Also present for the photo opp and dinner was Wells Town Manager Jonathan Carter and founding member of the newly formed Friends of Wells Harbor, Ryan Liberty. Both Carter and Liberty greeted students and offered comments with thanks to the group for their artistic contributions. The idea for the mural project took shape earlier in 2017 when Liberty met with Wells Harbor Master Chris Mayo to discuss various ways his organization could contribute to the
dock area. One of the ideas Mayo suggested was creating three large murals to cover the bait coolers that occupy space near Mayo’s office. Liberty took the idea to Carter to see if the town would support a contest to generate student designs to cover the coolers. With assurance of town support for a contest, Liberty See MURAL page 7...

Wiggly Bridge Scheduled for a Facelift
By Carin Lee, Staff Reporter YORK York's Wiggly Bridge is perhaps the smallest suspension bridge in America. A mere 75 feet long, its 10-foot towers hang cables that hold a steel frame and wooden walking slats. How did it get its name? The legend is that in the 1940's, girl scouts gave the bridge its nickname because the bridge actually does wiggle. As you walk across the bridge it moves beneath you, and if you jump up and down on it, it can really
give you a wiggly ride. This local landmark, which connects Lilac Lane to Steedman Woods, a forested peninsula and nature preserve, is in need of repair. One and one-half years ago an engineering firm that specializes in building bridges identified maintenance needed on the steel frame. Because it bridges two bodies of salt water it is in a corrosive environment. “We're fighting corrosion all the time, said Public Works Director of York, Dean Lessard. “So the frame needs to be

built out of steel. A steel manufacturer made the frame according to Lessard's plan, with its sections to be bolted together. “Next week the steel will be galvanized and the frame will be ready to be bolted together and hung, good for about another 35 years, said Lessard. The bridge was originally built in 1936, by North Berwick's Hussey Seating Company. The bridge crosses a sluiceway between Barrell's Mill Pond and the York River. More than two previous centuries colonists made a dike on the York River to create Barrell Mill Pond. They added a dam and built a saw mill and a grist mill powered by tidal water on both incoming and outgoing tides. The mills are gone now, replaced by Steedman Woods Reserve; the dike replaced by a causeway. In place of the dam
there is the sluiceway and the bridge. There is steady pedestrian traffic crossing the bridge. People now use it to access the hiking trails on Steedman Woods, which was given to the people of York to keep it “forever wild. Old York Museums now owns Steedman Woods. You'll see many hikers, accompanied by their dogs, perhaps toting cameras to record the beauty of the woods and the view from the bridge across the York River and perhaps little children who delight in jumping on the bridge to make it wiggle. The town of York owns maintenance of the causeway and bridge. When the galvanized steel arrives the bridge will be closed during the day so that the Public Works people can do their refurbishing work. Staging will be hooked off the cables so that a hanging work
area will get workers under the bridge. The bridge will be open evenings and on weekends. It's worth the trip to see this unique, tiny suspension bridge and to experience the wiggle beneath you as you walk across it.

“Mill Girls Present the Experiences of Textile Mill Workers in the 19th & 20th Centuries SOUTH BERWICK The Biddeford Mills Museum will be visiting the South Berwick Public Library to present a program called “The Mill Girls, which intertwines historical fact with real life experience. The presentation is on Wednesday, September 20 at 7 p.m., and is cosponsored by the Old Berwick Historical Society. “The Mill Girls lecture will be given by former textile mill workers. The lecture will start with a brief historical background covering the industrial revolution, and Frances Cabot Lowell and the Lowell Mills circa 1825. The presentation will discuss the establishment of the Biddeford Mills by Samuel Bachelder from the Lowell Mills, the first mill operatives, the New England farm girls, the boarding houses that were required to housed and protect these young ladies, the reasons the girls left the farms for the Mills, the work conditions, and life in the big city. South Berwick’s mill girls have a history comparable to Biddeford’s. In 1831 a group of Portsmouth investors created the Portsmouth Manufacturing Company. The water-powered cotton textile complex, stretch-
ing from the Route 4 bridge to include much of what is now Counting House Park, operated until 1896. The Portsmouth Manufacturing Company’s four-story brick cotton mill had 7,000 spindles and produced 2 million yards of cotton sheeting. Thirteen hundred bales of southern plantation cotton were brought up river each year for processing at the mills. In the early 20th century, the mill complex was razed, except the Counting House, which now serves as the home of
the Old Berwick Historical Society. To get an idea of what the textile mill industry was like, the Biddeford Mill Museum gives tours around the vast Biddeford mill complex. The tours last for between a one-and-half to two hours, and features a walk around the mill campus highlighting the various operations that manufactured a textile product. The highlight of the tour for every one is the Mill lagoons or canals which carried the water to power the giant water wheels in the sub-levels

