York Middle School First in Maine to be “Plugged In” By Brittany Davenport Contributing Writer YORK – On September 13, York Middle School (YMS) went down in history as the first school in southern Maine to be partially powered by solar panel energy. The “Plugging in” ceremony commemorated the start up of the 40 solar panels on the south facing rooftops. All groups and people who helped play a part in this vision were in attendance at the ceremony, including Senator Angus King, an avid supporter of clean and renewable energy for Maine. Representa-

tives from Efficiency Maine, Revision Energy and Maine Learning Technology Initia-
tive (MLTI), were also in attendance. Speeches were given by Principal Williams, Senator
King, and Eric Hopkins, chairman of the York Energy Efficiency Committee. The ceremony was dedicated to the late Cynthia Raymond, the co-founder of the York Goes Green Group. “She’s always been a mentor and inspiration to me,” said Hopkins. The week of the ceremony also marked Raymond’s 100-birthday celebration. “Her motto was to not complain, but to do something about it,” he added. The idea for solar panels on the roof of the middle school started in 2006, when Raymond and Hopkins wanted to put solar panels on the York li-
brary. “The cost of solar power energy was over $100,000 then, compared to $23,000 now,” said Hopkins. Throughout the years, Hopkins got together with volunteers interested in renewable energy for York County. The York Town Energy Efficiency Steering Committee and the York Goes Green Group measured and crated a baseline for energy performance. “I had vision and determination but there are so many people who donated their time and expertise, I was just so very grateful,” See SOLAR page 7...
Channel 13 Holds Pep Rally and Broadcasts from Wells High School WELLS – The roof rafters in Wells High School’s Ronco Gymnasium were being strained, perhaps raised just a little, beginning at 5 am on September 13 as the entire WHS student body was invited to show up dressed in their school colors of red, white and black to participate

in WGME Channel 13’s School Spirit Challenge. From 5 a.m. till 7 a.m., students in the bleachers and all of the fall athletic teams, including the WHS Band readily accepted Channel 13 news anchor Jeff Peterson’s challenges to display some “spirited” team spirit and show how much they liked their school for an early morning television audience. News anchorman Peterson was at Wells High School with a television crew to do a live remote broadcast every 15 minutes from the school as part of Channel 13’s School Spirit Challenge during Daybreak this fall.
But there is more to the School Spirit Challenge than coming together and “firing up the troops” to root for their home team on live television. According to WGME’s website, “The program is designed to promote the community and good stewardship with students of high schools in Central and Southern Maine through an ongoing food drive to benefit the Good Shepherd Food Bank.” So, before WHS students came to the rally on Friday the 13th, they were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the gym for donation. THYROID DISEASE IS HORRIBLE! Why does 3PM feel like 10PM used to? Why do you wake up at 2 A.M. with a worried mind? Where did those 30+ pounds come from? Why does your doctor tell you your labs are normal?
YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE THIS WAY! Come to My Free Thyroid Recovery Program Workshop
THIS WEDNESDAY EVENING I have a personal connection to Thyroid Disease as my wife suffered with Hashimotos Thyroiditis for many years. Notice how I said “suffered” as in “the past.” She still has thyroid disease but no longer has all the symptoms listed above. In fact, following my thyroid protocols, she just qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Once I saw the incredible results in her, I knew I could help others. I am now known in the Northeast for getting people’s lives back on track when they have thyroid issues. In the last 4 years, we have helped over 500 people in New England with this illness. Many drive five or six hours round trip to see us.
You may have seen this ad before and have talked yourself out of coming to the talk. You rationalize things will turn around in time. But think for a second about the path you have been going down. How have things worked out in the last couple of years? Not so well right? Now is the time to act. You must start looking at the triggers or the NEXT 5-10 years will not be pretty. The vast majority of thyroid disease is auto-immune in origin and until you work on what triggers your problem, you will continue to get worse and worse. I will show you why in this 45-minute talk, but more importantly, I will show you what it will take to get you better. I hope to see you there on this Wednesday evening! Dr. Jeff Donatello, D.C., C.N.S., C.F.M.P. Board Certified Chiropractic Physician, Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner
Topics to be discussed:
To See My Thyroid Video Go To www.donatellobbt.com
• New Advancements In The Treatment Of Thyroid Conditions. • Why You May Not Need Medication At All! (and why the meds just might be making you worse.) • The mechanism that causes many women in this country to have weight, energy and sleep issues. • Why this mechanism is almost always ignored by your doctor. • What new lab tests are now available to identify the true cause of your thyroid problem..... • The specific foods that should be avoided at all costs with thyroid disease..... • Not diagnosed with thyroid disease BUT still have these symptoms? There may be answers for you also. Dr. Donatello’s protocols are based on the ground breaking work of Dr. Datis Kharrazian, author of the book, “Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? When My Lab Tests Are Normal”

