Linda Bean Announces Fall and Winter Season at Ogunquit Beach Lobster House

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Reporter

OGUNQUIT Linda Bean cut into a wide red ribbon with an oversized pair of scissors last Thursday, declaring her stunning new Ogunquit Beach Lobster House officially open. She also said that she and her dedicated staff are thrilled to be a part of Ogunquit’s thriving restaurant scene and anticipate a bevy of events and specials to keep locals and visitors content, happy and well-fed through the

fall and winter. “Welcome to the new phase at Ogunquit Beach Lobster House, said Bean during the ceremony. “We have opened little by little over the summer and are ready today to announce we are moving on into the fall and winter to serve the residents and friends of Ogunquit. The event capped a successful summer season at the new eatery, which opened in early July on the site of the former Blue Water Inn by Ogun-

quit Beach and overlooking the Ogunquit River. Bean, a Perkins Cove resident, successful businesswoman and a granddaughter of the late L.L. Bean, the outdoor clothing and camping magnate, stepped into the project in the spring, when realtor Don Wunder brought the property to her attention. Owner Roger LaPierre, who had owned the popular spot with his wife Lee for many years, was in the midst of rebuilding the property after a huge fire two years earlier had destroyed it. When Lee passed away last winter, LaPierre decided to sell the property even though most of the renovations were complete. “At first I said, ‘wait, Don! I am retiring. I love Ogunquit, but I am not ready to start a completely new venture, Bean

recalled. “Don kept insisting I must see what was already rebuilt from the ashes of the fire. She and Veronika Carlson, her business successor, visited the site, took one look and decided to take the project on. “Veronika said, ‘This is an awesome place — let’s go for it! Bean was committed from the start to keeping it open yearround. “My theory is that the more places that stay open, the bigger the draw to Ogunquit. It’s a yearround destination where you can walk the beach and shop the stores, Bean told The Weekly Sentinel in a July interview. She and her manager Cindy Kanale plan many events to entice folks to come enjoy Ogunquit Beach Lobster House all year. “My head is full of many ideas for this place for a busy fall

Samsung Invites Teachers to Help Students “Solve for Tomorrow through Competition

STATEWIDE Last year, Wells High School in Wells, was named state winner in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest for their work to improve the local community. Jason Hludik entered the program, and with his students, won $25,000 in technology while encouraging students to use STEAM skills to improve the local Wells area. Today, other local schools can enter the 2017-2018 contest for a chance to win part of the $2 million prize. Samsung has announced the launch of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, welcoming U.S. public school teachers who teach in public schools including Charter Schools that are 50% or more publicly funded to submit ideas on how their students can use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) to address a real-world problem in their community.

Solve for Tomorrow aims to raise awareness and enthusiasm for STEAM subjects among students in 6th-12th grade. Solve for Tomorrow was created to help close that gap and inspire the future innovators of this growing sector. Economic experts estimate that the U.S. will need approximately one million more STEAM professionals than it will produce at the current rate over the next decade*. “While there’s a growing chasm between education and career opportunities, there’s no shortage of students who are excited to creatively address problems they see every day – it’s a matter of helping them draw connections between STEAM and the real world, said Ann Woo, Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship, Samsung Electronics America. “The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest gets students engaged through hands-on learning to em-

power the student who already has their eyes set on a future in STEAM, as well as inspire the student who never previously considered it. We encourage teachers to enter this contest and to engage their students on this journey. The $2 million** contest awards schools in every U.S. state and the District of Columbia, recognizing hundreds of schools throughout the phased program for their achievements. Today through Thursday, November 9, 2017, teachers can enter the contest online by answering three simple questions detailing how

their students will use STEAM to combat a local challenge. From environmental to health, safety to nutrition, equality to poverty, and more – any matter that’s important to students and their communities can be submitted to the contest. New this year, Samsung has created a referral giveaway program to get all public school employees involved. While only teachers of 6th-12th grade may enter the contest, employees at U.S. public schools can refer their educator colleagues to complete a contest submission and they will be entered for a chance to

