Brad Kenney to Direct Holiday Special at Carnegie Hall By Timothy Gillis Staff Columnist OGUNQUIT – Brad Kenney, the executive artistic director at Ogunquit Playhouse, has been tapped to work on a new holiday special at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Kenney will be working with multiple Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actress Jane Seymour and PBS composer Tim Janis for the musical journey called “The Christmas Rose” on Thursday, November 29. A cast of 400 performers will fill the stage for an evening of music, dance, and drama. Kenney has met with producers of the show and will begin work in earnest in early November. “It’s kind of a different genre,” Kenney said. “A mix of symphony, large choir, folkloric

dancing, with a Broadway musical story.” “The Christmas Rose” is a

whimsical, family tale that follows a young orphan named Annabelle into the desert, pursued

by a team of bandits. She crosses paths with everything from the three wise men and singing angels to Mary and Joseph. “It has a spiritual, holiday feel to it,” Kenney said. “It will be very inspirational, fun, upbeat. We’re shooting for it to be an annual holiday event there.” The show will employ Broadway-caliber talent, he said, and is very funny. “A team of bandits, led by a character named Adbul, are comic and farcical in their attempts to capture this young girl,” Kenney said. “The backstory is really about a lot of us, a universal message. She’s finding her way in the next part of her life.” Kenney came to be involved in the mega-production when he was approached by

Janis, a noted composer from York, and his producing partners. Kenney’s reputation as Ogunquit Playhouse’s artistic director is known in theater circles around the country, and they recruited him to be at the helm of this new venture in a theatrical fashion. “We hope it’s the new Nutcracker,” Janis said. Jane Seymour is the star of the show, set in a story-telling environment. Seymour’s husband, James Keach, who produced “Walk the Line,” will work with Kenney on the production. Kenney thinks Seymour is the perfect choice for her role. “There’s a beautiful aura of elegance about her, for telling a story like this, on the grand scale of Carnegie Hall,” he said. at speeds exceeding eighty miles an hour takes courage, practice and great skill. But that is what Julia Clukey does when in competition on the U.S. National Luge Team. To get to where she is today involved goals and the motivation to achieve them through persistence, determination and lots of hard work. On September 4, Clukey, a 2003 graduate of Cony High School in Augusta, was the motivational speaker for freshmen orientation at Wells High

School. She was introduced to the audience by team leader for the freshman team and math teacher Andy Bridge. Following a short film about her sports career thus far, Clukey talked about being on the Junior Olympic Team and how, at just 17, she became a member of the Senior Olympic Team, a spot that is normally for those 20 and older. “This was a huge moment See OLYMPIAN page 24...

United Way of York County and the United Way of the Greater Seacoast, the center has enjoyed many Days of Caring with great volunteers. Some of the projects were accomplished by companies like Kennebunk Savings Bank, Hussey Seating, and Pratt & Whitney. Also, Serenity Gardens assisted with upkeep of gardens surrounding the building, new stairs and a landing for the back, new picnic tables, new accessible gardening tables, a new entrance way, building painting, and building repairs. Approximately 650 volunteers were mobilized on September 11 to assist area nonprofits with projects. It is a very important gift that companies give to support the efforts of local nonprofits. According to independentsector. org, the value of volunteer time in Maine is $16.84 per hour. Eleven volunteers from Lonza and nine organizational volunteers from both Ethel’s Tree of Life and the South Berwick Youth Center participated. Volunteers were on site from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. giving a total of about 132 man-hours with a value of $2,222.88. Along with all of the work accomplished, the savings for nonprofits in these very difficult economic times is essential. Also important is the lift that such enthusiastic support gives to the nonprofits, while the best part of it all is meeting the people that work for the companies participating in the Days of Caring. Connecting with them, learning about what they do for the community at their places of employment, and networking with them can only build strength in the community. The South Berwick Youth Center is a gathering place for the youth of the community and is where Ethel’s Tree of Life is housed.

The Farmer Family Service Award Goes to Rebecca Dodier

SOUTH BERWICK – The Farmer Family Service Award seeks to recognize the work of Marshwood High School students in their various pursuits of service to others. It is made by the Eliot Baha’i Community in recognition of the service to humanity of the Farmer family of Eliot, Maine - Moses Gerrish Farmer (1820-1893), his wife Hannah Tobey Shapleigh Farmer (1823 - 1891) and daughter Sarah Jane Farmer (1847-

1916). The 2012 award was presented to Rebecca Dodier, a graduating senior at Marshwood High School with high honors, and resident of Eliot. Her active service to the community is truly inspiring. Emulating the selfless spirit of the Farmer family, Dodier devoted much of her time to volunteering at the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; Portsmouth Hospi-

tal; Table of Plenty; Crossroads; Marshwood Middle School Summer Art Camp, and other agencies. Rebecca recently enrolled at Northeastern University, where she wasted no time in continuing her volunteer efforts. She completed a week of community service called nuSERVES. “It was an amazing experience that focused on hunger and homelessness in Boston. Not only did I get

to serve my surrounding community and make a difference, but I’ve made some really great friends” said Dodier, adding

also look to do some painting on the viewing platform. With your help, they can keep Mount A looking fabulous and worth coming back to. With a little more cooperation from the weather, this may be the perfect opportunity to observe the amazing hawk migration as you work. With a strong NW wind, the summit is the perfect spot to view many raptors flying through as they make their way south. Some common sightings this week include osprey, American kestrels, merlins, bald eagles, broad-winged, red-tailed, and sharp-shinned hawks. Participate on a First Day of Autumn Adventure to Second Hill, Saturday, September 22 from 9 am to 12 noon. Did you know Mount A has three hills? As part of a Nature Walk Series being offered this year, they will focus on tree identification along the way to Mount A’s Second Hill. Mount A is a natural mixing ground where southern and northern forests meet and is home to many different tree species. During this fun and educational hike, you can take a closer look at leaves, bark, buds, seeds and more to aid in identification. A $5 dollar donation is suggested for this hike. Plan to meet at the summit Learning Lodge. Reserve your spot for the September work party and/or the nature walk in advance by contacting Robin Kerr: robin@ agamenticus.org or 207-361-1102.

