“Cochranism Delineated at Berwick Academy

SOUTH BERWICK South Berwick resident Brad Fletcher, chair of the history department at Berwick Academy, will present “Cochranism Delineated!" on Thursday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the academy.

Fletcher will discuss what he termed the “short, strange, and scandalous history of the religious craze known as Cochranism that swept through southern Maine in the early 19th century. The lecture is part of the Old Berwick Historical Society’s

ongoing lecture series, and will be held at the Jeppesen Science Center at Berwick Academy, with refreshments served by volunteers. Admission is by donation. Please take Fogg Entrance #2 and use the parking lot at the top of the hill. “Cochranism Delineated," subtitled "Religious Hydrophobia," was a pamphlet written by Reverend Ephraim Stinchfield in 1819 in an attempt to check the growing popularity of a religious sect led by Jacob Cochran. In the aftermath of 1816's "Year Without a Summer," when crops suffered during very cold weather, and amid the growing tensions of rapid social change and the political push for state-

hood, Jacob Cochran arrived in northern York County, Maine, preaching a highly unorthodox theology borrowing from various churches while adding in his own radical teachings including, most infamously, the doctrine of free love or "spiritual wifery." Despite the preachings and warnings of local ministers like Stinchfield, Cochran held forth for several years and continued to grow in popularity until he was arrested, tried, and sentenced to prison for adultery and lascivious behavior. His career largely ended here, although controversy and questions remained, including the sect's role and influence in the development of Mormonism a decade later. The shock waves created by Cochran continued to roil through York County families and communities for several generations. “Beyond being a fascinating and wild story in itself, said

Fletcher, “Cochranism tells us much about society, religion, gender and politics in the earliest days of Maine's statehood. For more information visit www.oldberwick.org. ...GALA from page 1 Director-MGH Senior Health. In addition, guests will enjoy a surf & turf dinner of lobster tail and petite filet mignon, also featuring Hancock Family favorites – Lobster Risotto Balls, Mini Crab Cakes, Lobster Tartlets and Lobster Grilled Cheese. Adding to the festivities will be a raffle for a $1,000 trip to Paris, along with many silent auction surprises. If you have any questions or would like to purchase tickets to this gala event – donation $150 per ticket or $1,000 per table of eight, please contact the Friendraising Office at 207-351-2385 or info@yorkhospital.com.

Irish Music Trio FĂłdhla Kicks Off Fall Season

WEST KENNEBUNK The fall season of Concerts in West K! gets underway with a return appearance by the popular Irish music trio, FĂłdhla. Comprised of flutist Nicole Rabata, fiddler Ellery Klein and guitarist Bethany

New Art Exhibition at the Library YORK Many changes in the world have begun as drawings on napkins or on the backs of envelopes. A drawing can be an absent-minded doodle, a casual recording of a view, or an intense exploration of a subject. It can be performed on just about any surface with an astonishing variety of tools. "Seven Artists Draw" is the fall art exhibit at the York Public Library running through October. Featured are the works of seven accomplished artists

from the Seacoast area who are devoted to drawing and explore this art form in a variety of ways. Michael Tronzo and Adeline Goldminc-Tronzo both studied at the Art Students League in New York City and exhibit work across the United States and in Europe. Pat Hardy was a recipient of a National Foundation for the Arts grant, and her work can be found in many museum collections. Lincoln Perry believes in learning See DRAWINGS page 16...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Celebration of Jazz, Dancing and Poetry at OPA OGUNQUIT Ogunquit Performing Arts (OPA) is happy to present an amazing performance especially created by Sojoy and the Annex Contemporary Dance Company, as they combine their artistic talents on Friday, September 16, at 8 p.m. in the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street in Ogunquit. The exciting collaboration results in an exhilarating program of jazz and contemporary dance, entitled "Up's the Word: A Celebration in Jazz Dance, and Poetry." Jonny Peiffer leads his 7-piece band Sojoy in an evening of jazz compositions, mostly his own. Influenced by the big bands of the past, Peiffer’s music showcases modern arrangements and a variety of instrumentation. With Sojoy, his contemporary, splendid little “Big Band, Peiffer creates and performs music that inspires

joyous movement, in his players and his audience. Peiffer's music provides the perfect ride for dancers of the Annex Dance Company. The band and the company are a fantastic blend as together they explore the parameters of jazz in sound and motion – from smooth and cool to swingin' hot.

