9th Annual York Marketfest Next Saturday YORK The York Village Association, in partnership with the Museums of Old York and the First Parish Church, is pleased to announce the 9th annual York Marketfest. This year the festival will be celebrated on September 22 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The festivities will be held in quaint York Village on the grounds of the Museums of Old York and the First Parish Church on Route 1A (York Street). York Marketfest is a community-based event which raises

money for local charities. This event is free and open to everyone. Each year dozens of artisans, entertainers, and food providers are at the festival. Attendees can shop for a variety of unique hand-crafted items. There will be painters, jewelers, potters, herb and spice vendors, photographers, and Americana artisans. This year there will also be demonstrations by crafters to help attendees gain insight into a unique aspect of their work. For an up-to-date list of artisans,

Kennebunk Steps up to Climate Challenge

KENNEBUNK The Town of Kennebunk has committed to actively address climate disruption in their August Select Board meeting by unanimously agreeing to sign on to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy to inventory greenhouse gasses; assess where the Town could most effectively begin to cut those emissions; sand take other positive action towards addressing climate change challenges. The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) is an international alliance of cities and local governments with a shared long-term vision of a world where committed mayors and local governments ~ in alliance with partners ~ accelerate ambitious, measura-

ble climate and energy initiatives that lead to an inclusive, just, low-emission and climate resilient future. The GCoM serves cities and local governments of all sizes in all parts of the world, by mobilizing and supporting ambitious, measurable, planned climate and energy action in their communities by working with city/regional networks, national governments and other partners to achieve that shared vision. Making the Great Bay Greater

BERWICK Since colonial settlement 400 years ago the unique environmental gem we know in the Seacoast as the “Great Bay Estuary� has come under increasing developmental pressure. Early on the ships carrying new settlers navigated through the mouth of the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth and landed at all the tidal rivers in the bay. Within

decades commerce, mills, trade, population and agriculture all grew in this pristine area. All have presented various ecological impacts as they waxed and waned over the course of time. The Berwick Historical Society will host a talk with Great Bay-Piscataqua Waterkeeper Melissa Paly at the House of Hope in Berwick on September 19 at 7 p.m. to discuss current

issues and answer questions about the challenges confronting the Great Bay ecosystem. Melissa works for the Conservation Law Foundation with a range of federal, state, regional, municipal and town agencies and departments to advocate for better land use practices, improved water quality, and restoration of the rivers and bays of the Seacoast region of NH and Maine. Melissa holds a Bachelor’s degree in geology

and a Master of Forest Science, both from Yale University. She is a past president of the Kittery Land Trust. She also serves on the boards of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust and Yale School of Forestry Alumni Council. The House of Hope is the

Historical Society Welcomes Fall with History Walk & Talk WELLS The Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit continues their popular program, History Walk & Talk, through the fall season with walking tours of the places and spot of historic significance with historian and author Joe Hardy. On Saturday, Sept. 15, participants will take a tour of the historic cemeteries of Wells. The programs start 10 a.m. at the Historical Society of Wells & Ogunquit on 938 Post Road (Route One) in Wells. From there, participants will be guided to carpool to several locations. The cost is $5, and is free for members of the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit. Hope M. Shelley, Wells Town Historian, writes, “Wells has many cemeteries containing headstones with distinctive decoration depicting the social periods of our 370 plus years of settlement. In the 1920s and ‘30s, Judge Lester Bragdon researched and documented many of them by location, family and inscribed notations. By the 1980s the volunteer Cemetery Committee of the Historical Society began to search for those that Judge Bragdon had noted. In the process not only were more cemetery locations found but also more burials were noted. In 1994, through site visits, the measurements of the

cemetery perimeters, conditions of the stones, family names and the GPS coordinates were noted for nearly 1/3 of the two hundred cemetery locations in Wells. In 2013-2014 the Town of Wells embarked on a Cemetery maintenance program in an effort to locate, clean-up, photograph and locate the cemeteries in Town.� Joe Hardy is the author of “History of a Maine ‘Little River’�, “Settlement & Abandonment on Tatnic Hill: An Eclectic History of Wells, Maine, 1600-1900�, and “Four American Stories: Emigration and the Lure of the West�. Currently completing her first term in the Maine House, Representative Sampson has been a champion for localized, student- and parent-driven schooling and has recently founded the Young Leadership Caucus to educate, equip and engage the next generation in fact-based civics and civic engagement through an in-depth examination of the founding principles embodied in our Constitution. Berwick Public Library to hold Interstate Book Discussion