LEBANON – On Monday, September 10, Lebanon Board of Selectmen chairman Robert Frizzell was notified of a positive case of Eastern equine encephalitis in Lebanon. Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but serious viral disease spread by mosquitoes that can affect people and horses. EEE can also cause disease in captive birds such as the ring-necked pheasant, emu, ostriches, quail and ducks. EEE infection and disease can occasionally occur in other livestock, deer, dogs, other mammals, reptiles and

amphibians. Frizzell contacted fellow board members Karen Gerrish and Jason Cole, and the issue was discussed late Monday afternoon. Doctor Stephen Sears, the State of Maine epidemiologist from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, contacted Frizzell Monday afternoon reporting that Eastern equine encephalitis had been found in a flock of pheasants in Lebanon. The pheasants were reported to be from a captive pheasant farm in Lebanon, but no further location was given. Unfortunately, thirty pheas-

ants have perished in this farm due to being infected with EEE. This is not the first time that EEE has been found in animals in Lebanon, but is the first for this year. It has also been reported in the past few years. EEE has never been reported in a Maine resident to date. However, in 2008 there was a fatal case of EEE diagnosed in a Massachusetts resident who may have acquired the infection while vacationing in Cumberland County. “The Lebanon Board of Selectmen wants to make sure that the residents are aware of the situation and are provided the facts that we were provided. There is no need for alarm, we simply want to ensure the residents have the information that we have been provided so they can make the appropriate safety measures,” Frizzell said. “Residents who have children or seniors are at higher risk and some cannot afford the repellent with DEET. I encourage any of those residents to email me or call me; I personally went out and bought a large supply of DEET repellent to ensure all residents who would like some can have access to it to protect their families. Residents can email me at selectmancole@yahoo.com or call my cell phone 207-6085615 and I will provide a bottle as long as I still have some left. All of the Selectmen want to make sure that the residents stay safe and have the information to protect themselves,” Cole said. Selectwoman Gerrish will be notifying the schools of the update on the EEE being found in Lebanon and will work with them on what they plan on doing with this latest information. The School Department has been kept up to date when we receive information to protect all the children at the schools. Residents are encouraged to use basic prevention and precaution as mentioned before with the first case of the West Nile Virus being found also in Lebanon on August 17. At this time the State is not recommending spraying for the mosquitos. Since the first positive test in August, no additional mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile Virus. For more information on EEE, visit National Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov.

many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The aims of the celebration are to (1) emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving it for posterity; (2) inform the people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and (3) encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787. is the oldest document still in active use that outlines the selfgovernment of a people. This landmark idea that men had the inalienable right as individuals to be free and live their lives under their own governance was the impetus of the American Revolution. Today, the Constitution stands as an icon of freedom for people around the world. “We must remember and teach that those who wrote the Constitution believed that no government can create freedom, but that government must guard freedom rather than encroach upon the freedoms of its people,” said Merry Ann T. Wright, president general of the DAR. “The Constitution by itself cannot guarantee liberty. A nation’s people can remain free only by being responsible citizens who are willing to learn about the rights of each arm of government and require that each is accountable for its own function. Therefore, Constitution Week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard of our American liberties. We encourage all citizens across the country to take time this week to guard that which is committed to us by our forefathers... our freedom.” DAR has served America for 122 years as its foremost cheerleader. In 1928, the Daughters began work on a building as a memorial to the Constitution. John Russell Pope, architect of the Jefferson Memorial, was commissioned to design the performing arts center, known as DAR Constitution Hall. Today, DAR Constitution Hall is the only structure erected in tribute to the Constitution of the United States of America. The DAR has long promoted patriotism through commemorative celebrations, memorials, scholarships and activities for children, and programs for new immigrants. ~ News ~ Local Grad Completes Basic Training SOUTH BERWICK – Cadet Jack Verrill, son of Mr. & Mrs. Michael Verrill of South Berwick, completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy. Verrill entered West Point on July 2 and has successfully completed six weeks of CBT. Also referred to as “Beast Barracks,” CBT is one of the most challenging events a cadet will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy. The initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion, confidence and a high sense of duty to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Areas of summer instruction included first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship and nuclear, biological, and

chemical training. Verrill began classes August 20. The West Point curriculum offers forty-five majors balancing physical sciences and engineering with humanities and social sciences leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Verrill graduated from Marshwood High School. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2016 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. The mission of the U.S. Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the United States Army.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, When I pick a picture from “My pictures” (It may be a picture from an email, newsletter or magazine that I have saved as) to email to a friend, I would like to put a comment under the picture. It doesn’t work for me as it won’t let me type on the picture copy page. Can you advise me if this is possible or perhaps I should “save picture as” differently? Thank you, Lorraine Dear Lorraine, What you need to add text to a picture is an image editing program. There are many image editing programs out there, but if you are using a computer with Windows on it you already have a basic image editing program included, called Paint. You can easily open your image in Paint, add text, and then save a copy of the image with the text added. Here is how: 1. Open Paint by clicking Start, pointing to “All Programs” then “Accessories” and finally click on “Paint.” An alternate way to open Paint in Windows 7 is to click on “Start” and then type “Paint” in the

search box. 2. Once you have Paint open, you can open your image using the file menu (Or click on the tab on the very left). 3. With your image open, you can then use Paint to add text to your image. Another tool that you can use to put text on an image is Picasa at: http:// picasa.google.com/ Picasa is a free image program from the folks at Google. When you open a picture in Picasa, just click on the wrench in the upper- left corner of your screen, then click on the text editing tool (It has ABC on the little icon) and add your text. I hope this helps you with your photos. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I remember reading directions for finding the Windows Mail program within Windows 7. It is there, but hidden, is what the article stated. I am now running Windows OS 7, 64 bit. If you can help me with the directions for getting my Windows Mail back, I would be so appreciative. I do not like Outlook Mail. Thank you, Sharon Dear Sharon,

Actually, Windows Mail might not have come with your computer. The reason for this is that Windows 7 does not include Windows Mail (or Windows Live Mail) but many manufacturers install it to make it easier for their customers. If you can’t find Windows Mail, or Windows Live Mail on your computer, you can simply download and install it from Microsoft’s website. Go to: http:// windows.microsoft.com/en-US/ windows-live/essentials-otherprograms Or just go to Google and search for “Windows Live Mail download.” Another free email program that you might want to try is Mozilla Thunderbird at: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ thunderbird/ Thunderbird is also free, and has a few extra features that WLM does not have. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Years ago I used a recipe template in Microsoft Works to load recipes to keep as a cookbook. Now years later and with computers that have Word and not Works, is it possible to transfer this file from Works to Word

even if they were done on a Works template. Your help is appreciated, Larry Dear Larry, I don’t have any Works files on-hand to experiment with, but I did find some directions on Microsoft’s website that should help you. Here are the directions from Microsoft: Convert Works documents to Word format: By using a file format converter in Microsoft Word, you can open documents that were created in Microsoft Works. After you open the document, you can save it in Word format. On the File menu, click Open. In the Files of type list, click Works 6.0 & 7.0. If you don’t see this option in the list In the File name box, enter the name of the file that you want to convert, and then click Open. On the File menu, click Save As. In the Save As dialog box, make any changes that you want in the File name box, click the file format that you want in the Save as type list, and then click Save. Hopefully, this will help you convert your recipe book into Word Format. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Each week when receiving The Weekly Sentinel, your article is the first thing I read. Thanks for answering all those questions. I have two questions in re-