The company offered $200,000 in the grant pool for anyone in Maine. Hopkins worked closely with Zack Harding, the facilities manager of YMS, to write a proposal for the grant money. “By having a plugging in ceremony, showing a connection to green energy and how we can educate the community, these factors won us the grant,” said Hopkins. The grant amount of $23,000, covered 80 percent of the cost for the solar panels and the last 10 percent was covered by donations and fundraising. Principal David Williams was also an important attribute to gaining the support of the community. “He was welcoming and willing to work with us even though it was his first school year,” said Hopkins. By comparing the MLTI program at YMS to the cost and energy effectiveness of the
solar panels, the school board was happy to help. The panels generate about 13,000 kilowatt/ hours of electricity per year, offsetting energy used by the MLTI program per year. “The solar panels offset 600 laptops, that effectively run 8 hours a day while saving energy,” said Hopkins. Currently, the students can
look at the real time production of the solar panels year-round with a web-based tool capturing the amount of energy the panels are giving off. Students and teachers can also look at the production of electricity around the world and at other schools. The panels are now an energy saver for the school as well as a science lesson for stu-

survivors. The stories compiled for the performances will be read by a cast of volunteers from the local community, and the authors will remain confidential. For survivors, writing their experiences can be a powerful part of the healing process, and for others to hear these true stories, in the survivor’s own words, raises awareness about the reality and prevalence of abuse our family members, friends and neighbors experience here in York County. The performances in York and Biddeford will be the first presentations of this new, unique project of Caring Unlimited. Tickets for the Survivor Stories Project are $5 in advance, $10 at the door ($5 at the door for students or seniors with valid ID). ~ News ~ North Berwick to Hold Community Garden Launch Days NORTH BERWICK – Community Garden Launch Days will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6 (rain date) at the North Berwick Elementary School (formerly North Berwick Primary School). Saturday work hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are needed to set fence posts, fill raised beds with loam, and form walkways between the beds. Bring a picnic lunch, your garden gloves, tools, energy, and community spirit. The Community Garden is open to anyone who wishes to grow their own vegetables, herbs, and flowers. While rental fees will enable the garden to sustain its operating costs, the garden needs community effort to get it started. Many of our neighbors and local businesses have already donated their time and resources. Additional donations such as composted manure, seeds, mulch and straw are useful items that growers of
a limited income can use. In the first year there will be fifteen raised beds available for rent with space for potential future growth. A plot will be designated for Maine Harvest For Hunger to provide donations to local food pantries. The North Berwick Community Garden is now accepting applicants. Rental applications and general regulations will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is available in the school parking lot. In preparation for a wonderful gardening experience, Noble Adult Education is offering gardening classes through February. Some topics include: Getting Started – Novice, Seed Starting, Organic Gardening, and more. For these classes, call Noble Adult & Community Education at 207-676-3223. For more information about the Community Garden, email jeansstover@gmail.com.

Petition Drive Reaches Tipping Point for Complex YORK – The Friends of the Greater York Recreational Complex, a volunteer group advocating for an indoor recreation complex with a swimming pool on town owned land on Bog Road in York, exceeded the 641 signatures required in a petition drive for the November referendum in less than three weeks. The petitioned question asks, “Shall the town vote to authorize the selectmen to negotiate and enter into an agreement, if feasible, to lease a portion of town-owned land on Bog Road with the Friends of the Greater York Recreational Complex for the purpose of allowing construction of a recreational complex, including indoor swimming, fitness and multi-purpose gymnasium facilities.” The petition was well received by the community and the question will likely be placed on the ballot in November. The York Town hall is in the process of conducting an official count of the signatures for the York Selectmen’s review. “Parents and seniors were lining up at our tables to sign the petition. We had very little time to gather the required signatures. In less than 3 short weeks, we exceeded the goal with over 700 signatures. The swimming pool project seems to be reaching a tipping point in the community,” said board President, Ray McMahon. To date, the volunteer organization has raised over $34,000 in funds for a feasibility study portraying the costs and income potential for the proposed recreation complex and architecture concept plans with Lassel Architects.. The feasibility study included a review of aquatic and recreation facilities around the country. Similar recreation centers were funded through generous donations from individuals
with the means that came forward wanting to make a difference in their community. The group is grateful to the businesses that supported the drive by allowing the group to setup tables, including the Bagel Basket, St. Joe’s Coffee, York Corner True Value Hardware, The Lobster in the Rough, and York Youth Football. They are thrilled with the continued support of Perkins Real Estate who is generously donating to the organization with every closing. This recreation complex is being designed, in part, to address the needs of York’s senior population and to provide safe and healthy opportunities for kids and teenagers to engage in after school and on weekends. In addition to indoor swimming pools, the group envisions an indoor multi-sport court that

