Lynzi Pacitti: Leading Down the Field By Dan Campanella, Staff Writer YORK Lynzi Pacitti’s love for football started when she was five years old. Growing up in family where football was not the sacred sport that it is to many of the families around this area, she found that she had a natural attraction to the constant action. As if to predestine the rest of her life, even at this young age Pacitti understood that if she was to follow any path it would have to be one that she created herself. This drive pushed her to join the York Wild Cats football team in the early 1990’s as a freshman, playing as a running back and safety. After high School she moved on to play with

semi-pro women’s teams in both Maine and Hawaii. In 2010, Pacitti began her coaching career as an assistant coach for a professional women’s tackle football team in Jacksonville, Florida. After three seasons and a perfect 24-0 record during her tenure, Pacitti made the choice to return to her roots by moving back to York. In 2015 she began as the head coach for the Mite Wildcats, a York youth football program for children. It was during this time that Pacitti reconnected with Coach Matt Nelson, who was on the coaching staff when she played football for the Wildcats in high school. When Nelson was picked up as the new Wildcats varsity football

head coach this year, Pacitti’s experience was a logical choice to add to the staff. Now acting as the special team’s coordinator and aiding with the defensive squad for the varsity team, Coach Pacitti also pulls double duty as the head coach for the junior varsity team. “It’s unbelievable to be able to come back to where I started and share what I know. It feels good and familiar. I have a lot of pride because I was a York Wildcat and now I get to coach York Wildcats.” When asked what she brings that is unique, Pacitti says she “has learned a lot from coaching at different levels” and that she “can

York River Study Committee Hosts Maritime History Speaker

YORK The York River Study Committee invites students and community members to a talk by UNH professor and prize-winning author Jeff Bolster titled, “A Watery Kingdom Transformed – York River and the Piscataqua Region Through Time. In this richly illustrated talk, Professor Bolster reconstructs centuries of the human and ecological

history of our region, providing context for many of the issues we face today. The chance to organize this community-oriented presentation seemed well-timed to marine sciences teacher and York River Study Committee member Mike Masi. “We have a great opportunity now to help safeguard what’s valuable about the York River. Her advice to “follow what you love to do and go after it speaks to all of us. The inherent obstacles that she has undoubtedly faced to get to where she is today are turned into experiences to strengthen her body and mind, where most people would see them only as deterrents. What she stands for is hard work and perseverance, and this unwavering character is the example that all can follow.

“Further measures like this proposed Section 301 action will hurt Hussey’s ability to compete because the custom molds and tools they use to make their products exist only in China. To relocate or replicate these products will cause Hussey to incur higher costs as it locks in half of its contracts well before beginning new projects. Subjecting key products to new tariffs will disrupt its supply chain and cause irreparable harm to its long-term standing in its industry,” continued the Maine delegation. “Due to the disproportionate economic harm that imposing duties on these products would cause Hussey Seating, we strongly urge you to remove… [these] tariff subheadings…” These proposed import taxes are part of a new $200 billion tranche of tariffs aimed at China. Hussey Seating has already experienced substantial price increases for domestically sourced steel as a result of the Department of Commerce’s earlier Section 232 tariffs on global steel imports. The Maine delegation is continuing to work to help other Maine industries, such as the lobster industry, mitigate the impact of recent trade actions.

WASHINGTON, DC A new round of tariffs recently proposed by the Trump Administration to crack down on Chinese intellectual property theft could inadvertently cause significant financial harm to Hussey Seating Company, a family-owned business in North Berwick that manufactures bleachers and auditorium seating for distribution across the globe. On behalf of the company and the 300 people it employs, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Bruce Poliquin wrote to the U.S.’s top trade negotiator, urging him not to include three particular product categories in the latest round of tariffs against Chinese imports. “Businesses in Maine, like Hussey Seating, are already suffering at the expense of previous tariffs imposed by the Administration…,” Senators Collins and King and Representatives Pingree and Poliquin wrote in their letter to U.S. Trade Ambassador Robert Lighthizer. “[Hussey] has already seen its prices for domestically sourced steel, aluminum, and other parts dramatically increase because of earlier Section 232 trade actions by the Department of Commerce.”