win a Samsung Galaxy Note8 or Samsung 65 TV. Teachers must name their referrer in their application, and Samsung will randomly select five referral winners. Since 2002, Samsung has provided more than $46 million to more than 1,000 public schools and community organizations in the United States through its many citizenship initiatives. To enter the contest, and for contest rules, please visit www.samsung.com/solve. *President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Engage to excel: producing one million additional college graduates with degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Executive Office of the President of the United States, 2012). **$2 million prize is based on an estimated retail value. ~ News ~ Scam Alert: Cons Take Advantage of Hurricane Victims WASHINGTON, D.C. A warning from the leaders of the Senate Aging Committee: Be on the lookout for con artists trying to take advantage of victims in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Bob Casey (D-PA), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Aging Committee, are urging people, particularly older Americans, to be cautious of con artists who often target vulnerable communities following natural disasters. Reports from federal agencies such as FEMA, the Federal Trade Commission, IRS, and others, indicate scammers are calling people in hopes of stealing money for reasons related to recent hurricanes. Such calls could be about phony relief funds and charities, fraudulent flood insurance premiums past due notices, and unlicensed contractors helping with cleanup efforts who demand payment up-front

for work they never do or simply lack the skills, licenses, and insurance to legally do the work. “Putting a stop to aggressive and ruthless scams targeted at older Americans is one of our top priorities on the Senate Aging Committee, said Senators Collins and Casey in a joint statement. “In these times of crisis, criminals will undoubt-

edly try to take advantage of those in need. While their actions are despicable, it is best to be diligent about who you are dealing with over the phone, and to check with your local officials for reputable sources of aid. If you suspect fraud or suspicious activity, call your local police department or the Fraud Hotline at 1-855-303-9470.

Safe Haven Animal Shelter WELLS Meet Prince and Shelby. Prince arrived at Safe Haven in 2011. He and his siblings were a tight-knit family. Shelby, who also arrived with her siblings, became strongly-bonded with Prince. A very large kitty with very long hair, Prince makes a striking presence. Shelby has short black hair and is a fraction of Prince’s size. She’s shy and hesitant to be touched. They constantly hang out together, rubbing against each other, leaning on each other, sleeping together. They’re best friends. Shelby seems reserved, looking for kindness in someone’s actions. If she feels safe with you, she doesn’t run off. She waits to give you a chance. She’s sure to blossom in a home of her own -- with Prince of course! They must stay together. Adoption fees for both kitties are waived as they are in our ‘Together for Life’ program. Our only goal is to find a kind and cat-knowledgeable home for them, with someone who will patiently work with Shelby to come “forward. As you know, many fearful kitties blossom into happy, lovable and confident pets, once they’re in good homes. And we want Prince and Shelby to have the same chance. Both have waited a long time and deserve a happy, loving home. Please come and visit them at our Adoption Center. We’re also looking for a temporary foster home for two kitties: a pregnant, semi-feral kitty who is closely bonded to her shy sister (who’s not pregnant). The sisters are each other’s greatest comfort. Could you open a quiet

room in your home for these two, and give them your loving attention? You’d be helping both continue their socialization, while witnessing the miracle of birth. FMI call Joyce 207-229-8314. Got a few hours a week to spare? We sure could use volunteer help at our adoption center mornings and evenings. If interested, please email info@safehavenhumanesoicety.org or ask for an application at our shelter.

NORTH BERWICK Meet Adorable Rex, a threeyear-old Chihuahua mix from a shelter in Louisiana looking for a fun family up north! If you would like a meet and greet with Rex, call Emma’s Angles Rescue 207-6765599. Rex is in North Berwick.