father, also named William, was a former brewer from Massachusetts who pursued a career at sea, and his grandfather was the famed local shipbuilder Robert Cutts. He is the only native Mainer to sign the Declaration of Independence. Like many of his fellow Founding Fathers, Whipple grappled with the issue of slavery – at one time he even owned a slave ship. Kerr will share a story of the general’s evolving views on the matter, as demonstrated thru his relationship with his slave Prince Whipple. Whipple was riding the circuit on horseback as a justice of New Hampshire’s Superior Court when he died of heart failure in 1785. He is buried in Portsmouth’s North Cemetery. Kerr is heading the ongoing installation of historical markers throughout Kittery, Maine’s oldest town, including the most recent – a panel about the general located on Whipple Road, just down the street from where Whipple was born and raised. The general’s portrait also now hangs in Kittery’s Town Hall, alongside a copy of the Declaration which he signed. The September 21 event starts at 6 p.m. There is a $10 course fee, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Kittery Historical & Naval Museum. cluded some of the best-educated and most brilliant minds of the age. Whipple, however, tended to be a man of action. A former cabin boy, he made his fortune as a Kittery sea captain before settling down across the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He became a successful merchant, served as one of New Hampshire’s representatives in Congress from 1776 to 1779, and was appointed brigadier general of the state’s militia. He saw action at the pivotal Battle of Saratoga, where he helped negotiate the surrender terms of British Gen. John Burgoyne. He then escorted the defeated commander back to the Boston area, where Burgoyne was shipped back to England. “War with all its horrors is preferable to an inglorious peace, Whipple once wrote to fellow Signer Josiah Bartlett. Born in Kittery in 1730, Whipple grew up in the house still standing at 88 Whipple Road. His

According to Sydnie Sayward, she and the other students often received encouraging comments from fishermen, workers on the dock plus visitors as they painted away on the murals. “Oh this is such a nice touch to the harbor, was a comment Sayward recalled hearing from one.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ...TOUR from page 9 newed and additional time became available for some volunteers. Visits to sites, measurements of the cemetery perimeters, conditions of the stones, family names and the GPS coordinates were noted for nearly 1/3 of the two hundred cemetery locations in Wells. In 2013-2014 the Town of Wells embarked on a Cemetery maintenance program in an effort to locate, cleanup, photograph and locate the cemeteries in Town. The Town Code Enforcement Office has an on-going program in place to actively receive information from property owners, abutters and citizens on cemeteries throughout Town. Memorials to the dead offer many clues to the living. Modern stones bear only brief inscriptions. In an earlier time, the stone cutter incised lengthy epitaphs and sometimes incorporated several versus exhorting the reader to reflect on the brevity of life and the inevitability of death. Looking at a gravestone is like reading someone’s diary. Often one can determine the deceased social status, wealth, education, and even family background. This boon to genealogists also provides everyone with a sense of time. As the growth of the Town of Wells continues, the need to have these cemetery locations known is ever important. The Cemetery Ordinance of Wells and State mandates compel us to protect these valuable links to our past. Hardy also serves as a director on the Board of the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit. He says, ““Having utilized the Historical Society's resources in my research and writing, I felt it was time to give something back, and contribute to the Society's goal of helping townspeople appreciate and understand the rich history of the Town. KITTERY Tour guide/narrator David Ramsay will tell the story of the sinking, rescue and recovery of the USS Squalus submarine (SS 192), the most famous submarine rescue in US Naval history, at the STAR Theatre at the Kittery Community Center at 7 p.m., September 20. On the morning of May 23, 1939, as the submarine began its 19th test dive, unknown to the captain and crew, the main air induction valve failed to close,
causing the flooding of the aft torpedo room, both engine rooms and the crew’s quarters, drowning 26 crew members immediately. Despite the captain’s best efforts to bring the sub to the surface, the submarine sank to the ocean floor nine miles off the New Hampshire Coast. Quick action by the crew prevented the other compartments from flooding. For the remaining 33 crew who were trapped, it would mark a 39-hour ordeal they would live

