touring farm trails. Hot corn on the cob and a corn stalk teepee

Beloved Local Artist Celebrates 105th Birthday KENNEBUNKPORT Sculptor, Artist, Shipwright, and community friend, Frank Handlen is turning 105 years old at the end of September and the Kennebunkport Historical Society is honoring his commitment to our community with a lecture followed by an open house reception and fundraising auction at the Townhouse School. On Friday, October 1, former society president and long-time stakeholder, Peter Whalen, will honor Frank Handlen with a lecture about his life, his work, and his long-time commitment to the Kennebunk-

port community. The society will flank the schoolhouse with its collection of Frank Handlen original pieces as an exhibit. Frank has generously offered an original piece of art to kick off an auction that will be introduced that evening and run through Indigenous People’s Day, October 11. All auction items will be listed on eBay and bids will be accepted as a fundraiser for the society.
