York Firefighters Aid in Massachusetts During Gas Fires By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer YORK It started as a routine training session last Thursday when York Fire Chief Chris Balentine and seven fellow firefighters gathered at the York Village Fire Station. But within minutes they were on the road to help, heading to Massachusetts, where massive gas explosions and multiple fires were crippling Lawrence, Andover and North Andover. “We were meeting at the station for training and were watching the Boston news. We have (firefighter) friends in North Andover and Lawrence — it’s such a big fraternity,” said Balentine, a 33-year veteran of

the York Fire Department. They immediately went into action, loading their Southern Maine Advanced Rehab Team — SMART, for short — truck with water and food and got on the road. The SMART truck, speciallyequipped to provide several services in emergencies, has a breathing station, cooling misters, a mobile kitchen, a fax machine, telephone and a lighting plant to provide electricity. The vehicle is “invaluable on any fire scene and is frequent-

ly called to area fires in many neighboring towns and even in towns that don’t border York,” notes the department web site. And that’s what Balentine and his cohorts, including Stephen Carr, Ryan Michel, Yves

Lessard, Lisa Desotelle, David Butler, Dan Gile and Dan Chapman did last week. His crew was assigned to Staging Area II in the North Andover Mall, Balentine recalled. “We set up our truck and

provided air cylinders and lighting and a large scale cooking operation for firefighters, police, EMTs and utility personnel. It was a large, large cookout for See GAS page 6...

As the country’s biggest National Estuaries Day celebration, Punkinfiddle helps visitors discover why estuaries, those places where rivers meet the sea, are so important for marine life and for people. “Punkinfiddle is a traditional New England fall festival with a science twist,” said Nik Charov, president of Laudholm

Trust. “Kids dance and play in our wide open spaces, but they also get to discover the past, present, and future of our local environments.” Visiting the Wells Reserve for the day will be a violin maker, pumpkin and vegetable carvers, wool spinners and weavers, a stained glass artist, and other talented people who keep Maine traditions alive. YORK If you think getting dressed every morning is a chore, imagine what it took for a woman to look good in the 1700s. There were petticoats and stays, of course, but also a whole lot of other things

under those skirts. From detachable “pockets to hip pads and bum rolls designed to lift a woman’s skirts and make her waist look small, it was no easy task to assemble an outfit. Curious to know exactly

what it took to get dressed in the 18th century? Hannah Peterson and Kristel Henry will explain the complexities of a woman’s wardrobe at the Old York Museum Center, 3 Lindsay Road, York, on Saturday, September 29. Free with admission. Having studied with prestigious StoneCamryn School of Ballet, Diggins moved from Chicago to New York to study with the tap classicist Paul Draper, and in 1957 formed the Mattison Trio with Guy Tanno and Dorothy Matthews, a balletic tap ensemble which for 10 years appeared on television, and in nightclubs and summer theaters worldwide. Later he obtained a doctorate in Psychology, taught at Brooklyn College, and after retiring from teaching moved to Kittery performing Morton Gould’s Concerto for Tap Dancer and Orchestra at the Houston Symphony’s 75th Anniversary Concert and continued to perform balletic tap choreography to classical works by Bach, Handel, Haydn and others. He is the recipient of the 2013 Hoofer Award from the American Tap Dance Foundation which recognizes prominent tap artists as leaders in the community for their unique contribution to the form and for inspiring future generations, and the 2005 recipient of the Tapestry Award for Life Achievement in Tap from the National Heritage Museum in Lexington, MA. Take a Walk and Share a Story in Douglas Memorial Woods