gards the Windows 7 and the Microsoft download camera wizard, which is a lot different from the one in Windows XP. 1. I would like to only download part of the new pictures on my camera to one named folder and the others to a differentlynamed folder. The wizard makes me download all the pictures to one folder and then I have to manually move (and rename) the pictures to other folders. 2 2. The wizard only allows the pictures to be downloaded once and sometimes I have reason to download them a second time and cannot figure out how to do that. If you have any ideas on how to do the above items, I would truly appreciate it. Richard Dear Richard, Thank you for your kind comments! When it comes to downloading your pictures from your camera, the download wizard is easy to use, but does not have many customization features. In answer to your first question, I am not aware of any way to specify which pictures to download (I’m pretty sure it is all or nothing) or that you can specify more than one location for the pictures. For your second question, I can only guess that you have a check mark in the box that erases the images from the camera after importing. If you remove that check mark, the images will stay on the camera, and you should be able to download them as many times as you want. Each time, they would go into a folder with the date that you imported them. If you are looking for more powerful importing software, I did find a couple of programs online. I have not had a chance to try these programs yet, but hopefully someone else has used them and can share their experiences in the comments section on my website. Here are two programs that I found. They look like they might be great programs, but I have not used them: Smart Photo Import: www. nwspro.com/si.htm and RoboImport, Digital Camera Downloader: http://picajet.com/en/ index.php?page=roboimport. Elizabeth Comments This Week: Dear Computer Lady, “Picasa” photo program has a built-in “Snapshot” that can be taken when you play a video. It is in a menu after you start playing the video and goes to a folder called Captured Videos. Works great. and easy to do. Hope this helps someone! Letha Interested in learning more? After more than a year of negotiation and preparation, KLT signed an agreement with the US Department of Agriculture and Natural Resource Conservation Service that commits the agencies to contributing $414,500 to the project and outlines responsibilities of all parties. Kittery Land Trust is working with the Johnson family to conserve the 300-acre farm on Wilson Road. Currently operated as a dairy farm, the land has some of the best agricultural soils in the area. The land is also important for protecting water quality. The southern portion of the property

Blood Drive Held in Memory of Courtney DeWitt WELLS – The family and friends of Courtney DeWitt invite members of the Wells community to join them in a loving tribute to her life. A Red Cross blood drive will be held in Courtney’s memory on Friday, September 21, at the Wells Activity Center located at 113 Sanford Road. Blood donors can visit the drive between 12 and 5 p.m. to give the Gift of Life for patients who must rely on blood transfusions. DeWitt was only 15 years old when she was killed in a tragic automobile accident in December of 2006. Despite the efforts of Wells EMS and LifeFlight of Maine technicians, DeWitt died from her injuries at the scene of the accident. This fifth annual blood drive is dedicated in loving memory of her so that patients who need blood will have a chance at life.

“This blood drive allows the Wells community to remember Courtney in a very meaningful way,” said Brian Mula-Howard, account executive for the American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern New England Region. “We are grateful for the thoughtfulness and generosity of the DeWitt family and encourage eligible donors to come and honor the memory of this special young woman.” Potential blood donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with written parental consent, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors age 18 and younger may also be required to meet additional height and weight requirements. Donors can give blood every eight weeks. For more information, call Red Cross at 1-800 RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org.

Support Direct From The Heart SANFORD – Most people from the Sanford area are familiar with Waban in some capacity. They have a friend or family member who works for Waban, they have a loved one who has received services, or they have generously donated to the Telethon. They know that Waban develops and implements programs for children and adults with developmental and other disabilities, including homes for residents who need care, sometimes around the clock. But what does it take to become one of the dedicated individuals who provide care for this special population? Meet Nicole Dagle, who was working in a retail customer service job when she was “discovered” by a drive-thru customer who complimented her helpful personality and genuine desire to deliver excellent service. It was suggested to her that she might be a good fit for direct support. Coincidentally, Dagle had already been thinking about just such a change in her life. Beyond the obvious desire and capacity, there are certifications that are required by the State of Maine for anyone who is caring for adults with developmental disabilities in agencies, like Waban, that receive statefunded supports and services. New direct care staff must complete all College of Direct Support (CDS) requirements within six months from their date of hire. While Waban provides this training and subsequent certification for employees, candidates at the application stage can greatly increase their marketability by completing the course in advance. Sanford Community Adult Education is now offering a Direct Support Professional (DSP) course, using the College of Direct Support. The DSP course represents 45 hours of curriculum that incorporates on-line lessons with live classroom sessions which focus on teaching the critical skills, knowledge, and best practices necessary to support adults with developmental disabilities in a community-based residential program. Once the learning is complete, the student becomes a certified DSP. This is a lifelong certification. Maine’s DSP certificate is recognized by, and

Furthermore, a significant benefit of CDS to all DSPs is the credibility that it lends to the entire field of Direct Care, creating a tone of professionalism that has long been deserved. The Certified DSP is well versed in critical direct care responsibilities, thus shortening the on-the-job learning curve. They come to Waban Projects with knowledge of, and tools to accomplish, some of the key objectives in supporting clients such as personal care, community inclusion, positive behavior supports, and much more. One of the great benefits of obtaining the certificate is that job candidates are able to show that

they have a skill set and knowledge base that other applicants lacking the certification might not have. Another benefit is that once hired, new staff persons are not consumed with on-line learning and are able to more readily get down to the task of supporting their clients, and practicing and developing their new skill sets. Dagle signed up for the course at SCAE, became the first graduate of the pilot program and attained her DSP Certificate. Upon completion of the course, she was immediately hired by Waban. With a big smile and confident manner, she admitted she had many reasons why this is the right work for her. “I have a 5 year-old nephew with autism and multiple diagnoses including MR and I’ve always wanted to learn more about the See WABAN page 14...

END YOUR FIBROMYALGIA AND/OR THYROID NIGHTMARE! DISCOVER HOW TO DECREASE PAIN & INCREASE YOUR ENERGY!

Do you feel like every drop of energy is drained from your body and most days you just hurt all over? Does going to the bathroom feel like a ten-mile hike? Even after numerous tests with your doctor, do they say “we can’t find anything wrong”? You are not alone. Millions of Americans suffer from the effects of fibromyalgia and thyroid issues. But the sad fact is most of them have been told they’re crazy, lazy, or just depressed! You’ve Tried Everything, And You’re STILL Suffering. Do you have any of the following symptoms? • Aching all over • Disturbed sleep • Tender points in the neck, spine, shoulders and hips • Recurring headaches • Fatigue and stiffness • Anxiety/depression • Weight gain • Heart palpitations • Inward trembling • Night sweats • Cold hands and feet Maybe your doctor doesn’t even think fibromyalgia is a real disease, but you know it is. You suffer with it every day! Perhaps your doctor simply gives you thyroid meds and sends you on your way as if everything is fine… so why do you still feel horrible? One fibromyalgia/thyroid patient said it like this… “I am so tired of the guilt of not being able to keep my house the way I like or fix dinner for my husband all the time. With the girls and the meds and pain I can barely just get that done, let alone clean and cook dinner most days.”