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Happy Birthday Barney and Meera (pictured left) ! This delightful brother-sister duo turns 3-years-old on Monday, September 25. For their birthday, they ask for nothing more than a new family to love and a new place to call home! in the 7 months they have been here, they have gotten more and more confident and comfortable. While they still enjoy quiet places to rest, they are exploring their surroundings and spending time with the people that stop in and visit. They are especially active in the evenings when they are known to scoot about as curious house cats. Barney and Meera have a condition called radial hypoplasia. It’s a genetic birth defect that causes their limbs to be crooked. It’s not contagious and does not affect their overall health. They can get around just fine and use a (low rimmed) litter box with no problems. They ask that in their new home, all their necessities (food, water and litterbox) be on one level so they don’t have to climb stairs. They would also like their new home to be carpeted for easier traction. AWS has plenty of carpet squares to send home with their new people to help Barney and Meera transition to their new home.

Exhibitions with a particular theme provide the opportunity to show a variety of work by numerous artists. The theme “take flight is interpreted in many ways and includes “winged things such as birds, insects, kites and planes, but can also solicit philosophical and social commentary.

The found object sculptures by Portsmouth artist Michael Stasiuk are always a crowd pleaser. He made four new pieces in response to the theme: “Bird Tree, “Bunny Pilots, “Boy with a Glider, and “A Lady who is waiting for her flight. They all have the artist’s signature characteristics of humor, personality and craftsmanship. A wide variety of birds are represented throughout the show. Egrets and geese by Susan Amons, crows by Lissa

The new Yamaha Grand Piano at Trinity Church

YORK HARBOR A marvelous Yamaha grand piano has come to Trinity as a gift from the family of Marian Craig. Late in 2016 the family of Marian Gerrish Craig (1919-2015) of Kittery Point, elected to part with her beloved Yamaha grand piano which she had bought, new, a generation before. The event will be celebrated with a concert held on Friday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. Famous as a piano teacher of tact and consummate skill, Marian was also a church musician in the Seacoast area for most of her long career in music, so it seemed logical to offer the pristine instrument as a charitable donation to Trinity Church, York Harbor, just six miles up the road. The church, for its part, had a real need for a good piano because the increasingly successful Trinity Summer Concert Series had been dependent upon an electronic piano, and performers of greater and greater skills were reaching that instrument's limitations all too readily. The instrument has proven to be as powerful as it is beautiful, and guest artists are eager to perform on it. The Trustees of Trinity

Church now plan a Celebratory Recital on Friday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m. to honor and thank the Craigs, Don and Merry, who made the decision to donate the piano in memory of Marian, and will be present. A formal solo piano recital will present Prof. Christopher Kies of the University of New Hampshire music faculty in a program of works by J. S. Bach, Frederick Chopin, Scott Joplin and others, designed to demonstrate the considerable

capabilities of the instrument. Dr. Kies has taught piano, theory, and composition at UNH since 1979. His bachelors degrees, in piano and in composition, are from the New England Conservatory and his M.F.A. and Ph. D., both in composition, are from Brandeis University. The concert, held at Trinity Church, York Street and Woodbridge Road, York Harbor, will be free and open to the public; an offering will be gratefully received.

Museum Collecting History during Museum Day Live! KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum will celebrate local history on Saturday, September 23, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Museum will free admission for Saturday only as part of Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day Live! A nationwide event, Museum Day offers free admission to visitors presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket at a participating museum or cultural institution. Additionally, the Museum invites visitors to celebrate their own history through oral history recording sessions, and the scanning and digitizing of your own personal photographs with the help of Museum staff. On September 23, the Museum will have trained oral history interviewers ready to speak with anyone who has memories of the Fire of ’47 or the year 1968, specifically (though any time period is welcomed!). It is recommended that anyone interested in recording an interview call the Museum at 207985-4802 to make sure there is an appointment available. Museum Day visitors to the Museum are also invited to bring in personal photographs, negatives, slides, and glass plates (up to five per person) for the Museum staff to scan on the Museum’s high-resolution archival photograph scanners, to help you preserve your images for the future. Please bring a flash

drive or CD with you to take the images home (or provide an email address). This will be free of charge, with donations accepted. Inclusive by design, the event represents Smithsonian’s commitment to make learning and the spread of knowledge accessible to everyone, giving museums across all 50 states the opportunity to emulate the admission policy of the Smithsonian Museums in Washington D.C. Last year’s event drew over 400,000 participants, and this year’s event expects record – high participation.