ELIOT Douglas Memorial Woods now boasts Great Works Regional Land TrustĂ•s first StoryWalk¨. A fun, interactive enhancement to a walk in the woods, StoryWalk¨ combines family time, recreation, nature appreciation, and literacy. The StoryWalk¨ will officially open on Saturday September 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during Eliot Festival Days, hosted by members of the Eliot-South Berwick Rotary Club. The first story installment at Douglas Memorial Woods features a familiar theme in Ă’Those Darn SquirrelsĂ“ by Adam Rubin, illustrated by Daniel Salmieri. Old man Fookwire doesnĂ•t like the squirrels that scare the birds away from his feeders. The stories presented on the StoryWalk¨ will change with the season, offering a new experience for repeat visitors. Local librarians C.J. Mauger (Marshwood High School), Karen Eger (South Berwick Public Library), and Lydia Goodwin (William Fogg Public Library), collaborated with the Great Works Regional Land Trust to install the StoryWalk¨. Funding came

from the Maine Public Library Income Tax Checkoff Fund, Kennebunk Savings, and the Eliot-South Berwick Rotary Club, with help from the Friends of the South Berwick Public Library. To visit the StoryWalk¨, park at the John F. Hill Grange Hall across from the Eliot library and walk south on State Rd. to the signed entrance to Douglas Memorial Woods (1392 State Rd.) Find the first story board as you walk to the left at the trail fork. Follow the story around the woods by walking through 20 stations around the ž-mile loop walk of the trail. The StoryWalk¨ Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg Hubbard Library. StoryWalk¨ is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson. Great Works Regional Land Trust is a member supported nonprofit dedicated to the protection of the natural, historical, agricultural, scenic and recreational resources within the Maine communities of Eliot, North Berwick, South Berwick, Berwick, Wells and Ogunquit. KITTERY ÒI never thought it could happen here.Ó ÒFinding out it was him makes a lot of sense now.Ó ÒThere are no words; it was sheer terror, everyone was traumatized.Ó These are the words of those who experienced schoolplace shootings. For sure, there are many kinds of violence in schools - bullying, cyber bullying, sexual and verbal abuse - and all of these should be addressed. The next school shooter may well be a product of any or all of these. A recent report sponsored by the EducatorÕs School Safety Network found that there was a 113% increase in violent incidents in schools in the 2017-2018 school year. Amy Klinger, coauthor of the report, suggests, ÒThe main reason schools are seeing an increase in violence is because not enough preventive action is taken until itÕs too late.Ó Superintendent Eric Waddell and his team, including Kittery Schools, police and fire departments, have developed a Crisis Plan to protect staff and students in the event of a school emergency.

Sandy Hook Promise is a non-profit group formed by parents of children lost in the Sandy Hook shooting in December of 2012. Their ÒKnow the SignsÓ program suggests that 80% of school shooters told someone of their violent plans prior to the event. The greater the awareness of those in the community, the greater the possibility of prevention. $5 Million Secured for Textbook Grants WASHINGTON, DC Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) today applauded the inclusion of a provision allocating $5 million in additional funding for the continued implementation of the Open Textbooks Pilot in the FY19 Departments of Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Package. The Open Textbooks Pilot is a competitive grant program to support the creation and expand the use of open college textbooks— textbooks that are available under an open license, allowing professors, students, researchers, and others to freely access the materials. “College is expensive enough – textbooks shouldn’t drive the price even higher,” said Senator King. “The Open Textbooks Pilot is an important opportunity to expand the use of free educational resources at schools across the country, making sure that students have affordable access to the tools they need to succeed.” Senator King has been a leader on this issue, along with Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.). In April, King, Durbin, and Smith led 23 of their Senate colleagues in a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-H) pressing them to provide additional funding for the program in the FY19 funding bill. The program was created with an initial $5 million investment in the FY18 Omnibus. The Department is in the process of reviewing applications for FY18 grants under the Pilot and is expected to an-

nounce the first awards soon. Durbin, King, and Smith, along with Representatives Jared Polis (D-Colo.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ari.) in the House, have been working to ensure the program is effectively implemented by the Department of Education – sending letters to Secretary Betsy DeVos in April and August. Today’s bill also includes report language to ensure that the Department: Awards FY19 funds through a new grant competition; Uses the funds to provide a greater number of grants in FY19 – at least 20 grants with individual grants amounting to $100,000 to $1 million; Provides institutions at

least 60 days to apply for grant funds; and Requires any tools, technologies, or other resources developed with grant funds for use with an open textbooks to also be open and freely available. The College Board estimates that the average student at a four-year public institution of higher education should budget $1,250 for college books and supplies during the 201718 academic year and $1,420 for students at community colleges. According to a survey by U.S. PIRG, 65 percent of students decided not to buy a textbook because of the cost and 94 percent of those students worried it would negatively affect their grade.