to tell about for the rest of their lives. The Navy mounted a massive rescue effort. No submarine rescue had ever succeeded beyond 20 feet – the Squalus was down 243 feet. Divers from the rescue ship Falcon, brought up from Groton, Connecticut with the experimental McCann rescue chamber performed rescue operations under the directions of Charles B. (Swede) Momsen, the inventor of the chamber and brought up all 33 survivors. Working under dangerous conditions the Navy divers eventually brought the submarine up and towed it back to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard three months after the rescue was accomplished. Ramsay works during the summer in Portsmouth, NH on the motor vessel Thomas Laighton, as a tour guide, narrating local history, people and places for Portsmouth Harbor and the Isle of Shoals. In addition, he works as a guide for Historic New England at the Sarah Orne Jewett House in South Berwick. During the off season, Ramsay makes local history presentations at retirement communities and libraries, bringing history to life with wit and humor, telling about events and people from early American, Colonial up to recent times. In particular, he often tells about the littleknown events and people that brought wealth, honor, literary fame and recognition to the Piscataqua region and Maine. This lecture is free and open to the public. Pre-register for this event by calling 207-439-3800 or online at www.kitterycommunitycenter.org/star-theatre. Wells Reserve Seeking Docents WELLS Back to school means the Wells Reserve at Laudholm will soon be hosting field trips for local school groups, so the reserve is welcoming new volunteer docents to help lead tours. No experience or special expertise is necessary to get started as a docent, because professional educators provide full training. Plus, new volunteers get to “job shadow” veteran leaders until they are confident enough to lead groups on their own. “We depend on enthusiastic volunteers to keep our school programs going strong year after year,” said Caryn Beiter, the re-
serve’s interpretive education associate, adding “Our docents reach hundreds of school kids annually through a series of timetested, hands-on programs.” School groups typically spend 2 or 3 hours exploring the habitats of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, stopping along trails to cover certain topics in depth. Some groups visit the salt marsh and the reserve’s dedicated teaching laboratory as they learn about estuaries, the places where rivers meet the sea. To learn more, visit wellsreserve.org and call Caryn at 207646-1555 ext 110.
Grabin to Discuss Family Roots and Genealogy KENNEBUNK Singing historian Monica Grabin will present “Facing the Facts of My Family Tree: History Not Really for Singing,” at the Brick Store Museum’s Third Thursday Talk on Thursday, September 21 at 7 p.m. in the Museum’s Program Center. Audience participation in the discussion is encouraged and welcomed. While most of us find genealogy fascinating, not everything in family stories is noble and uplifting. Monica Grabin, who was born in New York, has lived in New England for 45 years and in Kennebunk for 32. Her family, however, is not from the Northeast, and has roots stretching through some of the most iconic events in American history. The research she and her husband, Bill, have done into her origins
has uncovered numerous stories which are part of a bitter legacy. This talk will take a look at history that many of us would rather not discuss, but which we must face squarely, via a very personal journey on her family tree. Third Thursday Talks are free to Museum Members, and $5 per person for general admission at the door. Following Monica Grabin, the final 2017 Third Thursday Talk will feature guest speakers from the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor to speak on Indigenous First Nations history and de-colonizing our nation’s museums on Thursday, October 19. The Third Thursday Talks are generously supported by the Maine Humanities Council. The Brick Store Museum is located at 117 Main Street in
Kennebunk’s historic district. For more information: www. brickstoremuseum.org; 207985-4802.