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, When I save documents from my Gmail they automatically are saved as Google Chrome Docs that I cannot seem to reopen. How do I save them as a regular PDF file??? My saved computer documents is littered with Google Chrome Docs. that I can’t seem to reopen. How do I keep it simple and just save into PDF’s? Thank you, Tom Dear Tom, It sounds like you are just using the wrong save icon. When you are using gmail, you are looking at a web page. If you try to save something (like a pdf attachment) using the menu in chrome, you are saving the entire web page you are currently viewing, and not the document attached to your email. Here is how to save an attachment in your Gmail. 1. Open the email containing the attachment. 2. Scroll to the

bottom of the email to view the attachment. It should be located just above the “Reply and “Forward buttons. 3. Hover your mouse over the attached document and you will see two icons appear, click on the icon that has an arrow pointing down. This will start the process of downloading the document. 4. Select the location you want to save the file to, and click the “Save button in the dialog box. I hope this will help you save your attachments. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I don’t really know how to start except that I have been trying to get my drivers updated for at least two months and I can not get any success these companys that say that’s what they do is absolutely nothing. Everything I find tells me I have 5 outdated drivers. I need to buy a new printer but I bought two different ones and neither

would work at all the repairman says its the driver but I have tried everything I can find online with the word driver written on it and I still don’t have a printer .My computer is all messed up in every way. should I reset my computer back to factory setting? and if I do will I have my drivers updated? I have an HP all in one windows 10 about 2 years old. Thank you so very much, Gladys Dear Gladys, Those companies that scan your computer and then say you need updated drivers, which of course you have to pay for are nothing but a scam. Any driver that you might need can be downloaded for free from the device manufacturer’s website. A driver is simply a software program that is used to control a piece of hardware attached to your computer. Your mouse has a driver, your keyboard has a driver, your screen has a driver, etc. Most of these drivers are already included in Windows 10, and will most likely never need to be updated. Your printer will come with drivers on a disk, and if for some reason they don’t work with your computer, the printer manufacturers web-

site will have updated drivers that you can download and use. You don’t need any of these programs that scan your computer and then try to sell you a version that will provide updated drivers. The fact that you have tried to set up two different printers tells me that one of two things is going on. Either your computer has been compromised by all the driver updating software you have installed, or the printers are not being set up correctly. You can fix the first potential problem by resetting your computer back to factory settings. If that doesn’t work, you might need to find a technician who is experienced in setting up printers. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been reading your helpful hints for many years and appreciate your answers. On Facebook the box on the right hand side that is always there with the listing of those ready to chat is annoying .Is there a way to remove the chat list of names? I tried several things and nothing works. Thank you in advance, Sue Dear Sue, I’m guessing you are referring to the chat sidebar. That is

fairly simple to remove (actually, you are only hiding it) if you just know where to look. In the lower right corner of the facebook page, there is a search box with a small gear next to it. Click on that gear. In the list of options that appear when you click on that gear, you can select a couple that will remove those annoying names. If you click on, “Hide Sidebar it will remove the entire right column. This is probably the option you are looking for. If you click “Turn off Chat it will “grey out the list of people you could chat with, but it will still be there. If you click, “Show Ticker it will display recent activity by your facebook friends on top, with the list of friends ready to chat. You can actually put your mouse in the section between the two lists and drag it down. That way, you can still see the ticker, but not the chat list. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I not computer savvy, so I have a question. How do I move a line or sentence in a document I create up or down? For instance, If I placed a large space between a line and I want to move the line up, how do I do this, or move it down. Thanks for your help, Joe Dear Joe, To move a line down, just click at the beginning of the line, and press your, “Enter key until the line is where you want it. To move a line up, Click at the beginning of the line, and press the backspace key until the line has moved up to the position you desire. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Painters interpret moments of time with images that they create from memory, sketches or life drawings. Photographers capture time with images that didn’t exist before their shutter snapped, and that will be forever different after. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Ogunquit Performing Arts Presents 12th Annual Piano Festival OGUNQUIT Ogunquit Performing Arts celebrates its 12th Annual Elizabeth Dunaway Burnham Piano Festival by bringing two of the world’s best pianists to Ogunquit. This year’s festival features the music of the master composers of Austria, Germany and France, as performed by two internationally renowned artists: New York’s Sachiko Kato and Boston’s Victor Rosenbaum. Champagne receptions to meet the artists follow the performances. On Friday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m., Victor Rosenbaum opens the Festival with a program featuring the music of Brahms, Heiss, and Schubert. Mr. Rosenbaum has concertized widely as soloist and chamber music performer in the United States, Europe, Asia, Israel, and Russia in such prestigious halls as Tully Hall in New York and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. On Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m., Sachiko Kato performs works by Debussy and Ravel. Known for her expressive and gorgeous tone, Ms. Kato is a classical pianist whose interest ranges from Bach to the contemporary. She has performed throughout the United States and her native Japan, as well as in Canada and Brazil. Her current projects include a recording of the Brahms’s late piano works released in early 2017. On Sunday, October 7, at 3 p.m., the “middle Sunday” of the Festival, OPA’s Student Piano Recital showcases the area’s best young pianists. It is here that talented local students have the opportunity to perform on OPA’s fabled Concert Model C Steinway grand piano before a live audience. Admission to this performance is free.