may allow for tennis, basketball, volleyball, as well as other community programs in one gymnasium. The center will significantly impact the region’s economy and vital tourism business. The health and wellness of the community is at the heart of the organization’s mission. For regular updates on the Greater York Recreation Complex and to view the latest presentation on the project, visit www.greateryorkcomplex.org and www.facebook.com/yorkswimtennis. To find out how you can be involved with this group, please email info@greateryorkcomplex.org. Goodall Hospital Celebrates 85 Years and the New Celebration Garden SANFORD – Community members recently joined Goodall Hospital board members, physicians and staff to celebrate the Sanford hospital’s 85th Anniversary. Henrietta D. Goodall Hospital opened on August 12, 1928 by Thomas Goodall in memory of his late wife Henrietta. Over the years the hospital has grown into a healthcare organization that employs nearly 900 individuals and serves greater York County. Goodall will soon merge with Southern Maine Medical Center to form Southern Maine Health Care to enhance and strengthen the services offered to our county and ensure that health care is offered in this region long into the future. Patsy Aprile, Goodall Hospital’s President and CEO, delivered the opening remarks from the new Celebration Garden, located in the center circle of the hospital main entrance. Work on the Garden began nine months ago when an old tree was taken down and the sewer line running under the circle was replaced. The Celebration Garden was made possible through the generous support of the William Oscar Emery Trust, which awards grants to charitable organizations located in Sanford for the specific purpose of beautifying the community. Local businesses, Springvale Nurseries and Heritage Memorials, did the majority of the work associated with the garden, which features beautiful walk-ways, splendid plantings of shrubs and plants around a Norwegian fir tree, which was planted by Salmon Falls Nurseries in the fall of 2012. In the center of the walk-ways is a meditative fountain which was donated by Jackie Desrochers in memory of her late husband, Roland. Other gracious donors include the Aprile Family, Isabel Schmedemann, Bonnie Deveau, Liz Dominick, Arlene Carroll and Terry Lacroix. Employees and community members To place your

Keep your local care. If you want to keep your care with your local health care provider, we urge you to read this message. As part of the Affordable Care Act that President Obama signed in 2010, a method for all Americans to find affordable health insurance options goes into effect October 1, 2013 called the Health Insurance Marketplace. Here, individuals and small businesses will be able to compare and shop for health insurance plans. Those in southern York County, Maine need to know some facts before choosing a plan. In Maine, two health insurers have been approved by the Maine Bureau of Insurance to sell policies in the marketplace: “Maine Community Health Options” and “Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield”. While both companies offer comparable pricing and coverage structure, only one of them offers coverage for services at York Hospital and with York Hospital physicians: Maine Community Health Options (MCHO). MCHO is a nonprofit, Maine based consumer operated and oriented health insurance plan whose products feature a range of benefit plan designs and a comprehensive statewide network of healthcare providers, including York Hospital. If you choose this plan, coverage INCLUDES care at York Hospital and with our network of physicians. The Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield plans on the health insurance marketplace EXCLUDE coverage for services at York Hospital. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield decided to exclude 6 of the 38 hospitals in Maine - York Hospital, Central Maine Medical Center, Bridgton Hospital, Rumford Hospital, Parkview Adventist Medical Center and Mercy Hospital - in its new narrow network health insurance marketplace plans. If you choose their plans on the marketplace, you will be forced to go out of the area for your health care needs. Why is York Hospital excluded from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Narrow Network? This was not a decision York Hospital made. We were never approached to join the network by Anthem. We have asked Anthem for an explanation as to why we were excluded and have not received a credible answer.

Participants raised more than $40,000 to fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. “I was inspired by the York Beach area residents uniting in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease at Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Jessica James, Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter Director of Communications and Advocacy. “With funds raised, the Alzheimer’s Association will be able to provide much needed care and support to people affected by the disease as well as fund critically needed Alzheimer’s research.” Walk to End Alzheimer’s participants did more than complete the walk. They
learned more about Alzheimer’s disease and the Association’s critical role in the fight against it, including the latest about Alzheimer’s research and current clinical trials, how they can become involved in advocacy efforts at home and in Washington, DC and the Association’s support programs and services. The event also included an emotional tribute ceremony, led by local participants, to honor those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In Maine alone, there are more than 37,000 people living with Alzheimer’s. For more information or to make a donation visit alz.org/ walk.