“Rebel Without A Clue – A WayOff Broadway Memoir Presented KENNEBUNK “If you don’t have a dream, how you gonna make a dream come true. These lyrics from a song in the musical South Pacific helped inspire writer/artist Steve Hrehovcik to follow his dream of a career in the theater. He describes the adventurous journey he traveled in his book “Rebel Without A Clue – A Way-Off Broadway Memoir. Hrehovcik makes a presentation about his book at The Center in Kennebunk on Thursday, September 21 at 1 p.m. Combining a serious outlook with comic overtones, Hrehovcik’s memoir dramatizes how his search often led to surprising new discoveries. Never giving up, his story reveals how he managed to achieve a few surprising triumphs along the way – most important, a marriage of 51 years, three remarkable children and a wonderful grandson. As part of his presentation, Hrehovcik shows cartoons he drew that appear at the end of each chapter to add fun to the theme of his story. In addition to his memoir, Hrehovcik has written more than 700 feature articles for newspapers, magazines and business publications. Among them are personal profiles, historical events, art exhibits, theater reviews and humorous personal accounts. He has also written movie scripts, comedy stage plays, musical reviews and a comedy televi-
sion travel show featured on the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. He also writes poetry and is working on a musical comedy. Hrehovcik will have books available for purchase and signing. The Center is located at 175 Port Road, (Route 35) Kennebunk Lower Village. For more information: 207-967-8514.

James R. Lovett, 65 BELFAST / YORK – James R. Lovett, 65, of Belfast, died peacefully Friday, August 25, 2017 at the VA Medical Center at Togus in Augusta. Born in Washington DC on July 25, 1952, he is the son of Lillian
(Bolduc) Lovett and the late James H. Lovett. Jim spent his early childhood in Maryland and many summers in Maine at his family’s camp. In 1967, his family moved to Maine. After graduation from York High School in 1971, he joined the military and actively served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. Jim and his wife Judy were married on July 13, 1996 in Rockport. In March 2017, the couple renewed their vows at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Belfast, with Fr. Robert C. Vaillancourt presiding, which marked a very special occasion for them. During his life, a source of great enjoyment involved summers at camp spending time with
family. Jim had artistic talent, enjoyed military history, New England sports, fishing, all kinds of animals and storytelling over a game of cards. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Judy Lovett of Belfast, his mother, Lillian Lovett of York, two sisters Diana Williams (and husband Russell) of Damariscotta Mills and Denise Lovett of York, a stepson Terry Patterson of Belfast and his children Carter and Chandler, a nephew Cooper Williams of Boulder, CO a niece Carlyn Williams of Cambridge, MA, several aunts, uncles and many cousins. He was predeceased by his father, James H. Lovett. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff, nurses and
doctors at EMMC and the VA Medical Center at Togus for their kind and compassionate care. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate and honor Jim’s life will be held on Monday, September 18 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Court Street, Belfast, at 11 a.m. Committal service with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made in Jim’s name to the non-profit Beals Hospitality House, 1 VA Togus Road, Bldg. 2, Augusta, ME 04420 (bealshouse.org). Simply amazing flavors. Truly a must visit. Chef Norm prepares food with his personal touch of unique ingredients that meld flavors you wouldn’t expect. He also is agreeable to customizing a dish per request. Mussels are a must. Wine list is extensive and servers are knowledgeable, offering suggestions to complement the guest’s taste. Be sure to sign up for the rewards card. Great for intimate dining. Don’t forget the great breakfast. Heck, go twice in a day if you [can]. Happy to be a local. ~ Diane in August

BUSINESS & FINANCE 4 Money Issues Couples Should Agree On Spouses often harbor different opinions on a variety of subjects. From the style of clothes and haircuts they like on each other to the TV shows they watch every evening, marriage requires
plenty of compromise. While frivolous things such as choosing between Monday Night Football and Dancing with the Stars might conjure up a minor squabble, when it comes to arguments over money, re-
spective differences can lead to more than just mild disagreements. “Income and spending are at the heart of any partnership – family as well as business,” says Al Jacobs, an entrepreneur, real

estate investor and author of the book Roadway to Prosperity. “Just as business partners need to be on the same page when it comes to spending company money, spouses need to come together to avoid creating a crisis situation that could ruin a marriage.” Jacobs says there are four basic issues that would put families in better financial shape if both spouses could be in accord on them: • Life insurance. Every family provider should arrange financially for his or her survivors in the event of an untimely death. A common way to ac-
complish this is with life insurance. This is where controversy arises. You want an inexpensive and unadorned 20- or 30-year level benefit term policy, of sufficient face value (normally no less than 10 times the insured’s annual income). Spouses must agree on a policy and not waiver once it is purchased. • Credit cards. No single implement has led to greater misery for more families than the credit card, Jacobs says. These should be used as merely a convenience when cash is not See AGREE page 23...