Answers To This Week’s Puzzles

The Festival honors the memory of Elizabeth Dunaway Burnham, founder and first chairperson of Ogunquit Performing Arts. A pianist herself, Betty saw to it that OPA acquired its splendid Steinway. All concerts are at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, $30 Series, and $5 student, and may be purchased at the Dunaway Center, Ogunquit Camera Shop, Ogunquit Welcome Center, and Ogunquit Playhouse Downtown Box Office until 24 hours prior to the concerts. Program details may be found at www.ogunquitperformingarts.org.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ BUSINESS & FINANCE Home Sales Up in August, Prices Increase

AUGUSTA Strong sales continue in Maine’s single-family existing homes market. According to Maine Listings, REALTORS® sold 2,072 homes in August, equaling a 5.88% sales increase compared to August

2017. The median sales price for those homes increased 6.80% to $220,000. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “The fourth quarter is traditionally a strong time for real estate transactions,” says Kim

Gleason, 2018 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS® and Broker/Owner of McAllister Real Estate in Hallowell. “Currently, there are more than 10,000 active for-sale residential listings statewide, with

more coming onto the market every day. Buyers and sellers want to be settled before the holidays and take advantage of any tax benefits prior to year’s end.” Nationally, sales dipped

Women Declining In Workforce At its peak in 1999, the American workforce was dominated by female workers. At that time, 76 percent of women, including those who had children at home, worked outside of the home, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The tides have since shifted, and rates of female employment in the United States now fall well behind many European countries. Economic woes, a short supply of middleclass jobs and minimal family leave may have prompted the changes. According to a study from researchers at Johns Hopkins University, single women without children have actually driven the turnaround. Technology and international outsourcing have removed many low-skill, well-paying jobs from the workforce. Wages for work in healthcare services, laundry and social assistance — jobs dominated by women — have remained relatively stagnant for years. Despite this, the cost of living has steadily crept up. Other households tout the high cost of childcare and the relatively small amount of maternity leave allowed in the United States as reasons why they haven’t returned to the workforce after having children. The economic analysis resource The Upshot, powered by The New York Times, reports that many American companies give 12 weeks of maternity leave (largely unpaid), while most European countries give a year of paid leave and offer protections for part-time workers who want to return to the workforce. According to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, and France now outrank the U.S. in prime-age women’s labor force participation. The role women play as caregivers, not only for their own children or spouses, but for aging parents, also may be contributing to females dropping out of the labor force. A

chronic-needs family member, such as a parent with dementia, can take away focus from employment. This can quickly result in a loss of a job. Employers interested in keeping talented women in the workforce can change corporate policies to reflect changes in modern society, including higher divorce rates, college debt and the higher cost of living. Flexibility in schedules, modernized work environments that focus on mobile connectivity from home and lack of negative reper-

cussions for needing family time can help keep talented female employees working. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

1.0% over the past year, while the MSP increased 4.9% to $267,300. The regional Northeast experienced a 2.7% sales decrease and the MSP rose 2.6% to $292,800.