This year, participants in Museum Day Live! at the Brick Store Museum will be able to visit the following exhibits: Once Upon a Time in Maine: Fairy Tale Art & Artifacts (last weekend for this show!); The Fire of ’47 Retrospective; Polite Society: Etiquette Past & Present, and the popular Aweigh We Go: Sailing Ships of the Kennebunks. The Museum Day Live! ticket and more information on the Local History Collection Day will be available through the Brick Store Museum’s website at www.brickstoremuseum.org.

...GALLERY from page 11 along the Atlantic flyway between Tierra del Fuego and the Canadian Arctic have in total exceeded the distance to the moon. Visitors spend considerable time viewing a slide show of bird photography by John Owen. His enthusiasm for bird photography took off a few years ago, quite accidently, when he decided to bring a small camera with him when he took his dog for a walk. Eventually the camera got larger and the dog didn’t always get to come along. His crisp, colorful and very professional photographs capture birds in flight, catching prey, and in their habitats. Included are some dramatic images of the York River eagle with a large fish in his talons

While bidding on the vast array of items, attendees also enjoyed music provided by Rob Spaulding on the porch and the incredible ocean view! “Amazing items”, “what a great event”, and “ so happy to support this great endeavor!” were only a few of the comments from the guests! Over 75 items were displayed for viewing and auction including, original oil and watercolor paintings, handcrafted and signed furniture, incredible

Gift Certificates, fine estate jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, handmade quilts and much more! This, the Second Annual Silent Auction hosted by The Friends of the Town House School, proved to be another successful fundraiser for the group. the KHS Boards. Together, Friends of the Town House School and the Kennebunkport Historical Society are “committed to preserve local history so that succeeding generations may benefit from knowledge of the past”, and especially, FTHS is committed to saving the Town House School and to restore the building so that once again, it can be used as a gathering place for our community. Wells Reserve hosts 15th Punkinfiddle Family Festival WELLS The Punkinfiddle family festival returns to the Wells Reserve at Laudholm for its 15th year on Saturday, September 30, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Punkinfiddle features traditional arts, oldtime games, farm animals, lively music, tasty food, a little science, and miles of smiles in a beautiful seaside setting. Kids 16 and under get in free and adults pay just $7 ($5 for Laudholm members). As the country’s largest National Estuaries Day celebration, Punkinfiddle helps visitors discover why estuaries, those places where rivers meet the sea, are so important for marine life and for people. “Punkinfiddle is a traditional New England festival with a science twist,” said Nik Charov, president of Laudholm Trust. “Kids dance and play in our wide open spaces, but they also get to discover the past, present, and future of our local environment.” Visiting the Wells Reserve for the day will be wool spinners

and weavers, a violin maker, a pumpkin carver, a beekeeper, a basket weaver, a broom maker, and other talented people who keep Maine traditions alive. Everpopular sheep-herding dogs will return to demonstrate their skill. On the solar-powered stage, Jackson Gillman, “stand-up chameleon,” tells stories about the ocean and coast at 10:30am, followed by musical guests The Violin Movers, Zach Ovington and Michael Arciero, and other performers to be announced. Punkinfiddle is generously sponsored by Camden National Bank, Sevigney-Lyons Insurance Agency, Kittery Trading Post, Duffy’s Tavern & Grill, Maine magazine, and Roger A. Auger & Associates, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. The Wells Reserve is located on Laudholm Farm Road, just off Routes 1 and 9 near the Wells-Kennebunk line. For more information and updates, visit wellsreserve.org/punkinfiddle or call 207-646-1555.