...AGREE from page 22 available, and account balances should be paid in full each month before any interest is charged. Both spouses must conduct their lives by this rule. If either cannot do so, Jacobs recommends destroying the credit cards. • Transportation. The car constitutes the typical American’s single most important fixation. No other product is more forcefully marketed, and far too many people succumb to its allure, Jacobs says, forfeiting a substantial portion of disposable income. He says no one should drive a leased or financed vehicle. Instead, Jacobs recommends paying cash, even if that means you drive a 1984 Toyota Corolla. • Education. The educa-
tional establishment has convinced the nation that a university must appear prestigious and be costly for it to be worthwhile, Jacobs says. The result: Untold numbers of college graduates and their parents are in hock big time, some never to emerge from debt. Jacobs suggests that unless a student is able to earn a scholarship, freshman and sophomore years should be spent at a community college, commuting from home, and the junior and senior years at a reasonably priced local state university. “The social and psychological pressures brought to bear on customers are more than many people can resist, says Jacobs. “But if two people hope to prosper together, both spouses must avoid the impulse to make purchases unwisely.

Senator Susan Collins Speaks at YCCC Breakfast
WELLS U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered the keynote address and took questions from members of the community on a wide variety of issues on the morning of September 8 at York County Community College’s (YCCC) Eggs & Issues Breakfast. The event, which was attended by more than 140 people, was held at the college’s main campus in Wells. Senator Collins began her remarks by commending YCCC on its commitment to career-focused education, which prepares students to face the challenges of the global economy. She noted that YCCC has been a leader in cultivating partnerships with local employers, which benefits businesses as well as Mainers
seeking to find employment or develop their skills. “YCCC’s wide range of programs and their success in helping students achieve their goals are the result of the partnership forged between this school and area employers, said Senator Collins. “An outstanding example of that partnership was seen this May, when 14 Pratt & Whitney employees completed the Apprenticeship Program and
graduated from YCCC. As Pratt & Whitney expands its North Berwick production, this collaboration is critical in helping to develop the skilled workforce this valued Maine employer needs to advance the aviation industry and to enhance our national security, while providing great jobs right here in our State. Senator Collins has worked to foster these types of constructive partnerships and enhance
our nation’s ability to train and educate workers. Earlier this year, she introduced the American Apprenticeship Act with Senator Amy Klobuchar (DMN), which would provide funding to states for tuition assistance programs for pre-apprenticeship and Registered Apprenticeship programs. Senator Collins also championed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which improved federal job training programs and encouraged collaboration between businesses, educational institutions, and workforce boards to help address the gap between the needs of employers and the skills of potential employees. “From accounting to veterinary technology, with culinary arts, digital media, precision machining and so much more in between, YCCC’s diploma and
certificate programs advance economic growth and workforce development, remarked Senator Collins. “The people of Maine are proud of our community college system, and the reason is clear: students of all ages and backgrounds are finding affordable tuition and the skills they need to succeed. YCCC hosts the Eggs & Issues forum as part of its mission to help provide information and education about issues affecting York County and the State of Maine. Established in 1994, YCCC is one of seven community colleges in the Maine Community College System. The college annually enrolls nearly 3,000 students in certificate and associate degree programs, continuing education, career & professional development, and business training.
~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, I now have Windows 10 and am still getting used to it. My major complaint at the moment is: How do I archive emails? I have received many that I want to keep, but I cannot figure out how to do this. I cannot simply move the email to the Archive folder. Doesn’t work. Help, please! Cecile Dear Cecile, Unfortunately, the mail app that comes with Windows 10 does not allow you to create folders for storing your mail. You would need to upgrade to
an email program with more features. You could purchase Outlook that comes with Microsoft Office to get this feature, or, my favorite replacement for the Windows 10 mail app is Mozilla Thunderbird. You can download and install Thunderbird, free of charge at: www. mozilla. org/en-US/thunderbird/. Once you have downloaded and installed Thunderbird, all you need is your email address and password to get your email set up and ready to go. If that is something that you are not comfortable doing, bring it into a