caring for a senior loved one. Studies increasingly point to caregiving as a leading stressor for families. In fact, one U.S. study revealed that more than half (52.8%) of those caring for individuals with diseases including cancer or Alzheimer’s had scores indicating depression.* In response to this growing issue, the local Home Instead Senior Care® office has launched a public awareness campaign – Family Caregiver Stress Relief at FamilyCaregiverStressRelief.com – to help family caregivers determine if they are at risk for distress and to minimize problems before they escalate. Included in the program are two new tools: The Are You a Caregiver Quiz, which is designed to help a family caregiver self-identify and recognize the role of a caregiver, and the Family Caregiver Distress Assessment, adapted for the Home Instead Senior Care network by Dr. Peter Vitaliano of the University of Washington. The assessment allows caregivers to determine their risk for distress and resulting emotional and physical issues, including depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. “So many spouses and adult children are unaware of their potential risk of caregiver distress because they don’t see themselves as caregivers,” said Howard Schultz, a local Home Instead Senior Care owner in Maine. “These new resources
enable them to understand their role, the stresses they may face as a caregiver, and how that stress might lead to more serious health effects.” A recent Home Instead Senior Care study discovered that caregivers are prone to hiding their emotions and, as a result, their health suffers. Approximately 74 percent of caregivers who hide their feelings report fatigue, 53 percent report difficulty sleeping, 37 percent report depression, and 30 percent weight gain or loss. Research shows that certain characteristics make family caregivers more vulnerable to caregiver distress, the top being: Gender Women report more psychological distress than men (however, male caregivers have more negative physiological responses to caregiving, including higher blood sugar and insulin levels, poorer cholesterol and immune function, and obesity). Reluctance to ask for help Caregivers who won’t ask for help are setting themselves up for the kind of exhaustion that can lead to distress. Health & Fitness Color Your Plate the Color of Autumn Although the season of BBQs and picnics maybe be coming to an end, the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, notes that the Autumn season brings a variety of seasonal fruits and produce that are good for the heart and the brain. “Fall is the perfect time to
incorporate vegetables and fruits into your diet,” notes Hannaford Registered Dietician Kris Lindsey. “Options like apples, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, pears and kale are at their peak during this time of year and are full of nutrients that can help reduce your risk for stroke.” According to the American Heart Association and Ameri-
can Stroke Association, fruits and vegetables with color contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemicals that have different disease-fighting elements. These compounds may be important in reducing the risk of many conditions, including stroke – our nation’s No. 4 leading cause of death and leading cause of long term disability. The Association recommends at least 4-5 servings per day of fruits and vegetables based on a 2000 calo-
rie diet as part of a healthy lifestyle that can lower your risk for this deadly disease. “Your goal should be to see a rainbow of color when you look at your plate,” states Lindsey. “A diversity of color of healthy foods usually means a variety of health benefits that can lend itself to helping control weight, improve cholesterol and lower blood pressure.” Seasonal produce is often more abundant and more afford-
able—helping to take a strain off your pocketbook as well. By taking advantage of the season’s harvest, you can help you and your family be healthier. With nearly 78 million American adults obese and one in three children considered overweight or obese, it’s important to take control of your diet by making healthy choices. Health & Fitness Physical Therapy a Vital Part of Treatment and Recovery
Illnesses of the musculoskeletal system can result in temporary loss of mobility. But physical therapy can help to prevent those temporary problems from becoming permanent. The American Physical Therapy Association says physical therapists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages who have conditions that limit their abilities to perform functional activities. Limitations in mobility may result from injury or illness or be present at birth. Many physical therapists develop a plan to reduce pain and restore function through various treatment techniques with the ultimate goal of restoring a patient’s functional independence. Physical therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who must receive a degree from an accredited physical
therapist program before taking national licensure exams that enable them to open a practice or work in a facility. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 30 percent growth in physical therapy careers through 2018, which is a rate better than all other occupations. Unemployment rates for physical therapists are very low, and they are in high demand. Physical therapists employ various physical modalities to help with certain conditions. For example, a patient may be asked to perform various range-of-motion exercises to restore function to an injured part of the body. Physical therapists also may use heat, cold and electrical impulses to reduce pain and stimulate muscle function. Physical therapy sessions frequently include some form of massage as well. While athletes frequently rely on physical therapy as they recover from injuries, others can
benefit from physical therapy as well. For example, physical therapy may work in conjunction with other treatments for cardiopulmonary disease. The cardiopulmonary system delivers oxygen to active tissues, which plays an important part in movement. When the cardiopulmonary system is compromised, muscles and other tissues may not function as they should, and certain exercises and mobility therapies may be needed. Physical therapists also aid in improving physical ailments related to neurological diseases, such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Physical therapists may also help treat poor vision, poor balance and paralysis. Children who have learning disabilities related to a neurological or physical condition may benefit from certain forms

