$50,000 Challenge met for Children’s Hospital

Rick Dolliver, joined by wife and son, makes good on his challenge as he says goodbye to his long hair.

OGuNQuIT Rick Dolliver, owner of ‘That Place’, 331 Shore Road in Ogunquit, had not cut his hair in four long years. He pledged that if he raised at least $50,000 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, through donations from family and friends, he would agree to finally shave his hair off during a benefit event at his restaurant. With that goal in mind and through many generous donations, Rick raised a whopping $50,079! On Monday, September 22, at a pre-planned benefit event held at the restaurant at 6 p.m., the shears were in action and Rick ditched his “’80s hair” and said goodbye to his locks.

within the Middle School, which opened at the start of the school year. The new space was a faculty-driven initiative that was dreamt up last spring. Thanks to two generous donors from within the Berwick community, this idea became a reality. Through the efforts and hard work of many of the Middle School faculty members who gave their time over the summer, a room that was formerly used as a faculty lounge was transformed into a colorful, dynamic, and inspirational space for “making.” So what is a Makerspace? At Berwick, a Makerspace is a

But with the support of you, my friends and family, we raised an unbelievable $50,079 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Words cannot express how much I thank you all for the help and support I got from all of you.” Money raised through this initiative will benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, the pediatric oncology program of the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center. Last summer, when George H.W. Bush shaved his head in support of his security guard’s son who was getting treated for leukemia, I was deeply inspired. That’s why I’m raising funds for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital through my efforts. moose Season Set To Begin In maine

STaTeWIde – On September 22, over a thousand moose hunters will enter the woods, embarking on what many call the hunt of a lifetime. While this marks the first day of moose season in northern

and eastern Maine, the moose season is divided into four segments and continues throughout the fall during the weeks of October 13-18, November 3-8 and November 3-29 in southern Maine. In all, 3,095 permits were issued to hunt moose in

Maine this year. Regulated hunting seasons is how the department controls Maine’s moose population, estimated at approximately 65,000 to 70,000 animals. Maine’s moose population is a valued resource, due to the high demands

for both viewing and hunting. The number of permits issued for each moose hunting district varies depending on moose population density in the district and publicly derived populations objectives, such as managing for recreational opportunity (hunting and viewing), road safety (reducing moose-vehicle collisions) or a combination of both. “By adjusting the number and type of permits available to hunters, we can control the moose harvest and manage population growth,” said Lee Kantar, IFW’s moose biologist. “In the northern part of the state, the goal is to reduce the moose population, and in other areas, stabilize or increase the population.”

Last year, with over 4,000 permits issued, 2,971 moose hunters were successful, translating to nearly three out of every four moose hunters getting a moose. The 72 percent success rate is in stark contrast to bear or deer hunting, where success rates range historically from 18 to 25 percent. Moose hunting in Maine continues to be extremely popular, with over 53,577 hunters applying to the moose lottery for a chance to hunt moose. This year, the number of moose permits issued to hunters was decreased. The department issued 3,095 permits statewide, down from the 4,110 that were available last year. “Based upon our research, we felt this was necessary,” said Kantar. “Decreasing the amount of permits will help lessen the impact of winter tick on the state’s moose population.” In particular, the department decreased the number of antlerless only or cow permits that are available to hunters. Antlerless-only permits were decreased in wildlife management Districts 1-5, 7-9 and 12-13. and last year was a peak year. The number of moose permits were reduced to offset the impact of the high tick year. All successful moose hunters are required to register their

moose at an area tagging station. At these stations, IFW wildlife biologists collect data that provides insight into moose population health. Biologists will measure antler beam width and diameter. A tooth is removed in order to determine the age of the moose. Ticks are counted on four different areas of the moose to compare numbers to years past. In later weeks, moose hunters who shoot a female moose are required to bring the ovaries, which are examined to determine reproductive success. This biological data is combined with data from the ongoing moose radiocollar study, as well as the aerial moose population and composition surveys to give biologists a clearer picture of the health and status of Maine’s moose herd.

THYROID DISEASE IS HORRIBLE!

Why does 3PM feel like 10PM used to? Why do you wake up at 2 A.M. with a worried mind? Where did those 20+ pounds come from? Why does your doctor tell you your labs are normal?

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE THIS WAY! Come to My Free Thyroid Recovery Program Workshop

THIS THURSDAY EVENING A Personal Note from Dr. Donatello:

In the last four years, our office has helped over 600 people in New England with this illness. Many drive five or six hours round trip to us. You may have seen this ad before and have talked yourself out of coming to the talk. You rationalize things will turn around in time. But think for a second the path you have been going down. How have things worked out in the last couple of years? No so well right? Now is the time to act. You must start looking at the triggers or the NEXT 5-10 years will not be pretty. The vast majority of thyroid disease is auto-immune in origin and until you work on what triggers your problem, odds are you will continue to get worse and worse. I will show you why in this 45 minute talk but more importantly, show you what it will take to get you better.