local computer shop like mine, and I would be happy to set it up for you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been reading your helpful hints for many years and appreciate your answers. On Facebook the box on the right hand side that is always there with the listing of those ready to chat is annoying. Is there a way to remove the chat list of names? I tried several things and nothing works. Thank you in advance, Sue Dear Sue, I’m guessing you are referring to the chat sidebar. That is fairly simple to remove (actually, you are only hiding it) if you just know where to look. In the lower right corner of the page there is a search box with a small gear next to it. Click on that gear. In the list of options that appear you can select a couple that will remove those annoying names. Clicking on “Hide Sidebar will remove the entire right column. This is probably the option you are looking for. If you click “Turn off Chat it will “grey out the list of people you could chat with, but it will still be there. Clicking “Show Ticker will display recent activity by your facebook friends on top, with the list of friends ready to chat. You can put your mouse in the section
between the two lists and drag it down. That way you can still see the ticker, but not the chat list. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is it safe to use Facebook Messenger to transfer money to a friend or family? I once used a debit card to purchase something on Facebook - not Messenger - and shortly thereafter had my number stolen by someone in Great Britain who made a lot of purchases on it but I was refunded by Visa. Thanks for your reply. Larry Dear Larry, Wow, I didn’t even know that Facebook messenger had a function in it for sending money. That is something that I find both interesting and frightening. Is it safe? Facebook would like you to think so, but in this age of hacking, I would not want to give Facebook my debit card information. I think PayPal is a better way to transfer money. First, they don’t require a debit card, you can use a credit card which has more protection, and second, they have been in the business of securely transferring money for a long time. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there any way to set up an Icon for Control Panel on Windows 10? Thanks, Nita

Dear Nita, There are several ways you can quickly open the Control Panel in Windows 10, and there is a way to create an icon for it on your desktop, taskbar and start menu. First, to quickly access the control Panel in Windows 10, you can just right-click on the start button and find “Control Panel listed in the context menu that appears. Once you have opened the Control Panel, you can right click on the taskbar icon and click, “Pin This Program To Taskbar in the context menu. This will give you 1-click access to your control panel right from the taskbar. Another way to quickly access the Control Panel in Windows 10 is with a keyboard shortcut. Press the windows logo key and the letter X at the same time, and you will get the same context menu that you saw when you right-clicked on the start button. If you want to add the Control Panel to your start menu, you will need to search for it first. Click on the start button, then type “Control Panel. Once you start typing, the search box will appear. When a link to the Control Panel appears in the menu, right-click on it, and click on “Pin To Start to place a link in your start menu. Once you have the link in your start menu (you might have to scroll down to the bottom of the menu for newly placed links) you can drag the icon from the start menu to your desktop to place an icon on your desktop. Hopefully this will help you set up your computer so that you can quickly access the Control Panel. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Health & Fitness Maine Dental Association: Remember Oral Health at Back-to-School Time The Maine Dental Association is reminding students and parents that during this busy back-to-school time of year, it is important to keep oral health in mind. Dental decay is the most chronic disease among children ages 6 to 19, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. The National Institutes of Health estimate 42 percent of children 2 to 11 have some dental decay, and 59 per-
cent of children 12 to 19 have some dental decay. Going back to school is a great time to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes like brushing regularly into your children’s daily routine, according to MDA Executive Board President Dr. Gary Creisher. “The good thing about getting back to school is that the children get back in a routine, Creisher said. “Allowing enough time for brushing prior to school is an important start to every day, and scheduled bedtimes for the school year are important for needed sleep, as they make bedtime brushing easier for parents to oversee. The American Dental Association suggests that your child's back-to-school checklist should include: Regular dental examinations to diagnose dental issues, and to treat or prevent them from happening. A dentist may suggest fluoride treatments or sealants to prevent decay and can diagnose and treat dental problems.
Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing. The ADA recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes, and flossing once a day. Eating healthy lunches and snacks. If a child eats in the school cafeteria, review healthy, balanced food choices. Cut back on sugary foods and soft drinks. Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard while participating in organized sports, physical education classes or playground activities. Incorporated in 1867, the Maine Dental Association is a professional membership organization of licensed dentists. The Maine Dental Association exists to improve and maintain the oral and overall health of the people of Maine, serve the dentists of Maine, collectively and individually, and represent the American Dental Association at the state level. ing and inspiring day that shows support for those living with Alzheimer’s and gives a strong message of hope to find answers about this disease and ultimately a cure. In addition to the scenic 3.5 mile walk, participants will enjoy the emcee and DJ talent of Haley Smith Rose from HOT 104.7 FM.
Dogs on leashes are welcome and the walk route accommodates strollers and wheelchairs. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally,
more than 15 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the U.S. In Maine alone, there are more than 27,000
people living with the disease and 69,000 caregivers. Sign up as a Team Captain, join a team, or walk as an individual at alz.org/walk.