Ukulele Group at the Library KENNEBUNK The Kennebunk Free Library staff was blown away by the amount of interest in our recent “Introduction to Ukulele� class. So, beginning on Wednesday, September 19, we will be hosting a regular ukulele group. At 5:30 p,m., we will be offer a brief lesson to less experienced players, discussing technique and learning chords. At 6 p.m., everyone from beginners to experts can drop in for the fun of playing with an enthusiastic group. The library has a limited number of ukuleles available. Please let us know if you will need to borrow one. We will do our best to accommodate you. This program is free and wheelchair accessible. BERWICK The Berwick Public Library will hold an interstate book discussion group Saturday, September 15, with the Manheim, PA, Community Library. Berwick Public Library Director Sharon Kelly said this summer Children’s Librarian Shilo Fiel began a pen-pal project with the Manheim library which is in Lancaster County. From that connection, Kelly said the director of the Manheim library contacted her, to introduce himself and pick up the lead from the children’s librarians. “From there we realized that we both had very nice and active book discussion groups monthly, and that perhaps they would like to also be ‘pen-pals’! Which, both groups did!� said Kelly. To “meet in person,� the libraries decided to discuss a book from the Great American Read list - A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving. On Saturday, September 15, at 10:30 a.m., the two groups will meet

each other via Google Hangout, an internet video conferencing portal, to discuss the book. The internet book discussion session will be held in the conference room of the Berwick Public Library, and all are welcomed, even those who have not read the book. Kelly said, “It just goes to show you that from Maine to Pennsylvania, the similarities, not the differences, are what bring people together!� The Berwick Public Library is located at 103 Old Pine Hill Road. ~ News ~ Eiot Family Selected for New Habitat Home YORK COUNTY Habitat for Humanity York County is preparing to begin construction of its 29th home this fall, and recently selected the family to purchase the Springvale home. Richard and Missy Lathrop of Eliot received the news in July that they had been selected for homeownership with Habitat for Humanity. “Learning about the opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity and to possibly look to achieve the goal of home ownership was a dream opportunity that we felt for sure would only be a thought and a wish, but never a reality,� said Richard. “Since learning that we have been the selected family to take part in this opportunity it has truly been life changing!! This house and opportunity for us means stability in our life so that we can provide a constant growing and learning environment for our kids and our family.� Applicants for the home underwent a rigorous review process by Habitat’s Family Services Committee. Applicants must demonstrate a need for

better housing and be able to meet income/payment requirements on the new home. The selected family must also put in 400 hours of sweat equity hours by working on the construction of their own home, attending financial management classes, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. When the home is completed, families purchase homes through an affordable mortgage that is recycled to support the construction of more Habitat for Humanity homes. Amy Nucci, Executive Director, said, “Rich and Missy are genuinely excited for this opportunity and what it means for their family. We are thankful for all the donors and sponsors whose generosity has and will help make safe, stable and affordable housing a reality for the Lathrop family.� A three-bedroom home will be built on Kirk Street in Springvale. In early 2018, Habitat for Humanity York County purchased the vacant property by working with Sanford’s Land Bank Authority and the property owner. The new home will

A Walk to Raise the Roof and Pancake Breakfast at the First Baptist Church in Springvale on September 15 will assist in funding the construction of the home and will kick-off construction of the new house. Funding for Habitat homes comes from a variety of sources, including individual donations, sponsorships, in-kind donations, and grants. Habitat is continuing to raise funds and seek in kind donations to meet its goal of