Another said… “For people who take good health for granted, it’s hard to imagine a condition that makes simple tasks great tests of will and determination.” Fibromyalgia and thyroid disorders are often called the invisible diseases. You look fine on the surface, but underneath you’re often exhausted and in excruciating pain. My name is Dr. Jeff Donatello and I am both a Certified Nutrition Specialist and a Chiropractor. Over the last 18 years, I’ve used natural protocols to help hundreds of fibromyalgia and thyroid patients feel better and live healthier, more joyful lives. I wrote the book on how oxygen therapy can help natural fibromyalgia/thyroid care. My book, Energize Your Brain, Change Your Life: An Introduction to Exercise With Oxygen is available online at Amazon.com. I have found that MANY fibromyalgia patients also have thyroid issues BECAUSE the thyroid controls metabolism. The thyroid is the “gas pedal” of the body and many patients with fibromyalgia and/or thyroid disorders have “no gas,” they are out of ENERGY! The more patients I helped get better, the more I realized that… No One Should Have To Suffer The Way You Do. I’ve made it my mission in practice to help those suffering with chronic conditions like you. Because of this, I’m running a special offer for patients suffering from fibromyalgia, thyroid conditions and female problems. For a limited time only, $27 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients for $257! What does this offer include?

• An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen… really listen… to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular and metabolic examination. • A thorough analysis of your exam and past health records including past lab results, so we can start mapping out your plan to being symptom free. I will provide answers to all of your most probing questions about fibromyalgia, thyroid issues, and female problems like… WHY you need to decrease inflammation, detoxify your body and increase your immune system function to truly HEAL! …EXACTLY what you need to do to increase your ENERGY! If you don’t have energy, you are not going to heal! …EXACTLY what you need to do to get a good night’s rest. If you are not sleeping, you are NOT HEALING! PLEASE NOTE: This offer is only good until September 24, 2012! The appointment will not take long at all. And you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. The offer is open to only the first fifteen callers so call NOW! For Many Patients, There Is Hope. You Just Need The Right Plan! Imagine how great you could feel without your constant symptoms. Imagine waking up each morning, jumping out of bed, and enjoying the day… No more waking up and feeling like you got hit by a truck. Imagine not having to take handfuls of pills that haven’t helped and can have side effects. Imagine what it would be like to finally have hope again – Hope that you will get WELL and feel GREAT! To have a doctor finally tell you what’s wrong and what

Five Money Management Tips Your Momma Would Love When you’re in your twenties, probably at your first job, struggling to make ends meet, saving for your future may be the least of your concerns. Even with decades of work ahead of you, however, in these uncertain times, saving for your future, even retirement, isn’t something you can afford to put off. Wondering where to start? Here are five financial tips every young adult should consider to help manage money and better prepare for the future: 1) Invest in your future. These days, technology changes in the blink of an eye. To make certain you’re not blindsided, make it a point to make ongoing career education a priority. Doing so will not only enhance your skills, but increase your professional potential. The more varied and flexible your skills, the more attractive you may be to prospective employers. 2) Start saving now for later. The uncertainty of today’s workplace may mean that your professional life may be interrupted by short

or long periods of change. Therefore you may face periods of unstable income so creating an emergency fund to cover several months’ worth of living expenses can help you manage these transitions. You may also use this savings for other opportunities, such as starting your own business or continuing your education. 3) Save early and often for retirement. Retirement may seem very far off right now. But today, saving for your retirement is your responsibility, and it will take discipline, diligence and lots of time to make it happen. With employer-sponsored 401(k) plans, the responsibility of saving rests on your shoulders, so make time and compound interest your allies. 4) Let retirement funds accumulate. If you change jobs often in your working years, consider rolling over your account into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or new company retirement plan. Although it may be tempting to cash in the account, especially if you have accumulated only a small amount, be careful: doing so makes it immediately taxable and you may

also incur an early withdrawal penalty. A greater concern is that you may be unable to make up for time already spent to accrue these savings. 5) Use credit wisely. Credit card companies frequently target young adults with the lure of “easy money.” While credit cards offer convenience (it’s virtually impossible to conduct some transactions, such as reserving airline tickets, without one), they also have the potential to create debt problems. Because payments can be stretched far into the future, overspending on credit can create an illusion of wealth. Paying off the balance each month is the best way to control credit. Plan now for the future. Remember, the funds you accumulate during your working years may be your primary source of retirement income. Although no one knows what the future will bring, a little discipline and common sense over time can help you better manage your current and future financial affairs. Raising “Awareness” of Life Insurance Benefits YORK COUNTY – You may be unaware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And when you consider the lifetime of benefits you and your family may receive from life insurance, you might agree that a month isn’t too long to spend on this important part of your overall financial picture. Unfortunately, too many Americans are uninsured or under-insured. In fact, nearly a third of all consumers think they need more life insurance, according to the 2012 Insurance Barometer Study, published by the nonprofit LIFE Foundation and LIMRA, a research and consulting organization that specializes in insurance and financial services. And it appears that one of the main reasons so many people lack sufficient life insurance is their perception that they can’t afford it. Yet, the cost for basic term life insurance has fallen by about fifty percent over

the past ten years, according to the Life Foundation. The cost — financial, emotional and psychological — of not having adequate life insurance certainly outweighs the expense of carrying the proper coverage. You’ll hear about many things that are designed to “last a lifetime,” but in the case of life insurance, that expression is appropriate. Consider the various times in which you should look at the need for life insurance: • When you’re married Many married couples assume they won’t need life insurance until they have children. But if you or your spouse died, would the surviving spouse’s income be sufficient to pay off the mortgage, or even the rent? How about credit card balances, car loans or student loans? • When you’re married… with young kids — Now, in addition to having to pay off the mortgage if anything should happen to you, your surviving spouse will have to find the money to educate your children — and that’s a big challenge, given the rapidly escalating expenses associated with college. But with sufficient life insurance in place, your spouse can deal with the high costs of higher education. Furthermore, if you have permanent life insurance, such as whole life or universal life, you have the potential to build cash value, which you may be able to tap to help pay for college — while you’re still alive. (Keep in mind, though, that using some of your cash value could lower your policy’s death benefit.) • When your children are grown — Even with your children grown and gone, you can benefit from life insurance. For example, if your spouse outlives you by a decade or more, will he or she have enough money to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle? • When you’re retired — Your need for life insurance doesn’t retire when you do. For one thing, you may be able to access the cash value of your permanent insurance to help meet your retirement expenses. (Keep in mind this may affect your death benefit.) And your policy’s death benefit could help your children or other heirs deal with estate taxes, if any exist. Furthermore, if See LIFE page 18...