who predeceased her in 1993. Lillian showed determination by putting herself through high school and then nursing school with various live-in jobs including nanny, house aid, cook’s assistant, and elder companion. For more than 25 years, she enjoyed a gratifying career as a Registered Nurse. She started at the bottom – yes, bed pans; then floor nurse, maternity ward nurse, geriatric nurse (back to the bed pans) until finally becoming a supervisor. Because she most loved being a handson care-giver, her final years of nursing were in private practice (more bedpans, just nicer). She attended sports, band, and other activities for the kids. Her memory of family, history, and events was incredible. Lillian enjoyed camping, traveling, and hunting, even bagging her own deer near home, while the men came back from the Allagash empty handed. Lillian became a Sudoku fanatic, designing her own games and inventing new ways to do them. She is survived by 3 children and their spouses: Rita & Harvey Barr of So. Your Rhubarb is now growing like crazy, so let’s cook something that taste like what we have been dreaming about all winter long, rhubarb cobbler with the added flavor of fresh strawberries. If you do not grow rhubarb in your garden, now is the time to plant it for next year and the 25 years to follow. Serve this wonderful dessert warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and listen to the compliments.

Filling: 1 1/4 cup of granulated sugar 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1 1/4 teaspoona of ground cinnamon 2 teaspoona of finely shredded lemon rind

Directions: 1. Pre-Heat your oven to 400 degrees. 2. Filling: Mix your sugar, flour and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add lemon rind, rhubarb and strawberries. Gently toss or mix until everything is coated. Drizzle top with vanilla extract. Pour the mixture into a greased 9 by 13 baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes. 3.Topping: Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large

bowl. Cut in the butter and mix until mixture resembles pea size. Stir in the milk until the soft dough is formed. Drop dough by the tablespoon on top of the hot rhubarb mixture. Continue baking at 400 degrees until topping is puffed and browned, for about 25 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm and top with vanilla ice cream. Refrigerate leftovers if you have any. It should serve 12 people on a diet or 6 hungry adults Enjoy!

We always have brunch at Bintliff’s whenever we are in Ogunquit. Bintliff’s is our favorite restaurant when we come to Ogunquit. We recommend it to everybody! The Mimosa’s & Bloody Mary’s are the best! The wait staff are very knowledgeable and make good suggestions, and it’s always delicious! The food portions are very generous. BUSINESS & FINANCE Student Loan Debt: Right Repayment Plan Repaying student loans is more complicated than ever before. And given that no two borrowers share the exact same incomes, life goals and family situations, it can be difficult to determine which path is best. “Borrowers have to do a lot of homework upfront to determine which program fits their needs, but there’s work at the backend, too, like incomedriven programs that require them to reapply every year, said Sarah Hamilton, student loan supervisor for Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and student loan counseling agency. “Objective advice from a credible third

party, like a nonprofit counseling agency, may be critical. Hamilton provides federal student loan borrowers a cheat sheet of common repayment programs: Standard Repayment: If you took out federal loans, you’ll automatically be enrolled in the Standard plan, which requires fixed monthly payments over 10 years. If you can afford it, it’s your best option for paying down your loans and saving on interest. Income-Based Repayment (IBR): Monthly payments are determined by your income and family size, and are capped at 10-15 percent of a borrower’s discretionary income. It’s a good option if you’re struggling with Standard payments or have high

debt relative to your income. Pay As You Earn (PAYE) & Revised Pay As You Earn: These plans offer two of the lowest monthly payment amounts of all repayment options. Payments are set at 10 percent of discretionary income and may increase or decrease each year based on income, family size, tax filing status and state of residence. Balances are forgiven after 20 or 25 years. Both options require annual recertification, which can impact the monthly payment as well. Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR): Monthly payments are calculated at 20 percent of your discretionary income or the payment amount on a 12-year fixed repayment

plan – whichever is lower. It’s easier to qualify for this program since there’s no income eligibility requirement, but ICR payments may end up being higher than the Standard plan.

Direct Consolidation: These loans combine multiple federal loans and offer a fixed inSee LOANS page 24...