9th Annual Shaker Hill Apple Festival

ALFRED York County Shelter Programs (YCSP) is hosting its 9th annual Shaker Hill Apple Festival on Saturday, September 22 and Sunday September 23. The two-day festival draws over 8,000 people to its 300 -acre campus at 147 Shaker Hill, in Alfred. This year’s festival will include live entertainment, food and craft vendors, a pancake breakfast, apple picking, activities for the kids, and more. Proceeds from the festival support YCSP’s goals to end homelessness, hunger, and addiction. YCSP provides York County families and adults with

emergency shelter and food, and, if needed substance abuse and mental health treatment. The organization also operates two residential treatment facilities; Angers Farm in West Newfield and Layman’s Way in Alfred, a food pantry, and 120 long-term housing units. Its Jobs Training Program provides people in its care the opportunity to learn new marketable skills. “Though this is a very important fundraiser for us, it is not about making money. We want folks to come out and just enjoy the activities and each other,� stated YCSP’s Chief Executive Officer, Bob Dawber.

II Museum Lecture Offers Informative Insights WELLS Michael Culver, executive director of the Wright World War II Museum in Wolfeboro, N.H. will give a free presentation at South Coast Senior College at York County Community College, 112 College Drive in Wells at 10:30 on Wednesday, September 19. His museum, located an hour from Wells, was opened in 1994 by the late David Wright to fulfill his dream to create a public understanding and appreciation of the contributions made by World War II-era Americans both at home and on battlefields around the world. The Wright tells the story of America in the years 1939 to 1945. Its collections and exhibitions include military vehicles, armaments, uniforms, pictures, posters, films and thousands of other items and memorabilia to help today’s generations understand the history changing events of World War II. Its unique attention to how Americans at home dealt with

and contributed to the war effort separates the Wright Museum from most others. In many ways, the museum pays homage to the “Greatest Generation.” In his talk, Culver will introduce the audience to the museum and its amazing collections, tell some of the stories that it preserves in its displays and answer questions about the era and the museum. ‘Jersey Boys’ A Rousing, Rocking Tribute To The Four Seasons At Ogunquit Playhouse

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT They’re rocking and rolling and dancing in the aisles at the Ogunquit Playhouse, thanks to a fabulous production Jersey Boys on stage here through late October. More than a jukebox musical, where cast members rock out hit after hit and no plot is involved, Jersey Boys is the behind-the-scenes story of real-life Jersey boys Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. With high-energy singing, dancing and acting, it details their ups, downs, triumphs and tragedies as they rise to fame in the ‘60s with mega-hits starting with “Sherry.” But it isn’t all best buddy friendship as the story traces the years from their early days singing in seedy clubs and bowling alleys and getting busted and sent to jail to their astounding success after “Sherry” to their eventual breakup and ultimate reunion years later when they are inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Over the course of the 2-1/2- hour show, each band member takes a turn narrating the story, adding different points of view to the tale. Brash Tommy DeVito, played with swagger and an on-target Jersey accent by Matt Magnusson, starts things off and takes pride as the band’s leader.

“We put Jersey on the map,” he boasts gleefully. But, the band is stuck in a rut, despite lead singer Frankie Valli and his angelic voice. Jonathan Mousset, a dead ringer for the young Valli, both vocally and physically, is wonderful in his role and elicited several standing ovations on opening night. Things change when songwriter Bob Gaudio, played by talented Andy Christopher, joins the group to play keyboards and write their songs. Gaudio, who penned the 1957 novelty hit “Who Wears Short Shorts” at age 15, is introduced to the group by another Jersey boy Joe Pesci, portrayed by Sean Burns. “I had to write for this voice,” says Gaudio (Christopher) when he hears Valli sing. Gaudio’s talents work like a charm and he churns out hit after hit for the group — “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “December ’63 (Oh What a Night),” “My Eyes Adored You,” “Dawn Go Away,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” and “Bye Bye Baby” among them. The fourth bandmate Nick Massi, subtly portrayed by Matthew Amira, is, in his words, the group’s Ringo Starr. Overshadowed by the others, he fades into the background thanks to DeVito’s brashness, Valli’s voice and Gaudio’s musical chops.