York Hospital Recovery Center Receives Grant to Help Patients for Substance Abuse YORK In support of Recovery Awareness Month, York Hospital is pleased to announce that the York Rotary Charitable Foundation has awarded a $12,500 grant to help the hospital provide services to community members who need access to substance misuse treatment services but who cannot afford to pay.

Recovery Awareness Month is a national campaign to promote the societal benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery for substance use disorders. The month long campaign celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive mes-

sage that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective – and people can and do recover. In response to the opioid crisis in our community, York Hospital has opened a first-ofits-kind treatment facility in the seacoast area that is leading the way to recovery for residents battling substance use disorder. The

York Hospital Recovery Center offers a medication-assisted treatment program that aims to provide a way out of addiction. The program is open to anyone in the York Hospital service area, with or without insurance, and has been created to help our local residents in the fight against this deadly epidemic. Accessibility is a priority of the York Hospital Recov-

ery Center. One central phone number, 207-351-2118, will respond to all Recovery Center inquiries. Whether from a loved one seeking guidance about how to help a family member with a substance use disorder, or somebody in urgent need of assistance for a personal situation, trained staff will provide timely access to care and direct each caller to appropriate resources.

Health & Fitness VA Report Shows Maine Healthcare has Improved for Veterans WASHINGTON Using an annual webbased report scorecard that measures, evaluates and benchmarks quality and efficiency at its medical centers, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently released data that showed significant improvements at the majority of its health care facilities. VA Maine HCS was one of the facilities that made positive strides in the benchmarks and is striving to continue progress. The key areas of improvement are Inpatient Flow, which includes Length of Stay and Readmission Rates. Length of Stay decreased by 20% and Readmission Rates decreased by 3%; all while maintaining a 0% Hospital Inquired Infection rate. “Four years ago, VISN 1 adopted Lean Six Sigma as the methodology of choice for process improvement. We adopted the philosophy, ‘Nothing about me, without me.’ Meaning, the people that do the work, know how to fix the work. Leadership supplies front line staff with the tools, education, and support necessary to return to their work units with the skills and abilities to improve their processes,” said Daniel Dücker, Interim Medi-

cal Center Director. Compared with data from the same period a year ago, the July 2018 release of VA’s Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning (SAIL) report showed 103 VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) have improved in overall quality — with the largest gains seen in areas where there were VA-wide improvement initiatives, such as mortality, length of stay and avoidable adverse events. Seven VAMCs had a small decrease in quality. “This is a major step in the right direction to improving our quality of services for our Veterans,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “Over the past year, we were able to identify our problems and implement solutions to fixing the issues at 71 percent of our facilities. I’m extremely proud of our employees and the progress they have made to raise VA’s performance for our nation’s heroes.” Additionally, of the 15 medical centers placed under the Strategic Action for Transformation program (StAT), an initiative that monitors high-risk medical centers and mobilizes resources to assist the facilities, five are no longer considered high-risk and 11 medical centers show meaningful improvements since being placed under StAT in January 2018.

School Hygiene Tips Children are in close contact with others at schools and daycare facilities, where germs can be easily transmitted. Children may not be as conscientious as adults in regard to the health risks associated with poor hygiene. These tips can keep students stay healthy and help prevent germs from being transported home, where they can affect other members of the family. • Hand washing is essential to good hygiene. What Kids Can Do in the Face of Bullying Many adults may recall being bullied or witnessing bullying when they were in school. Despite that, it’s important that adults, including parents and educators, not see bullying as an inevitable part of growing up. The effects of bullying can be severe, affecting those involved — including the bullied, the bullies and those who merely witness bullying — long after their school days have ended. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, bullying has been linked to various negative outcomes, mental health issues, substance abuse and suicide. When taking steps to combat bullying, parents and educators should not overlook the benefits of enlisting children in their efforts. Kids can be great allies in the fight

against bullying, and the following are some ways adults can work with youngsters who want to stop bullying.

tion to watch television, play a video game or engage in another activity rather than saying or doing something hurtful.