~ Arts And Entertainment~ ...LIBRARY from page 22

...VINEGAR HILL from page 14 harmonica player for Boston's legendary J. Geils Band has recently partnered up with guitar and vocal sensation, Shun Ng, to create one of the most dynamic musical acts to come out of Boston in a long time. The music is soulful blues, rockin' yet thoughtful and performed by arguably two of the top musicians at their respective instruments. Since 1969, Magic Dick has toured the world playing and blowing away clubs and stadiums with the J. Geils Band. He explains the formation of the duo: "From the moment I first heard Shun Ng's CD "Funky Thumb Stuff" I knew that a manifest musical collaboration was about to happen. Shun's

sound simply made me feel very alive and induced in me a synchronous alignment of musical DNA as if it was his intention as well as mine all along! I helped it along by asking his manager, Ralph Jaccodine to introduce us at his office. A long and enlightening conversation happened on that day of our first meeting and now we are a duo and I couldn't be more delighted." Shun Ng was born in Chicago, raised in Singapore now based out of Boston. At 24 years old, he is already an international star, a soulful, world-class guitarist, vocalist, and electric performer who in a short period of time, has caught the attention of the top players

in the music world including Quincy Jones who said: "When you see Shun Ng, you won't believe your eyes nor your ears. I was simply blown away by both his soul and his science. His creativity is astounding." "In this collaboration with Magic Dick," Shun says, "we wanted to make music in a way that no one had quite done before while remaining grounded in our roots. Magic Dick brings a powerhouse attack with ferocious precision and a killer groove to this duo. I have great respect for him. To be working with a true Boston legend is a real privilege." ~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, My friend downloaded the free version of Windows 10 on my laptop that already had Windows 7 on it. How do I remove Windows 10 from my laptop? I want to keep Windows 7, as I like it better than windows 10. I do not need both of them on the same laptop. Linda Dear Linda, The short answer to your question is that you probably can't remove Windows 10 from your laptop, not easily anyway. My reason for this answer is that Microsoft only provides the abili-

ty to go back to your previous operating system for 30 days after upgrading to Windows 10, and it has been far longer than that since the free upgrade was available. It is not impossible, however. After 30 days have passed the only way to go back to your original Windows 7 is to follow the following steps. 1. Backup your files. This is very important because your computer is going to be erased during the following steps. 2. Run the recovery program that came with your computer. It is different for different types of computers. This

If not, this is something that I do here in my computer shop, and I am sure your local computer repair shop will do for you as well. If you live in the area, I would be happy to do it for you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady I've been receiving your newsletter since in the 1990's, I believe. Anyway, it's been a very long time, and you have been an immense help. I remember that you used to suggest new games that you'd tried. I'm interested in finding some of the older and simpler games and wondered if you might suggest a safe sight that I could check out. Or possibly a list of simpler games somewhere that you could recommend. I am leery of game sites in general. Thank you for any help you might be able to give me. Kay Dear Kay, Yes, I used to review games from Big Fish Games, and they are still around at: http://tinyurl. com/bfgames. They still come out with new games every day, I just haven't had time to play them lately. You can try most of the games before you buy them, and because they sell their games, you are not bombarded