Health & Fitness Senate Passes “Gag Clauses” Prohibition Regarding Prescriptions WASHINGTON, DC By a vote of 98-2, the Senate passed legislation authored by U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) to remove barriers that can prevent patients from paying the lowest possible prices for their prescription drugs. The Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act would prohibit the use of “gag clauses” by health insurers and pharmacy benefit managers, an egregious practice that conceals lower prescription drug prices from some patients at the pharmacy, causing consumers to needlessly overpay. The bill, which was cosponsored by a bipartisan group of 24 Senators, now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration. “Insurance is intended to save consumers money. Gag clauses that prevent pharmacists from telling patients how to pay the lowest possible price for their prescription drugs do the opposite,” said Senator Collins. “A recent study of 9.5 million insurance claims found that 23 percent of customers overpaid for their prescriptions when using insurance. Our bipartisan legislation to stop this egregious practice will help lower the cost of prescription drugs, saving consumers money and improving health care.” “Nearly one in four Americans pay more for their prescriptions than they need to—and at a time when drug prices are skyrocketing and Missourians are struggling to pay for their prescriptions, that’s just unacceptable,” Senator McCaskill said. Pharmacy gag clauses forbid pharmacists from proactively telling consumers if their prescription would cost less if they paid for it out-of-pocket rather than using their insurance plan. Pharmacists who disobey these clauses face significant penalties. The Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act would prohibit an insurer or pharmacy benefit manager from restricting a pharmacy’s ability to provide drug price information to a plan enrollee when there is a difference between the cost of the drug under the plan and the cost of the drug when purchased without insurance. This bill would apply to plans offered through exchanges and by private employers.

Nearly 60 percent of Americans, including roughly 90 percent of seniors, take prescription drugs. In 2016, Americans spent as much as $340 billion on prescription drugs, including $45 billion out of pocket. More than forty organizations support banning this unfair restriction, including the National Community Pharmacists Association, the American Medical Association, the Alliance for Transparent and Affordable Prescriptions, the ERISA Industry Committee, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, and America’s Health Insurance Plans.

Sweeping Opioids Package Passes Senate WASHINGTON, DC In response to the opioid epidemic that is claiming the lives of tens of thousands of Americans and hundreds of Mainers each year, the Senate has passed the Opioid Crisis Response Act. The bipartisan package, which was approved by a vote of 99-1, includes more than 70 proposals recommended to the full Senate by five committees. “It is imperative that we work together to combat the opioid crisis, which killed 418

people in Maine last year and led to nearly 1,000 babies being born addicted to opioids and other drugs in our state alone,” said U.S. Senator Susan Collins. Senator Collins’ provisions are based on two bipartisan bills she authored to help ensure that unused prescription drugs do not fall into the wrong hands and to bolster peer support networks for long-term recovery. Specifically, they include: The Safe Disposal of Unused Medication Act cosponsored by Senators Maggie

Hassan (D-NH), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). This provision would allow hospice staff, such as physicians, registered nurses, and nurse practitioners, to dispose of unused prescription drugs after a hospice patient dies or a medication expires. Currently, hospice staff are not allowed to dispose of unused medications. As a result, dangerous medications with a high risk of diversion, theft, and abuse are frequently left in the deceased person’s home. The National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) sent a letter in support of this legislation. The Opioid Peer Support Networks Act cosponsored by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (DNH). This provision would foster the creation of peer support networks, also known as communities in recovery, and it would provide them with the resources and training they need to succeed. Peer support networks engage individuals who are in recovery with other peers facing substance use disorders to provide long-term support in employment, education, housing, and overall wellbeing. Senator Collins witnessed these individuals’ tremendous sense of hope and resiliency when she vis-

ited the Bangor Area Recovery Network, or BARN, in Brewer, Maine, last year. The Maine Alliance for Addiction Recovery in Augusta and the Portland Recovery Community Center also provide peer support networks to serve central and southern parts of Maine. A growing body of research is showing that peer support networks reduce relapse, enhance wellbeing, and improve long-term recovery. While relapse is common in addiction treatment, with rates between 40 and 60 percent, peer recovery supports have demonstrated reduced relapse rates and increased treatment retention. Eighty-eight Recovery Community Organizations across the country, from Portland, ME, to Seattle, WA, have submitted a letter of support. The Opioid Crisis Response