Teaching kids to respect others StopBullying.gov, the DHHS’ website devoted to stopping bullying once and for all, notes the importance of teaching kids to treat everyone, including other children, with respect. Parents can teach kids to pause before saying or doing something that can be harmful to someone else. Bullying inflicts physical and emotional pain on its victims, so teaching kids to recognize that words can be just as harmful as fists may encourage them to think twice before saying something mean to a classmate. The DHHS also recommends advising children to do something else if they feel an urge to say or do something mean. Walk away from a situa-

What kids being bullied can do Kids being bullied also can employ certain strategies to overcome bullying. The DHHS recommends teaching children to look at bullies and telling them to stop in a calm, clear voice. Laughing it off might also work for kids who find joking comes naturally to them. The DHHS advises against fighting back, instead suggesting kids walk away and stay away before finding an adult who can stop the bullying on the spot. Encouraging students to confide in adults they trust also can help them overcome bullying and the feelings of loneliness that bullying can elicit. Trusted adults can help children devise a plan to stop the bullying. The DHHS notes that most bullying happens when adults are not around, so staying near adults and other children can help kids avoid situations where they might be vulnerable to bullies.

Weekly Recipe: Roasted Colored Bell Pepper Tart I’m sure that some of you are picking a few colored peppers from the garden now and while they are fresh and tasty, give this recipe a try. Once cooked, it can be eaten either cold or hot, I like it better hot but, like leftover pizza, it is also good cold. The taste of the roasted peppers is entirely different than that of fried. If you do not have peppers in your garden, pick up a bag of mixed colored peppers at the supermarket.

brush the inside of the peppers. Place the peppers skin side up on a cookie sheet and then brush the skin side with the remaining oil mixture. Cook in a preheated oven at 400 degrees. For 20 minutes or until they begin to char slightly. Let the peppers cool slightly and slice thinly ½ wide strips. Arrange in the base of the pastry case, layering with Mozzarella cheese. 4} Beat the eggs, and milk and then add the basil. Season with salt and pepper and pour the mixture over the bell peppers. Put the tart pan on a cookie sheet and return to the oven for another 20 minutes, or until solidified. 5} For extra flavor add 6 to 10 basil leaves on top of the mixture and push into mixture before cooking. Despite all this, she gobbled down food and purred at our volunteers’ gentle touch. She’s been moved into Scaredy Cat School for care-giving, where we’re happy to report she’s making a speedy recovery. Precious is now climbing cat trees, chasing the laser dot, and enjoying catnip toys like other kittens. She’ll soon have surgery for her ear polyp to hopefully correct her balance problem. See how unstressed horses behave, how they interact with each other, their environment, and with you. ments and a silent auction as we continue to celebrate our 11th year of programming and the 1st anniversary of The Non Ridden Equine Association and Facebook groups, rising in popularity locally and in the international horse community. Horses that are used traditionally and live long enough become unridden typically due to age, health and injuries. Often these horses also become unwanted. Horses are sometimes acquired for the wrong reasons, misunderstood and passed on due to misinformation. Often horse owners lack experience and knowledge or rely on poor resources. The horse’s stoic nature

as a prey animal is not helpful as they don’t outwardly express pain and signs are subtle. In horses obtained for riding this can lead to missed signals and failure to get professional diagnosis though costly, necessary for the horses welfare. This year’s Autumn Horse is dedicated to the memory of a Thoroughbred named Chili. A sweet horse who’s last owner listened, understood and gave him the final gift. May he rest in peace. Elizabeth Flaherty, 98 World War II Nurse, AIDs Hospice Volunteer KENNEBUNK – Elizabeth Flaherty, the oldest resident at Huntington Common in Kennebunk, died Friday, September 21, 2018, surrounded by her children when she succumbed to cancer. Mrs. Flaherty – she liked to be called Betty – was continually asked for stories about her life from both residents and staff. She was one of eight children born on a Johnstown, PA farm during World War I. She never knew her father who died in a steel mill accident when she was an infant. After leaving Johnstown, Mrs. Flaherty became a nurse. Her nursing jobs included working at the residence of the British Ambassador in Washington, DC prior to the start of World War II. During WWII, Betty was a nurse at the mammoth Glen L. Martin aviation plant in Middle River, MD where she met and married a sailor, Jim