with advertisements like some of those other game sites. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I'm a long time subscriber. Ran into a problem last week. Running Win10 Pro, Firefox. I accidentally struck a number of keys on lower left side of keyboard. Both monitors went black and then came back in about 30 seconds. When I try to add a new FOLDER (right click on desktop) to either monitor, the popup menu where you can "view", "sort by", "refresh", etc and where you can select "new" which normally brings up a sub-menu which allows you to select "short cut" or folder" does not bring up the sub-menu. When I select "new", I see the "waiting hourglass" and both screens go black and then reappear. No new folder. Any suggestions? TIA Bob (Oklahoma) Dear Bob, My only suggestion would be that you shut down the computer and then start it back up. Since you have been having this problem for more than a week, you have probably already done that, but some people just let their computer go to sleep when not using it, and that is not the same as shutting it down. I can't think of anything that you could have done by pressing some keyboard keys that wouldn't be resolved by shutting down the computer. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I am using Windows backup to keep my files backed up. I have found where my pictures, documents and favorites are stored, but I am not sure where the emails and contacts are kept. I am using Thunderbird, and when I asked at the store, the tech told me that Thunderbird messages can't be backed up or transferred. If this is true, I need to find a new email program, I need my messages and contacts! Thank you, Debbie Dear Debbie, Not only is it possible to backup and/or transfer your thunderbird files, it is easier than most email programs. Thunderbird saves your personal information like messages and contacts in a set of files and folders called a "Profile". All you have to do is find and backup and/or copy the profile folders and you will be backed up. Thunderbird can actually show you where your profile folders are located. Here is how to get that information: 1. Open Thunderbird. 2. Click on the menu icon (3 horizontal lines in the upper-right corner) point to "Help" and click on "Troubleshooting Information" 3. In the, "Application Basics" section, find the "Profile Folder" section and click on the "Show Folder" button. 4. This will open the folder containing all your files, and the location of that folder will be displayed in the address bar. If you want to make the backup simple, just backup the entire folder named, Users on your C: drive and you will have all the files you need. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Smaller brackets, tooth-colored options and even plastic aligners have largely replaced traditional metal braces. Braces have evolved considerably over the years. With new technologies available, plus an acknowledgment that braces are a necessity for people of various ages and not just children, patients of all ages are choosing orthodontic procedures to give themselves healthy smiles. Early braces Orthodontic treatment in some shape or form has been around since 1000 BC. Studies of exhumed Egyptian mummies found that some Egyptians were buried with

crude metal bands around their teeth, and archaeologists belive a material may have been tied to these bands to provide pressure to move the teeth. Ancient Romans and Greeks wrote about bringing newly emerging teeth into proper position by pushing them with fingers. Pierre Fauchard is considered the father of dentistry and a pioneer in the field of orthodontics. Fauchard invented the bandeau, which was a horseshoe-shaped strip of metal with regularly spaced holes to fit around teeth and

correct their alignment, states Colgate Oral Care Center. Nowadays, braces have evolved even further, with millions of people choosing from the various types of braces to correct dental problems. The American Association of Orthodontics notes that one out of five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21 — proving it’s never too late to straighten one’s teeth. Why braces? Braces were once considered a cosmetic procedure only. Dentists today recognize that correcting misaligned

teeth can prevent periodontal problems, tooth wear, dental caries, infected gums, and various forms of dental disease. Engineering feat Braces work by applying pressure to the teeth to gradually shift them and the jaw. Traditional braces consist of small brackets adhered to the teeth that are connected by a wire. Pressure is achieved by periodically using tight, thick wires. As pressure is applied to the periodontal ligament, which holds the teeth in place, the body will naturally create new room and adjust. If too much pressure is applied too soon, tooth loss may occur. New technology Braces no longer resemble the railroad style metal braces that wrapped around teeth in the early 1970s. Brackets are small and may be the color of metal or enamel. Brackets may be affixed to the front of the teeth or the back. Some people opt for

clear plastic aligners, which can be very successful in the hands of trained orthodontists. Many orthodontists use heat-activated nickel-titanium alloy wires that apply constant pressure and do not need to be tightened as frequently. Also, advanced photography and x-rays enable orthodontists to plan treatment plans more effectively. Orthodontists spend two to three years learning how to properly align teeth and jaws, says the American Association of Orthodontists. Braces treatment lasts an average of about two years, with patients visiting the orthodontist every four to six weeks for adjustments. Braces have come a long way. In a short time, anyone can have a beautiful smile to show off. This article was provided by MetroCreative. ...LOANS from page 21 terest rate based on the weighted average of the interest rates of the loans you’re consolidating, which could save you money and simplify the repayment process. However, it will also extend the repayment terms. Graduated Repayment: With this program, payments start lower and increase over time, and have a 10-year term. It’s a good option if you expect your salary to climb as you progress in your career. Though this plan isn’t usually the best option compared to income-driven programs, it might be the right fit for you – especially if you don’t want the hassle of reapplying for an income-driven plan yearly. You can also consolidate and extend the terms up to 30 years. Extended Repayment: The term of this loan design is