earned his first win on June 16, 2006 at Atlanta, allowing one earned run in 6.0 innings in the Red Sox' 4-1 victory. Lester's 1,386 strikeouts with Boston are the most in club history by a left-hander and fourth-most overall on the franchise list. He earned 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013 Red Sox Pitcher of the Year honors from the Boston Chapter of the BBWAA. In 2007, he won the Tony Conigliaro Award for overcoming adversity. In May 19, 2008 against the Royals, he became the 18th pitcher in Red Sox history to throw a no-hitter.
New Sports Craze Takes Hold of our Region YORK COUNTY If you have driven past the Kennebunk Waterhouse Pavilion in the early evening and wondered about the odd game that folks were playing-it is Picklelball. Our locals have been inflicted with the sports contagion of this game with the funny name and they are at it in Kennebunk four evenings a week, Tuesday through Friday at 5 p.m. and in the mornings at 9 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. The Waterhouse Pavilion hosts three Pickleball Courts on the winter ice rink and it is a very pleasant place to play. Pickle paddles and balls are provided for the newcomer and first timers who wish to try their hand in the action. All players pay a nightly fee of $2 per evening. Brian Richardson is the Major Domo of Kennebunk Pickle and he can be reached for more information at rbrian2851@yahoo.com. Pickleball has also taken root in Wells at the Wells Recreation Center on Branch road and their playtime is 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Fee is $3 per evening. When the warm weather is swept away in the middle of October, the Kittery Community Center will be offering Pickleball indoors three days a week. A four-time All-Star and three-time World Series Champion, Lester is in his third season with Chicago after he signed with the Cubs on December 15, 2014. He was the MVP of the 2016 NLCS leading the Cubs to the World Series. To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, players must have debuted with the Sea Dogs at least ten years ago and have had success in Portland and beyond. Each inductee is presented a plaque for their accomplishment. In addition, plaques of the Hall of Fame members are displayed in the Hadlock Field concourse.
Mondays 3-5 p.m., Wednesdays 5-6:45 p.m., and Friday mornings 9-11. a.m. Fee is $3 per day. The good news for Picklers is that Camp Birch Hill will be hosting an Open Pickleball Tournament and Recreation Weekend as the summer wanes, Saturday and Sunday, September 23 and 24. The Pickleball phenomena has seen explosive growth in the Northeast with enthusiastic participants taking over tennis courts, YMCA gyms, and community centers. Its appeal began with the senior set, but the fun of this combination of ping-pong, tennis and badminton has begun to infect the up and coming generations and proved to be the most popular racquet sport at summer camp. The kick-off for the Birch Hill event begins on Friday night September 22 with a welcome lakeside Bar-B-Que on the Birch Hill Beachfront. Saturday

While the Veterans’ Services Office location has changed, services will not be interrupted. saster relief, but we've never seen devastation on this scale. The Salvation Army is on the ground with their donations, resources and volunteers providing rescue efforts to individuals and their families. They are providing food, water and shelter for victims, lending a hand with cleanup and putting people in touch with their loved ones. The Salvation Army is also helping families rebuild, helping communities restore their businesses, helping with medical expenses, and providing counseling for those in need. They shared this story on their website from Hurricane Harvey victims talking to a rescue crew: “I’ve been eating beans out of a can for three days. Having a hot meal is so appreciated. Also at the same apartment complex, the rescue crew found people attempting to cook on a make-shift charcoal grill: “We have just been trying to cook enough to keep food in peoples’ bellies, a victim said. “Thank you so very much for coming out to feed us and make sure we are okay.