Flaherty, who was installing radar - then a secret weapon – into B-26 bombers being made and tested at the plant. After the war and a series of moves, Betty and Jim Flaherty settled outside of San Francisco where Jim was an executive for United Airline – though Mrs. Flaherty was terrified of flying for her entire life. She volunteered for a variety of causes, centered around the activities of her six children and her local church. However, in the 1980s, gay men in San Francisco began dying of a mysterious disease later named AIDS. Betty Flaherty joined a group of volunteers that began to establish clean and friendly hospices for the increasing number of young men dying from the disease. At an age when most people retired, Betty learned to become a florist and worked at her town’s local flower shop well into her 80s. When four of her children moved to New England, Mrs. Flaherty moved to Massachusetts, and then Kennebunk. Although she became the oldest resident at Huntington Common, she continued to volunteer to help other residents at the senior living community.

Mrs. Flaherty is survived by daughter, Kathy Taylor and her husband, Doug, and their four children; daughter, Betsy Slocombe and her husband, Tom, and their two sons; son, John Flaherty and his wife, Michelle, and their daughter; son, Jim Flaherty and his wife, Maureen; daughter Teresa Lane and her husband, Scott, and her four children; daughter MaryAnn McClintic and her partner, Steve Ruuska, and her three children. Betty has thirteen great-grandchildren with another on the way. Her husband, James Flaherty died in 1991. A funeral mass will be held by the family at St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Kennebunk on Thursday, October 4, at 11 a.m. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

GWRL Trust Announces Fall Hikes YORK COUNTY Enjoy New England’s famous fall weather and foliage with an outing at one of Great Works Regional Land Trust’s many preserves. Sponsored this fall by Hussey Seating, Jeweler’s Outlet, and South Berwick Dental, these guided hikes are free to members with a modest donation recommended for others. Featured this fall: Animal signs at Savage Wildlife Preserve, a history hike with Old Berwick Historical Society at Negutaquet Conservation Area, Keay Brook hike in Berwick, and two Wednesday Wanderings featuring: Bauneg Beg Mountain, Douglas Memorial Woods. On Saturday, Oct. 6 from 8-10 a.m., join Mary Mazur at Savage Wildlife Preserve for a family friendly walk around this lovely riverfront preserve. The outing will take you on a search for animal signs: identifying clues, tracks, sounds of animals and birds that have been on the

trails ahead of us. On Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. - noon, there will be the fall outing with the Old Berwick Historical Society at Negutaquet Conservation Area, North Berwick. Historian Steven Eames will discuss the militia of northern New England, its origins with the provincial government as military administration to provide active military, and the turn of tide 1774 when the militia found itself turning against the provincial government. On Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. - noon, Michael Wright of Berwick will lead a walk around Keay Brook Preserve in Berwick, part of the 229-acre Salmon Falls River Conservation Area. Education Foundation Hosts Golf Tournament KENNEBUNK The Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel (EFKA) hosted 20 teams and enlisted the support of more than 20 sponsors at its 9th annual golf tournament at Webhannet Golf Club on September 10. Funds raised by the EFKA support creative educational opportunities and academic excellence for public school students in RSU 21. The tournament’s winning team included Jeremy Thombs, Barry Braddick, Jeff Binnette, and Nick Bridges, all of Kennebunk. Binnette, owner of Smart Home Solutions in Kennebunk, has a direct connection with the organization through his children. “The annual EFKA golf tournament is always a great way to join up with local community members and businesses to support this very important organization,” he said. “My children have seen the results of this organization first-hand with the week-long trip to Camp Kieve’s Leadership School, the Arts festival at Sea Road School, and for several years now they have pledged funds to assist our Lego Robotics team to compete

at the World Championship. These are just a few of the many worthwhile opportunities that RSU21 students and teachers have benefited from. Thanks to all the volunteers that organize these events so that we can raise money to help support this organization’s mission.” The local community stepped up generously to sponsor the tournament, earning the praise of EFKA Events Chairperson Rhonda Hebert. “Special thanks goes to Kirk Kimball of Webhannet Golf Club, as well as Ned’s Bakes and BBQ for the wonderful food,” she said. “I would also like to thank all golfers, sponsors, and volunteers who participated in this fantastic and fun event. It draws friends

and community together to support our schools and teachers, and to ignite the spark of creativity and innovation in our students.” EFKA President James Read commented on the strong community involvement evident at the golf tournament. “For me, the support that the EFKA receives from our community is humbling. Thank you to everyone involved.” EFKA is an independent, charitable 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing academic excellence in grades K-12 in the public schools of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel. Marshwood Semifinalists in National Merit Scholarship Program