Go to

www.donatellobbt.com

I hope to see you there this Thursday evening, Dr. Jeff Donatello, D.C., C.N.S, C.F.M.P Board Certified Chiropractic Physician Certified Nutrition Specialist Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner

And look for “thyroid solutions” for more information

Topics to be discussed:

• New advancements in the treatment of thyroid conditions. • Why you may not need medication at all! (And why the meds just might be making you worse.) • The mechanism that causes many women in this country to have weight, energy and sleep issues. • Why this mechanism is almost always ignored by your doctor. • What new lab tests are now available to identify the true cause of your thyroid problem. • The specific foods that should be avoided at all costs with thyroid disease. • Not diagnosed with thyroid disease BUT still have these symptoms? There may be answers for you also. Dr. Donatello’s protocols are based on the ground breaking work of Dr. Datis Kharrazian, author of the book, “Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms When My Lab Tests Are Normal?”

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias” said Laurie Trenholm, Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter Executive Director. “With funds raised, the Alzheimer’s Association will be able to provide much needed care and support to people affected by the disease as well as fund critically needed Alzheimer’s research.” Walk to End Alzheimer’s participants did more than complete the walk. They learned more about Alzheimer’s disease and the Association’s critical role in the fight against it, including the latest about Alzheimer’s research and current clinical trials, how they can become involved in advocacy efforts at home and in Washington, DC and the Association’s support programs and services. The event also included an emotional tribute ceremony to honor those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, tripling from today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050. Can Your Homeowners association Stop You From Posting a Security System Sign? HOA expert Richard Thompson answers your questions about living in condos, co-ops and communities with homeowners associations. Q: Does the homeowner association have the right to restrict home security system signs in the common area outside of the homes? A: The HOA usually has the right to limit signs in the common area and what is placed in home windows. Small security stickers on the window are usually allowed. The main concern is curb appeal. Uncontrolled signage creates a cluttered look and reduces property values. Q: I don’t feel the board spends money in our best interests. I protested by withholding payment until year-end. Recently, I received a notice saying if I didn’t pay, they would put a lien on my home. Can they do this? Am I wrong to protest this way? A: Withholding assessments in protest is not the way to get your point across and, yes, the board has both the right and duty to process collection on delinquencies. I assume your concerns are for the community as a whole and not for personal issues. Your points and solutions should be made in writing to the board. Whether they act on them or not is another question. If they don’t and you feel strongly that they should, I encourage you to run for election so that you can have a direct effect on the outcome. It’s every owner’s duty to serve. Q: Is it very difficult to change the governing documents? What’s the process? A: If you are thinking about amending your governing documents, you should consult with an attorney specializing in HOA law. There are state and federal laws to consider as well as practical applications that need to be harmonized. Once the amendment(s) are approved, they usually need to be recorded. The attorney can assist with this as well. Q: Should we include landscape items in our Reserve Study? How about insuring trees? A: It’s wise to include “Landscape Renovation” and “Tree Work” in the Reserve Study. All bushes and trees have a limited life. Bushes die and outgrow their location. While trees usually have a long life, they require corrective pruning that should be done every three to five years and is expensive. Hiring an arborist to do a comprehensive inventory and report on the trees also makes a lot of sense. If each tree is tagged and referenced in the report,

maintenance can be easily tracked. Consistent corrective pruning will extend the lives of the trees and keep them looking good. Insurance for non-income

producing trees provides limited coverage for claims related to fire, lightning, explosion, riot, aircraft, vehicles, vandalism and theft. Most tree claims are related to vehicle damage. Wind,

Country Girls rock: local Talent Shines at Jonathan’s OGuNQuIT On a warm summer evening, the concert hall at Jonathan’s Restaurant was filled with the sounds of “Country Girls Rock”. The event marked weeks of preparation and rehearsals for TuneTown Studios vocal instructor Jess Taylor, her students, and fellow TuneTown instructors, staff and friends. TuneTown Music Gear in Wells has held numerous summer camp programs over the past 10 years, teaching young musicians the basics of rock group dynamics, recording studio technique and vocal performance. This summer they reached out to local business owner and music lover Jonathan West, who graciously agreed to partner with them in giving the young participants a special opportunity to showcase their talents in a real concert setting. The stars of the evening were Country Girl vocalists

earned them two Best of New Hampshire Awards. They also have the distinction of being the first Gypsy jazz ensemble to appear at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival, where they received a standing ovation from the crowd, as they did at last year’s FPFC show. FPFC promoter, Brett Hartenbach, said of the group’s performance from last year, “Ameranouche had the audience from the opening number, then proceeded to blow the room away. From Django classics to musette waltzes to hot, swinging original tunes, [they] earned every ounce of the rousing standing ovation that they received at the end of the night.” Whatever variation of jazz they choose to play, ‘Ameranouche’s’ music is rhythmic, vigorous, and elegant. If you’ve never experienced hot acoustic swing music, this is your chance to hear the joyful, uplifting, and dance-inducing sounds of Gypsy jazz. In the words of Liz Buck-