Keep Income Producers Working Hard, Even When Rates are Low Last week, we observed Labor Day, which honors all the hard-working men and women in the United States. As an investor, you’d like to think that all your investments are working hard, too — including the ones that are producing income. But can your income-oriented investments be productive when short-term interest rates are at historic lows? Or can you find other investment possibilities that could potentially boost your cash flow? The answer to both these questions is “yes” — but you may have to take a closer look at where you stand on the riskreward spectrum. For example, you might need to consider longer-term income producers, which typically pay higher yields than shorter-term equivalents. Longer-term fixed-rate securities, such as bonds, must pay these higher rates to reward investors, who face both interest-rate risk — the possibility that interest rates will rise, causing the value of existing bonds to fall — and inflation risk, the threat of losing purchasing power by the time long-term bonds have matured. Still, you may be willing to accept these risks in exchange for the higher yields. However, you may be looking for income producers that can work hard for you without having to hold them for a long period to maturity. This is because the “yield curve” — the line that plots the relationship between yield and maturity — is fairly steep right now, which, in English, means you can gain noticeably higher yields just by modestly increasing the maturity of your investments. Your financial advisor can suggest some short-term and intermediate-term vehicles

that may be appropriate for your needs. And while these rates will still not be as high as those offered by longer-term vehicles, they do offer flexibility — along with less interest-rate risk and inflation risk. You can also help protect yourself from these risks by building a “ladder” consisting of short-, intermediate- and longer-term bonds and certificates of deposit (CDs). Once you’ve built your ladder, it can help you weather changing interest-rate environments. When market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds and CDs earning higher interest rates. And when market rates rise, you’ll be able to reinvest your maturing short-term investments at the higher levels. If you need the cash, you can liquidate the maturing bonds and CDs. Thus far, we’ve only looked at fixed-rate investments — but you may also be able to boost your income by owning dividend-paying stocks. Some companies have paid — and even increased — their stock dividends for many years in a row. If you’re not in need of the cash, you can reinvest the dividends and boost your ownership stake, which is a key to increasing your wealth. But if you do need the money, you can take the dividends as cash. Keep in mind that income producers are not a “sure thing” because companies can decide to reduce, or even discontinue, their dividends at any time. In addition, history tells us that you may experience more price volatility from stocks, and they can be worth more or less than the original investment when sold. As you can see, you can find ways to keep income-producing investments working hard for you, despite the prevailing low interest rates. So consider your options, weigh the risks — and then work with your

China Trade Mission Underway Governor LePage and delegation in Hong Kong HONG KONG – The first three days in China have proven to be productive and successful for the Maine delegation. After arriving in Hong Kong late Sunday, the group of Maine business representatives and Governor Paul LePage met with various officials and business leaders. The mission is a coordinated effort by the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), Maine International Trade Center (MITC), and the U.S. Department of Commerce. “We are here to tap into this country’s growth and opportunity and make those face to face connections,” said LePage, the first Maine Governor to lead a trade mission to mainland China. Thirteen Maine businesses and organizations are taking part in the mission which is providing them with the opportunity to expand their markets to China and explore business relationships with commercial partners

in high growth cities such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Huangzhou. Participants are given the opportunity to conduct business-to-business matchmaking meetings. In addition, the mission is promoting the State of Maine, and its cities/counties as an ideal location for trade and investment as well as strengthening the state’s economic ties with China. “Our first day in Hong Kong was very busy with five productive meetings. To our surprise, these companies were already familiar with our products and most were interested in exploring a mutual business

relationship,” said Tom Yale, president of the Saco-based company, Yale Cordage. Hong Kong is a growing gateway for Maine companies. In 2011, approximately $15 million of Maine products were sold there. As Maine’s third largest foreign market, Maine exported $275 million worth of Maine products last year. “As the world’s second largest economy, China offers huge potential for Maine and Maine businesses,” said DECD commissioner George Gervais, who is a member of the Maine Delegation.

night was “all about lobster” when the Maine Lobster Council featured a Maine lobster-tasting event. LePage spoke to an audience of seafood importers, distributors and hotel/restaurant buyers from Hong Kong who came and tasted Maine’s quality products. Maine lobster is getting more and more popular in Asia, where exports have exploded from just over $100,000 annually in 2010 to nearly $1.5 million last year. Ready Seafood, of Portland, supplied the lobster for the event, and Atlantic Kingdom Seafood has been taking advantage of matchmaking meetings in mainland China and Hong Kong. The Governor toured a “City Super” food market in Kowloon, where he saw Cozy Harbor Seafood and Jasper Wyman’s blueberries on display. Tuesday night the Governor spoke about Maine’s seafood products at the Asian Seafood Exhibition in Hong Kong. Coordinated by Portland-based Diversified Communications, the Asian Seafood Exhibition is one of Asia’s largest seafood shows. On Wednesday the Maine Delegation departs Hong Kong for Shanghai, the second leg of the Trade Mission, where the focus shifts to medical products and biotech sectors.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Credit Unions Honor 11th Anniversary of 9/11 with Donation to Local Heroes

PORTLAND – “People Remembering & Helping People” was the theme for the 11th anniversary 9/11 tribute by Maine’s credit unions to the five Red Cross chapters of Maine. At the ceremony, Maine’s credit unions honored and remembered the victims of 9/11 and their families. In addition, the Maine Credit Unions’ “Campaign for Ending Hunger,” which has raised $4.3 million since 1990 including a record-setting $447,000 in 2011, distributed more than $6,000 of those funds raised to the Emergency Food Relief Fund of each Red Cross chapter in Maine, as well as to a food pantry located in each Red Cross chapter in the state. “9/11 brought about a tremendous resurgence of community in Maine and across the country, and helping make sure people have enough to eat and receive assistance during an emergency is what community is all about. The Maine Credit Unions’ “Campaign for Ending Hunger” has chosen to mark the anniversary of 9/11 in this way each year in recognition of the volunteers who

help communities during difficult times,” said John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League. The five Red Cross chapters in Maine who received checks in the amount of $911 each are the Southern Maine Chapter, United Valley Chapter, Mid Coast Chapter, Pine Tree Chapter, and Pine Tree-Aroostook Chapter. The five food pantries in Maine who received checks in the amount of $311 each are the Wayside Soup Kitchen of Portland, Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Food Pantry of Brunswick, St. Mary’s Food Pantry of Lewiston, MANNA Food Pantry of Bangor, and Catholic Charities of Maine of Caribou. “What a generous gesture on the part of Maine’s credit unions to help us provide food to those in need. We are grateful for what the Campaign does and appreciative that our organizations are included each year through this event,” said Carole Evans, interim CEO of the American Red Cross – Southern Maine chapter, the state’s largest chapter. “The Maine credit union philosophy of ‘people helping

people’ goes hand in hand with the Red Cross mission of saving lives and helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies,” said Jon Paradise, governmental and public affairs manager for the Maine Credit Union League. “As we honor the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, it is important to remember both the tragedies that impact our entire

nation, as well as those which occur in our communities each day, in what remains a challenging time for many.” Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ “Campaign for Ending Hunger” has raised more than $4.3 million to help end hunger in Maine. York County Audubon presents the Joy of Birding... Why Birds Do What They Do, with Mike Shannon. We all remember when some aspect of bird behavior caught our attention. Shannon is retired from Unity College where he taught ornithology. A former director of the Audubon Ecology Camp in Maine (Hog Island), he has also served as master naturalist for the Massachusetts Audubon Society. The evening programs are free and are held in the Mather Auditorium of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm, 342 Laudholm Farm Rd, Wells. Refreshments at 6:30 pm, program at 7 pm. “Maine and Emancipation” at Historical Society