Cosy Sheridan to Play at KAA KITTERY National award-winning songwriter and guitarist Cosy Sheridan will perform in concert with her longtime musical partner Kent Allyn on Friday, September 21, at the Kittery Art Association, 8 Coleman Avenue, Kittery Point. Full of energy and emotion, Cosy’s songs are carefully crafted for her percussive and bluesy guitar style. Written in open tunings and played occasionally with two or more capos on the guitar, Cosy’s lyrics have been described by Sing Out Magazine as intelligent and clever “with stickable melodies.” Her concerts are a wide-ranging exploration of styles and themes, including love songs for a complicated world along with signature parodies on aging and the lives of women. Cosy’s CD “Pretty Bird” has been listed with Sing Out Magazine’s Great CDs of 2014. Kent Allyn is a virtuoso on many instruments including piano, bass, and guitar. He was voted MVP of the seacoast region by the Portsmouth Herald. Kent plays with many bands and folk musicians in the area, including Susie Burke and David Surette, Cormac McCarthy, and Ben Baldwin and the Big Note. He teaches bass and piano at Berwick Academy. Cosy and Kent first started performing together in 1989, when they recorded her first CD “Late Bloomer” at legendary Fishtraks Recording Studio on Congress Street in Portsmouth. They have continued their partnership, playing many concerts and recording another 10 albums together. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 concert. Several members of Seacoast Ruggers participated in making the rug, a process that took several months. “This exhibition celebrates the artistry and tradition of rug-hooking,” said Historic New England South Berwick Site Manager Marilyn Keith Daly, “and collaboration and community as well.”

Maine Red Cross Responds to Hurricane PORTLAND The American Red Cross is preparing a large relief effort across multiple states as Hurricane Florence continues its march toward the East Coast. So far, five Maine Red Crossers have been activated and are heading to Virginia from the Portland International Jetport. The Red Cross is preparing to help as many as 100,000 people in the affected areas and is working with state and local officials to identify and prepare evacuation shelters. Health & Fitness Putting the Brakes on Breast Cancer

KITTERY Throughout October automotive repair shops across the country are looking to end breast cancer with a unique fundraising campaign. Autoworks, Inc. in Kittery and more than 100 other Independent Auto Repair Shops across the US are raising funds for a breast cancer vaccine as part of the Brakes for Breast fundraiser. As part of the fundraiser, the auto repair facilities are giving away FREE (quality) brake pads or shoes. The customer simply pays the labor and any other ancillary parts necessary to complete the

brake job and the shops then donate 10% of the brake job directly to Dr. Vincent Tuohy & the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Research Fund. 100% of the donations goes directly to research! This is the seventh year for the Brakes For Breasts fundraiser and to date, donations

total to over $600,000! This is the fourth year Autoworks in Kittery has participated in this fundraiser. Last year, 24 lucky customers joined the fundraiser and received free brake pads. Help Autoworks put the brakes on breast cancer. More information is available at www.auto-works.com.

Calm the Chaos on School Mornings Mornings can test the patience and stamina of busy families as adults and children hurry to get out the door on time. Starting off the morning already stressed can lead to feeling tense throughout the rest of the day. There is no magic formula to make mornings less hectic, but the following are some ways families can streamline their morning routines. • Make use of the night before. Morning madness may come about due to lack of preparation the previous night. The more that can be done the night before, the less there will be to do on weekday mornings. Encourage children to lay out clothes for the next day and take a shower or bath that evening. Make lunches the night before a school day, and gather all supplies from homework stations, restocking backpacks and gym bags so everything is ready to go come the morning. • Get to bed earlier. Sleep experts say that if you need to rely on an alarm clock to get up in the morning, you may not be getting enough sleep. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children should get between nine and 11 hours of sleep a night. Teenagers require between eight and 10 hours of sleep per night, while adults need