Protect Your Retirement against Market Volatility As an investor, you’re well aware that, over the short term, the financial markets always move up and down. During your working years, you may feel that you have time to overcome this volatility. And you’d be basing these feelings on actual evidence: the longer the investment period, the greater the tendency of the markets to “smooth out” their performance. But what happens when you retire? Won’t you be more susceptible to market movements? You may not be as vulnerable as you might think. In the first place, given our growing awareness of healthier lifestyles, you could easily spend two, or even three, decades in retirement — so your investment time frame isn’t necessarily going to be that compressed. Nonetheless, it’s still true that time may well be a more important consideration to you

during your retirement years, so you may want to be particularly vigilant about taking steps to help smooth out the effects of market volatility. Toward that end, here are a few suggestions: • Allocate your investments among a variety of asset classes. Of course, proper asset allocation is a good investment move at any age, but when you’re retired, you want to be especially careful that you don’t “over-concentrate” your investment dollars among just a few assets. Spreading your money among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, government securities and so on —can help you avoid taking the full brunt of a downturn that may primarily hit just one type of investment. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t assure a profit or protect against loss.) • Choose investments that have demonstrated solid performance across many market

cycles. As you’ve probably heard, “past performance is no guarantee of future results,” and this is true. Nonetheless, you can help improve your outlook by owning quality investments. So when investing n stocks, choose those that have actual earnings and a track record of earnings growth. If you invest in fixed-income vehicles, pick those that are considered “investment grade.” • Don’t make emotional decisions. At various times during your retirement, you will, in all likelihood, witness some sharp drops in the market. Try to avoid overreacting to these downturns, which will probably just be normal market “corrections.” If you can keep your emotions out of investing, you will be less likely to make moves such as selling quality investments merely because their price is temporarily down. • Don’t try to “time” the market. You may be tempted to “take advantage” of volatility by looking for opportunities to “buy low and sell high.” In theory, this is a fine idea — but, unfortunately, no one can really predict market highs or lows. You’ll probably be better off by consistently investing the same amount of money into the same investments. Over time, this method of investing may result in lower per-share costs. However, as is the case with diversification, this type of “system-

atic” investing won’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, and you’ll need to be willing to keep investing when share prices are declining. It’s probably natural to get somewhat more apprehensive about market volatility during your retirement years. But taking the steps described above

How to escape The un/ under-employment Trap There’s good news for jobs in the United States. • Early this summer, the private sector added 288,000 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. • The unemployment rate has shrunk to 6.1 percent, the lowest since September 2008, when the Great Recession was just starting. The rate has dropped nearly 2 percent since the beginning of 2013. • The U.S. Payroll to Population employment rate (P2P), as tracked by Gallup, now stands at one of its highest points since tracking began in January 2010. • More companies, states and cities are either raising their minimum wage or considering it.

Does this mean that we can put our minds to rest regarding jobs and prosperity? Not exactly, says Richard B. Alman, principal and chief career/employment strategist of Recruiter Media, owner of www.RecruiterNetworks. com, the world’s largest owner/operator of career websites. “It’s great that reports show improvement, but the good news comes with an asterisk; we need to keep in mind the term that has become so common since 2009 – the ‘new normal,’ which, in part, refers to a lower expectation for prosperity,” says Alman, who has managed human resources for Fortune 100 and smaller multi-national companies. “Raising the minimum wage, for example, is a step in the right direction for many, but it’s certainly not happening everywhere and it doesn’t guarantee a living wage. California raised its minimum to $9 per hour, but that’s a state with a very high cost of living.” What is the quality of these new jobs, and how many hours do they offer? What about the Catch 22 ensnaring the long-term unemployed, who can’t get work because they don’t have jobs? And where’s the hope for the recent college graduates who are deeply in debt and can’t find the jobs they’ve prepared for? Alman has a blueprint that can help would-be employees in these tough positions. • One word: volunteer. “This is, by far, the best advice I can offer if you feel like you’ve tried everything and it hasn’t worked,” he says. Volunteering can pay very high dividends for anyone who is unemployed, under-employed See TRAP page 17...