Act also takes numerous other steps to reduce the use and supply of opioids, encourage recovery, support caregivers and families, and drive longterm solutions. One provision Senator Collins cosponsored, the Synthetics Trafficking and Overdose Prevention (STOP) Act, would help stop shipments of synthetic drugs like fentanyl from being shipped through our postal system. Last year, overdoses claimed the life of more than one Mainer per day, making this one of the top causes of death in the state. In 2016, there were more than 63,600 drug overdose deaths nationally. Since the beginning of this year, Congress has approved approximately $8.4 billion to combat the opioid crisis.

Kittery Resident Part of Team to Protect Caribbean from Lionfish Invasion KITTERY / WORCESTER, MA Undergraduate students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) are building an autonomous underwater robot that could help reduce the threat posed by an invasive species of fish that, if left unchecked, could threaten the well-being of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems in Coastal U.S. and Caribbean waters. One of the students working on this project is Kittery native, Joseph Lombardi. He and his team are developing a robot designed to autonomously hunt for and harvest lionfish.

The project’s goal is to reduce the impact of the invasive species on marine ecosystems from the Caribbean up to the coasts of Florida and Georgia. Since the fish is a pricey delicacy, the robot also could provide a new source of income for local fishermen. Joseph’s team worked this past academic year to develop several systems that will enable the submersible robot to distinguish lionfish from other species and spear them. The robot could provide fishermen, who normally scuba dive to spear their catch, a more efficient and safe way to harvest the fish, which have poi-

sonous spines that are painful to touch. A graduation requirement for every WPI student, these team-based design or research projects give students professional-level experience. Team member Brandon Kelly, who focused on the robot’s computer vision system said, “I’ve seen the massive devastation caused by these fish and it really made me want to work on this project. We felt like we could create some change in the world.” Lionfish, a colorful aquarium fish native to the South Pacific and Indian oceans, have become a serious problem in the

of death and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally, more than 15 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Since 1989, the

Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. To find out more about the Alzheimer’s Association®, visit www.alz.org or call 800272-3900.

...WALK from page 20 Fundraising for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s continues through the end of the calendar year. Donate to a team or individual participant at www.alz. org/walk. In Maine alone, there are more than 28,000 people living with the disease and 69,000 caregivers providing unpaid care. In the United States, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, the sixth-leading cause

High-tech autonomous submersible craft like this one could harvest invasive species that damage critical reefs and deplete valuable fish supplies.

Caribbean and western Atlantic. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) calls them the “poster child for invasive species.” With no predators outside of their native waters, the population is expanding at an astonishing rate, putting additional stress on coral reefs already struggling from the effects of climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Harvesting the fish could be an economic boon to the region, since they can fetch up to $20 per pound, making them not only a food source for fishermen but a solid source of

income, as well. Currently there are commercial robots that could be used to harvest lionfish, but they must be directed by an operator connected to the robot by a tether, which could damage fragile reefs. The goal of the WPI robot would be an untethered unit that could hunt for fish on its own without human direction, recognize a lionfish and spear it. Abuoyant spear tip would then detach and float the fish to the surface where it could be collected by fisherman with multiple robots further maximizing the catch.