between seven and nine hours. A good night’s rest can reduce morning crankiness and get everyone moving more efficiently. • Incentivize timeliness for kids. Children who are reluctant to head to school may need extra motivation to get out the door. Offer small rewards to kids when they get ready on their own or finish breakfast in a certain amount of time. Rewards can include a treat like choosing a favorite show to watch after school or a special outing on the weekend. • Follow a schedule. Make mornings the same each day so everyone knows what to expect. Uniformity can streamline tasks and ensure everyone knows what’s expected of them. • Stay organized. Racing around trying to find keys or jackets can be very stressful. Make it a point to return items to their proper places so that everyone knows where to look for the items they need. Health & Fitness Symptoms of Dyslexia Learning disabilities can make it difficult for kids to reach their full potential. Such disabilities can sometimes be hard to spot, and youngsters might be hesitant to self-report symptoms or problems they’re experiencing out of shame or a fear of being seen as different from their classmates. Dyslexia, which the Child MindŽ Institute notes is now part of the diagnosis “specific learning disorder,� an umbrella term that groups together reading, writing and math disorders, is one type of learning disability that can compromise students’ abilities to perform in the classroom. The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity notes that the signs of dyslexia can appear as early as preschool. Such signs may differ depending on the age of the child, but parents can look for the following ones that might indicate the presence of dyslexia. Preschool Preschool-aged children may exhibit various symptoms that may be indicative of dyslexia. Difficulty learning and remembering the names of letters in the alphabet and an inability to recognize letters in their own names are such symptoms. Children who mispronounce familiar words, continue to speak in “baby talk� and experience trouble learning common nursery rhymes also may be experiencing dyslexia. The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity also notes that dyslexia tends to run in families, so parents who had their own difficulties reading and/or spelling words should pay special attention to how

read out loud. Kids in this age group who are dealing with dyslexia also may not have a strategy for reading new words. Children in this age group also may exhibit signs of dyslexia through their speech. For example, the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity says some may search for a specific word only to end up using a vague term, such as “stuff.� Hesitation when speaking and language peppered with “um’s� is another potential indicator that a child might be dyslexic. Dyslexia cannot be cured, but it can be overcome. Early screening, diagnosis and intervention can help young people become successful adults. More information is available at www. dyslexia.yale.edu. WELLS With this transition of seasons comes an urgency. Colder weather creates hardships for homeless animals so be sure your indoor kitties do not get out and get lost and if you see a stray, please feed it and give it fresh water. Ask your neighbors if the cat has a home or report it to your local animal control officer. Just don’t ignore a stray. Safe Haven opened our arms to nine kitties from midcoast Maine to give them a chance at life. To help them out, Safe Haven brings their overflow to our beautiful adoption center in Wells. Three arrived very fearful. One, considered “untouchable,� had dense matts on his back and a bloody paw. Our volunteer Maud scooped him up and took him to our vet. Boomer’s back had to be shaved to eliminate his matts. Turned out his bloody paw was caused by an ingrown claw. It had grown so long that it curled back and dug into his paw pad. If you’ve ever had an ingrown toenail, you know how painful that is. With his nails trimmed and his body free of pain, suddenly this “untouchable� turned into a happy cat who loves being petted! Everyone at the vet office was as excited as we were to see this amazing transformation. Boomer is doing fine and will be available soon. All the new arrivals will be available for adoption after their medical treatment, including spaying and neutering. Our cat