...TRAP from page 16 or simply looking for a new career trajectory. It helps current and future employees of any age. “You may not see the payoff right away, but volunteering has many long-term benefits,” he says. • Volunteer in positions that will build your resume´. “When you volunteer, you can update your skills and resume´, which shows potential employers that you’re not lazy,” Alman says. “Ask for jobs that use the career skills you have. For instance, if you have a background or degree in marketing, look for opportunities to volunteer in marketing for a non-profit.” For those with stretches of long-term unemployment on their resume´, volunteering is the best way to show future employers that you value staying active and building new skills. And, if you’re a lowwage worker at a fast-food restaurant, for example, you can have a whole new headspace in which to consider your future. • Work on developing leads. “You can be just like everyone else who’s desperate for a decent job or you can be proactive and build professional relationships, which do

more than resume´s to earn interviews and employment,” he says. The non-profit sector attracts people who are passionate about a cause, a wide range of associated professionals and, frequently, people who are in high income brackets. • Where can folks go to volunteer? A half-hour of research online can yield viable options for legit non-profit organizations. Other great sources are hospitals, which tend to work closely with non-profit organizations. Hospitals also involve a wide variety of professionals. “Once again, if you work well and develop great working relationships with others, you open yourself up to a whole network of possibilities,” he says. “Who you know can make the difference.” Submitted by Richard B. YOrK Molda Chiropractic is celebrating 10 years in business this September. “It’s been very gratifying coming back home and helping this community for the past 10 years,” says owner Dr. Chris Molda. “We’ve been able to help hundreds, if not thousands, of people over this past decade and we are more excited now than ever.” The practice has recently acquired an Erchonia laser – an FDA-approved low level laser that combats both chronic and acute pain using the power of light. In contrast to the highpower, high-heat lasers that are used in various surgical procedures, Erchonia lasers produce a low-level, or cold, output that has no thermal effect on the body’s tissue. Instead, the laser serves to stimulate biological function similar to photosynthe-

In the U.S., some 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease annually. Thousands also suffer from babesiosis and anaplasmosis, tickborne ailments that can occur alone or as co-infections with Lyme disease. According to a new paper published in PLOS ONE, when small, fast-living mammals abound, so too does our risk of getting sick. In eastern and central North America, blacklegged ticks are the primary vectors for Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis. The pathogens that cause these illnesses are widespread in nature; ticks acquire them when they feed on infected animals. Richard S. Ostfeld, the paper’s lead author and a scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, has researched the ecology of Lyme disease since 1992. “A pattern emerged in our long-term studies. Ticks that fed on certain rodents and shrews were much more likely to pick up multiple pathogens, making the environment riskier for people.” To investigate why mammals differ in their ‘reservoir competence’ or ability to transSee TICKS page 20...

sis, and anaplasmosis. Attributes like body size, litter size, and life span were taken into consideration. Then they looked at the role of mammal population density. As ‘sit and wait’ parasites, ticks are much more likely to encounter animals with dense populations. This, in turn, could help pathogens evolve to exploit specific hosts, resulting in more effective transmission rates. For Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, fast life history features were a strong predictor of an animal’s ability to transmit infection to ticks. Body size was inversely related to reservoir competence. Raccoon, skunk, opossum, squirrel, and deer infected fewer ticks than their mouse, chipmunk, and shrew counterparts. Ostfeld notes, “This is consistent with past research on Lyme disease, West Nile

virus, and Eastern Equine encephalitis. There is evidence that animals that mature early and have frequent, large litters invest less in some immune defenses, making them better pathogen hosts.” Population density was the best predictor of species’ abilities to transmit all three pathogen groups, with animals that ticks encountered most frequently being the most effective at transferring infection. Co-author Felicia Keesing of Bard College explains, “Fast life history and high population density often go hand-inhand. In rodents and shrews, pathogen adaptation and poor immune defense may be working together to amplify disease spread.” With Ostfeld concluding, “In our struggle to manage the ever-growing list of tick-borne diseases, we need to understand which animals magnify human disease risk. Our results suggest when generalist pathogens emerge, small mammals with large populations and a fast pace of life warrant careful monitoring.” Research and analyses were made possible through grants from the National Science Foundation’s Divisions of Environmental Biology and Emerging Frontiers. Health & Fitness Foods To Supplement Men’s Workouts Diet and exercise go handin-hand for adults looking to reduce their risk for heart disease and cancer. A great workout routine is made even better by a healthy diet, and a healthy diet is even more effective when paired with an active lifestyle. While that’s certainly not revelatory, men and women might be surprised to learn they have different nutritional needs, so a diet that might satisfy women’s needs will not necessarily do the same for men. When tailoring their diets, men should be sure to include nutrients that prevent prostate cancer and help them maintain muscle mass. The right nutrients also can help men boost their immune systems, prevent bone loss and strengthen their cardiovascular systems. While many foods provide nutritional benefits to both men and women, the following are some foods that can be especially beneficial to men. Bananas Rich in potassium, bananas can aid in protein metabolism, boost the immune system, help with the formation of red blood cells and help the nervous system operate at optimal capacity. Bananas are a great source of vitamin B-6, and because they’re so easily portable, bananas make a great midday snack or preworkout bite to eat on your way to the gym. In addition to providing ample potassium, bananas also are rich in magnesium, and

diets rich in both potassium and magnesium can reduce a person’s risk of stroke. Though women suffer more strokes each year than men, the National Stroke Association notes that is likely because women live longer than men and stroke typically occurs at older ages. Stroke incidence is higher in men than women at younger ages, so men, especially those with a family history of stroke, should include bananas in their diet.