Sojoy is the creation of drummer/composer Jonny Peiffer. The hand picked band of saxes, trumpet, trombone, bass has been wowing audiences everywhere they go with their hummable melodies, warm harmonies and wildly creative solos. “Peiffer has mastered his own voice, proving that great

music still exists even as new traditions are being forged, wrote Chris Hislop of the Portsmouth Herald.

Before forming his own band, Peiffer was a popular See JAZZ page 15...

Memorable and Spirited ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ at Ogunquit Playhouse

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Reporter OGUNQUIT Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, on stage now at the Ogunquit Playhouse, is a big, old-fashioned musical that likely will make feminists in the audience cringe — especially when

the brawling brothers toss blankets over their would-be brides’ heads, throw them over their shoulders and kidnap them to their mountain-top home. But it’s appealing and likeable, nonetheless, thanks to its energetic, high-kicking dancing,

memorable tunes, historical plot and happily-ever-after ending. The show is based on the classic 1954 film musical that was adapted from “The Sobbin Women, a short story by Stephen Vincent Benet, who had based his tale on The Rape (Abduction) of the Sabine Women, a legend from ancient Roman history. Seven Brides takes place in 1850s Oregon, a Western frontier where a man needs a good woman to cook, clean, wash his clothes and provide him with the affectionate companionship that, hopefully, will produce a big, happy family. And that’s what the brawny, handsome Adam Pontipee, wonderfully played by Nathaniel Hackmann, seeks when he comes to town from his backwoods retreat, determined to nab a wife to run the household for himself — and his six equally brawny, handsome

But soon enough, she learns the truth about that passel of guys back home — Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Ephraim, Frank and Gideon, ably played — and danced — by Kevin Munhall, Colin Bradbury, Brian Martin, Abe Hegewald, Jeff Smith and Justin Schuman — and lets Adam know, vehemently, that he’s betrayed her. Nevertheless, strong-willed Milly, to every feminist’s delight, soon rules the roost, as she comically whips those boisterous boys into shape, teaching them to dance and how to handle women, gently. Soon, they set off to meet their hoped-for mates at the monthly social, an event that turns into a testosteronefueled standoff between the big, burly brothers and the suitors, their smaller counterparts who live in town. "I’ve performed in almost every venue in the seacoast, from the Buoy Gallery and the Dance Hall in Kittery to the historic Portsmouth Music Hall, in the Boston area at the Regent and the Coolidge Corner Theater, in NYC at Dance Theater Workshop, and many other venues in between." Peiffer put together his own band in 2014 to showcase his own music, and the resulting successful ensemble is testament to his multiple talents. Kittery’s Annex Contemporary Dance Company joins Sojoy for performances of modern dance intermingled throughout the evening. Director Julie Hebb reflects the jazz influence in her choreography for her seven dancers. often spend more than they need. “It’s called retail therapy for a reason, said Mike Sullivan, a personal finance consultant for Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “An occasional extravagance is typically fine, but constant overspending is a huge problem for millions of Americans with massive credit card debt. Simply understanding your overspending triggers will help you combat them. Sullivan summarizes five common triggers and how to beat them: “I’m feeling down. People often overspend when they’re feeling down, bored or lonely, as shopping can dull negative feelings. To combat emotional spending, consider reaching out to a friend, opening a good book or exercising. These activities also release endorphins – and don’t cost a dime. “I’m on vacation. Rules

don’t seem to apply when you’re on vacation, making it easy to spend money on things you wouldn’t normally buy. Set spending limits for vacations. Also, stock your hotel with snacks and drinks to cut dining costs. “I have to buy a gift. Whether shopping for birthdays, showers or the holidays, it’s easy to spend more than you planned. Waiting until the last minute is a sure-fire trigger for overspending. Plan ahead by buying and stashing gifts throughout the year when items go on sale, or contribute to group gifts for weddings and other big occasions. “It’s free money. It’s tempting to reward yourself when you earn a bonus, get birthday cash or a tax refund, but once it’s gone, it’s gone. Make this so-called free money work for you. Allow yourself one small splurge, then use the rest of the money to shore up your emergency fund or pay down debts. “It’s a great deal. As any

Black Friday shopper knows, it’s tempting to get sucked into oneday deals. Today, overspending is easier than ever with mobile retail and social media purchasing. But, no matter how great the deal, you’re not saving a penny if you don’t need the item. To resist the temptation, unsubscribe from retailers’ email lists, delete shopping apps and avoid bore-

dom browsing. Take Charge America, Inc. is a nonprofit agency offering financial education and counseling services including credit counseling, debt management, student loan counseling, housing counseling and bankruptcy counseling. www.takechargeamerica. org; 888-822-9193.

