$50,000 Challenge met for Children’s Hospital
Rick Dolliver, joined by wife and son, makes good on his challenge as he says goodbye to his long hair.
OGuNQuIT Rick Dolliver, owner of ‘That Place’, 331 Shore Road in Ogunquit, had not cut his hair in four long years. He pledged that if he raised at least $50,000 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, through donations from family and friends, he would agree to finally shave his hair off during a benefit event at his restaurant. With that goal in mind and through many generous donations, Rick raised a whopping $50,079! On Monday, September 22, at a pre-planned benefit event held at the restaurant at 6 p.m., the shears were in action and Rick ditched his “’80s hair” and said goodbye to his locks.

within the Middle School, which opened at the start of the school year. The new space was a faculty-driven initiative that was dreamt up last spring. Thanks to two generous donors from within the Berwick community, this idea became a reality. Through the efforts and hard work of many of the Middle School faculty members who gave their time over the summer, a room that was formerly used as a faculty lounge was transformed into a colorful, dynamic, and inspirational space for “making.” So what is a Makerspace? At Berwick, a Makerspace is a

met – and then some. He stated on his facebook page “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that we could get where we finished. I set, what some had said, an unachievable goal. But with the support of you, my friends and family, we raised an unbelievable $50,079 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Words cannot express how much I thank you all for the help and support I got from all of you.” Money raised through this initiative will benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, the pediatric oncology program of the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center. With resources like 3D printers, 3D scanners, sewing machines, kits related to circuitry, robotics, e-textiles, and programming, as well as materials and tools that will allow for various types of construction and fabrication, the opportunities for creativity are endless. According to the Makerspace mission, “The objective of the Makerspace at Berwick Academy is to strengthen a mindset and culture of creativity, collaboration, trust, resil-

Before reaching his goal, many had asked Rick where he got the idea to cut his hair. “People kept asking me, ‘what will it take for you to cut your hair?’” he said. “Well, I decided that I wanted to make this into something that would help others. Last summer, when George H.W. Bush shaved his head in support of his security guard’s son who was getting treated for leukemia, I was deeply inspired. That’s why I’m raising funds for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital through my efforts. Please help me reach my goal of raising $50,000 for kids with cancer in Maine.” Rick’s goal was certainly

YOrK Start planning now and help celebrate fall and the York Village Marketfest by entering the 4th Annual Scarecrow Contest held on October 11. Scarecrows are fun and very much a part of the beautiful Autumn season in Maine. They are delightful to behold! Now we can enjoy scarecrows made by children families, schools, businesses, clubs and organizations displayed throughout York Village for the week prior to Marketfest which is on October 17-18. There will be prizes, of course! The three categories are: Most Traditional, Funniest, and Most Original Scarecrow. Winners will each receive $100 for each category, which has been donated for this purpose, by the York Village Association. Brochures are available throughout the Village that will provide complete details and helpful hints. For additional help contact Sue Little at 207-363-7527 and/or Jean Scott 207-3637755.