of physical therapy. For example, vision problems can compromise academic performance, so physical therapy that aims to enhance visual tracking skills and strengthen the eyes in conjunction with corrective lenses may help youngsters, or even adult students, perform better in the classroom. Very often physical therapy will be recommended by a general doctor or an orthopedic surgeon as part of recovery from a surgery or a condition. The therapist may work in conjunction with another doctor to provide a program that helps foster a faster and safe recovery. Physical therapy tends to begin gradually and resistance is slowly built up as the body strengthens. The length of physical therapy will depend on the condition and the recommendation of the therapist and doctors overseeing the treatments. This article was provided by MetroCreative. If they don’t care for themselves, they may put their senior loved ones at risk. Whether it’s support groups, stress management techniques or respite help, caregivers need to realize the importance of managing their health, too,” said Schultz. Health & Fitness Understanding the Liver and How To Keep It Healthy The human liver performs an array of functions. In addition to detoxification and protein synthesis, the liver also produces chemicals necessary for digestion. Understanding the role of the liver can help people make smart choices about keeping their livers healthy and avoiding disease. The largest glandular organ of the body, the liver weighs about three pounds and is divided into four lobes of unequal size and shape. The liver can be found in the right side of the abdominal cavity. A healthy liver will be a reddish-brown color. One of the main functions of the liver is to eliminate harmful biochemical waste products. Much like the kidneys, the liver
acts a filter for the body, helping to detoxify alcohol and certain drugs. It also helps clear the body of environmental toxins that may have been ingested. The liver also produces substances that break down fats. The liver turns glucose to glycogen, which serves as a secondary energy storage in the body. The liver produces urea, the primary compound in urine, and makes certain amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. The liver also produces bile, which aids in the digestion and intestinal absorption of the fatsoluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Bilirubin is the main bile pigment that is formed from the breakdown of waste substances in red blood cells.
Jaundice is one of the most recognizable warning signs that the liver may not be functioning properly. Jaundice is the yellow coloring of the skin, the sclera in the eyes as well as other mucous
membranes. It is caused by hyperbilirubinaemia. If the liver isn’t functioning at full capacity, it cannot maintain the correct amount of bilirubin in the blood. Several behaviors can negatively affect the liver. Drinking too much alcohol and certain drugs can damage liver func-

BUSINESS & FINANCE 4 Reasons to Plan Your Child’s College Funding Wisely
Generation after generation, parents have taught their children to prepare for college now, which often means in elementary school or even earlier. These days, financial experts like John McDonough are giving parents the same advice. “Can you afford the college that will give them the best chance in life? Will paying for their education force you to have to work well into your golden years? These are the questions I ask parents every day,” says McDonough, CEO of Studemont Group College Funding Solutions, CollegeFundingFreedom. com, which offers advice for par-
ents worrying about how to pay for their child’s education. “Many parents really don’t know how to begin answering these questions; they are afraid of walking into a financial situation that they won’t be able to safely walk out of. But the alternative – saddling their children with debt well into their 30s and 40s – is not an appealing alternative.” McDonough reviews four disturbing trends in the challenge of paying for a college education: The net worth of today’s 30-somethings Adults in their 30s have 21 percent less net worth than 30-somethings 30 years ago, according to a new Urban Institute
report. Why? Much of it has to do with high-interest student loans and credit card debt. The return on investment of a college education is excellent – college grads earn 84 percent more than those with only a high school diploma, according to Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce. But paying off that investment without outside help is exceedingly burdensome for a graduate.
important than this being a crucial social epidemic, it’s potentially a very real problem for your child. President Obama scored some political points in identifying with most Americans when he said his student load debt was paid off only after he was elected to the U.S. Senate. Two-thirds of students leave college with some form of debt, according to the Federal Reserve Bank.
Student loan debt is even greater than credit card debt That’s right – topping all Americans who have made poor decisions with their credit cards are ambitious high school graduates, whose collective student load debt shoots past $1 trillion! More
Fluctuating interest rates Recent controversy over federal Stafford loans interest rates adds to the insecurity of borrowing as a college financing strategy. Given the unpredictability of Congress, which allowed the U.S, credit rating to drop while standing on political principles, one can’t reliably predict whether interest rates will rise or fall. Your children cannot refinance their loans While a borrower who has racked up tens of thousands of dollars in gambling debt can refinance
their payments, student loans remain at fixed rates. In collecting money on student loans, there is no statute of limitation, and today it’s very common – the norm, actually – for student loan holders to take nearly two decades to pay off their debt. With the annual average cost of public universities exceeding $22,000 per year, and the same often surpassing $50,000 at private universities, it’s no surprise. About John McDonough John McDonough is the managing member at Studemont Group, which is primarily focused on helping retirees gain peace of mind with unique market rescue and recovery programs. He is also founder, president and CEO of Studemont Group College Funding Solutions. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by this articles.
How to Start a RecessionResistant Business The latest statistics from the Small Business Administration indicate that two-thirds of new businesses survive two years, while about 45 percent survive four years. Such odds inspire curiosity as to how entrepreneurs have the gumption to open new businesses. As challenging as it can be to turn an idea into a successful
business, opening a new business in an industry with a track record for stability is one way to reduce the risk of a new business venture. Although there is no such thing as a guarantee in the business world, certain industries seem to garner a steady See START page 19...