Oysters are widely considered a delicacy, but few may know that oysters also make for

a healthy addition to a nutritious diet. That’s because just a few oysters per day can deliver the recommended daily intake of zinc, a powerful antioxidant that research has shown can pro-

Broccoli also may help men Affiliated with Frisbie Memorial Hospital and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital lower their levels of homocysteine, an amino acid linked to an increased risk of stroke. Soybeans Soybeans can be an integral part of a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and such diets can help men reduce their risk of heart disease. In addition, soybeans contain a substantial amount of isoflavones, which promote a healthy prostate and lower men’s risk of prostate cancer. Men should consider soy products such as soy nuts, soy milk and soy cheese to increase the nutritional value of their diets.

Strength Training Tips For Women Many women might be surprised to know that strength training can be just as beneficial to the fairer sex as it can be to men. But according to the National Center for Health Statistics, only one in every five women include strength training in their weekly workout routines, a disconcerting figure that could be making it more difficult for women to maintain a healthy weight and protect themselves against potentially debilitating conditions such as osteoporosis. So why are so many women avoiding the weights in favor of the cardiovascular machines? Though the answer to that question remains a mys-

tery, it’s fair to speculate that many women are hesitant to lift weights out of a fear that they will bulk up and appear muscular. Such a fear is largely unfounded, as the Women’s Heart Foundation notes that the average woman’s estrogen levels are so high that it’s difficult for her to become overly muscular. In fact, women who lift weights tend to benefit without adding the bulk by building muscle that is firm and tone, a look that’s both healthy and vastly different from that developed by men who strength train. In addition to producing toned muscles, strength training can help women to control their weight, as strength training reduces body fat and burns calo-

ries more efficiently. Muscle built during strength training also reduces a woman’s risk of injury by improving her balance and coordination. Strength training also benefits a woman’s bones. As women age, their bone density decreases thanks to hormonal changes. That decrease in bone density puts women at risk of injury should they fall and also increases their risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become brittle and fragile due to a loss of tissue. But strength training slows that deterioration, helping bones maintain their strength longer. While strength training pays numerous dividends for women, that’s only the case if training is done correctly. The fol-

lowing are a few tips for women about to begin a strength training regimen. don’t go it alone. Beginners, both male and female, should always enlist some help when starting a strength training regimen. Many fitness centers offer one or two free personal training sessions to new members, and women should take advantage of such offers to learn how to use certain machines and the proper form for the various strength training exercises they intend to include in their routines. If a facility does not offer the sessions free, consider hiring a personal trainer for a few sessions until you are comfortable with each exercise and confident your form is correct. Proper form prevents injury and promotes long-term health. Keep it simple. Part of the difficulty with beginning a strength training regimen rests with the abundance of advice out there, whether “out there” is in your own gym or online. But simplicity is good when beginning a strength training regimen. Learn some basic exercises for each muscle group at first. Once you are comfortable with these basic exercises, and it might take several months to feel comfortable, you can then look to master additional exercises and create a more specialized strength training routine. Speak with a professional trainer at your gym to develop a good beginner’s routine and then expand on that routine later. don’t abandon cardiovascular exercise. Strength training should not be introduced at the expense of cardiovascular exercise. An adequate exercise regimen includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise, which improves heart health (remember, the heart is a muscle, too), helps to boost metabolism and improves recovery time, among other benefits. As you grow more accustomed to your workout routine, increase the intensity of your cardiovascular workout and not the volume. don’t be discouraged. It’s easy to feel discouraged when beginning a strength train-

ing regimen, as results don’t come overnight, leaving some to question if they will ever get stronger and reap the rewards of their efforts. Significant cosmetic results such as finely toned muscles and considerable weight loss won’t be immediate, but if you stick to your routine, you will likely begin to notice your energy levels are improving and you feel better, and those kinds of results often come sooner rather than later. Use such encouraging developments as motivation if necessary and always keep in mind that strength training will pay off in the long run. Many women avoid strength training out of fear that will develop large muscles that compromise their femininity. But such fears are unfounded, and strength training is a great way for women to get in shape and foster long-term health. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Whole grains Whole grains are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, which can help men improve heart health, build muscle and maintain a healthy weight. Whole grains that are rich in soluble fiber, such as oatmeal, are strong sources of B vitamins that help men lower their low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. Whole grain products that contain at least three to five grams of fiber per serving can pack a powerful punch for men looking to improve the nutritional value of their diets. Men and women benefit differently from various nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and men might be surprised to learn just how healthy certain easily prepared foods can be. ~ News ~ deacon Normand of the Parish of the ascension of the lord Named 2014 deacon of the Year YOrK COuNTY Monsignor Charles Murphy, director of the diaconate for the Diocese of Portland, is pleased to announce that Deacon Roger Normand has been named the 2014 Deacon of the Year for the diocese. Since his ordination to the permanent diaconate on June 6, 2004, Deacon Normand has served in the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord (St. Raphael Church, Kittery; Our Lady of the Angels Church, South Berwick; St. Christopher Church, York; Star of the Sea Church, York Beach). A permanent deacon is an ordained minister of the Catholic