When he needed financing he came to us. After buying the first store in Hampton, he opened a second store in Laconia. Paul is proud that his new passion supports the local community. ELIOT Marshwood High School graduate, Madeline Pentecost, received the $500 Eliot Democratic Committee Scholarship award. She will attend the University of New Hampshire this Fall and is shown here with EDC officers, Jessica O’Donoghue, Kim and John Reed. This award was recently renamed the Betsy O’Donoghue Memorial Scholarship Fund in

honor and memory of the late, longtime Eliot Democratic leader. O’Donoghue served Eliot in many leadership rolls including Chair of the Board of Selectman. In giving the scholarship recipient her gift, the officers of the EDC reminded Pentecost that the namesake of her Scholarship was the local leader who famously declared: “Government is run by those who show up!

George Burk was a professor of Fine Arts at the University of Southern Maine while Martha Miller, whose central method of expression is the self-portrait, teaches at the Maine College of Art. The seventh artist, Lou Kohl-Morgan, who traces part of her Native American lineage to the Choctaw Tribe, describes drawing as "magical" and says she is "intrigued by the tran-

sient moment." The drawings will be on display at the library from Sept. 15 through Oct. 31. A reception for the artists will be held on Tuesday, September 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. Several of the artists will participate in a group discussion. ...SEVEN from page 14 same. So Adam, determined to marry his brothers off, directs them to follow the centuriesold Roman lead and kidnap the girls. One thing leads to another and Milly, furious at Adam and the boys, segregates herself and the ladies from the lusty gents. Alas, after one long, cold winter, spring arrives, a new baby, too, and all, of course, are married off with that promise of living happily ever-after. Broadway veteran BT McNicholl, who directed previous dance-extravaganzas Billy Elliot the Musical and West Side Story at Ogunquit, directs Seven Brides. His mark shows in this dance-fueled production that is choreographed by the talented Parker Esse. The “Challenge Dance, a highspirited dance-off between the brothers, the suitors and the brides highlights the first act

and showcases the athleticism of this talented troupe, several of whom trained as gymnasts. And in Act II, “Spring Dance again displays their talents. Among the stand-out musical numbers is “Love Never Goes Away and “Bless Your Beautiful Hide sung by Hackmann in a deep, rich baritone. Leaming, resembling a young Julie Andrews, shines with “Glad That You Were Born and “Wonderful, Wonderful Day. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a joyous way to spend a few early fall hours at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Even the most diehard feminist would agree to that, especially when love, after all, wins out in the end. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers continues through Oct. 1 at Ogunquit Playhouse. Health & Fitness “Big Andrew Donates $15,000 to Living Well with Cancer YORK “The Big Andrew Foundation has worked on these events for nine years, said event organizer Ian Knowles, “and being able to write a check for $15,000 to help people in the community makes it so much more impactful. It is an amazing thing to take away some of the worries — like putting food on the table or paying rent — that come with a cancer diagnosis. Having these funds allows those who are dealing with life and death issues to focus on wellness and their own wellbeing. York Hospital Oncologist Dr. Marilyn McLaughlin agreed saying that, “While

the treatment we are giving patients can be challenging, the Big Andrew Foundation picks them up and helps them through the difficult times. The 9th Annual Big Andrew Surf Contest took place on August 14 at Long Sands Beach in York, the premier East Coast surf contest organized by the Big Andrew Foundation for the love of surfing and the desire to help cancer patients in need. The 3rd Annual Car Classic took place the day before, at the Short sands Ball Field, to kick off the weekend’s fundraising efforts in classic style by showcasing the finest pre-1970’s classics, from muscle cars to custom rides. “This incredible donation

will help so many people in many different ways who are undergoing treatment for cancer in our community, said Oncology Social Worker Susan Kelly-Westman. “I thank all of the organizers of the Surf Contest and Car

Classic, and contributors to The Big Andrew Foundation from the bottom of my heart for all that you do to help our patients. Ian, Justin and Paul are truly everyday heroes! The Big Andrew Foundation was established in 2008 following the passing of 15-year-old Andrew Gmelch from Maine

who lost his two-year battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Andrew was an avid surfer, skateboarder and snowboarder whose too-short life provided an extraordinary example to his family and friends of how living with passion means to live without regrets and fears. See DONATE page 25...