care team is already short-staffed so why not volunteer and help! FMI: 207-646-1611. Our Thrift Shop, next to the Wells IGA, welcomes quality donations of your unwanted home dÊcor, seasonal clothing, fall and Christmas dÊcor, jewelry, jewelry-making supplies, craft supplies, fashion accessories, functional housewares, towels and clean linens. NORTH BERWICK This long haired black beauty “Fifeâ€? is quite a character. At approximately 2 ½ yrs old, Fife came to us last Fall as a stray found wandering around someone’s barn. She was not feral by any means, in fact, quite the opposite! She just wanted food and some much needed petting! And while the people considered keeping her as a barn cat, they felt the indoor life for this sweet girl seemed more fitting. She loves to play, is mischievous, is super funny and requires very little in life. A cozy cat bed, perches to hang out on, windows to watch wildlife, some toys and affection. She loves treats and while too busy to sit still and be a lap cat, she does enjoy being pet and loves to purr! Fife is up to date on all of her vetting and seeks a family with either older children, a couple or single person. Dogs are an unknown, but with gradual introductions, we bet Fife could be persuaded to coexist with one. Anastasia is a sweet 8 year old dog. She came to AWS as a stray in need of lots of love and TLC. She was covered with fleas and had lost most of her hair. Upon receiving a bath and proper flea meds, she began to feel better. A full bloodwork panel revealed several chronic health issues, not uncommon to senior pets. With medication and a healthy diet, she is on the way to recovery. She’d love to be the one and only pooch in her new home - and who can blame her? ~ Obituaries ~ Wes Barbour, 73 YORK – Wes Barbour of Cape Neddick, died from pneumonia on Thursday, September 6, at York Hospital. He is greatly missed by his wife Chris, daughter Karen, son Daniel, and brothers Jay and Bill and their families. After serving the Air Force as an F-100 pilot, he became a commercial photographer in Wells and York, and taught at Wells High School. This gradually morphed into his computer consulting and programming business, teaching computer courses at UNH and elsewhere, and managing the computer systems for the Wells schools and others. Cecile I. Fournier, 97 SOUTH BERWICK – Cecile I. (LePage) Fournier, of Dogwood Drive, went to be with her Lord on August 29, being blessed with life on Earth for 97 years. Born May 11, 1921 in Berlin, NH, she was the fifth child and first daughter of ten children born to John and Eva (Gilbert) LePage. Cecile gradu-

ated from Sainte Regis Academy in 1938 and Berlin High School in 1940. She was a member of Sainte Anne Church, and member of the Daughters of Sainte Anne. She worked in the Brown Company Tower Room until she was 21years old when she took on the role “Homemaker/Mother� for her four younger sisters, after the untimely death of their mother, as her four older brothers served in the Armed Forces during WWII. In 1948, she married the love of her life, Leo P. Fournier. They made their home in Portsmouth until Leo’s untimely passing 7/10/66. Cecile was devoted to her husband and her family and will be forever loved by her son, Cary Fournier of Webster, NY, daughter Mary and her husband Gregory “Joe� Griffin of South Berwick; two grandchildren, Michelle and her husband Shane Moffett of Livermore Falls, ME and Gregory Griffin and his wife Jennifer of Oregon; eight great-grandchildren, Logan, Ava, Eli, Avigail, Anna and Nolan Moffett, Ariana and Savana Griffin, sister Doris and her husband William Stuart of Columbus, NC and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held on September 15, at St Anne’s Church (Parish of the Good Shepherd), Berlin, NH. Burial services will commence at St. Kieran’s Cemetery following the mass. Stella Gagne Roberts, 89 NORTH BERWICK – Stella G. Roberts of North Berwick, formerly of Concord, NH, died peacefully on Sunday, August 26 at the Bellamy Fields Assisted Living Facility in Dover, NH, with her

children by her side. Born in Sanford on February 19, 1929, Stella Marie was the fourth of five children of Amedee and Imelda (Ross) Gagne. A child of the Great Depression, Stella assisted from an early age in the operation of the family business, Gagne’s Supermarket. She graduated Saint Ignatius High School and attended Saint Joseph College in Standish. During a summer outing to Wells Beach she met the love of her life, Harland Roberts, of North Berwick, whom she married in 1950. Following Harland’s military service at Fort Bragg, NC, and Korea, they settled in Concord and raised their family. Stella worked for the NH Department of Health and Human Services as a statisti-