Ralph H. Berry, 79 NORTH BERWICK – Ralph H. Berry age 79, of Lebanon Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at his home with his wife by his side. He was born in Kittery, Maine September 3, 1935, the son of Ernest and Ruth (Gerry) Berry. He was a 1953 graduate of Robert W. Traip Academy in Kittery and served in the U.S. Army. After the Army, he married his sweetheart, Ann Williams; celebrating 50 years of marriage in June. Ralph was handy in several trades. He enjoyed tinkering on cars, flying model airplanes and even earned his pilot’s license. Ann recalls their first date when Ralph took her flying and demonstrated a “stall”. He loved the thrill and freedom flying gave him. Ralph’s biggest accomplishment with his hands was completed in 1980 when he, his sons, father and father-in-law built a new log home for their family in North Berwick. His boys recall the countless hours of building it with no power tools at all, just the old fashioned way of assembly. Ralph took great pride in his home. He had worked several places over the years, including Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and Gunnison’s Machine Shop. His greatest joy was when he

His ministry has been characterized with one-on-one engagement in the model of ministry preached by Pope Francis,” said Monsignor Murphy when presenting Deacon Normand with his award at the annual deacon assembly in September. “Your pastoral visits

manent homes for them. Sadly, the majority of calls are from the public who can no longer keep their pets for various reasons, like the lovely kitty in the photo. There’s great emotional pressure on our team to try and rescue as many as we can. Unfortunately, our adoption center is full. So are our foster homes. So we urge the public to please be proactive. Try to find a home for pets you can no longer keep. The best gift you can give your pet, aside from keeping them, is finding a new loving home for them. Please ask your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to help. Every ‘owned’ cat we bring in takes the place of a homeless cat in harm’s way. Please help us save them. Be proactive. Volunteer to foster. Adopt one of our shelter cats. Donate food and/or money to help us continue our no-kill mission. Volunteer your time to help us feed and care for them all. It’s lots of work, but your act of love will be rewarded a thousand times over! Safe Haven needs volunteers with construction skills. Rex Lambert is assembling a team to renovate our new building and needs volunteer carpenters, sheet-rock installers, plumbers, electricians, landscapers and painters. Please call him at 207-252-4380 or Judy at 207-3638181. Help Safe Haven pay for our new building and the extensive renovations needed. Please donate generously to our capital fund. Tipper was injured outside when someone was shooting at them with a BB gun. Two-yearold Marshall is very outgoing and loves to be held. One-year-old Tipper is a bit shy; however he loves to sit in his foster mother’s lap for a good loving petting session. The preference is to adopt them out together as they clearly are bonded. Calm dogs that don’t chase cats would be okay with these two. No young children as having come from an outdoor life, they are constantly on high alert and scare easily. They are neutered and up to date on their vaccinations. For more information, please call or text foster home, Kathy, at 207-251-1789. We are in desperate need of canned and dry cat and kitten foods. With so many mouths to feed and the cost of pet foods rising, we ask graciously for your help! Day of Caring Volunteers at Waban SANFORD/no. berwick Earlier this summer, caring individuals from all over Southern Maine gathered at Waban residences and programs for United Way’s Day of Caring. The drizzly weather didn’t dampen the sunny attitudes of over 120 volunteers from businesses, schools and organizations, and from the community who volunteered their time and efforts for the United Way Day of Caring. A tremendous amount of work was done at Waban locations all over Sanford, Springvale, North Berwick and Kennebunk. Generous companies sent volunteers to weed and mulch landscaping, plant flowers, clean camp cottages and insulate in the Commons renovation for the TREE Center. With help from hard-working individuals, program locations got a Spring landscaping facelift, a new coat of paint, a fresh cleanup for summer recreation or another step closer to the grand opening of the new Experiential Education Center. The new Experiential Education Center, previously known as the Commons, will serve as a 4-season hub for the TREE