SOUTH BERWICK – Maine’s mixed reaction to the North vs. South conflict over slavery will be the subject of a talk at 7:30 pm Thursday, September 27, at Berwick Academy’s Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street. The talk by Brad Fletcher falls five days after the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, announcing the end of slavery in the rebellious South to take effect January 1, 1863. According to Fletcher, an upper school history teacher at Berwick Academy, the Emancipation Proclamation was not overwhelmingly supported in the Northern states, even though it remains the single most important act performed by any American president. There was a decidedly mixed reaction in the North, including in the State of Maine, which was itself born of the sectional conflict over slavery only decades before. Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln’s vice-president, was

from Paris, Maine. Fletcher will examine Maine’s attitude towards slavery, as well as the way its politicians, journalists, citizens and soldiers helped shape, and responded to, Lincoln’s historic decree.

The upcoming program is part of the Old Berwick Historical Society’s 2012 series of talks. Admission is by donation. More information is available at info@oldberwick.org, or (207) 384-0000.

She told the group that she has studied electrical engineering and was employed in the summer of 2012 in a marketing department creating graphic design. Clukey has been a motivational speaker appearing at Maine high schools for the past

two years. She estimates she has spoken to 10,000 students in that time period. “Anytime I get to meet new kids it’s great,” said Clukey. “I’m always amazed by no matter where I go. There’s great kids everywhere and they all have goals of their own and I love talking to them.” Clukey competed in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and is training to compete in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. At Wells High School, Clukey also participated with senior class officers in panel discussions on freshman life. Between panel discussions she met students and signed posters.

...FARM from page 11 trapping, cross country skiing, bird watching and other forms of passive recreation, all uses that will continue under the conservation agreement. With a total project cost of just over $1 million, the funding from the federal government is a critical milestone for KLT, but there are many other partners that have played important roles thus far. Last May, the Town of Kittery authorized $100,000 to the project, half of which was from the Open Space Account and half from the Wetlands Mitigation Fund. In June, voters in Eliot approved a contribution of $25,000 from the Open Space Account for the conservation of Rustlewood Farm, and the Great Works Regional Land Trust has pledged to raise $25,000 for the project. Despite these fundraising successes, KLT still needs to raise $350,000 to complete the deal. The group is looking for support from businesses, foundations and individuals to reach the milliondollar goal in 2013. The kick-off to engage the community with the beauty and values of Rustlewood Farm will be a Farm Day party on October 20. This free, family-oriented celebration will

include hay rides, games and cow patty bingo, nature walks, food and entertainment. The party is open to all and will be held at Rustlewood Farm, 110 Wilson Road, in Kittery from 11 am to 3 pm. The Great Works Regional Land Trust will be launching its fundraising effort with a discussion and screening of a short film about Rustlewood Farm from 12:30-3 pm on Saturday, September 29 at the Eliot Grange Hall. Learn more about this event at info@gwrlt.org. For more information visit www.kitterylandtrust.org, or call 207-439-8989. Michael E. Danis, 57 WELLS – Michael E. Danis of Buzzell Road, age 57, died Saturday, September 8, 2012 in York Hospital after a long illness. He was born May 27, 1955 in Biddeford, Maine, a son of Edward and Patricia (Moulen) Danis. Michael was a graduate of Wells High School where he was a member of the football and basketball teams and also played tuba in the school band. Mike was an avid outdoorsman his entire life. He never passed up a chance to go on a hunting trip with his buddies to the great Northern woods of Maine. He also enjoyed fishing, especially at Wells Harbor where he went every time he found a chance. Mike had worked on the

railroad in Conway, NH for many years and also painted submarines at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Before his illness, he was a self-employed interior painter. In 2003, Michael married his love, Crystal Johnson, and together they shared nine years of marriage living up to their vows of “in sickness and in health”. Crystal cared for him throughout several years of sickness, remembering the happy

man she had married. He is survived by his wife Crystal Johnson Danis, and her family, Malcolm, Dyantha, Scott and Brian Johnson all of Wells, his father Edward Danis of Wells, two brothers; David Danis and his wife Faye of Springvale, Thomas Danis and his wife Nicole of Wells; two sisters, Doreen Lerner and husband Miguel and Rebecca Danis, all of Florida; a nephew Cole Danis and niece Ashley Danis. Michael will be sorely missed by his little dog, Gizmo, who has been a constant companion to him. An hour of visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 12 at 10 am immediately followed by a funeral service at 11 am at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, Maine. Online condolences may be made at www. JohnsonFuneralHomeME.com. (courtesy photo)

Ray Charles, George Clooney and James Earl Jones. He has also conducted the Czech National Symphony, the Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. “A lot of what Tim does is inspirational,” said Kenney, who has only been to Carnegie Hall once, as a patron to see a classical music concert. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s an incredibly prestigious place.” Kenney plans to work with some familiar faces from the Ogunquit Playhouse, who will be collaborating on the project. Kenney is in his seventh season at the Ogunquit Playhouse, and he is already looking to next year. “Although we are working on the current production (“Buddy, the Buddy Holly Story”), we’re already working furiously on the 8th (season),” he said. “The seacoast has been a great partner with the playhouse.” Even with people interested in their digital devices, live theater continues to grow, he said. Kenney credits “the support network, from the community, the board, and the talented actors and actresses that are drawn here. The seacoast is an incredibly cultured and intelligent community, and when you put out a strong piece, they react

to it. That’s not always the case in other parts of the country.” Kenney says he repeatedly hears from actors and actresses that “the audiences are smart; they really react to the material.” The final production of the season, “Buddy,” has some surprises in store. “The actors not only sing and dance and act,” Kenney said. “They also play the instruments.” The theater was fortunate to work with the original creators of the show from London’s West End, he said, and there will be “new songs in the show that haven’t been heard before.” After “Buddy,” Kenney will focus on “The Christmas Rose,” which will also feature the country’s premier concert boys choir, The American Boychoir, and internationally renowned and Ireland’s own Damhsa Dance Company. The evening’s proceeds will go to benefit The Open Hearts Foundation, which encourages people to live with an open heart in the face of adversity. Tickets go on sale September 28, at the Carnegie Hall box office. Call 212-247-7800 or visit carnegiehall.org. Tickets are discounted thirty percent the first four days they go on sale, from September 28 at 11 am until October 1 at 11:59 pm.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ York Art Association’s 18th Annual Art in the Park YORK – Rain or shine, billowy, white tents will once again speckle the lawn of York’s Moulton Park on Saturday, September 15 from 9 am to 4 pm as part of York Art Association’s 18th Annual Art in the Park event. Past YAA president Gloria Gustafson and her husband Paul Gustafson started this juried, fine arts, and craft fair in 1995 to benefit York Art Association. The first year drew only sixteen vendors. Over the years the event has grown, and it now features more than forty

