15th Punkinfiddle Family Festival this Saturday WELLS – Celebrate Punkinfiddle Family Festival and National Estuaries Day at Laudholm Farm on Saturday, September 30, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Enjoy traditional crafts, hands-on learning, lively music, old-fashioned games, fun food, farm animals and lots of happy faces in a historic seaside setting. It’s a day reminiscent of going back in time. More than a dozen artisans will demonstrate traditional

skills. Some of the activities that will take place throughout the day, include instrument-making, spinning/weaving and pumpkin

carving. At 10:30 a.m., storyteller extraordinaire Jackson Gillman will perform on the Laudholm Live Stage. Punkinfiddle wel-

comes many talented musicians and storytellers to the event. Volunteers from the Museums of Old York will keep the action happening with lots of games including Tug-o-War, Wheelbarrow Race, Sack Race, 3-legged Race, Pumpkin Bocce, Stilt Walking and Hoop Racing. More to see and do include building fairy houses, making corn husk dolls, visiting live animals, and special art projects with the Audubon Society.

Bring a picnic if you like, but if you don't have time to prepare a basket there will be plenty of food to purchase from Duffy's Tavern & Grill, Arundel Ice Cream and The cider Donut Company. But these days DioGuardi, 46, savors her simpler life in York. It is here that she and her husband Mike McCuddy are raising their young son and where she finds contentment giving back to her community, helping young people and mentoring talented youth. “I’m grateful for Maine and my life here,� DioGuardi said by phone Monday. “I love everything about living here and it’s an incredible area to raise a child.� One way DioGuardi gives back is by organizing and judging “New England Sings.� She’s in the midst of planning the second edition of the familyfriendly, American Idol-like

contest for young New England singers, ages 12-21. The competition takes place on Tuesday, Octtober 10 at 7 p.m. at the Ogunquit Playhouse. She is a judge, along with Playhouse artistic director Brad Kenney and Bonnie Hayes, chairwoman of the songwriting department at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where DioGuardi is a visiting scholar and teaches songwriting each fall. “New England Sings� got its start when the pastor of First Parish Church in York asked DioGuardi to stage an American Idol contest at the church. “I didn’t want to judge people at the church, so I reached out to Brad Kenney at the Ogunquit Playhouse and we had it there,� said DioGuardi. The first New England Sings attracted 100 entrants, raised $40,000 for five local

charities and awarded Berklee summer scholarships to the finalists, said DioGuardi. “It was so successful and from that we created Inspired Nation, a national organization committed to fostering talent and confidence in young people,� she said. The organization, says its

website, believes “that when you give young people a platform to tell their stories, you are giving them an opportunity to find their voice, gain confidence and empower themselves as well as others. We believe it is this process of storytelling and having their voices heard that will foster the next generation of leaders.� “It’s all about using music as advocacy and sharing the talents of these young, gifted kids,� said DioGuardi. “I’m committed to this generation of kids.