Program for Teambuilding, Recreation and Environmental Education. It will house the meeting and lab space for Environmental Education, rental space for recreational equipment, the “Commons Café” and staff offices, as well as display areas for program activities. The center will be ready for use this summer and a grand opening is planned for the Fall when all construction is finished. The staff at Waban looks forward to the Day of Caring each year and has come to depend on the unswerving dedication of the companies and individuals that show up year after year in support of Waban on the Day of Caring. “This is a day that we have a chance to work side-by-side with the public and share with them the incredible work that goes on at Waban every day. I’m touched that volunteers are actually grateful to be a part of such meaningful work. It gives us new energy,” said Selena Brock, Waban spokesperson. Many thanks to the volunteers from Sanford Alternative School, Sanford High School, Sanford National Honor So-

ciety, Gorham Savings Bank, Sanford Institution for Savings, Kennebunk Savings, UNUM, Pratt & Whitney, Damage Control, Southern Maine Garden Club, Riverridge, and Cri-Sil. All teams took a well-deserved lunch break, either at the location where they were volunteering or at the Wormwood Center, for those working closer to the main campus off Rt. 4 in Sanford. Nearly 100 people gathered in the banquet room and were served a lunch of watermelon, sandwiches, chips, cookies and beverages. Executive Director Neal Meltzer took the opportunity to thank the group. “Today, across all of the programs at Waban, there are over 120 volunteers, just like each of you, who are giving of their time. Through your collective efforts, buildings will get painted, gardens will be planted, flower beds will be mulched, many routine maintenance tasks will be completed, and thousands of dollars will be saved. It is these types of community partnerships that enable us to channel our resources to services and have the dedicated staff at Waban focus on their day-to-day

...PASTOR from page 27 Abisi was a businessman and entrepreneur in places as diverse as NYC and northern, rural Maine. He founded and operated a number of art, and craft related enterprises. Rev. Abisi has been married to his wife, Renee, for sixteen years. The couple met at the

United Methodist Church Camp, Mechuwana of Winthrop, and were married a year to the day later. During his twelve years in NYC, their daughter, Jessica, was born and now lives in Biddeford, working as a paramedic in both Boston and So. Berwick. Jessica has also served as a Ken-

nebunkport EMT. Upon returning to Maine in February, Rev. Abisi and his wife immediately set about opening a gift gallery and picture framing shop in Kennebunk Lower Village, called Morph Gallery and Emporium. It opened its doors at 155 Port Road on May 3.

WOCSD Adds Interactive Photo Feature To Website WELLS – According to Wells-Ogunquit CSD Technology Director Michael Richards, the WellsOgunquit Community School District (WOCSD) now features a way where the District can post digital photos and accompanying written commentary about events happening within the District using the social media service Instagram. People can track the account through Instagram from most mobile phone devices with a camera or home computer with a connection to the Internet. Richards’ hope is that the new photo sharing feature will motivate many to like, follow, share and utilize the District’s social media pages like Facebook and Instagram. “We look forward to being able to showcase great events in

a mobile fashion as people have lots of great things going on in the District,” said Richards. “We’re just trying to capture them and be able to share them.” For legal reasons concerning student privacy, snapshots of students in classrooms or other educational settings within the District’s schools would not be allowed unless parental permission to post such photos is granted in writing to the particular school that that student is attending. Richards stressed that only those 13 years or older can have an Instagram or Facebook account. To see photos posted thus far please visit the WOCSD site, k12wocsd.net, and click on the blue “view on Instagram” button on the bottom of the home page or go to instagram.com/wocsd.

BA Girls’ Field Hockey Win Over Winsor SOuTH BerWICK –

Berwick Academy field hockey team came away with a big league win over Winsor 1-0 recently. The Bulldogs came out strong and hungry, creating many chances early in the game, but it wasn’t until the 32nd minute that they got on the board. Sahana Heiderscheidt of Lee, N.H., hit a great ball to Kenza Farid of Hampton, N.H., down the right flank that crossed the ball to Caroline Hernon of Hampton who scored her first goal of the season and the eventual game winner. With only a minute remaining in the half, the Bulldogs almost doubled their lead when Julia Schaepe played the ball to Brooke Downey of Eliot who hit a beautiful cross just over the head of Aimee Briand of Barrington, N.H., but

Emily Borkowski of Wells made the back post run and drove the ball back across the box to Brooke Downey whose shot went just over the bar. Berwick had a solid second half creating good opportunities but was not able to get on the board. Winsor rallied with a few dangerous counterattacks and header that went just wide of the goal, but goalkeeper Sam Montagano had it covered and earned her second shutout of the season. The Bulldogs are now 3-1-0 and faced Kents Hill Tuesday at the University of New England in Biddeford. Earlier Berwick beat Brewster Academy of Wolfeboro, N.H., 1-0 in overtime.

SOuTH BerWICK –

Berwick Academy’s boys’ soccer team proved to be a generous guest recently, spotting the Bancroft side a comfortable four-goal advantage before settling down in the second half in a 4-1 loss. Two minutes after the opening kick the Berwick backfield put Bancroft’s Sheel Steuber on the penalty dot and the strong senior back converted. The goals came in rapid succession during the next 36 minutes, with Mike Lyons, Jose Garci-

Berwick Academy and Bancroft School met on the soccer field recently and it was Berwick that came away with the 4-0 victory. Berwick came out strong in its first Easterm Independent League game. It opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Julia Schaepe blasted a shot into the net. In the 22nd minute Kelly Burke of North Hampton, N.H., collected the ball at the top of the 18, beat her defender and scored off a pass from Caroline Hernon of Hampton, N.H. Just a minute later Caroline Hernon found Kat Reid of Dover, N.H., whose shot was about to be saved by the keeper and Schaepe put it in for her second goal. In the 30th minute Schaepe struck again bringing the lead to 4-0 going into the second half, finishing the day with the hat trick. In the 47th minute Bancroft earned a free kick just outside the area and hit a nice shot to make it 4-1. In the 59th minute Brooke Downey played the ball to Siobhan McDermott who played an amazing through ball to Emma Brin. In the 65th minute Laura Hoy of York broke through the defense and got her first career goal for the varsity team. Berwick held a 15-4 advantage in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corners. Sam Montagano had four saves in net for Berwick.