artists, and craftsmen from all over New England. This all-day event is now a York Art Association tradition. Vendors are juried in, and consist of: painters, photographers, jewelers, potters, glass artists, and more. Sponsors for this year’s Art in the Park include: Russell Peterson of Peterson Associates, Susan Heckaman of Edward Jones, Wendy Tapley of Tapley Insurance, and Bobbie and Doug Gray of Doug Gray, DDS. Prizes will be given to the top three artists. Food from the American Legion is available for sale. This year York Art As-

sociation has also teamed up with the York Public Library to host their first ever kids’ art tent. Children will have the opportunity to try different forms of printmaking throughout the day, and enjoy a storytelling session with York Public Library’s Children’s librarian Kathleen Whalin. Admission is free, and parking is plentiful. Enjoy the work of some of New England’s finest artists and craftsmen. Be sure to also check out YAA’s “Works on Paper” show at the York Art Association gallery across the street.

Songs of the Sea to Ring in End of Capriccio Festival OGUNQUIT – Roll & Go Sea Shanties will close the 22nd annual Capriccio Festival of the Arts on Sunday September 16, at the Barn Gallery at 7:30 pm. Roll & Go is a Maine group of men and women who love to sing “sea shanties” and other songs of the sea. Over the past twenty years, their spirited performances have earned them a growing reputation among festival and concert goers in Maine and New England. The current roster of five people is a diverse mix of individuals. Eli Dale of Portland is an administrative assistant. Norris Dale of Portland is a quality control engineer. Dick Dufresne of Kennebunk is a retired high school guidance counselor. Charlie Ipcar of

Richmond is a landlord and energy efficient housing developer. Jeff Logan of Portland is an acupuncturist. Life on the sea was often short, brutal, lonely, and joyless for sailors, except for strong drink, flashgirls – and the solace of song. The songs they sang were generally for fun or to help with their work. Their recreational songs, called fo’c’sle or forebitters, were likely to be sung either in the crew’ quarters below or, in good weather, up on the fo’c’sle head with the singer sitting on the forebitts and the crowd off-watch lolling about. These songs tend to tell a good tale, sometimes ribald, sometimes wistful or melancholy. Their work songs, called shanties, are usually fairly short with solo lines and hearty choral refrains essential for

Begin the ArtWalk at any location, and parking is available at the public lots at Garden Street, Park Square and Grove Street, as well as at all individual gallery locations. raising the anchor, pumping the bilge or working the sails. With shanties, the sense of words is less important than the rhythm that helped the sailors to time their movements, to heave or haul together. Nowadays, both kinds of songs are more often sung ashore than at sea. The fo’c’sle songs keep their popularity because of their lusty lyrics, outrageous storylines, or historical content. The shanties are enjoyed chiefly because they give everyone a chance to join in heartily. With Roll & Go you’ll hear the old songs brought back to life, and some newer songs that highlight current conditions in our merchant marine and fishing industry. Buster Keaton’s ‘Cameraman’ at Leavitt Theatre with Live Music OGUNQUIT – He never smiled on camera, earning him the nickname of “the Great Stone Face.” But Buster Keaton’s comedies rocked Hollywood’s silent era with laughter throughout the 1920s. Acclaimed for their originality and clever visual gags, and admired for their realistic stories and authentic location shots, Keaton’s films remain popular crowd-pleasers today. See for yourself with a screening of ‘The Cameraman’ (1928), one of Keaton’s landmark feature films, on Friday, September 14 at 8 pm at the Leavitt Fine Arts Theatre, 259 Main St. Route 1, in Ogunquit. The program will be accompanied by live music performed by New Hampshire composer Jeff Rapsis. General admission is $10 per person. In addition the the feature-length ‘The Cameraman,’ several Keaton short comedies from earlier in his career will also be screened. Rapsis, a New Hampshirebased silent film musician, said the Keaton features were not made to be shown on television or viewed on home entertainment centers. In reviving them, the Leavitt aims to show silent film as they were meant to be seen—in high quality prints, on a large screen, with live music, and with an audience. Rapsis performs on a digital synthesizer that reproduces the texture of the full orches-

tra and creates a traditional “movie score” sound. For more information, call 207-646-3123 or visit www. leavittheatre.com.

WELLS – This week a little kitten weighing less than 4 ounces was rushed into our care. A wonderful young man and his son were walking through their neighborhood when the boy spied a tiny kitten crawling on the porch of a vacant house. The kitten was in great danger and totally helpless. Because he was only a couple days old, his eyes were not yet open and his umbilical cord still dangled from his little belly. In great need of the protective warmth and nourishment of his mother, the kitten cried pitifully. Where his mom and siblings had gone was a mystery. Only this little kitten was on the porch. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the man rushed the kitten to Safe Haven. We responded with warm towels, kitten formula and bottle feeding. The tiny fellow was so hungry he readily took to the nursing bottle, stopping only to yawn and snuggle deeper into the warm towels. Harry, as his rescuer named him, was taken into our foster care program where he is doing well and gaining weight. Unfortunately, it was too late for his sibling. Later in the day another search of the property found his sibling kitten lying alone, dead. Sadly, these two little kittens represent a fraction of the hundreds – if not thousands – of kittens born in our communities who suffer because their mothers are homeless or abandoned. Every day those of us working in rescue see the victims of people’s indifference, or their inability to pay to spay or neuter their animals. We receive countless calls from people with cats they don’t want or can’t keep, and calls about strays. When we rescue them, we see their faces, their fear and their sadness. Our days and nights are spent repair-

ing the physical and emotional injuries they’re suffering. Our wish is that everyone please help us stop this problem. This year has been the worst for cats being abandoned and surrendered by their owners. It’s never been more essential for us to be proactive in the fight to end the homelessness of cats and kittens in York County. We all know the economy is one of the culprits, but we can’t change the economy. So what can we do? Some of you have adopted or are fostering, donating or volunteering. Each of these help a great deal. We cannot do this alone. We need our friends and supporters to help us fight the fight.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK – Publication Correction Last week, there was an error in the article for Another Chance Animal Rescue: “One percent of the profits benefit the animals in our care” should in fact be “One hundred percent.” Meet Sylvester… Sylvester is a sweet natured easy going four-year-old Maine Coon cat who came back to the rescue when both his parents were diagnosed with debilitating illnesses. Sylvester was the joy in their lives and it truly was a difficult decision for the family to give up this family member. Sylvester is looking for an

But there is another thing that we can all do which would make an incredible difference. Actively encourage others to have their cats spayed or neutered. How many people do you know with cats who are not spayed or neutered? If it’s a financial issue, there are many low-cost spay-neuter clinics that will help. Some even offer transportation for the kitty! If it’s simply that the person just hasn’t gotten around to it, please don’t let them never get around to it! Cats reach sexual maturity at six months. Yes, that adorable little kitten that’s just a half-year old could easily get pregnant. Your unaltered male cat is contributing to hundreds of kittens being born every year. Please talk to every pet owner you know. Encourage and help them get their cats fixed. Maine’s statewide program is Help Fix ME at 1-800-367-1317. Their website lists the towns and gives prices and info on other clinics to go to. Low-income residents, as well as residents of Sanford-Springvale and Biddeford, can get help at nearly no cost!