SOUTH BERWICK Marshwood High School Principal, Paul Mehlhorn, announced that students Liam Coomey, Nathan Kiesman and Noble Mushtak have been named Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. About 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by

taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT) which serves as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of 16,000 Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $31 million that will be offered next spring.

Safety First for When Operating Utility Vehicles STATEWIDE Utility vehicles, or UTVs, are modern day workhorses that haul heavy loads, transport materials and make jobs easier. As they grow in popularity in rural, suburban and urban areas, it’s important for operators and passengers to keep safety in mind. “While UTVs are a lot of fun to drive, they should be treated like work vehicles, not toys, reminds Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing more than 100 power equipment, engine, and utility vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. OPEI offers the following safety tips: Read your owner’s manual. Follow all guidelines and familiarize yourself with the controls. Misplaced manuals can be found online and saved on your computer for future reference.

The Cucurbitaceae family may be best known for pumpkins, squash and gourds, but there actually are 800 species that belong to this family. While they share many of the same properties, these fruits each have their own unique attributes. Inspect your UTV before operation. Pay attention to tires, lights, and other systems. Check for missing or damaged parts. Replace any parts needed or take equipment to a qualified service representative. Only responsible, adult drivers should operate UTVs. Take a safety course for UTV operators. Do not allow a child to operate a UTV. Always wear your seat belt and utilize handholds. UTVs are equipped with a seat belt for the operator and with seat belts for any passengers. Passengers should be tall enough to reach handholds in the UTV while their backs are against the seat and feet are flat on the floorboards. Remember “all in. Keep hands, arms, legs and feet inside the UTV at all times. Exercise caution, especially on slopes. Drive completely up or down a slope or hill before making a turn. Do not turn the is tender, while butternut, acorn, spaghetti, and hubbard squashes are winter squashes because they feature a tough skin. Even though it takes some effort to crack that shell, the dense, nutrient-rich flesh inside is well worth the workout. Gourds Gourds are essentially ornamental squashes; they aren’t cultivated for eating. Instead they are bred to look beautiful and unique in autumn centerpieces. Types of gourds include autumn wing gourd, warted gourds, turban gourds, and bottle gourds. Each gourd is unique in its shape and color. Pumpkins Pumpkins come in ornamental and edible varieties. Even though all pumpkins can be consumed, some taste better than others. Small pumpkins tend to be decorative because, according to Nutritious Life, they do not have enough meat inside to make them worthy of cooking. However, sugar pumpkins are best for baking and cooking favorite reci-

vehicle in mid-slope, and stay clear of ditches and embankments. Regardless of inclines, drive slowly and turn smoothly. Pay attention when backing up. Pay attention when hauling a load. When hauling cargo the vehicle’s center of gravity is raised, so you may need to slow down and adjust your driving. Materials you are hauling should be in the cargo box and secured. Use care when towing a load. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for weight limits, and make sure the cargo box is loaded to assume good traction for driving and stopping. Tow a load at a speed slow enough to maintain control. Remember, the stopping distance increases with the speed and weight of a towed load. Only operate your UTV in clear conditions. Do not operate your UTV in poor weather, when tired, or when intoxicated. Maintain your UTV and fuel it properly. Follow manufacturer recommendations for maintenance, and only use E10 or less fuel. Some gas stations may offer 15 percent ethanol (E15) gas or higher ethanol fuel blends, but any fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol can damage — and is illegal to use in — small engine equipment (like a UTV) not designed for it. Also, never put “old gas in your UTV. If you don’t know the date of purchase, dispose safely of the fuel in the can and buy fresh fuel. For more safety tips, go to www.opei.org. And for further information on proper fueling, go to www.lookbeforeyoupump. com. The festive hues and flavors of squashes, gourds and pumpkins are one more thing that makes Halloween and autumn special.