Marshwood Girls’ Field Hockey Shut Out Bonny Eagle

Chope, and David Turley all getting into the act before the half ended. Berwick’s boys were more composed as play resumed. Passes began to find teammates, pressure on Bancroft produced turnovers, and the general level of play was heightened. Berwick finally netted one when Brendan Tribastone controlled a bouncing ball in the scrum following a corner and slid it across to Captain Will Grant for the tap in. Stronger play in the second half has emerged as the common theme early in the season for the Bulldogs. Bringing that energy and focus to bear earlier will be key as the squad enters a challenging stretch of games over the next week, starting with a tilt against the Dexter School on the Berwick turf. Berwick also lost a contest to Lexington Christian Academy. The opening half was a tame affair, featuring lethargic play and no sustained possession by either side. Berwick may have held a slight edge in opportunities, but neither goalie was tested during the first forty minutes. The first six minutes of the second were quite different. The Lions came out of the intermission with more energy and effort and were rewarded almost immediately when Dara Faleye volleyed a low drive inside the near post off a feed from Reuben Duttweiler in the 42nd minute. Four minutes later the speedy LCA striker raced after a long, bouncing ball and headed over Berwick keeper Ian Randle on a challenge at the top of the area to double the Lions’ lead. Under duress, the Bulldogs began to play with more urgency, carrying play into the LCA zone repeatedly only to come away empty. Thomas Munch, fronted by a solid back line, kept Berwick at bay until the final seconds. Striker Derek Muse put a nice ball in front of Marshall White just at the six and White put the Bulldogs on the board to avert the shutout.

SOuTH BerWICK –

The Marshwood High School field hockey team lifted its record to 5-1 for the season recently with a 5-0 shutout of Bonny Eagle High School. Five players scored to lead Marshwood to the victory. Mikaya Willey assisted by Lindsey Poirier, Cassie MacPherson, Hannah Costin from Elaine Bachelder, Jessica Kimball assisted by Costin, and last goal by Claudia Folger assisted by Costin. Cassidy Smith had two saves in the shutout. Marshwood also shut out Biddeford 2-0. Poirier scored two goals to lead the Hawks over Biddeford. Costin had one assist. Emily Kahler and Mikayla Willey played well for the Hawks.

Marshwood Boys’ Soccer Boast Wins SOuTH BerWICK –

The Marshwood High School boys’ soccer team pushed its record to 4-3 this week with three victories in Western Maine Class A action. The Hawks defeated Westbrook 4-1, blanked Bonny Eagle 6-0, and outscored Massabesic 4-1. Gus Leisentritt led the offense against Westbrook with a pair of goals. Adding singletons were Evob Bosse and Riley Dinsimore-Patch. Sam Leathe had six saves in the Marshwood net. Dinsmore-Patch and Bosse each had two goals in the Bonny Eagle game. Logan Smith and Henry Herbold each contributed two assists to the scoring. Leathe made five saves for the shutout. In the Massabesic game goals from Hanssen Casey, Logan Smith,

Marshwood’s Syndey Jackman, assisted by Reagan Nichols, and Marin Smith, assisted by Nichols, scored the Hawks’ two goals. Marshwood also notched a 3-2 victory over Scarborough. Meagan McLean scored two goals and Sydney Jackman had one in the contest.

The Marshwood High School golf team posted a pair of victories this week, downing Kennebunk 12.5.5 and ousting Biddeford 8-5. The Hawks had a combined score of 215 to outscore Kennebunk. Mark Richardson, Jack Roberts, and Noah Jule shared low medalist honors with their 42s. Tucker Etro’s 44, Baili Lontinekearson’s 45 and Chad Gregor’s 47 proved helpful in the win, playing in a strong wind. The victory was the sixth in a row for Marshwood. Marshwood was fortunate to take home a win against Biddeford, according to Coach Mike Corriveau, as the Hawks did not play up to the level it should have been. It was good enough to remain undefeated in the first half of the season. Roberts’s 44 was the low round of the day which earned him a medal. Lontine-Kearson played junior varsity and shot a career best 41. Abby Corriveau’s 54, Ben Kahler”s 56 and Andrew Holsclaw’s 48 were the remaining junior varsity players.