Of that funding, $375,000 will be allocated for three new grant awards while the remaining funding will be allocated to seven projects in the state that have previously received funding from ONDCP. “The opioid epidemic is taking an unimaginable toll on

families across Maine, which is why investing in community coalitions is so important, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King said in a joint statement. “These coalitions are determined to support our young people and turn the tide against this epidemic, and we will continue to work to combat the drug crisis and help ensure that future generations of Mainers can live happy and healthy lives. The funding comes through ONDCP’s Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program. The program provides a matching federal grant where each community provides a minimum of a one-toone match in local funding for each federal dollar awarded. According to the ONDCP, a DFC National Evaluation Report conducted in 2014 concluded that among middle and high school students across the nation, DFC-funded community coalitions consistently have lower rates of past 30-day youth substance use. The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, created by the DrugFree Communities Act of 1997, is the Nation’s leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent youth substance use. Health & Fitness Casino Self-Exclusion Services Available Locally YORK Choose To Be Healthy Coalition at York Hospital, along with several state agencies and Maine casinos, are working to help people who have a gambling problem sign up for self-exclusion. A person can self-exclude by signing an

agreement to not enter a casino for a period of 1 to 5 years or a lifetime. Staff at Choose To Be Healthy, located at 18 Williams Avenue in York, are there to help anyone who wishes to sign up for this program. Most people gamble responsibly, but some can become

addicted to gambling and that can cause major problems with work, family, and finances. Self-exclusion is an opportunity for people whose casino gambling has become a problem, to regain control by limiting access to Maine casinos. Before the program sites were open, the only place a person could sign up for self-exclusion was at a Maine casino. Additional sites make it easier for people to sign up without entering the place they are

trying to avoid. If you think you may have a gambling problem, please dial 2-1-1 or visit www.211maine.org. For more information on Maine’s self-exclusion program, including the locations to self-exclude, visit www.maine. gov/selfexclusion. If you would like to discuss self-exclusion and consider completing paperwork, contact Michelle Mason at mmason@ yorkhospital.com.

WELLS Want to help save the lives of 25 cats and kittens in peril right here in Maine? Over two dozen cats and kittens are at risk in northern Maine communities without a No-Kill shelter or supporting community where they can be placed safely. Euthanasia and illness threaten their lives. Their situation is desperate. Some are newborn, others are only weeks old. All are in grave danger peril. We are recruiting local folks to step up and help. How? By fostering, helping clean and care for the cats at the adoption center, by donating supplies and money for vet bills, by delivering supplies to foster teams as needed. The most urgent need now is for foster homes. If you have

cat experience – better yet, if you have experience giving medication, or can drive cats to the vet in Arundel, we need you. We also need additional volunteers at the shelter. We’re really short-handed now because many of our summer volunteers have gone back home. Even if you can only spare a couple of hours a week, you can still make a difference. Please call. If you can’t spare your time, maybe you can donate. Gasoline cards will help fuel the mission north. Donations to purchase additional equipment, pay vet bills, purchase supplies for foster families, all will be a blessing. You can also help us by purchasing a blue Karma recyclable bag at the Wells Hannaford during the month of September. For the next two weeks, for each

purchase of a Bag for a Cause, available at checkout lanes and in the lobby, Hannaford will donate a dollar to Safe Haven. We appreciate Wells Hannaford for their support. Every dollar saves precious lives. Please tell your friends! We’re also excited that on Sept. 19, the cast of the Ogunquit Playhouse’s production of “Seven Brides for Seven Broth-

ers will perform a benefit performance show at Maine Street, Rt. 1, Ogunquit. 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit Safe Haven Humane Society.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady Your newsletters are terrific. Thank you! I just purchased a 2 in 1 laptop that has Windows 10 as the operating system. My issue is how do I open & edit my Word documents I've saved onto a USB drive from my older computer? They were all saved using Microsoft Word 2013 version. Do I need to purchase Word (Office) again and download to my new computer in order to open, edit & re-save these documents on my USB Drive ? I only use Word in the Office set of programs (not Excel, not Powerpoint, etc.). Thanks, Chris Dear Chris, You will need Word (or another program that can read and edit Word Files) installed on your new laptop, however, you don't absolutely have to purchase a new copy for the