stream of business no matter strong or weak the overall economy may be. While not all of these businesses are necessarily glamorous and some may focus on less popular aspects of daily life, each is a part of industries that tend to thrive regardless of the economy. Funeral services Death and taxes are two inevitabilities in life. As such, funeral homes will always be in demand. Accountants Like death, taxes are one of life’s guarantees. To the layperson, some of the intricacies of tax law can be quite confusing. As such, accountants will always be in demand. Pushing numbers and sorting spreadsheets may not be exciting, but accounting is a stable and often lucrative way to pay the bills. Veterinary services Much like doctors are in demand, so are those professionals who cater to our feathered and furry companions. A career in veterinary sciences can be
profitable as well. Pharmaceuticals The pharmaceuticals industry is big business. The National Pharmacists Association says that many pharmacists routinely fill more than 20 prescriptions per hour, which is indicative of just how booming the pharmaceutical industry has become. According to the National Institutes of Health, per capita drug expenditures have increased at an average annual rate of 10.8 percent in the United States and Canada since 1996.
Liquor stores Liquor stores are relatively recession-proof. When times are booming, people celebrate and throw parties, complete with alcoholic beverages. When times are bad, some turn to alcohol to numb the situation. As a result, liquor stores tend to thrive whether the economy is booming or has gone bust. Pawnbrokers When operated efficiently, pawn shops can be very lucrative businesses, especially during tough financial times when people need extra money. Pawn shops enable

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Historic New England Holds Its First Fine Arts and Crafts Festival SOUTH BERWICK – Many Seacoast artists, including Robin Bettencourt, Robert Alan, Laura Cleminson, and Glynis Dixon, are participating in Historic New England’s first Fine Arts and Crafts Festival on the grounds of the c. 1785 Hamilton House on Saturday and Sunday, September 28 and 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This two-day festival is a juried show featuring the fine work of more than one hundred New England artisans. Items for sale include jewelry, pottery, furniture, toys, glass, photography, knitted sweaters and throws, woodwork, folk carvings, and
more. The day includes first floor tours of the Hamilton House, one of the region’s quintessential Colonial Revival-style country estates; food vendors; live entertainment by local favorites including Maine Squeeze, Bennett and Perkins, and Seacoast Men of Harmony; and a raffle that benefits Historic New England. Admission is $5. Admission is free to Historic New England members and children under 12. For information, call 617-227-3956. The Hamilton House is at 40 Vaughan’s Lane, South Berwick. Poundstone Resturns to Ogunquit OGUNQUIT – After two sold out nights in July, Jonathan’s Restaurant is proud to welcome back, comedian Paula Poundstone in concert Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. Twenty-five years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country – stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. While there is no doubt that Poundstone is funny, the thing that probably separates her from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd. Her newest comedy CD, “I Heart Jokes: Paula Tells Them in Boston” was recorded during a performance at the Wilbur Theatre in the heart of the city and was released on April fool’s Day 2013. Paula is also a published author and lecturer. Her hard cover book, “There is Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say” (Crown, 2006, with a forward by Mary Tyler Moore) is still in release on audio (Highbridge) and in paperback. Other writing credits include the back page columnist of Mother Jones, The Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and Glamour magazine. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Your Files Can Be Held For Ransom! Earlier this year, a terrible new type of malware known as ransomware began to appear. The Cryptolocker hijacker quietly searches through your hard drive, and any other networked drives that your computer can access including your server, finds your personal and business files and wraps them up in strong encryption. You won’t even know that it has been installed on your system until it has finished encrypting all your files, then it will announce its presence with a brightly colored pop-up window demanding that you pay a fee of $300, before the timer runs out, to get your files back. Many antivirus programs have not been able to catch this ransomware until it is too late. The scary thing about CryptoLocker is that it really does encrypt your files, and there is not a way to get them back unless you either have a backup that was not connected to your computer at the time of infection, or you pay the ransom. Any backup drives that are connected to your computer will be encrypted, as will your server
if your computer has access to it. Cloud backup services like Carbonite and Mozy will simply backup the encrypted files to their servers, so unless you can retrieve earlier versions of the files, (Carbonite keeps them for 30 days) you are out of luck. What can you do to protect yourself from this malicious program? Here is what I did: I took an external hard drive that is larger than my computer hard drive, and plugged it into the USB port on my computer. Then, using Acronis True Image, I clicked on the “Backup and Recovery” tab, and selected, “Disk and Partition backup”. In the window, I checked off my local disk (C) as the source, and the USB drive as the destination. Finally, I clicked the “Back up now” button to begin the backup. Three hours later, when the backup was finished, I unplugged the drive from my computer, and put it away. I will repeat this process at the end of every week, and I might even get a second hard drive and alternate backups just in case one of them fails. I urge you to find a way to backup or archive your files so that they are protected. You can use an