cian and welfare fraud investigator. Upon retiring to North Berwick in 1987, she enjoyed the company of nearby siblings and extended family. She also found pleasure in traveling to Europe and Central America, visiting Canadian cousins, and researching the Gagne-Ross family genealogy. She delighted in preparing holiday feasts for her family, attending her grandchildren’s activities, hosting fall leaf-raking parties at the farm, and sharing her Bauneg Beg Lake camp with friends and family. Stella particularly treasured her late night book reads, and a succession of faithful dogs. She will be greatly missed by her son, Stephen (Paula) Roberts of Concord, NH; her daughters, Susan (Kenneth) Craigue of Concord, NH, and Martha Roberts (Merrell Clarke) of Spring-

Raised in the cornfields of Illinois, Madeline spent many years on the farm with her grandparents Wilbur and Verna “Denna� Woods in the tiny town of Paw Paw, IL. Madeline played a significant role in helping to raise her siblings and served as a motherly role model and bigsister to them all throughout her lifetime. She graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1950 and worked in finance at Standard Oil Company of Indiana for years before relocating to Maine. After marrying the love of her life, Charlie, in 1955, they established their home in Eliot,

where they enjoyed 54 “glorious, fun-filled years� together while raising their children Diana L. Marzinzik of Eliot and Michael R. Welts of Stratham, NH. Madeline took great pride in raising her children, providing a lifetime of love, laughter, support and teaching the value of family. Madeline constantly re-defined the meaning of motherhood and selfless giving and care, always at her children and grandchildren’s side. Madeline was known by many for her beautiful, endless smile, her passion and neverending love for her children, grandchildren, great grandbabies, and for her magical way of making everyone feel uniquely special and treasured. In her many years of living in Eliot, she became recognized as the welcoming “red head� behind the counter at Osco Drug in Kittery, and the beautiful makeup artist at Porteous at the Newington Mall. While initially a corn-field bred girl, she quickly became a lover of the ocean and beaches where she could be seen strolling along or going for one of her famous hours-long beach cruises. Madeline and Charlie traveled the world together and especially enjoyed their annual

“snowbirdâ€? excursions to their home in Cocoa Beach, FL where they wintered with many of their closest friends. Life was an adventure for her and Charlie, one that they were determined to live to the fullest with passion, joy and togetherness. Madeline was a giving soul and spent many years as a member and president of the Lioness Club of Eliot. Together with Charlie, they participated in many social activities which usually included the donation of one of Madeline’s incredible pies, pineapple upside-down cake, monkey bread or a classic pot of baked beans or scalloped potatoes. She was an incredible cook and baker, a gift and talent that she took great pride in sharing with her daughter and granddaughters who carry on her traditional recipes and cooking magic. Madeline’s children, Diana and son-in-law John Marzinzik of Eliot, and Michael and daughter-in-law Christine of Stratham, and a Brazilian exchange son, Rogerio Frossard of Rio de Janeiro, were the objects of her deepest joys. Her eight cherished grandchildren, Justin Strausser and his wife Marissa, Sean Strausser and his fiancĂŠ Megan, Mary Jo and Sara Marzinzik

and her husband Brian Horn, and Brittany, Danielle, Brendan and Connor Welts of Stratham were a constant source of pride and dear to her heart. Nothing brought more happiness to Madeline like the joy of her grandchildren. The recent addition of two identical twin great-granddaughters, Fiona and Sienna brought great joy and smiles to her world. Madeline’s extended family includes many nieces and nephews whom she remained close with and enjoyed throughout the years. Family was always Madeline’s first priority and they are eternally grateful to have been blessed and forever touched by her spirit. A private, family service will be held at the J.S. SPORTS Rotary Club Golf Tournament to Partner with Cameren Cousins Fundraiser WELLS The Wells Rotary Club will be hosting their 19th Annual Chuck Cumming Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, September 21 at Old Marsh Country Club in Wells. The event will be a “Scramble” format with the Shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Cost for a foursome is $500 (individual golfer $125) and includes greens fees, cart, goody bag, team mulligans, reception and luncheon. This year, the Wells Rotary Club will be donating up to 50% of the proceeds from the tournament to “Team Cam” Cous-