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – Another Successful Strut Your Mutt Strut Your Mutt is the single largest fundraiser for the Animal Welfare Society which was was held on September 9 on Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk. The event was attended by more than 250 people and their four-footed companions. It raises much needed funds for the shelter’s animal medical care budget, known as the Sadie Fund. This year’s event raised more than $65,000. “We are incredibly grateful to the community for once again coming out and supporting this important event,” said Kerrie Leclair, director of development at the shelter. Indoor pets (kittens only): Semi-socialized kittens have the potential to become good pets if their adopter has the time and dedication to handle them consistently and very often. This can be a long process depending on the kitten’s personality & temperament, and the amount of time and effort on the owner’s part. Care needs to be taken to avoid getting bitten or scratched in the process. A slow and gentle approach is recommended. This takes time and continued effort to achieve, but can be very rewarding. Indoor/outdoor homes: These cats and kittens can be adopted as indoor/outdoor cats to adopters that would like a cat to watch and care for, but don’t need their cat to be social and affectionate.

“Alice” Alice is an adorable little two-year-old who would love to meet you. She is a sweet girl who loves both cuddle time and playtime. Alice likes other dogs and older respectful children.

Barn cats: These cats spend time in and around the barn, garage or shed they have been housed and fed in. They enjoy living free in the outdoors doing as cats do, and usually stay around their home turf. They will continue to by shy and skittish around people. Barn cats do best in groups and should not be the only cat. Regardless of the type of home they get adopted to, they will all have the same basic requirements. They need shelter from predators and the elements, clean water and a healthy diet. They will also need a slow introduction to their new living situations.

“Betty” Betty is beautiful three year old who loves her people. When you enter her room she will more than likely be one of the first kitties to greet you. She loves attention and will soak up all that is offered to her.

We have ‘em Semi-socialized cats, kittens and barn cats are available for adoption at the shelter. Please note that donations of goods are accepted Monday through Thursday & Saturdays. Please no Friday donations. Support For Life Our “Support For Life” program asks for the pledge of a $10 monthly donation. SPORTS York High School Wrestling Coach Travels to Thailand By Timothy Gillis Staff Columnist YORK – Bryan Thompson has his hands full. The wrestling coach and technology teacher at York High School just returned from an eight-day trip to Thailand where worked as an assistant apprentice coach with the US Junior National wrestling team. There was little time for him to recover from jetlag, however, as he had to be back at school, where he is organizing an iPad project for freshmen. Thompson, who also owns Hammerhead Wrestling Systems in York, said it was his third trip to the country, but the first time as part of the national wrestling program. “My brother Andrew was a middle school science teacher in downtown Bangkok, an international school on a college campus,” he said. “I went twice to visit him, but haven’t been back in eleven years.” The trip was a real eyeopener for him, even after fifteen years of experience coaching York’s varsity wrestling team. “All the former Soviet republics are well-represented. They wrestle to win,” Thompson said. “The difference between these countries and the US is that, for them, it’s a meal ticket. It’s a living. It means much more to them. It shows in the way they warm up and compete.” Thompson traveled to Pattaya, Thailand as part of USA Wrestling’s Coaching Apprentice Program. He was one of ten coaches across the nation selected for the trip, where he worked “assisting national staff, Olympic coaches for men’s Greco-Roman, men’s freestyle, and women’s freestyle, each with eight weight

classes at the junior level.” The ten apprentice coaches assist the national team staff in terms of scouting and video analysis. When Jason Bryant, communications and social media director for USA wrestling, found out that Thompson was writing a blog about the trip, he earned himself another task, that of social media assistant. Thompson’s posts can be read at hammerheadwrestling.wordpress.com. No wrestlers from Maine made the journey, but Thompson still feels local athletes will benefit from his experience. “It’s an effort to improve the grassroots programs, so kids in local programs will become interested,” he said. Thompson started Hammerhead Wrestling last year, and the club uses all three types of wrestling - folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman. “Maine high schools use folkstyle wrestling,” Thompson explained. “It’s an American invention that’s been around since Abraham Lincoln, who was a folkstyle wrestler.” Folkstyle is about control, he said, adding that a combatant can’t clasp his or her hands around an opponent’s body when in the down position. “Freestyle is more about throws and using a variety of clasped-hands procedures to score points,” he said. “Freestyle is much easier to score points, whereas folkstyle is about getting the opponent down to the mat as quickly as possible.” At York High School, he wrestles with technology as an integration specialist, working with teachers, students, and staff to help them use the latest computer resources.

Boys & Girls Basketball Camp WELLS – Beginning Saturday, September 22, a seven-week session of Basketball Camp will be held at Messiah Christian Church Recreation Outreach Center (ROC) on Route 1 in Wells. Camp is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for kids in grades 2-3, and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. for kids in grades 4-6. Cost is $30 per session. The boys’ and girls’ Basketball Camp is intended to teach players the fundamentals of basketball, including dribbling, passing, and shooting. The program is committed to providing high quality, wellorganized instruction in a safe, Christian environment.

The camp director is Pastor Dan Moore. Moore earned a spot in the National Basketball Hall of Fame. His semi-professional career was with the Birmingham Stars. “Pastor Dan” loves basketball, and hopes to pass on the love of the game. For information and to sign up, call Messiah Church at 207-985-9287.

“We’re rolling out an iPad project for all 9th graders,” he said. “We’re targeting this spring, but this fall we’re doing some piloting.” Thompsonsaid that, though the start of any school year is busy, the Thailand trip was a great experience. His wife, Mary Jo, teaches at Village Elementary School in York. The wrestling club started an academic branch this year, and she will be offering tutoring to members. Their son, Ronan, 8, goes to Village School and is already wrestling for the

tied to academics.” Visit www.hammerheadwrestling.com for more information on the club, which starts up October 1.

of Comedy, Harvey brings his ‘tell-it-like-it-is’ brand of humor to center stage where he keeps audiences in stitches for the show’s 14th season in national syndication. Families travel from all over the country to compete for big cash prizes on the set of Family Feud, and enjoy a great bonding experience while they’re at it. When the show is over, fans can connect for breaking news on Twitter (@FamilyFeud), find outtakes and behind the scenes footage on YouTube (www.youtube.com/familyfeud <http://www.youtube.com/ familyfeud> ) and even face off against friends and family on Facebook.