extended to 25 years, meaning monthly payments are lower. It’s an attractive option if you can’t afford the payments on the Standard plan – but you’ll pay more in interest over time. Public Service Loan Forgiveness: You may be eligible for this program if you work a full-time public service job with the government, military, public schools or 501(c)3 nonprofits. It can forgive any balances on federal loans after 120 qualifying payments. Nonprofit student loan counselors can help borrowers determine which repayment option fits best with their lifestyles. Health & Fitness Manage Pain with Massage Therapy Addiction to opiates is a growing problem in the United States and Canada. Pain relief therapies, such as massage therapy, can be viable alternatives to the prescription pain medicines that often serve as a gateway to illegal drugs such as heroin. Addiction to prescription painkillers is common. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that 4.7 million people in the United States are dependent on painkillers, the sale of which has increased by more than 300 percent since 1999. Retail pharmacies across Canada dispensed 19 million prescriptions for opioids in 2016, which was up slightly from 18.9 million in 2015, according to the health data company QuintilesIMS. When prescriptions to oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl run out, many people turn to heroin as a less expensive and more readily available means of pain relief. NIDA says that up to 7 percent of people who are prescribed opiate or analgesic pain killers will become addicted. To help reduce the overprescribing epidemic and keep people from becoming addicted to pain meds, people can look for other ways to alleviate pain. Massage therapy is a viable option that can work wonders to improve flexibility and offer relief from pain in different parts of the body. In addition to alleviating pain, massage therapy can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety and improve quality of life. Research indicates that massage therapy can reduce the incidence and frequency of back pain, headache and leg pain and can even reduce stress and tension. Massage therapy can be an asset to those with myalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and other conditions. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that massage therapy affects the activity of certain genes, which directly reduces inflammation in muscles — the same results that would occur if a person took pain medication. Researchers tested people who exercised and received massages afterward against a control group, discovering that “massage dampened the activity of proteins known

as inflammatory cytokines, which cause inflammation and pain. It also increased levels of proteins that signal the muscles to produce more mitochondria, the cell structures that produce energy and help muscles recover from activity. A review published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice noted that moderate pressure massage can lead to decreased cortisol levels, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Massage may help stimulate serotonin products, improving mood and feelings of well-being. Also, according to AMTA, deeper massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues while helping the lymphatic system to flush away waste products. It also eases tense and knotted muscles and stiff joints, improv-

ing mobility and flexibility. Massage therapy can be a viable alterna-

tive

for pain sufferers. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Senti-

this year’s tournament raised $13,784.50 for SMHC’s Center for Breast Care. Overall, the Biddeford-Saco Ladies Association has contributed over $74,000 to support care for breast cancer survivors in their community. “The Pink on the Links tournament is invaluable to our breast care program, said Langley. “We support close to 100 women every year in our community who are diagnosed with breast cancer. The funds from the event help these individuals directly as they enable us to provide them with quality educational materials at the time of diagnosis, during their treatment and at the time of their survivorship visit. Funds raised from the tournament also help the Center support individual sessions

with a social worker, support groups, and special speakers on topics of interest to patients. “Every other Thursday, I hear laughter down the hall from my office, Sue Hadiaris, senior vice president and chief planning officer at SMHC, shared with the crowd after a warm day on the course. “The laughter comes from survivors in the breast cancer support group that meets

at SMHC. Cancer is tough, but their positivity reminds me that together these women are strong and hopeful. Your donations and support from the community and each other make all the difference. To learn more about SMHC and SMHC providers, visit www.smhc. org, https://www.youtube. com/c/smhcorgme, or https:// twitter.com/SMHCHealth.