external hard drive as long as it is not attached to your computer once the backup is finished. You could also use a USB flash drive, or burn your files to CDs or DVD, and then store them in a safe place. If this is something that you are not comfortable doing yourself, contact your local computer shop and get an estimate, this is something that I love to help my customers with. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, A question about Excel - a pretty elementary question, I think, but I am not a practiced Excel user. I have (and use slightly) Excel 2007 and 2010 on my laptops. I use the program to maintain a record of the business miles I drive each year, for tax purposes, so each year I have to try to recreate the same form to fill in. Here’s the question: How do I ask the program to carry out the same procedure in multiple rows of the same column? (e.g. if I want column H to show the product of (G - F) in each row, and want this to happen in every row from 1 to 67, how do I program that?) I hope this is clear enough. Thank you for any help you can give! Jo Dear Jo, Thank you so much for your detailed description! It makes it very easy to answer your question.
To make every row in column H show the product of (G - F), first make your formula in the first row. Make sure the formula is correct, and showing you the correct results, then, follow these simple steps. 1. Click on the cell with the formula once to highlight it. 2. Notice in the lower-right corner of the highlighted cell there is a small box. Hover your cursor over that small box and it will turn into a plus sign. 3. When your cursor turns into a plus sign, hold down your left mouse button and drag down as many rows as you want to copy the formula to. 4. Release your mouse button, and excel will copy the formula to each row, relative to that row. Now, if the formula in row 3 is G3 - F3, the copied formula in row 4 would be G4 - F4. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a Dell XPS 420 with a built-in webcam and my OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit. My problem is that I can only open the webcam when I’m on Skype. How can I open the webcam normally? Thank you, Teddy Dear Teddy,

I’m not sure what you mean by normally, but a webcam is kind of like your speakers. It works in programs that are made to use a webcam, but doesn’t have its own program unless the software that came with the webcam includes some sort of camera software. My Logitech webcam came with a disk, and had some software for using the camera to take pictures, but when I moved it to my new computer, I didn’t install the CD and while the webcam works with Google hangouts and other programs, the only way I can access the webcam directly is through the control panel. I wish I knew what you wanted to do with the webcam, I might be able to help you find some software to accomplish your task. Their sound is hot acoustic jazz, mixed with soul, flamenco, and bebop influences, played on traditional French jazz guitars. Whether they’re playing a musette waltz from 1930 or a funk-inspired original tune, Ameranouche’s music is rhythmic, vigorous, and elegant. If you’ve never experienced hot acoustic swing music, this is your chance to hear the joyful, uplifting, and dance-inducing sounds of Gypsy jazz performed by one of the premier groups in the country. In the words of Liz Buckley of NHPR, “The members of Ameranouche are keeping the traditions of Django Reinhardt

Warren Whitney, of Maine Coast Heritage Trust, notes the importance of taking time to visit new places in the state. ~ News ~ Hannaford Donates Supplies for School Emergency Kits WELLS – A few days before the start of the new school year, Hannaford in Wells donated 500 bottles of water and five cases of granola bars to Wells Elementary School to help stock student emergency lockdown kits. This makes the second year that Hannaford has made this special donation. This year, Hannaford also donated four “banana” boxes full of school supplies plus several backpacks for individual student use. Bringing these items to the school, on August 30, was Hannaford Assistant Store Manager Adam Bowen and Meat and
Seafood Manager Darren Roberts. Greeting Bowen and Roberts at WES and helping them unload the items was WES head custodian David Boyd and Assistant Principal Ken Spinney. “We’re extremely appreciative of Hannaford for providing us with waters and granola bars for our lockdown kits,” said Spinney. “We take safety very seriously.” “It’s a wonderful thing to know that our community members and businesses support our schools this way,” added Spinney. “And it was a pleasant surprise today receiving a number of backpacks because these are