new computer. If you purchased Office 2013 on a disk, you should be able to install it from the disk on your new laptop. If your laptop doesn't have an optical drive, you can either use a usb optical drive, or copy the contents of the disk onto a USB data stick (on another computer that has an optical drive) and install Office from the data stick. If you purchased Office in the form of a small card with the product key on it, you would have used your Microsoft account to download and install Office. You can always go and download it again at: https:// setup.office.com/ Just sign into your Microsoft account, and all the office products you have purchased will be listed. If the first two options don't work for you, you can purchase Office, or just Word again. Just make sure that you register it

with your Microsoft account, and that you save your account information so that you can re-download it in the future. Another option would be to use free, open source office software. My favorite is LibreOffice at: https://www.libreoffice.org/. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I belong to a quilting group and need to send all 12 girls updates and messages. I'm having trouble grouping the contacts together under a quilting group. It takes so much time to send each one individually. I use a mini iPad and use my gmail account. I have googled some instructions but for some reason this old brain can't follow those directions. Would you have clearer directions for me to follow. Thanks, Barb Dear Barb, Creating a group in Gmail is a lot easier than sending 12 emails one at a time. Lets see how we can do this. First, it is easier to do on your computer if you have access to one, but it can be done on your iPad as well. 1. To start, open your web browser on either your computer or iPad and go to www. google.com/contacts. This will display your Google Contacts with a list in the main section of the window, and navigation links in the left column. 2. Click on "Groups" in the

left column. 3. Click on "New Group" in the left column. 4. Type a name for your group in the box provided, then click the "Create Group" button. You will now have an empty group with no members. 5. Now, go back to your list of contacts (Click "All Contacts" in the left column) and click or tap on the name of the contact that you want to add to your group. 6. When the contact's details are displayed in a smaller pop-up window, you will see "Add to groups" in the lower-left corner of the window. Click (or tap) on "Add to groups". 7. Click (or tap) on the name of the group you want to add your contact to, then click (or tap) on a blank spot in the box and your contact should be added to the group. The next time you want to send an email to your quilting group, just type the name of your group in the "To:" section and the email will be addressed to the entire group. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there any way to set up an Icon for Control Panel on Windows 10? Thanks, Nita Dear Nita, There are several ways you can quickly open the Control Panel in Windows 10, and there is a way to create an icon for it on your desktop, taskbar and start menu. First, to quickly access the control Panel

in Windows 10, you can just right-click on the start button and find "Control Panel" listed in the context menu that appears. Once you have opened the Control Panel, you can right click on the taskbar icon and click, "Pin This Program To Taskbar" in the context menu. This will give you 1-click access to your control panel right from the taskbar. Another way to quickly access the Control Panel in Windows 10 is with a keyboard shortcut. Simply press the windows logo key and the letter X at the same time, and you will get the same context menu that you saw when you right-clicked on the start button. If you want to add the control Panel to your start menu, you will need to search for it first. Just click on the start button, then type "Control Panel". Once you start typing, the search box will appear. When a link to the Control Panel appears in the menu, right- click on it, and click on "Pin To Start" to place a link in your start menu. Once you have the link in your start menu (you might have to scroll down to the bottom of the menu for newly placed links) you can drag the icon from the start menu to your desktop to place an icon on your desktop. Hopefully this will help you set up your computer so that you can quickly access the Control Panel. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have read your e-mail for years and you have helped me a lot. I download windows 10. On 8, I could right click on a web page and get CREATE A SHORTCUT. I can't seem to do that with windows 10. How can I create a shortcut on the desktop from a web page? Thank you, Wimons Dear Wimons, When you download Windows 10, you also get Microsoft's newest browser, Edge. It has replaced Internet Explorer. In Edge, you are no longer able to right click on a web page and use "Create A Shortcut". In fact, Edge only has two or three right-click options. I have done a little bit of research, and so far, the only browsers that allows you to quickly and easily create a shortcut on your desktop are, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. In both Chrome and Firefox, you simply drag the small icon to the left of the address of a web page from the address bar to your desktop and it creates a shortcut. sity Soccer team came away with three victories and their second Jamboree Championship so far this preseason. The team also went undefeated at the Noble Jamboree on August 20, defeating Traip, Noble, and Fryeburg Academy. In the championship game the Bulldogs tied South Portland in regulation 1-1 but won in penalty kicks (3-0). Vatcher, Marshall and Zimmermann