Cameren Cousins, a recent graduate of Wells High School, member of the Wells Warriors Class B South Championship baseball team and co-player of the year in the Western Maine Conference, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma. 2nd Annual Mount A Trail Challenge YORK York Parks and Recreation Department and the Friends of Mount A present the Second Annual Mount Agamenticus 5K and 1-Mile Trail Challenge on September 15. This event is geared toward improving overall health and wellness in our community. The event will feature a 5K trail challenge and a 1-mile trail challenge that participants can run or walk. The 1-mile course traverses the new Big A Universal Access trail and can accommodate all capabilities

and fitness levels, while adjoining trails offer even greater challenges for those navigating the 5K. “This is a wonderful way to bring folks together and enjoy the trails at the mountain- including our new Big A trail” says Robin Kerr, Conservation Coordinator for the York Parks and Recreation Department. “We celebrated the opening of this remarkable universal access trail two years ago and it’s been rewarding to see so many people of all abilities using it.”

The new Big A Trail, named after the former ski area once located at Mt. Agamenticus, provides access opportunities and improves the quality of life for everyone, including people with mobility disabilities, seniors, trail runners, and families with young children and strollers. The nature trail was built in accordance with the principles of universal design and now guides visitors along the grassy mountaintop and into the summit shrubland, offering resting and viewing opportunities along the way. “We heard that some folks were feeling a little intimidated at the thought of trail running at the mountain” continued Kerr. “But we really want to stress that this is not a typical road race. We are looking to cater to those hoping to establish their own personal record. The Big A is a perfect trail to train on, esp. if you are new to trail running, recovering from an injury, or just want to improve or maintain your own personal fitness level. Run it, walk it, hike it, just complete it!” For those wanting more of a challenge, the 5K offers steeper inclines taking participants down along the Ring Trail before finishing back on the summit of Mt. Agamenticus. Registrants are welcome to run or hike the courses. There will be some lucky prize winners. Consider bringing your own picnic lunch to enjoy at the summit after the award ceremony and then join in a celebration of your accomplishments with an after party at SOME Brewing Company. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. at the York County Courthouse. All participants must check in. Participants will be shuttled to Mount A. The first 50 participants to register will receive a

The roughly two-hour-long trips will launch from Cutts Island and meander through the salt marshes that abut KLT’s Brave Boat Headwaters Preserve. Participants will then paddle around the harbor before returning back to Cutts Island. This 150-acre preserve had been slated for a 27-lot subdivision in 2013 before KLT purchased the property, with the help of a loan, from a developer. The preserve now offers more than three miles of hiking and skiing trails and helps keep waters of Brave Boat Harbor clean and accessible to boaters and fishermen. The Brave Boat Headwaters Preserve and neighboring Rachel Carson National Wildlife Preserve together encompass more than 900 acres of protected land that offer high value habitat for wading birds and waterfowl, juvenile fish and shellfish, and a variety of sensitive and rare plants. The two preserves also fall within the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea Conservation Initiative’s (MtA2C) focus area, which includes more than 14,000 acres of undeveloped land from the top of Mt. A to the coast of Kittery. “We’re so pleased to have added permanently protected lands and resiliency to the natural gem that is Brave Boat Harbor,” says KLT Executive Director Christine Bennett. “Every year we look forward to exploring the pristine waters of this estuary with members of the community, to take a look from the water side at what the Headwaters Preserve has helped preserve.” This free event takes place on Friday, September 14 from 2:30-5 p.m. and participants should plan to bring their own boats and life preservers.