Bulldogs Blank Three Opponents
SOUTH BERWICK – Soccer goals are usually hard to come by but over the last week they have been rare for the opponents of the Berwick Academy boys’ soccer team. Over the course of the week the Bulldogs blanked three opponents coming away with two victories and a draw. The action left Berwick with a 4-0-1 overall mark, 3-0-1 in the Eastern Independent League going into a clash Wednesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass., against Beaver Country Day School. The Bulldogs defeated Lexington Christian and Bancroft School by 2-0 scores before battling Concord Academy to a scoreless standoff. On Homecoming Day Concord played Berwick tough, having the edge in possession time and scoring chances but the stout defense of the home team maintained the shutout. Concord was impressive in the closing minutes of the game when goalie Erik Wisniewski made a diving save on a shot from the penalty area by Sam Stogdon and the goalie’s best friend – the post – came into play, deflecting a shot from Martin Sagal. Concord goalie Chris Pappey had two saves in the game while Wisniewski was
call on to make five stops. The tie left Concord with a 1-0-1 overall and league record of 1-0-1. In a battle of Bulldogs – Berwick and Bancroft – the home team managed to pull out the decision on the strength of two first half goals. Senior captain Stephen Sherbahn scored 13 minutes into the game and 16 minutes later Alex Katz added the insurance goal. That was more than enough for the Berwick defense with Emile Lebel, Will Grant, Seth Wyskiel, and Trevor Schaepe doing yeoman service. Bancroft goalie Dylan McDonough had nine saves in the game while Berwick’s Wisniewski had two saves and San Salvati added one. The loss dropped Bancroft’s record to 1-1-0 for the season. The first half was scoreless despite heavy pressure on the Lexington goal by the Bulldogs. Stephen Terenzio scored Berwick’s two second half goals to put the encounter into the win column. Thomas Munch had six saves for Lexington while Wisniewski had a pair for Berwick. Lexington is 1-2-0 for the season.
Berwick Academy’s Girls’ Soccer Win Three Also SOUTH BERWICK – The girls’ soccer team from Berwick Academy posted three victories last week, including a 5-0 shutout of Hyde School. The Bulldogs also topped Winsor, 2-1, and Bancroft 3-1 lifting their record to 4-1 going into a Wednesday date with Landmark School. On Blue and White Day the Bulldogs got its offense together despite the outstanding play of the Hyde goalie. Berwick’s attack began early on when at the two minute mark Aimee Briand of Barrington, N.H., had a great chance but the keeper came away with the save. Two minutes later Berwick earned a corner, and Brooke Downey of Eliot found senior captain Cora Ordway of Rollinsford, N.H., who blasted a shot to the lower left corner of the net. Again the Hyde keeper made a huge diving save, only to find Siobahn McDermott right there to tuck the rebound into the corner. Berwick led, 1-0. In the 16th minute Becca Siegel of York found Emily Borkowski of Wells who set up Brooke Downey who made it 2-0 and the game was on. Kelly Burke added a pair of goals and Hannah Seekins had one too complete the scoring. Berwick held a 19-1 advanOUTLOOK

tage in shots and a 13-1 advantage on corners. Goalies Toriena St. Pierre of Portsmouth and Christina Grassie of Somersworth combined for the shutout. At Winsor the Bulldogs got their first at the 14 minute mark when Caroline Hernon got the ball on the right flank outside the 18, carried it toward the end line and passed to Aimee Briand who blasted home. In the second half the Berwick defense was solid with efforts from Parker Johnson of Kittery, Maddie Balas, Christina Grassie, Borkowski and Kaitlyn Wurzer. The Bulldogs increased the
lead in the 48th minute when Maddie Balas found Liv Hurley open who blasted the ball over the Winsor keeper. At Bancroft Kelly Burke put in a rebound to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 but the home team rallied to tie it at the intermission. Just 30 seconds into the second half Brooke Downey of South Berwick received the ball from Maddie Balas and hit a shot from the left flank that sailed over the Bancroft keeper for the game winner. Less than 2 minutes later Aimee Briand found Siegel whose shot sailed past the Bancroft keeper to complete the scoring.

...LIVER from page 17 strengthening the membranes of cells in the body. Hepatitis is an inflammatory disease of the liver that is caused by a number of different viruses. Hepatitis comes in many forms and is even named A through G, depending on the virus responsible for the infection. Cirrhosis is scarring that appears on the walls of the liver. While alcohol consumption is largely blamed for liver disease, it is only one of the many causes. Cancer also can occur in the liver, and liver cancers typically spread through the bloodstream from other areas of the body.
~ News ~ Keeping the liver healthy Maintaining a healthy liver involves eating a well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water, which helps to flush toxins out of the body. Foods that are high in fat or sugar can be harder on the
liver, and should be consumed in moderation. People should avoid overconsumption of alcohol and only use drugs as prescribed by a doctor. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center,
drinking 10 or more cups of green tea per day was associated with less liver disease in men. The liver is vital to human health, performing so many functions in the body. So it pays to keep the liver healthy by eating
well and avoiding drugs and alcohol. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by articles from MetroCreative.