KENNEBUNK This fun and handsome dude is seeking an active family. Four year old German Wirehaired Pointer Max wants an active home that will keep him physically and mentally challenged. He loves to go swimming in the summer and skijoring in the winter. He enjoys playing fetch, and yes, he does love to hunt birds. While Max is friendly and affectionate and loves all the people he has ever met, he doesn’t do well with other fourlegged beings. Thus, he needs to be the ONLY pet in the home. He’s done well in shelter dog obedience class, and will jump, climb and even “smile for the camera for a treat! He’s a

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Spirit is the perfect name for this cat! When we first met Spirit at a holding facility up north, she had been confined to a steel cage on the bottom row of a bank of cages holding both cats and barking dogs for a full year! There was no question she was coming back with us, even though she wasn’t on the list. Our initial examination uncovered a condition that flagged her for temporary isolation and weekly vet trips for treatment. During her isolation, we found she was very hungry for human touch. She even purred as she was lifted into a carrier for her weekly vet trips. Although initially fearful and wary, she loved to sit on our laps, be talked to and pet gently. She also was playful! After another round of treatment and isolation Spirit is

finally ready for adoption. She’s healthy, needs no medication, and is one of the most deserving kitties you’ll ever meet. She’s had a very unfair life, yet her Spirit is unbroken. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Hello Computer Lady, You are such a help to both newbies and experienced. My question is actually for my wife. She, unfortunately, encountered a ransomware bug a couple years ago. It encrypted her photos and documents. She didn’t pay the ransom. Since then she has used the same computer but is lax about backing the drive up. Some of the docs and pics are still encrypted and we wonder if backing it up would be a problem, ie with the ransomware possibly still on her system? We hate to delete the encrypted photos etc as we are hoping on hope that a fix might be found. Those photos are old old family pics that cannot be replaced easily. Any ideas how to approach the backup problem? Thanks, Don Dear Don, This is an excellent question! First, the encrypted files themselves are not a danger to your computer, and you can continue to back them up without worry. And, there might be a chance you can restore those old photos in time. I know that Emsisoft at www.emsisoft.com has figured out how to recover some of the encrypted files. You can check it out on their website. Second, I just want to caution you to make sure that you have completely removed the ransomware from the computer so that new files won’t be encrypted. Also, you want to make sure you have a good security software on the computer to prevent future infections. Again, Emsisoft at www.emsisoft.com will do an excellent job of protecting your computer. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I belong to a quilting group and need to send all 12 girls updates and messages. I’m having trouble grouping the contacts together under a quilting group. It takes so much time to send each one individually. I use a mini iPad and use my gmail account. I have googled some instructions but for some reason this old brain can’t follow those directions. Would you have clearer directions for me to follow. Thanks, Barb Dear Barb, Creating a group in Gmail is a lot easier than sending 12 emails one at a time. Lets see how we can do this. First, it is easier to do on your computer if you have access to one, but it can be done on your iPad as well. 1. To start, open your web browser on either your computer or iPad and go to www. google.com/contacts. This will display your Google Contacts with a list in the main section of the window, and navigation links in the left column. 2. Click on “Labels in the left column. 3. Click on “Create

WS

The Weekly Sentinel 27

Label in the left column. 4. Type a name for your group in the box provided, then click the “OK button. You will now have an empty group (now called Labels) with no members. 5. Now, go back to your list of contacts (Click “Contacts in the left column) and click or tap on the name of the contact that you want to add to your group. 6. When the contact’s details are displayed in a smaller pop-up window, click on the icon with three vertical dots in the upper-right corner. 7. In the drop-down menu, find the section called, “Change Labels and click on the name of the group you want to add your contact to, A check mark will appear in front of the group name. The next time you want to send an email to your quilting group, just type the name of your label in the “To: section and the email will be addressed to the entire group. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a desktop computer with Windows 10. I am trying to set up a program that needs me to enter the IP address. How do I find the IP address of my computer? Thank you, Traci

Dear Traci, Every computer that is connected to a network, or the internet needs an IP address. Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to find it in Windows 10. Lets start by looking in the Control Panel. 1. Right click on the “Start icon (the white flag) and click on “Control Panel in the context menu that appears. 2. In the Control Panel, click on “Network and Internet. (If you don’t see “Network and Internet click next to “View by: and select “Category. 3. Click on “Network and Sharing Center 4. In the Network and sharing center, you will see your active networks (usually only 1) Find the section with Access type, homegroup and connections. Click on the blue word to the right of “Connections: and a status box will open. 5. Click on the “Details button in that status box and another box will open. Your IP address will be in that list. Next, we will look in the Windows 10 “settings app to find the IP address. This might be a little easier to find than the Control Panel. 1. Click on the start icon, then click the settings icon (it looks like a little gear) in the lower-left

corner of the menu. (or use the keyboard to press the windows logo key and the letter, I at the same time) 2. In the Settings app, click on “Network and Internet. 3. Click on your connection type in the left column, usually either ethernet or Wi-Fi. 4. Click on the connection at the top of the right column and your IP address will be displayed. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am using Windows backup to keep my files backed up. I have found where my pictures, documents and favorites are stored, but I am not sure where the emails and contacts are kept. I am using Thunderbird, and when I asked at the store, the tech told me that Thunderbird messages can’t be backed up or transferred. If this is true, I need to find a new email program, I need my messages and contacts! Thank you, Debbie Dear Debbie, Not only is it possible to backup and/or transfer your thunderbird files, it is easier than most email programs. Thunderbird saves your personal information like messag-

es and contacts in a set of files and folders called a “Profile. All you have to do is find and backup and/or copy the profile folders and you will be backed up. Thunderbird can actually show you where your profile folders are located. Here is how to get that information: 1. Open Thunderbird. 2. Click on the menu icon (3 horizontal lines in the upper-right corner) point to “Help and click on “Troubleshooting Information 3. In the, “Application Basics section, find the “Profile Folder section and click on the “Show Folder button. 4. This will open the folder containing all your files, and the location of that folder See COMPUTER page 28...

Thank you for continuing to support us and “Help Us to Help Them too! Do you have a few hours a week to spare? We desperately need volunteers both at our adoption facility to do cleaning, cat socializing, fostering, some administrative duties, helping us with fundraising, training and recruitment of other volunteers etc... and we are also seeking

more thrift store volunteers too as we would like to expand our thrift store hours. Retail and marketing experience would be helpful but we welcome all help! David J. Wilford, 57 WELLS – David J. Wilford passed peacefully on September 13, 2018, at his home in Wells after a courageous fight with cancer. David was born on August 12, 1961, with his twin brother Jeff, in Norfolk, VA, to his parents Donald and Mary Jeanne Wilford (Perry). The son of a Navy commander, David grew up in Connecticut, California, Maryland and Maine, and graduated from York High School in 1979. He married Amy Martinez in 1990 with whom he welcomed his first son, Dylan in 1992, and second son Asher in 1994. In 2018, David married Julie Gilbert, becoming stepfather to Julie’s children, Liam and Liliana. David carried on family tradition by joining the Navy in 1982 and was stationed in the Persian Gulf. After his stint in the Navy, David worked as an apprentice at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and ran a countertop and cabinet company, before ultimately becoming one of the key maintenance personnel at York Hospital. It was there that David found his true calling and was one of the most driven and knowledgeable crewmen there, proud of his expertise maintaining the boilers and generators that kept the hospital running smoothly. He was adored and admired amongst his coworkers; everybody knew “Dave, and he knew everybody. His smile was as big as his heart, and he had a glow that everyone was naturally drawn to. As an avid fan of classic rock-n-roll, David picked up the drums at a young age, and enjoyed playing with band “The Fugitive, with brothers Jeff and See WILFORD page 34...

Students Lead Student Body in Pledge of Allegiance

WELLS For over a decade, small groups of Wells Elementary School students have been invited to the principal’s office to lead the entire student body and staff in the morning Pledge of Allegiance. As with the school’s previous principals, students now walk to Principal April Noble’s office to recite the pledge over the school’s intercom system at 8:45 a.m. each school day. On September 12, two girls and two boys – students of Trevor Hopwood – made the familiar journey from classroom to the school lobby area. This time it was fourth grade students

Francesca (Frankie) MacEwen, Evan Suitter, Tanner Tufts, and Kailyne Twombley who gathered around Principal Noble at her desk to speak into the phone. “It made me feel good to do the pledge because I was leading the school, commented Evan Suitter later. In September, student selection for this began with the fourth grade classrooms and

will continue down through the other grades including the begindergarten level. And so, by the time school ends for summer break in June, every student at WES will have participated. Noble also involves the school’s students with yoga for a few minutes each week. On Friday mornings, a few students travel to her office so that she can lead them in a brief
